• Simplified registration process, with the ability to quickly search and filter activities by age range, activity type, or day of week.

ORINDA TEEN ADVISORY COUNCIL (OTAC) OTAC is a fun, welcoming, teen driven community service organization. Each year OTAC members host special events for teens, work closely with the City of Orinda and City Council on teen issues, and provides community service throughout the Lamorinda area. If you’re looking to make new friends, impact your community, and have fun the Orinda Teen Advisory Council is the club for you. Meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 4:00 pm, at the Orinda Community Center. Teens are welcome to join anytime. Lamorinda Trails Challenge COMING MAY 2019

Join your neighbors and friends for the Lamorinda Trails Challenge coming later this Spring. The Trails Challenge is a collaborative effort between the Lafayette, Moraga and Orinda parks and recreation agencies highlighting the magnificent trail systems connecting us. Walkers, runners, bikers, families, dogs, and outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to hit the trails and record how far they walk, hike, run, or bike Lamorinda area trails. Fun objective based challenges will encourage you to explore, appreciate, and connect with your local trail system.

Dance Orinda Ballet Academy & Company Ballet Intensive & Ballet Camp Cinderella “Excerpts”: July 8–August 9 Ages 3–18Y

Patricia Tomlinson, Artistic Director

The Orinda Ballet Academy and Youth Company was founded in 2009, by Artistic Director, PatriciaTomlinson. Orinda Ballet is a year round Ballet Academy and youth performing company based in the Orinda Community Center. Offering classes for students aged 3 years to 18 years, starting with the Pre-Ballet through advanced pre-professional divisions. In addition to ballet classes, Pilates reformer and contemporary jazz classes are offered. All students have the opportunity to participate in the bi-annual performances of “The Sweet Dream Nutcracker” (Fall term) and Spring term story ballet (past productions include, “Cinderella,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Swan Lake,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Firebird,” “Copella,” and “Peter Pan”).

Summer terms hold a demonstration performance.

Ms. Tomlinson has over 30 years of professional dancing, and instructing experience. Her background includes training in NYC under George Balanchine’s world-renown “School of American Ballet.” Ms. Tomlinson’s performing career began early as a student in NYC, performing with NYC Ballet and Natalia Markova’s company. Her extensive professional dancing career includes working as a soloist and principal dancer with Houston Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, Diablo Ballet, as well as guesting in various companies. She has taught and set Ballets throughout the United States. She is also a certified Pilates trainer in all equipment. Ms. Tomlinson takes great pleasure in working with her students and sharing her passion of ballet and dance.

Ballet 4A pre-pointe class and Ballet 4B beginning pointe classes (must be approved by director to take pointe or enrolled in class in prior term) plus one contemporary/jazz class. Learn ballet dances from the classical ballet “Cinderella” to perform in end of term demonstration. Create costume for the end of term demonstration.

Ballet Attire: Black leotard, pink tights, pink leather ballet slippers. Hair neatly pulled into a bun. No tutus.

Welcome to the world of Orinda youth sports. For many players this is their first time playing any team sport, so we like to keep things fast, fun, and beginner friendly.

Weekday practices not only develop basic skills, such as passing and shooting, but help develop life skills such as team-work, respect, and fair play. Games, played Saturdays, are played 4v4 so players get more opportunities and space to play.

In our 1st and 2nd grade leagues players continue to develop their skills, while learning more about the basic strategies and tactics of soccer. At practice, coaches focus on skill development through mini-games and team drills, while games on Saturdays are played 6v6 with a goalie.

In our 3rd and 4th grade leagues teams expand and so does the fun! Games are played 8v8 with a goalie as older players continue to learn the strategies and tactics of soccer. At practices coaches emphasize teamwork while expanding on the basic skills to include offensive and defensive strategies.

At this age, we partner with Lamorinda Soccer Club to put on a great league for our oldest players. This league is perfect for players who want to continue playing soccer, but aren’t as interested in more competitive club programs. Coaches focus on offensive and defensive strategies while refining fundamental skills. Games are regulation 11v11 in these age groups.

Orinda Youth Sports: Teams & Coaches Would you like to play with friends this season in OYS sports?

There are a few ways to make that happen when you register.

1. CREATE YOUR TEAM If you have a group of friends you’d like to play with, register with that team!

2. PLAY FOR YOUR SCHOOL If you don’t have a specific coach you would like to play with, you can still play with friends from your school!

a. Find your coach

During registration list your school and you will be placed with as many players as possible from the same school.

b. Have your coach complete the OYS Roster Form available online at orindaparksandrec.org or at the Orinda Community Center

Please note—in some situations a school may have more players registered than spaces available. In these situations excess players will be placed together and then combined with another group to create a full team.

c. Have your coach submit the completed form to the Orinda Community Center or dsanchez@cityoforinda.org d. Register for the league using the appropriate barcode e. Once these steps have been completed OYS staff will place all registered players with their corresponding team.

Please note—your coach must list you on their roster form in order to be included on their team. If a player is not listed on the form they may be assigned to another team at the discretion of OYS staff.

BEGINNING OBEDIENCE

Beginning Obedience is the foundation for all training goals. We teach you how to motivate your dog to want to learn the basics of heel, sit, and down. We teach how to shape the “leave it” and “come” commands, and the command “wait” to prevent your dog from bolting through doors. This is a critical step in developing a healthy bond, and puts your dog on the road to a more meaningful life. The first class of the session is mandatory, and you come without your dog. Come and learn to play traditional ukulele music of the 20s and 30s, including Hawaiian, Tin Pan Alley, blues, and period novelty songs. Learn chords and strumming by playing and singing along with other ukulele players in a supportive environment. The class offers something for students at all skill levels, beginning with two and three chord songs in the basic keys, advancing to more complex songs, picking and chord melodies. Smart Driver Program is a recognized course designed specifically for the older driver and takes into consideration the physical changes of the maturing driver and identifies ways to compensate for those changes. You may be eligible for a discount on your automobile insurance rate after completion of the 8-hour course. Please check with your insurance agent for specific details regarding your particular situation If you have completed the basic AARP Driver Safety Program within the last four years, you may be eligible to take the shorter AARP DSP refresher class to maintain your insurance discount. AARP requires a minimum of eight participants to run the class. Orinda will notify participants two weeks prior to the first class if we need to cancel the program due to low enrollment.

BEGINNER/ADVANCED BEGINNER

Join one of the tennis classes at the scenic Orinda Community Center tennis courts. Small classes. Class times may change due to player levels. Tennis Levels: Beginner: Designed for those with little or no background playing tennis. Course introduces fundamental strokes (forehand, backhand, serve, and net play); rules, scoring, and court play etiquette. Advanced Beginner: understands grips, ground strokes and can begin to control the serve. Emphasis on technique, doubles strategy, and movement on the court. Intermediate: Players have a basic understanding of the game, can sustain a rally, and has a serve that exhibits some control, but is in need of a second serve. The USTA will rate you under 4.0 but above 3.0 Advanced: Good consistency, hits with depth and control, serve well (including a good spin second serve), good overhead shots and feels comfortable at the net. The USTA will rate the advanced player a 4.0 and over. No class 7/1. $10 Material (ball) fee payable to instructor at first class.

Il Fiorello, a family-owned company dedicated to growing and milling the finest quality artisan olive oil, is located in Green Valley and Suisun Valley between Fairfield and Napa Valley. Il Fiorello is proud to present their international award-winning olive oils. Your tour will begin around 11:15 am. During the tour of the organic property, you will hear the history of olive oil, the significance of the term extra virgin, and the production of their international award-winning olive oils. We visit the olive grove to look at the different olive varieties and how we care for our trees. We’ll visit our state-of-the-art Pieralisi Gold olive mill, capable of milling three tons of olives an hour. We conclude with a guided tasting of our olive oils and balsamic vinegars. Following the tastings, enjoy a lunch served on the back patio overlooking the Suisun Valley. Most lunch items are from the organic gardens on the property. REGISTRATION | SPRING/SUMMER 2019

General Registration Information Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and is required for all classes and camps prior to participation. Register early as some classes fill quickly or may be cancelled due to low enrollment. You will be notified if a class is cancelled, or if there is a change.

CANCELLED CLASSES

Classes and activities not meeting the minimum enrollment 2–4 days prior to the start of class will be cancelled and a full refund will be issued.

REFUND AND TRANSFER REQUESTS

A 3% facility preservation fee applies to all classes.

SINCE SEPTEMBER 2018

Facility Preservation Fee On May 2, 2017, the Orinda City Council approved the Facility Preservation Fee for the Parks and Recreation Department. The fee is similar to the existing Per Player Fee applied to Sports Facility rentals for sports facility maintenance.

The Parks and Recreation Department implemented the fee with the Fall/Winter class registration beginning August 1.

This fee is currently applied as a tax to each department transaction (excluding sports facility rentals) in order to provide transparency in how the fee is collected.

The funds generated will be used for the preservation of non-sports specific recreation facilities, particularly the Orinda Community Center, and help supplement the limited resources available in the General Fund.

Registration may be cancelled up to 5 days prior to the scheduled class for a refund minus a processing fee of $5 for credit cards or $20 for checks. Requests less than 5 days prior to the start of the class are subject to approval by Recreation Staff. No refunds after the program has begun.

MEDICATION

If medication is needed (prescription or over the counter) for underage participants, a supplemental Parental Consent & Directions to Staff for the Self-Administration of Medications Form is recommended. Form available on our website (orindaparksandrec.org) or at the office.

VISIONS IN EDUCATION CLIENTS

Voucher required at time of registration. If applicable, client is responsible for materials fee.

The long awaited, highly anticipated, new Art and Garden Center is now open. Escape into the Wilder hills surrounded by open space. This new facility, with its picturesque setting, is the perfect venue for any gathering.

The approximate 6,500 square foot “L-shaped” building consists of a single room and three adjacent rooms separated by two partition walls and a small lobby area separating the spaces. The three adjacent rooms can also be used as a grand room impeccably suited for a spirtual retreat. With an open and exposed industrial style ceiling, natural light glistens through the windows and radiates through the room, with the honey-chestnut luxury vinyl tile planks flowing from one end of the room to the other. As you walk throughout the rest of the building, the polished concrete flooring offers high light reflectivity and maintains the bright, clean, and industrial space.
