It can be tough to know what to say or do when someone you care about is grieving. It’s common to feel helpless, awkward, or unsure. You may be afraid of intruding, saying the wrong thing, or making the person feel even worse. Or maybe you feel there’s little you can do to make things better. While you can’t take away the pain of the loss, you can provide much-needed comfort and support. There are many ways to help a grieving friend or family member, starting with letting the person know you care.

What you need to know about Bereavement and Grief The death of a loved one is one of life’s most difficult experiences. The bereavement struggle with many intense and frightening emotions, including depression, anger, and guilt. Often, they feel isolated and alone in their grief. Having someone to lean on can help them get through the grieving process.

Don’t let discomfort prevent you from reaching out to someone who is grieving. Now, more than ever, your support is needed. You might not know exactly what to say or what to do, but that’s okay. You don’t need to have answers or give advice. The most important thing you can do for a grieving person is to simply be there. Your support and caring presence will help them cope with pain and begin to heal.

Helping a Grieving Person tip 1: Listen with compassion Almost everyone worries about what to say to people who are grieving. But knowing how to listen is much more important. Oftentimes, well-meaning people avoid talking about the death or mentioning the deceased person. However, the bereaved need to feel that their loss is acknowledged, it’s not too terrible to talk about and their loved one won’t be forgotten.

You can make it easier for them by making specific suggestions - such as, “I’m going to the market this afternoon. What can I bring you from here?” or “I’ve made beef stew for dinner. When can I come by and bring you some?”

Consistency is very helpful, if you can imagine it being there for as long as it takes. This helps the grieving person look forward to your attentiveness without having to make the additional effort of asking again and again. You can also convey an open invitation by saying, “Let me know what I can do,” which may make a grieving person feel more comfortable about asking for help. But keep in mind that the bereaved may not have the energy or motivation to call when they need something, so it’s better if you take the initiative to check in. Be the one who takes the initiative.

Helping a grieving person tip 3: Provide ongoing support Grieving continues long after the funeral is over and the cards and flowers have stopped. The length of the grieving process varies from the person to person. But in general, grief lasts much longer than most people expect. Your bereaved friend or family member may need your support for months or even years.

Helping a grieving person tip 4: Watch for warning signs It’s common for a grieving person to feel depressed, confused, disconnected from other, or like they’re going crazy. But if the bereaved person’s symptoms don’t gradually start to fade or they get worse with time - this may be a sign that normal grief has evolved into a more serious problem, such as clinical depression.

to determine when a school facility is due for an expansion. Jans Bay School is poised for a much needed community multi activity room.

There have been assessments completed and it has been determined that the school needs the extra space this will be one project with high priority. The board will be submitting a list of school facility upgrades to the province. The provincial government currently does not have a capital plan developed; our list will be ready once they roll out a plan.

NORTEP/NORPAC: At our most recent annual inaugural meeting I was reinstated as chair for another year. We developed a new three year strategy plan we will be working on achieving our objectives over the next few years. Our focus has changed from training northern aboriginal teachers to training teachers to teach aboriginal languages & cultures.

We will still continue to provide both options.

With the recent provincial budget we did okay in terms of running the program for another year. We were disappointed with the lack of capital announcement. We have not given up on the administrative and math/science facility, we will be meeting with the ministry to discuss plans on the new facility. We continue to develop our policy and operations manual, along with changing our governance status, we need to move from a “not for profit” to a legitimate educational institution. We would like to be able to develop our own distinct northern curriculum with degree granting ability, we will have an opportunity to present this during the public consultations that are being planned by the ministry.

Saskatchewan School Boards Association: We recently hosted an annual spring assembly in Regina. The assembly was dedicated to First Nations and Métis. There were presentations from school boards that have formal partnerships with First Nations Reserves. There are

interesting arrangements throughout the province with things such as bussing students to sharing facilities and programs. Some divisions have advanced while others haven’t done much in establishing partnerships. The difficulty with dealing with First Nations is the fact that Indian Northern Affairs Canada is involved in the process for most FN Reserves. At last months executive meeting the minister of education attended our meeting. I had opportunity to ask her about what the ministry is doing to address the issue of our children suffering from dental issues. A recent study showed that 48% of children in the primary end are suffering from cavities and in serious need of dental care. This is an issue that needs serious attention as it directly impacts student achievement levels. It is impossible for students to learn and function in the classroom if they are suffering with pain, this also often leads to other health complications. We will continue to advocate on behalf of all provincial schools but particularly with northern schools where the problem is gargantuan proportions. I suggested to the minister that several ministries need to work collectively to address poverty, lack of housing and other northern issues that will work at improving student achievement levels. The school division is only able to do so much with resources that we have. Schools should not be expected to provide these important basic needs; they are in the business of teaching, research tells us that if the basic needs of a child are not met than trying to teach the student will be next to impossible.

Northern Lights School Division #113 Region 3 Report

By Board Member: Joe Daigneault In my last report I started off with the topic of a

lack of a formula for publicly funded school boards across the province, as it turns out the newly appointed minister announced that there would not be a formula this year. The lack of formula puts school boards in a precarious position boards are left doing a lot of speculating about how much they will be receiving for their operations. I was at the recent budget speech at the legislative building in Regina when the budget was handed down. Northern Lights faired well with the budget, other school divisions did not do so well. It is difficult to ascertain what factors the ministry used to decide how to divvy up the funds. I am sure once we go through the detail in our funding letter we will have a better idea. We will be going through a second round of recruitment of a new director. The position is a very high profile position and will require a very cautious approach to ensure we have the right person for the job. The person will need to be a firm believer of the Board’s continuous improvement plan. The Intervention Model to improve student’s academic progress through intervention as well as behavioural intervention with a three tier approach with a specific plan developed for every student with a team approach involving parents and community is the most positive approach and the best way to improve student achievement levels. Students that misbehave in class will no longer be given a suspension (holiday) they will instead be subjected to the 3 tier approach to improving their behaviour, depending on the seriousness of the behaviour they will be placed at a level and dealt with by the team. In addition to director recruitment the board made the decision to hire an additional superintendent starting immediately. We have

met or exceeded the provincial criterion that determines how many superintendents we need which are based on the number of teaching staff we have in the division. We have decided to start with hiring someone on a temporary basis until we have had the opportunity to recruit. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone looking for this line of work it is a lifetime career opportunity. On another initiative, we hope to provide summer programming to address the “summer slide syndrome”. Summer slide syndrome is only now being recognized through research. It is found that students lose 50% of what they learn in the school year and only retain 50% when they return to school after summer holidays. The activity will be designed to teach children through play and activity that is fun so that they don’t feel they are going to school over the summer. I am extremely pleased with what each of the SCC’s are doing in their communities. Each month we receive minutes from SCC’s and based on these minutes there are many exciting activities for the schools and community to participate in we will continue to support those activities that encourage parental involvement in their children’s learning activities. We are adding community rooms to most schools for the purpose of encouraging parents & public to come to the school and participate in activities that bring the community to the schools. Construction of a community room will begin soon along with a garage at Valley view school to house SCC activity and to house the new bus. As well, renovations to the elementary end of the school has started, this is for the purpose of housing the new early child education centre. Lake View School will be on the top of the list for an expansion based on the formula that is used
