Nothing Like a Party on the Water

Metro PCS’s Party on the Purple concert series returns for round two

BY M ADISON RODGERS Party on the Purple is held Wednesday evenings during the summer on the Purple People Bridge.

M

etro PCS’s Party on the Purple concert series is back and better than ever for its second season on the Purple People Bridge.

The free summer party series, which is held on Wednesday evenings, began in April and will keep the party going for 18 weeks, six weeks longer than in 2017.

“We are really looking to stimulate activity on the bridge,” says Marc Wertheim, president and CEO of Coldiron Enterprises, Inc., a local event company. Coldiron Enterprises, Inc., the Newport Southbank Bridge Co. and the city of Newport are the hosts of the series. The event series was created in order to promote the Purple People Bridge and the various fundraising efforts that ensure the bridge is well maintained.

There are quite a few new things to this year’s concert series, says Wertheim.

“Based on customer feedback, we raised the level of the stage to make it easier to see,” says Wertheim.

“We also changed the hours based on customer feedback,” Wertheim adds. “The hours are 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. this year.”

Rhinegeist beer will be available.

The event will include a full bar with a variety of alcohol. Party on the Purple is also bringing back its signature cocktail, available for those who attend the party.

The signature cocktail is called “The Purple Breeze” and is made with Svedka Vodka, one of the sponsors of the event. The event’s alcohol sponsors include Charles Smith Wines, Braxton Beer, Rhinegeist Beer and Yuengling Beer. Metro PCS and iHeart Radio are also sponsoring the series.

Some of the bands that are scheduled to

attend the series are Stays in Vegas, Trailer Park Floosies, Dog House, Model Behavior, My Sister Sarah, Everyday People, Flip Cup All Stars, Naked Karate Girls, Marsha Brady, My Girl Friday, 3 Day Rule, Final Order, Gen X Band, Dat Band and Buzz Bin. A portion of funds generated from food and drink sales during the weekly concert series will go towards painting and maintaining the pedestrian bridge.

FORCHT BANK EVENTS IN 2017 Forcht Bank had a busy year in 2017. It celebrated its new location in Hamburg, hosted a Pancakes with Santa event for the community and recognized its employees with a recognition dinner. A Bright Future A new community foundation and the next generation of Northern Kentuckians are already working to create a better tomorrow

T

he biggest “good news” around Northern Kentucky has to be about the new Horizon Community Funds of Northern Kentucky. It’s a new community foundation aimed at addressing NKY’s needs in a strategic and philanthropic way.

Nancy Grayson was named president of the organization and has been busy building it and expanding its resources. She has, in fact, been everywhere, keeping up a dizzying schedule meeting with civic groups and individuals all around the region to broaden support. A community foundation can only be as effective as its connection to the community, and Nancy is connecting.

Horizon teamed up with the Kentucky Philanthropy Initiative to offer an inaugural regional philanthropy summit in NKY, on April 17 at the St. Elizabeth Training & Education Center in Erlanger, called “Power in Numbers.” The discussion was around the big issues in NKY that the philanthropic sector can address (and move the needle on) and how to grow and build resources to do that. A big piece of that was a presentation on KPI’s terrific Transfer of Wealth study, just updated, that paints a picture for just how vast those resources are.

I am particularly encouraged that some key young people were featured in the program, and not just because the particular young people are themselves beyond amazement—but because this gives me an opportunity to remind all of us that there are great young people everywhere doing

remarkable things in their communities.

I would argue that these engaged, smart, caring young people represent the real future for us.

Take Will Broomhead as an example. He’s a junior at Dixie Heights High School and was recently named a second-time winner of the national Emperor Science Award given by the PBS Learning Media and Stand Up to Cancer. He has an impressive resume already, having won awards in Biomedical Sciences and having represented Kentucky twice at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair.

He told conference attendees about what he did with the $1,500 Emperor Science prize—he started Foldscopes for Kentucky, a program that distributes “an ultra-affordable, paper microscope that you assemble yourself. Designed to be inexpensive, durable and to give optical quality similar to conventional research microscopes (magnification of 140X and 2 micron resolution), Foldscope brings handson microscopy to new places!”

Well, I didn’t know about Foldscopes either (had to look it up) but Will knew— and wanted more students to have them.

Will was diagnosed with cancer five years ago and says that set his life on a new path.

He hopes to become a pediatric oncologist and researcher.

Then, consider Bryan Padilla, a senior at Conner High School, who is now the student representative on the school board.

Bryan found purpose in his life through the NaviGo college and career coaching program started by former Kenton County superintendent Tim Hanner. He was a young man in need of direction and NaviGo helped him see how he could find a bright future.

He’s on his way, wants to be involved in aerospace and mechanical engineering and has his eyes on MIT where he has already done a summer program. He heads Boone 4

Health initiatives and is a star student and upstanding citizen.

In addition, two grade schoolers from Yealey Elementary were there to talk about their service-learning project. They are representative of the hundreds of servicelearning projects going on in schools all around NKY, like the kids at St. Philip’s turning plastic bags into blankets and backpacks for the homeless, those at Kelly Elementary making a traveling tribute to veterans, or others at Goodridge helping kids in Kenya, schools raising money and goods for the hungry and the homeless…

The point being that good things are happening throughout the community, driven by citizens who care about our community and aim to show it. And that includes the youngest among us.n

Celebrating Appropriation of the Ludlow/Bromley Culture

B

runo Mars? I’m sorry. My children are embarrassed, but I’m clueless.

Asking me to sing the words to a Bruno Mars song would be like having asked my parents to sing “Maggie’s Farm”

by Dylan back in ’68. They would not have known the words and could have cared less about the singer.

And like my parents before me, if a Bruno Mars song came on the radio today, I am certain I would not recognize it. However, a recent social controversy about his music has me wound tighter than a Prince guitar solo.

Following his Grammy win for album of the year, Bruno Mars was attacked as being—gasp—a “cultural appropriator.”

Now many of you keeping score at home may not know of this hideous offending label. Cultural appropriation is a politically correct concept whereby the people who give a rat’s fanny about such things judge and admonish others for adopting elements of a minority culture into something they are doing. The cultural appropriator becomes the Charles Manson of whoever has been offended.

The labeling of things as cultural appropriation runs the gambit of items, the

seriousness of which likely depends on the sensitivity of those claiming to be offended.

Human outcry can be effective. Just ask the Miami Redskins Red Hawks.

Of course, it also begs the question of why so many people (me included) wear Scottish kilts on St. Patrick’s Day. Pat ran the snakes off an entirely different island for goodness sake. I suppose cultural confusion cannot properly be the subject of appropriation.

But I digress.

Back to Bruno Mars. He is being attacked as having committed the social faux paus of—and I swear I am not making this up—singing rhythm and blues. You see, Bruno Mars is from Hawaii with a Filipina mother and a Puerto Rican/Jewish father.

While this is not exactly a subject deserving of a new Warren Commission, according to many it disqualifies Mars from being Grammy-worthy.

Note that in preparation for this article, I did listen to some Bruno Mars music. I’m not sure what a Hawaiian/Filipina/Puerto Rican/Jewish singer is supposed to sound like, but Mars does an excellent job at it.

And, for me, there’s the rub. If I like it, why should I care about DNA of the singer?

Isn’t it time to celebrate cultures with the

enthusiasm of a Bootsy Collins bass line?

After all, we’ve been doing it in Ludlow and Bromley for years now.

From the time that the first middle-class couple wandered down Sleepy Hollow Road in their minivan to eat at the Catfish Ranch, we embraced the sharing of our unique Twin City culture. We wanted all to know that Ludlow/Bromley are, in fact, the crossroads of a continent.

Today those visiting the Ludlow-Bromley Yacht Club for a quiet sunset know they leave with a part of the Twin Cities in their soul (or is it on their sole—whatever). Even Jerry Springer hits downtown Ludlow every couple of weeks for a cup of coffee and some good folk music.

As long as you bring money, come on down and misappropriate the be-jeez out of our culture. If it’s on a night Greg Shumate and the Drysdales are playing at the Yacht Club, I bet we can get them to do a Bruno Mars song. n

Northern Kentucky’s Brewing Tradition

The region’s love of beer has some historic roots

C

raft and small batch breweries are having a resurgence across the country and especially here in Northern Kentucky—think Braxton, Bircus and Wooden Cask to name a few. These wildly popular ventures are drawing from a long tradition of brewing beer in Northern Kentucky. The region’s three traditional large-scale breweries were Bavarian and Heidelberg in Covington and Wiedemann in Newport.

Julius Deglow and Charles L. Best formed a partnership in 1866 to establish a brewery in Covington in the Lewisburg neighborhood. In 1869, the business officially became known as Bavarian Brewery. The brewery expanded greatly under the next owners, William Riedlin and John Meyer. They purchased Bavarian in 1882. Anton Ruh was hired as the brew master.

Breweries on the scale of Bavarian needed multiple facilities to function. A bottling plant was built in 1892 and was replaced in 1903. This became a necessity as bottled beer became more popular. About the same time a new stable was constructed to house the horses that pulled delivery wagons. A new four-story warehouse followed in 1905.

By 1914, Bavarian Brewery was one of the largest breweries in the commonwealth. The facility occupied nearly seven acres on Pike Street and was producing 216,000 barrels of beer each year.

Meanwhile in Newport, George Wiedemann partnered with John Butcher to establish a brewery on Jefferson Street in 1870. In 1882, the firm acquired the nearby Constants Brewery and expanded its operation. Eventually George Wiedemann bought out John Butcher and became the sole proprietor of Wiedemann Brewery. The market for beer increased with the population growth of the region—particularly the German population.

was charged with violating the Volstead Act in 1927 by selling 1.5 million gallons of illegal beer. The brewery was padlocked and Wiedemann was sentenced to eight years in the federal penitentiary.

The repeal of Prohibition brought new life to Bavarian and Wiedemann. Wiedemann began the production of beer in 1933. Bavarian followed in 1935. Once reopened, both firms quickly repaired their buildings, installed new equipment and began shipping their product to an ever-increasing market.

In the meantime, another brewer y emerged in Covington. Heidelberg Brewery was established in 1934 with George H. Meyerratken as president and Joseph Ruh in charge of production. Ruh had been the long-time brew master at Covington’s Bavarian Brewery prior to this time. A new facility rose at the corner of Fourth and Bakewell streets and the company was incorporated with stock valuing $350,000.

Among its most popular products was the Student Prince beer. The name was derived from an operetta about a German prince who attended the University of Heidelberg.

In 1940, the brewery’s premium brand, Heirloom, won a gold medal at the French Grand Prix Contest for beer. The company prospered for several years, but eventually could not compete with the other area operations. Bavarian bought out controlling

interest in Heidelberg in 1949. Bavarian used the plant as a distribution center until 1955, when the plant was sold to the C. Rice Packing Company.

Despite Bavarian’s new acquisition, sales began to decline. Outdated facilities and equipment were taking a toll. In 1959 Bavarian joined the International Brewing Company of Detroit in an effort to inject innovation and efficiencies to their operation.

As a result, a new bottling facility on Pike Street was constructed in 1960. Despite this improvement, Bavarian lost money in 1962 and 1964. It was becoming more difficult each year to compete with the national brands—including Wiedemann in Newport.

In a money saving effort, International Brewing Company instituted a series of layoffs at the Bavarian plant. Bavarian union members voted 112 to 28 to oppose any such layoffs. This opposition and continued declining sales resulted in the International Brewing Company purchasing the rights to the Bavarian label in 1966. That same year, the Bavarian facility was permanently closed and 200 employees lost their jobs.

Wiedemann Brewery was still producing 850,000 barrels of beer in 1955 and was successfully competing with many of the regional and national brands. However, brewery owners began a series of mergers in the 1950s and 1960s that had a large impact on the market. In order to compete, Wiedemann became an independent division of the Heileman Brewing Company of La Crosse, Wisconsin, in 1967. This association helped for a short period of time, but the lack of funds to update the plant and equipment left Wiedemann at a distinct disadvantage. In 1983, Wiedemann Brewery closed its doors leaving 400 employees without jobs. The closure had a significant impact on the city of Newport’s tax base.

Eventually, the Wiedemann plant was demolished leaving a large scar on the landscape of the city that has yet to be filled.

The Bavarian Brewing site has gone through several transformations. One of the old buildings has become the home to Glier’s Meats. In 1996, Ken Lewis purchased much of the property and opened a microbrewery called Brew Works. In 1998, the old brewery buildings were purchased by a Louisville company named Jillian’s and remodeled into an entertainment venue. After Jillian’s closed, the complex stood empty for many years. Most recently, the property was purchased by the Kenton County Fiscal Court as a site for a new county building.

The historic central building and tower are being saved and incorporated into the new facility. Groundbreaking on the project occurred on September 25, 2017. n

A Taste of History Smoke Justis celebrates a piece of Covington history through its food and atmosphere

ichard Dickmann knew he wanted to create a sports bar that specialized in smoked meats, but he didn’t know what to name it.

“When you look at sports in the city of Covington, there was one team that kept popping up, and it was the Covington Blue Sox,” says Dickmann, owner of Smoke Justis and Dickmann’s Sports Cafe. Dickmann used the Blue Sox, and of one its pitchers, for inspiration.

“May 9, 1913, the opening day pitcher for the Covington Blue Sox was Walter Justis,” says Dickmann. Walter “Smoke” Justis played in the Federal League, which lasted from 1913-1915 and consisted of teams from Covington, Chicago, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Cleveland and St. Louis. Federal Park, the home of the Covington Blue Sox, could be seen from the windows of Smoke Justis if the park were still standing.

With this piece of Covington history, Smoke Justis was born.

Smoke Justis carries the history of the federal league throughout the restaurant. “I had a well-known artist draw a mural of Walter Justis to hang behind the bar,” Dickmann says. A picture of the Covington Blue Sox team is displayed proudly on a wall by the bourbon bar. Display cards are even kept on each table to ensure that those dining know the story of Walter “Smoke” Justis.

Dickmann decided to serve smoked meats because he saw a trend in the community.

“We don’t consider ourselves a barbecue place,” Dickmann says. “We wanted it to be more about smoked meats.” Dickmann noticed that there weren’t many smoked meat restaurants on the Kentucky side of the river, so he thought it made sense to

go in that direction. “We’re able to use the smoked meats to provide more of a sports bar menu,” says Dickmann.

The menu incorporates the legacy of the Federal League. “Our fry boxes are named after all the teams in the Federal League,” says Dickmann. The menu consists of

Crafty Success

L&M Busy Hands Crafts and Gifts Shop shows off the work of NKY crafters

L

isa Gibson Mansfield was looking for a change in her life when she stumbled upon the idea that would become L&M Busy Hands Crafts and Gifts Shop.

“As a busy mom of three and wife to a hubby with a progressive neurological disease, I wanted to slow down a bit and stay close to home,” she says. She had been setting up at craft shows when she wasn’t working as a hospice nurse, but found them to be tiring and less profitable. “I drove by a cute little shop in [Independence] with a for-lease sign in the window. I turned around, called the number and next thing you know, I had found my first brick and mortar. I drummed up a few friends and talented crafters with varying products and we opened two weeks later.”

Mansfield compares L&M Busy Hands to a craft show, but one that is open on a daily basis. About 70 crafters sell their handcrafted, upcycled and vintage goods through the store. However, items are sorted by type, not the vendor, to make shopping easier for visitors.

With so many vendors, shoppers have plenty of options. Featured items include jellies, blankets, glassware, furniture, hand towels, wine racks, bath bombs, glass ornaments, jewelry, yard signs, wind chimes, wreaths, T-shirts and more. “If we don’t

have it—wrong size, wrong color, etc.—ask!

Someone can make it,” says Mansfield.

L&M Busy Hands opened in its current location at 2508 Dixie Highway in Fort Mitchell in August 2017. The move increased the store’s square footage from 440 to almost 2,400. The move allowed Mansfield to host more products, but it has also allowed her to hold crafting classes.

Those who sell at the store are invited to host classes showing off their craft. The classroom holds 16-18 participants. Mansfield says her goal is to offer options for any price point, age and skill level.

“We have designed necklaces, built dream catchers/mobiles, and painted stencil projects/signs/barrel heads so far,” says Mansfield. In addition, the store has started a new workshop series called Swag Your Door. “Each workshop offers a different project designed for the front door,” she says. For example, the first project was a baseball sign for Opening Day. Mansfield’s dedication to the store has paid off—L&M Busy Hands won Best Gift Shop at the 2017 Best of NKY event and is nominated again in 2018.

“We are not a traditional ‘retail’ shop, but are so proud that our shoppers appreciate the handcrafted, locally produced aspect of our products,” says Mansfield. “We operate bare bones—our vendors are our workers. We do not employ anyone, and I make no profit from others. Our business model is to put as much into the pockets of the crafters as possible.” n

Hearth Home Communities offer the benefits of a home without the responsibilities

H

earth Home Communities’ three rental communities in Northern Kentucky have all the benefits of a home without the responsibilities, says Todd Hignite, vice president of Hearth Home Communities.

“The concept behind it was to appeal towards the demographic that does not want the responsibility of owning a home any longer,” says Hignite. Couples whose children had left home, known as empty nesters, were the original target market for Hearth Home Communities, he says.

But the apartment communities, which are built in multiple single-story buildings consisting of three to nine units in each building, have become so popular that they now draw all kinds of people, says Hignite.

“For example, at Florence and Burlington and Independence … you’ve got single people, you’ve got couples, you’ve got families, you’ve got seniors, I mean you literally have everything,” he says. “I mean, it’s just been fantastic, it’s been so well received.”

Although they are rental apartments, Hignite says the units are more like ranch-style homes because there’s no noise associated with people living above or below like a multistory apartment building and because there are no steps.

They are also convenient because there’s no mortgage, no maintenance costs, no homeowner’s association fees and no hassle of trying to sell a home when its time to move on, he says.

“It’s definitely advantageous for those people that just want convenience and

don’t want to be tied down to the house or the mortgage or having to sell a home after being in town for two or three years on assignment for their careers,” says Hignite.

All the units in Hearth Home Communities are furnished with stainless steel Whirlpool appliances, granite counters, upscale cabinetry, wood-style flooring throughout the main living areas, carpeted bedrooms, a utility room and at least one patio with a privacy fence, he says.

NKY HOME says Hignite. “We use 2-by-6 construction, which is superior. It’s just a lot of good stuff there,” he says.

The units are available in one-, two- and three-bedroom configurations and all come standard with an attached two-car garage, says Hignite. Rent for a two-bedroom unit range from $1,495 to $1,645 a month and rent for a three-bedroom unit range from $1,895 to $1,995 a month, he says.

That rental fee covers everything, says Hignite. “We take care of all the landscaping, there’s no HOA fee and there’s no maintenance fee. Everything is included in your rental payment.”

The size of the units is around 1,376 square feet for two bedrooms and the threebedroom units range anywhere from 1,676 up to 1,776 square feet, says Hignite.

The Hearth Home Communities in Northern Kentucky include the Villages of Independence with 106 units and the Villages of Burlington with 115 units.

Hearth Home Communities’ newest project, Villages of Florence, will have 171 units when it’s completely finished, he says. “We expect to have Phase I done by October,”

says Hignite. “We expect to have Phase II completed in 2019.”

The units at the Villages of Florence are being leased quickly, he says. “Our threebedrooms are currently all leased or lived in currently in Phase I at Florence,” he says.

The three-bedroom, three-bathroom design in the Florence location has a sliding door in the master bedroom that opens to its own patio, in addition to another patio off the main living space, says Hignite.

Although the original concept was to appeal to the empty-nester demographic, Hignite says many of the original design details—such as step-in showers in the master suites as opposed to a tub, wide hallways and 9-foot ceilings—remain in all the new units.

And the lack of steps; a walk-in, two-car garage; and no maintenance requirements are amenities that all generations can appreciate, says Hignite.

One tweak that has been made to the newer communities because of their popularity by a younger demographic is that USB port chargers are being added to the power outlets in each unit, he says. “It’s a little bit

James E. Simpson Jr. OWNED JONES & SIMPSON FUNERAL HOME James E. Simpson Jr. made history in 1971 when he became the first AfricanAmerican to win a seat on the Covington City Commission. It was a source of great pride for the family, says his son Arnold Simpson, a former city manager of Covington and current Kentucky state representative.

“My father ran for office hoping to win, but realizing that even if he did not win that the community would win because it was very important to have an individual who was of color … to rise to these positions,” says Arnold.

He completed the two-year term on the Covington City Commission and later completed an unexpired term on Covington City Commission in 1991.

Not only was Simpson a history-making politician, he was also a business owner.

Simpson bought the C.E. Jones Funeral Home in Covington in 1961 from Anna Jones, who retired that year. He later

changed the name to Jones & Simpson Funeral Home.

His path to owning the funeral home started when he joined the U.S. Army in 1947.

He then used his GI Bill benefits to finance his education at the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science and earned his degree in 1951. He then started working at the C.E. Jones Funeral home, which served the African-American community in Northern Kentucky, the following year.

Simpson, who was born in 1928 in Somerset, Kentucky, and died in 1999, was also active in Northern Kentucky’s civic community, serving on multiple boards. “He gave of himself willingly and that’s something he felt that he was obligated to do,” says Arnold. “Because

before he came along there were no African Americans on these boards.”

Candace S. McGraw CINCINNATI/NORTHERN KENTUCKY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, CEO In law school Candace McGraw says she had aspirations to “right all the injustice in the world.”

She hasn’t had that opportunity, but she’s had a major impact on a cornerstone of the Tristate economy.

As CEO at CVG since 2011, McGraw has been instrumental in the reinvention of the airport from a hub for Delta Air Lines’ shrinking operations to a growing local origination airport with the lowest fares in its history and a growing cargo operation.

It’s one of the things she’s proudest of.

“When I came here 10 years ago or so, 90 percent plus of our passengers were connecting, just passing through here. Now it’s the converse. Ninety-plus percent of our passengers are local but we have more passengers coming through the airport than ever,” says McGraw, who came to Cincinnati in 2009 as chief administrative officer.

“One of the proudest accomplishments I’ve had is helping build a team with deep expertise. I know the airport will be well served into the future with this team.”

McGraw, who received a law degree from the University of Pittsburgh, went to work for the city of Cleveland’s law department after graduation and was assigned as counsel to the city-owned airport and fell in love with the work.

At CVG, she says, “We have 7,500 acres and our own police and fire department.

We maintain the entire infrastructure and

oversee all the passengers coming and going. It is like small city.”

There were few women in airport administration when she started 30 years ago but today she’s among a group of women managing some of the nation’s largest airports. McGraw

has been active in a number of organizations and received a number of awards including YWCA Career Woman of Achievement, Outstanding Woman of Northern Kentucky and Best Boss of Northern Kentucky.

Brian J. Papke MAZAK CORP., CHAIRMAN For more than 30 years Brian Papke has preached the gospel of American manufacturing and he’s helped turn Mazak from a small U.S. sales operation for its Japanese parent into one of the leading innovators in U.S. manufacturing technology, designing and building systems in Northern Kentucky for export overseas.

Under his leadership, Mazak’s business in the United States has grown more than 10 times in size. The company has expanded 16 times and employment has grown to more than 1,000 in the United States, most of them based at the company’s 800,000-square-foot manufacturing campus in Florence.

Papke, a longtime member and officer of the national Association for Manufacturing Technology, was named one of 30 Advanced Manufacturing Visionaries by SME’s Smart Manufacturing Magazine two years ago.

Papke, who grew up in the machine tool center of Rockford, Illinois, says he’s

always been fascinated with the application of technology to produce things faster and more efficiently.

“I have a passion about manufacturing and one of the things I’m proudest of is the culture we have here that’s different from any other company,” he says. That’s one of the things Papke says he learned from his mentor the late Terry Yamazaki, chairman and CEO of the parent Yamazaki Mazak Corp. “One of his favorite songs was ‘My Way,’” Papke says. “If there was a question about who to follow, his advice was, ‘Do it your way.’”

Table Talk The Public Arts Network of Northern Kentucky is uniting the region by mixing art with picnic tables

W

hen members of the Public Arts Network of Northern Kentucky set out to create a project to connect the communities of Northern Kentucky through public art, they questioned what they could bring to the table. The answer?

Tables. Lots of tables.

The organization created the Northern Kentucky Picnic Project, an initiative that will add art and picnic tables throughout the region.

The concept is relatively simple. Businesses and organizations throughout Northern Kentucky were invited to purchase a specially constructed picnic table, which they would then design and decorate at two painting parties held by the Public Arts Network. The designs, which are com-

pletely at the discretion of the purchasing organization, should reflect the community or organization in some way—to convey through art the story they want others to know. It’s like Cincinnati’s Big Pig Gig but with tables. And food.

The project culminates on June 16 at a community picnic on the Purple People Bridge where all the tables and those who helped to create them will come together for a meal. More than 70 uniquely painted tables, each seating 10, will sit end to end, their varying designs and schemes creating a visual patchwork of the Northern Kentucky community.

“We’re expecting at least 700 people with the potential of 1,400 [counting guests] so it will be crazy and amazing. The cool

thing will be the tables all lined up down the center of the bridge,” says Jill Morenz, who is heading up the project.

While the center of the bridge will be restricted to those directly involved with the project, the pedestrian walkways on either side of the bridge will remain open to allow community members to see all the tables together. After the event, the tables will be delivered to their final homes to be used throughout the year. Most tables will take up residence on the property of the buyer but some will make their way into parks in Newport and Covington.

“It was really just a way to get Northern Kentucky together through art but also get that identifiable object to link people together like the pigs in Cincinnati or the

horses in Lexington. But this is more participatory. It is more than just coming together to see the tables. I love the pigs but with the tables you can also have a picnic on them,” says Morenz on why she thinks the use of tables for the project added to the overall impact. “People can utilize these tables. I think it’s an interesting additional aspect to just an object.”

Among the participants are schools and churches, civic organizations, veteran businesses and startups, each sharing a message about what they bring to the Northern Kentucky table. Some tables will include simple, fun designs like children’s handprints or community signatures, while others will be more elaborate with businesses hiring designers and artists to create the art. Prizes will be awarded in several categories including top honors of Best in Picnic. Winners will be awarded a plaque that will be affixed to the tables.

While some see the initiative as just a beautification project, those involved see it as so much more.

“It’s different and that’s what I like about it. We have 35 cities and three counties in Northern Kentucky. Part of our strategy with this is that we have to come together to get things done. We have to collaborate to have one voice. The Picnic Table project is symbolic in that we have to come together to do big things and we do that. We’re unique

and special in that way,” says Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce President Brent Cooper. The chamber is supporting the project through promotion of the initiative to its members and by purchasing a table.

“Our role is to promote business growth and grow the economy and we think this was a great way to do both of those things.

The chamber table design is being created by a commissioned artist and is expected to highlight the organization’s key objectives—to lead, connect and advocate.

For Christopher Bednar of the Newport Parks Renaissance Commission, the project provides a way of helping the commission meet its goal of beautifying the parks and representing the people of the community.

“It’s an opportunity to kind of cover several bases at one time,” he says. “Picnic tables are useful to those who visit our local parks and green spaces. They will also deliver a message or artwork to areas that may otherwise be bereft of such things. And the fact that they will end up in parks is a huge bonus for us as this is exactly the type of thing we strive for. The fact that we get to work with other nonprofit groups to make this reality is icing on the cake.”

Numerous sponsors stepped up to the plate to make the event possible, including

ArtsWave, which gave a grant that provided 10 tables that were then given to deserving organizations who otherwise couldn’t participate.

“The Picnic Table Project uses art to deepen roots to the community. The review committee was impressed not only by the scale of the project—joining painted picnic tables across the Purple People Bridge, a visually stunning sight—but by the initiative to link our community together through art and food. We believe that the project will also enliven Northern Kentucky communities through both the picnic itself, as well as through the public art installations that will remain after the event is done.

Supporting this project was a win-win for ArtsWave,” says Kathy DeBrosse, ArtsWave vice president of marketing and engagement. “A relatively simple idea, the picnic table project, weaves together creativity and community through a shared experience.

It uses the arts to represent and celebrate the vitality of our neighborhoods, while creating opportunities for people from both Kentucky and Ohio sides of the river to make new connections and strengthen their ties to the Greater Cincinnati region.”

NKY Makes B-Line for Bourbon Bourbon branding effort aims to expand Northern Kentucky tourism

here’s more to Kentucky’s bourbon culture than the “amber triangle,” the central Kentucky area where the commonwealth’s heritage distilleries are located.

Northern Kentucky’s Convention & Visitors Bureau has launched the B-Line, a marketing and branding effort featuring three distilleries, four bourbon-centric restaurants and five bourbon bars in Northern Kentucky to take a bigger swig of the growing bourbon tourism trend.

Bourbon tourism is growing. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail and the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour surpassed more than a million visitors annually two years ago, the Kentucky Distillers Association says. The Northern Kentucky Convention & Visitors Bureau says bourbon tourism is one of the factors fueling a 16 percent

increase in Northern Kentucky tourist spending last year.

“The thing we’re trying to bring home is that the real bourbon line is the Ohio River,” says Julie Kirkpatrick, vice president of sales and marketing for MeetNKY. “Once you cross it into Kentucky you’re in the state where 95 percent of the world’s bourbon is made and we like to say 100 percent of the best bourbon is made.”

The B-Line was formally launched in April with a full-scale marketing effort in markets such as Chicago, Cleveland and Detroit.

“Kentucky is known for bourbon, but the funny thing is not a lot of people know about the amazing history we have in Northern Kentucky, just across the river from Cincinnati,” says Kirkpatrick. For example, she mentions, the pre-Prohibition distilleries

Those two along with Old Pogue Distillery in Maysville are the first distilleries on the B-Line but not necessarily the last.

New Riff Distillery

The B-Line is designed to complement not compete with the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour of the Kentucky Distillers Association.

“When we talked to the Kentucky Distillers Association they were thrilled,” she says.

“They know we already have 26.1 million visitors that come to the Cincinnati region each year and more than seven million passengers through the Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky International Airport so to be able to access those and drive them deeper into bourbon country was a natural fit.”

And craft distillers offer a different experience than the older and larger distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

“I love the heritage distilleries such as Evan Williams and Maker’s Mark but when you go there you see a very structured environment. You may not actually see the craft of distilling. When you’re at New Riff or one of the other stops on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Craft Tour you’re literally right in the middle of distilling because they’re not very big and are built to be a very immersive experience.”

Hannah Lowen, vice president and general manager of New Riff Distilling, says tourism is a central part of New Riff’s business.

“The distillery was designed from the getgo with tourism in mind,” she says. “One of

the things we offer here is an opportunity to see a fairly large working bourbon distillery.

We let you in every nook and cranny of the place. Tourism was planned from the beginning in the way the building was designed and in our event center we have two spaces to bring people in.”

New Riff draws about 30,000 visitors annually for its tours and events. Lowen says it expects that to grow with the development of the B-Line.

The B-Line formalizes what’s been going on organically in the local bourbon scene for a while, she says.

“When folks come visit us and want to know what to do next we say, ‘Oh you should go to Boone County or see Old Pogue, or here’s a great place to get a drink.’

“Leveraging these assets is a no-brainer.

We are thrilled.”

Stephen Williams, owner/chef at Bouquet in Covington, one of the B-Line restaurants, says it already has had an impact on his business.

“We’ve had people drive up from Lexington and Louisville already saying they heard about us down there. Bourbon is a statewide thing,” he says. “If it gets people in on it here and then on to the rest of the state, it’s win-win for everybody.”

A farm-to-table restaurant, Bouquet has shifted its focus from wine to bourbon over

the last couple years.

“We pared our wine list down from about 200 bottles to 70 and increased our bourbons from 5-10 bottles to 140 now,” he says.

A Louisville native, Williams says, “I’ve always been interested in bourbon and with its growing popularity more customers are asking for bourbon and cocktails.”

To be a part of the B-Line a restaurant must shelf at least 50 bourbon varieties and a bar must shelf at least 100 bourbons, Kirkpatrick says In addition, they’re required to complete Stave & Thief Society certification, a program approved by the KDA on the art and science of bourbon.

It’s an expensive training program but Williams says it allowed him to certify 10 members of his staff as well.

“It gives them more knowledge so when people come in and ask questions, they can give them proper answers. Then they’re more likely to be repeat customers.”

Two other up-and-coming Northern Kentucky craft distilleries, Second Sight Spirits in Ludlow and Neeley Family Distillery in Sparta, are expected to eventually join the B-Line. It will also be looking for more bars and restaurants, which qualify, to participate.

The Let’s Talk, Ladies video series feature five physicians in a variety of specialties.

Local providers are finding new ways to educate and help women

n Northern Kentucky, local providers are looking to connect with the community on the topic of women’s health. Instead of waiting for women to bring their questions to doctors, both St. Elizabeth Healthcare

and The Christ Hospital Health Network are reaching out to help women with everything from holistic health to drug addiction.

A HELPING HAND St. Elizabeth Healthcare is already known for its caring, compassionate care for women’s health. Its Nurse Navigator program, which was first started in the mid-‘90s, assigns a team of nurses to any woman who has been told they need to come in for additional tests after a mammogram.

While most tests come back normal, the

nurses follow the patients who need further care. From a breast biopsy through surgery, chemotherapy or radiation, the nurses help the patient navigate their cancer care, and even follow the patient for a year afterwards in case they need more assistance.

“We started out with one, but now we have about 10 [nurses]. All of the nurse navigators know all of the patients,” says Toni Carle, nurse manager of women’s health at St. Elizabeth.

Women who come to the hospital for any reason but are pregnant and test positive for drugs are invited to join the program.

“It’s multidisciplinary and they’re doing counseling with them, they’re seeing the physicians in the Journey to Recovery Center, and it takes about 12 months. After they’ve had the baby they follow the mom and try to get her into treatment post delivery as well,” says Carle. The state, which has provided some of the program’s grants, is already looking at using the program in other parts of the state.

Another outreach program is the Nurse Family Partnership program. The program has nurses do home visits with expecting mothers to help prepare them for their future child. The program is referral and word-of-mouth based, but it mostly helps women with limited resources.

“They also help after the baby is here with making sure that they’re bonding and that they are developmentally working with the child and making sure that they have a

successful infancy up to 2 to 3 years old,” says Carle.

Both programs reflect St. Elizabeth’s commitment to women and infants. In fact, St.

TIME TO CHAT The Christ Hospital Health Network is educating women on all aspects of their health through a new initiative called Let’s Talk, Ladies.

The multi-format initiative features videos, live events and a website that organizes health information by a woman’s stage in life.

“What we’re trying to do is really look at it as a women’s life, not just ‘OK, here’s their gynecology care and now they’re pregnant and here’s their menopause.’ But looking at what else does that mean for their bones? For all types of health—their breast health, their cardiology, their heart health.

So looking horizontally over a women’s life rather than just focusing on the aspects of OB-GYN care,” says Dr. Leanne Olshavsky, the associate medical director for women’s

health and medical director of the family birthing center for The Christ Hospital Health Network.

The videos, for example, features five female physicians—orthopedic specialist Dr. Sandra Eisele, OB-GYN Olshavsky, urogynecologist Dr. Aparna Shah, breast surgeon Dr. Jennifer Manders and internist Dr. Geraldine Vehr—who discuss the problems women may face, from stress and overscheduling to specific health matters.

When this publication went to print, two panel videos were available for free online.

In addition to the videos, women can attend free live events that are held quarterly.

“It’s a panel of our physicians, again, across multidisciplinary specialties, who attend the live event. There is usually something fun to do before it starts,” says Olshavsky, like a cooking demonstration.

Attendees are encouraged to anonymously submit questions.

“We read the questions out loud and the panelists answer the questions and it ends up being really fun. We get some hysterical questions. The women can really be interactive about asking the questions, hearing

from the specialists, and it’s a super fun event. There’s wine, there’s fun beverages, usually there’s a little gift so it’s just a way to engage the community,” says Olshavsky.

Previous events have covered topics like menopause, what to do after you’ve had a baby and what women should know when they’re trying to get pregnant.

Olshavsky says that the events have already become very popular. “Every event has sold out and most have waiting lists,” she says.

The goal of the initiative is ultimately to help women look at their health in a more holistic manner instead of only looking at certain aspects.

“I think that the most surprising thing is that [different health issues] all intersect all the time, or very frequently or more frequently than you may think,” says Olshavsky. “How does your period affect breast changes? How do hormones or absence of them affect your overall cardiovascular health? … Just really looking at these things less in a silo and more in a really horizontal approach. This is the patient as a whole.” n

A

s more baby boomers enter retirement age, retirement communities are working to make themselves more desirable for the growing number of retirees.

One trend local communities are seeing is a desire for a more homelike atmosphere.

According to a report by J+J Flooring Group, making communities more like home is a growing trend. One community that has made that transition is Rosedale Green in Covington.

“We wanted people to feel like they were just making an address change when

they had to move here,” says Executive Director/Administrator Londa Knollman.

They did this by making the facility into eight individual houses of 20 residents.

Each resident has their own room, but there is a shared dining room, living room and den. Instead of a large kitchen that makes the food for everyone, each home has its own kitchen, and staff can make whatever the resident wants right in front of them.

“So now we have instead of 50 staff members working in a big institutional kitchen, we have two to three working in each household kitchen and they’re right there frying eggs as people wake up and things like that,” says Knollman.

The Power of Salt Sweet Serenity Massage & Salt Therapy in Florence offers a new path to relaxation and wellness with its salt room

ran Hasekoester was looking for a solution for her own family when she came upon the idea that led to Sweet Serenity Massage & Salt Therapy.

A m a ssage t herapi st for 13 ye ars, Hasekoester was at a conference five years ago when she met someone who ran a salt room in Centerville, Ohio. “I have a grandson who has many issues and one of them was chronic lung disease,” she says.

“I was telling him about my grandson, would something like this help him, and

he’s going, ‘Oh yeah, it’s amazing what it will help with.’”

Hasekoester researched salt therapy and decided that this was something she wanted to bring to Northern Kentucky.

Sweet Serenity opened its location at 9910 C Berberich Drive in Florence a year ago and Hasekoester has already seen results from the therapy.

“Lucas has come on a regular basis since I opened up. He used to take a lot of antibiotics,” she says. “He has not had one antibiotic for a year. His pulmonologist is amazed at how well he’s been doing this past year.”

While she knows that many factors have led to her grandson’s success, she says the salt therapy was impactful, too.

Salt therapy is meant to mimic the environment of a salt cave. Salt is diffused into the air so that clients can breathe it in while relaxing in a 68-70 degree Fahrenheit room. “[It’s] much like sitting on the beach in Florida,” says Hasekoester. “It’s not like you’re going to see this stream of salt com-

ing out.” She says she tells skeptical clients to lick their lips—they can often taste the salt on their skin. Clients who wear dark clothing into the room may even notice salt on their clothing, though it can easily be brushed off.

The theory behind the salt room is that the salt causes mucus to break down and naturally drain. “Say you have asthma, hay fever, allergies, sinus conditions, even children with cystic fibrosis, it’s very helpful for them because they are always very clogged up,” she says.

While most people simply sit in the room and relax, Sweet Serenity also offers small meditation, yoga and Pilates classes in the room.

The salt room may be the reason Sweet Serenity exists, but it’s not the only service Hasekoester offers. Those who visit can get a massage—from therapeutic to hot stones to bamboo to salt scrub—or enjoy the infrared sauna. Hasekoester says she wants to offer the region many affordable ways to relax. n

hildren, adolescents and adults struggling with psychiatric problems and substance abuse have a new option for treatment in Greater Cincinnati.

SUN Behavioral Health Kentucky, a 197bed behavioral health hospital, has opened its doors in Erlanger. SUN Behavioral Health, a for-profit New Jersey-based company, teamed with St. Elizabeth Healthcare on the 149,000-square-foot facility.

SUN is the managing partner for the hospital that will consolidate St. Elizabeth’s in-patient behavioral health programs in Northern Kentucky.

“Because we’re large we’ll be able to offer specialized in-patient programs so it won’t be one program fits all,” says Dr. Chris Lockey, SUN Behavioral Health Kentucky’s CEO. In addition, he says, SUN (which stands for Solving Unmet Needs) will be offering its care to anyone in the Tristate.

“What’s exciting about our program is we can take in patients directly,” he says. “So patients no longer have to go the emergency room if they’re struggling with a psychiatric crisis. They can come directly to us for assessment. We have our own intake department that’s open 24 hours a day.”

“We have a crisis in both mental health and substance abuse in this country because we don’t have infrastructure anymore for treating these patients,” he says. “So there’s a tremendous need for places like this all around the country and especially in this area.”

Mental health disorders account for more disability than any other illness, including cancer and heart disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). One in four American adults experiences an episode of mental illness per year.

SUN’s facility, located on 13 acres on Dolwick Drive overlooking Interstate 71, is the third of four the company is opening around the country and is its first newly built facility, Lockey says.

ing, therapeutic and safe for everybody,” he says.

The building, shaped like a capital “H,” with living units on each wing, includes a lot of open space, including four courtyards.

The center of the building includes a gym with basketball courts, a chapel and occupational therapy rooms.

The living spaces are designed in a modular fashion so the number of beds around nursing stations can increase or decease depending on need.

Besides its specialized inpatient services, SUN offers two levels of outpatient treatment.

The first, partial hospitalization, is one step down from in-patient care and involves treatment six hours a day for five days a week. A step below that is an intensive outpatient program, which typically is three hours a day, three days a week.

“Someone comes in with severe depression for example, they get treated here and then transition to the partial hospitalization program, receiving intensive care but on an outpatient basis. They then could transition to the intensive outpatient program,” he says.

Lockey, who graduated from UC College of Medicine and was former medical director at Sibcy House at the Lindner Center for Hope in Mason, says, “The partnership with St. Elizabeth has really been fantastic.

s the nation’s baby-boom generation continues to age and its needs for health care increase, the demand for qualified nurses also continues to increase.

One local college now has a program to train skilled and educated nurses for the workforce in three years, instead of the typical four years. Beckfield College offers an accelerated bachelor of science degree in nursing at its Florence campus at 16 Spiral Drive.

program at Beckfield College is an accelerated three-year program that enables our students to get out of the classroom and into a nursing career a full year earlier,” says Diane Wolfer, Beckfield College CEO, CFO and president.

Highlights of the program, which started in 2017, include no pre-nursing classes requirements and no wait lists for nursing classes or clinicals. And that sets Beckfield apart from many local nursing programs, Wolfer says.

“Students are able to complete this accelerated course of study in a shorter time frame because Beckfield’s classes are focused on teaching students exactly what they need to know to become quality nurses, without excess general education courses,” says Wolfer.

And that makes Beckfield College’s accelerated bachelor of science degree in nursing

program even better than most public or private universities because they are career focused, Wolfer says. “Our students can concentrate on the course of study necessary to begin their careers without having to take excess general education classes,” Wolfer says.

The accelerated bachelor of science degree in nursing program is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, an autonomous accrediting agency contributing to the improvement of the public’s health. The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ensures the quality and integrity of baccalaureate, graduate and residency programs in nursing.

Although Beckfield College’s accelerated bachelor of science degree in nursing program can get a student from the classroom to the workplace in three years, the college

offers another program for those students who are already registered nurses.

Beckfield College offers a registered nurse to bachelor of science degree in nursing at a reduced tuition. And registered nurses can complete that program in just 18 months, Wolfer says.

“Beckfield College is committed to making our programs accessible to all students,” says Wolfer. “This online RN to BSN program can be completed in only 18 months for tuition at just $2,000 per term.”

The job outlook for nurses is positive, especially nurses with a bachelor’s degree.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 15 percent from 2016 to 2026, a rate much faster than the average for all occupations.

That job growth is driven by an increased emphasis on preventive care; growing rates of chronic conditions, such as diabetes and obesity; and demand for health care services from the baby-boom population as they live longer and more active lives, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Not only is the job market for nurses booming, but the pay a nurse with a bach-

elor’s degree in nursing can expect is equally impressive. The median annual wage for registered nurses was $68,450 in May 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Wolfer says the Bureau of Labor Statistics lists the median salary for a registered nurse in Kentucky at $57,000, while the median salary for a registered nurse in Ohio is $61,000. By earning a bachelor of science in nursing degree students are able to unlock additional job opportunities.

“Having a [bachelor of science in nursing] degree opens other career opportunities, including nursing management,” says Wolfer. In addition, the nation’s Magnet hospitals, which are recognized for nursing excellence and superior patient outcomes, have moved to require all nurse managers and nurse leaders to hold a baccalaureate or graduate degree in nursing, Wolfer says.

Those institutions applying for Magnet designation must show what plans are in place to achieve the Institute of Medicine’s recommendation of having an 80 percent baccalaureate prepared workforce by 2020, says Wolfer.

A bachelor of science degree in nursing is not only important for graduates to achieve

greater success in life, it’s also important for the patients under their care. “Nurses with advanced nursing degrees have been shown to help patients have better outcomes,” says Wolfer. “This advanced training helps them become better prepared in an increasingly complex health care system.”

Once a student graduates, Beckfield College helps them find a job. “Beckfield College provides help on the job search with resume development and critiquing, professional development training, interview coaching, personalized career planning sessions and on-campus hiring fairs and career days,” says Wolfer.

Dr. Harry L. Beck started Beckfield College in 1984 under the name Educational Services Center. The school started with two students, two programs and one location, according to the college’s website.

Beckfield College now has more than 1,000 graduates, educational offerings at two on-campus locations, online delivery and several different programs with various levels that meet today’s professional needs, according to the school’s website.

Small Bank, Big Service Commonwealth Bank & Trust marries technology and service to fulfill customer needs

ommonwealth Bank & Trust Co. is small but mighty.

With two offices in Northern Kentucky, the privately owned Louisville-based bank provides banking services that reach businesses on both sides of the Ohio River.

“One of the things a lot of people don’t know about us is we run a full-service virtual bank shop every day from our Florence location,” says Corey Sidebottom, senior vice president and Northern Kentucky market executive.

What that means is Commonwealth provides full-service banking using the latest technology such as remote deposit scanners and automatic clearinghouse services that allows its business customers to bank with Commonwealth from their office computer every day without stepping foot in the bank.

For example, he says, “one of my best clients lives in Detroit, Mich., He’s been a client for 10 years and operates Sonic Restaurant franchises in the area. He does all his banking with our Florence branch.”

lege, in addition to the Florence office on Houston Road, leverages its technology with a high level of personal service for its clients.

Sidebottom calls it “a new school-old school sandwich. We use all new-school products and technology but we use oldfashioned service techniques.”

Sidebottom says, “We’re partners with our clients.”

That service level varies based on what the client requires.

“Everybody needs bank services differently,” he says. “Some clients call us once a week, some call us every day and some maybe we see once a year. It all depends on how much service they need from us.

Whatever a client typically needs we’re willing to provide.”

As result, he says, bank executives spend a lot of time out of the office visiting clients.

And as a small institution, Commonwealth relies a lot on client referrals.

“The way people hear about us is word of mouth. We get a lot of business from

other business clients,” he says. “A client in Mason, Ohio, will send us to a friend in business in West Chester, for example. We like to think we do good work and leave a good trail behind.’’

That attention to personal service pays off in other ways such as additional retail banking business.

“What we find is we do a lot of business with a client’s employees, too,” Sidebottom says. “When someone’s buying a house, their boss will say, ‘Call my banker at Commonwealth.’ That’s old-school personal service.”

Although Commonwealth’s name may be new in Northern Kentucky, it has been operating there for nearly 20 years.

Both the Florence and Edgewood offices operated as First Security Trust Bank until 2014 when Commonwealth’s parent company, which owned both banks, merged them under the Commonwealth Bank & Trust name.

Commonwealth, which also has 15 offices in the Louisville area, today has nearly $1 billion in bank assets and trust assets of

Sidebottom, a Northern Kentucky native, is a graduate of Dixie Heights High School in Fort Mitchell and Northern Kentucky University with a degree in business management.

He joined Commonwealth more than

three years ago and has spent 15 years in commercial banking and lending in Northern Kentucky.

Another example of Commonwealth’s commitment to personal service is its support of philanthropic activities.

For example, Sidebottom is vice chairman of the BAWAC, the Boone Adult Worker Activity Center, the Florence nonprofit that provides disabled adults with skills training and employment opportunities.

Commonwealth also operates a “Jeans Day” fundraiser across all the bank’s offices.

Employees who want to wear jeans to work for a day donate $2 and each month the funds are distributed to a different charity. Recently the bank donated $600 to the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky, for example. The local offices also run regular holiday gift fundraisers.

“People ask, “How do you make it work?

You are Commonwealth Bank and nobody knows who you are,’” Sidebottom says. “But it’s not rocket science. It’s about doing the right things every day and I think we do that for our customers.” n www.BestofNKY.com
