Ideal Territory

Prologue

The moment you identified yourself in the mirror, you saw yourself as an isolated figure, different from the rest of the world. You set yourself apart as an image, emerging as necessarily separate from the “real world around you. You registered yourself as a distinct concept. You appeared as a figure and all the rest, ground. You experienced all this instantaneously. Your reaction surfaced immediately as you playfully engaged your own reflection. It took some time before you arrived at an understanding of the problems and possibilities already latent in this, your first repetition of this foundational, originary, formal moment.

Together, this exhibition and catalogue address the work of nine artists with disparate working methods who,

Introduction

together, passed through the University of California, Irvine’s MFA program in Art between the years of 2011 and 2014. As classmates at UC Irvine, little appeared to be shared in common among our work. Thus the appearance of oblique references to territory, distributed throughout these works, comes as a surprise. This thread surfaced through the sequence of solo exhibitions in the University’s galleries that mark the culmination of each artist’s thesis work. Although figure/ground relationships are not the primary concerns of these artists, and despite the fundamental differences between the artists’ goals, when these works engage ground as a concept, they do so through the conceptualization of ground as an idea necessarily marked by separation. We find that ground is never a universal term applicable everywhere. Whatever ground may be claimed as ours is a particular one, always belonging to someone or something. These separate grounds, not a single entity held in common, announce themselves as such, consequently begging a range of questions: Whose territory? How do we describe the concepts that dominate locally? Through which forms do these concepts present themselves? Though dissimilar interests drive each of the nine participating artists, the ground, its presence as a representation of territorial ideality, remains ever present. Through this presence, we receive a constellated image of that which is shared in common as precisely that which forms the foundation of separation.

Artists

Jenn Berger

Sean Cassidy

Drawing from her own imaginings, Jenn Berger assumes and risks that her private thoughts occur to others. Her research subjects include animals, strangers, family members (both dead and alive) and love interests; she interacts and collaborates with them both in person and virtually. Positioning herself as the perpetrator, she acknowledges her complicity in the scenarios she conjures, as well as makes a case for first-hand experience as a source of knowledge. Born in Columbia, Maryland, Jenn Berger currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She completed an MFA in art at UC Irvine, a BFA in fine art media at Art Center College of Design and a BA in philosophy and art history at Tulane University. Sean Cassidy received his MFA from the University of California Irvine in 2014 and holds a BFA from Art Center College of Design. He lives and works in Los Angeles. He recently had shingles.

Israeli-American artist Michael Moshe Dahan spent the first decade of his career as a Hollywood film producer

45

Michael Moshe Dahan

and production executive before coming to image and film-making as a conceptual practice. He has shown at compact/space Gallery, an LA/Berlin artist collective, the Irvine Fine Arts Center, the University Art Gallery at UC Irvine, and the Wight Invitational at UCLA. His short film “Two Points of Failure” had its international premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) in January 2014, before screening at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival, and the Edinburgh International Film Festival. It was previously presented at the MAK Center for Art and Architecture in Los Angeles as part of “Specters of Godard” screening and panel in November of 2013. Dahan graduated with an MFA in art with an emphasis in critical theory from the University of California, Irvine, and beginning this fall, will be a PhD candidate at UCSD and UC Irvine’s Joint Doctoral Program in Drama and Theatre. He is a fellow at the Claire Trevor School of the Arts, as well as a recipient of the Medici Circle and University of California Institute for Research in the Arts grants.

Heather Delaney is a New York/ Los Angeles -based artist. She has exhibited in New York and California and is a 2014 MFA graduate from the University of California,

46

Heather Delaney

Irvine. This past year, her work was included in two international exhibitions for performance and video: Rapid Pulse’s International Performance Art Festival in Chicago, IL and NurtureArt in Brooklyn, NY. She was also included in the New Wight Invitational at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her work explores the intersection of video, performance, and sculpture. Her most recent work theorizes a new approach to subjectivity through a series of performative sculptural encounters that deal with relationality, desire, weight, production and consumption.

Shaun Garren

Shaun Garren was born in Los Angeles where he currently lives and works. His practice is based in the implications of the pragmatic decision making process involved in the production of catalog and instructional imagery. Shaun received his BA from the University of California Los Angeles and his MFA from the University of California Irvine.

Rochele Gomez lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She received her MFA from the University of California, Irvine. This summer she will attend the Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts.

47

Rochele Gomez

Elan Greenwald

Elan Greenwald lives and works in Irvine, California. He received his MFA in Art with an emphasis in Critical Theory from the University of California, Irvine. He received his AB from Harvard University with a concentration in Visual and Environmental Studies. This year, he will be a fellow at the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln.

Born in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1987, Daniel Hawkins studied art at UCLA, Yale’s Norfolk Summer School of Art, and UC Irvine, and exhibited his work at Las Cienegas Projects, PØST Gallery, The Beacon Arts Building, and numerous other venues. He is a member

of the experimental musical group F with Marnie Weber and Doug Harvey, and recently topped the Belgian New Music charts as Kenneth Friendliness (with Mannlicher Carcano), performing his original song “Juli Carson Hates Relational Aesthetics (and so do I). His Desert Lighthouse project has been supported in part by The Center for Land Use Interpretation and the Center for Cultural Innovation.

Isabel Theselius is an artist born 1986 in Lund, Sweden, currently based in Los Angeles, California. She recently completed her MFA studies in Art at University of California Irvine, in 2014 and in 2011 she received her BFA at Valand School of Fine Arts in Guthenburg, Sweden.

49

Isabel Theselius

In her work Theselius does not follow an easily traceable pattern. She zigzags through ideas, from piece to piece, approaching each circumstance with a different set of responses. She tries to inhabit whatever voice/style/ material/technique is necessary for the outcome of her pieces. At a first glance the differences in her work might seem disparate and unrelated, but at a closer look the pieces simultaneously “talk” to each other and reveal a kind of nonlinear correlation. In her most recent installation, Hej Angels!, Theselius has taken on grief as her subject matter, through video works and a painted car created in response to the Swedish artist Anders BOM Lindén who passed away from pancreatic cancer in the summer of 2012. The work is in dialogue not only with BOM as artist, but as her close friend and her mother’s boyfriend as well. Theselius filters BOM’s fascination with western movie cowboys, American motorcycles and cars, and life in America through her own vision, working from the site that BOM dreamed of but never actually visited. Hej Angels! (Hey Angels!) is a slip of the tongue expression that BOM used when referring to the motorcycle club Hells Angels.

Ideal Territory Curated by Elan Greenwald July 26 - August 16, 2014 Opening Reception: July 26, 6-8pm The moment you identified yourself in the mirror, you saw yourself as an isolated figure, different from the rest of the world. You set yourself apart as an image, emerging as necessarily separate from the “real” world around you. You registered yourself as a distinct concept. You appeared as a figure and all the rest, ground. Ideal Territory brings together a group of works that obliquely consider territory itself—as domain, history, narrative, and site of comparison. Sliding between conceptual borders that distinguish these properties, the assembled gestures find themselves decisively within a territory of ideals. As if by accident—though assuredly no accident—the ground returns as a seeping substance into these works. Together they form a constellated image of that which is shared in common as precisely that which forms the foundation of separation. Made possible by the generous support of Cirrus Gallery, Ideal Territory features new work by recent UC Irvine MFA graduates Jenn Berger, Sean Cassidy, Michael Moshe Dahan, Heather Delaney, Shaun Garren, Rochele Gomez, Elan Greenwald, Daniel Hawkins, and Isabel Theselius. A catalog will accompany the exhibition.
