YOUTH ASSESSMENT DAY On the 11th of June, Mafalda Oliveira, Talent Resourcing Specialist, hosted the first youth assessment day of the year, where 20 candidates attended with some having previous security experience and others having just finished school. The session commenced with an engaging presentation introducing CIS, our vision and culture, alongside an overview of all our corporate sites. From day one, I’ve been immersed in a fast-paced environment where I get to learn from experienced professionals and contribute to real business growth. One of the most valuable aspects of my journey so far has been gaining hands-on experience in both Sales and Marketing. I’ve had the opportunity to work on marketing campaigns, social media strategies, and branding initiatives, which have broadened my skills in digital marketing and content creation. The team at CIS has been incredibly supportive, providing mentorship and guidance that has helped me grow both professionally and personally. I’ve learned the importance of clear communication, strategic thinking, and adaptability skills that are essential in this industry. One of the biggest highlights so far has been seeing my work make an impact. Whether it’s helping to assist with a successful marketing campaign, or improving customer engagement, every task has contributed to my development and confidence in the field.” With each challenge and success, I’m building the foundation for a future in Sales and Marketing, and I’m grateful to CIS Security for this incredible opportunity.” 26

Emese, Will, and Raquell have now officially completed their placements with CIS. During their time with us, they gained valuable insight into how security operates across our portfolio, spending time with teams from Head Office, Intelligence, and Behavioural Detection. They also participated in several operational site visits, providing them with firsthand experience of security operations in practice. One of the programme’s highlights was the opportunity to take part in penetration testing exercises, where the students helped challenge our teams, procedures, and response capabilities through a range of realistic security scenarios. To conclude their placements, each student completed a research project focused on a key area of our operations, delivering valuable findings and recommendations. Emese’s project explored how Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) is gathered, monitored, and shared across CIS to help identify and mitigate emerging protest and activist-related threats to our customers. Will examined how security teams operating within multi-tenant buildings across the City of London communicate and share information, highlighting the effectiveness and value of our collaborative networks. Raquell reviewed the use of security technology and analytics across multiple sites, including CCTV and geofencing capabilities. Her research focused on how technology and frontline security personnel can work together to enhance threat detection and response.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all three students for their hard work, enthusiasm, and contributions throughout the programme. It has been a pleasure having them as part of the team, and we wish them every success in their future studies and careers.

OPERATIONAL COMMAND & CONTROL TRAINING PROGRAMME Command during an incident is a complex blend of critical thinking, leadership, communication, and decision-making. Effective command and control structures enable decision makers to maximise the use of available people, information, resources, and - most importantly - time. Incidents are often part of wider, multi-agency responses with potentially far-reaching consequences. In these situations, emergency responders and partner organisations operate under the Joint Emergency Services Interoperability Principles (JESIP). A clear and shared understanding of command and control terminology, responsibilities, and structures is therefore essential when working alongside emergency services and external agencies. This specialist programme provides participants with the skills and confidence to lead effectively during dynamic, high-pressure, and rapidly evolving incidents.

SOCIAL MEDIA AUDITORS GREAT FEEDBACK
Auditing activity is mostly harmless, and the amount of compromising information gathered by filming vehicles, personnel, equipment or the facility itself is generally minimal. Issues typically arise when staff and security engage in a hostile manner, by quoting legislation incorrectly, or by giving inaccurate statements such as “You are not allowed to film here”. While the Auditors themselves might not have hostile intent, the content they create and post online could be viewed by genuine hostile actors. As such, conveying an air of a professional security culture is helpful - such as highlighting the CCTV which alerted you to their presence - but without giving unnecessary insight into your security infrastructure or procedures. CHARITY ABSEIL Last week, CIS Security Limited was proud to collaborate with Derwent London for a charity abseil down the iconic 16-storey White Collar Factory building. A huge well done to Account Manager, Rifat Hasan, for braving the heat in his Spider-Man costume, all in support of a cause close to his heart. Rifat shares: “I just wanted to say it was an absolute honour and privilege to take part in the UCLH charity event, which is very close to my heart, in partnership with Derwent London. Although the heat was extreme and I was dressed as my favourite hero, Spider-Man, that small amount of discomfort is nothing compared to what many patients go through while being treated and supported by the incredible team at UCLH. If my small effort can make a positive impact on someone else, then it has truly been an honour to be part of it.” UCLH Charity raises vital funds to support patients, staff and research across University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, helping to make a real impact where it matters most. The fallout Within minutes of the incident taking place, I had a trail of disgruntled workers com-ing to see me and complain about the fact that there was “one rule for them, one for everyone else”. In some ways, I was pleased that so many staff made a point of chal-lenging the situation. They didn’t feel it was right and wanted to know my opinion on it. I had to have some very difficult conversations as I believed in the mandatory safety shoes rule, and was “on their side”, but at the same time had to support the senior management’s decision to allow the promotional shoot to go ahead.
An anecdote
A PRACTITIONER’S PERSPECTIVE
WHEN EXTERNAL INFLUENCES CHALLENGE YOUR CULTURE A health and safety practitioner shares a real-life situation - what went well and what could have been managed differently - so that your business can effectively deal with similar scenari-os. This month, a VIP guest to the factory would not wear safety shoes. What happened and what impact did this have on the safety culture?
During a high-profile tour by Gordon Brown (B), the then Prime Minister, of an oil re-finery, the standard procedure required all visitors to wear full personal protective equipment (PPE), including high-visibility jackets, hard hats and safety glasses. When B was handed safety glasses, he repeatedly refused to put them on. His reasoning was that he was worried about stumbling, falling or being entirely unable to navigate a highly hazardous industrial refinery in front of dozens of television cameras due to his poor eyesight overriding the risk from the work activities. The site manager claimed it was the single worst decision of his life to allow the tour to continue, as afterwards he was “laughed at” by his workers if he ever pulled them up on not wearing mandatory PPE.
The incident A well-known supermodel was visiting the factory to undertake a promotional tour and take photos for her social media campaign, which was linked to one of the brands produced at the site. The mandatory rule for entering the factory floor was safety shoes. However, the model’s management team refused the instruction, and insisted that she should wear five-inch heels. There was no compromise from them, e.g. walk to the area in safety shoes, and change quickly for the photo shoot. I was overruled in my objections by my senior management, who thought that the risk was so low, that it was “health and safety being over the top”. The photoshoot went ahead, with the model looking “glamourous” in a factory setting.
168
169
CIS NEWSLETTER SUMMER EDITION - JULY 2026
Lessons learned I had been endeavouring for many years to slowly and steadily raise the safety culture of the factory, trying to change workers’ hearts and minds about the importance of being involved in their own health and safety, rather than just doing it because they had been told to. I had to tread a balance between retaining my credibility with staff and not disrupting a “business activity” and getting a reputation as being a roadblock. Inconsistency in applying the rules can undermine a safety culture and by those rules being visibly breached it could have become much harder to enforce those same rules on others. However, an understanding of legislation stood me in good stead. Under regulations, employers must carry out a risk assessment of risks to both employees and non-employees arising from their work activities. It must be “suitable and suffi-cient”, which means it must focus on significant risks, be appropriate to the work done, and remain valid over a time period. Because in the model’s case no work was actually being undertaken and the photoshoot was over within half an hour, the risk was scored as very low. Staff did accept this explanation, meaning the safety culture remained on the upward trajectory.
Inconsistency in applying rules almost derailed a strong safety culture. If you have an exception to the rule, make sure that you are able to back the decision up with strong facts to remove emotion from the situation and maintain your culture without negative impacts.

Slip, Trips and Falls - Tool Box Talk Slips, trips and falls are one the most common types of incidents in the workplace, they happen every day and they happen to all of us.
The consequences of slips, trips and falls can be minor, such as bruises, grazes, pain, or more serious such as fractures, dislocations and head injuries resulting in time off work or even hospital treatment. So it’s important we all take care, watch out for and report any potential hazards that could cause a slip, trip or fall.
You can help prevent slips, trips and falls by following these simple steps; 1. Have a good attitude towards health and safety; we all have a legal responsible and duty of care to ourselves and others. 2. Be vigilant and active in improving the health and safety within your workplace by reporting any potential hazards immediately. 3. Wear sensible shoes, with a solid non-slip sole.
Some of the common causes are; • Inappropriate footwear • Wet floors • Objects being left in walkways • Weather conditions • Poor lighting • Trailing cables • People
172
4. Practise good housekeeping; keep walkways clear, free from rubbish and obstructions.
9. Don’t rush about, take care and walk sensibly, especially whilst carrying objects. 10. Take extra case on staircases, don’t run or use mobiles etc as this will increase your risk of falling. 11. Don’t carry too much; this can obstruct your visibility of where you are walking. 12. Lighting should be adequate enough for you to see what you’re doing and where you’re going. Report any faulty lights immediately. 13. In snow/ice, walk on pathways that have been gritted, report any ungritted or dangerous pathways pathways immediately. 14. Pay attention to what you are doing, and where you are walking!
If you see a potential hazard report it, don’t just walk by, you have a responsibility to yourself and others.
5. Don’t allow cables to trail across areas where people may walk; use cable tidies, covers and mats. And warning signs where necessary. 6. If you spills something, clean it up immediately and display wet floor/ hazard signs to warn others. 7. Whilst cleaning, effect cleaning, wet floor, trailing cable signs to warn others to take care. 8. Watch out for weather conditions, take extra care in wet, icy and snowy weather; wear shoes with a good grip on the sole.

FAHAD JAMSHAID RESPONSE OFFICER
Back in 2018 I got called for jury service at Snaresbrook Crown Court. I went in thinking it was just a civic duty. I came out knowing I had to study law. It felt like a mad idea at the time. I was working full time and life was already busy. But in 2021 I enrolled on a part time LLB at the University of Buckingham. Balancing shifts with lectures was tough. Getting diagnosed with dyslexia halfway through made it even harder. There were definitely moments where I nearly packed it all in. What kept me going was the people around me. I want to say a genuine thank you to CIS management and especially to my line manager John Sephton. The flexibility John gave me with my working pattern wasn’t just helpful. It was the reason I could stay in the game. He made it possible to show up for work and still keep up with my studies without one suffering for the other. I have now officially graduated. It took longer than I planned and it was harder than I expected but it is the best thing I have ever done. If my story shows anyone else on the team one thing I hope it is this. You do not need to have it all figured out. You just need to start and find the right people to support you along the way. 180
