As I approach 20 years at CIS, I can’t help but feel incredibly proud of what our people have achieved. We are now number six in turnover, and while we may be the smallest of the big companies, that is exactly where our strength lies. Our ability to deliver truly personal service at scale is what sets us apart, and it’s something we do better than anyone. This edition also recognises our leadership in quality. At this month’s Security and Fire Excellence Awards, we were proud to be named ‘Security Guarding Company of the Year’, ‘Industry Choice Security Guarding Company’, and ‘Security Diversity and Inclusion Champion’. Being recognised by both judges and our peers is a powerful endorsement of the standards we set, and of the inclusive culture that continues to lead the way across our industry.
A few words from Neill Catton, CEO
For many years, CIS has been very much under the radar, but now is the time for us to be proud of the recognition we are earning. Our culture remains at the heart of who we are, and it has only grown stronger. Our learning and development results are more impressive than they were even a year ago, our technical solutions are now being deployed in world-leading buildings, and our depth of account management and subject-matter expertise is second to none. I meet so many colleagues who are genuinely invigorated by these achievements, and that energy is something we must continue to build on as we maintain our momentum and look ahead to what the future holds. The last 20 years have been incredible, and I truly believe the next 20 will be even better. I look forward to every colleague sharing in the continued success of our outstanding company. Have a safe and enjoyable Christmas and I wish everyone a prosperous and ambitious 2026!

AWARENESS OF THREAT Effective security is not defined solely by physical measures or visible presence, but by the awareness, engagement, and understanding of hostile intent. The following explores the critical role of situational awareness, baseline behaviour recognition, and proactive engagement in identifying and deterring threats before incidents occur. By recognising behavioural indicators, maintaining professional curiosity, and applying confident customer-focused interaction, security professionals can influence hostile decision-making, reduce risk, and protect environments more effectively through early detection and prevention rather than reaction. The level of awareness of security personnel can have a significant effect on those individuals (hostiles) that have negative intentions to the environments that we protect. Our awareness and perceived awareness massively impact the perception of risk from these hostile actors. Having security guards onsite may mitigate the chances of a potential attack, but this embedded response is no guarantee that potential hostiles will be deterred or stopped.
Where breaches have occurred, in most cases there are security measures in place, security personnel, CCTV and physical measures etc. however, security professionals can also focus on the events that occur before potential incidents. For example, people who intend to commit violence often give themselves away by their physical appearance or behaviour, stance, posture, telegraphing movements etc. The same is applied to those intent on committing other types of unwanted or criminal behaviour. This goes from ASB all the way through to Hostile reconnaissance. It is vital to understand what behaviour is normal for any environment, otherwise known as baseline behaviour, by engaging people with good customer service, professional engagement and simple hospitality principles, a security officer is more likely to recognise unusually behaviour. It will also have the hostile on added alert because of the attention directed towards them. This hostile mindset changes how people behave. Ultimately, enhanced awareness allows security to implement methods that may deter potential hostiles. A security officer’s situational awareness is critical. Early detection and identifying behaviours that are detrimental to the areas under security protection must never be underestimated. This will enable officers to respond more quickly and help others by providing instructions that can mitigate reaches. By observing physical and behavioural cues, acting upon concerns, and a good confident engagement

HOSTILE INDICATORS
Overfamiliarity in any situation is dangerous, it can be down to inherent bad practice, laziness, and fatigue. Effective security requires a certain level of natural

and possibly thwart attacks. These signs can include movement patterns, carried

questions. These in isolation do not automatically indicate danger, because they can be consistent with perfectly innocent scenarios, such as confusion, or genuine enquiries. Training and security awareness is only one aspect in dealing with this type of behaviour. It’s important to remember that direct threats can elicit the fight-or-flight response. Situational awareness is something that will naturally occur, although, instinctual responses will be made (and sometimes in error). Post incident briefings will allow for valuable opportunity for lessons learned. If an individual’s behaviour changes outside of the normal in that given environment, its essential that the appropriate direct questioning be observed and applied. This will mean asking directed questions, in a professional manner to illicit the reasons a person is there, what they need or whom they are seeing. When challenged directly, outside of extreme professionals, opportunists will not be prepared for this, and responses will not be natural and reliable. Its far harder to think on the spot to perpetuate a lie than describe truthful responses. Ultimately, this type of professional engagement is to determine if there is a direct threat, or possible hostile reconnaissance and in its simplest form demonstrate that the security professionals are alert, engaged and in control of their area.
Customer service and proactive engagement is a priority. Security should view each person as a customer, not a suspect, until a significant change in behaviours or attitude then identifies them as a threat. It’s important to also recognise that in certain environments, this approach to the clients can assist security in their role. In this case, the CIS “Feet to Greet or Meet to Greet” establishes this professional guideline. It’s a reminder of professional security presence and appropriate engagement.
72
72
73
THE POWER OF HELLO This has huge impact, for those legitimately in your area of responsibility it demonstrates good service, professional engagement, and instils confidence for those you are dealing with. For the hostile, the mindset is different from the moment they enter the area with security. As a security professional, your engagement will set alarm bells, “why did security approach me? what made them speak to me? these guys are switched on!” etc. It can be as simple as looking alert, good posture and body language from the security as they patrol or control their areas. Remember, the hostiles’ prime objective is not to get caught. This goes from the lowest opportunistic recce for petty crime all the way to full hostile reconnaissance of an area, principles are the same. Of course, in the real world, we will have to encounter and deal with occasional negative reactions and individuals who refuse to cooperate, even if they are there for legitimate reasons. Difficult clients and customers are part of the overall delivery of service. Appropriate measures should be taken to deal with such persons, including asking for another officer to help and continuing to question the individual.
DILUTION OF SECURITY, ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBITIES, REDUCES AWARENESS. Service delivery, particularly post COVID has also led to changes in how the security is being delivered. The acceptance of additional roles, facilities check, maintenance reports and other elements is detracting from what the core role really needs to be. In some cases, patrolling officers are carrying out a facility check and if they notice it, some security as well. This needs to change and be reversed. Security is the prime goal and if any facility or maintenance issues are noticed then these can be reported. There is a huge benefit to ensuring that awareness across multi-services makes for safer and more effective responses. However, each discipline needs to prioritise its own specialisms. Otherwise, these diluted responses will lead to a fertile environment for those with negative intentions. In conclusion, threat awareness is the foundation of effective security. While physical measures and staffing are important, it is the alert, engaged, and professionally curious security officer who makes the greatest difference. By understanding baseline behaviour, recognising hostile indicators, and applying confident, customer-focused engagement, potential threats can be identified and disrupted early. Maintaining focus on core security responsibilities, avoiding complacency, and prioritising situational awareness ensures environments remain less attractive to those with hostile intent. Ultimately, proactive awareness and presence deter, detect, and reduce risk long before incidents occur.

Public Safety Community Awareness Day in collaboration with Westminster Council. Last month, CIS were proud to collaborate with West One, British Land, Safe Haven and the City of Westminster for a Security Awareness event. West One, as an accredited Safe Haven, plays an important role in making Westminster a safer place. The event highlighted how Safe Havens provide comfort and support to those who may feel vulnerable or simply need a secure space to pause before continuing their journey. It also helped build community understanding and reinforced our collective commitment to keeping the area safe for everyone.

UNITED STATES CHIEFS OF POLICE VISIT As part of our strategic partnership with the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police (NJSACOP), we recently hosted a cohort at the Crown Estate. This engagement provided an opportunity to discuss risk management and intelligence-led approaches to safety and security in both the United States and the United Kingdom. Through this collaboration, we can strengthen information sharing, operational preparedness, and professional development by leveraging proven international best practices and a broader global threat perspective in an increasingly interconnected world. Building on another successful and productive visit that highlighted the value of a partnership approach, CIS Security looks forward to continuing its collaboration with NJSACOP in support of our shared commitment to safeguarding the communities we serve.

REMEMBRANCE DAY On the 11th November, CIS joined the nation in remembrance, honouring the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of those who have served and continue to serve our country. At 11 am, our teams across the business came together to observe the two-minute silence, reflecting on the bravery and selflessness of the Armed Forces, both past and present. Many within the CIS family have a personal connection to the Armed Forces, and we take great pride in supporting veterans, reservists, and their families as part of our wider community.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all our teams on the ground who volunteered their time and efforts in raising funds for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. Your dedication and compassion truly embody the spirit of remembrance and community that this day represents. Their values of commitment, integrity, and respect continue to inspire the work we do every day.
We remember them. We honour them. We will never forget.

FEMALE SAFETY SEMINAR Last month, CIS was pleased to collaborate with London Borough of Hackney (LBH) to deliver a Female Safety and Behavioural Awareness Seminar. The session was led by our in-house Behavioural Detection & Training Specialist, Simon Riley, who focused on important, practical ways to stay aware and confident in different environments. Simon stated: “It is and was a huge privilege to deliver this safety seminar. To have access to such a varied and knowledgeable audience from the Hackney Council ‘team’, was an opportunity not to be wasted. I am very passionate about the safety of our community and how we protect, give confidence and develop skill-set. This was a huge team effort, as community safety should always be….and to also get the opportunity to run a ‘live’ walk and talk - this was a first and highlight of my working week. Tracy Spallin on behalf of LBH shares; “It was brilliant to see so many women from different departments across the Council join the safety seminar run by CIS. Thankfully incidents affecting our staff are rare, but I know those who attended really valued the practical advice to help keep them safe.” It was a valuable and engaging discussion with great input from everyone who attended. A big thank you to Simon for leading the day and to Michael D, Ray Marskell MSyl, and London Borough of Hackney for supporting this important initiative.

COLLABORATION Earlier this month the Metropolitan Police’s Working at Height Team carried out a training exercise at The Leadenhall Building. Police officers worked closely with The Leadenhall Building’s on-site security team from CIS, to test and refine responses to a series of realistic scenarios. These included dealing with protestors gaining access to the roof, individuals abseiling down the building with a small banner, and responding to a simulated medical emergency at height. This was the first time the Metropolitan Police’s rope team had been able to train on a building of this scale, offering a unique opportunity to rehearse procedures in a real-world environment. The exercise provided valuable learning for all involved and reinforced the importance of close partnership between the police, property management, and private sector security teams in keeping the city safe. Head of Security at The Leadenhall Building, Joe Easterbrook, stated: “We were delighted to host the Metropolitan Police Working at Height Team for this exercise. The scale of The Leadenhall Building offered a rare and challenging environment for the officers to operate in, and the collaboration between our teams was exceptional. Exercises like this not only strengthen our joint preparedness but also act as a visible deterrent to any potential hostile activity.”
This exercise highlights the power of collaboration and preparedness, ensuring that both public and private teams are ready to respond effectively to any incident at height. Well done to everyone involved! 92 92

AI FOR PROACTIVE CCTV MONITORING AI for CCTV refers to using artificial intelligence to enhance traditional security camera systems. Instead of simply recording video, AI-powered CCTV can analyse what the camera sees in real time and automatically detect events, patterns, or threats.
What AI Can Do in CCTV? FEATURE
PURPOSE
Motion detection
Identify movement without manual monitoring
Facial recognition
Recognise or match faces (subject to privacy laws)
Object detection
Identify people, vehicles, bags, etc.
Intrusion detection
Alert when someone enters restricted areas
Behaviour analysis
Spot suspicious actions (loitering, running, fights)
f Accurate (fewer false alarms
License plate recognition (ANPR)

ARE NEW WORKERS MORE LIKELY TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT? “Statistics show that workers are just as likely to have an accident during the first six months as for the remainder of their working lives. Why is this, and what can you do to ensure that they don’t become a statistic in your workplace.”
NEW STARTERS With the festive period upon us, you may find that you’ve had to increase your staffing levels to cope with extra deliveries, longer opening hours, etc. Some of these workers may be in a temporary role but will still be facing the same risks as permanent members of staff. This increased risk is because of: f Lack of experience of a new industry or workplace.
Further
f Unfamiliarity with the job and work environment.
information
f Not wanting to raise concerns or knowing how to.
Health and Safety
f Eagerness to impress workmates and managers.
Induction Checklist can be found on the HUB Health and safety induction form.
New workers may not recognise hazards as a potential source of danger and may not un-derstand “obvious” rules for equipment use. They will not be familiar with site layout, es-pecially where site hazards may change from day to day.
GUIDANCE The HSE recommends steps to protect those new to a job. These are all based around a common-sense approach and cost little to implement, apart from time. Firstly, ensure literacy and numeracy levels, general health and physical capability match your requirements.
STUART BATEMAN SHEQ MANAGER
144
145
INDUCTION Secondly, an induction to set out your expectations of safety and site rules sends a strong message to them about your attitude to health and safety. Tip. Use our Health and Safety Induction Checklist for all new starters (see Further information). Completed documents can be used in an investigation to show you’ve conducted them appropriately. Tip. If you have “rules of thumb” in the workplace, document these in your induction and written systems of work to avoid confusion.
CONTROL MEASURES Make sure that new staff understand and use the control measures provided, e.g. correct equipment, and procedures such as how to call a first aider, report an incident, etc. Provide critical safety and emergency information in an easy to understand format. Finally, provide adequate supervision and check their understanding of the safe way of undertaking 146 146
their duties. 147

Pay attention and try to avoid unnecessary distractions walk with purpose!
LISTEN TO YOUR GUT
DON’T SHOUT FOR HELP SHOUT FIRE
RIDE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TRAIN
If something feels off - it usually is. Move away - go to a safe area or a crowded place - Alert a member of the public that you may need help.
The logic is that people around you will react to ‘fire’ more so than ‘help’ due to ‘Bystander Apathy’ and the fear of getting involved.
If possible, board from more crowded platforms to avoid being alone. Safety in numbers.

Complete the form once for every site you work on
•
Use this link to access the form (CLICK HERE)

Once submitted, your completed form will be automatically saved on The Hub
Please make sure this is done as soon as possible when attending a new site. Thank you for your cooperation and for helping keep everyone safe.
