LETTER FROM CEO FROM OUR OUR LEADERSHIP

Greetings, What a remarkable journey this year has been. In just this short time, we have witnessed tremendous growth and significant strides in fulfilling our mission of ensuring that the lessons of the Holocaust inspire action in our world today. And as we witness acts of unspeakable inhumanity across the globe, we are reminded of the urgency of this work.

This year, we lost a true driving force behind our mission, a member of our Holocaust & Humanity Center family, and an all around wonderful human being with the passing of Dr. Al Miller z"l at 100 years old. Al's words of warning, which are featured in our museum, speak to the fragility of this moment: "The Holocaust didn't start with bullets. It started with words," he said. But he also taught us that, just as small acts of dehumanization can be devastating, small acts of kindness and upstanding can transform. This is our work -- using powerful testimony and lessons from survivors like Al to inspire a ripple effect of the best of humanity -- to build a community of upstanders.

The strength of our organization comes from a growing team of dedicated professionals who are experts in their fields, combined with an unparalleled, diverse group of board members, volunteers, and supporters who propel us forward. I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for your continued dedication to our work.

Within these pages, you will discover the profound ripple effects of our mission. From local educators harnessing our resources to reach thousands of eager young minds, to Upstander Award winners uniting to address systemic issues in our community, we have seen firsthand how a single act can generate infinite impact.

In the past year, we have welcomed more visitors to our museum than ever before, all while deepening our engagement with schools and educators. Our ongoing partnership with Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) is a testament to our commitment to education. In the second year of our five-year partnership, every CPS freshman experienced the stories of resilience and survival within our award-winning museum. This model has been so successful that we’ve been able to replicate it with other local school districts – an initiative we only plan to grow in the years to come.

In June, we hosted our first-ever Cohen Family Upstander Weekend – the largest event in our organization’s history. This weekend-long event served as a powerful platform to celebrate and uplift the changemakers in our community. With museum activations, digital programs, and signature events, including the Upstander 5K & Family Day and the Upstander Awards featuring award-winning journalist Katie Couric, we reached thousands and ignited sparks of hope and resilience.

As you peruse this annual report, you will witness the extraordinary work we have accomplished, thanks to your unwavering generosity. Whether your "one" act of support involves attending our events, dedicating your precious time as a volunteer, or making an annual contribution, know that we simply could not do this work without you. The future relies on individuals like you, committed to making a difference in the world.

When I think about the power of our mission to ensure the lessons of the past inspire action today, I’m reminded of Michele Berry Godsey, who was honored with the Werner Coppel Award for Perseverance at this year’s Upstander Awards in June. Her words are a call to action for all of us. “We’re all in a position to speak out against intolerance and prejudice. We’re all in a position to do our best and to never give up. And in doing so we really do make a difference, and we really do make the world a better place.”

Together, we are writing the next chapter in our organization's legacy during a critical time. With your continued support, we can ensure that the lessons of the Holocaust continue to inspire action for generations to come.

USING STRENGTHS IN REGIONAL WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Informed by lessons from the stories in our galleries, our Upstander Workshops harness the VIA character strengths developed in the field of positive psychology. In our workshops, participants learn to harness their strengths and the lessons of history through discussion, introspective analysis, team activities & serious play, practical custom scenarios, and an immersive tour of our award-winning museum. We provide a plurality of upstander training solutions for the needs of corporate, nonprofit, and government organizations including DEI, inclusive leadership, law enforcement, and industry-specific tours.

ENGAGING AUDIENCES ONLINE

The Center has continued its Cincinnati Upstander Project Mural Campaign with creative agency AGAR. Recent installations feature local Holocaust survivors including a mural of Holocaust Survivor Zahava Rendler on the side of Fireside Pizza in Walnut Hills.

The Center is working with AGAR to install a full-sized painted mural on the side of a building in Over-theRhine by the end of 2023.

The Center successfully launched a newly redesigned website in late January 2023. The website redesign has resulted in nearly three times as much digital traffic as compared to last year, and it features an interactive design and new digital content for visitors.

Our online, hybrid, and in-person public programs engaged more than 16,000 individuals since July 2022. Our programs, including our signature Upstander Weekend and Yom HaShoah Commemoration, engage a variety of demographics in the power of history to transform our world today.

STANDING UP TO RISING ANTISEMITISM The Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center launched its “Stand With Me” Awareness Campaign, designed to inspire action during this moment of rising antisemitism. This campaign shares the story of local Holocaust survivor Zahava Rendler, who asks Cincinnatians to stand with her against antisemitism and hate.

In February, more than 300 people gathered to hear her story at historic Union Terminal.

Rendler was born Golda Feuerberg in Stryi, Poland on March 30, 1941. She and her family hid in an underground bunker until her parents decided it was too dangerous and sent her to live with a Polish woman. The woman, fearing she would be discovered, placed Rendler in a convent where she survived and was found by her father. Rendler shared her story and lessons and discussed her views on the recent rise in antisemitism and what we can do to fight hate and prejudice.

Billboards across the region featured her words, reading, “I survived the Holocaust. I don’t want my past to become my grandchildren’s future.”

The billboards reached millions of travellers on I-71, I-75, and Norwood Lateral in January and February.

The campaign launched on International Holocaust Remembrance Day (January 27), which was also the fourth anniversary of the Center's move to Union Terminal. Leveraging compelling videos, billboards, digital and social media content, and interactive programs, the campaign has reached tens of thousands of individuals since its launch.

The Center partnered with iconic organizations including Cincinnati Museum Center, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, City of Cincinnati, the University of Cincinnati, dramatically expanding the messaging’s reach.

The video and social campaigns resulted in more than 50,000 digital impressions across platforms.

EDUCATION

EDUCATING THE NEXT GENERATION OF UPSTANDERS CENTER BRINGS EVERY CPS FRESHMAN THROUGH MUSEUM In the second year of a five-year partnership between the Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center and Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS), all CPS freshmen experienced the stories of resilience and survival in our award-winning museum.

The initiative, which will bring 15,000 CPS students to the museum, is funded by Roger and Julie Heldman who are passionate about Holocaust education. Social Studies Curriculum Manager for CPS David Traubert said teachers and students have already expressed the profound effect the field trips have had on students’ perspectives.

“Students left the museum with new knowledge about the Holocaust, in addition to feeling inspired about the action they can take to make a difference in the community now.

The Humanity Gallery within the museum poses the question, ‘What can you do now?’” Traubert said. “We’re creating a new generation of upstanders.”

HISTORY PRESERVED FOR GENERATIONS TO COME David Hochstein was rescued in 1939 when he was placed on a Kindertransport with other Jewish children leaving Germany for London. One of the few belongings that David brought with him was a tallit katan made by his mother. David wore it daily during the years he lived in London after his father asked him to never forget that he was Jewish. Now part of the Permanent Collection at the Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center, the tallit katan underwent conservation treatment in 2022 following a successful fundraising campaign that supported the project. Textile conservators cleaned and stabilized the fragile cloth to ensure the long-term preservation of the artifact. In May 2023, the Holocaust & Humanity Center displayed the tallit katan in the museum for the very first time, offering visitors an opportunity to learn more about escape during the Holocaust though David Hochstein’s personal experiences.

More than 800 people attended this year's Upstander Awards Gala.

With blue skies and electric energy, more than 500 runners and walkers of all ages took off from the starting line at 8:30 a.m. outside of historic Union Terminal. There were many first-time runners excited to take on the challenge, avid runners looking to get a personal best, and families and friends eager to take a scenic walk around the West End. Runners enjoyed Pickleball games, courtesy of Nettie Pickleball, as friends and family finished the race and their breakfasts. Crowds then filled Union Terminal for the Upstander Volunteer Expo in the rotunda and throughout Cincinnati Museum Center (CMC), which engaged more than 40 nonprofits and missiondriven organizations in sharing how they do their work as upstanders.

Arts and culture organizations offered dynamic activations and performances, inspiring crowds to join Cincinnati's community of upstanders. The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati presented interactive theater, teaching children skills to stand up to bullying, and award-winning violinist Evin Blomberg brought the rotunda to a standstill with a Soli Music Society acoustic performance designed to engage community in appreciation of classical music.

The 2023 Upstander Awards Ceremony took place the following night, recognizing individuals in the region who use their character strengths to make a difference. Each award was named after either a local Holocaust survivor or upstander, featuring a character strength that he or she exemplified. The awards were presented by celebrity Master of Ceremonies Katie Couric.

Among the winners were LeTecia Cunningham, who was honored with the Edith Carter Award for Love for her compassion and support of those experiencing homelessness in Cincinnati; Imran Malik, who received the Michael A. Meyer Award for Spirituality for his work as an interfaith leader; and the Upper Sandusky Library Team, who were recognized with the Roma and Sam Kaltman Award for Love of Learning for their action using educational resources and survivor testimony to address antisemitism in their community.
