High Altitude Health Tips DR. JIM LITTLE JR.,

FAMILY HEALTH & URGENT CARE

DRINK WATER, WATER, AND MORE WATER.

TAKE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST SUNBURN. HIGHER ELEVATIONS MEAN MORE EXPOSURE.

WHAT DOES ALTITUDE SICKNESS FEEL LIKE? The most common adverse reaction we see is acute mountain sickness, also known as altitude sickness. The symptoms are described as headache, nausea, fatigue, and sometimes a little shortness of breath. Generally, those symptoms are worse when you combine higher elevations and exertion.

LIMIT YOUR ALCOHOL INTAKE.

TRANSITION GRADUALLY FROM THE VALLEY FLOOR TO HIGHER ELEVATIONS.

urgentcare.tetonhospital.org 307-739-8999

If you feel that you might be suffering from acute mountain sickness, descend to the valley floor, stay hydrated, get some rest, and most of the symptoms will pass. However, if symptoms persist, visit a doctor to rule out other health concerns. Visitors with preexisting medical conditions like heart disease, heart failure, high blood pressure, emphysema, and sleep apnea may have a difficult time adapting to altitude and can experience worsening of their conditions. See a physician if necessary or call 911 in case of emergency.

MOUNTAIN LION

© 2015 Jackson Hole Traveler, published by Circ Design Inc. When you’re in Jackson Hole, Darwinism is in full effect. The large animals can—and will—run over you. Don’t try to sit on their backs or ride them. Don’t run, skip, or ski up to the edge of anything you cannot see over. Weather is extreme, so no standing on an outcropping during a summer lightning storm or licking a flag pole at 20 below. If you steal an antler from the Town Square arches, you’ll incur bad luck for 20 years. Should you need more advice on what not to do, see jacksonholetraveler.com/ article/what-not-to-do/

Golf, fish, hike, bike, stand up paddleboard, ride a horse, and shoot a gun all without leaving the club. To schedule a tour, please contact LB Haney: lbhaney@srsportingclub.com or 307-201-2567.

T R AV E L E R T I D B I T The Snake River draws over 300,000 visitors every year! With sections designated as a Wild and Scenic River by U.S. Congress, it makes the perfect destination for rafting, fly fishing, and lazing in the sun.

Top Attractions THE TETONS The Tetons rise dramatically in jagged spikes over a lush and undulating valley. These are “what mountains are supposed to look like,” Theodore Roosevelt once remarked of the spectacular range. Discover the iconic peaks, unique geological history, and pristine wilderness of Grand Teton National Park on pg. 28.

AERIAL TRAM The Aerial Tram—the unofficial mascot of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort—zips passengers to the top of Rendezvous Mountain in nine minutes flat. That’s 4,139 vertical feet! Hop on board for superlative skiing, stunning views, or both (pg. 36).

TOWN SQUARE Bathed by the neon honky-tonk sign of the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar and bordered by four quirky elk-antler arches, the Town Square forms Jackson’s retail and artistic core. We give you the lowdown on experiencing our cultural crossroads on pg. 56.

NATIONAL ELK REFUGE You won’t need binoculars to view the thousands of elk wintering on this swathe of protected land set beneath the Gros Ventre mountain range. Each year, elk gather on the National Elk Refuge to feed, scramble for dominance with extraordinary antler clashes, and rear their young. See it by sleigh! (pg. 53)

SNOW KING MOUNTAIN Find your mountain legs with a hearty hike or take a quick chairlift ride to the summit of Snow King. The vast, windswept panorama of Jackson Hole and the Tetons provides a fantastic orientation to the valley. Snow King in all seasons: pg. 50.

Mountain Weather Tips The old cliché that Jackson Hole has “eight months of winter and three months of bad skiing” isn’t too far from the truth. Winters are revered for storms that bring copious snowfall, blanketing the Tetons with light powder. However, it is the summer season we cherish for its welcoming warmth, green hillsides, and generally more stable weather—even if only for a brief period of time. Jackson Hole has seen its extremes of weather in every season, but keep this in mind: It is the “above normal” and “below normal” weather that makes our averages. Each day, each week, each month, each season, and every year can be wildly different. Most visitors will find that we have a relatively dry climate here in the Jackson Hole valley, averaging less than 16 inches of rainfall per year. The mountains, however, receive three or four times as much precipitation annually. This equates to more snowfall in the winter and more summer rain showers and thunderstorms over the mountains. Temperatures can vary widely any time of the year, especially when you change elevation. We have

WITH LOCAL WEATHERMAN

JIM WOODMENCEY

more than 7,000 feet of elevation difference to consider between the valley floor and the top of the Grand Teton, which means that hikers, climbers, and skiers need to dress the part, as weather conditions can change quickly with changes in elevation. Snow, colder temperatures, and winterlike weather usually begin by mid-October and last into mid-April. Summer never really kicks in with highs in the 70s and 80s until July and August. The other months—our spring and fall— can be a potpourri of conditions that might resemble a nice summer day or require a little snow shoveling. For current conditions visit mountainweather.com.

T R AV E L E R T I D B I T The mighty bald eagle is a carnivore with an adult wingspan of 6 to 8 feet. It nests along the Snake River and fishes its waters.

A whitewater rafting trip is at the top of Jackson Hole’s must-do summer activities. The Snake River Canyon is rich in geological history and your guide will point out some of the features that make this canyon unique. You may see river otters, osprey, and bald eagles during your trip. A lucky few may even catch a glimpse of a mountain goat, mule deer, elk, or even a grizzly or black bear! Not to mention, your trip through the canyon’s rapids is fun and exhilarating for the whole family.

Over the past century, residents of Jackson Hole have worn a lot of hats, but it’s the cowboy hat that’s never really come off.

A LITTLE HISTORY Fox Hastings, national champion, rodeo bulldogger and steer roper, c. 1920s-30s.

When you visit this special valley, you join a long line of “dudes”—folks who’ve come out West to try on a certain style of living beneath the open sky. Traversing the Teton Pass on horseback or bumping along in a buggy over rough roads, dudes came to ride the range, pitch hay, and camp out under the stars. Today, Jackson Hole’s pioneer spirit is still kicking, and many experiences abound for hardy visitors to put their best boot forward and “live the West.”

JACKSON HOLE traveler

Both the town of Jackson and the valley surrounding it, Jackson Hole, were named for David E. Jackson, an itinerant trader in the employ of a fur company, but the town of Jackson was not established until decades later in 1894. Soon after, homesteaders began to trickle in, lured by the prospect of open land for the taking. These folks faced a hard existence and eked out a living through a combination of cattle ranching, farming, and biggame hunting. Despite the hardship, many of the earliest settlers gave their names to towns, roads, and landmarks in Jackson Hole, and their descendants still ranch or reside within the valley. Although the nearby national parks have always drawn sightseers, Jackson Hole’s tourist trade truly took root in the 1920s, when dude ranches like the still-operating Triangle X Ranch began inviting visitors to stay. Since then, times have changed, but the spirit of Jackson Hole remains true to its original residents. THIS IS THE LAST OF THE OLD WEST, AFTER ALL.

This free show is full of outlaws, stern sheriffs, and rowdy re-creations of the Old West. The Shootout is fun for the whole family. Don’t worry: They’re only firing blanks.

Some of the valley’s original homesteaders left plenty of traces behind. For a glimpse of the structures they built to shelter from the elements, drive out to Mormon Row or check out the Menors Ferry Historical Site inside Grand Teton National Park. Both provide an informative and highly picturesque image of pioneer life.

Pulled by an enormous pair of Clydesdale horses, the redand-yellow local stagecoach is modeled after the original 19th century coaches that traversed the territories carrying mail and supplies. Go beyond the view with our crib sheet to all

GRAND FACTS The Grand Teton is 13,770 feet high and is the secondhighest peak in Wyoming. Its first ascent is disputed: Two climbers claimed the first summit in 1872, but the group that gained the top in 1898 cast doubt upon their story. Even before that, Native Americans built a structure of rocks called the Enclosure near the summit. Thousands of locals and visitors now successfully climb the iconic mountain every year.

THE TETONS

The world-famous Tetons are a young mountain range. Ten million years ago, the stony peaks began to rise along the Teton fault line in what is known as a “fault block.” Picture tons upon tons of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rock vaulting up and forward while the valley of Jackson Hole sank (and continues to sink) in response. This created the sheer relief the Shoshone dubbed “Teewinot,” or “many pinnacles.” Intense glaciation then proceeded to sculpt the range into the rugged spines you see today.

WHAT’S NEW AT JENNY LAKE

WHAT TO EXPECT

HIKING TIPS

» Check at a visitor center for up-to-date trail conditions and closures.

PLAN AHEAD

»

Through June, hikers heading around the south end of the lake will be rerouted to a parallel horse trail as crews wrap up 2014 work.

» Newly reconstructed trail sections north of Cascade Creek are now open. » The trail between HIDDEN FALLS and INSPIRATION POINT will be closed all summer for reconstruction of bridges, rock walls, and trail tread. Inspiration Point will be accessed via the horse trail, a forested route that connects Cascade Canyon to the lakeshore trail. Multiple routes will provide access to Hidden Falls. » After Labor Day, underground utility work will begin in the visitor plaza and campground. A temporary visitor center will be moved to the south Jenny parking lot, opening spring 2016. The parking lot will be restriped to maximize the limited parking.

DO

INSPIRING JOURNEYS: The $17 million renewal effort that is transforming the Jenny Lake area for the National Park Service centennial in 2016 is well underway. The project will focus for a second year on backcountry trail work, reversing years of heavy use and damage, before moving to the frontcountry to improve facilities and interpretation, increase access for visitors with limited mobility, and create lake overlooks.

Whether hiking around the lake or using the shuttle to cross it, you can still visit Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point during construction. COMBINING THESE TWO DESTINATIONS INTO ONE HIKE WILL REQUIRE MORE TIME AND DISTANCE THAN USUAL DUE TO THE TEMPORARY TRAIL CLOSURE. Just west of the West Boat Dock, look for signs that clearly point to either destination. You’ll access Hidden Falls via the normal approach east of the falls, but access to Inspiration Point will occur via the Cascade Canyon Horse Trail.

COME EARLY OR COME LATE

Late morning through early afternoon will be crowded. Avoid peak visitation hours, for minimal hiker traffic and easier parking.

FEWER PEOPLE, DRAMATIC SCENERY Consider exploring other lakeshore hikes in the park. Rangers will happily recommend favorites and help you plan an unforgettable day.

GET INVOLVED GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK FOUNDATION is the park’s primary fundraising partner. To date, the Foundation has raised $11.6 million toward the $14 million project goal. Campaign ends August 25, 2016. Join the effort to improve the Jenny Lake area for millions who will visit. You can give at gtnpf.org, call 307-732-0629, or text JENNY to 20222 to contribute $10 today!

Guaranteed to be a highlight of your day in Yellowstone, be sure to set aside a large chunk of time to explore the Old Faithful Inn, catch one of the famous geyser’s on-time eruptions, and explore the wondrous Upper Geyser Basin. Inside the new visitor center, you’ll find posted signs predicting the next Old Faithful eruption, so grab a seat and wait for the impressive sight of up to 8,400 gallons of scalding water reaching heights topping 184 feet. The monumental Old Faithful Inn, completed in 1904, is the largest log structure in the world. Its massive 65-foot ceiling, stone fireplace, and gnarled railings made from local lodgepole pine ensure its stature as one of the most legendary buildings of the American frontier. The inn also features shops and restaurants.

Shopping, dining, free concerts and events, kids’ camps, mountain biking, hiking, paragliding, and scenic aerial tram rides are just the beginning of the offerings at one of the premiere destination resorts in the country. There really is something for everyone!

HIKING TRAILS If feet are your main method of transportation, you’ll be delighted to learn that the extensive hiking trail system has expanded at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. In addition to new trails connecting the tops of the Aerial Tram and Bridger Gondola through Tensleep Bowl, the trail crew recently completed the beautiful WILDFLOWER TRAIL, which links the LOWER FACES trails from the bottom of the mountain all the way up to Casper. Great views of the valley, Aerial Tram, Bridger Gondola, and wildflowers can be soaked in to the fullest, as the trail boasts benches at several scenic points. There is even a picnic table that offers shade and one of the best views around. You can expect this trail to be about two hours round trip.

KIDS ACTIVITIES The KIDS’ RANCH lets youngsters grow, explore, and learn about Jackson Hole with great day-camp and bike-clinic programs. Hiking and a variety of other fun outdoor adventures keep kids energized, while a science project or ride on the AERIAL TRAM can inject wonder into the day. Arts and crafts, water play in the POP-JET FOUNTAIN, or HORSEBACK RIDING round out the experience. A recent addition: BIKE CAMPS FOR ALL AGES, where young rippers can learn fun and safe mountain-biking skills. The well-trained and fun-loving staff at the Kids’ Ranch will have your children demanding a return trip!
