At the Citadel Theatre, we believe in the power and importance of stories. We acknowledge the stories that have come before us since time immemorial - on this land just north of the river and under these skies and stars, on this stage, and in this building with you. We live, work, and create in the place we share on Mother Earth. This area, Edmonton, is known to the Plains Cree as Amiskwaciwâskahikan - Beaver Hill House. It is the traditional and contemporary homeland for the Nehiyawak (Plains Cree) along with the Saulteaux (Plains Ojibwe), Stoney Nakoda, Haudenosaunee (Mohawk), Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), Inuit, Dene and Métis. DIRECTOR’S NOTES It is not surprising that Agatha Christie’s iconic novel, Murder on the Orient Express has enjoyed so many film adaptations. We can’t help but be seduced by the sumptuous world of 1930s art deco, or the glamourous array of characters who’ve come aboard the world’s most luxurious train. We are irresistibly drawn into the author’s magnificent puzzle and to the eccentric Belgian detective who must solve this intriguing mystery. Simply put the world that Agatha Christie has conceived is delicious. But theatre is a different beast than film. What the camera can do in storytelling is vastly different than how a playwright must tackle the same material. Happily, we are in the masterful hands of Ken Ludwig, whose sharp wit, theatrical energy and sudden gripping terror has lifted Christie’s brilliant novel off the page and evolved it into a heart racing whodunnit for a live audience. As the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot weighs the evidence, deliciously dissecting each clue, we are enveloped in a world of suspense. But at the heart of Christie’s novel is a more existential crisis. The play examines the nature of justice, both as a principle of the legal system but also as a broader ethical ideal. What drew me so deeply to this story is its moral dilemma, where a man must confront everything he has known to be true, where his moral code comes face to face with the realization that the legal system is not infallible. Hercule has been described as a psychological detective, and indeed Orient Express is a powerful lesson in human behaviour, including his own. I salute this incredible team of players, who have worked tirelessly to capture the claustrophobic tension of a snowbound train, while letting Ken Ludwig’s fast-paced humour shine through. And to my designers who have created a stunning visual feast. Bringing this legendary train to life on our stage has been a thrilling ride. Our production saw its first iteration at Royal MTC in January of this year, and I am thrilled to now bring it to the Citadel Theatre, and to share it with Edmonton audiences. STUDENTS CLUB Young people are a vital part of the Citadel Theatre and we’re passionate about helping them find their creative voice. Students Club gives local junior and senior high school students an inside look at the world of professional theatre. It isn’t just about seeing shows - Students Club is about community, conversation, and celebrating live theatre in Edmonton. Before select Mainstage performances, students take part in an engaging and interactive session led by one of Edmonton’s talented theatre artists. Then, after the curtain falls, they stick around for a lively talkback with members of the cast and crew - diving into the stories behind the scenes and learning about what it really takes to bring a production to life. From Poirot’s Belgian accent to Ratchett’s American drawl, from Mary Debenham’s British pronunciation to Hildegarde Schmidt’s German intonation, the Orient Express hosts a myriad of multi-national characters aboard its fateful trip. Local vocal coach and director, Jennnifer Spencer, will take students though the process of researching, building and consistently performing authentic dialects and accents on stage- you won’t believe what the lips, the teeth and the tip of the tongue can do to make genuine sounding dialogue!

AGATHA CHRISTIE I Original Author Born in Torquay, England in 1890, Agatha Christie is the best-selling novelist of all time. With over one billion books sold in English and another billion in over 100 languages, she is outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare. She wrote 80 crime novels and collections of short stories, over 25 plays (including The Mousetrap, the world’s longest running play), and six novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, introduced the world to the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, followed a decade later by the shrewd and often-underestimated Miss Marple.
KEN LUDWIG I Stage Adaptation Ken Ludwig is an internationally acclaimed playwright who had six shows on Broadway and eight in the West End. He has won the Edwin Forrest Award, two Laurence Olivier Awards, two Helen Hayes Awards, the Charles MacArthur Award and the Edgar Award for Best Mystery of the Year. His plays include commissions from the Agatha Christie Estate, the Royal Shakespeare Co., The Old Globe Theatre and the Bristol Old Vic. His first play on Broadway, Lend Me A Tenor, won three Tony Awards and was nominated for nine. His best-known Broadway and West End shows include Crazy for You (five years on Broadway, Tony and Olivier Award Winner for Best Musical), Moon Over Buffalo, Leading Ladies, Twentieth Century, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Game’s Afoot, The Fox on the Fairway, Midsummer/Jersey, The Three Musketeers, Treasure Island and The Beaux’ Stratagem. His plays starred Alec Baldwin, Carol Burnett, Lynn Redgrave, Mickey Rooney, Hal Holbrook, Dixie Carter, Tony Shalhoub, Anne Heche, Joan Collins and Kristin Bell. He is a McCarter Theatre/ Sallie B.
