DEATH OF A SALESMAN I 3

WELCOME TO

THE CITADEL Our audience has always had a deep love for the classics. These stories invite us to reflect on our own lives and the world around us and each time we return to them, we discover something new. It feels especially meaningful to present Death of a Salesman in our 60th Anniversary Season. When the Citadel opened its doors in 1965, this play was part of our inaugural lineup and helped define the kind of theatre Edmonton could expect from us. We returned to it in the 1983/84 season and again in 2011/12, and each time audiences have connected deeply with its emotional power. Revisiting this play in 2026 allows us to honour that history while engaging in a fresh conversation about family, hope, responsibility, and the search for meaning. The relationship between Willy and Linda Loman remains one of the most poignant portraits of devotion and struggle in modern theatre. Their story continues to strike a chord with audiences who see reflections of their own families, pressures, and dreams in these characters. Death of a Salesman speaks with renewed clarity today as so many families navigate rising living costs, job insecurity, shifting work expectations, and the pressure to meet ever-changing definitions of success. Willy Loman’s struggle to hold onto stability and dignity feels especially familiar in a moment when many people are working harder than ever while wondering if the world is still making space@CITADELTHEATRE for them. @CITADELTHEATREYEG Bringing Death of a Salesman to life requires the dedication of an extraordinary group of artists, designers, technicians, collaborators, and arts workers. We are grateful for their creativity and their commitment to sharing powerful stories with our community. And we are grateful for you. Time after time, you show us how much these works matter and how important it is to hold space for them within our season.

Thank you for joining us. Your presence continues the legacy that began in 1965, and we are honoured to share this moment with you.

At the Citadel Theatre, we believe in the power and importance of stories. We acknowledge the stories that have come

before us since time immemorial - on this land just north of the river and under these skies and stars, on this stage, and in this building with you. We live, work, and create in the place we share on Mother Earth. This area, Edmonton, is known to the Plains Cree as Amiskwaciwâskahikan – Beaver Hill House. It is the traditional and contemporary homeland for the Nehiyawak (Plains Cree) along with the Saulteaux (Plains Ojibwe), Stoney Nakoda, Haudenosaunee (Mohawk), Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), Inuit, Dene and Métis. We express deep gratitude for the knowledge that has long nurtured these lands. Treaty No. 6 was created with the intention of fostering harmonious co-existence. The Citadel Theatre recognizes our role and responsibility in being an active participant in reconciliation. We commit to this work through the sharing of resources, ongoing training, the inclusion of Indigenous stories, histories, and experiences in our programming, and by fostering meaningful relationships with the community. In the spirit of reciprocity and respect, we seek to uphold the original intent of the Treaty and strive to create a shared narrative that honors our responsibility to this land and to each other. ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT Arthur Miller believed that plays could ask difficult questions about morality and responsibility and then challenge people to change their lives and the world. “The mission of the theater,” he said, “is… to raise the consciousness of people to their human possibilities.” Arthur Miller was born in New York City in 1915. By the time he was a teenager, his family like many others - was struggling through the Great Depression, which brought financial ruin onto his father, a small manufacturer, and demonstrated to the young Miller the insecurity of modern existence. After graduation from high school he worked in a warehouse. With the money he earned, he attended the University of Michigan (B.A., 1938), where he began to write plays. All My Sons, a drama about a manufacturer of faulty war materials that strongly reflects the influence of Henrik Ibsen, was his first important play. It won Miller a Tony Award, and it was his first major collaboration with the director Elia Kazan, who also won a Tony. Miller’s next play, Death of a Salesman, became one of the most famous American plays of its period. It is the tragedy of Willy Loman, a man destroyed by false values that are in large part the values of his society. For Miller, it was important to place “the common man” at the centre of a tragedy. As he wrote in 1949: “The quality in such plays [i.e., tragedies] that does shake us…derives from the underlying fear of being displaced, the disaster inherent in being torn away from our chosen image of what and who we are in this world. Among us today this fear is as strong, and perhaps stronger, than it ever was. In fact, it is the common man who knows this fear best.” Death of a Salesman opened in New York City, directed by Kazan, in February 1949. The play won a Tony Award for best play and a Pulitzer Prize for drama, while Miller and Kazan again each won individual Tonys, as author and director respectively. The play was later adapted for the screen (1951 and several made-for-television versions) and was revived several times on Broadway. Miller continued to write plays, articles, film scripts, books, and speeches throughout his life, exploring the great political, social, and moral questions of our time. Arthur Miller died in 2005 at age 89. He remains one of the most frequently produced playwrights. DEATH OF A SALESMAN I 9

STUDENTS CLUB Young people are a vital part of the Citadel Theatre and we’re passionate about helping them find their creative voice. Students Club gives local junior and senior high school students an inside look at the world of professional theatre. It isn’t just about seeing shows Students Club is about community, conversation, and celebrating live theatre in Edmonton. Before select mainstage performances, students take part in an engaging and interactive session led by one of Edmonton’s talented theatre artists. Then, after the curtain falls, they stick around for a lively talkback with members of the cast and crew – diving into the stories behind the scenes and learning about what it really takes to bring a production to life. It’s often said that “the show must go on,” but what happens when an actor can’t go on? Understudies, swings and standbys are some of the hardest working members of the cast, learning multiple roles and tracks to step in at a moment’s notice. Students will learn from Edmonton actors Braydon Dowler-Coltman and Andrés Moreno about understudying and the essential part these actors play in making performances happen. Braydon is an Edmonton-based actor, director, and dancer. He attended Simon Fraser University’s Contemporary Arts program and Seacoast Studios in Vancouver before returning home to Edmonton, graduating from the University of Alberta’s BFA acting program in 2014. He has also studied at the Banff/Citadel Professional Training Program and with Frantic Assembly in Los Angeles.

Andrés (they/them) is a Colombian actor, director, and producer thankful to live on Treaty 6 & 7. They are deeply inspired by creative collaboration and feel fortunate to continually learn from the artists they work alongside while sharing skills and knowledge in return. Their current work centers on strengthening reflectivity and agency for artists as a freelance director and producer with Azimuth Theatre and as Outreach Coordinator with Theatre Alberta.

DEATH OF A SALESMAN I 21

As we celebrate our 60 th Anniversary Season, we are proud to present a special feature in each program highlighting the rich history, unforgettable moments, and remarkable people who have shaped The Citadel Theatre.

CLASSIC THEATRE – THEN AND NOW As we celebrate our 60 th Anniversary Season, we are proud to present Death of a Salesman - a nod to our inaugural year in 1965, when the production was staged in our original home on 102 Avenue (now the Starlite Room) before an audience of just 277 seats. Today, the Shoctor Theatre seats 638 patrons, reflecting the remarkable growth of our audiences and our ongoing commitment to sharing timeless stories with the community. Revisiting classic plays is both a joy and an artistic challenge. These works have earned their place in theatre history, resonating across decades and centuries, but they also meet today’s audiences in a world that has changed dramatically since their creation. Cultural shifts, evolving social awareness, and new perspectives can make certain themes feel distant or out of step with modern life. Yet Death of a Salesman remains remarkably relevant, as its examination of family, identity, and the pursuit of the American dream still resonates deeply. This enduring relevance drives artists to re-examine classic material, uncovering new layers and new opportunities for connection. Whether presented in their original form or reimagined for contemporary times, classics remain a vital part of our storytelling landscape.

OUR HOME THROUGH THE YEARS As our repertoire has evolved, so too has The Citadel itself. What began in the former Salvation Army building on 102 Avenue has grown into the five-venue arts hub located in Edmonton’s Arts District. Our current location on 99 Street opened in 1976, and was designed by Barton Myers Associates (with Barton Myers, Jack Diamond and R.L. Wilkin), as a bold and precedent-setting vision for a regional performing arts centre in Canada. In 1984, the building expanded to include the Lee Pavilion, the Tucker Amphitheatre, and the Maclab Theatre. Over six decades, we have continued to refine our spaces with a focus on accessibility, technical innovation, and warm, welcoming public areas—ensuring that the building itself remains a classic: a space where community and creativity thrive.

ARTS DISTRICT DAY As part of our 60 th Anniversary celebrations, we invite you to join us for Arts District Day on March 14, 2026. With generous support from the Edmonton Arts Council and The City of Edmonton’s Downtown Vibrancy Fund, the event will transform the whole Arts District into a lively block party. Together with The Winspear Centre, the Art Gallery of Alberta, and local businesses, we welcome you to visit the downtown core for a family-friendly celebration of the arts.

PRODUCED IN ASSOCIATION WITH ALBERTA THEATRE PROJECTS (CALGARY)

Set in 1991 at Toronto’s Casey House, this moving story unfolds during the AIDS crisis, following residents and staff as they prepare for Princess Diana’s visit. Confronting fears, dreams, and a longing for connection, the drama balances humour and heartbreak while shining a light on humanity’s resilience and the transformative power of compassion.
