WELCOME TO

THE MEDICAL ASSISTING PROGRAM!

Dawn Chism, AOS, CCMA, CET Director of Medical Assisting

Medical Assistants work alongside Physicians, Physician Assistants, and Nurse Practitioners in outpatient or ambulatory care facilities, such as medical offices or clinics, and Urgent Care facilities.

Medical Assistants are cross-trained to perform administrative and clinical duties.

Yeah, we are kind of a big deal!

WHAT IS A MEDICAL ASSISTANT?

(may include, but not limited to) • Using computer applications • Answering telephones • Greeting patients • Updating and filing patient medical records • Coding and filling out insurance forms • Scheduling appointments • Arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services

• Handling correspondence, billing, coding, and bookkeeping

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:

(may include, but not limited to) • Taking medical histories • Explaining treatment procedures to patients • Preparing patients for examination • Assisting the physician during exams & procedures • Collecting & preparing laboratory specimens • Performing basic laboratory tests • Instructing patients about medication & special diets • Preparing & administering medications as directed by a physician • Transmitting new prescriptions & refills as directed • Drawing blood • Performing electrocardiograms (EKG’s) & other testing

• Removing sutures & changing dressings

CLINICAL DUTIES:

(may include, but not limited to) • Administer schedule medications (controlled substances) • Administer contrast dyes • Give intravenous injections of any kind • Place sutures or insert an intravenous catheter • Obtain blood from artery • Take X-Rays (unless certified as an LRT) • Call in prescriptions for schedule II-V medications • Interpret any test or clinical finding • Diagnose or treat any disease • Use a laser

• Work independently without a practitioner in the facility

SO WHAT WILL WE LEARN IN LAB CLASS?

Externship, or Practicum, is 160 hours of skills practiced in an outpatient clinic.

It is performed in your last semester, and geared to provide you with valuable experience needed in preparing you for your new career!

What are the requirements for Practicum?

• Required courses in Certificate Program must be completed prior to entering Practicum

• Must meet with the PD once a semester for advisement on which courses to take the following semester

WHAT IS THE EXTERNSHIP?

PRACTICUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS • Completion of all courses, or be approved by the Program Director.

All Core courses must be passed with a minimum of a “C” • Complete a Practicum Packet • Provide proof of drug screen, background check, and immunizations within 3 weeks of beginning practicum. (Drug screen must be no later that 30 days prior to practicum) • MAERB Competency Checklist Completion
