Stay in the kitchen while you're frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you must leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove and move any oil or fat pans off the stove. Keep anything that can catch fire (oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, towels, etc.) away from your stovetop, including your apron or any long-sleeved shirt. Protect little ones from burns, keep them out of the kitchen while you're cooking. Have you checked your smoke detectors???? Do it now … they just might save a life in the case of an emergency. Don’t risk your home and most important your family and friends. See you have alarms on every level of your home especially near sleeping areas.

BBQ’s Barbeques are always a great way of people getting together. Gas bottles should always be checked to see that they are not leaking gas. See that the BBQ is placed away from the foot traffic. Always have a bucket of water or a hose handy. Alcohol and BBQs are not a good combination. People who are in party mood and drinking should not be in charge of the BBQ. Keep children away from the cooking area. Common sense is required which will prevent accidents happening. Food: Make sure you take all precautions with the food as BBQs are a good way of contracting food poisoning.

Keep food covered, Make sure your food is cooked properly.

Don’t leave food in the heat of the day Flys love uncovered food.

DRINK DRIVING We have all been warned about drink driving.

We all know we are not to drink & drive …!!!

As the ads on the TV say …. DON’T BE A BLOODY IDIOT! Have your partys enjoy your friends and celebrate Christmas but use your brains and organise your travel home or stay at your friend’s place.

Taxis are available and in the end are cheaper than a drink driving ticket, loss of licence or living with the fact you have injured or killed another person.

Remember if you kill another person or yourself you HURT & WRECK so many people’s lives.

PARTY SAFE Hey it’s party season that means fun times with friends. It’s great to be out having fun BUT party safe!!! Don’t think it can’t happen to you. People do spike drinks … Never leave your drink unattended. Unless you know who is buying your drink get it yourself.

Contacts: Always have emergency numbers with you. Parents, Friends, Emergency no: 111, Taxi numbers. Always let family know where you are and who you are with.

Drink: Don’t drink and drive… make sure you have a sober driver or order a taxi. Don’t get in a car with someone that has been drinking. Make sure you have money in case you need a taxi.

ID: Always carry your ID so in an emergency you can be identified and family contacted if needed. Keep your ID safe.

Mobile Phone: Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged … put your ID detail on your phone, Keep your mobile on you at all times in case you need it.

Drink: Monitor your drink intake. Intoxication puts you in a vulnerable place for danger (disputes, rape, Alcatraz lockup) Don’t make an idiot of yourself that you can’t remember and regret. Carry some morals with you while out having fun. don't scull or mix your drinks.

Groups: You are far more safe by staying in groups or with a friend. Take extra care if out on your own.

Spiking Drinks: Buy your own drink. Don’t leave your drink un-attended!!! Keep your drink in sight at all. times and know who is around you. Don’t share drinks this can be a danger. It could be spiked

(Don’t think it can’t happen to you) Are You Going On Holiday? Is Your Home Safe & Secure?

Here are just a few reminders of keeping your home safe while you are away.

Many home are broken into so it is important to take steps to secure your home.

Have you thought about having someone you can trust to live in your home while you are away.

Don’t advertise to everyone that you are going away… don’t share your holiday before you go on facebook.

Have a security system put into your home and/or display a sign on your windows so it can be seen See that your window and door locks are all working … locking your home properly can help to deter burglars Make sure you know who has keys and access to your home.

Get your neighbour or a friend to keep your mail box empty and open and shut your gate for you.

Disconnect power to your appliances for example TV, Dryers Washing machines, Radios, Computers and so on.

Holidays are meant to be relaxing fun and happy times with family and friends.

Trespassing an unwanted person.

If a person is not welcome, the most common trespass is where you give the person a written notice stating they are trespassed from the property or premises. It is dated, name of the person trespassed, the place of trespass is noted and a reason signed by the person trespassing the offender. You then send a copy of the trespass to the police where it is lodged. If that person comes back to the property or premises you then ring and report it to the police, they then deal with the offending person.

A verbal trespass is where you verbally trespass a person from the property or premises. You forward the details to the police to lodge and if the offender returns you ring the police to deal with the situation.

Anybody can trespass a person from their property or premises.

Babysitters If you are going out and getting babysitters make sure you know who you are leaving with your children. It is better if the children know the babysitter so they feel secure and safe. See they have your contact numbers in case there is a problem. Make sure they have the house locked for safety. Leave the emergency numbers by the phone in case there is an emergency with the child they are babysitting (fire police ambulance… your numbers, neighbours/friends number …) what to do in the case of fire. Make sure the sitter understands your instructions … you are trusting them with your children.

Welcome to Old Grumpy’s Gallery and Welcome to 2015. Bob and Verena would like to wish you all a very Happy, Healthy and Successful New Year…. 2014 had been a landmark year for us. We have both been blessed with good health that has allowed us to attend to being “Old Grumpys” for each and every business day of the past year.

We continue to establish our unique emporium and are delighted with the ever increasing numbers of customers who visit us many of whom have become wonderful friends.

Many people comment that we must be pleased when the cruise ships are in port…. Whereas it is very nice to have these magnificent vessels in port.. In truth we don’t really see any significant increase in daily sales. In fact what is noticeable is that many of our regular customers don’t seem to come into town when the cruise ships are here. However we are delighted to receive cruise ship passengers and crew into Old Grumpy’s Gallery….Many becoming regular customers…

Apart from our regular local customers, the most rewarding “ tourist trade” we receive comes from national holiday makers and weekenders, many of whom have become regulars and make their way to Old Grumpy’s Gallery as soon as they hit town.. Mainly they come to stock up on good reading material from our vast stocks of pre-loved books. Where surely we have the best value dollar for dollar on books anywhere in New Zealand NEW CAMERA FOR CHRISTMAS ...

Don’t forget there is more to Old Grumpy’s than pre-loved books. We set up our business around Bob’s photography skills… We are holding new photography schools in the coming weeks and are taking bookings now, either for one on one tutoring or group classes. (See our announcement elsewhere in this newsletter). Not only will we teach you to make snapshots into great shots, most importantly we will teach you how to use and control your camera.

Many people believe that Domestic violence is only physical abuse. However, Domestic violence takes many different forms. It may also be psychological, sexual, financial or spiritual violence.

Physical Violence includes hitting, pinching, spitting, slapping, pushing, punching, kicking, burning, stabbing, strangulation, suffocating & shooting. It may also include threats to cause harm Psychological Violence (sometimes referred to as emotional or verbal abuse) includes put-downs, name calling, jealousy, harassing, screaming, using degrading language, insults, criticism, harming pets or animals, isolation from family and friends, and threats to leave the relationship or to commit suicide if the victim does not co-operate Sexual Violence includes unwanted touching or sexual activity, raping and forcing victim into unwanted sexual practices. It may include control over birth control, forced pregnancies or abortions and transmission of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) Financial Violence occurs when an individual uses finances to control another individual. This could include forcing a person to hand over all or part of their salary or by denying someone access to their own finances, making victim ask or beg for money, forceful removal of money from victim Spiritual Violence occurs when an individual uses religious or spiritual matters to control another, such as forcing another to follow a particular faith or give up their religion or justifying their violence as religiously and spiritually acceptable The book Alcoholics Anonymous, the basic text of A.A., says: "We alcoholics are men and women who lost the ability to control our drinking. We know that no real alcoholic ever recovers control. All of us felt at times that we were regaining control, but such intervals - usually brief - were inevitably followed by still less control, which led in time to pitiful and incomprehensible de-moralisation."

Buying a Laptop Pt 2 Last month I talked about buying a laptop. You may have noticed that I did not cover some of the details such as Apple vs Windows, Chromebook, etc.

Apple make some well designed laptops that are fundamentally about ease of use with the ability to work with any Apple accessory. That means you can spend more time using the laptop and less time trying to make it work. The downside is it costs more.

MS Windows has a huge base of users. And while the process of keeping the laptop working, and getting any accessories to work has got easier over time, it can still be a frustrating experience. But, when everything is working, then everyone is happy. Price can vary quite a bit depending on what is included, and not included, and the quality of the included items.

Chromebooks are relatively new, and as the name might suggest it comes from Google. Predominately designed for internet cloud based activity, although other functionality is possible. I’d highly recommend testing one fully before purchasing to ensure it is what you want.

You can also run various forms of Linux on laptops, as well as Android. However, may I suggest that those that wish to do so would not be reading this column.

Finally, as I said last month, talk to the sales people. Tell them about what you need the laptop for and what you want to run on it.

Think about their suggestions. Visit other stores if you’re not 100% sure on what to get.

Remember, you are the buyer and you are in control.

The kitten season is now in full swing, for us silly season is our kitten season and coincidentally they both are at the same time of the year. We currently have over 100 kittens at the shelter or in foster homes and this number is quickly growing, they are being well cared for by wonderful people who have opened their homes and hearts to having very cute families of either mum and kittens or orphaned kittens to care for. Over the next few weeks and months these kittens and many more will return to the shelter to be placed for adoption, so that we can find them a loving forever home and the 2nd chance that they deserve.

Already we have had quite a few 8 week old kittens in adoption and it really is a first in first served scenario as they have only lasted in adoption a very short time – totally irresistible; from now on we will have plenty of kittens all ready to go being placed in adoption, the variety changing with each new adoption, so please remember to come and see us; make the Tauranga SPCA your first choice for a new family member. We will have a variety of choices of colours, long hair, short hair, ages, personalities so many that you will struggle to choose your new family member; and in your struggle to choose will end up with two – we have seen that happen many a time.

The best thing about adopting a new four legged family member from the Tauranga SPCA is that they have already been vet checked, had flea and worm treatment, a vaccination, they have been de-sexed, micro-chipped and their details with yours (when you adopt) will be registered on the NZ Companion Animal register. We do have an adoption fee of $115.00 per kitten and $105.00 per adult cat, this fee helps us towards the costs of the above necessities, which is what they are necessities to ensure the best start for your new friend and when you take your new family member home the only thing you need to worry about is showering them with love.

Its that time year when we start to clean up round the place so off to the dump we went and while we were paying at the booth I looked across and it hit me. The bins of fizz drink bottles, wine bottles and booze/fizz cans, it’s great that we recycle but it made me realize how serious it is the amount of crap we are putting into our bodys, and then we wonder why we have health issues and we are over weight. Hey and I am no exception to this as I sure put enough crap through my lips and yes I moan about the weight I am carrying. Maybe just take a moment to think about your recycling and what is in it and how much crap your family is consuming.

Think about what you are feeding your children, what is their weight, are you putting them and yourself at risk of diabetes.

We all know here in New Zealand we have become obese, unfit, and unhealthy. We all know it is up to each individual to control what you put in your mouth. However young children eat what the adults supply to them and they don’t understand that crap food is not good for them because it tastes so good and it’s what is being dished up to them.

This photo is just the fizz bottles, when you next go to the dump just stop for a moment and look at the bins … its shocking to think we humans consume so much.

This makes me think of Nigel Latta’s show on sugar So much sugar in our food and we don’t even know we are eating it. Nigel says for us to improve our health, weight and fitness we need to refrain from eating foods with sugar.

Cut ALL soft drinks and sugared drinks, lollies, sweets, chocolates etc biscuits, cakes, muffins, slices, buns, bakery products, cheesecakes, etc. .desert foods: ice-cream, frozen desserts, sugary puddings breakfast cereals – most cereals are made from highly refined grains, with a lot of added sugar.

Cut down on refined grain products, that is foods made from white flour refined grains (cereals, bread and bakery products) as these turn into glucose very quickly during digestion.

Because we have eaten so much junk food for so long we think it would be too hard to stop. I guess this is a decision for each individual to make on how much you love life and want to live longer and feel healthy and of course look good.

So it’s a new year and many of us make New Year Resolutions how about putting healthy eating on your list for you and your family. Don’t go cold turkey by trying to cut everything out … take small tangible steps to achieve your goal.

Raise the cost of crap food and bring down the cost of good healthy food so people buy wise and eat healthier.

Family Works Northern’s WAVE (Women against Violence Education) programme helps women become aware of the dynamics of domestic violence and builds their strength to make positive decisions for themselves and their families.

Often the women who attend the first few sessions are apprehensive, simply because of the fear of the unknown. When working alongside women who have experienced domestic violence, it’s important to have true empathy and a non-judgmental approach -a “heart for the people”.

It is a privilege, as a facilitator of the programme, to witness the growing self-esteem and confidence of each courageous woman who attends. WAVE runs for two hours once a week for 14 weeks.

Reporting child abuse

NEW Alcohol Laws:

Anyone can report suspected child abuse in this country and people who call Child, Youth and Family can ask to remain anonymous. Even if an investigation results in no abuse being found the law will protect you if you disclosed or supplied information in good faith.

Fear of being wrong is the single most common reason people might decide not to act. People feel this way because they might be afraid of: Repercussions - being thought insensitive - breaking a confidence - being disloyal.

One of the best ways to overcome this fear is to equip ourselves with good knowledge and to discuss concerns early with an appropriate person.

You can use the Child, Youth and Family freephone – 0508 326 459 – to sound out your concerns.

If you are concerned that a child or young person is being abused, remember that their safety and wellbeing comes first.

When you are reporting a concern, Child, Youth and Family will need to know as much as possible about the situation. Useful details include the name, age and ethnicity of the child or young person, the address where the child or young person can be found, and as much about the abuse or your concerns as possible.

We are now heading into our busiest time of the year - ki en season; when a dedicated group of people dust off their cages, wash bedding, bowls and li er trays, then take a deep breath in preparation for the incoming deluge of unwanted and generally dumped pregnant cats, mother cats and ki ens or li ers of young ki ens.

These people are the Tauranga SPCA foster families who care for these ki ens until they are old enough to be adopted – usually about 8 weeks old. These kind people willingly and lovingly give up hours of each day for weeks, and in a number of cases, months, to look after the dozens of unwanted animals. All animals are fed, toileted, groomed given lots of play and love before being se led down in a comfy bed for a snooze until the whole cycle starts again – too often our precious resources are used up caring for these poor unfortunate cast-offs, giving them a second chance at life, and a new forever home.

Most of these animals are friendly – obviously once treasured pets. A number of the mother cats are young probably their first li er. Many animals are scared, starving, confused and some have almost given up on life – wouldn’t you if you were suddenly cast out of your warm comfortable home, into the gu er, pregnant, or with youngsters depending on you for survival.

We couldn’t get through the summer ki en season if it wasn’t’ for our foster families, last year we had hundreds of ki ens in foster which would be impossible for us to house at the shelter so you can imagine how important our fosters are and why we always need more. DON’T BE THE ONE WHO REGRETS YOUR ACTION BY LEAVING OTHERS GRIEVING Think about PEOPLE Children, Mums, Dads, Friends

Email: ccsbopcommunitynewsletter@gmail.com (Page 12) Toughlove I’ve been a regular in CC’s for a while now, and this time I’m going to stretch the rules and talk about the Toughlove programme which I am a national trainer for. Toughlove has been around for some time now and it has lots of myths around it, I’d like to burst a few misconceptions about the programme. Toughlove is by parents for parents, we no longer work with children/teenagers/youth/or other people causing the parent grief. We help the parent figure out what their problem is and what THEY can do about it..

Toughlove will never tell a parent what to do, if you hear a parent start by saying ‘they went to Toughlove and they were told……’ they weren’t*, there may have been miscommunication in the intent to suggest some choices a parent could make. It is for the parent to decide what they can do about THEIR problem, and parents are like people, they come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and ability to respond to a problem. For some parents it can take ages to move from their position, they are simply processing the situation in their speed, and often while they are figuring out what they can do about problem A, the other party has moved through to problems X,Y,& Z! (*sometimes to cover everyone’s backside parents are strongly suggested to phone the police for the safety of themselves or others) Toughlove does not recommend throwing kids out on the street; it does support age appropriate consequences and encourages parents to uphold those. Sometimes Toughlove can support a parent while the youth figures out that it’s time to leave home and that can be quite traumatic for both parents and offspring. We do not believe that parents, or anyone, should be forced to live with, or contend with unacceptable behaviour.

Toughlove is a group meeting process, Toughlove cannot be ‘done individually ‘as it takes a village to raise a child it may take a group to support a parent to deal and cope with unacceptable adolescent type behaviour. There is no course to attend, no prescribed programme to follow as Toughlove is not just an education programme. Toughlove does do some education about its programme, the law, parenting theories, and lots of other things, but then we expect a parent to then do some work and figure out what they are going to do for the coming week and make a commitment to do that as well as make a telephone call to another parent from the group (all hush hush secret squirrel stuff) to support them.

As there is no prescribed course there is no waiting lists, a parent can start at any of the 50 meetings that are held here in Tauranga during the course of a year. The meetings are very cost effective at $25.00 for a one time only purchase parents pack (thanks to ANZ staff foundation), a gold coin each meeting attended, and $20.00 per year after the first year.

DIABETES AND HOT WEATHER Although most of us enjoy the summer weather and being outdoors, rising temperatures and high humidity can affect people with diabetes and cause issues with blood glucose control, testing and medications.

WHAT PROBLEMS CAN HOT WEATHER CAUSE? Dehydration from increased sweating: higher blood glucose levels can also increase the risk further. Hypoglycaemia. Hot and humid weather can increase the risk of hypoglycaemia and the symptoms may be more difficult to notice. Keeping insulin cool when travelling around. If insulin becomes too warm it will not work effectively resulting in high blood glucose levels. Blood glucose testing strips are sensitive to temperature so need to be kept out of direct sunlight.

HOW CAN I PREVENT PROBLEMS? Make sure you: Increase your fluid intake in hot weather and choose water rather than other drinks. Don’t disregard hypo symptoms. Sweating and tiredness may be the onset of a hypo and not just due to hot weather. Keep your insulin in a cool pack and out of direct sunlight. Don’t leave it in the car during the summer as the temperatures inside the car can rise extremely high. Make sure you test your blood glucose levels more frequently if you are more active than usual particularly if you are swimming and doing water sports.
