AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH FOR DEVELOPMENT
CIRAD is committed to Open Access to Knowledge Access to Knowledge is a global movement seeking immediate, open and free access, with unrestricted use, for all original scientific research results, raw data, metadata, source documents, images and multimedia documents
The principle of open access has been enshrined in CIRAD’s institutional strategy since 2006. Its research teams are encouraged to disseminate their scientific results freely, using institutional tools. Open access renders research more effective, improves the visibility of authors and enhances the impact of their work. It removes organizational and geographical barriers that impede the free circulation of knowledge. It facilitates collaboration, strengthening scientific excellence and skills. By permitting the re-use and computer analysis of published results, open access promotes innovation and interdisciplinarity. It encourages global exchanges to the benefit of the scientific community, the economy and society as a whole (Science Europe Principles on Open Access to Research Publications 1).
CIRAD is part of the global Access to Knowledge movement • In 2006, CIRAD signed the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities2. • In 2006, then in 2012, CIRAD signed the partnership agreement backing open archives and the pooled national repository HAL3 (Hyper Articles on Line).
CIRAD has enshrined open access to knowledge in its institutional strategy 4 • Open access to knowledge figures in the: 2014-2018 State-CIRAD Contractual Objectives 2012-2022 Strategic Vision: making research a real tool for development Scientific and Partnership Strategy Objectives (OSSP): development through active research.
CIRAD has an institutional open repository for its publications • It is compulsory to deposit CIRAD publications in Agritrop5, the institutional open repository. CIRAD researchers deposit their publications in Agritrop themselves (self-archiving). In 2018, Agritrop holds 100,000 references and 33,400 full-text documents, of which 20,300 are in open access on the Internet. • In 2017, Ranking Web of Repositories6 rated Agritrop 7th out of the 115 French open archives. • Agritrop uses open source software and international standards for the management and open dissemination of its metadata: Agritrop is compatible with the FAO Agris7 database and the European Union OpenAire8 infrastructure.
