WELCOME TO THE CITADEL
Written in 1897, the story of Cyrano de Bergerac still resonates strongly with audiences today. The original play has been reinterpreted many times on stage and in film (who can forget Steve Martin’s 1987 film Roxanne?) It is a timeless story of an outsider with a poet’s heart, longing for something unattainable.
The Citadel commissioned Edmonton playwright Jessy Ardern to do her own adaptation of this beloved story. Jessy has done an incredible job maintaining the rhyming verse structure that makes the original play so distinctive, while also bringing her own fresh, fun, contemporary sensibility to the story. The result is a version that honours the heart and spirit of the original while feeling playful, immediate, and deeply human for today’s audiences.

This production is also a wonderful example of collaboration within the Canadian theatre community. It has been created in partnership with Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and The Grand Theatre. After the run at the Citadel, the production will travel to Winnipeg and London, Ontario to perform at both theatres. It’s thrilling to see a Citadel production, written by an Edmonton playwright, have this kind of national impact. And the best part is that you get to experience it first, right here in Edmonton.

At the Citadel Theatre, we believe in the power and importance of stories. We acknowledge the stories that have come before us since time immemorial - on this land just north of the river and under these skies and stars, on this stage, and in this building with you.
We live, work, and create in the place we share on Mother Earth. This area, Edmonton, is known to the Plains Cree as Amiskwaciwâskahikan - Beaver Hill House. It is the traditional and contemporary homeland for the Nehiyawak (Plains Cree) along with the Saulteaux (Plains Ojibwe), Stoney Nakoda, Haudenosaunee (Mohawk), Niitsitapi (Blackfoot), Inuit, Dene and Métis. We express deep gratitude for the knowledge that has long nurtured these lands.
Treaty No. 6 was created with the intention of fostering harmonious co-existence. The Citadel Theatre recognizes our role and responsibility in being an active participant in reconciliation. PLAYWRIGHT NOTES
I thought I knew who Cyrano de Bergerac was.
After all, I had grown up with Steve Martin in Roxanne, and then I had Gérard Depardieu and José Ferrer and Kevin Kline. Like many of you, I could easily describe the man we all know Cyrano to be: he has a long nose, sure, but he’s also dashing and unruffled under pressure, ruthless with a comeback but always unshakeably cool.
Then I read Rostand’s play - the uncut, 5-hour play - and I fell in love with a character I had never met before.
I met a ferociously funny, terrifyingly self-destructive man who was younger than I had ever imagined (21 for the bulk of the story), whose defining characteristic is a consuming, unshakeable rage: at hypocrisy, at classism, at the barest hint of moral compromise. As characters repeatedly cautioned Cyrano to cool his jets, it occurred to me that his jets should probably be a little less cool than is usually depicted. That is not to suggest that the adaptation I’ve crafted is “truer” than others. I’ve kept the rhymes but nixed the couplets, and I’ll cheerfully confess that most of the female characters are my own (I have lots of respect for Rostand, but very little patience for his women). I owe many thanks to the translators and adaptors whose shoulders I clambered on: Gladys Thomas, Mary F. Guillemard, Brian Hooker, and Anthony Burgess, among others. I also owe a tip of the hat to Martin Crimp who, I was annoyed to discover, thought to incorporate the real-life Cyrano’s writing into the play before I did.
Speaking of debts: a thousand thank-yous to Amanda Goldberg for bringing her generous heart to this process. Thanks also to Daryl, Mieko, Jessie, Bridget, and everyone at the Citadel. It’s a rare privilege to be gifted with a commission at a regional theatre. It is even rarer to be granted enough trust to contradict the popular image of Cyrano and bring this fanciful, furious stranger to the stage.

STUDENTS CLUB
Young people are a vital part of the Citadel Theatre and we’re passionate about helping them find their creative voice. Students Club gives local junior and senior high school students an inside look at the world of professional theatre. It isn’t just about seeing showsStudents Club is about community, conversation, and celebrating live theatre in Edmonton. Before select Mainstage performances, students take part in an engaging and interactive session led by one of Edmonton’s talented theatre artists. Then, after the curtain falls, they stick around for a lively talkback with members of the cast and crew – diving into the stories behind the scenes and learning about what it really takes to bring a production to life.
To celebrate this exciting commission by a local playwright, Students Club participants will be treated to an exclusive pre-show chat with our production’s playwright, Jessy Ardern. Students will learn about Jessy’s creative process in reimagining this classic text and hear about the script’s transformation from its first draft to the fully realized story that will animate stages across Canada.
Jessy Ardern specializes in adaptation as well as highly interactive work. Her writing has been seen onstage in Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Toronto, and Edmonton, where she has won two Sterling Awards for her work as a playwright. Selected writing credits include Prophecy; The Fall of the House of Atreus: A Cowboy Love Song; Harold & Vivian Entertain Guests; and Queen Lear is Dead. Jessy was the winner of the 2024 Alberta Playwriting Competition for her adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion. When she is not writing, Jessy is an actor as well as an artistic producer with interactive indie company The Fox Den Collective.

As we celebrate our 60 th Anniversary Season, we are proud to present a special feature in each program highlighting the rich history, unforgettable moments, and remarkable people who have shaped The Citadel Theatre.
FROM PAGE TO STAGE
For more than a decade, the Citadel Theatre has been a driving force in developing new dramatic work locally and internationally. With 33 world premieres to date, 16 of which have gone on to productions across Canada and beyond, these projects have carried the spirit of Edmonton far outside our city. At its heart is a commitment to innovation and to bringing largescale ideas to life.
Grounded in inclusivity, the Citadel champions a wide range of voices with a particular emphasis on uplifting Edmonton-based artists alongside creators from across the globe. In 2023, the company reached a new apex with three productions developed with Citadel involvement, SIX: The Musical, Hadestown, and Peter Pan Goes Wrong, simultaneously appearing on Broadway. A remarkable testament to the reach of this work.
From new commissions to reimagined classics, play development remains central to the Citadel’s identity: a space where stories are nurtured, tested, and shared with audiences near and far.
BOLD IDEAS, SHARED STAGES
The Citadel’s commitment to development spans ambitious and uniquely Canadian projects, such as Belinda Cornish’s adaptation of Todd Babiak’s Edmonton-based novel, The Garneau Block, and You Don’t Know Jack, by Andrea Scott, which tells the story of Jackie Robinson’s years playing baseball in Montreal.
Some projects have pushed the boundaries of theatre-making. The Candidate and The Party, both written by Kat Sandler, unfolded simultaneously in two theatres, with actors moving between spaces in real time. An inventive use of the Citadel’s
architecture and a truly one-of-a-kind audience experience. This season, two major productions developed by the Citadel take centre stage: Vinyl Cafe: The Musical which will be seen in a sparkling second production in a large Canadian city soon to be announced, and Cyrano de Bergerac, adapted by Edmonton’s Jessy Ardern, a tri-production with Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre in Winnipeg and The Grand Theatre in London, Ontario. Both highlight the potential of this new Citadel work to resonate across the country.
WHERE NEW STORIES BEGIN
At the core of this creative journey is the Collider Festival: the Citadel’s annual festival of new Canadian plays. Each year, Collider brings together artists and audiences to experience readings of new works written for large theatres, alongside playwriting panels and workshops. With the generous support of TD Bank Group, Play Development at the Citadel continues to create opportunities for these stories to grow and connect. Many productions that first found their voice at Collider have gone on to be programmed at the Citadel and beyond, including Almost a Full Moon by Charlotte Corbeil-Coleman and Hawksley Workman, Heist by Arun Lakra and Burning Mom by Mieko Ouchi. This year’s Festival from June 5-7, 2026, will feature readings of new plays developed through the Citadel’s Playwrights Lab, along with a new commission offering a glimpse into our next wave of storytelling.
Through support from The City of Edmonton’s Downtown Vibrancy Fund, we have shared the stories behind the stories throughout our 60 th Anniversary Season. As we look ahead, all our Play Development initiatives remain vital to who we are: a gathering place for artists and audiences, and a home for stories at the very start of their journey.

The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre (Royal MTC) is proud to partner with The Citadel Theatre and Grand Theatre on this production of Cyrano de Bergerac!
Royal MTC exists to celebrate the widest spectrum of theatre art. Deeply rooted in the province of Manitoba, which gave it life and provides for its growth, Royal MTC aspires to both reflect and inform the community it serves.
Royal MTC was Canada’s first English language regional theatre, created when two Winnipeg theatre companies merged in 1958 under Artistic Director John Hirsch and General Manager Tom Hendry. Their goal was to produce great theatre with mass appeal. Royal MTC became a model for regional theatres throughout North America, and received a royal designation from Queen Elizabeth II in 2010. Over 65 years later, we remain Manitoba’s flagship theatre.
The Grand Theatre is proud to partner with the Citadel Theatre on this production of Cyrano de Bergerac.
Since 1901, the Grand has been the place to gather where world class theatre thrives, serving over 100,000 audience members in southwestern Ontario every year.
