Beauval lost a very important part of its history to a fire on Wednesday, April 27, 2011. The Charles Gauthier Memorial Arena was originally built in the late 1970‟s with the Mezzanine part and the artificial ice added on in the late 1980‟s.

The arena has played an important role for the community and surrounding area all these years with events held throughout the year from hockey tournaments, graduations, dances, bingos, community gatherings and wake services. There was even a curling bonspiel that happened in there a number of years ago. One of the most important events that took place in the arena is the annual Jamboree that were held in the 80‟s and 90‟s bringing in such acts as Doug Kershaw, Kashtin, Sir Douglas Quintet, Joel Sonnier, Errol Ranville, Al Cherny, Buck Owens, the Kentucky Headhunters along with all the northern musicians.

As a fundraiser in the mid-80‟s, we hosted a hockey game with former NHL players such as Guy Lafleur, Steve Shutt, Clarke Gillies, Dave Semenko, Tiger Williams and others.

I am sure quite a few people have their own special moments that they had at the arena from listening to their favourite musicians, scoring that winning goal or even sharing the loss of a loved one with family and community members.

There was quite a few community events including weddings planned in the upcoming months that will have to take place elsewhere or re-scheduled. Beauval Recreation were looking forward to activities that were planned in the near future including rollerskating, floor hockey and archery. Not only are these events cancelled, the equipment to host these events were inside the arena.

The main comment received from community members is “When are we going to re-build?”.

Community spirit is alive and well in this community and we will use that proudly as we make plans to rebuild the arena.

Thank you to the Beauval Fire Brigade and also to the Ile a la Crosse Fire and Rescue Department for their quick response and protecting the surrounding area.

The Northern Village of Beauval encourages all of you to clean up around your yards, your garbage bins and all around your garbage bin area. Our community is beautiful so lets all take part in keeping it that way by maintaining clean yards and clean garbage bins. Thank you for your anticipated co-operation.

Laurie was grateful and proud to be part of the community of angels and for the support of people from surrounding communities as well.

You prayers, words of encouragement, card and letters and time spent with her during her illness meant so much to her.

Thank you to all who generously participated in raising funds for the expenses associated with her out of town travels for treatments.

Laurie was also grateful for each event; she kept a record of the help that she received.

Thank you to all who supported Laurie‟s children, mother, sister, brothers, cousins, auntie‟s, uncles, nieces and nephews after her passing on Saturday, April 16, 2011.

Thank you to all who met us and travelled with us from Green Lake to Beauval and to those who stood vigil by the roadside. Also thank you to all who helped with Laurie‟s wake, who sang, cooked and to the youth who cleaned. A big thank you to all who helped out at the service, it was so beautiful, all the musicians who came out, Valley View Staff for the awesome supper and to Carol Edquist for making the cards and especially to all who generously donated to the auction.
