EDITOR FOREWORDS

Welcome to the latest issue of The Circuit. The premier magazine for those serving in the protection industry. Being employed as a protector, we can become so focused on protecting others that we sometimes forget about ourselves. I am not only talking physically. As a protector, we must not only protect our principal's physical well-being but protect them from potential embarrassment and project their image.

With so much content and noise online, it's easy to forget that anything posted on social media will remain viewable to the public for the foreseeable future. That means you've just got to stop and think before you post and try to avoid putting your 'digital foot in it'; otherwise you'll spend a lot of time doing damage mitigation!

While we may be extremely good at providing this service we also need to remember to project a professional image in our personal lives. This can be easy to forget when finishing work late then heading out for a few beers. Social media has been the downfall of many. Pictures from the previous night's antics which seemed innocent enough at the time may be looked upon less favourably by our clients/ principals in the cold light of day. We all need to let our hair down every now and again, but a prudent operator would keep this offline and remain discreet.

Your social media output can have a detrimental effect on your career, your relationships, and your reputation. I follow the rule of - if you have to ask 'should I be posting this' then you probably ought not to. As humans, we come preloaded with intuition, and we should listen to our gut-feeling more often, it often knows more than we do, much of the time!

It is not just the posting of images/ videos on social media, but we must be careful when getting drawn into debates, particularly those on subjects that we feel especially passionate about. I see a lot of this from people whom I know to be consummate professionals yet they let themselves get drawn into heated discussions in view of everyone. These discussions don't always show them in a positive light!

However, one thing that I do like to see our readers posting online is feedback for this publication, good or bad. Obviously, we appreciate positive reviews, but we're a thick-skinned bunch here at the Circuit, and we can handle a little criticism too! Leaving feedback provides good social proof for others, and it helps the publication reach more people. So, If you enjoy reading this issue, then please shout about it and let others know what they're missing out on, it's hugely appreciated.

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 43

It’s that time once again to unveil the latest issue of The Circuit Magazine, the longest running magazine devoted to Close Protection, produced by the community, for the community. As I write this I just completed a nationwide Tour with a major recording artist running 2 Countries and 63 days. The best part about it was that the Detail was comprised of 12 individuals who had one underlining thread running though all of them: They all had a love for our profession and a compulsion to not only do the job, but do the job well. Like most things in life, you can tell the things people enjoy, and the things they simply tolerate. While the VIP Protection business might be “glamorous” compared to some, when you’ve spent any significant time in it, you see through that luster. For every star studded cocktail party or yacht trip, there are three times as many halls and walls assignments or “hurry up and wait’s,” stationed in the car all

day in the hot summer sun. But if, once the shiny newness wears off, you still find yourself enjoying the hell out of your career way more than complaining about it, then this must be your calling. Think about it, it takes a special man or woman to put the needs of others before him or herself time and again, and that is exactly what we do. We are special, we are exceptional, we are professional, and it’s not an ego stroke to remind ourselves of that often. Which brings me to the point of this months foreword: Exceptional individuals need an exceptional magazine, and rest assured, we aim to deliver! Elijah Shaw US Editor

COUNTERAMBUSH TACTICS FOR SECURITY PROFESSIONALS Part two As protective officers, we try to use preventative strategies to protect our clients based on the tenets of Detect, Deter, and Defend.

The first two of these tenets involve soft skills which are sometimes referred to as Protective Intelligence (PI) and include situational and tactical awareness skills (route analysis and surveillance detection). The third tenet, Defend, requires hard skills such as the use of firearms and

security driving. These hard skills may be required if we were unable to prevent or avoid an attack, and we end up in a situation where we have to survive an ambush. Continuing where we left off in Part One, we will finish covering some of the soft skills involved in Protective Intelligence and

We must be aware of our environment, looking ahead, “anticipating” problems or threats, and mentally preparing for a potential threat by playing the “What If” game

11

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 43 then move on to discuss the hard skills. Counter-Surveillance vs Surveillance Detection In the 90’s, several elements within the US government began to deploy specialized units to specifically augment the Surveillance Detection (SD) activities performed by the protective details. These units were called Counter Surveillance (CS) Teams. There are some subtle differences between SD and CS. In the intelligence community, SD is conducted by the target of the surveillance while CS is done by other elements that are not part of the protectee’s security package. Additionally, CS may be used to actively investigate the surveillance activity. While most protective teams do not have the luxury of having a dedicated CS team there are low budget methods which provide a similar effect. One method is to assign one or more protective personnel to conduct targeted sweeps through the neighborhood where the protectee lives, through likely ambush sites, and near all established chokepoints. These activities are done separately from any of the

COUNTER-AMBUSH TACTICS thereby allowing us to increase our accuracy. When we observe any specific suspicious activity in these critical areas we need to investigate using in-house capabilities as well as any law enforcement liaison. Of course, the CS team members and advance elements preceding the protectees motorcade also When conducting both need to be looking for SD and CS type sweeps potential deployed attack we are looking for signs teams in all likely ambush of surveillance which are and chokepoint locations. part of the attack cycle. These two elements give By honing-in on specific us the best chance to areas where surveillance avoid an ambush that has is likely to be conducted, we can reduce the number moved to the final stages of areas we need to cover, of the attack cycle. protectee’s movements. When we do these types of sweeps prior to the protectee’s movements we call them “Advances” and any surveillance detection done under these circumstances falls under the SD category. Advances are especially useful for detecting deployed attack teams.

13

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 43 Attack Recognition We need to use the same skills we use when we are performing surveillance detection when we are looking for signs of a possible attack. We must be aware of our environment, looking ahead, “anticipating” problems or threats, and mentally preparing for a potential threat by playing the “What If” game (i.e. mentally asking ourselves what we will do if we see a situation developing). We also need to be ready to increase our awareness level if we notice anything unusual. This is especially critical in chokepoints and potential ambush sites.

Specifically, we are looking for unusual interest in our movements (on foot or in a vehicle), anything which slows or stops our movement, any unusual activities by pedestrians or vehicles, and of course, we are looking for any visibly deployed attack elements and/or vehicles. In a nutshell, we are looking for anything which causes us to feel that “something is wrong”. If anything unusual is observed, we must immediately raise our awareness level, find the problem, and mentally prepare to react to the environment by thinking of possible options.

14

COUNTER-AMBUSH TACTICS Countering the Surprise Factor The assailants do everything they can to capitalize on the element of surprise as this factor directly contributes to their ability to execute their attack with maximum effect. If we did not/ could not avoid the attack by recognizing the preattack surveillance/ ambush team deployment phase we must try to avoid the “surprise factor” (attack recognition) and implement our preplanned evasive action. If we “anticipate” and mentally prepare we will not be surprised and therefore we will not go into “SHOCK” if an attack occurs. Shock is a condition when the body reacts to great stress, releasing chemicals into the muscles at such a rate that the muscles are overloaded, interfering with their normal functioning, to include possibly freezing up. This reaction can last three seconds or more. Shock can dramatically affect our ability to think and to act in an emergency, when three seconds may be all the time we have to act and save ourselves. Avoiding being surprised directly affects the lethality

15

of the attack and increases survivability by the target. Some statistics cited say that the assailant has a 91% chance for success if the target (and the security elements) are caught by surprise. This percentage is dramatically reduced if the target/security element recognizes the attack any time prior to the moment that the target reaches the planned attack site – the “X”. If victims have had less than a 10 percent chance of survival when they are caught by surprise on the “X”, then a key element in our defense is to avoid being “Surprised” by an attack. We have to recognize the attack before it happens. This pre-attack recognition factor cannot be overemphasized. Evasive Action and Immediate Action Drills In an ambush situation, the attacker has the following advantages: the element of “surprise”, knowledge of the area/ terrain, greater speed and mobility, and they can easily establish total command and control of the ambush site. Security elements must understand the potential Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs) of the assailants, predict the

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 43 likely attack sites, and develop attack reaction tactics, both evasive and defensive. Historically, in assassination type attacks, 85% of these attacks occur near the residence and in or near the vehicle. If we can anticipate an attack, even for a few seconds, we have a much better chance to execute specific pre-planned maneuvers to defeat an ambush. Immediate Action Drills: For security professionals, the immediate action drills we do in training prepare us to react to a potential attack when we are caught near or on the “X”. Security teams should have planned and rehearsed these procedures until they can be done without hesitation. This includes observation and initiation

(“Contact Right” or “Gun Left”) and then the appropriate tactical response by the security elements (especially the driver if the situation involves an ambush on the motorcade). Depending upon the terrain, the type of ambush, the vehicles being used, etc. the specific immediate actions may differ but, in general, the best reaction to a threat is to move (preferably away from the attackers). Any efforts which result in our movement off of, and away from, the “X” is better than sitting still. By moving we gain options and increase our survivability. Almost every study on ambushes have shown that any actions that gets the targets off the “X” (the attack site)

16

COUNTER-AMBUSH TACTICS

As security professionals, we must use all the tools available to protect our clients. increases the targets chances for survival. We also need to ensure our actions/responses to an attack does not lead us into a secondary ambush. As security professionals, we spend a lot of time with our protectees in or near our vehicles and, as noted, a significant amount of attacks on protectees occur around the vehicle. We stand a much better chance of survival if we take any type of action during an attack. While there are a wide variety of actions we can take during an ambush, we can still be highly effective if we reduce this aspect down to one word – “MOVE”! CONCLUSION As security professionals, we must use all the tools available to protect our clients. We need to understand and counter the assailant’s attack

cycle. “Protective Intelligence” activities and strategies (route planning and analysis, surveillance detection and counter-surveillance) will help us to recognize hostile surveillance and potential danger areas. Additionally, we must prepare for the worst-case scenario – an ambush. By using pre-attack recognition skills, we avoid being caught by surprise, so we can use our hard skills (firearms and security driving) and implement our Immediate Action tactics (“MOVE”). Preparation is critical. The US Secret Service lives by the mantra that the overall protective capability of a protection detail never exceeds the level of preparation conducted by the security elements. In other words, if you fail to prepare, prepare to fail!

THE FALLACY OF THE INDIVIDUAL BODYGUARD (IBG) A dozen years ago, I was having coffee with the in-country manager of a blue-chip security firm operating in Afghanistan.

It was the height of British military and government involvement in the illfated NATO-led effort to crush the Taliban, and Kabul was inundated with people needing close protection services. From diplomats attempting to build infrastructure and civil institutions to corporate honchos sniffing out potential business opportunities, there was no shortage of clients for security firms to pitch. As my conversation with the in-country manager progressed, I broached the subject of IBGs – individual bodyguards. I told him in no uncertain terms that the idea of having an

individual effectively carry out the functions of a close protection team was utter and absolute flannel. His response: “Maybe, Bob. But it brings in the dollars!” Today, the IBG business is still going strong. This resilience can be credited in part to CP clients who don’t know how to assess the quality of the service they’re purchasing. They may have seen an overt “bodyguard” standing behind (or in front of, or next to) a Hollywood A-lister or VIP and think if that’s how the rich and famous do it, it’s good enough for me. Because, to the poorly informed client, a “bodyguard” is

18

19

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 43 someone who is paid to protect them by reacting quickly and effectively to ferry them to safety when a threat presents itself. But as readers of this magazine know, there is no such thing as an “individual” bodyguard who can effectively react to a threat and move a client out of harm’s way simultaneously. All an individual can do effectively is proactively advise a client on how to minimise risks and when an incident arises – make a snap decision (hopefully born from serious training and experience) and choose between moving a client to cover or addressing the threat directly. When viewed through a lens of best practice, it’s pretty clear that a close protection professional looking after a client, unilaterally, is no “bodyguard”; he or she is a security advisor. And the distinction is crucial for both contractors and clients to understand if best practice is to prevail.

There is no such thing as an “individual” bodyguard who can effectively react to a threat and move a client out of harm’s way simultaneously.

Unfortunately, there is no external regulation of the private security industry, so, for now, the foxes are minding the client brochures. If an unimpeachable

20

INDIVIDUAL BODYGUARD regulatory body were to set and enforce criteria and standards, it could ensure that all descriptions of close protection services explain what does and does not constitute a “bodyguard”. That way, everyone would understand that an individual is only a “bodyguard” if they are operating as part of a team, constituting a minimum of two security professionals (aka buddy pairing). From that minimum, teams scale up all the way to a full-blown Presidential-style detail comprised of dozens of bodyguards complimented by a covert surveillance

21

team (some years ago, I built and managed a large CP team comprised of bodyguards and surveillance professionals for a high profile European client). When we consider different threat scenarios, it’s apparent that a bodyguard can only be called such when operating in tandem with at least one other security professional. Scenario A: Someone opens fire on a client. When a live fire situation goes down for real, a lone security advisor can only carry out one action at a time and must decide

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 43 whether to get the client immediately into cover from fire and view or to return fire toward the attacker. They cannot do both at once (despite what Hollywood action heroes pull off on the big screen). This is why whenever I’ve worked alone as a security advisor to a client or a small grouping of clients (such as a news team in a hostile environment), I’ve always explained to them why they should never consider me a “bodyguard”. Scenario B: A client group comprised of an A-lister, their spouse and small child, is walking down a street when an attacker attempts a machete attack. It’s pretty easy to see how an individual security professional would have to make some tough choices

in a split second. Do they move the most vulnerable of the group – the small child-to safety? Do they protect the A-lister first or the spouse? Do they deal directly with the threat? The point is, a lone security advisor can only execute one response at a time, and it needs to be immediate. Scenario C: A client group comprised of a news team is filming in a vulnerable location when their primary vehicle breaks down under live fire. As any seasoned security professional knows, you should never move a client from point A to point B in an insecure area without a backup vehicle. This way, if the primary vehicle breaks down, the client or clients can be cross-

INDIVIDUAL BODYGUARD

decked to the back-up. A lone security advisor can’t move the clients and cover them with return fire at the same time. That takes a minimum of two security advisors who together can comprise a bodyguard team. These are just some examples to help set the scene, but they hopefully drive home the point that the label “individual bodyguard” is not for real. A security

professional looking after a client, unilaterally, is a security advisor. If they work in tandem with a second advisor and they can operate in the close protection role, then it would become legitimate to call them “bodyguards”. It may sound like splitting hairs, or just a play on words, but as readers of this magazine know, attention to detail can make the difference between life or death.

Executive Protection Travel Pack: Things to Consider

As is common with us all, we love our gear and we can't get enough. A common discussion in our Facebook group, The Protective Security Group, is travel gear and equipment. While not meant to be a comprehensive or ‘cookie-cutter' list, below I share a typical packing of my ‘go-bag' which I hope you all find useful; at least as a good baseline to add/subtract from for your travel needs.

When profile is not a consideration, my new favorite bag is the GoRuck GR1. This bag is incredibly durable, well thought out, excellently structured and top quality. The pouches are well placed with durable zippers. The back panel is perfect for a ballistic plate and the

Keeping ahead of the game – the International Security Expo.

Its colourless, odourless, undetectable outside the most sophisticated laboratories and only needs the tiniest drop on your skin before a process that will see you feeling odd, your eyes and nose become runny, you get a dull headache, you develop a cough, it’s just like a horrible winter cold or flu is descending on you, and quickly, you feel miserable, you are having difficulty focusing and you pupils become restricted. 31

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 43

All of a sudden you have an urge to go to the toilet and now, too late you couldn’t wait. That cough is turning into difficulty breathing, you heart is pounding, you are drowning, everything is swimming around you, you collapse. For those ex-military out there, this description of a threat sends shivers down your spine. During the Cold War the NBC (Nuclear, Biological and Chemical) phase was dreaded and if it were real and you were the individual who ‘volunteered’ to do the sniff test then you had your ATROPINE (a nerve agent antidote) auto-jets handy in case you started to show any of the symptoms of nerve agent

poisoning and have to selfadminister the antidote. The assassination attempt on Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in March in the sleepy English city of Salisbury, must serve as a wakeup call for all of those involved in security, protection, and first responding. The ease by which such a deadly agent could be carried into the country, applied to a door handle and the impact it has had is enormous. This wasn’t an assassination attempt, but this article is not aimed at just describing the Novichok incident, that is a book all by itself, for more detail feel free to visit the blog section of

Training for Tactical Shooting By: Orlando Wilson

State Duma deputy, Sergei Yushenkov, was killed in Moscow, apparently in a contract killing. He had just left his chauffeur-driven car and was walking towards his apartment block in the early evening. He was shot in the back four times by an assassin armed with a silenced Makarov pistol. April 2003, Russia Handguns are meant for close-quarter shooting. Think about it; if someone is going to attack, kidnap or rob you on the street, they are going to be close, within conversational range. Now, look around your home or business and see what the maximum distance is that you would have a clear shot at a criminal or terrorist, for

most this will be less than 10 yards/meters. This places emphasis on close quarter instinctive shooting over precision target shooting. As part of your training practice for long distance shoots (for handguns, this means over 25 yards), you should try hitting targets out to and over 100 yards. This will improve your handgun skills and

36

TRAINING FOR TACTICAL SHOOTING show you your capabilities and limitations, but the emphasis should be on close quarter instinctive shooting. When you have learned to shoot and hit a target safely, and when you can fire consistently aimed shots into a silhouette target at 15 yards, you will be ready to move to more advanced drills. There are two main range stances that I teach for defensive shooting: the isosceles and what can be classed as a modified weaver stance. Again, it is up to you to find out which one works for you. When training people in instinctive shooting, the isosceles stance is usually the easiest for people to learn quickly and produces decent results; this why it’s taught to a lot of law enforcement units. There are pros and cons to both isosceles and the modified weaver stances, try both and see which gives you the best results. In reality, the chances are you won’t have the time or be in a position to get into a formal stance in a hostile shooting incident.

37

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 43 Isosceles Stance In the isosceles stance, you stand square in front of the target, both arms are pushed out in front of the body to form an isosceles triangle; your chest is the base of the triangle, and the arms make the sides with the handgun, in a two-handed grip, at the point of the triangle (see below diagram). Your feet should be shoulder-width apart pointing forward, and your knees slightly bent to form a solid stance. The isosceles is an easy stance to teach people to shoot from and is ideal for most people’s needs.

Many law enforcement agencies favor the isosceles because it is so simple for the reason that when they stand square in front of the target, they get the maximum protection from their body armor. The disadvantage with the isosceles is that it is a rigid stance and does not allow for a great range of movement, which is essential if you believe you will possibly be dealing with professional criminals and skilled attackers. If you are working or living in some developing countries in Latin America, Africa

Place your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart and have your left foot in front, with your right foot at about a 45-degree angle behind your left foot. You should slightly twist your body to the right, so you are side on to the target. Now, with your weapon in your right hand, bring both hands up to the level of your chest. I have seen students who have been taught to always use the sights on their handguns, even at close quarters, and have difficulty getting good results when shooting. IMAGE PROJECTION - It’s a Psychological Advantage

The term 'Image Projection' refers to the tactic of presenting yourself as an Alpha personality in order to discourage a confrontation. In short, dressing like an Alpha personality prompts respect from people (men and women) and makes you look like a hard target (psychologically).

So taking those So now let’s look at why primal values into so many people in the industry don’t always dress consideration, it’s like an Alpha personality, especially when it’s helpful in easy to see why so discouraging confrontations. To be sexually attractive to potential mates within the tribe or group.

Note: Value #1 (to fit-in) is especially important to men because historically we have depended on the other men in the tribe to help hunt for food, or to fight to defend the tribe. So, considering those primal values, it’s easy to see why so many people in the security industry dress to fit-it with other members of their security group. That might mean for example: wearing all black; or dressing in tactical gear. And by doing so, we’re fitting-in to be accepted and thereby gaining the support

That’s a nice idea. But keep in mind that a client generally isn’t interested in your personal styling. They want you to look like you can protect them. And if it’s not apparent to them, then it’s probably not going to be visible to anyone wanting to do them harm.

Alpha personality: • Dress simple, strong, and functional. • Take a minimalist approach with little-to-no decoration. • Highlight your best physical features (shoulders, chest, etc.). • Use dark or solid colours as the foundation of your wardrobe. And depending on your area of speciality, that might mean: Dressing in basic black. Wearing tactical polo and pants, or a polo, slacks and sports jacket. Wearing an open-neck shirt and jacket or a formal business suit, shirt and tie. If you structure your wardrobe carefully, that doesn’t have to be a big investment at all. Several

Some may prefer a smartcasual look (polo shirt and jacket), or a relaxed business approach (open neck shirt and jacket). And some may prefer the look of a business suit, shirt and tie. So structure your wardrobe to be ready for any detail. Footnote: And if you’re ever unsure as to where what you’re wearing is maximising your Image Projection, ask yourself one simple question “Can I see James Bond wearing this in a movie?” It sounds a bit cliché I know, but it’s actually a quick and effective way to assess the psychological effect of what you’re wearing!

DEFINING PROFESSIONALISM By: Robin Barratt

Defining professionalism in the personal protection industry

For many Close Protection Officers, finding work is harder than it has ever been.

Not because there is less work out there, in fact, the opposite is probably true. With global threat levels at an all-time high, there is more work in the security industry now than there ever has been and the security industry is booming, but it's harder to find work because there are now thousands more so-called 'qualified' CPOs chasing after every position. It is a fact that most licensed operators have never

53

actually done a day's close protection work in their lives. At the time of writing this article, there are over 14,000 valid, UK, CP licences. Yes, over fourteen thousand people in the UK currently have a license to operate as a Close Protection Officer. There are probably hundreds of thousands of US bodyguard licenses, and globally... who knows how many Protection Officers there are.

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 43 Before licensing, one protection based position would have probably attracted just ten to fifteen highquality, experienced applicants. Now literally hundreds of people apply for every single position, and so if you don't have the right background, the proper training or the right experience, your CV is unlikely even to get looked at, let alone get yourself invited for an interview. Prior to licensing, the close protection industry was selective, discreet and understandably fairly elitist - it had to be, as ultimately the job could involve protecting someone's life. But now virtually anyone can train and get an license to protect; all you need to do now is pay your money and turn up for your course. It really is as simple as that. Back in the '80s and '90s training was tough, demanding and unforgiving, and only the very best of the best would pass and

DEFINING PROFESSIONALISM go onto a career in this specialised sector of security. Now, however, in the UK at least, fails are rarely given, and many CP training companies actually have a money back guarantee; they will pass you just because they want to market and sell their training courses as a guaranteed 100% pass rate. It's hard to believe, but it's true. Before the licensing, training was extremely practical, with drills practised over and

55

over and over again, until perfect. Now, for many companies, training is mainly classroom based because they want to run the course in a short time as possible, to cut costs and increase profitability. According to government criteria, all CP courses should take a minimum of 140 hours - which in theory means that if you train for 12 hours a day, you can complete your course

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 43 in just under 11 days straight. How can people learn everything that is needed in close protection in only 11 days? How can someone protect another person's life after just 11 days of training? DEFINING PROFESSIONALISM admission criteria, extensive training and a rigorous passor-fail policy. The Fire Service and Paramedics are the same, yet the close protection industry, in the UK, has a 'pay your money, and you'll pass regardless' system that most would agree has both lessened the value of a license to operate, and significantly deprofessionalised a once fairly professional industry. So, because there are thousands of CP licenses, does this mean there are thousands of brilliant and expertly trained, professional

CPOs? Definitely not! There are more unprofessional, and under-trained CPOs in the industry now than there ever has been. By its very nature, this industry should be professional and should be elitist, and most security industry professionals would agree with me. Most wannabes, however, would not! In most countries, you would be laughed at if you said you were a professional protection officer after just having attended a 140-hour training course. Yet most CPOs have no other training whatsoever aside from their initial

Also, many CPOs don't have any close quarter combat experience either (I'm not talking martial arts or self-defense but close quarter combat skills that enable you to disarm and disable a potential attacker and defend your client), and unbelievable, there are also qualified protection officers who don't even have a driver's licence. The simple fact is that by over-

commercialising close protection training courses, finding work in the industry is extremely difficult because a standard CP course does not guarantee professionalism as it should. How can it, if virtually anyone, from any background, can attend a course and pass? All that the initial training (and a license) shows is that you have acquired a very basic understanding of CP operations and

It is a fact that most people who are currently working in protection still originate from the Military or emergency services. Probably as many as 75% of all working CPOs have a services background. However, despite this fact, and contrary to popular belief, you don't have to have a military career to enter and achieve success within the world of close protection (there are some brilliant CPOs that do not come from a military background). But, because you are mostly competing with former Military and Services personnel, you must be driven

It is easy in CP to find excuses for not finding work, or for not attending further training courses, but for those that don't depend upon excuses for their failings, it is possible to achieve, and achieve big. and goal-oriented, and be willing to overcome the many obstacles that fall in front of you, and of course, you need to be resilient. But it is possible, and over the years I have known many non-military personnel who have had outstanding careers as Protection Officers. However, industrywide, there aren't so many, and in order to be successful, they've had to specialise in skilled areas where they needed to invest heavily and commit to a lot of professional development. These are the people who define professionalism.

There is a good saying that I like to use: "If you really want to change your life, you'll find a way. If you don't, you'll find excuses." In the protection industry it is easy to create excuses for not finding work, for not attending further training courses, and for not studying the industry in your spare time, or for not going, two or three nights a week, to a close quarter combat class, but for those that don't depend upon excuses for their failings, it is possible to achieve, and achieve big. It's up to you though.

In another incident, a woman was attacked in the southern state of Porto Alegre. The woman was allegedly attacked after being seen with an LGBT flag and an anti-far-right sticker. The victim, in this case, was left scarred after a gang of men carved a swastika into her skin with a penknife. AntiLGBT rhetoric continues to grow, with football fans increasingly chanting antiLGBT chants. LGBT charities have noted there has already been nearly as many LGBT

deaths this year as in 2017, and are concerned that violence will increase further. Yemen Floods and Evacuations Reported in Southern AlMahra Governorate: Severe floods in the areas of southern Al-Mahra governorate were reported as tropical cyclone Luban made landfall. Roads were closed and several villages were evacuated. Severe floods were reported in the coastal city of Al-Ghaydah. Further flash floods and landslides may occur in southeastern Yemen. Palestine/Israel Multiple Fatalities as Palestinians Breach Border Fence Along the Gaza Border: Four Palestinians have been fatally shot after breaching the Gaza-Israel border fence and then approaching an Israeli Defence Force (IDF) military post. A further two Palestinians were also killed in protests on the same day, however, these were unrelated to the border breach. The fatalities come as tensions continue to rise with almost daily mass protests along the Gaza border.

ASSESSING YOUR OPERATIONAL READINESS

By: Mark “Six” James CPO, EPS, CAS

As an agency owner, protective services practitioner and training instructor, I am blessed to have been exposed to many protection specialists both domestically and abroad. Throughout those travels, I have seen a variety of performances at varying levels across all protective services sectors whether Dignitary Protection, PSD, Executive or Celebrity Protection. While many will want to debate why their sector is so different from another, in my humble opinion, they all boil down to effective risk mitigation within the scope of your available resources;

whether human, financial, or equipment. You'll often hear people say, “fake it until you make it.” But when time equals life, our industry is one of the few, that if we make a mistake, someone could get severely injured or worse; or perhaps their company or personal brand might suffer a severe financial hit. So, hope alone will never be a sufficient protection strategy. Also, one of the other critical lessons

CIRCUIT MAGAZINE ISSUE 43 I have learned is never to confuse enthusiasm with competency. Enthusiasm may help foster interest, but interest in the absence discipline and skill doesn’t enhance readiness.

critical for conducting threat assessments and risk analysis, and the components of the protective advance (site advances, route and contingency planning).

When it comes to personal operational readiness, I typically break it down into four distinct areas: ● Competencies ● Equipment ● Health & Wellness ● Operational Execution

How well do you perform in protective and evasive driving, first aid, or conflict resolution (de-escalation)? How are your negotiation and communication (oral and written) skills, level of computer savviness, understanding of physical security infrastructure (barriers, barricades and the role of environmental design), knowledge of defensive tactics, and proficiency in weapons training etc.?

Competencies How well do you know the role of the protection specialist? Do you understand the complexity and diversity of the core requirements of the job? Where did you receive your initial training? How often do you utilize the concepts and principles you were exposed to? Remember, training exposes you to concepts, but only proper practice and execution builds skills. If you do not make those concepts part of your day to day life, how can you enhance that skill? Remember it is only a skill if you can do it on demand. For example, strong attention to detail is

Equipment Based on your preferred sector, do you have the minimum equipment required, whether that be: Clothing (suits, uniforms, casual clothes, footwear) Technical equipment (computers, smartphones, earpieces, radios) Ancillaries (chargers, international adapters, flashlights, batteries)

74

ASSESSING YOUR OPERATIONAL READINESS Travel necessities (luggage, noise cancellation headphones, passport) Role-specific equipment (body armor, individual first aid kits, firearms and knives if required). This is not an all-inclusive list; rather the bare minimum requirements. When it comes to gobags for your kit, I have found that approximately 70% of my go-bag was made up of standardized components required for use on any protection assignment regardless of the client; while the other 30% of the equipment was mission or client specific. When it comes to items like batteries and chargers, always think times two and carry a spare. If your client’s cell phone starts to die, who do you think he or she is going to ask for one? After you give up your only charger how will you maintain power levels on your electronic equipment? Particularly your cell phone as you are the conduit between the

75

driver and other critical resources. Keep a couple of hundred dollars worth of local currency with you, and a credit card for your own emergencies. Health & Wellness Health & Wellness is not about a diet or an exercise program; instead, it's an ongoing commitment to living a healthy lifestyle which involves sound nutrition and continuing strength and conditioning to help build and maintain muscle mass and enhance cardo levels; both of which are critical to longevity in both our career and life. Capabilities will always vary from one operator to another based on their individual bodies and wellness objectives; however, the guidelines below show what is often referred to as the protective gold standard for fitness of the US Secret Service. While every agency and department may not adopt the same goals, it at least gives us a baseline for ongoing discussion. For simplicity, your department or

Keeping Your Edge: Measured Responses in Tour Security (Part II) In the first part of this ongoing series, we discussed the challenges faced by Protectors who work with entertainers that spend at least some of their career involved in stage performance.

Keeping Your Edge: Action vs. Reaction

These challenges can take the form of unintentional harm coming by way of a prop, stage equipment, or something as simple as a slip and fall caused by a long dress and high heels. Whenever we can, we as Protectors must try and anticipate, correcting

or counteracting the occurrences that can cause this harm. This is usually done during the Site Advance at which time we do a walk-thru of the areas that the VIP will be visiting, in this scenario, the stage. It is at that time we will perform a visual inspection of the stage and the props,

the Protectee’s mind, they know you were there and responded to a potential crisis. The act of being in the right place allowed us to be effective and never is that more true than when dealing with the other category of intentional/ unintentional harm, namely the stage crasher. Be it the individual who’s so caught up in the excitement of the night and can’t contain themselves, so they leap on stage to party with the performer or, the disturbed or disgruntled person who evades the other rings of security and has an intent to do harm or embarrass. Regardless, we are the last line of defense.

Even in the event of the before-mentioned trip and fall, we may not be close enough to catch the Client because of the proximity issues discussed in Part 1 (issue 42). However, we should see the incident as it occurs, and be in motion to render aid in the shortest window of time conceivable. In many instances, the entertainer will wave you back off into the wings, give a shrug, along with a joke to the audience in attendance, Again, if this individual has reached the stage, and carry on with the there have been a number show. You have to do something, but what? At the moment when you recognize that there has been a stage breech, you may not be able to ascertain the person's intentions immediately, all you see is a body moving towards your Protectee. However, in whatever time it takes for them to cover the distance to reach the entertainer you have to have at least one thing running through your mind - Protect the Client, Protect the Client’s Image. The tough part is, I see members of our community get the first part right but still ultimately fail because they neglected to think about the importance of the latter: Protect the Client’s image. We have all heard the phrase, 'image is everything', and that’s a truism in the entertainment business. Much of a performer's career is centered around the image that the paying public receives. This is truer than ever with the rise and popularity of social media. Not only will

Once there, you then initiate a foot sweep, drop him to the floor, before picking him up by his collar and belt and tossing him, head first, back into the audience, quickly exiting stage right. The entire incident took seconds; the client wasn’t touched and was able to finish their performance to rounds of applause. However, the next day you are brought into a meeting with the client’s management and informed that there will be a separation of service. How did this happen? Unbeknownst to you, the stage-crasher, who

was thrown back into the audience, is claiming to have suffered substantial injuries as a result of your actions and has retained legal counsel and plans to sue. But more than that, the replay of the event is trending on social media, and overshadowing the client's stellar performance. Headlines now read some variation about how “_____ bodyguard kicked the crap out of a fan.” The client’s person was protected but not their image, and it’s a failure on our part, as it is our job to safeguard both. In part 3 of this series, we will discuss alternative responses to dealing with stage crashers of all types.
