Beauval Public Library Bag Service 9000 Beauval, SK S0M 0G0 Deadline: Monday, April 11, TOBACCO TAX ENFORCEMENT MEASURES CONTINUING Fifty-nine cartons of cigarettes illegally imported into Saskatchewan have been seized by tobacco enforcement officials with the Ministry of Finance.

Finance enforcement officers made the seizure west of Saskatoon on Highway 16, before the tobacco reached its intended destination.

The cigarettes originated on the Kahnawake reserve in Quebec and appear to be part of a broader attempt by Rainbow Tobacco, a reservebased company, to market its tobacco in western Canadian provinces.

In February 2011, 100 cartons of cigarettes from Rainbow Tobacco were seized by tobacco enforcement officials in Saskatchewan. Similar seizures were undertaken this year in Alberta and British Columbia.

The Ministry of Finance may assess a penalty in the amount of three times the tax against anyone possessing tobacco in contravention of The Tobacco Tax Act, 1998. In addition, a person convicted of an offence under the Act may also be subject to a fine of up to $10,000 and in the case of a corporation, a fine of up to $50,000 may be imposed.

The provincial tobacco tax amounts to $42 per carton of cigarettes. The case remains under investigation.

2010-2011 Annual Baby Shower Submitted by Deborah Laliberte KYRHA, Kids First North and Community Action for Children hosted the annual community baby shower on March 31st, 2011 at the Arena Mezzanine, the turn-out was excellent. We had a total of 15 mothers and babies attend. There was a total of 25 babies that were born from March 31st, 2010 and March 29, 2011 that are resided in Beauval. We started the event off with a prayer done by Yvonne Roy and welcome each and everyone for attending this event. We had Chapan’s, Kokum’s, and Elders at the event. Elders are a very important part of community events as they can guide each and everyone of us to health and healing by Métis through listening to ancestral voices; a return to the Michif language; a greater awareness of the significance of the role of Métis woman and family to the health of communities; a better understanding of importance of our relationship to the environment for individual and community health and wellness; and an awareness of historical, cultural and Aboriginal language perspectives for understanding traditional cultural practices and protocols. (pimatisiwin.com) We had games for the participants and informational booths - Sandra Clarke - Diabetes Nurse Educator, Glenda Burnouf - Dental Therapist, Nancy Roy - Victim Services.

KYRHA and CAPC also hosted International Women’s Day on March 8th at the CAPC. We also had a really good turnout; we accommodated to the people as much as we could in such a small place, but are going to host the event in a larger place next year.

International Women’s Day (March 8) is a

global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. We started off with a meal and then read the letters that were submitted and were so touched because we have such awesome women in our community who are willing to give the shirts off their back to help someone out. The letters were submitted in the March 10th, 2011 CIPI Newsletter.

We would like to thank the following for their donation CIPI, Cameco, Areva, SIGA, Northern, MDeez, Northern Village of Beauval, Ornella Campbell, Valley View School and Polar Oils. Some of the items we did not use but have future events planned like our Mothers/Cancer Relay for life Walk on May 6 and Father’s Day Celebration on June 19. KYRHA will be hosting two workshops: Chronic Kidney Disease on April 21st 9am - 2pm at the Seniors Villa and Diabetes in the Community School Room at Valley View School on May 10, 2011 from 2 -4pm. If you have any workshops that you would like to see in the community please feel free to contact me at 288-4807.

Weight Loss Results We would like to thank all of the participants who participated in the weight loss challenge from February 15, 2011 to March 31st, 2011.
