anquet halls and hotels remain popular locations for weddings, but couples today also have unique and out-of-the-box venues from which to choose. We spoke with four

Couples can also use the terrace on Lake Como for ceremonies and cocktail hours. “With its rich history, including top celebrity performances in the ‘50s and ‘60s to the Moonlite dances that continue today, Moonlite Gardens provides an atmosphere for celebration and romance,” says Gilday. “[Couples] have heard stories from their parents or grandparents of sharing their first dance or even first kiss there.” The venue can accommodate 600 seated guests and up to 1,200 for a reception. Other features include VIP parking near the venue for the couples and their families, use of a

newly renovated bridal suite that includes a wet bar and family room-style space, catering, setup and full coordination of the event. While many couples choose to only use the venue space, couples can work with the park to have access to the park’s rides—couples have even had their photos taken on the carousel.
“Carl Krippendorf built the Lodge between 1898 and 1900 as a summer home to share with his wife, Mary,” says Julie Fleisch, sales consultant at Elegant Fare, which manages all events at the lodge. “The Krippendorf Estate (lodge and original 175 acres) was named to the National Historic Register in June of 2011.” Renovated in 2001, the lodge has a covered porch, stone patio and a semipermanent tent that is in place from late April through October. Krippendorf Lodge’s greatest amenity, though, is what’s outside—it’s nestled within 1,000 acres of forests, steams and fields. “The natural beauty of the woods and the character of the house set the stage for a beautiful outdoor wedding,” says Fleisch.
INTO THE WOODS For those looking to be surrounded by nature, the Krippendorf Lodge in the Cincinnati Nature Center’s Rowe Woods offers just that. The lodge was designed in the “shingle style” and features wood building material, long horizontal lines, sweeping porches, shingled siding and prominent roof gables.

she says. The museum also provides onsite coordination, in-house catering and bridal rooms. “Communication is the key to everything and we pride ourselves on being the best in the city,” she says.

he rehearsal dinner tends to be the first impression of how the wedding weekend will play out. Luckily, there is no rulebook that you need to follow when planning your rehearsal dinner. “I always start with what they’re looking for in that evening,” says Maura Bassman, owner of Maura Bassman Events. “Are they wanting it at a restaurant or do they prefer something where they can bring a caterer in? Are they wanting something a little bit more laid back? We go through all of those questions.” Where to start? The first thing to do when planning your rehearsal dinner is to come up with a guest list. “That’s normally where I tell people to start is to figure out who they are inviting to the rehearsal dinner,” says Bassman. “The venue will depend on how many people they are inviting.” The guest list can be one of the first obstacles of planning a rehearsal dinner. “The old tradition is that you were supposed to invite anyone who is coming from out of town for your wedding,” Bassman says. “People don’t really do that anymore just because it turns into a second wedding.”

There are many venues located in the Cincinnati area that accommodate the needs of a rehearsal dinner, from bowling alleys to fine dining restaurants. Eddie Merlot’s is one such place. Located off Montgomery Road near Interstate 275, it offers multiple options for private dining. The Merlot Room can be configured into a dining experience that allows for 82 guests for a seated dinner experience. “Most people choose the Merlot room,”
says Maggie Smith, sales manager at Eddie Merlot’s in Cincinnati. “When they get bigger than that, we can do a main dining room buyout.“ For more intimate dinners, the Cabernet Room allows for a 35-person seated dinner, and includes a lounge atmosphere. The Chardonnay Room allows for 48 guests and offers the ability to be configured to the bride and groom’s liking. Eddie Merlot’s offers four dinner menus that will fit different budgets. The most basic option offers a salad, main course and dessert for each guest. The most complex menu offers appetizers, salad, main course, sides and a dessert course. Coffee, tea and soda are all included in the four dinner options. It all depends on what the couple is looking for in a rehearsal dinner menu. “We have many options, it just depends on how much people are looking to spend,” Smith says. Eddie Merlot’s also offers the ability to create your own menu if you want
to make the night extra special. “Restaurants often get overlooked when planning a rehearsal dinner because people think it’s going to be really expensive to do,” Smith says. “The nice part about having it at a restaurant is everything that you spend is going towards what your guests enjoy.” Smith notes that most expenses are in one place as opposed to paying for a room fee, caterer and all extras that go into planning a rehearsal dinner. “The quality of food that you get is better, too,” Smith says. For those starting the planning process, Bassman has a few tips and tricks up her sleeve. “There is so much that goes into planning a wedding, try to find a place that is all inclusive, where you don’t have to bring in a lot of outside vendors,” Bassman says. Another tip that Bassman suggests is utilizing your wedding day vendors. “If you have hired an awesome caterer for your wedding and you’re at a venue where you have to provide a caterer, use that same caterer,” Bassman says. “They already know you. It makes it a lot easier for planning purposes.” n

atteica and Austin Plear had already been married eight years when they had their dream wedding this year at The Bell Event Centre. “We got married at the justice of peace because at the time we didn’t make enough for our dream wedding. After eight years married and five years of planning we finally got the chance to have the wedding of our dreams and share in our love with all the people in our lives that matter most,” says Latteica. The wedding may have been delayed, but Lattecia says doing so made both the wedding and their relationship even sweeter. “Us working hard together to accomplish our goal to have our dream wedding really renewed our love for one another,” she says.

or Alexandra and Andrew Johns, it was important to have Cincinnati play an important role in their wedding. “We loved the city skyline in the back of our ceremony and through the windows for our reception,” Alexandra says. “We loved the combination of outdoor and indoor.” The two married at the Embassy Suites RiverCenter in Covington, which was ideal for their urban-themed wedding. “We had high top tables and lounge chairs around the bar to give a loungelike feel and [to] get people away from their dinner tables. We used our outdoor space to make another hangout spot with photo booth props against the city skyline. We had a very fun DJ and really focused on having the atmosphere fun and vibrant,” she says.

Not only did it give us the aesthetic we wanted (high ceilings, neutral in tone, modern), it came with an awesome wedding package that included food and drink, on-site coordinators and décor,” says Ramiyah. The couple also used the nearby Hotel Covington for their ceremony. “[One] thing we wanted to be conscious of was keeping the two events in close vicinity, especially since we had a few out-oftown guests. This worked out perfectly because they were right next door and worked so well together,” she adds.
