In Schools to Help Kids Stay in School Wherever They Are, Whatever It Takes.

A Joint Message From Our CEO & Affiliate Executive Director At Communities In Schools, we do whatever it takes to remove barriers to student success. With at least one full-time professional in 81 schools across the state, we prioritize building trusting relationships with the students and families we serve. We know that education is more than just school. For our children to thrive, they require a comprehensive approach to their development. By working to address their basic, social-emotional, and academic needs, we unlock individual potential ensuring our students stay in school and graduate. In Nevada, more than 60 percent of students and families are experiencing poverty and other adverse circumstances. At CIS we currently reach 1 in 5 Title I

schools in the state. While we have made significant progress over our 18 years of service, we know there’s a long way to go with thousands of students still in need of additional support. We won’t rest until we fulfill our vision of ensuring every child has what they need to succeed. We thank our current supporters for helping us realize that vision. We invite you to connect with us to learn more by emailing us today. Yours, in service,

Tami Hance-Lehr CEO & State Director tamih@cisnevada.org

Student Success Stories Transformative relationships are key to unlocking a student’s potential. Every Communities In Schools success story starts with the relationship between student and Site Coordinator. Site Coordinators are caring adults

who serve full-time on school campuses to connect students and families to community resources, acting as guides for students traveling the path to graduation.

Aryoc and Site Coordinator Cornell Williams J. E. Manch Elementary School Clark County School District Breaking down barriers to distance learning and building up self esteem. Aryoc saw firsthand the transformative power of having a caring adult on campus who will champion student success. A bright student who once struggled with confidence, he now greets you with a smile and looks you in the eye.

When schools transitioned to distance learning, Aryoc didn’t have a reliable way to log on and attend class. Cornell, his Communities In Schools Site Coordinator, worked to provide anything he needed to fully participate in his academics. Over time, Aryoc developed a close relationship with the Communities In Schools program and knows that when the going gets tough, he always has someone to turn to for whatever he needs to succeed.

Krystianna and Site Coordinator Cheryl Arteaga Mike O’Callaghan Middle School i3 Learn Academy Clark County School District Building meaningful connections to unlock academic achievement. Krystianna has worked with Communities In Schools for three years. After a series of poor grades in her classes, particularly math, she was referred to Site Coordinator Cheryl Arteaga who saw potential within. With a meaningful connection to a caring adult on campus, Krystianna’s reticence to engage in class discussions melted away and her grades showed significant improvement. Her site coordinator set goals — to bring her grade from a ‘D’ to a ‘C’ or higher grade — and she surpassed them! With an A in math for the first, second and third quarters of her eighth grade year, she was recognized as the most improved student in math. In addition to her academic achievement, she’s grown in confidence, improving her self-esteem.

“

Mrs. Arteaga helped me with my hardest class and now I am proud to say I have earned an A in math!

Supporting student mental health and positive behavioral change. First enrolled in the Communities In Schools program at Monaco Middle School, London’s story is a testament to the power of consistent support. After healing from the traumas of sexual abuse and suicidal ideation with the support of her middle school site coordinator, she transitioned to a school without the CIS program and slipped back into depression — affecting her behavior and academic performance.

I am starting to see that ‘The sky is the limit,’ as Ms. Jhoana says to me all the time. -London, High School Student

”

London then transferred to Desert Pines High School and was immediately reconnected to CIS and Site Coordinator Jhoana Duarte. Jhoana supported London with referrals to mental health professionals and worked with her virtually throughout the pandemic. Allene, London’s mom, credits CIS as a key partner supporting their family — and ensuring London graduated in 2021. Communities In Schools of Nevada | 6

Meeting the Needs of the Whole Child. For a student to succeed academically, they must show up ready to learn every day. And yet, for many families, persistent and systemic barriers exist and stand in the way. By bringing the community into the school, we mobilize resources and leverage community partnerships to meet the needs of the whole child. Whether it is hunger, transportation, housing instability, healthcare, and everything in between, our Site Coordinators connect families to solutions with compassion and diligence. We reach students wherever they are — in schools, at home, online and in communities — to ensure they have what they need to succeed in school and achieve in life.

By bringing the community into the school, our Site Coordinators mobilize resources and leverage community partnerships to focus on developing the whole child.
