A
s more baby boomers enter retirement age, retirement communities are working to make themselves more desirable for the growing number of retirees. One trend local communities are seeing is a desire for a more homelike atmosphere. According to a report by J+J Flooring Group, making communities more like home is a growing trend. One community that has made that transition is Rosedale Green in Covington. “We wanted people to feel like they were just making an address change when
they had to move here,” says Executive Director/Administrator Londa Knollman. They did this by making the facility into eight individual houses of 20 residents. Each resident has their own room, but there is a shared dining room, living room and den. Instead of a large kitchen that makes the food for everyone, each home has its own kitchen, and staff can make whatever the resident wants right in front of them. “So now we have instead of 50 staff members working in a big institutional kitchen, we have two to three working in each household kitchen and they’re right there frying eggs as people wake up and things like that,” says Knollman. Other communities keeping up with this trend of making the community feel more homelike include Carmel Manor in Ft. Thomas and Elmcroft of Florence. n Rosedale Green in Covington
