ST MARY MAGDALENE PARISH Sunday February 26 2012 1st Sunday of Lent Gospel Mark 1:12-15 12 And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13He was in the wilderness for forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. 14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news* of God,* 15and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near;* repent, and believe in the good news.’*

Jesus' cry as he comes out of the desert. If we never stop believing, so we should never stop repenting. For the way to the kingdom of heaven is a continuous call to conversion. This is what repentance is for. Our pride and greed cause us to deceive ourselves about where we are on the journey to the kingdom; deceive ourselves about our own power to make the journey at all. ‘So this Lent: pray, fast and give alms - for it is God's gift of faith and conversion. ”Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for God is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” (Philippians 2.12f)’ Excerpt from a homily by Fr Bruno Clifton OP

Cap-C Events February 27 - March 2 Thoughts on the Gospel ‘Jesus' triumph over temptation at the end of his fast is rooted in his humility. All of Satan's weaponry is focused on appealing to humanity's false sense of independence. We think we are independent, can struggle on alone, can reach out to the tree of knowledge - can grasp at divinity. And this illusion comes from greed and pride. Putting our love of things before our love of God; obscuring our vision of God with our earthly desires; ignoring the needs of others in an inflated sense of our rights. ‘So, Jesus' forty days in the wilderness represents both humanity's dependence on God and the penitence required from the world. “Repent and believe in the Gospel”is

ANOTHER DROP IN THENUMBER OF EI RECIPIENTS IN SASKATCHEWAN The number of people in Saskatchewan receiving Employment Insurance (EI) dropped significantly in December, 2011, compared to the same month in 2010, for 21 consecutive months of year-over-year decreases. There were 10,050 beneficiaries receiving regular EI benefits in Saskatchewan, a decrease of 2,230 (18.2 per cent) from December 2010. Each of the province's eight large centres had year-over-year declines in the number of beneficiaries, with the largest occurring in Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw and Prince Albert. "With increases in average weekly earnings and a growing demand for skilled employees, Saskatchewan workers continue to benefit from a strong and steady economy," Advanced Education, Employment and Immigration Minister Rob Norris said. "There is good reason for optimism with many economic forecasters predicting that Saskatchewan will continue to be an economic leader in the year ahead." Saskatchewan's decrease in the number of EI recipients was the fourth best among provinces and was larger than the national decrease of 16.7 per cent. In Saskatchewan, 1.2 per cent of the labour force population received regular EI benefits in December compared to 1.9 per cent nationally, ranking Saskatchewan second lowest among provinces, behind Alberta at 1.0 per cent. "We are focused on keeping EI numbers moving in the right direction," Norris said. "With more than 9,800 jobs posted on SaskJobs.ca, there are many employment opportunities around the province for Saskatchewan job seekers."
