The rippling effects have caused entire industries to crumble, while most businesses that survived had to adapt by rethinking their processes, switching to working from home and changing the way customers interact with their business. The year of 2020 is a test, and those who cannot adapt will most probably not survive in the long run.

Permanent Changes

Companies are starting to move customer interactions to the online space: replacing paper files and forms with online documents, taking advantage of the many electronic signature technologies. Every single paper, from surveys to contracts and invoices can now be legally stored electronically, which also brings an ecological advantage. Software companies started this trend, and now everyone else is forced to follow.

While most people see the current situation as a “temporary crysis”, I believe the world will never be the same. The impact that the COVID-19 disease has on the business world has shook the foundation of so many industries, and it's very probable that it won't be the only pandemic during our lifetime. usinesses have always been focused on technological advancements that can propel productivity forward, eliminate redundancies and reduce waste.

But while that's the goal on paper, enterprises don't always know how to make it a reality. Faced with too many choices, they might think it's best to wait it out and see which path is the best way forward.

That, however, may not yield the results that businesses are after, particularly when talking about artificial intelligence (AI). Accenture reported that threefourths of organizations could go out of business if they fail to scale AI. That highlights the urgency with which businesses must act in order to stay ahead of the curve. Accounting firm Grant Thornton shared a similar sentiment, arguing that if privately held businesses don't move first and utilize technologies like AI and automation today, they will miss out on their “biggest advantage.”
