Preface to Issue 45

In the 45th issue of Spotlight • Contemporary Art Magazine, we wanted to bring together artists whose work reminds us why art continues to matter so deeply in contemporary life. Across painting, sculpture, photography, textile art, digital media, and mixed media practices, the featured artists approach creation not as decoration or distraction, but as a vital form of human expression. In a world increasingly shaped by speed, noise, and disposability, the act of making art, looking closely at art, and choosing to live with art becomes something profoundly important. It asks us to slow down, to observe more carefully, and to remain emotionally and intellectually present.

What continues to move us as curators and publishers is the extraordinary diversity of ways artists transform experience into visual language. Some of the works in this issue are quiet and meditative, others bold, confrontational, joyful, or psychologically charged. Yet all of them reflect a deep commitment to creativity, sensitivity, and vision. Art allows us to preserve memory, challenge perception, imagine alternatives, and reconnect with beauty, complexity, and humanity itself. To collect art is not simply to acquire an object. It is to build an ongoing relationship with ideas, emotions, materials, and the lives of the artists behind them.

This publication exists to create meaningful encounters between artists and readers while encouraging a greater appreciation for contemporary art in everyday life. Whether you are an established collector, a practicing artist, or someone simply discovering the pleasure of living with original work, we hope these pages inspire curiosity, reflection, and connection. Supporting artists and engaging seriously with art remains one of the most enduring ways we affirm culture, imagination, and human depth.

Why Art Matters, Why Artists Matter

Art matters because it allows us to experience life beyond utility, speed, and routine. It interrupts distraction and asks us to feel, observe, question, and remember. A powerful artwork can shift the atmosphere of a room, but more importantly, it can shift the atmosphere within us. It can hold emotion when language fails, preserve a moment of humanity, or challenge the way we see the world and ourselves. Across history, art has remained one of the few universal languages capable of connecting people across cultures, generations, and ideologies.

Artists matter because they are the ones willing to translate uncertainty, beauty, conflict, memory, and imagination into visible form. They dedicate years, often entire lifetimes, to refining a way of seeing that most people never pause long enough to articulate. The artist notices what others overlook. Through discipline, sensitivity, and persistence, they create works that continue living long after the moment of their making.

In a world increasingly shaped by algorithms, noise, and repetition, artists remind us of the value of individuality, risk, and human expression.

Collecting art is not simply about ownership or decoration. It is about living alongside ideas, emotions, and visions that continue to inspire over time. A meaningful collection reflects curiosity, identity, and personal connection. Whether beginning with a single piece or expanding an established collection, acquiring art is an investment in culture, creativity, and the enduring presence of human imagination. The most important collections are rarely built all at once. They evolve gradually, guided by instinct, emotion, and discovery.

The contemporary art world is filled with extraordinary artists creating ambitious and deeply personal work. Some are already internationally established, while others are only beginning to emerge. What matters most is finding work that moves you, challenges you, or stays in your mind long after you encounter it. Start slowly, trust your eye, and allow yourself to engage with art beyond trends or expectation. The right artwork does not merely fill a wall; it changes the way a space feels and the way a life is experienced. Go ahead, begin or enrich your collection now....

The next artwork that truly stays with you may also become the one you never forget!

GAYLE PRINTZ

A Force in Contemporary Art

American artist Gayle Printz is known for her dynamic, thickly textured abstract canvases that pulse with movement, rhythm, and emotional intensity. In just a few years, she has launched an extraordinary international trajectory, with her name appearing across major exhibitions, publications, awards, and collections worldwide. Her work now forms part of permanent museum collections, including Le Musée de Peinture de Saint-Frajou in France, and has been exhibited extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States. With thousands of international awards and recognitions, alongside a dedicated and highly active studio practice, Printz has established herself as one of the most visible and ambitious voices working in contemporary abstraction today.

While her work naturally enters into dialogue with the history of abstraction, Printz refuses to situate herself within any predefined category or inherited structure. Her paintings emerge through instinct, emotion, and intuition rather than formal rules or academic conventions. Working without traditional training, she approaches painting with unusual freedom, allowing gesture, texture, movement, and color to unfold organically across the canvas. Printz often speaks of giving viewers the freedom to discover emotional meaning through their own imagination, and that openness remains central to her practice. Her paintings do not dictate conclusions; they invite experience. Dense surfaces reveal shifting forms, layered chromatics, and evolving rhythms that continue to transform the longer one looks.

“Green II” offers a compelling example of this approach. Built through vigorous accumulations of paint, the work balances exuberance with surprising complexity. Luminous greens collide with energetic linear passages and densely worked textures, creating a visual field that feels simultaneously chaotic and cohesive. The painting seems to oscillate between landscape, organic growth, and pure abstraction without ever settling into a single reading. The work sustains a remarkable balance between force and openness. Physically assertive and emotionally direct, it nevertheless remains generous in its ambiguity, inviting viewers to project their own associations and discoveries into its layered surface.

Bold, charismatic, and entirely uncompromising, Printz brings the same fearless energy to painting that defines her personality. In a contemporary landscape often shaped by repetition and restraint, her work retains a rare immediacy and sincerity. What is particularly striking is the scale of her achievement within such a relatively short period of time. Supported by a sustained commitment to her practice and a visual language that is instantly recognizable, Gayle Printz continues to build a body of work distinguished by conviction, originality, and emotional resonance. Her paintings are not merely exercises in abstraction; they are declarations of creative freedom, and their growing presence in collections and institutions suggests an artist whose influence is still unfolding.

A distinguished example of the artistic vision that has earned Gayle Printz international recognition, “Green II” combines expressive gesture, layered textures, and nuanced color relationships within a compelling abstract composition. Its rhythmic energy and dynamic movement create an immersive visual experience, balancing spontaneity with formal sophistication. Celebrated through international awards, exhibitions, and critical reviews, “Green II” reflects the strength and maturity of Printz’s abstract practice.

Adapted into both figurative and abstract compositions, her surfaces carry softness, movement, and sensual material presence. Drawing from an architect’s understanding of structure, rhythm, and spatial balance, she creates atmospheric works where buildings, reflections, and landscapes dissolve into textured fields of light and memory. Her paintings feel simultaneously grounded and ethereal, balancing precision with emotional openness.

The tactile quality of Tadelakt remains central to the work’s emotional resonance, giving each composition a quiet physical presence shaped by touch, time, and material sensitivity. Poupée invites us into spaces of stillness, atmosphere, and contemplative beauty.

Questions of identity, control, and emotional exposure drive the psychologically charged work of Alisa Chernova. Chernova’s practice explores the fragile structures through which people define, protect, and perform themselves. Drawing from Freudian psychological concepts, the works examine the tension between external control and internal rupture, where the self begins to fragment under emotional pressure. Through restrained color, texture, and carefully balanced compositions, the artist creates images that appear ordered while quietly revealing instability beneath the surface.

Cecily Markham’s life in art began early. Raised in an intrinsically artistic home and educated through both formal training and decades of self-directed study, she developed a multidisciplinary practice spanning painting, drawing, photography, installation, poetry, and integrated arts. Growing up near Washington, D.C., she spent countless hours studying museum collections, absorbing influences that continue to shape her visual language today.

The lineage behind Markham’s paintings is wide-ranging and thoughtfully absorbed. Echoes of Rembrandt’s humanity, Monet’s atmosphere, Van Gogh’s emotional intensity, Georgia O’Keeffe’s sensitivity to form, and Rothko’s contemplative use of color can all be felt within a body of work that remains distinctly her own. Rather than imitation, these influences serve as points of departure for exploration and discovery.

Cecily’s abstract paintings embrace surprise and intuition. Sweeping gestures, layered color, and expressive mark-making create compositions that evolve organically across the surface. There is movement everywhere, but also moments of stillness allowing the eye to rest and reflect. Working with a freedom rooted in experience rather than formula, Markham paintings feel both spontaneous and deeply considered, balancing emotional intensity with a strong sense of structure and atmosphere

Alongside painting, Markham has developed a compelling installation practice that meaningfully brings together found materials. These immersive works extend her interest in memory, transformation, and emotional resonance into physical space. Rather than presenting fixed narratives, the installations encourage personal interpretation, inviting viewers to move through environments where symbolism, absence, and presence coexist in subtle and often unexpected ways.

For ‘Bride in the Wilderness,’ Markham combines branches, flowing white fabric, and a single glove to create a scene that feels both beautiful and unsettling. The work suggests a story without fully telling it, leaving space for themes of absence, transition, memory, and vulnerability to emerge. Its emotional power lies in this openness, inviting viewers to complete the narrative for themselves.

Over the years, Markham has presented solo exhibitions, installations, public artworks, and award-winning paintings and photographs. What unites this diverse body of work is a belief in art’s ability to move people. Whether working on canvas, in space, or through language, she continually creates opportunities for reflection, surprise, and meaningful connection.
