his scriptural passage is not only our theme for the current school year; it also serves as a fitting introduction to this fall’s Continuum. Our feature article highlights the wonderful ways our alumni (and alum parents!) are generously reaching back out to the School to provide ongoing mentoring, guidance, and even valuable Fr. Paul McCormick internship and research opportunities for their “little brothers.” And, as you will see, the relationships forged through these shared experiences truly last a lifetime!

News & Notes New Faces on Campus

Br. Michael Kattady ’20, born in Thrissur, India, immigrated to the United States with his family only six months later. His family eventually moved to Plano, where he attended St. Mark’s the Evangelist Catholic School before joining Cistercian in Form IV. He attended Columbia University, graduating with a BA Br. Michael Kattady ’20 in economics-philosophy. It was there, aided and inspired by the guidance and examples of his college chaplains and the fraternal encouragement of a motley crew of self-styled ‘Crusaders,’ that Br. Michael discerned a call to the monastic life. After various retreats at Cistercian, receiving wisdom from his Form Master Fr. Philip Lastimosa ’00, and many long conversations with classmate Br. Charbel Salhab ’20, Br. Michael entered the monastery at the age of 22 on August 20, 2024. Br. Michael currently teaches Form II Religion and co-sponsors community service. “It’s a humbling experience to be on the other side of the classroom now; to join the ranks of great Cistercian faculty who had a profound impact on me when I was a student here and to strive to live up to their example.”

Br. Charbel Salhab ’20 was born and raised in Dallas. He attended St. Monica Catholic School through fourth grade and then Cistercian for all eight years. Fr. Philip Lastimosa ’00 is his beloved, not sufficiently appreciated, and very sleepy Form Master. After four years at Texas A&M University and many laboratory explosions, Br. Charbel graduated with a BA in chemistry. He then Br. Charbel Salhab ’20 joined Our Lady of Dallas Cistercian Monastery in August 2024 and teaches Form I Religion at the School. “I guess it’s alright,” commented Br. Charbel with a grin when asked about the School and community that he has been a part of for half his life.

Colton Rosseau joined our coaching staff in June as the director of strength and conditioning and assistant football coach. Born and raised in Abilene, he graduated Abilene Christian University in 2018 and went on to earn a master’s degree in kinesiology at HardinSimmons University. Coming to us from Oral Roberts University, this Colton Rosseau marks his tenth year of coaching at the high school and collegiate levels. “I’m very grateful for how welcoming the Cistercian community has been, and I look

forward to continuing to see Hawk athletes grow as young men and competitors,” said Rosseau.

Br. Jerome Clark was born and raised near Los Angeles, California.

He studied electrical engineering at UCLA. While there, he converted to Catholicism and was baptized at the UCLA Newman Center in 2010.

“As I began to grow in my faith, I felt God calling me to something more,” said Br. Jerome. After graduating in 2012, he worked at the UCLA Newman Center while he continued Br. Jerome Clark to discern his vocation. After some time in St. Michael’s Norbertine Abbey near Los Angeles, he joined Our Lady of Dallas in August 2024 and took first vows the following year. Br. Jerome teaches Form III Latin.

Jennifer Lindsey is Cistercian’s new business manager. Along with a BBA from the University of Texas at Arlington, she brings considerable knowledge and experience gained in her previous roles as business manager for St. Maria Goretti and then director of operations for St. Ann Catholic Parish. She and her husband Craig have two grown children and were married by Fr. Jennifer Lindsey Gregory back in his St. Maria Goretti days! “I started in July when the School was empty. The boys bring so much life and energy to the space. I would love for school to be year-round just for the energy they create,” remarked Mrs. Lindsey.

Karime Naime, our new co-director of college counseling, joins Chris Blackwell in guiding and accompanying students through the college application and admissions process. Originally from Texas but raised in Acapulco, Mexico, Ms. Naime returned last summer to DFW with her six-year-old son. “I cannot think of a better place to Karime Naime be; being at Cistercian has been a blessing in itself. I always had a phenomenal impression of the boys from my years in college admissions,” she said.

A native Spanish speaker, she was most recently Director of College Preparedness Programs for the D.C. Public Schools.

Prior to that time, she spent 15 years in higher education in the admission offices of George Washington University, the University of Rochester, and The University of Texas at Austin.

She brings a depth of experience in college preparedness and success.

Cistercian Hope Squad welcomes therapy dogs

In its inaugural year, the Hope Squad hit a home run with their stress-relief initiative when they invited therapy dogs and their handlers to visit Cistercian the week before finals. Students and faculty were all smiles as the furry four-legged visitors made their way through the School.

Led by advisors Dr. Renee Phillips, Mr. J. P. Walsh, and Fr. Raphael Schaner, Hope Squad is a peer-to-peer youth suicide prevention program founded in 2004 by high school principal Dr. Gregory Hudnall, following several student suicides. By creating a school culture of connectedness and empathy, Hope Squad aims to reduce the stigma associated with mental health and prevent mental health crises. Members are nominated by their peers and trained with a specific curriculum, not only on the risk factors and warning signs of suicide, but also on topics such as resiliency, self-care, and healthy relationships. Dr. Phillips said, “One of our goals is to help students normalize discussions about mental health and learn skills they will use throughout their lives to help others.”

Cistercian alumnus to receive award

Jim Moroney ’74 will be honored on February 7, 2026, at the 43rd annual Catholic Foundation Award Dinner at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas. Working as both an influencer and fundraiser, Jim is being recognized for his dramatic impact on multiple organizations and the people they serve, most notably the Institute for Homiletics, Cistercian Preparatory School, and Young Catholic Professionals. “I was given a lot by my parents, Cistercian and God,” he said. “I could work every day until I die and not give back what they have given to me.” We anticipate a strong Jim Moroney ’74 Cistercian presence that evening!

Texas High School Soccer Coach of the Year!

The United Soccer Coaches Association has recognized Mr. J. P. Walsh as the 2025 United Soccer Coaches High School Boys Coach of the Year for Texas!

He is now in the running for Regional Coach and National Coach of the Year to be announced in late December. “So happy for Coach Walsh to get this recognition,” J. P. Walsh said veteran retired teacher and Form Master Tom Pruit. “He’s an inspiration for me—and a major reason so many of his players grow up to be confident leaders and positive role models.”

Novices make profession of vows

In an overflowing abbey church in August, a record six novices (including young alums Br. Michael ’20 and Br. Charbel ’20) took their temporary vows, and Br. Barnabas Robertson renewed his vows for another three years. Not long after, three new novices, including alum Br. David Andrews ’21, joined the monastery for an initial year of discernment. These are joyful occasions for the abbey and the whole Cistercian community!

News & Notes Focusing on the whole child

As part of Cistercian’s ongoing professional development, Dr. Betsy Kennard, PsyD, professor of psychiatry at UT Southwestern and program director for the Suicide Prevention and Resilience Program at Children’s Health, was invited to campus to start the 2025-26 school year by speaking with faculty and staff. Dr. Kennard discussed prominent sources of stress for teens, how depression and anxiety impact school and family life, and how teachers can recognize and help struggling students. In February, neuropsychologist Dr. Alice Ann Holland will present to faculty on the impact of sleep on memory, learning, and overall emotional health. As part of our annual presentations for students, alums Dr. Patrick Butler, M.D. ’08 (child and adolescent psychiatry) and Dr. Steve Spurgin, M.D. ’06 (pediatric cardiologist at Children’s Health) will address upper school students in February about current trends and dangers of adolescent substance use. Also in February, nationally acclaimed speaker Jason Evert with The Chastity Project will return with a presentation on the important topics of dating, relationships, and purity.

Two courses added to curriculum

Long a desire in the science department, groundwork was laid in 2025 for Environmental Science as a fourth science option (in addition to Biology II, Chemistry II, and Physics II) for seniors starting this fall. The course is being taught in collaboration with the Trinity Park Conservancy. New this year from the athletic department is a Sports Journalism elective which gives students experience in producing content for social media and the monitors around campus. The class also produces a weekly newsletter complete with recaps of competitions from the previous week, photos, and stats that is delivered to faculty, students, and Booster Club members.

Quiz Bowl News

The Upper School Quiz Bowl team competed in their first tournament of the year in Shreveport. Team A, composed of Drew Durgin ’26, Dhruv Gohel ’28, Roman Jeffery ’28 and Andrew Kosel ’28, finished third, narrowly losing by a single question to the second-place team. Team A qualified for both national tournaments. Kosel and Joe Schulz ’26 both received individual awards, third and fourth respectively. At the first Middle School tournament of the year, Cistercian A (Nico Espinoza ’30, Brooks Griffith ’30, Robert Orchard ’30, and Liam Pepin ’31) finished third with Cistercian C (Henry Junker ’31, Nico Ledesma ’30, Rayaan Mudgil ’31, and Anthony Nguyen ’30) right behind and tied for fourth. Both teams qualified for the National MS Championship in Chicago.

Hungarian exchange students

Now in its ninth year, our Hungarian exchange program allowed Josh Hays ’25 and George Saliga ’25 to spend a month in Hungary after their graduation before heading to college.

Cistercian, in turn, hosted two top students from Szent Imre Cistercian high school in Budapest in the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year. Welcomed by the senior class and staying with senior families, Ágoston Ullrich and Marcell Vasi made a huge impact with their congenial enthusiasm for all things Cistercian and Texas!

Josh Hays ’25 and George Saliga ’25 in Hungary

Summer Adventures in Upper School Henry Horvat ’26 and James Marlowe’26 completed a language program abroad in Paris, France. Combining academic coursework and activities designed to deepen an understanding of French language and culture, the experience was further enhanced by a homestay, which allowed them to live with a local family and fully engage in everyday Paris with Madame Obels-Robinson Parisian life. While in Paris, the pair met with Madame ObelsRobinson for an afternoon on the Île de la Cité. Together they visited La Conciergerie and enjoyed refreshments on a café’s terrace near Notre-Dame de Paris, sampling the famous Berthillon ice cream on a particularly warm day. Both students are continuing their French studies by taking the French Senior Seminar.

With a hearty group of upper school students, Fr. Augustine Hoelke ’00, Fr. Raphael Schaner, and Brandon Mills spent six days living and working in Costa Rica. The boys divided into Rising seniors on Costa Rica Mission Trip different groups each day, doing home visits to meet and pray with the local people, helping with improvement projects at dependent community chapels (e.g. pouring concrete sidewalks, painting school buildings), and experiencing cultural programs and Mass with the locals.

“The boys worked hard, learned a lot, and spread the Gospel through their words in both English and Spanish and through their joyful faces and the generous spirit with which they threw themselves into their daily tasks,” said Fr. Augustine.

from his Class of 2028 for five days of hiking and one day of rock climbing in New Mexico with COR Expeditions. Many COR guides assisted in the adventure, including Christopher Novinski ’17.

Fr. Ambrose Strong led 25 students in his Class of 2027 on a father-son hiking trip to Taos, New Mexico.

The group enjoyed a variety of challenging and rewarding activities—white water rafting, hiking, formative talks from the dads—culminating with Mass on top Rising juniors hiking in New Mexico of Wheeler Peak.

Eighteen students participated in a spiritually enriching weekend experience for 3,000 young people at the Steubenville Lone Star Youth Conference. Nico Walz ’20 and Michael Jaquez ’18 chaperoned the group.

Last winter, Marcos Barruti and Mati Catardo ventured to the Metroplex from Argentina to stay with William Thomas ’27 and Devin DeSilva ’27, respectively, as part of a student exchange program. In turn, Thomas and DeSilva traveled to Argentina for a month in June and were hosted by the families of Marcos and Mati. They visited sites, watched rugby tournaments, and spent time with their host families.

Both boys agreed that the food was incredible, and they returned with more confidence, understanding, and accuracy in speaking Spanish!

Steamroller Smackdown

Cistercian’s thriving Art Club spent a Saturday in October at Parish Episcopal School’s Print Fest, also known as “Steamroller Smackdown,” an annual event where students create large-scale prints using an actual steamroller. In the two months leading up to the event, each participating school designed and carved a 3’ x 3’ linoleum block with the theme “Press and Play,” drawing inspiration from the DFW music scene, past or present. Art Club sponsor Ms. Clare Frank led students as they “steamrolled” and added finishing touches to their work.

For the second year in a row, the Student Council hosted a wildly successful “Pack the Stands” Night to support and honor our middle school football and crosscountry teams.

It was a great way to gather the Cistercian community to create an exciting atmosphere for the October 2 Good Shepherd football game while encouraging the middle school athletes to continue athletics into upper school. With the help of volunteer parents in the concession stand, guests were served free hot dogs and burgers!

When Jacob Liu ’26 showed up for his first day at Venture Metals this past summer, he didn’t expect to spend his time talking with engineers, coordinating across business departments, and helping resolve a bottleneck that had stalled a companywide project. He also didn’t expect that his mentor, Michael Uhrick ’14, had once stood where he stood, learning business lessons as a student working summers in the very same scrapyard.

Cistercian Alumni Lead the Way in Career Readiness

What brought the two together wasn’t a job board or a cold email—it was Cistercian.

Last summer, students like Liu stepped into realworld internships with alumni and school-connected professionals through a growing effort known as the Cistercian Internship Initiative. Born from a series of alumni-led classroom electives that sparked deeper professional conversations, this initiative has transformed into a living bridge between generations of Hawks, connecting the School’s deep tradition of intensive intellectual and personal formation with a dynamic approach to preparing students for life beyond the classroom.

And at the center of it all: a desire to give back by paying it forward.

The idea was simple: invite alumni working in law and finance to campus to provide basic, initial exposure to their areas of expertise, explain their area of practice and what they do on a daily basis, and illuminate different paths others have taken to go into the field. The experience would also create a natural bond between alumni and students who often shared the same teachers.

An Internship Initiative is born

S

eeing the momentum, Fr. Paul McCormick as headmaster teamed up with Mark Roppolo ’88 and Juan Muldoon ’05 to formalize the growing network of alumni willing to provide mentorship, particularly those who could offer summer internships.

“More and more, rising high school and college students are expected to have internships,” Roppolo said. “For those who are motivated, it can be an invaluable tool to understand and explore what’s important to them for a future career.”

“Our alumni are incredibly accomplished and deeply loyal to the School,” said Fr. Paul. “We saw an opportunity to harness that in a way that tangibly

benefits our students.”

Roppolo created a survey for alumni with questions about their area of expertise, degrees earned, current employer and title, and if they would be willing to serve in some capacity as a mentor to Cistercian students. With a sizable response, Muldoon fashioned the database to easily filter by industry and availability. Fr. Paul then followed up with alumni and alumni parents who were interested in offering internships to understand what they had in mind and how a student might be able to help.

“In addition to the students, we wanted to make sure it would also be a good experience for the alumni opening the door, making sure the students who worked for them would be prepared and provide value,” stated Muldoon.

The next step was discovering which students were interested in these opportunities and then preparing them as applicants. Chris Blackwell, Co-director of College Counseling, conducted an interest survey to see which students were motivated to pursue an internship based on the job descriptions provided. He

also invited seniors who had worked over the previous summer to speak to younger classmates about their experiences and provide context. “I wanted to make sure students knew what they’d be getting into and that this wasn’t simply a handout for anyone who raised their hand; it was an opportunity and privilege for those most motivated to take advantage of it.”

After instructing the junior class to create a college resume and understand its potential use for a summer job, Blackwell taught students how to prepare for and conduct themselves in job interviews. “But presenting this information could only go so far,” said Blackwell.

“They needed to put it into practice.”

To that end, Muldoon and Roppolo stepped in and quickly assembled a group of alumni from across decades to conduct mock interviews on a Saturday morning. Students received feedback from alums who had once been in their shoes and were genuinely interested in helping them succeed. They became increasingly more confident in their abilities as they interviewed with multiple alums who both complimented and critiqued their physical and verbal presentations. Following these interviews, students were connected with internship providers to present themselves as interested and worthy candidates for available opportunities.

Internships that make an impact

or us, it’s been a home run,” said Travis Springer ’08, president of Sagiss, a managed I.T. services company. The company had previously hired Cistercian students like Julius Andrews ’22, Dominic Micheli ’15, and Vincent Micheli ’23 for summer work.

This year, Gerardo Pozo ’26 brought his background in robotics and coding to the internship to learn the fundamentals of cybersecurity while Rishabh Rengarajan ’25 honed his computer science skills.

“Cistercian guys are smart, they’ve got a great work ethic, and they’re polite,” he said. “I love their aptitude and the energy they bring.

They’re asking for more work, excited to put effort into things—even after hours!” Last summer, Will Brittian ’24 and Dhruva Kumar ’25, without prior experience, were able to learn SQL databases and navigate Microsoft’s Power BI in a matter of days in order to display support ticket data on TV wallboards for the service technician team. “And then they came in the next day asking ’What else can I do?’”

In high school, Springer had an internship with an engineering firm and learned that he did not want to be an engineer. “And if they get through the summer and realize they hate I.T. and cybersecurity and never want to do it again, learning this lesson at 17 is tremendously valuable.”

or Liu, his internship wasn’t just an inside look at industry—it was a chance to make a real contribution and be mentored by a professional.

Working with Uhrick at Venture Metals, a company that sells alloy metals for recycling and remelting,

Liu learned the business from every angle: walking the yard to understand collection, consulting with an engineer about machinery processes, and working in Excel to help a stalled internal project move forward by taking on the time-intensive task of data gathering and organization. “I got to touch every part of the company,” Liu said. “It gave me a better sense of how a business actually works—and where I might fit in.”

An added benefit was the mentor relationship he formed with Uhrick. At lunch every other week, the pair discussed considerations for college, career prospects for a given major, and what matters in getting a job.

“These were conversations I wish I was having before going into college,” said Uhrick.

eal estate was another industry highlighted by two internships offered at CESM Real Estate where Taylor Stone, father of Colin Stone+ (Class of 2013), serves as president. He was able to offer two separate one-month internships where students could participate in site visits, market analysis, property management, and even engineering and construction meetings, gaining valuable insight into real estate development and property assessment. Stone knows that Cistercian prepares students to think critically and solve problems, and he was not disappointed when Jack Landis ’26 and Matthew George ’26 delivered.

“I remember being told what to find, but not how to find it,” recounts George. For one project, he retrieved tax, zoning, traffic, and utilities data for a plot of land and incorporated his findings into a report which he presented to the team. For another, he contacted competing apartment complexes to gather comprehensive fee information, which he analyzed to provide recommendations regarding amenities fees and bulk internet services.

“These guys were committed to understanding the broader scope of our business,” Stone said, “and their contributions were incredibly additive to our team’s success.”

Meg Squiers, who helped the Class of 2025 with their admissions process and whose son, Will Squiers ’12, graduated with Martín, asked Investar to consider taking one intern. However, recognizing the increasing importance for young graduates to have real-world professional experiences, Investar decided to offer three internships: one in its private equity investments platform for a student interested in finance, one in its healthcare business for a student interested in medicine, and another in its quick-service restaurant business for a student interested in data analytics and operations.

Jere Thompson ’74 leads discussion

Martina Kroll, Wilcox developed skills not just in engineering, but in writing grants, crafting narratives, and rallying community support. These early influences laid the groundwork for what would become the Birmingham Robotics Initiative, a nonprofit he launched while studying biomedical engineering in college. There, he brought together three high schools to create their own FIRST Robotics teams, spending up to 40 hours a week teaching classes, mentoring students, and helping young teams find their footing, much like he once had with his mentors at Cistercian.

His passion for combining engineering with impact

led Wilcox to apply to graduate schools where he initially planned to pursue a PhD in biomedical engineering. But when he noticed an option to specialize in robotics within one BME program, something clicked. Recruited by a robotics professor, Wilcox recalled the joy and energy he’d found in his early robotics experiences. That memory helped guide his decision to integrate robotics into his graduate work, bringing his journey full circle.

As a PhD candidate at Georgia Tech, Wilcox found himself still wanting to be involved in mentorship and considered helping local FIRST teams. But remembering what the specific Cistercian experience had meant for him, he asked himself why he would learn another school’s culture and philosophy when Cistercian’s was already so present for him. “Now I can come back to augment and support that experience for current students—and even improve it—to have the impact that mentors had on me.”

Now a remote mentor for the Cistercian robotics team, his story is a testament to the ripple effects of mentorship, the power of passion, and the enduring spirit of Cistercian alumni who give generously of their time and talents. “My experience in robotics had

such an impact on me; I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to help others,” said Wilcox.

Perhaps the most powerful part of the internship program is this sense of full-circle connection.

For students, the message is clear: don’t wait until college or a job interview to start thinking seriously about your future. “With this initiative, the journey begins in Upper School. In a conversation after class, in a discussion at a sporting event, in a summer spent learning. We want students to enjoy exploring,” said Blackwell.

s the Internship Initiative continues to grow, the School’s vision is to expand opportunities across more industries: affording more students the opportunity to have an internship experience, deepening the curriculum of alumni-led electives, and providing even earlier access to career conversations for students.

With Ms. Karime Naime joining Chris Blackwell as Co-director of College Counseling, they are planning the first “Career Day” event for Upper School in January. Alumni will be invited to campus to offer

practical advice about different fields—skills to learn now, potential college majors, and the industry outlook for certain professions.

The goal is simple: to help form young men not only in knowledge, but in confidence, vocation, and virtue, specifically through the guidance of those who have walked the same halls and now lead in the wider world. And in doing so, the School fosters something far greater than any internship—a culture of mentorship, gratitude, and lifelong formation.

his year’s Annual Report offers a list of all those who have shared their financial resources during the 2024-2025 school year to generously support the mission of the Cistercian Preparatory School and Abbey. On behalf of all our students, monks, faculty, coaches, and staff, please join me in gratitude for each individual, family, and organization included in the following pages.

Sustentation Drive

The 2024-2025 Sustentation Drive raised more than $827,000. The annual Sustentation Drive typically funds those inevitable, one-time capital costs of maintaining and enhancing our facilities. Last year, these funds paid for resurfacing the track, purchasing new tarps for the gyms, upgrading the lunchroom AV system, purchasing new copiers, and fulfilling our annual computer replacement schedule, among other needs. As important as the total amount raised, however, is the 99% level of participation among current parents which manifests the tremendous support and loyalty we enjoy year after year from our Cistercian families. We thank you and all our alumni parents and grandparents for this ongoing

commitment to the School. Our sincere appreciation also extends to the tremendous leadership of last year’s Sustentation Chair, Lucy Brittian, and the Form Captains (Form VIII to Form I): David Folmnsbee, Michael Brittian, Mike Wang ’93, Gustavo Barbero ’93, Tom Ivory, Wyatt Maxwell ’00, Harry Lake, and Jim Mueller.

Alongside the Sustentation Drive, alumni parents and friends also contributed more than $443,000 to the Monastic Fund for the Abbey. The Monastic Fund helps defray Abbey costs, including educational expenses for our young monks and rising healthcare costs for our elderly monks, whose lifelong dedication to the Abbey and School warrants the very best care.

Alumni Scholarship Drive

The alumni continue to look out for the needs of current and future students by having contributed over $289,000 last year to the 2024-2025 Alumni Scholarship Drive, with 26% of our alumni participating.

These funds are entirely dedicated to scholarships, providing the resources to help ensure a Cistercian education for every promising young man admitted regardless of socioeconomic background.

By working for below-market salaries in 2024–25, the Cistercians contributed $945 per student, or 3.0 percent of revenue.

In the spring of 2022, Cistercian launched a capital campaign entitled Formation Beyond the Classroom: Enkindling Character and Leadership through Athletics, the Arts, Technology, and Faith. We greatly appreciate the leadership of Campaign Chairs Sarah & Russell Weinberg and Christine & Matthew Nevitt ’97, along with their fellow steering committee members Tyler Bethea ’03, Charles Lipscomb ’84, Natalie & Jeff Lockhart ’93, and Peter Thompson ’13. Since capital campaigns run over multiple years, we were happy to report last year that we had reached our goal of $15,000,000. With the rise in construction costs, we needed additional funds and a review of the construction plans before breaking ground on the new multipurpose Theater and Arts Building. In spring 2025, we received a challenge match of $750,000, and that match amount has been raised. We still anticipate estate gifts and end-of-year gifts to help complete funding for the project. Thank you to all who have given so generously to this campaign!

Memorare Society

Of course, we remain profoundly grateful for our dear friends in the Memorare Society. Now numbering 112 members and growing, these special individuals are helping to ensure the long-term ability of the School to educate and form future generations by remembering Cistercian in their estate plans. It is an honor to include their names in this Annual Report (page AR – 43) and on a plaque in the Abbey Crypt.

Financial Report

Thankfully, Cistercian Preparatory School operates every year in the black with tuition revenue and other income covering fully all of our annual operating costs. And, as confirmed in our 2024-2025 audit by Whitley Penn, our accounting policies and procedures are always clean and reflect the highest degree of financial due diligence. This is due in no small part to the sage guidance and support of Cistercian’s Audit Committee. Many thanks to Fr. Abbot Peter ’73, Peter Smith ’74, Karl Springer, Dan Odom, and Bruce Stevenson ’89 for sharing their time, energy, and expertise throughout the 2024-2025 school year.

Further, despite the ups and downs of the market each year, returns on Cistercian’s endowments still rank

consistently in the top quartile of any educational endowment in the country, large or small. Tremendous gratitude is owed to the members of our Investment Committee: Fr. Abbot Peter ’73, Kathy Muldoon, Peter Smith ’74, Ed Johnson ’80, David Haley, Duane Roberts, Alex Nettune ’94, and our investment advisor, Brendan Lucier, of LCG Associates, Inc. Finally, a huge debt of gratitude is owed to Cistercian’s Business Office under the leadership of Cindi Tenney, Ann Picha, and Jen Ditto. Big Families, Big Hearts

One can imagine the banter when four, five, or as many as eight current Hawks or alumni from the same family gather around the dinner table.

It’s only a matter of time before the impersonations break out.

F

rom the school’s earliest days, large families with four, five or as many as eight boys have seen their sons pass through the halls of Cistercian.

Alums from large families routinely say that it wasn’t easy blazing a trail for younger brothers; nor is it a simple matter following in the footsteps of older siblings. But having several Hawks around the dinner table at home invariably leads to lively banter and amateur impersonations of a certain foreign language accent and mannerism.

Of course, addressing students by only their surname can cause considerable confusion. Multiple heads will turn and often fingers point at an unsuspecting and possibly completely innocent sibling. Despite the inevitability of some stereotyping by surname, brothers eventually make their own way, most often with the help of their siblings and always with the help of the Cistercian monks and faculty.

As one mother put it, Cistercian was able to give each of her four sons the opportunity to “choose the path that will take them where their talents can shine.”

In the beginning…

Each had his own unique way…

“I

t was interesting to see each one choosing how to fit in,” said Iona Fernandes of her four Hawk sons: Ben ’17, Jason ’18, Christopher ’21 and Zachary ’25.

It all started, this journey of four sons through Cistercian, with a casual glance while driving down Hwy 114. “We had moved here from California when Ben was four years old,” said Val Fernandes. “I was driving down 114 and saw the Cistercian sign, so I looked into it. We wanted a Catholic education for our children, so the boys went to St. Monica’s before Cistercian. Ben didn’t understand why he was moving

schools. He was happy where he was, but he went along with us. Later, we had to explain it to Jason too. But when Chris’s turn came, he couldn’t wait to get there. And Zach had been waiting for his turn since he was three.”

The boys were different, but they all found their niches. A couple got into music and theater productions, another the math club and academic competitions. They all took up a variety of sports. “As a senior, Zach joined the football team, which offered a whole new experience for him and our family,” Val said. “He developed new friendships and learned to balance the time commitments of a varsity sport and his academic schedule.” The brothers realize that the study skills they developed at Cistercian set them up for success in college and later in life.

Although every son had his own interests and talents, each ended up with the perfect Form Master. “It was an amazing blessing to see how their Form Masters’ personalities matched up with each of our sons,” Val said. “Fr. Joseph was a true shepherd for Ben, Jason thrived with Fr. Augustine, Chris, who was math oriented, had Fr. Lawrence, and Fr. John helped Zach discover his love of philosophy.”

“There are opportunities at Cistercian for each boy to shine,” Iona explained. And that they did.

Its own little world…

y husband and I were looking at private schools for our five boys and wanted a place with both freedom and unity,” said Carol Wood. “And that’s what we found in Cistercian.”

All five Wood boys began in Form I, with the oldest three graduating (Asher ’94, Fulton ’96, Nelson ’98, followed by Taylor—Class of 2001, and Leighton—Class of 2003). The shared experiences of them all have made a difference in their lives.

Asher recalled that he was comforted that his brothers experienced so many of the same classes and teachers. “It was easy to think of the school as a place from which we would be ready to move out into the world in strength,” said Asher. “Thankfully, it is also a home to which we may easily return.”

Leighton described a current of respect in their shared experience, a respect for the institution and for each other. Nelson recalled how to this day they have a good laugh enjoying memories from their time at Cistercian. “So many of the inside jokes and stories persist today,” said Nelson.

Each Hungarian priest had a unique accent and oratorial style that the brothers can still parody. Such as: “So really now… take your time. I live here.” Or, “Mr. Vooood!”

Or again, “Conjugulations, guys!”

Following an older brother to Cistercian who blazed the trail, so to speak, and another following after him, had its advantages for Fulton. “Definitely felt a sense of belonging,” he recounted. “It was a great experience playing on the same soccer team with each of them. And it added

camaraderie on the bus each day. I was already known by the faculty and coaches.”

Taylor’s time at Cistercian nurtured many academic pursuits, especially art. He went on to become an architect.

Later, he shared an interesting perspective on the school with his mother.

“Taylor told me once that there is an overlap between the familiar and the new,” Carol recalled. “And the things we love most have this overlap. Having older brothers at Cistercian gave him a certain sense of familiarity and security with the place despite it being new for him. That’s what Cistercian gave him so that later, when he went to another school or went on to a professional career, he could provide this overlap for himself. It gave him the ability to give himself what he needed when he was in a tough situation.”

Asher reflected that if a successful art teacher causes his students to each make their own unique work of self-expression, then a successful school causes the students to know themselves with tools to not only explore further academic curiosity, but to better arrive at a calling.

“It’s interesting that we were all together for a time in such a place while we were becoming who we would be for the rest of our lives, and we’re all so different and have taken different paths in life.”

“I remember going to an open house during Pete’s first year, and Fr. Matthew Kovács was his Latin teacher. He stopped the class when I walked in and said, ’Here’s one of my former students, and not a very good student either.

For many of the students from the early days, the school became entwined in the lives of their families. “My family and my classmates have had many baptisms, confirmations and funerals at Cistercian,” Peter remembered.

Peter’s parents were part of a group of parents who were instrumental in the founding of Cistercian Prep School. “My mom, Beth, had a friend, Jane Bret, who was taking classes at the University of Dallas and knew the Cistercian monks teaching there. Those two, Mrs. Healy, and Mrs. Haggerty decided to start a school for boys that would be better than other schools in Dallas. The school’s first location was an empty boarding school building adjacent to Ursuline Academy. On the first day of class at drop-off, there was my mom out in front of the school mowing the grass,” Peter said with a laugh.

A few years later, the school moved to its permanent location. “A lot had to happen in those early days to make it come together,” said Peter. “The school struggled mightily for four or five years, financially and organizationally. But my parents and other founding families kept it together.”

Cistercian was different, Peter pointed out, when all five Smith brothers were students. “It was a start-up; some might have called it an experiment. The monks from Hungary The Smith siblings didn’t speak English very well, and the students came from

olly and Don Campbell considered Cistercian for their five sons with a degree of caution.

“Our boys—Donovan ’97, Caleb ’00, Joshua ’02, Jordan ’04, and Chase ’07—went to another school through sixth grade and then went to Cistercian in seventh,” Don explained. “I am a graduate of St. Mark’s, but when we looked at the best private schools in the area, Cistercian was always at the top of the list. And the tuition was lower by a third!”

Still, they were cautions. They were devout members of a non-Catholic Bible church.

“Polly and I interviewed Fr. Peter, who was headmaster of the school at the time, and he handled it very well,” Don said. “Something funny happened in one of Donovan’s first religion classes though. It was after Mass in the Abbey Church, and Fr. Peter was teaching. At the end of class, he asked if anyone had questions. Donovan raised his hand and asked: ’Why is that statue of Mary in the Abbey three times bigger than Jesus?’

Again, Fr. Peter handled it well.”

Like so many other families, their time at Cistercian on the athletic fields and courts brought the Campbell boys and their entire family together. The bonding and support the boys gave to each other, and received from their classmates, teachers, Form Masters, and the community at large, was always there for them “in good times and bad,” as Don

described it. The entire community needed it to get through three tragedies: the deaths of Dee Walker (Class of 1997), Donovan’s best friend on the football team, Athletic Director Tom Hillary, and Seth Henderson ’03.

“Those shared experiences with the boys brought us closer together as a family and deepened our faith,” Don said. “Those were some hard times, but the community came together. We were drawn together to support each other, and we did. The memories of visiting Seth’s hospital waiting room and seeing all the other parents and boys there are still as vivid as ever.”

And there are plenty of good memories too, such as Jordan at quarterback and Chase as a defensive back playing together on the same football field. Don said, “It worked out really well.”

Becoming their identity…

around others that might have been a bit crazier than he was. Cistercian is such a small school, yet it provides something for everybody.”

The monks made a lasting impression on the Spence boys. “They probably didn’t understand what the monks gave them when they were there, but they will later,” Tom said. “One of our boys came back from college in something of a crisis of faith. Nothing major, but it was something you might expect from a college student who is maturing in his faith. He called Fr. Roch and went to see him. I had never known they were particularly close, but after they talked, the crisis passed. Fr. Roch had calmed the waters.”

And, of course, there was Fr. Bernard’s story of his escape from Communist Hungary. “If they heard nothing else, hearing that story was worth the tuition,” Tom said.

All in all, giving their five sons the experience of Cistercian wasn’t just a blessing for the boys, it affected Tom, Amy and the entire family. “We were lucky to have a string of boys going through Cistercian,” Tom said. “We were there for a long stretch of time. I’m glad we had more than one son there because eight years goes by so fast.”

“Cistercian wasn’t just a place where they went to school,” Tom said. “It was their whole identity. And all of the boys shared that.”

The elder three, Kenneth ’06, Patrick ’08 and John Paul ’12, graduated from Cistercian while the younger two, Philip and Peter, would have been members of the graduating classes of 2016 and 2018 respectively had the family not moved to Washington, D.C. in 2012.

The Spence boys were in some ways very different from each other and in other ways much the same, Tom explained. They all seemed inclined toward literature and history and not math and science. Athletic interest and ability varied among the brothers, but they all took advantage of the opportunity to play team sports.

“Kenneth, our oldest, played baseball in middle school,” Tom recalled. “He was perhaps not the star of the team, and usually occupied a spot in the outfield far from most of the action. But on his birthday, the coach asked what he wanted, and he said he wanted to pitch. Surprisingly, the coach let him take the mound for one batter. It didn’t go well, but it made Kenneth happy. Where else would that happen?”

Although he might not have excelled at baseball, Kenneth found his niche with the Quiz Bowl team. “He really enjoyed the other boys on the team. They were all a bit wild and crazy in a good way, and it was a relief for Kenneth to be

It was meant to be…

couldn’t get the idea out of my head,” said Liz Heyne.

She was in Southern Colorado working in a health care camp for migrant workers shortly before she and Roy were married. “I would look out on the beautiful scenery and get this idea of a monastery as the center of an entire community and the monks in the monastery would come from an Eastern European country behind the Iron Curtain.”

That vision, prompted perhaps by her memory of watching as a six-year-old the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 on a black-and-white TV, didn’t materialized in Southern Colorado, but somewhere else.

“We married and came to the University of Dallas to study medical ethics. I was surprised when I found Cistercian and all these monks. I had even dreamed they would come from Hungary. I thought at the time: this is it!”

So began the long line of Heynes—Joseph ’94, Peter ’97, Nick ’99, Tommy ’02, and Jon Paul ’06—treading the halls of Cistercian.

“We came to Cistercian to be a part of its spiritual community,” said Liz. The rhythms of the monastery soon became the rhythms of the Heyne family. And sometimes that led to unexpected outcomes. “We’d bring all of the kids to 6:30 a.m. Mass in two cars, and it was dark. Sometimes, when they were very young, we’d let them sleep during Mass.

Once, Tommy crawled under a pew and went to sleep. Roy and I went our separate ways, and I received a call later from

the Abbot who found Tommy asleep. He said: ’Mrs. Heyne, would you please come and claim one of your children.’ I was so embarrassed. And it happened at least five more times!”

Of course, their time at Cistercian had both highs and lows. “Cistercian demands academic excellence,” Liz said.

“When Joseph, our oldest, was in Form I, he came home and said: ’It’s too hard! I want to go back to my old school.’ But Roy worked diligently to help each of them. And after Mass in the morning, the boys would go to early morning study hall with Coach Hillary. That helped too.”

And all the while, Liz kept that vision of a spiritual community centered around a monastery.

“We thought we had gotten the last one out of Cistercian—no more driving back and forth to school—but now it seems it might be a lifetime Andrews at Cistercian commitment,” David said.

David and Thu-Lan knew of Cistercian from their time as students at the University of Dallas.

“When Matthias was old enough to take the admissions test, we didn’t want to put pressure on him, so we used a little trickery,” David said. “Actually, we lied. We told him that he was testing for a summer program. I’m sure he saw right through it.”

After that, wild horses couldn’t keep the Andrews boys away.

“Joseph (three years behind Matthias) asked what would be the fastest way for him to get there,” Thu-Lan said. “He was in first grade. We told him he had to wait until he was entering fifth grade. So, he said he wanted to skip second grade. We told him what he needed to do and he did it. He skipped second grade and went to Cistercian a year early.”

As he goes through his time of discernment, Br. David recalls how he felt drawn into the community as a student only to find an even deeper sense of the place while in college and now as a novice in the monastery.

“It was incredible how close my brothers and I felt to each other and the school because of all of our shared experiences, but also because of the faculty, the other students, and staff,” he said. “It’s such a tight-knit place, especially because of the monks. I felt the love of my Form Master, Fr. Lawrence. He wanted me to do well, to succeed. And that was a big draw for me to enter the monastery, to tap into that love.”

Last spring, Jacob Durst was honored with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Nashville Visionary of the Year award after raising $67,000 in just ten weeks to benefit blood cancer research. He is especially grateful for the efforts of classmates Aubrey Skalak and Tyler Young. As a leukemia survivor, the cause is near and dear to his heart. Jacob is looking forward to helping the LLS in its mission going forward and would love to connect with anyone interested in getting involved. At the end of October, Matthew Steidle married Christine Rottler in a nuptial Mass celebrated by Fr. Stephen Gregg ’01 in the Cistercian Abbey Church.

Matthew is a resident in urology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and co-authored an article titled “Study Endpoint Fulfillment and FDA Approval Success in Phase III Clinical Trials of Genitourinary Malignancies” for publication in Clinical Genitourinary Cancer, a peer-reviewed medical journal.

On May 31, Scotch Gorman married Ashlyn Boucher in The Colony, TX. There was plenty of support from his Cistercian classmates and faculty. The couple is currently living in Trinity Groves near Downtown Dallas. After entering a dual-degree program in a class of five candidates some years ago at UPenn, John Kane graduated with a JD and a Wharton MBA in May. He is currently working for a corporate law firm in NYC as an associate in the transactional practice of restructuring/ mergers and acquisitions in the public company sector. Michael Uhrick moved back to Dallas from Boston last January.

He recently covered about 60 miles on the Camino de Santiago in northern Spain and then visited the Vatican and Rome before heading back to Texas and work. After working in Singapore for a few years, T. J. Skipworth has moved to Taiwan to attend Mandarin Chinese school in the southern city of Tainan.

Nico Walz won the Evelyn Waugh Society’s John H. Wilson Jr. Undergraduate Essay Contest for his paper, “An Education in Eros: The Symposium in Waugh’s Decline and Fall.” The essay was published in the spring 2025 issue of Evelyn Waugh Studies. Albert Parmenter spent his summer analyzing the results of research conducted at the Neutron Time of Flight Facility at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland. Albert was one of two University of Dallas undergrads working alongside graduate and PhD students.

Their research has possible future applications in cancer treatment. During a summer adventure, Mateo Creixell and Diego Prida visited with Abbot Maksimilijan of the Stična Abbey. Dating from 1132, it is the only operating Cistercian monastery in Slovenia and one of the country’s greatest cultural, church and architectural monuments.

Christopher Lobmeyer spent his summer as an assistant ranger at Camp Constantin in Graford, TX. Among his jobs: snake wrangler; A LOT of rattlesnakes! After bravely battling cancer for the past year, Carter Soderberg has resumed his studies at Fordham University and is thriving. Last fall, just after his diagnosis, he and his teammates won the Fordham Gabelli School’s prestigious Consulting Cup, a semester-long competition where over 100 undergraduate teams acted as real-world consultants, analyzing companies, developing innovative solutions, and presenting to industry judges, and Carter was also named his team’s MVP. This fall, he was re-elected to Fordham Student Government as a senator, and his Mock Trial team earned first place at the University of Pennsylvania Mock Trial Competition.

Lisa Hernández, Head of World Languages and Spanish teacher, will be a part of a speaker series at the University of North Texas highlighting distinguished alumni. In October, Fr. Gregory Schweers was invited by the Meadows Museum at SMU to give a tour and lecture on “Art and Religion at the Meadows.” Fr. Gregory’s presentation centered around four pieces of art he chose from the collection. “It was a hoot having so many enthusiastic people show up spontaneously and take a risk on a tour by the newbie, but we all had fun! There were great questions from the audience and loads of helpful feedback,” said Fr. Gregory.

In Memoriam Cabot McColm Webb—Class of 2029

March 12, 2010 – October 5, 2025 Remembered by Crayton Webb smiley, happy baby who grew to have an infectious smile, clever wit, charisma and a silly “goofball” sense of humor, Cabot Webb made a huge impression on all who met him.

He was very proud to have been admitted to Cistercian Preparatory School and had just begun his freshman year and was playing Hawks football.

Cabot loved being front and center in his younger years—especially at home where he would put on performances for holidays and “hold court” during family dinner with jokes and Cabot McColm Webb stories.

From a young age, he was a daredevil with remarkable physical strength who could often be found climbing trees or swing sets.

At the beginning of every school year, Cabot’s parents would tell his teachers that he was their “M&M”—tough on the outside but soft in the center. This proved true throughout his life with Cabot’s tender sensitivity revealed only to those who knew him best or paid special attention. As he became a teenager he, at times, had an awkward shyness that revealed his true humility.

Cabot was very smart and loved to debate. He would ask questions or make points that could stump or silence sometimes even his teachers and most especially his parents. The day before he passed, he shared a story about a debate he prompted one day after a Form V theology class about the presence of God and the space time continuum.

He was extremely polite, always shaking hands with his elders, looking them in the eye as he would greet them. The monks at Cistercian were patient with Cabot as he continually addressed them as “sir.”

Cabot made friends easily, and they, along with his three siblings, were his most cherished relationships. He will be remembered for his caring way, as a kind, joy-filled soul who enjoyed making others happy most often by making them laugh.

He loved vacationing with his family in his favorite tropical spot or skiing down double black diamonds with ease. He played a host of sports throughout his life—soccer, swimming, sailing and karate in his early years and later football, wrestling, boxing and especially weightlifting.

Lovingly called “Cabby” and “Cabot Wabbit,” he was deeply loved and admired by his parents and siblings. Cabot leaves behind parents Nikki and Crayton Webb and siblings Nelson, Mitchell and Lucy; grandparents and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins from Oregon and Texas. His entire family looked up to him. He will be greatly missed. But his memory and impact will live on with God’s blessing and grace. •

Fall Sports Hawks E-A-T

Sebastian Soriano ’27 hree words set the expectations for every student who earns and wears a Cistercian jersey each Friday night during football season: Effort. Attitude. Toughness. That mantra, E-A-T, was exemplified especially this season with many obstacles to overcome for the team.

Despite the loss of an impressive senior class, the varsity football players were determined to hold themselves to a standard of excellence. With the addition of a new strength and conditioning coach, Colton Rosseau, the team felt more prepared than ever to exude fortitude in each individual game. The highlight of the season was a 49-8 win over the St. Andrew’s Highlanders, in which Jacob Liu ’26, Patrick Sporl ’26, Brett Sharp ’26, and Trevor Stanley ’28 each ran for over 50 yards. Their efforts helped the team post 302 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.

On the defensive end, Major Beasley ’26 and Dean Nevitt ’26 dominated. Beasley broke up three passes; Nevitt interrupted two passes, recorded an interception, and blew up a play in the backfield that allowed for a 70-yard scoop and score. Andrew Davis ’27 and Harrison Hart ’27 stood out as well, each sacking the opposing quarterback.

The Hawks proved their resilience on countless occasions, putting up outstanding offensive performances even with some players sidelined. Freshmen Charlie Rogers ’29, Harrison Moran ’29, and Bradford Wang ’29 were tasked with filling in critical spots late in the season and showed grit and determination in their roles. The challenges the team faced strengthened the young men as football players and, more importantly, as brothers.

The future is promising for the Hawks with several key starters returning, many of the younger players receiving game experience this year, and an impressive eighth-grade class coming up.

Varsity runners place at SPC Championship

Zac Vaid-Shaikh ’28 istercian’s varsity cross-country team, led by Ben Brittian ’26 and Will Oliver ’27, had a strong start to their season, finishing second at Greenhill’s 40th Annual Six-Mile Relay in 32:43—nearly a minute faster than last year.

The following week at the Marcus Invitational, their largest meet of the season against over ten 6A teams, the boys excelled in their first 5k: Brittian ran 16:16, just one second off the school record, Oliver set a 30-second PR at 16:40, Dylan Kowalski ’26 opened with 17:30, and both Anderson Lee ’28 and Vincent McColm ’29 broke 18:30 to round out the top five.

Subsequent meets—the Calvin McGill Invitational in Fort Worth, Flower Mound Invitational, and Southwest Christian—saw finishes of first, fifth, and second respectively. In Fort Worth, the Hawks dominated with all top five runners in the top 20, while Rishi Gopal ’27, Ian Tran ’27, John McHugh ’28, Zac Vaid-Shaikh ’28, and Caedmon Hendricks ’28 placed in the top 50 out of nearly 200 runners. At Southwest Christian, multiple personal records were set, including first and second place individual finishes. At the inaugural Cistercian Invitational, the Hawks shined again, with Oliver claiming gold for the first time.

Heading into the SPC Championship, projections had the team at 74 points, but they outperformed expectations in Houston. Seven of ten runners set personal bests, highlighted by Oliver’s 16:35 finish for third place, just one second off second place. McColm and Lee both broke 18 minutes, finishing 16th and 17th. Brittian, returning from injury, ran 17:02 for eighth. The Hawks secured third overall with 67 points—their best SPC finish ever—and are already looking ahead to the 2026 season! •

nder perfect October skies and surrounded by the beauty of campus, five varsity cross-country teams from across the Metroplex competed in the first Cistercian Invitational on the new cross-country trail. This is the first time for the Hawks to run an upper school cross-country meet at home, and their familiarity with the course was a benefit. Runners and coaches agreed that the Cistercian course is the most challenging they have encountered. Alumni who ran the Reunions Weekend 5K were amazed by the natural beauty of the course. Head Coach Dennis Harris hopes to add a middle school meet next year. “The spirited atmosphere, perfect weather and beautiful course made for an extremely successful event,” said Harris. “The meet was well organized, and coaches from other teams were complimentary and impressed by the challenging course.”

The finer points of grading

T

here’s a lot of repetition in human life, and certainly in teaching. Sometimes this is a good thing.

You teach the Odyssey every year, and you like it more every time. You grade forty essays about it, and you begin to feel somePatrick Spence ’08 thing else.

Writing is a complex task, and a piece of writing is improved, like anything complex, by fixing one problem at a time. A given boy may have two or three major errors to choose from, and perhaps ten minor ones. Each time he reviews an outline or a draft, he can generally tackle one of the big ones, or a few of the smaller sort. Time being finite and attention costly, some errors will remain.

Teaching a class about these errors in advance will reduce their frequency, but (less than helpfully) it increases the frustration of seeing them in submitted work. One feels ignored when a boy makes a mistake he has just been warned about, even though he has probably missed it while dutifully catching several others.

Then there is the fact that an error made by half of the boys in the class becomes, after the tenth time you correct it, more irritating than a truly inventive

mistake, which has at least the charm of novelty. But should a boy who makes a common error suffer for being tenth in the stack?

It is as if he had come home and left his shoes on the stairs, ten minutes after his mother tripped over his brother’s shoes in the same spot.

The thing about parenting is that the kids grow up.

The thing about teaching is that they don’t, or rather, they are replaced as they begin to.

The only effective way I have found to guard against the frustration this sort of mistake induces is to spend a few minutes before I grade actually picturing my boys fixing their errors and missing a few of them in the process. I return to that thought when I find, for the eleventh time, a vague conclusion beginning with “This shows.”

The best grading holds back, marking only a few well-chosen and connected problems.

It is actually easier to mark everything, but that is as helpful as telling a lousy batter that his whole swing is a disaster. One thing at a time.

Eventually, the boys do learn.

Well, most of them learn. Then they are all suddenly taken off my hands.

The thing about parenting is that the kids grow up. The thing about teaching is that they don’t, or rather, they are replaced as they begin to.

The job of the shepherd is to love with repetitive care. The sheep keep straying off. You keep bringing them back to the grass they wouldn’t eat yesterday. They keep walking into the thorns. You keep looking for cuts and binding them up. The more repetition you get, I suppose, the more perfect your care becomes—or else the more routine and careless.

I have a large bottle of red ink, which I have nearly emptied. Long ago I bought it for the name of the color, which is “Matador.” The matador slays the bull. So too the English teacher.

But I am coming to realize, after many years of marking essays, that I am the bull. That the boys are the matadors, that the red I spill while grading is my own, that their vague antecedents or comma splices or illegible conclusions are capes waving me into the arena.

The trick is not to see red and charge. It is to know that, although I am the heavier and stronger animal, my job is not to win. •

The Size of the Universe

ecently, I came across an article on the size of the universe. The numbers, discovered by astronomers after decades of study, stunned me. They are not guesses, but facts established through long and careful observation.

Years ago, I read J. B. Phillips’s book Your God Is Too Small. Too often, people fail to grasp what it means that God is almighty. They may say the universe is “big,” but its true size is beyond imagination.

Fr. Julius Leloczky Consider just a few realities: 1. The Universe’s age is estimated at 13.7 billion years. The farthest observable galaxies are nearly 14 billion light years away. Light itself would take 14 billion years to cross such a span.

2. The Milky Way Galaxy, our cosmic home, is 100,000 light years across and contains about 500 billion stars. Yet it is only a speck in the universe.

3. Two trillion galaxies have been observed by astronomers.

4. The largest known galaxy, IC 1101, stretches 5.5 million light years across and holds trillions of stars.

5. Smaller galaxies close to our Milky Way galaxy, like the Large Magellanic Cloud, still span 14,000 light years across and contain 10 billion stars.

Even these few numbers reveal the astonishing scale of creation. What an all-powerful Creator God we have, who brought forth such a cosmos! Could something of this grandeur simply arise by itself from nothing?

When God creates, He does not make something small. Whatever He brings into existence is “God64

sized”: vast, majestic, and beyond our limited comprehension. And yet, in our pride, we boast of “great” achievements—like traveling to the moon, a mere 240,000 miles away. How small this seems when measured against galaxies millions of light years across!

How can we rebel against the God who made such a universe?

But God’s greatness is not only in power. His love is equally immeasurable. St. Bernard of Clairvaux once said that the measure of God’s love is that it has no measure at all. St. John tells us that “God is love.” Love is not just one quality of God—love is His very being. He is love. The One who made galaxies beyond counting loves each human being with the tenderness of a mother for her child. We rest in arms that are infinitely strong, yet infinitely gentle.

And this same Creator chose to come into His creation. The Son of God, through whom all things were made, entered our tiny planet as a helpless infant. St. Paul wrote of Christ: “Though he was in the form of God, he did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness” (Phil 2:6–7). To reflect on the immensity of the universe is to marvel even more at the humility of the Incarnation.

If there is an outer space of unimaginable size, there is also an inner space—the soul of every human being.

Each of us is called to be a temple of the infinite God, a dwelling place for His Spirit. St. Irenaeus, the secondcentury theologian, captured this truth when he wrote, “The glory of God is man fully alive.”

To know something of the size of the cosmos is to gain perspective on the greatness of the Creator—and the wonder of His love. The God who made galaxies without number has chosen to make His home in us.

In awe and gratitude, we can only echo the hymn of the Church: Gratias agimus Tibi propter magnam gloriam tuam— We give You thanks for Your great glory! •
