CINDY HE PORTFOLIO

ISSUE 03 - SELECTED WORKS

Hello,

I’m Cindy; let’s get to know each other! c69he@uwaterloo.ca +1 (647) 308-8310

I am a third year student at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. I’m passionate about the profound impact of our surroundings. Our everyday lives happen within the walls, windows, and ceilings of our home, school, and various spaces we enter. It is there that we form friendships, build communities, and collectively grow as individuals. I aspire to contribute to spaces that foster meaningful human connections and promote accessibility and inclusion beyond conventional norms. My work explores the intersection of care and architecture, aiming to intentionally shape lives through thoughtful design. I am eager to grow, improve my skills, and gain new perspectives on our vast world while contributing to your team and our success.

LANGIAN HOUSING

Located in Cambridge Ontario, Langian Housing aims to densify a currently underutilized block and thereby create a new space for those who “belong” and those who “don’t belong”. Through various research, the manifesto of Langian Housing follows the principles of civic engagement, socioeconomic mixing, environmental sustainability, and value creation. The project aims to morphing and transform foriegn spaces by creating a deep sense of home. Drawing from personal experience, as children of immigrants, there has always seemed to be this recurring adversity of balancing our intersectional identities. The residence hopes not only to open the dialogue to our diverse backgrounds, but also frame and facilitate a safe space to explore the complexities of this emotional type of housing alienation. SAFS LIBRARY + GREENHOUSE

02

Located close to Queens Street East and Davis Avenue, the SAFS Library + Greenhouse acts as a library and local food hub: a place for the community to gather, share, and connect. The greenhouse is placed on the street side of the site facing the cityscape with planters for root vegetables, vines, seedlings, and aquaponics. The centrepiece of the building lies in the atrium filled with potted plants that extend up to the secondfloor seating space, giving continuity to the greenery. The light steel framing on the South West facade of the building transitions into the wood cladding, which emphasizes the heaviness and lightness of the structure and plays into the overall theme of creating an ambience of material contrast.

RE: LOCATE

Re: Locate is an exploration of the landscape through the lens of individuals who live with a physical and/or mental disability, specifically dementia. The demographic stands from looking at this dichotomy between the vast landscape and a confined room in senior homes or care centers. Questioning how we take people in a typically urban, institutionalized setting and provide them with a refreshing, healing, and comforting place. The landscape, especially the one at French River, is made for able-bodied people; thus, this experience of the landscape is an inaccessible luxury. Simply put, dementia can be compared to losing photos from a memory album, a slow decline of your identity and losing yourself. This impermanence is also seen in our ever-changing land. This project tells the story of a place for seniors to find peace, acceptance, and serenity. The villages are composed of smaller communities programmed for easy navigation and feature clear pathways and familiar landmarks. Analyzing existing Dementia and Alzheimer’s villages, there seems to be a commonality in program placements in which the residential rooms were 1) close to smaller staff and service rooms and 2) separated from large communal spaces made for daily activities. The common areas are accessible and promote social interaction adjacent to smaller quiet areas. There is also a larger presence of open outdoor and green spaces scattered throughout the villages: gardens, courtyards, pathways, etc., allowing the patients to wander freely and safely.

After a long day, the Gallery is one of my favourate rooms. There are so many wonderful photos.

I WON BINGO! Normally I don’t stay, but this is great! I want to wonder around a bit until someone comes to take me to bed.

I like the quiet places and my alone time. I’m so sleepy. Where is my bed?

The staff also tries to spend some time outside. We find the greenery and sounds help calm the patients.

I like to spend the afternoon socializing and working to say healthy!

7PM

After dinner, we bring Greg to socialize with others and sit through reminisce therapy. At 8, the night staff swap in and Greg goes to bed.

Tonight, there was a BINGO game after dinner! I hope I win something this time!

I spend my evening winding down by looking at some old photographs and taking a nice walk beofre bed.

This 2x2’ model takes a natural phenomenon near the banks of the French River and abstracts it using various materials and mechanisms. The wood panels are held together by metal sliders that emulate weathering and erosion, which cause the rock to crack and break. The valley creates a miniature ecosystem that supports the moss and trees. Langley Design Proposal The Langley design proposal was commissioned by a corporation that owned this 13-acre land, hoping to transform it into an urban hub. I worked closely with the team throughout the process to create the set of drawings shown below for client presentations starting from modeling the site and existing massings to building, rendering, and compiling our proposal. I was also able to contribute landscape ideas and potential changes to the design.

44

East Vancouver Development During the last half of my internship, I was heavily involved in the massing and development of this project where the team and I were tasked with making iterations of the three tower massings, facade, and canopy design. We utilized Rhino and Lumion to create drawings and diagrams for slideshow presentations and updates for the partners, clients, and developers. I had the opportunity to work through and propose my ideas which were greatly received. The latter half of my time was spent 3D printing these design iterations for future meetings.
