From the Association President I would like to start my comments by congratulating our newest addition to the Distinguished Citadel Alumni List, Morris Robinson, ’91. While at The Citadel, Morris was known as the “singing knob.” After he graduated, he went on to become the first African American artist to sign with a major classical record label. Over the years, his performances have become legendary, and he is currently resident artist at Harvard University. More information about Morris can be found on page 23. The Citadel Alumni Association is proud of Morris, and along with celebrating his accomplishments, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Citadel’s first African American graduate, Charles Foster, ’70. A parade held in his honor in February is one of several events celebrating Charles Foster’s contributions this year. You can read more about Charles at citadel.edu/charlesfoster.

As we reflect on the past 50 years, many things have changed at Our Mighty Citadel. Major upgrades are on the horizon to ensure that our alma mater stays in step with changing times, while maintaining our most sacred customs. The Citadel master plan, which represents our vision for campus facilities over the next 15 years, is an important part of planning for the future of the college. The plan is being developed with the help of a team of consultants led by Ayers Saint Gross, a nationally recognized design firm. It is scheduled to be rolled out with a number of options in the fall of this year. During the development process, the firm reached out to the local community and alumni for input that will be incorporated into the final product.

While the master plan centers around how facilities can be best improved and used in the future, the ongoing development of the college’s strategic plan is focused on the mission of the college and the goals of The Citadel as it moves forward over the next five to seven years. You can be assured that leadership from your association is actively involved in this planning process. If you are interested in keeping up with this planning process, you can refer to news stories posted on today.citadel.edu.

Campus News BOV changes residency requirement The Citadel Board of Visitors (BOV) voted to raise the minimum number of semesters students pursuing a cadet degree must complete on campus in the South Carolina Corps of Cadets. Beginning with the Class of 2024, cadets are required to live on campus for six semesters (or five with one approved study abroad semester) rather than four.

The BOV voted unanimously to raise the minimum cadet residency requirement during a December 2 meeting on campus.

A first of its kind report by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce (CEW) attempts to answer the question about whether a college degree is worth the investment. In the report, entitled A First Try at ROI: Ranking 4,500 Colleges, college and universities were ranked according to short and long-term return on investment (ROI) for students.

An online table allows users to sort data on tuition, median student debt and median earnings for each institution.

According to the table, The Citadel provides the best ROI in South Carolina when compared to the state’s other 11 public, four-year colleges and universities.

A First Try at ROI: Ranking 4,500 Colleges was created using data from the U.S. Department of Education’s expanded College Scorecard. The CEW’s report calculates the ROI in various stages of a graduate’s career.

The CEW lists each institution’s current ROI incrementally in the form of net present value (NPV), from 10 to 40 years after graduation. The NPV is how much a future sum of money is valued today.

Compounded over time, the return on investment for a Citadel education is as follows: 10-year: $133,000 15 year: $357,000 20 year: $560,00 30 year: $560,000 40-year: $1,197,000 Comparatively, Clemson’s ROI is second; Coastal Carolina, third; and College of Charleston, fourth, followed by Francis Marion.

He adored going to football games almost as much as cadets adored him.

General Robert P. Carson, also called “General” or “G2,” was known to stand in his backyard pointing his nose in the direction of the stadium early on Bulldogs’ home football game days. “He just couldn’t wait to get there to see everybody…he just knew it was a game day,” said John Bradford, D.V.M., General’s veterinarian and caretaker. “One of his other favorite things was sprawling out on ice when it was hot.”

General, one of The Citadel’s two mascots, passed away quietly in the evening hours of Sept. 13 in the campus home where the mascots lived with the Bradford family. General was 8 years old.

“General was playing not 20 minutes before he passed away with no suffering and with Boo curled up next to his side,” Bradford said.

Bradford, who had cared for G2 and Boo X since they were puppies, said the bulldog had not shown any signs of illness. He explained that G2 likely died from an embolism which he said is not uncommon for bulldogs, who often don’t live past the age of 10.

“General was a rock star. It would take us forever to get from our house on campus to the stadium or basketball games—there were so many cadets and visitors wanting to take pictures,” Bradford said. “He was a diva—he loved the attention. He knew exactly how to pose, too. General was a natural.”

General and Boo X, who became The Citadel mascots in 2013, had two litters of puppies together. It is not yet known if one of those bulldogs will eventually be asked to report for duty to replace G2.

The college held a memorial for General later in the semester, when he was interred in The Citadel Mascot Memorial Columbarium located at Johnson Hagood Stadium.

Cadet Paul Rhyne II is among the top 10 Army ROTC cadets in the nation, and “above the best” according to Maj. Gen. John Evans, commanding general at the U.S. Army Cadet Command.

As part of an annual video countdown of the top 10 cadets, Army ROTC command announced on November 16 that Rhyne is #7.

Rhyne will accept an Army commission to become an officer prior to graduating in May and is being assigned to the aviation branch. He is a pre-med biology major from Irmo, South Carolina, where he attended Dutch Fork High School.

Rhyne is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi academic honor society, the Pre-Med Society and The Citadel Flying Club. He

has earned Gold Stars for academic excellence while at The Citadel among other honors, and serves as a cadet officer.

Each fall, the U.S. Army Cadet Command selects 10 college seniors for its national order-of-merit list. Rhyne’s accomplishment marks the third consecutive year an Army ROTC cadet from the South Carolina Corps of Cadets has earned a slot in the top 10.

The order-of-merit list is based on several criteria including grade point average, performance on the Army Physical Fitness Test, college athletic participation and performance during college ROTC training and Advanced Camp at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

At 0400 on Saturday, Aug. 10, the 2019-2020 cadre were surprised when they discovered that their leadership training that day would be at Parris Island. The training, arranged by Commandant of Cadets Captain Geno Paluso, USN, Ret., ’89, consisted of five events and a shortened version of the 50-plus-hour Marine Crucible.

Marines and a contracted team of Special Forces leadership trainers led dozens of cadet teams throughout the day.

During the summer, Lesesne Gate was transported off-site to be refurbished. After several weeks, the freshly painted and restored gate returned to campus and was mounted back in place.

Eliot Rabin leans on a clothing rack, keeping a watchful eye on Peter Elliot Blue, his flagship menswear store located on Lexington Avenue in New York City. While the store has changed locations over the years, the quality of clothing and accessories remains.

I

n a small storeroom off Madison Avenue that serves as a makeshift office, Eliot Rabin, ’64, sits in a bistro chair at a table telling stories, many of which are not suitable for print and many, outlandish—one involving wine, an aging dictator and a toupee that he unceremoniously tossed into a bowl of bouillabaisse. Hanging behind him on a portable rack are a pair of slacks, a couple of blazers and an alligator jacket that retails for $275,000. The room is filled with bolts of fabric, pincushions, spools of thread, and, oddly, a leather hippopotamus. In an adjoining room a woman from Uzbekistan by the name of Stella is working at a sewing machine.

At 77, Rabin, who also answers to the name Catfish Eliot, is bald with a trim mustache and an impressive pair of white eyebrows that frame animated brown eyes. He is wearing a blue-andwhite-striped dress shirt and khaki slacks. A chunky silver Hermes bracelet adorns his left wrist, and a complicated looking watch that he bought in Paris, his right. Rabin is not tall, but his energy fills the room, and he has big ideas that get him noticed.

Rabin was born in Charleston in 1942 to Annie and Leon Rabin. His father owned Leon’s Men’s Wear on King Street, and later, in the 1970s, his mother opened a women’s clothing store in North Charleston called Dawn’s Village Shop. Rabin and his sister Eileen, who was three years younger, grew up in Charleston. First, they lived on Gordon Street and then they moved to Grove Street and 6th Avenue, the backyard of The Citadel. Rabin played marbles, hopscotch and Superman in a tree, an imaginary game that landed him a broken leg. He played Little League Baseball and attended Hebrew school, and in their English newsboy hats, he and his friends dangled from trees behind the shooting gallery by the Ashley River smoking rabbit tobacco, a medicinal herb that grew wildly.

The family had a beach house at Station 21 on Sullivan’s Island. Rabin and Eileen made bows and arrows out of the reeds that grew in the sand dunes. They rode horses on the beach and went fishing and water skiing.

Back in town at Hampton Park, Rabin played basketball with both black and white friends until local laws segregated their play. “We never thought about it,” says Rabin. “And then they passed these laws and everything began to polarize because they did a negative thing when everything was positive.”

As a Jewish boy growing up in Charleston, Rabin never encountered anti-Semitism. “Charleston had the largest Jewish population up until the Civil War and later supported an incredible number of synagogues for the size of the population at that time.”

The Rabin children learned the family business from Leon, who handed them a broom at a young age.

Remember one thing,” Rabin recalls his father saying, “If you can fold a cashmere sweater with your left hand and clean the toilet with your right hand, you can be in business.”

When Rabin was about 8 years old, he remembers a Saturday afternoon inside the store when he heard the screech of car tires. A 13-year-old black boy named Earl Huger had been hit by a car on King Street. “My father shut the doors of the shop, picked up the kid, put him in the car and drove to St. Francis Hospital.”

At St. Francis, the security guard told Leon that the Catholic hospital did not accept black patients. “And my father looked at him and pointed to the statues of Mary and Jesus and said, ‘Here’s Mary. Here’s Jesus. I’m leaving him right here. If he dies, it’s on you.’”

After Huger got out of the hospital, he worked at Leon’s until the age of 18, when he enlisted in the Air Force where he became the top sergeant major.

In the fall of 1960, Rabin was one of about 20 freshmen from Rivers High School to enroll at The Citadel. He had letters of acceptance from Tulane, Vanderbilt and the University of Tennessee, but it was the military college in his hometown that captured his attention. “It was the best thing that could have happened,” says Rabin. “I had put myself in a position, in a place where I had to sit at my

desk.”

Rabin’s sister Eileen Sorota remembers going to The Citadel to see her brother after he matriculated.

When her cousin, Susan, pointed to Rabin, Sorota did not recognize him.

“He had lost about 15 pounds. It was a tough year for him. A high school friend had quit, but my brother was determined. Now he wears that ring as proudly as any alumnus.”

Freshman year may have been challenging for Rabin, but the India Company upper-class cadets were not without their own challenges.

On a cold January morning, Rabin and some of his classmates snuck into the bathroom, where they lined the toilet bowls with Saran wrap and covered the black toilet seats with shoe polish.

That morning as the freshmen stood at attention in the quadrangle, they heard a loud ruckus coming from the bathroom. “They came down with fire in their eyes. We didn’t care. We were laughing so hard, and they tried to get us to stop—we were laughing and doing pushups. It was one of the funniest things that ever happened at the school.”

With that same air of reckless abandon, Rabin embarked on life after The Citadel. In London he

pursued a degree in the newly emerging field of space law. In a small class with students who were mostly the sons of tribal chiefs from Africa, Rabin remembers a Professor Burton, who called him “wet behind the ears” and who planned an unusual course of study: “I want you to hitchhike through Europe. I’m going to send you to English-speaking libraries, and you can send in your assignments.”

Rabin needed no further encouragement. With his guitar on his back, he was off—Dover, Ostend, Belgium, Frankfurt, Munich, Innsbruck, Trieste. And in May, instead of returning to London for exams, Rabin was living it up in the south of France.

When he returned to Charleston, Rabin was drafted.

“So I went to Fort Gordon, Fort Dix for advanced individual training for combat and eventually to Fort Benning. I went to officer candidate school, which turned out to be very easy after The Citadel, and then I went into the service, and loved every single minute of it.”

Rabin was a battalion S4 logistics officer in tank gunnery maneuvers in Grafenwoehr, West Germany, when he was charged with planning a party for a retiring colonel, John B. Wadsworth. Wadsworth loved Old GrandDad bourbon, so Rabin made a big cake to resemble a bottle of Old Grand-Dad, and inside the cake were actual bottles of the bourbon. The party was a success, and Rabin was ordered by the commanding general to take over the failing officers’ club in Augsburg. When Rabin argued that he knew nothing of running a business, the general countered, “Boy, you’re Jewish, aren’t you? You Jews know how to make money.”

Rabin was offended, and more importantly, he wanted to go to Vietnam, but he knew that an order was an order. “So I took it over, and it made money, and I got the Army Commendation Medal. Big deal.”

But it was a big deal—Rabin’s creative flair was getting noticed and he found himself in his father’s entrepreneurial footsteps.

In the early 1970s Rabin began working at Bloomingdale’s in New York City as an assistant buyer.

On the floor next to him was another young Jewish man and the designer of a line of wide, handmade ties being sold by Bloomingdale’s. His name was Ralph Lauren.

“Ralph, these ties are really ugly,” Rabin remembers saying. “In fact, they’re so ugly they’re going to sell like crazy because they’re so wide. And all of the suits and coat lapels are going to have to grow.”

Rabin’s prophecy proved true. “As a result, the revolution in menswear began right away. Everybody 20

came. It was peacocks. It was Studio 54. It was cocaine.

It was all this crazy stuff in this crazy city.”

At Bloomingdale’s, Rabin hustled.

When a disgruntled buyer quit, leaving behind a big mess and phony orders for the holiday season, Rabin called Leon back in Charleston to find a supplier. “By the time I was done, I filled the department. I was a hero, 36 percent ahead of the rest of the store for the next two years.”

While he was buying for Bloomingdale’s, a company called Bratten Apparel tried to sell Rabin a line of men’s clothing. “Your line is very good. The quality is excellent,” he told them. “But you look like Farah. You look like Levi.

And I don’t need that. I need stuff with color.”

Rabin’s words resonated with the company, and they hired him to design. He designed two color pairs that he featured on Eisenhower jackets, bell bottom pants and knit sweaters. Grapefruit and Grass—chrome yellow and Kelly green—was a crossing plaid on an ecru background.

The second pair was called Ice Blue and Hot Orange.

After Bratten Apparel, Rabin designed for Chester Boutiques which held the licenses for Givenchy and Emilio Pucci and Cortefiel. He colored Pucci prints in Florence, Italy, before going to Spain to design leather goods for Cortefiel. And then he went to Oscar de la Renta where he designed the entire men’s line, combining rubber Hunter boots with denim jeans, a black velvet jacket and a banded collar tuxedo shirt.

After Oscar de la Renta came Peter Elliot,* a men’s store Rabin opened on the Upper East Side of New York with a partner named Peter Lonergan. Peter Elliot was a combination of their first names. The name lasted— * Eliot Rabin doing business as Peter Elliot: when he named his business, Rabin chose to add an extra L to his first name because he said it “synced better.”

their partnership did not, and after only two months Rabin became the sole proprietor. Peter Elliot has been in business now for 43 years. There are two stores, a men and boys’ store on Lexington Avenue and a women’s store on Madison Avenue.

Rabin’s success is part ingenuity, part luck. Not long after he went into business, he put together a window display that featured a female mannequin with her foot propped up on a lion’s head and a rifle in her hands. She wore a split skirt, and on her leg was an alligator and snakeskin belt. Within 24 hours of the display’s debut, a women’s rights activist hurled a brick through the window, and Rabin made the front page of The New York Times.

“Eliot is a creative person,” says Sorota. “He has imagination, a phenomenal eye and excellent taste. He’s a pioneer—he was the first to carry some of the classics, like Max Mara and Isaia.”

Rabin’s clients include hedge fund managers, socialites, actors and actresses. Isabelle McNally, the manager for the women’s store who has been working for Rabin for 18 years, says that Peter Elliot has become a tradition in families. “The boys’ line is a niche, luxury business. The future is younger people and the quality of the product. Families shop with us, and now we have this incredible thing—these young people, who have shopped with us from a young age, are now in college and coming back.”

Rabin’s inventory radiates decadence. Seamless cashmere sweaters are made in Italy, England and Scotland using premium wool from the neck of the goat that is gently washed in soft water that does not strip the

oils from the yarn. Luxuriously soft cotton button-down shirts made in America of two-ply cotton with pearl buttons retail for $175 apiece. And elegant jewel-colored silk ties in capricious designs add an elegant touch to a single-needle stitch Italian suit. “Long after the price is forgotten,” Rabin is fond of saying, “the quality remains.”

As he approaches 80, Rabin has no plans to retire.

He’s brimming with ideas and opinions. He says he’s too busy to go to the gym, so he walks the 11 flights up to his Manhattan apartment, and in the spirit of his Citadel days, he drops down for a few pushups. When he was 60, Rabin embarked on yet another great adventure—fatherhood.

In 2018, Rabin ran for Congress, challenging New York’s 12th district incumbent Representative Carolyn Maloney. Maloney won the race, but the retail fashion designer with a meager campaign budget took 12 percent of the vote. “If you want to fix our country, you need to bring back the draft—you need to rebalance our society,” says Rabin who toyed with the idea of running for president.

The next chapter for Rabin remains to be seen. He has a lifetime of wisdom and adventure to his credit, and whatever path he chooses, he is sure to tackle it with his usual energy and aplomb. #

Distinguished Alumni The newest addition to the Distinguished Citadel Alumni List (DCAL) is Morris D. Robinson, ’91. The 2017 commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient was added to the DCAL in December for his accomplishments.

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Robinson’s desire to play college football resulted in a scholarship to play for The Citadel where he was a three-time 1-AA All American offensive lineman, graduating in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in English.

As a freshman, he became known as the “singing knob" for his impromptu serenades to fellow cadets and his performance of "O Holy Night" at the annual Christmas candlelight concert.

He also co-founded and sang in the gospel choir. He was featured in Sports Illustrated and on CBS Sports College Football Today. In 1991, he was invited to sing the national anthem at the NBA All-Star Game in Charlotte, North Carolina.

After graduating he lived in the Washington D.C. area.

His wife Denise arranged a successful tryout with the Choral Arts Society of Washington. After moving to New Hampshire he attracted the attention of the Boston University Opera Institute. He entered the program in 1999 and that same year made his operatic debut with the Boston Lyric Opera as the King of Egypt in Aida. He went on to become one of only nine singers in the world accepted into the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program, sponsored by the Metropolitan Opera.

His debut at the Met in 2002 was in a production of Fidelio.

Recently Robinson performed in the musical Showboat in the role of Joe. In the fall of 2016, he made his debut at La Scala in Milan, Italy, with the lead role in Porgy and Bess.

Robinson has also performed regularly with the National Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. He was the second person to be named artistin-residence for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and in 2017 he was named an artistic advisor for the Cincinnati Opera. He was the first black artist to sign a recording deal with a major classical label. In 2019 he was named resident artist at Harvard University.

Matriculation Class of 2023 cadet recruits reported to campus Saturday, Aug. 17. More than 700 men and women from over 40 states and four countries checked in to begin their college careers at the #1 public college in the South.

The freshmen recruits’ processing began at the Holiday Alumni Center where they received their company and barrack room assignments. Then they proceeded to their home barrack to pick up a set of physical training uniforms and move into their rooms with the help of parents from The Citadel Family Association.

Most members of the Class of 2023 were born in the year 2001. That puts them right in the center of Generation Z which is “on track to be the most diverse, best-educated generation yet,” according to Pew Research Center. These postMillennials were born just before or after the 9/11 attacks and many witnessed their family’s financial challenges created by the great recession of the late 2000s.

The freshmen entered college at a time when they could select from the most robust menu of academic programs available at The Citadel, the newest among them being computer engineering, finance, nursing and supply chain management. Cadet academic areas of study anticipated to be among the most popular include business administration, engineering, intelligence and security studies, cyber security, criminal justice, political science and biology.

The Oath Ceremony for the class was held on Monday, Aug. 19. As future members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, the class stood together on Summerall Field where they pledged to abide by the college’s core values of honor, duty and respect.

A highlight of Parents' Weekend was the presentation of rings to eligible members of the Class of 2020. Cadets marched to McAlister Field House, being cheered on by knobs, before receiving their rings in front of a crowd of family and friends.

Following the presentation of rings, cadets ran across Summerall Field to salute the War Memorial then tap their rings on the door of Summerall Chapel before running to the barracks to toast their classmates with sparkling cider.

Saturday morning of Parents' Weekend was busy for parents and cadets alike. Barracks opened at 8:30 a.m. and parents filed in, both to see the Pipe Band and Freshman Promotion Ceremony in each of the five barracks. The annual Kelly Cup competition finals also took place on the quadrangle of Padgett-Thomas Barracks followed by a Rifle Legion performance.

While waiting for parade, parents and guests were treated to a Carillon Concert. At 11:00 a.m. parade began. Regimental Commander Richard Snyder, and his family joined General Walters for a jeep review. After parade, the Bulldogs took on the VMI Keydets in The Military Classic of the South, losing 21-34 and sending the Silver Shako to Lexington, Va., for the first time in since 2002.

Leadership Day For more than 176 years, The Citadel has been a part of the Charleston community. That is one reason why cadets volunteer their time to the Lowcountry community all year long. Servant leadership through community service is also integral to the college’s mission of developing cadets into principled leaders. In fact, in the 2018-2019 academic year, cadets provided 35,894 service hours, according to the college’s Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics.

Leadership Day, held every year in October, is just one of the many ways cadets serve their communities. On Wednesday, Oct. 23, cadets, faculty and staff participating in Leadership Day 2019 focused on leadership learning and volunteering with the assistance of Medal of Honor recipient James McCloughan. The Vietnam War veteran, who taught high school before and after his time in the service, helped kick off this academic year’s Leadership Day with a presentation to freshmen.

All freshmen and sophomores worked in groups throughout the Lowcountry, participating in service learning and civic engagement. Freshmen spent the

day in different elementary schools, increasing young students’ awareness of heroism and service to others.

Sophomores were able to choose from a variety of service projects on and off campus.

Cadets served at more than 20 locations in the Lowcountry, involved in tasks such as leading classroom activities for children in local elementary and middle schools, helping homeless veterans and cleaning up parks.

While freshmen and sophomores engage in service learning on Leadership Day, junior and senior cadets participate in leadership training or seminars. The juniors took part in an on-campus Ethics Enrichment Experience. To learn from Lowcountry leaders, seniors visited area businesses and organizations based on their area of study.

On average, more than 8,000 hours of service to the Lowcountry are provided by the cadets each Leadership Day, and more than 20,000 annually, according to The Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics.

When Page Tisdale and her daughter went on college visits last year, they always visited the institution’s career center first. For Tisdale, who serves as director of The Citadel Career Center, workforce preparation is ultimately the point of a college education.

Tisdale began her career in human resources and corporate recruiting. After 11 years in the corporate world, she landed at The Citadel in 2009 where she earned a master’s in counselor education and began working in the career center. Now, she’s on a mission to impact every student—a goal she takes personally.

“Because we’re a small college, we can really get to know each of our students and their interests,” says Tisdale. “When we learn their goals and passions early, we can help make more meaningful connections, whether it’s shadowing an alum in a certain industry or making connections with informational interviews.”

Engaging with the career center early is Tisdale’s greatest advice to cadets. Preparation for successful early career outcomes starts freshman year.

“Freshmen come into the career center a blank canvas, not knowing what they want to do with their lives or why they’re in our office—just that they were told by their TAC and academic officers to come here,” says Tisdale. “Each year gives them a little more confidence, and by senior year they know who they are and what they want, they are polished interviewers, and they have plans and back-up plans.”

Like most college career centers, the career center provides job search assistance and teaches salary negotiation, interview skills and writing resume preparation. But, while many college career centers are there for students who seek them out, The Citadel takes a more involved approach. Career services are integrated into the culture of the college: career preparation is embedded into the curriculum, and career counselors proactively drop into classrooms or the barracks to ensure cadets are active participants in preparing for future success.

Employers can see the difference.

“They see our leadership model, they see that our cadets are outperforming their peers at other colleges in interviews and in networking. I get constant feedback from employment partners and mentors that our cadets are dignified,” says Tisdale. “It’s not uncommon for our intern supervisors to tell me our cadets show up early, take extra shifts, and step up. Their work ethic and dependability are obvious.”

The reason? Tisdale says The Citadel is an attractive college choice for conscientious students.

“It’s a tough choice for kids to come here—it’s not an easy place to be. That choice alone is something that sets them up for success in job placement.”

The college’s rigorous values-based education instills attributes employers value. Average starting salary and job placement rates for Citadel graduates exceed national statistics. Pair this with an above-average, four-year graduation rate, and it’s obvious why so many families are attracted to the benefits of a Citadel education.

In fact, The Citadel has the highest return on investment in the state of South Carolina among other four-year colleges, according to a study by the Georgetown University Center on Education in the Workforce. And, according to the U.S. Department of Education College Scorecard, among comprehensive colleges in the state of South Carolina, The Citadel has the highest postgraduation salaries.

The job placement rate for cadets at graduation is above the national average at 76%—a statistic that is credited in part to the strength of the alumni network.

“It comes full circle,” says Tisdale. “Time again I’ve seen our alumni come to help. And the cadets we help place are coming back to recruit cadets. I have 10-15 conversations a week with alumni who want to give back— through advice, mentorship, internship opportunities, and even job placement.”

Tisdale’s passion for her work is infectious.

“There’s never a day that I’m not excited about educating students about opportunities. I love what I do, and I want to empower every student to find the same."

America's Band Returns to Scotland for 2020 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes will proudly represent the United States as the country's designated military band performing at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland in 2020. The band will represent America for the fourth time, and remains the only U.S. military college band to have received the coveted invitation to perform on behalf of the nation in the world's most famous military music festival.

The Citadel's band will perform on the esplanade of the medieval Edinburgh Castle from August 7 through August 29, 2020, as part of the month-long festival of music and pageantry featuring military organizations from around the world. Broadcast to 30 countries and approximately 100 million people annually, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is the largest production of its kind.

Much has been done on the organ restoration project since our last update. The pipes for the north chamber have been restored and are being tuned at Cornell Zimmer Organ Builders’ facilities. They are scheduled to be installed this winter and will undergo a final tuning in the chapel, a process that could take several weeks.

The contract for the final set of pipes in the south chamber has been signed, and the restoration of these pipes is underway. If everything goes according to schedule, those will be installed by the end of 2020.

We are very fortunate to have been named in the will of Dr. Thomas, a Charleston physician, a member of a previous organ restoration committee years ago. This effort was not successful, but

Thomas kept his commitment to restore the organ, if certain conditions were met. These conditions, to ensure that a serious commitment to restore the organ was underway, have been met by current efforts and Thomas’ estate provided the funding to complete the restoration project.

The restoration of the Summerall Chapel organ started in earner in 2013. The project involved restoring the pipe chambers, rebuilding all of the wind chests that the pipes rest in, and rebuilding the huge blower motor that resides in the basement of the chapel. When complete, some 3,900 pipes will have been restored, and a new trumpet military set of pipes, 64, have been installed above to the chapel.

When the work is complete, hopefully by the end of 2020, The Citadel will have one of the most outstanding organs in the Southeast. The magnificent acoustical chamber in the chapel makes for an outstanding sound chamber for the organ.

This restoration will give Summerall Chapel an organ that will serve The Citadel for many years to come.

In the spotlight Did you know there's a non-profit organization that makes big impact on the Bulldog football team and programs?

Started in 1984 by Charlie Baker, ’71, and several other former football players, the CFA provided the first Steak Night meals for the team after each game of the season. From this modest beginning The Citadel Football Association has grown to become a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization open to all who support the Bulldog football team—former players, managers, cheerleaders, fans, player parents and friends of Citadel Football. Their major goal: to provide an avenue for alumni and friends to support the football program.

CFA's membership has grown to over 500 supporters who choose from six membership levels with benefits that range from Member/Guest area on South Terrace during home games, weekly emails from Head Coach Brent Thompson, merchandise, to free tickets to one Away SOCON game, Sideline Game Pass, teams in one of our two golf tournaments and much more.

In addition to enjoying member activities such as Signing Night and the Football Awards Banquet, CFA funding provides financial support for nutritional snacks for the team, summer meals for players, recruiting/professional development trips for coaches, equipment enhancement/repair, computer/software enhancement and more. The CFA has renovated the team locker room and improved the Wilson Practice Field lighting. Over 40 programs and projects have been completed, while others are still ongoing.

CFA has committed a budget of over $150,000 this year to supplement the Athletic Deportment funding for football. Tips for Publication of Photos Please note: any photo printed in alumni news will be no better than the quality of the photo submitted. It is important to follow these guidelines when choosing images. To be fair to all, a limit of one photo per 24-month period is in effect. Submit all photos with descriptive cutline (the event, place, date, etc. along with full names and class years) to alumninews@citadelalumni.org.

Digital submissions (preferred) size of at least 4MB or larger. An example would be from a digital camera capable of at least a 10.0 megapixel photo set on its highest resolution (highest camera quality setting). Photos from smart phones, while convenient, must be sent at their highest/original quality to be printed.

Printed submissions clippings do not reproduce well and often appear with a screened pattern which is unacceptable for publication. larger the size of the photo you send, the smaller the DPI needed for scanning. We can reduce large photos to print sizes and increase DPI. The closer a submitted photo is to the actual printed size, the higher the DPI level must be.

The Citadel's Provisional Appointment Policy Provisional Appointments of admission to the S.C. Corps of Cadets may be awarded to the infant sons, daughters, grandsons or granddaughters of Citadel alumni. A student who has reached his/her 12th birthday is no longer eligible for Provisional Appointment. Students who receive a Provisional Appointment must still apply to The Citadel and must meet all admission requirements for the cadet class that he or she is applying to join. The Citadel will guarantee a place in the Corps of Cadets for any Provisional Appointee who meets all admission requirements if an application portfolio is submitted and completed prior to January 25 of the applicant’s senior year in high school. Taps 1939 Dr. William Robert Barrett, Jr.

1945 George Edward (Mr. Two Bits) Edmondson, Jr.

William R. Barrett, Jr., of Florence, died Sept. 26, 2019. He was a U.S. Army infantry veteran of World War II campaigns in the Mediterranean theater. He was a German professor for 25 years in North Carolina and New Hampshire.

Barrett is survived by two sons.

George E. (Mr. Two Bits) Edmondson, of Tampa, Fla., died July 2, 2019. He was a U.S. Navy night fighter pilot (Hellcat) on a carrier, Air Group 13 and survived a crash landing in the Atlantic Ocean at night in 1944. Edmondson was aboard the USS Saratoga on its way to the Pacific when the war ended. After the war, he worked for several insurance agencies before joining his father at Edmondson & Co. and later Fickling & Walker until his retirement. For 60 years, Edmondson opened each University of Florida Gators home game in his signature yellow button-down and orange-and-blue tie with his signature chant, “Two bits! Four bits!

Six bits! A dollar! All for the Gators, stand up and holler!� Edmondson began the chant at a Gators game against The Citadel in 1949 when he felt upset seeing fans boo the inexperienced Florida players. He stood up, did the chant and kept doing it game after game. In 1970, Edmondson was named an honorary cheerleader and started sponsoring a cheerleading scholarship in 1982.

He and his wife were made honorary University of Florida alumni. He was also a member of Christ the King Catholic Church.

Edmondson is survived by his wife, Jane Edmondson, 1032 S. Sterling Ave., Tampa, Fla. 33629-5129; a son, a daughter, a stepson, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

1941 Kenneth Martin Worthy K. Martin Worthy, of Chevy Chase, Md., died Aug. 11, 2019. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army in World War II and the Korean War. A longtime Washington, D.C., tax attorney, who served as chief council of the Internal Revenue Service by presidential appointment and Senate confirmation from 1969 to 1972, he came to Washington in 1947 and for more than 40 years practiced law with the firm of Hamel, Park & Saunders and its successor, Hopkins & Sutter (now Foley & Lardner).

Worthy is survived by a son, three stepdaughters, two stepsons, 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

1943 Frank Cary Riddick, Jr. Frank C. Riddick, Jr., of Corona, Calif., died April 28, 2019. Riddick was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association. No further information is available.

1944 LTC Haskell Calhoun (Hack) Cook, USAR, Ret. LTC Haskell C. (Hack) Cook, USAR, Ret., of Spartanburg, died July 14, 2019. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe as a mortar platoon leader with the 97th Infantry Division and in occupied Japan as a paratrooper and company executive officer with the 11th Airbourne Division. Cook remained active in the U.S. Army Reserve for 26 years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He later worked for 39 years with Kaiser Agricultural Chemicals.

He was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

Cook is survived by two daughters, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

1946 Kenneth Wellington Hendy Kenneth W. Hendy, of Rockport, Mass., died July 2, 2019. He served during World War II as a member of the 19th Bombardment Squad in the Pacific theater and as a member of the 93rd Bombardment Squad in Europe for the U.S. Air Force. Hendy was a former postal worker for the U.S. Postal Service.

Hendy is survived by two sons, a daughter and four grandchildren.

1948 William Volney Scruggs William V. Scruggs, of Westlake Village, Calif., died Sept. 2, 2019. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Scruggs joined the FBI in 1951 and retired in 1979 as a supervisor in the Los Angeles field office after 28 years of service. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

1948 Andrew Jerome (Jerry) Zoldos Andrew J. (Jerry) Zoldos, of Malvern, Pa., died Sept. 14, 2019. He furthered his education at the University of Pennsylvania where he also served as an instructor. Zoldos served his country during World War II as an operating room technician for the U.S. Army aboard two hospital ships in the Pacific theater. He retired from Wyeth Laboratories (now Pfizer) after 38 years of service. One of his professional achievements was co-authoring a book named Basic Concepts of Anatomy and Physiology while working at Wyeth.

Zoldos is survived by a son, two daughters, six grandchildren and a great-grandson.

1949 John Kenneth Charles, Jr. J. Kenneth Charles, Jr. of Florence, died Oct. 18, 2019. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Charles later joined his father-in-law in the life insurance business, becoming the general agent for Minnesota Mutual Life Insurance Company. He was a member and past president of the Lions Club.

He was an elder at Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Charles is survived by his wife, Betty B. Charles, 2100 Twin Church Road Unit 40, Florence, S.C. 29501-8285; a son, a sister, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three nieces.

1949 Dr. James Pierce Horton, Jr. Dr. J. Pierce Horton Jr., of Lancaster, died June 28, 2019. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and attended the Medical College of South Carolina after returning to complete his degree at The Citadel. Horton opened his first medical office in Lancaster in 1954, was appointed to the medical staff of the Marion Sims Memorial Hospital and was the Lancaster County physician for several years. He was a member of the Lancaster County Medical Society, the S.C. Medical Society and the American Medical Association. In 1969, Horton was published in the Southern Medical Journal, with Dr. Billy Duke. He was on the board of directors and

was chief of staff at Springs Memorial Hospital.

As chairman of the ad hoc committee, Horton worked to preserve the hospital in the early 80s and lobbied to preserve the practical nursing program. He was a member of the Lancaster Medical Endowment and the American Academy of Family Physicians. Horton served as medical director of the Grace White Nursing Home, the Marion Sims Nursing Home and the Lancaster Recovery Center. He was a member of the American Medical Society on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies, Inc. Horton was on the board of directors at Saluda Psychological Services Center and was area director of the Southern Piedmont Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. He donated medical services to JAARS, HOPE in Lancaster and the Lancaster County Rape Crisis Center. Horton was medical consultant to Kanawha, KMG and Humana Insurance companies for 35 years. The S.C. Medical Association’s board of trustees voted to award Horton honorary membership status in the S.C. Medical Association for his contributions. Horton was a lay leader and chairman of committees, including the administrative board, pastor-parish relations and the campaign committee at First United Methodist Church. He was in the leadership of the stewardship committee, a member of the building committee and the Methodist Mission trip to Russia. He was also a Sunday school teacher and member of the chancel choir. In 1996, a special mission recognition was awarded to Horton by the United Methodist Women. He was a member, president and board member of the Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Lancaster Rotary Club, where he was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. He received the State of South Carolina Certificate of Recognition for his contributions to the establishment of Lancaster County Partners for Youth as a founding member of the Lancaster Medical Endowment. Horton was owner and president of J.F. Mackey Drug Co. and later became owner and president of Lancaster Drug Company. He was elected director of First Federal Savings & Loan Association of Lancaster and of Security Federal Savings and Loan Association. Horton was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

He is survived by a son, two daughters, a stepdaughter, five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and five step-greatgrandchildren.

1949 Dr. Francis Joseph Maly Francis J. Maly, of Lexington, Ky., died Oct. 13, 2019. He joined the U.S. Air Force

and served in Japan during the Korean War. Afterward, Maly graduated from the University of Illinois’ School of Dentistry and received a master’s degree in restorative dentistry from the University of Michigan. He was a clinical instructor at the University of Michigan Dental School and the University of Illinois and served as president of the Washtenaw District Dental Society. He also had a private practice in Ann Arbor, Mich., for 44 years.

Maly is survived by his wife, Diana A. Maly, 926 Village Green Ave., Lexington, Ky. 926; three children, a stepdaughter, seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

1949 Hugh Parshall Murray Hugh P. Murray, of Pine Bluff, Ark., died July 30, 2019. Hugh joined the U.S. Army during World War II, fought in the Pacific campaign and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Murray had long career with Arkansas Power & Light as division sales manager and with the Arkansas State Highway Department as an internal auditor. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church of Pine Bluff.

Murray is survived by his wife, Louise Murray, 39 Southwood Drive, Pine Bluff, Ark. 71603-6239; a son, a daughter, a stepson, three stepdaughters, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

1949 COL Edward Bernard Turner, Jr., USA, Ret. COL Edward B. Turner, Jr., USA, Ret., of Charleston, died Oct. 27, 2019. He served for 28 years in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1977. His assignments took him to destinations worldwide including two tours in Vietnam, Germany and Hawaii. His last command was with the Defense Contract Administration Region, Atlanta. Turner attended the Army Command and General Staff College and participated in the Army War College. His decorations include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Services Commendation Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. Upon retirement Turner joined Parsons, Brinkerhoff-Tudor, the general architect and engineer for the Metropolitan Area Rapid Transit project in Atlanta. He later joined Fabrique Nationale’s FN Manufacturing Co. in Columbia. Turner was elected Kiawah Island’s first mayor in 1989 and led the logistical recovery and clean-up following Hurricane Hugo that same year. He was a member of Old Saint Andrews Parish Church where he served

on the vestry and was project manager for the preservation and restoration of the 300-yearold church. Turner was a past member of the Kiawah Seabrook Exchange Club, the Spring Valley Rotary Club and the American Legion.

Turner was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife, Mary N. Turner, 3 Bishop Gadsden Way Unit 3117, Charleston, S.C. 29412-3589; three sons, including MAJ J. Timothy Turner, USA, ’75, 128 Parkside Drive, Anderson, S.C. 29621-7651; and BG Wallace N. Turner, USA, ’83, 1617 Brookmonte Drive S.E., Puyallup, Wash. 98372-5192 ; a daughter, three grandsons, two granddaughters, a greatgrandson and a sister.

1950 Dr. Augustus Baldwin Dudley, Jr.

Dr. Augustus B. Dudley, Jr., of Columbus, Ga., died Aug. 11, 2019. He graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in 1954 and was an intern and a resident in internal medicine at the Medical College of Virginia until 1957. Dudley served his country in the U.S. Army Medical Corps for two years, most of which was served at U.S. Army Hospital Camp Zama in Japan. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Dudley practiced internal medicine until 1995 in Columbus. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry and helped the church resettle Vietnamese refugees. Dudley was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Columbus for 58 years and helped judge the club’s scholarship program for eighth graders. He was a supporter of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, serving on its board for several years and received the G. Gunby Jordan Vision in the Arts Award in 2003. He was a docent at the Columbus Museum and served as president of the Columbus Men’s Garden Club.

Dudley was an officer of the Columbus chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution and was active in Republican Party activities. He was a member of the Friday Friars social club.

Dudley was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

He is survived by two sons, a daughter, four grandchildren and his nieces and nephews.

He completed his residency at Grady Memorial in Atlanta, Ga., and practiced as a urologist in Spartanburg from 1963 until 1997. Graham served as chief of staff at Spartanburg Regional Hospital, Mary Black Hospital and Doctors Memorial Hospital. He was a member of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Spartanburg.

Graham was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy K. Graham, 303 Essex Ridge Court, Spartanburg, S.C. 293071540; five sons, seven grandchildren, a greatgrandson and a nephew.

1950 John Heslep Moorman John H. (Jack) Moorman, of West Columbia, died Oct. 3, 2019.

He was commissioned as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army and later worked with Heslep Construction and with Bonitz of Columbia. Moorman then began a 32-year career with Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner and Smith in Columbia, retiring in 1994.

He served on the vestry, as senior warden and as a youth Sunday school teacher. Moorman was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

He is survived by four children, including John H. Moorman, Jr., ’83, 3205 Devine St., Columbia, S.C. 29205-1847; William T. Moorman, ’86, 4528 Nandina Drive, Columbia, S.C. 29206-4514; and Thomas V. Moorman, ’88, P.O. Box 1762, Mount Pleasant, S.C. 294651762; 10 grandchildren, including Cadet W. 1950 COL William David Palmer, Jr., USA, Ret. COL William D. Palmer, Jr., USA, Ret., of Charleston, died Oct. 4, 2019. He served in the U.S. Army for 22 years in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. Palmer received his master’s degree in criminal justice in 1977 from the University of South Carolina. He was a member of the Ashley River Baptist Church, where he was a member of the senior choir and served as a deacon. Palmer was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

He is survived by a son, three daughters, four stepchildren, eight grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren.

1950 Thomas Sanders Rice Thomas S. Rice, of Fort Mill, died Aug. 10, 2019. He was a U.S. Army sergeant who landed at Normandy during the 1944 Invasion of Europe. Rice received a Bronze Star medal for meritorious achievement at the Battle of the Bulge. He studied at the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. Rice worked in forest conservation for a paper company in Charleston, taught accounting at a Columbia business college and was the manager of home delivery of The State newspaper. He was later a manager for an equipment company in West Columbia and went on to work in security services. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

Rice is survived by two daughters, a cousin and eight nieces and nephews.

1951 Jack Croxton Bennett Jack C. Bennett, of Charleston, died Oct. 9, 2019. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and received an honorable discharge in 1952.

Bennett was plant engineer and later general manager with Tidewater Concrete Block and Pipe Company in Charleston. In 1979, Lone Star Industries acquired the Tidewater Company and he remained with this company for the next 10 years, primarily responsible for the operations of six concrete products plants in the Southeast. In 1992, he joined Temple Trucking, Inc., and served as vice president and general manager until June 2002. In 2005, Bennett became a realtor and worked with Harbourtowne Real Estate until his retirement there and began preparing tax returns for the Charleston Trident Urban League (CTUL). In 2007, he accepted the position of coordinator of the tax program with CTUL. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and an elder. Bennett was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife, Marian F. Bennett, 2299 Portside Way, Charleston, S.C. 29407-9657; a brother, five children, five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a nephew. Bennett is predeceased by his brother, Gilbert D. Bennett, Jr., ’59.

1951 William Lawrence Burnette William L. Burnette, of Asheville, N.C., died Aug. 25, 2019. He was an armament specialist on B29 bombers in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Burnette was an insurance salesman for most of his working career. He was involved in the West Asheville Kiwanis, having served as president and trustee. He was a

member of West Asheville Baptist Church since 1951, serving as a deacon.

Burnette is survived by two children, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

1951 LTC Dorsey Boyd Greene, Jr., USA, Ret. LTC Dorsey B. Greene, Jr., USA, Ret., of Marietta, Ga., died July 29, 2019. He received an MBA degree from Syracuse University and an Ed.D. degree from Stetson University. Greene served in the U.S. Army with a tour of duty in Vietnam. Greene received the Meritorious Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Armed Forces Honor Medal (1st Class), the Vietnam Services Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, two O/S Bars, the Air Medal, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany).

He was inducted as a Mason in 1955. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. Greene was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

1952 Ramon Palazuelos Ramon Palazuelos, of Palmetto Bay, Fla., died May 8, 2018. He began his career with General Electric Company in 1952 as a test engineer and held many positions with that company, including specialist in transportation sales for the international division in New York City, specialist in electric utility and transportation sales in Bogota, Colombia, manager in Bogota, industry control specialist with product planning and marketing research in Salem, Va., manager for market planning in the medium AC motor and generator department in Schenectady, N.Y., manager of producer goods marketing operation in Puerto Rico, manager of Latin American sales operations and vice president for Latin American sales operations in Miami. Palazuelos retired from GE at the end of 1989. After retirement he helped his son form a Murano glass jewelry business, ALRam. Palazuelos is survived by four children and seven grandchildren.

1952 Dr. James Lilburn Reed, Jr. Dr. James L. Reed, Jr., of Pensacola, Fla. died August 8, 2019. During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at

Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., where he worked in the climate hangar testing missiles and bombs.

Reed attended and graduated valedictorian from the University of Alabama-Birmingham’s School of Dentistry in 1962 and began his dental practice in Pensacola. He returned to UAB for a degree in orthodonture which he practiced until his retirement in 1995. Reed was a one-time president of the dental society in Northwest Florida, a Mason and a Scottish Rite member. He regularly attended Waterfront Rescue Mission meetings. Reed attended the First Christian Church in Pensacola. he was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

Reed is survived by two sons, including Lt Col Thomas G. Reed, USAF, ’86, 1102 Magnolia Circle, Papillion, Neb. 68046-6218; a granddaughter, a grandson and two greatgrandsons.

1953 Arthur Reginald Mann, Jr. Arthur R. Mann, of Keswick, Va., died August 12, 2019. He served in the U.S. Air Force.

Mann worked at General Electric for 20 years at the senior management level and led two aviation companies as a CEO. Mann is survived by a son, a daughter and two sisters.

Mark N. Hagan, of Roswell, Ga., died July 28, 2019. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked his entire 37-year career for Southern Bell/AT&T. Hagan was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

Thomas J. Wysockey, of Northbrook, Ill., died July 9, 2019. He was chairman emeritus of Thatcher Foundations Inc., which he joined in 1957 after a short stint in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Wysockey was a board member of the American Subcontractors Association (ASA), director of the Builders Association and the Chicagoland Construction Safety Council, trustee of the Construction Advancement Foundation, trustee of the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI), president of the Industrial Contractors and Builders Association of Indiana, board member of the Society of American Military Engineers, member of the Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings, and president of the Pile Driving Contractors Association. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the ASA, Chicago chapter. The DFI awards two annual scholarships in his name for undergraduate or graduate study. He was the 2019 recipient of the DFI Legends Award in Construction. Wysockey was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

Joe E. Kay, of Marietta, Ga., died Sept. 23, 2019. He served seven years in the U.S. Army on active duty attaining the rank of captain.

Kay was senior aide-de-camp to three general officers in Italy and Austria. He retired after 18 years at Williams Foods, Inc., as a senior vice president.

Kay is survived by two children and two grandchildren.

Rev. Julian P. Griffin, of Burlington, N.C., died Jan. 4, 2018. He was pastor emeritus of Chestnut Level Baptist Church in Blairs, Va. and served in multiple interim pastorates in North Carolina and Virginia. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Alamance, a Paul Harris Fellow, a major donor to the Rotary Foundation and a past Rotary district governor. Griffin was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife Betty MorinGriffin, 2606 Passavant Court, Burlington, N.C. 27215-9813; two daughters, three greatgrandchildren, a brother and a sister.

1953 Robert Arthur Guillebeau Robert A. Guillebeau, of Albertville, Ala., died Aug. 23, 2019. He was employed by Mitchell Grocery for 17 years as an accountant. He was a member of Albertville First Baptist Church.

Guillebeau is survived by his special friend, Bobbie Young; a son, a daughter, four granddaughters; a great-granddaughter and two great-grandsons. Guillebeau is predeceased by his brother, Otis P. Guillebeau, Jr., ’51.

Maj W. Garbade Carter, USAF, Ret., of Okatie, died Sept. 3, 2019. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and served for 20 years before retiring in 1975 as a major. He was a founding member of the Episcopal Church of Okatie.

Carter is survived by his wife, Carol Carter, 79 Echotango Road, Okatie, S.C. 29909; two children, five grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

1955 Charles Adams Moore C. Adams Moore, of Boynton Beach, Fla., died May 23, 2019. He served in the U.S. Air Force, resigning with the rank of captain, and enrolled in the loop training program at Bethlehem Steel Corp. Moore worked as a salesman in Richmond, Va., and in the home office in Bethlehem, Pa. In 1966 he was promoted to assistant manager of the sales plate production division and in 1972 Moore became the youngest manager of sales in the company. In 1976 he was promoted to manager of the Chicago district sales office and in 1983 he became vice president of sales, where he remained for nine more years. He was also president of the Bethlehem Steel Export Corporation Association. Upon his retirement he was asked to be on the board of directors of Maverick Tube Corp. as well as Fisher Tank Corp. Moore was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife, Lois L. Moore, 4702 S. Lake Drive, Boynton Beach, Fla. 334365909; a daughter, Debbie and a son.

1955 Charles Nelson (Boots) Plowden, Jr. Charles N. (Boots) Plowden, Jr., of Columbia, died July 4, 2019. He graduated from the University of South Carolina with B.S. and L.L.B (J.D.) degrees. Plowden served almost four years on active duty in the U.S. Air Force, first as assistant judge advocate and later as acting staff judge advocate of the 7305th Air Base Group in France. He attained the rank of captain and received the National Defense Medal and an Outstanding Merit Award for his organization’s 61

actions in the Congo Crisis. Plowden served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve for 21 years and was placed in the retired reserve as a major.

He practiced law with Nelson Mullins Grier & Scarborough for 11 years, becoming a partner.

Plowden later co-founded the Columbia law firm which bears his name and from which he retired after 37 years of practice. Plowden was on the governing boards of the Society of the Cincinnati of South Carolina and was a member of the S.C. French Huguenot Society. He was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church.

Plowden was an active member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife, Grace (Tee) Zimmerman, 2111 Shady Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29206-4645; a sister, three sons, five grandchildren and his nieces and nephews.

1955 John Peter Tauro John P. Tauro, of Norwich, Conn., died July 20, 2019. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1955. Tauro taught for 35 years at Norwich Free Academy, becoming chairman of the science department.

He received a Master of Science degree from the University of Connecticut, a Master of Science degree from Union College and a Ph.D. degree from Syracuse University.

Tauro is survived by his wife, Mary M. Tauro, 123 Case St., Norwich, Conn. 063601605; three children, four grandchildren, his nieces and a cousin.

1956 LTC James Richard Patterson, Jr., USAF, Ret. LTC James R. Patterson, Jr., USAF, Ret., of Forest Lake, Minn., died Aug. 28, 2019.

He was an officer and pilot in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years and a manager at Lockheed Missiles & Space Company for 17 years. He was a member of the Masonic Order. Patterson was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

He is survived by a daughter, two grandchildren and a great-grandson. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery.

1956 Col Carl Clay Poythress, Jr., USAF, Ret.

Col Carl C. Poythress, Jr., USAF, Ret., of Savannah, Ga., died July 8, 2019. He was commissioned in the U.S. Air Force and entered at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas in September 1956. Poythress completed navigation training at Harlington Air Force Base, Texas, in September 1957. His first operational assignment was with the 17th Air Transport Squadron, Charleston Air Force Base, flying the C-54G and later the C-124C aircraft. While at Charleston, Poythress was temporarily assigned to the 2nd MATS Air Transport Squadron (PROV), Chateauroux Air Base, France, and flew several missions to the Republic of Congo during the Congo crisis in August 1960. He was released from active duty in November 1960 and began working with Ayrest Laboratories in Savannah as a pharmaceutical representative. In May 1962, Poythress joined the 165 TAG, GaANG as an air technician. While in the 165th, he held several positions, including squadron chief navigator, group standardization navigator and squadron scheduling officer. Poythress was a master navigator with more than 9,800 flying hours.

In July 1974, he was assigned as commander of the Air National Guard Combat Readiness Training Center. During his tour as commander, many improvements were made to the CRTC including the reopening and upgrading of the Townsend Bombing Range and the installation of the air-to-air combat training system.

Poythress retired on Oct. 31. 1992, with more than 34 years of military service. At that time, Poythress was promoted to brigadier general in the Georgia National Guard. He received the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. Poythress was president of the National Guard Association of Georgia, president of the Savannah Association of Flying Air National Guardsmen, a member of the Kiwanis Club of Savannah and a member of the Savannah Sport Fishing Club. Poythress was one of the founding members of the Georgia National Guard Insurance Trust and of the Saint David’s Society of Savannah. He was also a member of the Military Order of the World Wars, the Military Officers Association of America, the American Legion and the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. Poythress served in most of the staff positions of the Savannah Flotilla 10-02 of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, including flotilla commander. He was an active member of St. Francis Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry, the building committee and the long-range planning committee.

Poythress was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

He is survived by his daughter and a grandson.

1957 BG Henry Lide DuRant, SCSG BG Henry L. DuRant, USA, Ret., of Charleston, died July 24, 2019. After a year of study at the University of Paris and the University of Strasbourg on a Fulbright Scholarship, he entered active duty and served as an officer in the U.S. Army Intelligence until his retirement as a lieutenant colonel in 1978. DuRant served with both tactical and theater level units in France and Germany and was stationed in Southeast Asia for nine years, serving in Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia. He was assigned twice as assistant Army attaché with the embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and Vientiane, Laos. At the time of his retirement, DuRant was serving as director of plans, programs and analysis with U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command and was the Army representative to the intelligence community interagency training committee.

After retirement, he completed his master’s degree in political science at Georgetown University in 1981. DuRant joined the S.C. State Guard in May 1982 and was full-time administrative officer from January 1984 to March 1995. DuRant then became command historian and commander of the military history detachment. He retired from the State Guard in 1999 with the rank of brigadier general and was awarded the Order of the Silver Crescent by then-Governor Jim Hodges. He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the S.C. Historical Society, the Sons of the American Revolution and the Washington Light Infantry. DuRant was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn R. DuRant, 5 Poulnot Lane, Charleston, S.C. 294016912; three children, including a son, Henry L. DuRant, Jr., ’87, no address available; and three grandchildren.

1958 Ted Lee Lightle Ted L. Lightle, of Columbia, died Sept.

5, 2019. He was general sales and marketing manager for Southern Bell business marketing in South Carolina at the time of his retirement in December 1981. Lightle’s second career was in communications and computer management as assistant director of the S.C. State government division of general services. In 1983, he was appointed director of the division of information resources management from which he retired in 2000. He was honored by former S.C. Governor Carroll Campbell with the Order of the Palmetto and by former Governor James Hodges with the Order of the Silver Crescent.

Lightle is survived by his wife, Bernice Lightle, 222 Pinnacle Drive, Columbia, S.C. 29212-0609; a son, a daughter, two

stepdaughters, a stepson, his grandchildren, his great-grandchildren and his nephews. Lightle was predeceased by his twin brother Jack T. Lightle, ’58.

1958 Dr. Joseph Blancet Richardson Dr. Joseph B. Richardson, of Kinnelon, N.J., died July 27, 2019. He received a B.A. degree in zoology from Rutgers University, a M.S. degree in anatomy from New York Medical College and a Ph.D. in zoology from Rutgers University. Richardson also received a graduate certificate in work life ministry from Seton Hall University. He served for 10 years in the U.S. Army in Germany, Vietnam and the United States. Richardson also served in the New Jersey National Guard. He was a professor and director of campus planning at Ramapo College. After retiring from Ramapo, Richardson established Whitehall Associates Inc. He served as a deacon for Our Lady of Magnificat in Kinnelon and Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Boonton, N.J. Richardson was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

1960 Harry Eugene Lindsey, Jr. Harry E. Lindsey, Jr., of Boiling Springs, died June 11, 2019. He spent five years in the

U.S. Air Force. Lindsey then worked for the U.S. government in Augusta, Ga., and later with base engineers at Fort Bragg, N.C. After that he opened a heating and air conditioning company in Fayetteville, N.C. Lindsey was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

1960 George Duncan Lott III G. Duncan Lott, III, of Georgetown, died July 7, 2019. He served two years as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army stationed in Texas, Georgia and Florida. Lott’s career was in the construction materials industry with engineering and management positions in South Carolina, Virginia, Texas, Connecticut and Florida. He was a board member of the National Ready Mix Concrete Association, an honorary chairman of the Boca Bacchanal Wine Festival, a board member and chairman of Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club in Boca Raton, Fla. and a board member of DCCA DeBordieu Colony. He was a member and sponsor of Ducks Unlimited. Lott was a member of the Horry County Citadel Club and a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

1960 COL William Ernest Moeller, Jr., USA, Ret. COL William E. Moeller, Jr., USA, Ret., of Boise, Idaho, June 18, 2019. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1960.

Moeller achieved the rank of full bird colonel when he retired after more than two decades in the U.S. Army. He served two tours in Vietnam and served as a battalion commander. His last assignment was as deputy commander of an engineering brigade in Stuttgart, Germany.

After returning from Vietnam, he earned two master’s degrees, one in engineering and one in architecture, from Texas A&M. In the early 1980s, Moeller served as deputy district engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Walla Walla, Wash., then taught at Walla Walla Community College. Moeller was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife, Georgeanne E. Moeller, 50 Evergreen Drive, Boise, Idaho, 83716-3394; a son, a daughter, a granddaughter,

1960 COL Mark Boone Whitaker, Jr., USA, Ret. COL Mark B. Whitaker, Jr., USA, Ret., of Mount Pleasant, died, Oct. 11, 2019. He was commissioned in the U.S. Army and served in Korea and Granada. Whitaker was a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law and also held an MBA from USC. He began his career with SCE&G, where he supervised the design, construction and operation of the original V.C. Summer Nuclear Plant. Whitaker worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Savannah River Site, where he was a key member of the team that successfully restarted the Savannah River K-Production Reactor. In 1993, Whitaker moved to the position of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) representative to the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board. He held this position for 13 years, retiring in 2010.

Whitaker was a career U.S. Army reservist as part of the Judge Advocate’s General Corps and retired as a colonel. He received a Presidential Point of Light Nomination from the DOE and the Secretary of Energy’s Volunteer Service Award in 1991 and 1992. He supported the United Way of the Midlands and the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, where he was the Armed Services Committee chairman.

Whitaker supported the American Red CrossCentral South Carolina chapter for 10 years and served as its president and chairman of the board. He served as president and chairman of the board for both the Aiken Symphony Guild and the Children’s Place, of which he was elected a lifetime member of its board of directors.

Whitaker was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association He is survived by his wife Connie C. Whitaker, 135 N. Plaza Court, Mount Pleasant, S.C. 29464-6301; a daughter, a son and a grandson.

1961 Alexander Benson, Jr. Alexander Benson, Jr., of Middletown, N.J., died Oct. 16, 2019. He began his career with the Carteret Bank and Trust company, where he rose to be president. Following his banking career Benson worked for the government, first for the FDIC and later as a medical fraud examiner. He retired as an investigator for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Newark, N.J., in 2010.

J. Richard Lucas, of Arlington, Texas, died Oct. 12, 2019. He earned a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Dallas. Lucas switched retired from a career in electronic sales in 2012. He was a member of the Sunrise Rotary Club and the First United Methodist Church of Arlington. Lucas was an active member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

Lake E. (Rick) Terrell III, of Jacksonville, Fla., died August 3, 2019. He obtained his MBA from the University of South Carolina. Terrell served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and afterward was engaged in construction and resort development with Constan, the Hilton Head Company, Arvida and Terrell Construction Company. He was a member of Church of the Redeemer, serving on the vestry and on mission trips. Terrell was an active member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

1962 Francis Xavier Pignone, Jr. Francis X. Pignone, of Orlando, Fla., died Aug. 25, 2019. Following pilot training in Del Rio, Texas, he served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force at Pease Air Force Base, N.H.; Pope Air Force Base, N.C.; and Ching Chuan Kang Air Base in Taichung, Taiwan, during the Vietnam War, flying the C-130 Hercules.

Pignone returned to Orlando and began a career in commercial aviation in 1969, first for National Airlines, followed by Pan American Airlines and Delta Airlines; he was a member of the Airline Pilots Association. He retired from flying in 2003. Pignone was elected as a member of the Orange County School Board in the mid-1970s and served on the State of Florida Housing Finance Authority. He was also a founder of Commercial State Bank and owned a series of publishing ventures. Pignone was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

Gould retired from the U.S. Air Force after 26 years of service and enjoyed a second career in the private sector.

1964 William Francis Holman William F. Holman, of Tallahassee, Fla., died July 6, 2019. He received a master’s degree in business administration from Tulane University in 1966. Holman served in the U.S. Air Force at Patrick Air Force where he worked at Cape Canaveral in the space program. In 1969, he was a part of the Apollo 11 launch.

Holman resigned from the Air Force in 1972 and began working for Control Data Corporation as a computer programmer, where he worked until 1994. He then began working for the state of Florida as a programmer until his retirement when he began volunteering for WFSU radio as a reader. Holman was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

1965 William Carl Hinson III William C. Hinson III, of Charlotte, N.C., died Aug. 31, 2019. He was an Army aviator and served one year in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot.

Hinson earned a Bronze Star, a Distinguished Flying Cross and a Combat Infantry Badge, completing his military service with the rank of captain as an instructor pilot. He had a career

in the construction material and equipment industry.

1967 James Nelson Samples, Sr. James N. Samples, Sr., of Chesapeake, Va., died July 1, 2019. He served in the U.S. Army for three years and was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star with V for Valor. After returning home from Vietnam, Samples continued to

serve his country with the FBI. He was a special agent for 27 years and received commendations from every director of the FBI from J. Edgar Hoover to Louis Freeh.

1968 Eric Vaughn Cooper Eric V. Cooper, of Charleston, died May 31, 2019. He entered the U.S. Air Force, and upon completion of flight school, served in Vietnam as an O2 Birddog pilot, flying search and rescue, forward air control and aerial observation missions. Cooper was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross and ten Air Medals. He later flew F-4 Phantom fighters in Florida. Leaving the Air Force in 1976 as a captain, Cooper then flew commercially, was a stockbroker, owned and operated an aerial advertising business and several restaurants, was a land developer and had a commercial real estate business. After retirement he was active in the Red River Rats, an organization of pilots and air crew who had flown over North Vietnam. He was an accomplished sailor, having participated in some of the sport’s highest levels of competition, namely the Fastnet Race in the United Kingdom, several Transpac Races from Los Angeles to Hawaii and the ChicagoMackinac Race. Cooper was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

He is survived by two sons. Interment will be later at Arlington National Cemetery.

COL Guy E. (Ed) Howerton, Jr., USA, Ret., of Valrico, Fla., died Sept. 9, 2019. He was deployed to Vietnam with the U.S. Army Infantry.

Howerton earned a Combat Infantryman’s Badge, a Bronze Star, a Meritorious Service Medal (3rd award), an Army Commendation Medal and an Army Achievement Medal. After a 22-year military career, he worked with local organizations providing support to homeless veterans in the Tampa Bay area. Howerton was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife, Marsha Howerton, 310 Sand Ridge Drive, Valrico, Fla. 33594-4023; two sons, five grandchildren and his cousins.

1969 Jack Ryle Dearhart, Jr. Jack R. Dearhart, Jr., of Mount Pleasant, died Aug. 23, 2019. He earned a Master of Education degree with an emphasis in educational administration from the University of South Carolina. Dearhart served in the S.C. Army National Guard, retiring with more than 20 years of service. Employed by the Darlington County Schools from 1970 to 2001, he was a teacher, coach, transportation supervisor, assistant principal and principal.

After retirement, Dearhart served as a sales consultant with Premier Agendas in Bellingham, Wash., and School Specialty in Wisconsin. He was part of the team that refereed S.C. Independent School Association’s football and basketball games.

Dearhart served on the Darlington Mental Health Board and the board of the American Red Cross. Dearhart also served on the City of Darlington Recreation Board as member and chairman. For more than 30 years, Dearhart was a member of the First Baptist Church of Darlington where he served as a member of the communion committee and chairman of the church personnel committee. Dearhart was also a deacon and served as vice-chair of the deacons.

He was a member the Darlington Kiwanis Club until his move to Columbia in 2001 and was awarded the title of Distinguished President

by Kiwanis International. Dearhart was a life member of The Citadel Alumni Association.

During his 23 years in the military, Smoak served two tours in Germany and was deployed during Desert Shield. 1972 Philip Gordon Brimer Philip G. Brimer, of Hardy, Va., died Sept. 13, 2019. He earned the chartered life underwriter designation from the American College in 1981. He was co-founder and chairman of the Voluntary Employee Benefits Board.

Insurance Institute and received the Richard Ancy Pinnacle Award in 2003 and the Harlan Sher Member of the Year Award in 2006. He was inducted into the International Workplace Benefits Association Hall of Fame in 2013. He was a member of Eastlake Community Church.

Smith retired from the S.C. Department of Administration with almost 40 years of service.

Smith attended Shandon Baptist Church in Columbia prior to joining Riverland Hills Baptist Church in Irmo. He was a member of the Gideons and was a Military Ministries Bible class teacher and assistant at Fort Jackson.

He also spread the word of God overseas on mission trips to Romania and Nicaragua.

Woods served with both the 2nd Infantry Division at Joint Base Lewis McChord, Wash., and the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colo., before attending Airborne School. After completing Airborne School, he was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 509th Airborne Infantry, 4th Brigade and 25th Infantry Division. Woods served a deployment to Afghanistan with this unit and was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and an Army Commendation Medal with a C device.

Woods is survived by a daughter, his father, his mother, two step-siblings, a grandmother, a grandfather, an aunt, his uncles and his cousins.

College 1971 Ann Bruce Hough Ann B. Hough, of Hapswell, Maine, died Oct. 20, 2019. She taught at schools in Charleston and in Polk County, N.C., and owned the Orchard Inn in Saluda, N.C. Hough is survived by a sister, two daughters and three grandchildren.

1973 Dr. EttaLeah Coplon Bluestein Dr. EttaLeah C. Bluestein, of Sullivan’s Island, died Oct. 30, 2019. She practiced as a 68

board-certified ophthalmologist at Bluestein Custom Vision until her retirement in early 2019.

Bluestein is survived by her husband Nicky Bluestein, 2513 Atlantic Ave. Sullivan’s Island, S.C. 29482-9653; three sons, a sister and four grandchildren.

1977 Robert McMillan Koger, Jr. Robert M. Koger, Jr., of Tarpon Springs, Fla., died July 20, 2019. He served as a captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Vietnam War. Koger worked as a sales director with various consumer products firms, eventually retiring from Georgia Pacific paper products division.

Koger is survived by his wife Peggy Koger, 1546 Pointe Tarpon Blvd., Tarpon Springs, Fla. 34689-5887; three children, a brother, Philip C. Koger, CGC ’71, 100 Pierce St., Clearwater, Fla. 33756-5156; and two grandchildren.

1978 Margaret Canady Adkins Margaret C. Adkins, of Charleston, died Sept. 3, 2019. She taught at James Island High School.

Adkins is survived by a son, Warren Y. Adkins III, CGC ’01, 1017 Ballew Circle, Fairview, Tenn. 37062-7024; a daughter, a brother, Horace G. Canady, Jr., ’66, 316 Park Shore Drive E., Columbia, S.C. 29223-6021; a nephew, James B. Canady, ’06, 303 King St. Apt. 1H, Greensboro, N.C. 27406-1693; and two nieces.

1980 Ann LaRoche King Ann L. King, of Folly Beach, died August 19, 2019. She was a retired school teacher, having taught at Trident Academy for 10 years and James Island Charter High School for more than 22 years. She was the head of the Social Studies Department and a National Board certified teacher. She was a member of Saint James Church.

King is survived by her husband D. Philip King, P.O. Box 1408, Folly Beach, S.C. 294391408; two daughters, two sons, two brothers and 10 grandchildren.

1984 John Corbett Sizemore III John C. (Jack) Sizemore III, of Greenwood, died July 24, 2019. He taught at McCormick Elementary and St. Stephens

Elementary and later at Berkeley High School, leading the Berkeley tennis team to a 4A State Championship. Sizemore later became a real estate developer and a first responder. He was a member of Woodfields Baptist Church.

Sizemore is survived by his wife, Tara H. Sizemore, 108 Princess Court, Greenwood, S.C. 29646-8761; two sons, a daughter, a brother, two sisters and three grandchildren.

1985 Carlton Gregory Force Carlton G. Force, of Apopka, Fla., died Sept. 21, 2019. He retired in 1992 from Westvaco Pulp and Paper (WestRock) in Charleston after 26 years of service. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church.

Force is survived by his wife Rosalie G. Force, 1626 Frances Drive, Apopka, Fla. 327037824; four sons, six grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren.

2014 Kari Smith Tippens Kari S. Tippens, of Charleston, died Aug. 22, 2019. She was employed by the University of South Carolina Medical Center in Charleston.

Tippens is survived by her husband Adrian Tippens, 839 Duck Hawk Retreat, Charleston, S.C. 29412-9056; a son, her parents and two sisters.

This is your opportunity to designate a final caretaker of your cherished Citadel ring.

This program was established in response to numerous requests from families of deceased alumni who are searching for an appropriate use of this prized possession. It is presented to you as an option with the dignity and respect that accompanies decisions of this magnitude.

To participate, the wishes in your Last Will & Testament would include appropriate language to bequeath your Citadel ring to The Citadel Alumni Association for perpetual care.

In recognition of this act of philanthropy, a brick in the Alumni Courtyard at the Holliday Alumni Center would be engraved with your name and class year and placed in a special area designated for Band of Gold donors.

Additionally, you will receive a gift-in-kind notice for the value of the ring as established by our ring vendor representative. Please consult with your tax advisor for potential tax deductions.

The Citadel Alumni Association would use these special rings for a variety of projects that would always respect the dignity of your generous gift. Currently, gold from select rings is included in

the crafting of the current senior class rings… in essence creating a “Long Gold Line.”

All chairs and lamps are all solid hardrock maple hardwood which has been kiln-dried. No veneers or other woods are used. They are painstakingly constructed and assembled and are hand-sanded, stained and lacquered. All lamp accents are in solid brass. Hand painted gold beading adds a classic finishing touch to the chairs. Throughout the manufacturing process, inspectors judge every piece.
