Two Years In Perspective In a time when cultures across the globe are intertwined and widely accessible through smart devices and social media, art no longer derives from any single source. Instead, art reflects the world that we live in today, stemming from a series of diverse sources, each equally compelling and bearing its own distinct history and DNA. RUSSO YUBERO aims to be at the center of this whirlwind, introducing collectors to a selection of international artists, including established players and exciting newcomers.

We wish to create bridges between cultures and open up precious opportunities for upcoming artists from far-reaching horizons.

In our opinion, this is the only way for art to achieve its prophetic mission.

We believe the next great collections will be borne from this unique mix. In this little book, we invite you to discover a selection of works from artists who will be exhibited in one of our three galleries. These galleries are located in the Freeport Building in Geneva, walking distance from the Rolex and UBS headquarters; beside the renowned contemporary art MAIIAM Museum in Chiang Mai, the new capital of upcoming Asian art, and in Bangkok.

We hope these works will inspire you and offer a glimpse into the future destiny of our endangered planet, with all its multiplicity and the richness of its cultures and heritages.

Lee Ahnnlee

Korean artist Lee Ahnnlee (b. 1985) exposes the profound meanings underlying oft-overlooked moments in life. His works are inspired by the smallest events and sights we encounter every day, be it the lost wing of a butterfly on the edge of a window, a bird with a missing beak springing up as it awakens from a dream, or the blossoming of a flower. Lee believes that each of these minute occurrences embodies the entire universe. This philosophy brings a feeling of universality to each of his creations.

Lee’s series reads like a diary-like narrative, where small and big works sit side by side, each presenting a unique view of our shared destiny. In each work, the memory of what was offers us a glimpse into what will be. Collectively, these little insights present an overarching vision of the world and of our human condition, whether we are confined to a room, a neighborhood or a planet.

A graduate of the esteemed École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris, Lee’s visual interpretation of the human condition has attracted the attention of collectors and museums worldwide. In addition to annual solo exhibitions in leading galleries in Seoul, his work has been displayed in the Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art and Seogbuk Creation Center. Most recently, Lee was named one of the 111 power artists of the 2020 decade by Korean magazine ART IN CULTURE.

Wongsatorn Tanapathomsinchai

Wongsatorn Tanapathomsinchai’s (b. 1996) innovative approach to etching integrates this classical technique with a powerful prophetic message. His meticulous renderings present a dark commentary on the drama of deforestation and environmental disaster, evoking a sense of foreboding.

Wongsatorn’s interest in this theme is deeply influenced by Professor Yanawit Kunchaethong, Dean of the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts at Silpakorn University in Bangkok where he studied. Since the artist’s debut in 2018, his work has been widely sought after and exhibited at leading galleries and shows including the Indonesia International Print Triennial Competition, the Bangkok Triennale International Print and Drawing Exhibition, the Guanlan International Print Bienniale in China and the International Print Bienniale in Varna, Bulgaria.

Chaichana Luetrakun

Chaichana Luetrakun’s evocative works explore the universe of wreckage and trash, drawing urgent attention to what these abandoned items tell us about our world today. Through Chaichana’s vivid depictions of piles of debris, used cars and demolished buildings, we start to comprehend the bleak future that lies ahead if we continue to mindlessly build and destroy, feeding our insatiable appetite for renewal. These works offer a bird’s-eye view of the rapid multiplication of these abandoned items, warning us of the looming threat we face if our current practices persist.

Through these works, the painter predicts that a thicker and thicker cloud of such ingenious inventions and innovations could finally overwhelm and detach Earth from space, leading to its destruction.

Chaichana is among Thailand’s most notable young artists. In the prestigious UOB Painting of the Year Competition, he was the first to win in two consecutive years: he was awarded “Most Promising Artist of the Year” in 2018 and the Grand Prize in 2019.

Bernard Garo

Bernard Garo’s (b. 1964) practice spans painting and photography, creating connections between these two distinct mediums. A paean to painting as much as the land, Garo incorporates organic materials that he gathers from cliffs and volcanic craters into his large-scale canvases. The physical and mineral impact of these works brings us face to face with the materiality of our origins and the fragility of our civilisation against the forces of nature. These multi-faceted pieces can be seen as a celebration of nature, life, and mankind and his vulnerability, as well as technology and science.

Dedicated to the future of our society, Garo aims to preserve our natural environment and stimulate change by using any media at his disposal. These materials have ranged from sand, earth, wood ash and crushed brick, to lacquer, latex and bitumen. His works express Garo’s fundamental ideas and values, reflecting his humanist and contemporary thinking, and strong sense of both the material and visual.

Garo graduated with distinction from the Lausanne Art School (ECAL) in 1989. He has had over 100 solo exhibitions in galleries and museums in Switzerland, Europe, the United States and China, and represented Switzerland at the Summer Photographic Festival 2008 in Brussels with his print series Topography of Passage and Oblivion. His pictorial and photographic work has also been featured in several publications including a monograph, and can be found in numerous private and public collections across the globe. Garo currently lives and works in his studio in Nyon, Switzerland, and travels extensively to Paris, Barcelona and Berlin for projects.

Pannaphan Yodmanee

Pannaphan Yodmanee (b. 1988) is among the most notable young artists in Thailand today, achieving international recognition shortly after her debut in 2014. Pannaphan’s mesmerising works bridge cultures across time and space, combining found objects with natural matter such as rocks and minerals, and painted elements that recall both traditional Thai art and architecture and Western cultural sediments.

Her abstract works explore diverse cosmologies and universal themes of the human condition from the natural phenomena of time to loss, devastation, death and the Karmic cycles of birth and rebirth. Whether realised on canvas or in cement, Pannaphan’s pieces embody her painterly, sculptural and architectural sensibility, demonstrating her mastery of all kinds of media.

Pannaphan was awarded the prestigious Benesse Prize at the Singapore Biennale in 2016. Her works have been exhibited at the Singapore Art Museum, Lyon Biennale and Bangkok Art and Culture Center, among others.

Pichet Klunchun

Thai National Artist Pichet Klunchun (b. 1971) is widely known as a dancer and choreographer. Originally trained in classical Thai mask dance, khon, he studied with Chaiyot Khummanee, one of the most recognised Khon masters in Thailand from the age of 16.

After receiving his degree in Thai Classical Dance at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Pichet performed at high-profile venues and events including the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok. Subsequently, he furthered his dance training in the United States where he was exposed to modern dance and became inspired to expand the traditional understanding of khon and revitalise this classical dance form.

Pichet has since earned domestic and international accolades for his efforts in contemporising Khon. However, his main achievement is embodied in his paintings which are created through a combination of action painting, performance art, and traditional Thai Khon. This unique mix results in exceptional pictorial work, which has been capturing the attention of international museums and collectors. Lately, Pichet has represented Thailand in several intercultural performing arts programmes in Asia and Europe, and won several awards locally and internationally.

Teerapon Hosanga

Teerapon Hosanga’s (b. 1980) works cast light on the paradoxes inherent in the events and objects of everyday life—the ultimate being that man creates and destroys simultaneously. The artist reveals these contradictions by ascribing new aesthetic values to familiar objects we encounter daily. In doing so, the original purposes and values of these objects are rendered void and replaced by the paradox.

In his White and Blue Helmets series, Teerapon incorporates the fragility and preciousness of white and blue ceramic porcelain into motorcycle helmets, thereby conferring this protective gear with new meanings and values. The series opens a debate about our fragility and the extent to which we are supposed to be protected in the world in which we live today. The jarring contrast between the helmets that are intended to be strong, protective, and flexible and the reality of the limited shield and security they provide is a metaphor of the world we are building for our children to live in.

Aurèle

Aurèle (b. 1963) has achieved international acclaim over the past three decades for his LostDog series. These spectacular installations of giant sculpted bull terriers can be found in the heart of metropolises around the globe from Paris to New York, London and Shanghai. Earning the artist the nickname “Andy Warhol’s nephew,” this series of works marries the mass culture and appeal of pop art, with the incisive political commentary of conceptual artists like Marcel Duchamp.

Inspired by a missing dog poster that Aurèle stumbled across one day in New York, these sculptures represent displaced mankind.

According to the artist, “there was everything from our lives in this poster: money, material or spiritual quest, emotion, willpower, choice, desire and above all loss. This lost dog was like mankind, lost in the confusion of the modern world.” The diverse iterations of Aurèle’s “lost dogs” across the world each offer an omen of human destiny through the artist’s eyes. Commenting on global issues affecting mankind from wars to deforestation, pollution, and social and political extremism, each presents a different kind of threat yet emphasises our common destiny. Through this series, Aurèle leads us to the realisation that we all are “lost dogs” and need to find our own individual paths back to sanity, thereby collectively avoiding a fatal outcome.

Ban-Yuan Chang

Taiwanese artist Ban-Yuan Chang’s (b. 1991) multidisciplinary practice spans diverse art forms from participatory installations, to artefact-like sculptures and new media. The connection unifying these varied works is Chang’s enduring interest in the co-existence of man and machine, and how the body will interact with machines in a posthuman era.

The body in Chang’s works is not only based on the physical or anatomical dimension. It is an embodiment of humans, machines and society, incorporating the cultural, technological, and cybernetic aspects of modern life. Informed by Chang’s Taiwanese background and paramedic experience during his military service, his art employs the motif of the body to tackle recurring themes including the accessibility of cultural knowledge; formation of identity; man’s interdependence and symbiosis with technology; and subjectivity in the age of information. The resulting works are neither a historical prediction nor a simulation of a physician’s view on the evolution of the human body. They are explorations of the power of the body in different cultural and governmental contexts, as well as its fragility in terms of accessibility to liberty, personal choice and sharing of knowledge. Chang’s practice provides a critical view on the individual’s right over his own destiny in today’s nomadic global society.

Chang graduated from The Royal College of Art in London. His work has been presented in galleries and museums including the Future Island project at Saatchi Gallery in 2016 and Taipei Fine Art Museum in 2019, where he held his first solo museum solo show, The Self, Humans and Machines with their Residues in 2019.

Chang was awarded the Young Taiwanese Artist Award by the Ministry of Culture in Taiwan in 2017.

Aphisit Sidsunthia

Thai artist Aphisit Sidsunthia’s (b. 1994) surreal works explore the effects of the historical and personal events of our daily lives on our imagination and dreams. The artist combines unexpected and improbable circumstances in his paintings, where different levels of reality interact as they would in our dreams. The result is creations that challenge by asking more questions than they provide answers to, and summon our imaginations to reconcile the seeming disjunctions of situations depicted in each work.

These assemblages of arbitrary images and contradictions create layers of consciousness in our minds and invites us to reconsider the true relationship between the multitude of events occurring in our lives every day.

Aphisit graduated from Silpakorn University in Bangkok, and has since showcased his work in solo shows in Spain, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia.

Nuttida Inmorn

Nuttida Inmorn’s (b. 1994) practice is deeply influenced by her relationship to the past, and her works focus on the theme of the deceased, whether in relation to people or events. Rooted in Thai culture, she translates her mystical universe to the viewer through hypnotic works which are literally about waking up the ghosts of those who have left us, or relationships that have disappeared.

Often unsettling and deeply affecting, Nuttida’s works trigger memories and encapsulate the mystery of time, leading viewers to a new form of nostalgia with universal resonance.

Nuttida graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Chiang Mai University, and has since exhibited in several group exhibitions in Thailand.

Ubatsat Sutta

Thai artist Ubatsat Sutta’s (b. 1980) bold expressionist paintings reflect the combination of his art training at Chiang Mai University and Doctorate in Buddhism from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. A meditation on both the art of colour and Buddhist philosophy, each work is an explosion of colours contained within a circular canvas. This circle is inspired by the Buddhist view of the universe—that existence is a continuous cycle of life, death, rebirth and suffering, feeding into a singular interpretation of the diversity of the world around us.

Ubatsat works are featured in the renowned MAIIAM Museum Collection in Chiang Mai as well as important private collections.

Chong Ai Lei

Chong Ai Lei’s (b. 1984) contemplative paintings steal glimpses into the private moments of her subjects. Depicted in intimate settings, Chong delicately captures the inner thoughts, underlying emotions and psyche of these often lone female figures as they relax, unaware of the viewer’s gaze. In one work, Chong visualises the internal struggle with conflicting feelings through a portrayal of two female figures intertwined in a variety of poses that hint at the state of their relationship. In another, a young girl languishes on the grass in the sun, conveying a sense of playful dynamism and freedom, confidence and self-indulgence. The different compositions express our universal search for a state of balance when confronted with dilemmas and challenges, whether these are caused by fear, loss or desire.

Chong studied Fine Arts at Dasein Academy of Art in Kuala Lumpur. A winner of the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award in 2011, she has shown her works in numerous group and solo exhibitions internationally and attracted a steady following of art collectors.

Lampu Kansanoh

Thai artist Lampu Kansanoh (b. 1983) is internationally acclaimed for her bright and bold caricatures of everyday life. These vignettes make astute observations on the human condition through parody, offering incisive commentary on politics and society in her homeland.

When Lampu compares a housewife concentrating on doing her laundry with esteemed parliamentary representatives sleeping on duty, she obliquely raises questions at the centre of debate in Thailand today. Her humour not only helps to get such taboo messages across easily, but is a definitive feature of her painting style, making her works instantly recognisable.

Lampu graduated with a Bachelors and Masters degree in Fine Art from Silpakorn University in Bangkok. In 2012, she was selected to be an artist-in-residence at Fukuoka Asian Art Museum which culminated in the Winds of Artist exhibition later that year.

Her works have been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions in Southeast Asia. They have also been auctioned internationally, and can be found in prestigious private collections.

Napanant Rangsrithummakhun

Napanant Rangsrithammakhun (b. 1994) is inspired by the complex interactions in human society and the discrepancies between the face we show the world, and the unmasked one that lies behind it. His paintings highlight the labyrinth of emotions, feelings, and untold thoughts which are hidden from view by our “visible” face. In this way, Napanant leads us to question the very meaning of truth in relation to human behaviour and interactions, and the Asian concept of “face”. He places the viewer in the position of the character in the work by simultaneously showing us the “visible” face being composed for others, and the real feelings boiling up in the inner self. The decomposition and contortion of these portraits emphasise this contradiction and the impossibility of ever expressing the complete truth in human society and relationships.

Napanant graduated from Rajamangala University and is currently pursuing a Masters in Fine Art at Silpakorn University in Bangkok.

Despite his young age, Napanant has achieved wide spread recognition with awards including the 3rd prize in the 19th Panasonic Contemporary Painting Contest, and the 1st prize in the 8th Asia Plus Painting Exhibition, “Universal Scenery”.

Pawarisorn Wasinbut

Pawarisorn Wasinbut (b. 1977) blends comic, pop and street art, creating dynamic paintings with the punk energy of his second passion—music. The flamboyant colours he uses are reminiscent of those in flashy advertising campaigns, ironically positioning these works as a product of the very consumerist contemporary culture that they critique.

Populated with his own crew of characters and heroes, Pawarisorn’s paintings can be seen as visual fables of the absurd times we live in. They draw on the imagery of our collective subconscious and of our failures, depicting stories of spaceships, AIDS, rock and roll, drugs, money, and repression.

While Pawarisorn approaches these dominant themes of 21st century life with humour and lightness, the works are in fact a scathing criticism of the extreme consumerism, waste, and devastation ravaging our world today.

Pawarisorn studied Fine Arts at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.

Thanawat Charoensiri

Thai artist Thanawat Charoensiri’s (b. 1994) art explores his obsession with the cycle of life and the rhythms of growth and reproduction in nature. His paintings mix beings of all kinds at different stages of their life cycles. By varying the size and scale of the subjects in his works, he opens our eyes to the invisible – the love stories, drama, illness and death that occur in the natural world, no different from what we experience during our human life cycle. Thanawat reveals the vanity of life, as well as all the natural beauty in it that we often fail to see. In a time when the rights of animals and non-human beings is generating heated discussions, the artist chooses not to assert the cruelty of humans but rather how much humans simply do not understand about the natural world.

Thanawat invites us to observe these other beings around us more carefully, and re-examine what we think doesn’t exist. The aura of mystery and charm in his works draws us into their world and humanises its stories. In the words of photographer Diane Arbus, we begin to realise that “nothing is ever the same as they said it was, it is what I’ve never seen before that I recognise.”

Charoensiri graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Chiang Mai University.

Wanda Chaima

Wanda Chaima’s (b. 1998) introspective paintings express the deep pain in the world today, questioning the isolation, mutilation, and moral and physical distress affecting so many. While discomforting for the viewer, these ominous visions lead us to look into our own solitude and confront the perilous path that humanity is following.

Rendered with rare sensitivity and meticulous attention to detail, Wanda’s works combine diverse art schools from Surrealism to German expressionism, creating a unique painting style that has marked her out as one of the most promising artists of her generation in Thailand.

Wanda studied painting and sculpture at Silpakorn University in Bangkok. Her work has been exhibited at The Residence Bangkok, a space curated by Francois Russo at the request of the Thai government to showcase the most promising Thai talents in art and design, and at the 9th UOB Painting Of The Year Exhibition.

She is currently preparing for a solo show at Russo Yubero Geneva in 2021.

Natara Rungwong

Natara Rungwong (b. 1991) can often be found at work at the top of a ladder, cocooned inside one of his large-scale sculptures. Using industrial materials, the artist weaves repetitive patterns to construct organic forms inspired by ephemeral natural phenomena such as clouds and cobwebs. His work is a meditation on both the impermanence and infiniteness of such forms that mysteriously disappear then regenerate without any intervention.

Through his sculptures, Natara freezes these natural forms to explore the secret behind their ability to reconstruct themselves perfectly. Whether vegetal, animal or mineral, they have attained an eternalness that eludes man-made creations, which are not protected by the same restorative ability. Natara invites us to reflect on the strength hidden within the apparent fragility of these natural elements, and man’s inability to produce any such materials that autonomously regenerate like DNA. As humans, we are forced to constantly reconstitute and rebuild what we have invented. This question lies at the centre of Natara’s work, and is the foundation of its philosophical and poetic dimension.

Natara studied painting and sculpture at Silpakorn University in Bangkok.

Ronarong Butthongkaew

Thai artist Ronarong Butthongkaew is inspired by the chaos of life and the urban environment.

To heal his mind and challenge himself to continuously face and survive daily challenges, he began to explore his subconscious and create new forms of life. Ronarong translates his inner experiences to drawings, 3D motion graphics and videos, drafting line by line, then piece by piece, finally extending his compositions to new and free forms of life that he calls “the nonexistent things�.

Ronarong graduated from Silpakorn University in Bangkok. His works were exhibited at the prestigious Bangkok Art and Culture Centre in 2020.

Padung Prachanan

Thai artist Padung Prachanan’s art examines the overlap between our inner world and what the artist calls the ”External Area”, often represented in his work as a suspended forest—mysterious, dark and opaque. A place of silence and shadows, this abstract forest emphasises the depth of our ignorance, which like nature’s vastness extends far beyond our imaginings.

Human suffering and abandon are recurring themes in Padung’s work, with the darkness of the forest reflecting the darkness and unknown of our minds. He questions the complicated relationship between the space we inhabit and our life and spirit, inviting us to journey from the physicality of our outer space to the terror of our inner instincts. An exploration of the very idea of the human condition and what is inflicted upon others, these paintings offer a powerful analysis of both the disordered instincts of mankind and the mystery of nature.

Wichak Yangnok

Thai artist Wichak Yangnok’s (b. 1998) paintings depict still and abandoned scenes of the world after a plague. Uncannily prophetic, they were made before the current global pandemic.

Today, when half of humanity is confined to their homes and entire cities are deserted, these works carry a particularly ominous significance.

Drawing on a mastery of light reminiscent of Matthias Stomer, Dirck van Baburen and the Flemish School, Wichak creates spots in these empty spaces that seem to be illuminated by the spirits of the deceased. These highly varnished images seem to invite us to observe life, or what remains of it in an afterlife of sorts, behind a laboratory glass—it appears preserved, untouched and out of reach. There is despair and stupefaction trapped in these scenes, as if frozen by an invisible enemy. Observing from a detached distance, Wichak positions the viewer beyond time and space so we can start to question the very idea of life.

Supicha Sutanthavibul

Supicha Sutanthavibul’s paintings of stuffed toy animals hung on butcher hooks present powerful visual metaphors. Mixing adulthood and childhood, human and animal, and toy and flesh, these evocative images are reflections on power and abuse, greed, lust and wealth. They trigger our consciousness of a long forgotten innocence and the times when as children we were able to experience real empathy towards all forms of beings.

These haunting works force us towards instant introspection and psychoanalysis. Which are the sophisticated creatures, humans or beasts? What is innocence, why is childhood ending, where have our toys gone, and are we still entitled to hold on to these toys as we grow up? All these questions are woven into Supicha’s pictures in a whirlwind of black and white, colour, and varnish that draws us back towards our own paradise lost. One wonders whether it is in fact the viewer who is hung on these hooks, helpless to counter his own karma.

Supicha studied at Silapakorn university in Bangkok. Her works have been exhibited at the China Academy of Arts in Hangzhou, and can be found in Krung Thai Bank Collection and other notable private collections.
