TALENT RESOURCING OFFICER

CIS was proud to celebrate our Apprentices on National Apprenticeship week. National Apprenticeship Week runs from 10th to 16th February and aims to raise awareness of the many benefits apprenticeships offer.

10-16 FEBRUARY 2025 Apprenticeships are embedded into CIS’ recruitment and succession strategies. We have Apprentices across the business providing a broad range of exciting job roles. There are options for everyone: from entry-level qualifications through to degree apprenticeships across vital specialisms, such as HR, IT, Risk & Intelligence and Front-Line Security. It was great to share some fantastic stories from our Apprentices about how their work and learning journeys benefit them and the business.

Tracy Plant, CIS’s very proud HR Director said: “I would like to congratulate all our past, present and future Apprentices. At CIS, Apprenticeships play a fundamental part in our succession planning, from entry-level to bridging skill gaps, and developing our existing colleagues. Some of our amazing stars started their careers as school leaver apprentices and are now departmental managers. Apprenticeships open the gateway to a wide pool of talented individuals from various backgrounds and educational levels. They enable inspiring, enthusiastic, and talented young people to thrive and become our future leaders.

TRACY PLANT HR DIRECTOR

Consider an Apprenticeship as a journey to success!”

“I chose a Sales and Marketing apprenticeship with CIS Security because it was a great chance to build my skills in a fast-paced, handson environment. I’ve always been interested in sales and marketing, and this apprenticeship gave me the perfect mix of real experience and learning from industry professionals. CIS stood out as the ideal place to grow because CIS allows me to incorporate my skills with real projects where I could make an

SECURITY FIRST LINE MANAGER APPRENTICESHIP A huge well don to Ahmer Rizvi, Security Operations Support Manager at Knightsbridge Estate for completing his final assessment ahead of schedule. Ahmer Rizvi stated: I wanted to take a moment to sincerely thank you for your support during my apprenticeship. The dedicated timings and space you provided allowed me to focus on my studies and successfully complete my apprenticeship. Your consideration has been invaluable in helping me achieve this milestone.

Mathew Haider, Mercury Assessor Feedback: “Excellent observation. Ahmer (Riz) has an excellent knowledge of his site, having been there since its inception. Riz’s ability to communicate with those around him respectfully and professionally is key to a successful security service. Riz has written toolbox talks for the security team, which are key to success. It is clear the officers, senior management,

staff, and clients all hold a high level of respect for Riz—he is a credit to his organisation. Well done!”

GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND John Salthouse, Security Manager at MidCity Place has been hard at work completing his Level 5 Operations Manager programme, whilst stepping into a new role as Security Manager at Mid-City Place. Currently working on a bleed kit project for the site, John is applying some of the valuable skills and knowledge gained from his Level 5 course, demonstrating his commitment to both professional development and site safety.

John’s Coach/Mentor, Colin, said: “John is an excellent learner, and he is progressing well. He listens well to the feedback given and always tries to implement what he has learnt.” Another great example of how the apprenticeship scheme with Mercury supports management development and career progression!

ELIANA WOOSNAM Undergraduate student studying Security and Crime Science BSc at UCL Although I think it’s probably for the best that I leave it to the professionals for now.

UPDATE!

Another highlight for me was spending a day with the Intelligence Hub team. Seeing how they manage to collect information about upcoming events that could impact all the various sites across the country was both fascinating and impressive. Particularly considering not only huge geographical variations in locations of sites but also huge differences in types of site users. I also really enjoyed visiting many of the sites themselves. I have now seen views of London from the roof of several buildings I never thought I would get to enter which was definitely an unexpected highlight. My favourite roof view was probably the Leadenhall building or Paddington Square. I got to experience firsthand how security interacts with building management and how public perceptions of security within a building can differ drastically depending on the

STREET CRIME PREVENTION SEMINAR - WORKING IN COLLABORATION WITH THE CITY OF LONDON POLICE On the 13th February, the 40 Leadenhall team collaborated with the City of London Police with the buildings first safety pop up event. This was supported by both front of house teams from CIS Security Limited and Rapport Guest Services. Our local City of London Police took the time to engage with our occupiers, giving them safety advice on such topics as phone snatches and bag thefts in bars. These are two of the highest crime trends in the City affecting many of us every week. This was a fantastic opportunity to raise the awareness of these crimes in an effort to support and protect each other. Thank you to the City of London Police for continuing to go above and beyond, helping those that travel into the City everyday.

CIS ASSESSMENT DAY John Salthouse, Security Manager MidCity Place) stated: “While I openly admit public speaking is not my forte, I felt confident in my delivery (with some nerves creeping in at some points) I felt overall, I was able to engage with the everyone while handling questions thoughtfully. I look forward to applying what I’ve learned to future presentations and continue working toward being a more confident speaker.”

Currently there are several positive structural changes happening within CIS, giving many people the opportunity to progress. This assessment day showed the positive forward thinking of the portfolio leaders, giving colleagues the opportunity to step out of their comfort zone and push their boundaries. This was a great example of CIS continuing to nurture and develop from within, supporting their staff to achieve their goals. Thank you to Domingo Desousa, Key Account Director, for arranging the assessment and a huge well done to Andrew Gough, Head of Security, for hosting and making this great day possible. A huge well done to those that presented.

Working at 40 Leadenhall, which is affected by the risk of protest, I found the course to be very informative and insightful. The course has helped me to gain more confidence and knowledge in how to deal with the risk and threat of protest. It has also helped me to have a better understanding of the legislation surrounding protesting. I hugely recommend this training to any site.”

On the 13th February, CIS hosted a Protest Awareness Training Seminar. At CIS, we remain dedicated to upholding the highest standards of service excellence. Ray Marskell

CIS FEATURED IN THE SECURITY JOURNAL UK Ray Marskell MSyl, Director of Risk and Intelligence, had the privilege of sharing with the Security Journal UK (SJUK) key insights on how technology can support the guarding elements of security services. Ray asked the question: “Are we ready as a sector, and how do we focus our efforts on upskilling people in the use of technology?”

Influencers

Director of Risk and Intelligence CIS Security Limited

Edition 2025

Ray has over 30 years’ experience of policing London with a career that spanned disciplines such as Public Order, Firearms, Counter Terrorism, International Training & Development and Strategic Partnerships. He is a member of the Security Institute and sits on various boards and committees, including roles as a Board member for Crime Stoppers London, as a Committee member with the City of London Crime Prevention Association and as a Member of the London Leadership Team for the City Security Council.

“As a sector, we have a duty to those we provide a service to and to those who offer that service, by ensuring we stay abreast and on the front foot when it comes to technology.”

A

s we close off 2024 and look to see what 2025 brings to our unique sector, I have thought about how current and future technology can support the guarding element of security service provisions. I think we all accept that technology is not only a fundamental enabler of services but also brings opportunities to harm the safety and security of people, places and infrastructure. For example, over the last year or so, the National Protective Security Authority has repeatedly reminded us of the real threats that counter uncrewed aerial systems (C-UAS) pose and has offered advice around a relevant security strategy that must be acknowledged and integrated with wider protective security measures. C-UAS mitigation measures must form part of a site’s concept of operations for security.

responsibility to identify and mitigate the threats of the new world? We need to find the answers together and put some real emphasis on embracing technology and innovation. However, this must be supported by a skilled workforce with the required knowledge. As a sector, we have a duty to those we provide a service to and to those who offer that service, by ensuring we stay abreast and on the front foot when it comes to technology. We have a duty to our people to keep them skilled and current; otherwise, we run the risk as a sector of falling behind and deskilling our current workforce.

Ray Ma

In brief, we need to work smarter with technology to mitigate the threats that technology brings.

My question is this: Are we ready as a sector and who do we need to focus our efforts on around upskilling in the use of technology? Is it the security officers and supervisors responsible for running an on-site control room, or do we need to completely refocus on

Our sector is growing at pace, which is great to see as it will offer even more diversity of opportunities, but we recognise there are anticipated shortfalls in headcount across the industry. To attract the next generation of security operatives, they will want to see that they are entering a career path that is not only full of opportunity but also one that utilises and operates as one with technology. Otherwise, we face a real risk of people deciding against joining the security sector for fear of being left behind in our digital age.

ALDGATE TOWER ACCESS CONTROL UPGRADE We recently partnered with Definitive Security Solutions to successfully upgrade the existing Sateon access control system at Aldgate Tower to a modern Grosvenor Janus C4 system. By utilising the existing cabling, we ensured the project stayed within budget without compromising quality. Before commencing the work, we developed a clear project plan outlining key milestones and providing accurate dates for each step of the process, working systematically floor by floor. Additionally, we conducted a detailed intrusive survey. This structured approach ensured the project remained on track and met the customer’s expectations.

Throughout the project, we held regular update meetings with the customer and site manager to foresee any issues and ensure a seamless transition between the two systems. Following the successful upgrade, we have installed a new panic alarm system, expanded CCTV coverage, and taken over the maintenance responsibilities for CCTV, access control, intercom, and intruder alarm systems at Aldgate Tower.

REMOTE MONITORING INSTALLATION AT 17 OLD PARK LANE We recently completed setup of a 9 camera CCTV reactive remote monitoring service at 17 Old Park Lane.

CIS Security Control Centre already provides remote monitoring for the building’s intruder alarm system; this is now supported and enhanced by the CCTV reactive remote monitoring service. Upon activation of the intruder alarm, officers in the CIS SOC will be able to remotely view the cameras and respond accordingly.

DON’T DISMISS A NEAR MISS A near miss today could be an accident tomorrow

Step 1: Recognise it – A near miss is an event or incident that could have resulted in injury, damage, or some negative outcome but ultimately did not.

Step 2: Report it – Reporting a near miss on our Mango platform takes less than 3 minutes.

Step 3: Review it – Once a near miss has occurred and has been report, it is important that it is reviewed, and corrective action is taken to ensure it does not reoccur.

• For every fatal or serious injury, there are 10 serious accidents, 30 minor accidents, and 600 near misses - HSE. • The more near misses reported, the less accidents. • Near misses may seem trivial but they are a valuable source of information. Taking time to review the underlying causes is likely to reduce risk, improve health and safety, and save time and money.

MAJOR RETAILER FINED AFTER AGENCY WORKER SUFFERED SERIOUS INJURIES The retail giant was fined after an agency worker suffered a fall which resulted in a serious injury. What were the circumstances of the incident and how could it have been avoided?

The failings The local council investigated the incident and determined the steps at the warehouse were unsafe and were an obvious and imminent risk. A prohibition notice was served on JL to immediately prevent the use of steps without handrails across operational conveyor belts in the warehouse.

In court The incident The worker climbed a set of small steps at a John Lewis (JL) distribution centre in Leicestershire in February 2022. The steps didn’t have a handrail, and the headspace was confined. He fell and sustained a broken hip which required extensive surgery and resulted in long-term complications.

JL admitted breaching sections 2 , 3 and 33(1)(a) Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and regulation 3 Management of Health and Safety Regulations 1999 . It was given a £1.2 million fine after a reduction had been granted following the company’s early guilty plea, remorse and compliance with the investigation. It also had to pay costs of £11,271.

Could this have been prevented? The onus is on businesses to ensure they provide safe working environments. There are some relatively simple and cost-effective controls that you can put in place that will prevent or reduce the severity of a fall on steps or stairs, including: Keeping stairways clear by removing clutter, loose objects or debris. Ensuring adequate lighting on stairways and task-based steps to improve visibility and help individuals navigate steps safely, especially in dimly lit areas or during night time. Using anti-slip materials or applying coatings on stair treads and steps to enhance traction. Regularly inspecting stairs and steps for damage, loose handrails, uneven surfaces, etc.

Hold the handrail Tip. It can also be a good idea to implement a “hold the handrail” policy in your work-place. Clearly outline the purpose of the policy, specifying the importance of holding the handrail when using stairs to prevent falls and promote workplace safety. Communicate the policy to all colleagues through training sessions, safety meetings, informative posters, email reminders or other channels to raise awareness and pro-mote compliance. Place clear signage near stairs encouraging colleagues to hold the handrail, reinforcing the importance of this safety practice.

Tip. Some workers may view this as “nanny culture” particularly if your safety culture is not where you need it to be, so make sure you provide training on the benefits of using handrails, proper stair use techniques and the potential risks of not following the policy.

Tip. Establish accountability measures to ensure that colleagues understand and follow the policy. Monitor compliance and address non-compliance through effective enforcement

mechanisms. Use our Mango to log overall compliance and enable trend analysis to see how quickly your staff are adapting to the new policy.

CIS FIRST RESPONSE EMERGENCY CARE LEVEL 3 TRAINING (FREC 3) Last month, Sami Dawood, Security Manager, Paternoster Square and Supervisor, Jack Scott Martin, took part in a FREC3 First Aid course, led by Darcy Fletcher, Company Trainer. Well done Jack Scott Martin for your enthusiasm and keenness to learn. Thank you Tom McCrone for hosting us and to Jason Southon, Duty Security Manager. Sami Dawood Stated: “This was a superb course from start to finish. Darcy Fletcher is the best First Aid trainer I have ever experienced. She truly is a subject matter expert and is passionate about teaching.”

BLUE MONDAY - MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING On Monday, January 20th, CIS Security Limited provided a Mental Health First Aid Training workshop for Blue Monday 2025. This training was hosted by 40 Leadenhall and presented by CIS Trainer, Paula Orton. Blue Monday is a day to acknowledge and address feelings of sadness and depression that some individuals may experience, especially during the winter months. It serves as a reminder to prioritise mental health and seek support if needed. We would like to say a huge thank you to 40 Leadenhall for hosting this event and a huge well done to Head of Security, Andrew Gough for organising this important workshop. Thank you Paula Orton for providing the training.

Paula Orton stated: “Mental Health First Aid is more important than ever. Given that 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem each year, I believe that the more people we have trained in Mental Health First Aid, the better off we will all be. It has been a pleasure to educate not only our CIS colleagues, but all our service partners at 40 Leadenhall this ‘Blue Monday’. Thank you for inviting me to be a part of this fantastic initiative.”

Andrew Gough stated: “At 40 Leadenhall we appreciate the importance of looking after not only our teams but everyone that comes into the building. This is not only physically but mentally. With the pressures we all face day to day, it’s easy to become secluded and isolated. This is where we need to be able to support each other. Blue Monday is ‘allegedly’ the most depressing day of the year. This makes it an ideal time to raise awareness and break down the stigma attached to Mental Health. The training provided by Paula Orton and CIS will go a long way in achieving this.”

TIME TO TALK DAY CIS Colleagues took some time to talk! It’s Time to Talk Day, dedicated to encouraging conversations about mental health and breaking the stigma surrounding it. Talking about mental health is a crucial step in tackling the isolation and discrimination that many people face, and Time to Talk Day provides an opportunity to spark these conversations. Mental health issues affect millions of people every year, and talking about them can be the first step towards getting the support and help needed. At CIS, we took some time to grab a brew, pull up a chair and talk things through.

40 LEADENHALL - VOLUNTEERING WORK On the 6th February three members of the 40 Leadenhall team volunteered and helped to serve breakfast at the Whitechapel Homeless Misson. They worked from 05:30-11:30 continuously preparing and serving food and hot drinks, taking the time to engage with as many people as possible. This was a great way for them to give back and help those in need. This event was organised by the engineer service provider at 40 Leadenhall GWS.
