NKY SCENE BUDDY WALK 2018 The Buddy Walk was established in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness.

Hosted by the Down Syndrome Association of Cincinnati, the regional event is the largest Buddy Walk in the nation. The event took place on Sept. 8 along a 1-mile track at Sawyer Point riverfront park. While based in Cincinnati, the event encompasses a 12-county region and features many teams from Northern Kentucky. This year the event saw over 12,000 participants and raised over $570,000.

CITY OF FLORENCE MEMORIAL DAY PARADE & EVENT Each year, the city of Florence honors the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country by presenting its Florence Memorial Day Parade and Program. Held May 28, hundreds of residents and visitors attended the event to see floats, bands and vehicles of every kind march down Burlington Pike. Once the parade was completed both guests and veterans from all branches of the military gathered at the Veterans Memorial located on the campus of the Florence Government Center to hear the Florence Community Band and Chorus as well as a performance from Melissa Singer-Reed who sang “God Bless America” and “America the Beautiful.”

Children stood ready to fill their bags full of the candy and goodies thrown from the floats and other vehicles.

Country Fireside Nights Spices Up Pumpkin Season

M

emories are made in the country. So says Country Pumpkin, a pumpkin farm in Dry Ridge that has been delivering fall fun since 2000. After years of hosting families at their traditional pumpkin patch, the owners are spicing up the local pumpkin scene with a brand-new event: Country Fireside Nights.

The event takes all the fun of the Country Pumpkin day outing and moves it to the evening with a few added touches that work best under the stars. Visitors to the nighttime event can participate in multiple activities including a corn maze, lantern-lit hayrides, pumpkin chuckin’ and a bonfire.

The event is open to the public each Friday and Saturday night from Sept. 29 to Oct. 28.

“We really wanted to have something that applied to a different audience and would be great for lots of occasions—date nights, youth outings or girls night out,” says Shelley Colson, who helps run Country Pumpkin with her husband, Matthew, and his parents, Dean and Debbie Colson. “It is after dark which is a different atmosphere. I think it will be really neat—a little spooky but not haunted. We don’t do the haunt or the scary stuff, but people were wanting something to do at night.”

Located off the beaten path, away from street lights and business traffic, the farm provides an ideal backdrop for a simple, fall outing. While the corn maze and hayride have already proven to be popular with visitors during their daytime pumpkin patch visits, Shelley thinks the cover of darkness will add a new layer of excitement and enchantment to the fun. And she is certain that visitors of all ages will enjoy watching their pumpkins fly through the air and splat onto the ground after being launched from the Colsons’ new Chuckin’

For those wishing to take a pumpkin home, the gourds will be available for picking—not just choosing.

“You pick pumpkins here,” says Shelley who grew up in Cincinnati but has grown to love her country lifestyle. “That experience is unique in that you take a hayride, stop at a pumpkin patch and cut a pumpkin off the vine. It’s a real experience. It isn’t the cleanest way to do it. You have pumpkin vines and you have dirt, but it’s real and people love it,” Allison Cochran Woodward of Independence visited Country Pumpkin last year with her husband and three young children who enjoyed the barrel train and seeing the baby cows. But it was the size of the pumpkin they found that really excited them. Still it takes more than a big pumpkin to impress a mom.

“What was special about Country Pumpkin is that it felt very family oriented, not just a fall ‘trap.’ It was extremely affordable, the owners and staff were extremely helpful—they even lent me their personal stroller when my infant refused to go in his strap-on carrier—t wasn’t overly crowded and was set up very visitor-friendly like,” says Woodward who plans to take her kids back again this year.

And while she is planning a daytime trip for them early in the season to beat the crowds, she is intrigued by the idea of a nighttime visit to the farm and thinks it would be a fun date night.

Today, Country Pumpkins has a wide fan base, but it has grown from humble beginnings. Founded in 2000 by the Colson and Pennington families, the simple pumpkin sales business initially used an honesty box by the road to secure payment of pumpkin purchasers. By 2009 it had grown into a

more robust fall festival complete with hayrides, farm tours and plenty of photo-ops.

The business moved in 2012 to its current location at Alpine Hills Dairy Farm and has grown every year since.

“We’re on a 250-acre dairy farm up a gravel lane. You’re out in the dark, under the stars; you’re in the country and it is a very cool feeling,” she says. “There are a lot of pumpkins patches, but we hear that people love that we are a real farm and we are not on a main road.

I think people like the authenticity of it. It is country, and this is going to be something great to fill the void for our customers. It is a magical atmosphere with minimal lighting and the bonfire. I picture it being a cozy and unique experience.”

The evening event will be open from 7 to 10 p.m. weather permitting. Admission is $15 per person and parking is free. Concessions, including s’mores kits, are available to purchase but visitors are invited to bring their own snacks. Alcohol is not permitted.

Questions with NKU President Ashish Vaidya

r. Ashish Vaidya took over as president of Northern Kentucky University on July 1, 2018, becoming NKU’s sixth president. He was unanimously selected by the presidential search committee after an eight-month process. Vaidya most recently served two years as interim president of St. Cloud (Minn.) State University where he had previously served as provost and vice president for academic affairs.

He is married to Nita Vaidya, a sociologist. They have two children: Jaanhvi and Avaneesh and a prized Chihuahua mix, Coco.

Q

What was it about NKU that drew you to the university?

I was drawn to NKU because of its national reputation as a regionally engaged university. NKU is a young university and very entrepreneurial with a can-do attitude in a dynamic region. The work over the past several decades has positioned NKU to continue to this strong trajectory and the region really has embraced and supported NKU and vice versa.

Q

St. Cloud State University is similar to NKU in size, scope and complexity, however, every school has its own culture and issues. What do you perceive as the biggest challenge facing NKU?

A

The biggest challenge facing all higher education institutions is the widespread perception that a college education may not provide a strong return on investment for students. While I am steadfast in my belief that state universities in America are engines of economic and social mobility and facilitate regional prosperity, we have not had the best results in advancing student success goals

How important do you t hink athletics are to the school and the community?

A

A successful Division 1 athletics program that develops student athletes to be competitive both in the classroom and on the field is something that I am proud to see here at NKU. Athletics also is a great way to engage people. It builds pride and excitement throughout the campus, amongst our alumni and within the community.

Whether you’re a student walking to the game or an alumni driving back to campus, we all come together to cheer on our Norse.

Q

You grew up in Mumbai, India and have spent time professionally working in California and Minnesota before accepting this role. How does Kentucky compare to the others?

A

It’s hard to compare it with other places I’ve lived except to say there’s a vibrancy here that makes me excited to learn more about the region and Commonwealth.

Of course, I am hoping the winters here are milder and shorter than in Minnesota!

Q

You are the sixth president of the University and your predecessors have left their mark. What do you hope your legacy will be?

A

NKU is a young institution that has accomplished a great deal over the last 50 years. I am deeply grateful for the work of my predecessors and it is an honor and a privilege to lead NKU. It is my goal to see that we never lose sight of our purpose— that we are here to serve our students first and foremost and the region. I hope we continue to meet the hopes and aspirations of the students and the region. n

Times Change Columnist Rick Robinson opines from a bar stool on the role of athletes in social culture

R

ecently, I was at my local pub aggressively discussing whatever topic arose from the bottom of a beer mug with the usual array of regulars. Not that this, in and of itself, is a good basis for a column. If every bar rail political argument were worthy of transcription to 750 words on paper, I’d have written a hundred books by now instead of 10.

Of course, on the other hand, if readers had consumed the same amount of Guinness and Jameson’s as my drunken debate team at the Ireland’s Four Courts in Arlington, Virginia, all my books may have been New York Times best sellers. But I digress.

For this particular robust discussion, however, the age of each mouthy bar patron definitely impacted their point of view. It was quite clear that the older drunks differed in opinion from the younger ones. Standing proud for all the older folks at the pub, I expressed my view, drawing a round of ire from the younger crowd.

Harry, a bartender from Ireland, laughed at my apparently vintage point of view, asking “For the love of Saint Peter, Rick, how old are you?”

I pondered the question for a moment.

Glancing at the television, I noticed a Nike advertisement being broadcast featuring Colin Kaepernick. “Me?” I replied, nodding at the television. “I’m old enough to remember when watching football was about the game.”

A new barroom argument ensued regarding Kaepernick’s Nike-endorsed kneeling knees. On that one, I stayed quiet and reflected on my love/hate affair with the

National Football League.

My dad took me to my first NFL game in 1974. Loyal fans, we always watched the away games because at the time, home games were blacked-out on local television. So, with whatever game was televised, we’d flip on the radio and listen to the Bengals’ over top that game. We didn’t go to see many events live.

A trip to any sporting venue was an extraordinary event for us and I seem to remember each one with exquisite detail. Bengals versus Oilers on October 27, 1974 was no exception.

On that day in October, I saw the heroes of my youth—Ken Anderson, Tommy Casanova, Leapin’ Lemar Parrish, Isaac Curtis, Bob Trumpy—play on the AstroTurf of Riverfront Stadium. My dad took his movie camera to the game just to get 8mm film footage of Billy “White Shoes” Johnson returning punts (two returns for over 60 yards, by the way).

Unfortunately, in a phrase that could be the title to a book on Bengals’ history, Cincinnati led in every category except one—the score.

One thing I distinctly remember from that day was the bus ride home. In the fall of 1974, we were in a true Constitutional crisis in America. Watergate had consumed the nation psyche. Richard Nixon had just resigned and, earlier that month, had been pardoned by President Gerald Ford. The Watergate trials had begun weeks earlier.

Yet, the bus ride from Dixie Terminal back to Ludlow was filled with talk of how five lost fumbles left the Bengals on the losing side of the scoreboard. My dad and I never knew what Paul Brown’s crew thought about Watergate and Nixon. He and his players never made

their views known. And if they did, I’m not sure my pop or I would have much cared.

And that seems to define the major difference between then and now.

Athletes have always been larger than life. In rare instances, they’re bigger than their given sport. And when they do grow so huge, they usually do it without establishing a social voice.

For a few rare humans like Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali, their legendary sports careers and political activism become inseparably intertwined. Often despised for their views at the time, when the right combination of talent and social conscience come together, history usually remembers them kindly.

The unusual thing happening today is, unlike Robinson and Ali, there is no on-field prowess setting Colin Kaepernick apart from his peers. Ali could be outspoken because no glove could touch him. Robinson was so fast, he could steal home in the blink of an eye. Nike is elevating a good (not great) football quarterback with a career rating less than Andy Dalton’s. Thus far, it’s been very successful at selling shoes. And whether a corporate endorsement of Kaepernick’s knees (as opposed to his arm) will eventually make him larger than football remains to be seen.

If it comes to pass, the corporate impact on sports will be forever taken to a new level that even a mug of Guinness with a sidecar of Jameson’s can solve. n

Fall is Here Catching up on what’s happening in the region

S

o just like that—SNAP!—summer is over and we are smack-dab into fall.

Schools are in full session, pools are closed, sunshine turned liquid. Noses to the grindstone, we’ve stepped up the pace.

Where does the time go?

Can’t say I was finished with summer, but I can say everyone seems to be going at warp speed.

Just consider what’s been going on in Northern Kentucky. Here are just a few examples: Samaritan’s Feet, an international nonprofit, helped some River City schools get off to a running start by providing free shoes to all kids in public schools in Newport, Bellevue and Dayton. Thanks to underwriting by WalMart, the Calipari Foundation and local funding from Southbank, the Butler Foundation, Dennis Keene, AT&T and the NKy Tribune, nearly 2,000 kids got new shoes.

The events at the schools involved hundreds of volunteers—washing feet (which is what Samaritan’s Feet does), personally fitting each child with a new pair of socks and new shoes and engaging in a special connection with new friends.

The involvement and generosity of Northern Kentuckians is always an amazing sight to see.

Great news for the new Horizon Community Funds—an anonymous donor has offered a $1 million challenge gift in support of its new Community Impact Fund.

The match challenge will offer $1 for every $2 donated to the unrestricted fund of the foundation through the end of the year.

The Horizon foundation, under the leadership of Nancy Grayson, also announced an amazing Funders’ Grants collaboration with four others—the Butler Foundation, Charles H. Dater Foundation, R.C. Durr Foundation and the Elsa Heisel Sule Foun-

dation—to hold a mini-grant competition in November. Nonprofits will be able to pitch their best ideas to compete for grants.

Showing a lot of heart and class, Notre Dame Academy presented a diploma to Margaret Ann Koeninger who now lives at the Rosedale Green Senior Care facility.

She was offered a full four-year scholarship to the schools in 1943 but her family couldn’t afford transportation from her home in Newport.

Margaret went to work to help support her family and later married and became the mother of 12. She is now Margaret Zink-Fritsch. She never got to finish high school or go to Notre Dame Academy—but President Laura Koehl and Principal Jack VonHandorf presented her with an honorary degree and congratulated her for a life as a “servant leader” who made an impact.

Here’s another heartwarming story about our senior citizens who just want to have

a little fun.

Colonial Gardens teamed up with international foundation Second Wind Dreams to make dreams come true for their residents.

The dream? A happy hour with Elvis, of course. The Elvis was Tyler Christopher, an Elvis impersonator—and a rockin’ good time was had by all.

Generosity doesn’t stop. The Point/Arc broke ground on its new Dr. Anthony and Geraldine Zembrodt Education Center in downtown Covington, making way for a facility to hold educational activities, social communication, advocacy and employment services under one roof and increase the number of special needs people to be served.

Under the leadership of Judi Gerding, the Point/Arc has undertaken a major capital campaign, “Every Gift Counts,” to continue to grow its services, particularly residential homes for its clients.

riving down Dixie Highway through Park Hills one makes the big bend and Covington lies before you. Specifically, you are in one of Covington’s most unique and interesting neighborhoods—Lewisburg.

If you are still not quite sure where Lewisburg is, think about Herb and Thelma’s where you

neighborhood has been known for its strong German character and tight-knit workingclass population. One of the first permanent residents of the neighborhood was Dr. Harvey Lewis (the neighborhood was named for him) who owned nearly 90 acres in the heart of the burg. As German immigrants began flooding into Covington, a few found their way to the rugged hills west of downtown. Here, property was cheaper. Lewis began dividing his property into lots in 1842 and thus the Lewisburg neighborhood was born.

In 1835, the Lexington and Covington Turnpike was chartered by the Commonwealth of Covington (now the Dixie Highway).

The Pike, as it become known in Covington, passed right through Lewisburg. As a result, the population boomed and the neighborhood quickly filled with residents and businesses.

Run Creek in the neighborhood attracted a number of slaughterhouses. The creek proved to be a convenient way to dispose of the stripped carcasses. For many years, the banks also proved to be excellent baseball fields.

Breweries quickly followed. One of the earliest was the Duhme & Company Brewery (also known as the Lexington Brewery). The Lewisburg Brewery followed in 1866. The plant was located at the northwest corner of Lewis and Baker Streets. Other breweries in the burg included Covington Star Brewing Company, J.H. Steinriedge, Windisch & Company, J.H. Deglow and Company, J.H. Herzog & Company and Best and Brenner Brewery. The German residents of Lewisburg obviously loved their beer!

The most famous of the Lewisburg Breweries was Bavarian. Julius Deglow and Charles L. Best established what would become Bavarian in 1866 on Pike Street. In 1869, the brewery officially became known as Bavarian. The operation grew and eventually supplanted most of the small breweries in Covington.

By 1914, Bavarian occupied a 6 1/2-acre site on Pike Street and was producing 216,000 barrels of beer each year. Prohibition dealt a severe blow to the brewery, which for a time turned to the production of soft drinks. Following Prohibition, the company began selling beer again. Bavarian remained in operation until 1966 when they were bought out by a national chain.

Many of the early residents of Lewisburg were German Catholic. In 1848, they organized the St. Aloysius School Society to raise funds to establish a school in their community. Their efforts were successful,

and they purchased several lots at the corner of Leonard and Worth Streets. A school, named Sts. Peter and Paul, was constructed in 1849. Once the school was established the people requested Bishop George Aloysius Carrell to also establish a parish in the burg.

The Bishop agreed and in 1854 construction began. The new church was dedicated on December 27, 1854, near the school. At that time the name of the congregation and school were changed to St. John. It was Covington’s third Catholic parish.

Lewisburg was never entirely German Catholic, but this group predominated. Their numbers were so large that the Covington Independent School District never built an elementary school in the neighborhood, one of a very few neighborhoods in Covington without a public school.

Both St. John Church and School were built on a steep hillside. By the late 1800s, both buildings were becoming structurally unsound as the hillside shifted. In 1908, the decision was made to abandon the original property and begin anew on Pike Street (the current site).

On March 1, 1909, Father Antony Goebel was appointed pastor of St. John Parish with the task of building a new school, church and rectory. The first building on the new property was a school (now Prince of Peace Elementary). This large brick building was dedicated on December 27, 1914. A new permanent Gothic Revival church was completed in 1924 at a cost of $250,000. St. John Church was designed by the renowned GermanAmerican Architectural firm of Ludewig & Dreisoerner of St. Louis. The interior featured

a beautifully decorated wood ceiling, handcarved Italian marble altars, and stained-glass windows from the firm of Dr. Oidtmann of Linnich, Germany.

The German character of the neighborhood can be also found at Turner Hall. In 1855, a number of German residents of Covington gathered together to discuss the establishment of a Turner Society in their city. The society was officially established on Sept. 13, 1855. Members had to agree to the following: Oppose all laws calling for the prohibition of alcohol, not to vote for any member of the Know Nothing Party, and to oppose the institution of slavery.

The Turner organization promoted physical fitness and over the years sponsored many successful athletic teams for all ages. In 1857, the Covington Turners acquired a home on Pike Street. In 1877, a new structure was completed and has been used as a gymnasium and center for social activities ever since.

The construction on Interstate 75 in the 1950s and 1960s brought great changes to the neighborhood. When the interstate was built, many homes in Lewisburg were demolished.

The interstate and a declining population due to suburbanization, made the Lewisburg area a less attractive residential community.

More recently, Covington’s renaissance has been reaching westward and Lewisburg has begun to reap the rewards. Last year’s announcement that the Kenton County Fiscal Court would be moving their offices to the old Bavarian Brewery site has brought about new interest in the community. The Best Around 2018 Best Burger winner delivers the goods

elow a simple sign depicting a black and white drawing of a hamburger in Covington lies one of Northern Kentucky’s hidden dining gems, bringing patrons from near and far since being named the best burger in the region by NKY Magazine earlier this year.

Bard’s Burgers is the passion of chef and owner Jordan Stephenson, who worked 100-hour weeks to establish his restaurant as “the dive that’s worth the drive.”

Featuring 13 burger options, Cincinnatistyle chili dishes and unique desserts not for those counting calories, Bard’s has been quietly gaining notoriety since opening in 2015.

The burgers feature ground chuck seared to perfection, locally sourced fresh buns and an in-house grinded compliment of spices.

“We try to specialize in a classic style burger, really simple, really good,” Ste-

phenson says. “A lot of people say it’s hands down the best burger they’ve ever had and it kind of ruins them for other burger places.”

Patrons can go from the simple “Purist” burger featuring only a bun and patty to the Mic’s Pub Burger which includes a double patty, bacon, fried egg, American cheese, lettuce, onion, pickle and mayonnaise to the more obscure doughnut burger, which features, yes, a doughnut bun.

Stephenson added regional favorite chili dishes like the 3-way and cheese coney to the menu to compliment the burgers and also recommends the cheese curds and inside-out donut S’mores.

This is the second go-round in the restaurant business for Stephenson, who says he had bad luck with his first venture and committed himself to making Bard’s a successful operation.

“I didn’t want to be afraid to fail again,” he says. “Opportunity came up and we just kind of hit the ground running.”

He’s been able to cut his time at the restaurant to a reasonable 60 hours a week thanks to his staff, which Stephenson

“It’s like a big family, when you’re working with people all day you want to get along.”

The atmosphere at Bard’s stretches from blue-collar neighborhood regulars to upscale diners driving miles to try the newest culinary hot spot. And Stephenson has no problem catering to a wide range of clientele.

“I attract every walk of life to here,” he says. “I treat them all, it doesn’t matter who they are.”

The restaurant’s bar reflects the difference in personalities. The draft selections are comprised of craft beers from mostly local breweries, but there are still plenty of domestic bottles for the light beer drinkers.

Different Flavors for Different Makers NORTHERN KENTUCKY’S CRAFT BREWERIES ARE ENJOYING SUCCESS, WHETHER BIG OR SMALL

T

he craft beer explosion over the last decade has seen the opening of thousands of new breweries across the country, but as the market matures and growth begins to slow Northern Kentucky beer makers are taking different paths to find their niche.

There are currently five breweries in the Northern Kentucky area: Braxton Brewing Company, Wooden Cask Brewing Company, Darkness Brewing, Bircus Brewery, and Alexandria Brewing Company.

Each business has a different vision of success and a different path to reach their goal, but they all have one thing in common, a love of suds!

Braxton is the biggest brewery in the region with hopes to become the largest craft operation in Kentucky. Alexandria changed their outlook after opening from broad distribution to a regional “community cen-

ter” to reflect their customer’s preferences.

Wooden Cask—named for the traditional style of brewing—is owned by Randy and Karen Schlitz, who recently began distributing across the river in Ohio. Darkness brews unique beers with a focus on the darker varieties, while Bircus incorporates performance into their operation located within the Ludlow Theatre.

ABC owner Andy Reynolds knew he wanted to get involved in brewing while deployed in Iraq making hard cider with apple juice and yeast, but his dream was temporarily derailed by illness upon his return from service.

Diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Reynolds lost his job while he was hospitalized for the better part of a year and all but gave up on his brewing dream. After participating in nonprofit Wounded Warrior’s Project Odyssey veteran retreat, which focused on setting goals and recovering from PTSD, Reynolds was reinvigorated.

“I kind of drank the Kool-Aid pretty heavy there, normally that’s something I don’t do.

Normally I’m like whatever and blow stuff off,” Reynolds says.

Inspired by the lessons learned, Reynolds finished brewing school and put together a business plan and two Kickstarter crowdfunding campaigns, the second of which led to the opening of ABC earlier this year.

Located on Alexandria Pike near Northern Kentucky University, Reynolds originally figured his bar would be populated by college kids and he would soon distribute widely. However, upon opening he saw a different clientele and while business is booming, most of the beer stays in house as he has trouble meeting the overwhelming demand in the taproom.

“It blows my mind that we’re not really

getting that NKU crowd and we’re packed every weekend. We’ve already got this big support just from Alexandria itself,” Reynolds says.

Looking at nationwide trends, Reynolds saw the market was moving toward neighborhood specialization and has embraced the community center vibe that Alexandria locals have provided. The taproom is kid friendly with free arcade games, Reynolds regularly runs fundraising specials to give back to the charities he holds dear and people young and old congregate every Thursday for a running club.

“If you look at any number right now, craft beer sales are down for retail and they’re way up for tap rooms,” he says.

“We originally planned to go much bigger in terms of production but everything was moving towards the neighborhood brewery and moving away from big distribution and canning and things like that.

“We pulled back what we were looking at in terms of size and scope and just said we’re going to focus on providing for Alexandria and the surrounding towns and if we can do that and we grow organically then that’s great, if we don’t and we’re happy where were

at, we’re happy where we’re at.”

ABC is now looking to add more brewing tanks to meet demand and discussing opening a second location in a similar neighborhood setting and Reynolds is just fine with the new long-term strategy.

“We’d like to say that yes we’re moving forward with our five year goal, but we’ve got to pull back from that and say hey, this would be the better plan,” he says.

Like ABC, Wooden Cask is happy to remain on the smaller scale. Although they feature a wide variety of styles, most are crafted in the traditional European “easy drinking” styles.

The Schlitz’ spent a year looking for a location that was big enough to feature a taproom and production facility before settling on their building on York Street in Newport.

They’ve always wanted to distribute in Kentucky and Ohio, but that’s about big enough for the family operation, which established room to grow when they opened.

With capacity to put out 5,000 barrels a year, the Schlitz’ are happy they have the room to expand from their current output of approximately 1,000 barrels annually, but have little desire to become a major player.

“Over the next five years we would really like to be the biggest brewery in the state of Kentucky. That’s our mantra and that’s our goal. We want to be synonymous with Kentucky craft beer.” n

For Braxton, it’s all about growing while maintaining the core audience that brought them success, according to co-founder and CEO Jake Rouse.

“It’s about really high-quality beer scaling into a large-scale brewer,” Rouse says. “We sell beer in five markets right now in three states and we’re hoping to expand.”

The garage-themed taproom opened in Covington in 2015 and this year the brewery opened Braxton Labs in Bellevue to provide a space for Lead Innovation Brewer Zac Boehnke to continue to craft unique styles in a location fit for a smaller brewing operation than 120-barrel batches that roll out of the taproom.

“For us to be able to continue to find really unique trends and really be on top of new products that are coming out of all breweries in America we (started) Braxton labs,” Rouse says. “We try to experiment with everything, not just really rare and unique styles but also different hops and different things like that.”

The brewery has become known for its unique styles since partnering with Cincinnati favorite Graeters Ice Cream to produce the Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip Milk Stout in 2017. They have continued to collaborate with Graeters for several other brews as well, including the recently announced Pumpkin Pie Ale.

Connecting with customers at events has been another key to the success of Braxton. Events such as the Storm the Court March Madness promotion that featured the Storm Cream Ale and a chance to win NCAA basketball tournament tickets gave consumers a chance to identify with the brewery and remember that fun time when shopping for a six-pack, according to Rouse.

“There are 8,000 breweries in America right now, standing out from the crowd is pretty difficult to do,” Rouse says. “We’re all about trying to take the products that we have and creating really unique experiences around them.”

While he acknowledges that the increase in breweries is cutting into shelf space, Rouse says expansion is still viable by remaining tied to core values.

“Craft beer is probably in a category by itself where growth is almost shunned by some. For us no, we’ve been really deeply rooted in the community and that’s something that me and my brother are really passionate about.

Now in his eighth year as team physician of the Cincinnati Bengals, Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Marc Galloway knows how to deal with athletes of the highest caliber.

“It just comes down to being a doctor and not a fan,” Galloway says. “My goal isn’t to worry so much about the winning and losing, my goal is to provide the highest level of medical care.”

Obviously Bengals players want to get back out there, however Galloway’s tenure and relationship allows players to know he has their long-term interests at heart.

“My job is to determine when an injury is something that someone can tolerate without placing them in jeopardy for long-term consequences versus something that is more serious,” he says. “I think that patients are impressed by your empathy towards them as well as your knowledge and your approach to them.”

That approach doesn’t change no matter the patient. Also the team physician for several area high schools and a practicing doctor at Mercy Health’s Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center, Galloway approaches amateur athletes with the same practices and care for their long-term future.

And watching players return to the field is the most rewarding part of the job.

“I’m not doing life-saving surgery, my goal is to let kids enjoy what should be some of the most physically active years of their lives,” he says.

“That’s what I enjoy.”

St. Elizabeth’s Executive Medical Director of Oncology Services Dr. Douglas Flora is a busy man. In addition to being a practicing doctor, Flora is overseeing the construction of the new Cancer Center in Edgewood, which recently broke ground.

Flora’s excitement for the new facility is palpable, noting that the six-story, 250,000-square-foot facility will be the most technologically advanced in the region. “(The Center) is designed to bring the most cuttingedge clinical trials and access to research. This is going to be a game changing place for patient care in our area,” Flora says.

The facility will utilize the technology of genomic health, allowing doctors to more carefully select cancer drugs and provide more advanced screenings for cancer.

“Rather than just saying you’re 50, you need a colonoscopy, a simple swab of a patient’s cheek can tell what cancers they maybe at risk for and build a personal plan,” Flora says. “We’re hoping that with better information and better technology and screening modalities that we can find these cancers when they’re stage zero or stage one and curable.”

The benefits will extend beyond the cancer field with the utilization of Pharmacogenomics, which is the study of how genes affect a person’s response to drugs.

“We’re now going to be able to identify patients who have risks for side effects for drugs,” he says.

A Northern Kentucky native, Dr. Charles Gabis decided to stay home to practice medicine as a family doctor in Ft. Mitchell, treating patients from nine years old to 98.

“The variety I see from day to day is one of my favorite parts of being a family physician,” Gabis says.

Working in the Christ Hospital Health Network, Gabis practices preventative medicine, which is the science of stopping health problems before they start.

Aspects of treatment include vaccines, contraception and health screenings, but also working with patients to decrease the chances of contracting an illness they are at risk of—such as diabetes—by implementing lifestyle changes to their exercise and diet.

“The secret to good preventative medicine is engaging the patient in their own healthcare,” Gabis says.

“For many of us, the things that we eat and drink, our level of physical activity, and how we look after our emotional wellness can be the difference between having an empty wallet and a full medicine cabinet or the other way around.”

Preventative medicine becomes even more important with the rising costs of health care. By getting patients to live a healthy lifestyle many future health problems can be avoided.

“The most important advancements on the horizon for Family Medicine and preventative care will be in how we deliver care and how we can improve access to health care for everyone,” Gabis says.

SELECTION PROCESS “If you had a patient in need of a dentist, which dentist would you refer them to?”

This is the question we’ve asked thousands of dentists to help us determine who the topDentists should be. Dentists and specialists are asked to take into consideration years of experience, continuing education, manner with patients, use of new techniques and technologies and of course physical results.

The nomination pool of dentists consists of dentists listed online with the American Dental Association, as well as dentists listed online with their local dental societies, thus allowing virtually every dentist the opportunity to participate. Dentists are also given the opportunity to nominate other dentists that they feel should be included in our list. Respondents are asked to put aside any personal bias or political motivations and to use only their knowledge of their peer’s work when evaluating the other nominees.

Voters are asked to individually evaluate the practitioners on their ballot whose work they are familiar with. Once the balloting is completed, the scores are compiled and then averaged. The numerical average required for inclusion varies depending on the average for all the nominees within the specialty and the geographic area. Borderline cases are given a careful consideration by the editors. Voting characteristics and comments are taken into consideration while

making decisions. Past awards a dentist has received as well as status in various dental academies can factor in our decision.

Once the decisions have been finalized, the included dentists are checked against state dental boards for disciplinary actions to make sure they have an active license and are in good standing with the board.

Then letters of congratulations are sent to all the listed dentists.

Of course there are many fine dentists who are not included in this representative list. It is intended as a sampling of the great body of talent in the field of dentistry in the United States. A dentist’ inclusion on our list is based on the subjective judgments of his or her fellow dentists.

While it is true that the lists may at times disproportionately reward visibility or popularity, we remain confident that our polling methodology largely corrects for any biases and that these lists continue to represent the most reliable, accurate, and useful list of dentists available anywhere.

Speed Racers

C

areening around sharp turns and hitting speeds upwards of 40 miles per hour, Full Throttle Indoor Karting quenches the need for speed for thrill seekers young and old.

After experiencing success with their Tri-County, Ohio location, owners Aaron Banfield and Joe O’Gorman acquired a second indoor track in Florence in 2017, and have been revving up the excitement in Northern Kentucky since.

The Florence track is just under a quartermile and features 13 turns, many of which of the hairpin variety. Each eight-minute race allows up to 10 riders to complete between 16 and 20 laps, with advanced transponders measuring each kart’s performance.

The goal is the fastest lap and with measurements down to 1,000th of a second, the post-race printouts given to riders leave no doubt who was fastest in a given heat.

The printouts also feature myriad statistics from the race for those looking to improve their skills and track what they can do differently next race, Banfield says. “A lot of our customers track their performance and look for ways to get better,” he says. “(The printouts are) for those of us who are analytical and like to geek out a little bit.”

Getting a hang of the 270cc gas-powered karts can take a second, but riders will see improvement in lap times almost instantly, Banfield says. New racers can see significant reductions in time in just the first few laps and most racers improve by at least a second on their second race.

“By the third race that’s when you see your true lap time,” Banfield says.

The main track is open to riders ages seven and up and the facility also has a kiddie track for little ones wanting in on the action.

Because inclusion is one of Banfield’s goals for the racing community, the track also has junior electric karts and a special two-seated kart with pedals on one side and steering wheels on both, allowing those with disabilities to ride along or drive the track while an experienced pit member ensures safety by controlling the gas and brakes.

“It gives them the chance to be out there,” Banfield says of the two-seat kart. “One of my goals is to make karting as accessible as possible. There’s no reason this sport shouldn’t be more accessible than it is.”

Track safety measures and flags allow for riders of different skill levels to participate in the same race, as long as they pay attention to the warning flags of a passing kart.

Banfield recalls a mother slowly navigating the course as her children lapped her.

“She had a blast,” he says. “She finally stopped screaming every time somebody went flying by her.”

While singles, couples or groups of up to 20 can come in for a race or two, the track also offers private lessons, leagues and summer camps for those looking to get serious about racing.

Full Throttle also recently added a full bar and additional dining options, although drinkers are barred from racing after purchasing a second alcoholic beverage for safety reasons.

Good for the Sole Sole Purpose Foot Care offers safe and sterile pedicures

ith more than 25 years experience in the nail industry Dee Dee Harper has seen it all and what she didn’t like to see at many nail salons was the overall lack of concern for a client’s wellbeing and health.

That’s one of the reasons Harper earned her medical nail technician certification and opened Sole Purpose Foot Care nearly four years ago. As a medical nail technician, Harper is uniquely qualified to perform safe, cosmetic pedicures on people who are healthy or chronically ill.

And that’s important to people who have autoimmune diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, psoriasis, thyroid disease and cancer patients who are currently undergoing or who have taken chemotherapy or radiation treatments. “Anybody that has a low immune system is a candidate for me,” Harper says.

People with autoimmune disorders and cancer patients taking chemotherapy and radiation treatments are more susceptible to infections than healthy people, she says. At most nail salons the pedicure bowl may be cleaned after each use, however, the water jets used in the bowl can harbor bacteria which can lead to an infection, says Harper.

Any type of cut or abrasion on the skin of the foot, even microscopic, can lead to an infection from bacteria in a pedicure bowl, she says. That’s why Harper eliminates the risk of infection from a pedicure bowl by using a waterless system. “I don’t soak the feet in water at all,” she says.

Not using water during a pedicure also helps to keep the skin hydrated, says Harper.

skin actually dehydrates the skin, she says.

“If I’m trying to give them a nice moisturized foot the last thing I’m going to do is put you in a big hot tub of water and dehydrate the foot.” she says.

Another method Harper uses to prevent infections is by sterilizing her equipment in an autoclave that uses steam under high pressure to kill bacteria. “The state board only requires me to sanitize and disinfect,” she says. “I take it one step higher and I go above disinfection and I sterilize.”

In addition, any equipment used during a pedicure that cannot be sterilized in the autoclave, such as a file or a buffer, is thrown away, Harper says.

“There’s a lot of people out there that are sick that if they’re exposed to something harmful in a pedicure bath or a dirty implement they could get sick really quickly,” she says. “This way I can make sure that does not happen.”

In addition to using safe and sterile methods to prevent infections in people with low immune systems, Harper is also able to evaluate feet to make sure they stay healthy. “I can’t diagnose and I cannot treat … but I can spot something that’s abnormal and I can send them to the podiatrist and have it looked at,” she says.

One way Forcht Bank delivers on this promise is through its OnDemand Banking service at select banking centers, which allows customers to use an interactive teller machine to communicate with a live teller from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, says Andrew Miller, marketing director of Forcht Bank.

The interactive teller machines are great for customers who are unable to get off work during regular bank hours and busy parents on the weekend, Miller says. “It’s allowed us to … really enhance our customer service and provide more value to our customers,” he says.

Plus, the interactive teller machines can dispense exact change, unlike an automated teller machine that can only disperse $20 bills, he says. “So if you need to cash a check for $354.34 cents we can do it,” Miller says.

banking service for its customers is through its CardValet technology, he says. CardValet allows customers to turn on and off their debit cards and even set spending limits through a mobile device.

And within the next couple of months Miller says Forcht Bank expects to roll out a new technological partnership with Zelle.

Similar to the Venmo, Zelle allows customers to send and receive money from trusted acquaintances via a mobile device using their email address or mobile number.

The van, wrapped in bright colors and sporting green lights, travels to community events such as youth baseball games and vacation Bible schools to pass out free ice cream, he says. “I think we’ve done 75 events this year and handed out probably 40,000 cups of ice cream for free,” Miller says.

The Ice Cream Machine van may soon be crossing the river into Ohio. That’s because Forcht Bank, which continues to seek growth through strategic acquisitions, is set to soon complete its agreement to buy Watch Hill Bank, which is headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, Miller says.

“This will be the first time that we have stretched across state lines so this is a big milestone for us,” he says.
