WELCOME Euregion Film Festival 2020
DARE & ENDURE
The film business is a daring one. Just as in a real life, sometimes we are asked to summon up all our courage to take a step, maybe a first one, which is always the hardest. Once we dared to take this step, we have to keep going, no matter which obstacles might get in our way. We have to stay focussed, strong, we have to endure. For the fifth-year anniversary of the Euregion Film Festival, we took this motto to our heart and created a program for all new and professional filmmakers, but also the regular audience. During the four-day festival, filmmakers are stimulated to dare creating new projects, meeting like-minded creators, who are on a similar path to making their dream come true and endure the ups & downs of the filmmaking process by attending activities such as the Script and Producers Lab, the Writers Rooms Fiction and Documentary or the Pitching Forum including a Pitch Training. Moreover, film lovers who have not (yet) created their own film are invited to watch Short Film Competition & feature films, listen to CineTalks and Q&A sessions with invited filmmakers and have a chat at the networking events. Believe in yourself, don’t give up, stay individual - Dare and Endure!

SHORT FILM COMPETITION(ENG) Euregion Film Festival is proud to present nine short films that were selected to this year’s Short Film Competition! Come and watch daring and enduring short films that will compete for the Best Short, the Youth Jury Award, the Special Mention prize, the Special Jury Award and the Audience Award. The pre-selection for the Official Competition has been done by Alexander Gusev (Euregion Film Festival programmer). Gßnter H. Jekubzik (German film critic), Kato De Boeck (Belgian scriptwriter and director) and Pascal Essers (projection coordinator, Filmhuis de Spiegel) have been decision makers on selecting the final program.

When Ronnie gives up a tad too much personal information on his computer he receives a fully customised invitation from his OS in return. After accepting the offer his OS takes over his computer, forcing Ronnie to do everything in his power to keep his dark desires a secret for his approaching girlfriend.

PROFESSIONAL JURY The following professionals will decide on the Best Short and Special Jury Award.
Karel Deburchgrave (Belgian Film Critic) xxx is a film critic and the chairman of the Belgian film monthly Filmmagie. Most of his reviews are published in Dutch in this monthly magazine, which was founded in 1956. Karel Deburchgrave has been a member of, among others, Karlovy Vary (2008), Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (2011), Prix Italia Torino (2011), Hong Kong (2012), Montreal (2012), Berlin (2014), Film Fest Washington DC (2015) and Singapore (2019). Karel Deburchgrave also gives lectures on film at film museums and universities.

Joyce Spijker (Dutch Author, Scriptwriter) was born in Heerlen and is the author of a couple of successful books such as her debut novel Spotlight (2013), the thriller In de Familie (2016) or her newly published thriller Volg Me (2019). At the moment she is working on screenplays for, among others, Dutch Film Works, Maya Media, Flikken Maastricht, Netflix as well as a television series based on her book Volg Me.
Wisam Zureik (German Filmmaker) is a filmmaker born in Nazareth, now living in in the Euregion, in Aachen. After having started computer science studies he changed to a Media Design degree in Cologne. His graduation film Woher kommst du? was nominated for the Kรถlner Designpreis. He specified in the field of documentary filmmaking and his documentary Bunte Blumen was nominated for the Deutscher Menschenrechtspreis. In 2018 he received the honor Future Impact Maker.

YOUTH JURY The Youth Jury will decide on the Youth Jury Award.
Martine Pinckaers (14) is a student at the Bernard Lievegoed School Maastricht. She loves to perform in front of an audience and is now taking classes at Kumulus Maastricht. Martine has already played in the CineSud Talent Production All There Is as well as in Voor Galg en Rad. Nhi Nguygen (15) is a high school student from Aachen, Germany, who has artistic hobbies such as dancing and drawing. Ever since she was little she liked movies as the different characters and scenarios always had the power to create different emotions in her. Her favorite genres are action and thriller because they make her feel excited.

Emilia Pßtz (17) attends the municipal high school in Herzogenrath. She is very interested in every kind of art and she has always loved video art. In her free time she likes to play tennis and paint. Valentin Birkelbach (20) is in his first semester of his bachelor, studying civil engineering at RWTH Aachen University. He was born in Santiago de Chile and spent 6 years of his life living in Chile before moving to Germany with his parents. His everyday activities include going to university, swimming and meeting friends. Ever since he can think of, he has been fascinated by cinema and movies. If his time scale allows it, he loves going to film festivals or open-air cinemas. Muriel Bujotzek (16) attends the Städtische Gymnasium in Herzogenrath. Muriel is also currently participating in a literature course in which films are being evaluated and analysed and the participants are also actively creating visual content themselves.

He brags about the date to his friends but it turns out that this is a fantasy and he is bragging against the police. They confront him with a burning question: what really happened that night? On her nocturnal journey she finds herself compelled to ask for and give help to the other inhabitants of the night.

INDUSTRY EVENTS PITCHING FORUM (ENG)
21 March | 16:15 - 17:35 | Royal Theater Heerlen During this Pitching Forum 13 filmmakers dare to tell the world about their film idea and compete for different prices. Five filmmakers will pitch an idea for a short film for which they can win the main prize of €2.000. Next to that, the three Producers Lab participants will introduce their production company or pitch a film project they are working on at the moment. The five ScriptLab 2019 participants will pitch the feature film projects they have been working on during the last year’s ScriptLab sessions. The main price for the winning Producers and ScriptLab participant is to be a participant of Talents to Cannes program, organised by CineSud.

PITCHING FORUM PARTICIPANTS: SHORT FILMS Pitching Forum prize: ₏2.000. Paalspoort, Lisa de Bye A documentary about Demi Brama, aerialist and multiple pole sport winner. Follow Demi Brama on her way to the Dutch Championship Pole Sport 2020. What does it mean being involved with this unique strength sport? Diesel, Chris Dings & Rowan Sonneville Ayoub, gangster-to-be, gets the chance to get involved with the big boys, but he soon finds out that he, and his overenthusiastic friend Bilal are way in over their heads. The Change, Bas Geelen & Vincent Konings A young woman returns to her remote family home with good news. Shortly after her arrival, she notices that her elderly mother is behaving strangely. Is she age demented or is something else wrong with her? Februarium, John Summerson A documentarian’s research materials come to life as he attempts to tell the story of the made-up holiday about biscuits, beer, and tree-bludgeoning that defined his early twenties.

Echo, Roy van Kessel After being diagnosed with acute retinitis pigmentosa (accelerated vision loss), a widowed airport border patrol officer decides to go find his long lost son, given up for adoption at age 3 which is now more than 30 years ago. Emma, Nicole Jachmann While Tessel (14) is looking forward to the summer, discovering her first love and going on a big trip, she finds out that her mom has been holding a secret from everyone: she works as a prostitute. Having lost her faith in her mother, Tessel needs to find a way to restore the bond with her, while learning to deal with a secret.

The Final Girl, Tim Sagl Victor, an old man in a retirement home dealing with dementia, thinks he might be a killer from a popular slasher series of the 80s. When a new nurse hits the home, Victor thinks she might be the final girl that ended his film career. Obstructed through his age and illness, Victor tries to kill the last girl, just as back in the days of which he thinks that he was a masked killer. Or maybe he really was...

C Amazing Films, Charlotte Driessen Charlotte Driessen has studied International Media & Entertainment Management at the University of Applied Sciences in Breda. She has worked in several positions in the film industry already. Everstory, Michael van den Eynde Michael van den Eynde has worked for several successful production companies and cultural institutions. In 2013 he founded the Belgian production and service company Everstory, seated in Genk, Brussels and Antwerp which develops mainly film, documentary and television productions. Locations With Groove, Ruggero di Virgiliis In the last years Ruggero de Virgiliis has worked on several Italian as well as German television and film productions both as a director and as a producer. In 2015 he founded the company Locations with Groove. The winners of the Pitching Forum will be announced during the program Made in Limburg & Award Show on March 21 at 20:00.

SCRIPTLAB 2020 Following the success of the ScriptLab 2019, CineSud is launching the second edition of the very first development program of the Netherlands for first feature scripts. Starting in March, the 8-months feature film development program enables script writers to finish their stories from the stage of the initial idea. The course features two multiday residence-sessions with writers rooms, lectures, discussions, online sessions with script consultants, networking and pitching sessions during film festivals such as the Euregion Film Festival.
FEEDBACK SESSION: SYNOPSIS (NL) 19 March | 10:00 - 13:00 | ScriptLab 2020 Residence At the first session of the ScriptLab 2020 the participants will start with getting feedback from three professionals (a producer, film director and scriptwriter) who will be giving 20-min of feedback per project, while the writers will be listening and taking notes in order to prepare for the revision that will take place later the same day. SHORTS LAB The Shorts Lab is especially for filmmakers who work on their first or second short film production. The program does not only offer coachings and advisory support but also production budgets for selected film projects.
WRITERS ROOM FICTION 21 March | 10:00 - 17:00 | Carbon 6 - M314 Every year CineSud organizes the Writers Room - Fiction. Up to six participants are given the opportunity to bring their script and project plan to a higher level in intensive group coachings led by an industry professional. Together, difficulties and challenges are discussed and solutions are sought. By doing this in groups, the participants learn from each other and each others’ challenges and they also learn to work analytically and purposefully. In this last session, together with coach Ibo Karatay, the participants discuss the progress of their work and add the last finishing touches to their developed film ideas.

GUESTS & COACHES PITCH JURY Reinier Selen (Producer) has produced national and international (co-)productions, including the acclaimed films Rafaël, Van God Los, Cool Kids Don’t Cry, Nothing Personal, Lucia de B. and Süskind. His co-production Rafiki has been in the Un Certain Regard competition at Cannes Film Festival 2018. Toon Hezemans (Chairman CineSud) is the chairman of CineSud since April 2017. Toon is also the director of the Dutch Mountain Film Festival and works as an artist himself. Next to that, Toon holds other executive positions at (h)ear, Images at the Vrijthof and Greylight Projects. Moniek Kramer (Scriptwriter) wrote and directed around twenty stage performances and a dozen scripts among which the cinema film Accused is one. She also worked on telefilms, short films and television series such as Rembrandt en Ik. She is a coach for the ScriptLab 2019 program.

Guido Franken (Limburg Film Commissioner) is the Managing Director of CineSud since January 2013. In addition to this work, which he executes part-time, Guido holds a part-time position as Limburg Film Commissioner within the Limburg Film Office foundation.
COACHES Harro van Staverden (Producer) started his career as a producer in 1995 with a strong focus on youth and family content. By now he is known for, among other things, the television series Circus NoÍl and Tien Torens Diep as well as the feature films Secrets of War, Cool Kids Don’t Cry and Code M. Hein van Joolen (Distributor) is the co-founder of the film distribution company Gusto Entertainment. With the start of his own company, he clearly set himself one goal: getting more people to watch (Dutch) films in the cinema. Ibo Karatay (Producer) is a member of Rinkel Film since 2015 where he works as a development executive and producer. He is also the co-owner of Alchemic Film. The company develops and produces short as well as feature films.

Jolein Laarman (Scriptwriter) worked as a production designer on a variety of different feature films and television productions before she realised that writing is her real passion. Since then she has written many different television films, series, shorts and feature films such as the feature films Broos, Tussenstand, Het Zusje van Katia, Among Us, Little Bird, Disappearance, which won many national as well as international prizes. Marietta von Hausswolff (Screenwriter) is a Swedish screenwriter for TV and film, and an international script consultant whose work over the last 11 years includes, among others, Sundance Labs, TorinoFilmLab, Binger Amsterdam, Biennale College Venice, Tiff Studio Toronto FF and Talent Campus Berlinale. Nathalie Crum (Director) attended the Dutch Film Academy of Amsterdam where she graduated in the department of Directing Documentary in 2014. Her third-year film De Goede Vrede was screened at DOK.fest 2014 in MĂźnchen and was nominated for the Megaherz Filmschool Award. In the last years documentaries such as Ten and De Belofte van Slek followed.

Neeltje van der Heijden (Post-Production Supervisor) started working in film post-production in 2006. She became a freelance post production supervisor in 2015. She has worked mainly on international co-produced features projects like: Heartbound by Janus Metz (documentary), Gold by Rogier Hesp and Je teraz Klamie by Pawel Borowski. She is currently working on the Norwegian/ Czech/Dutch feature Dragon Girl. Niko Remus (Post-Production Supervisor) works as a freelance post-production supervisor and a workflow consultant. He mostly works on international projects – fiction and documentary films for cinema release. His projects in the recent years include: Bal – Honey by Semih Kaplanoglu, Hannah Arendt by Margarethe von Trotta, Only Lovers Left Alive by Jim Jarmusch, A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence by Roy Andersson and 55 Steps by Bille August. Ronald van der Kolk (Cameraman) started working as a freelance cameraman at DutchView in 2006. In 2008 Ronald was asked to join Team Facilities, which in 2011 continued as DutchView and in 2016 as NEP. After 10 years of working, he started his freelance career under the name Ronald VAN DER KOLK IMAGES. Over the years he has done many productions in sports, shows, concerts and news programs, for example The Voice of Holland, Jinek, Champions League etc.
