GREETINGS! This was another year of adaptation, education and innovation. While we missed the busloads of kids pouring into the museum and bustling rotunda, we learned that it’s possible to carry out our mission in new ways. Whether it was creating a meaningful, transformative Youth Leadership Day experience for middle school students, hosting our weekly Holocaust Speaker Series or bringing thousands to the museum virtually, we made an impact. As you will see throughout this annual report, with your support we managed to reach tens of thousands of individuals in our community and beyond. In addition to reaching new audiences with our programming, we also managed to create new experiences: • We launched the #CincyUpstander Project, which included an inspiring city-wide street art campaign. • We expanded the museum with new technology adding the Dimensions in Testimony Gallery, an exhibit available at only eight other museums in the world. • We created a new program called Hate at Home in partnership with the Jewish Community Relations Council to combat antisemitism and hate. Schools, community organizations and universities have engaged in these workshops. • We piloted new training opportunities for law enforcement to learn about the role of police in Nazi Germany and reflect on their role in a democratic society today. • We created new virtual experiences that remove geographic boundaries. • We responded to acts of hate, antisemitism and racism through programming, advocacy and bringing the community together. • We stepped up to live up to our mission of action by housing the Greater Cincinnati Coalition Against Hate. While we are hopeful that we will be able to offer more in-person experiences this school year and see the return of school busses and community groups, we are also comforted to know that no matter what, our work continues. Thank you for joining us in this effort. Together, we can ensure the lessons of the Holocaust inspire action. Warmly,
Sarah L. Weiss, Executive Director/CEO The Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center
David Wise, Board Chair The Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center
“ I do not want to be a bystander. I want to be a part of the change.” —2021 Youth Leadership Student
“We watched Holocaust survivors Edith Carter and Werner Coppel’s videos from the Echoing Voices, and the kids really engaged while hearing their stories. Thank you so much for the virtual tour. It was great! So far, my students are loving it and several have commented that they would like to see the museum in person! My students have showed kindness and empathy to each other after studying the Holocaust.” — Katie Kilgour, Educator at Jackson City Schools
“Another great account of the goodness of some in resisting the evils of some! I’m inspired, challenged, and motivated. These presentations are consistently excellent and so very interesting.” — Program Attendee

INSPIRING ACTION The true impact of HHC’s work shines through in the ways it has inspired individuals to make a difference through education, remembering history, and fighting injustice. We know this work has never mattered as much as it does today.
THE CINCY UPSTANDER PROJECT In Summer 2020, HHC launched The Cincy Upstander Project. Through generous funding from the Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile, Jr./U.S. Bank Foundation and creative support from the AGAR agency, the Cincy Upstander Project aims to inspire our community to become upstanders through a city-wide street art campaign, monthly programs, museum tours, and training opportunities.
🖥 ENGAGING PROGRAMS
1,200+ people attended digital programs that featured stories of upstanders making a difference in the community, including a headline event featuring former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha J. Power.
🎨 INSPIRING THROUGH ART
AGAR installed dozens of inspirational, interactive murals in neighborhoods throughout the tri-state region. The murals feature local upstanders who use their character strengths to better their communities and the world, including local Holocaust survivor Edith Carter, interfaith and Muslim leader Shakila Ahmad, and arts advocate Kick Lee.
💼 PARTNERING WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES
Cincy Shirts was so inspired by the Cincy Upstander Project that they created an Upstander Collection of shirts. A portion of the proceeds from shirt sales went back to the museum, resulting in brand recognition around the city and a donation to HHC’s work. Playhouse in the Park created a series of outdoor performances called “Upstanders Onstage: Performances for Social Justice.”
WHAT IS AN UPSTANDER? Upstanders are individuals who stand up for others and their rights. They fight against injustice and unfairness, and they use their character strengths to inspire action and become the best of humanity today.
“My ultimate goal for students is to become better people. I want them to become Upstanders. And, I’m learning how to do that. I love working with the staff at HHC. They’ve been so helpful and I’ve learned so much from them.” —Libby, Roma & Sam Kaltman Summer Teacher Institute attendee
