One of Cincinnati’s true historic treasures is the iconic Belvedere, a majestic architectural masterpiece renowned for its embodiment of the Second Renaissance Revival style.

Nestled in a multi-aged, culturally diverse urban community, the Belvedere offers an artistic display of the varied facets of cosmopolitan life. Housed within the city's oldest yet most splendid buildings, the Belvedere reveals a breathtaking panoramic view of the city from its apex.

Capturing this unique ambiance, Cincy Black Magazine chose the Belvedere as the site for their photoshoot for the cover picture of their January 2024 issue. The magazine recognized the captivating beauty of the location and appreciated the opportunity to echo the historic charm and significance of this quintessential Cincinnati landmark in their cover shot.

With the advent of the 1920s, interest began in luxury apartment houses, many of multiple stories in larger American cities, most notably New York and Chicago.

These buildings, built with the highest construction standards, served as an alternative to large single-family homes or residential hotels and provided many of the services of the latter. The Belvedere is an example of this trend.

The BET's Gospel Super Fest concluded on a high note last Sunday as the acclaimed Hamilton County Commissioner President, Alicia Reece, received the Most Notable Achievement award. Reece was lauded for her visionary creation and successful establishment of the Cincinnati Black Music Walk of Fame.

CINCINNATI'S LITTLE KNOWN HISTORY FACT

DID YOU KNOW? HOW DID CINCINNATI GET THE NICK NAME ‘THE QUEEN CITY’?

The nickname The Queen City was bestowed upon Cincinnati in the early 19th century.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a famous American poet, referred to the city as the Queen of the West in his 1854 poem Catawba Wine. This title was to honor Cincinnati's impressive growth and prosperity, which made it the largest and most thriving city west of the Appalachian Mountains at the time.

Ever since then, Cincinnati has been commonly known as The Queen City.

Black Tech Week 2024 Remains in Cincinnati In A New Venue

Written By: Liz Henderson Black Tech Week is gearing up to hold its 2024 conference in Cincinnati, further cementing its roots in the city, according to an announcement by Mayor Aftab Pureval.

Having been a significant attraction in the city for the past two years, Black Tech Week draws in thousands of young black professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors nationwide. It’s a monumental triumph for Cincinnati to keep the conference within its borders, said Mayor Pureval. The mayor also labeled the conference as a cultural cornerstone and gem for the city.

The reason for choosing Cincinnati for another conference, as shared by event organizers, is the city's exemplary performance. Cincinnati outshined them all, declared Candice Matthews Brackeen, CEO of Lightship Foundation. However, they kept mum on details about next year's keynote speakers.

In its history, Black Tech Week has brought big-name stars like Serena Williams and Issa Rae into the mix. The event for next year is scheduled for July 15 through 19.

Black Tech Week, a three-day networking extravaganza, focuses on promoting entrepreneurship and inspiring more black people to break into the tech sector.

The first conference in Cincinnati took place in 2022, following the acquisition by Cincinnati-based venture capitalist, Candice Matthews Brackeen.

She conveyed the continual growth of the event each year in Cincinnati, and the next two conferences are set to be at the Aronoff Center for the Arts in 2024 and 2025.

Brackeen shared that Black Tech Week experienced venue space limitations in Music Hall after years of growing popularity, necessitating the need for an alternative location that could handle the conference's growth. She stated, Cincinnati really outshined them all.

Last year, Black Tech Week registered over 3,000 attendees, with about 120 speakers including actor, producer, and tech investor Issa Rae, and Revolt Media CEO Detavio Samuels.

The city’s acceptance and support of the event make Cincinnati the ideal host for Black Tech Week. Brackeen’s ambition is to further increase the conference’s reach and bring the attendance numbers up to 10,000 by 2026. We doubled the conference last year. That's the goal for next year, said Brackeen.

Details about the speaker line-up for the 2024 conference, slated for July 15-18, are still under wraps. Previous speakers have included global celebrities like Serena Williams. Initially held in Miami, Black Tech Week now calls Cincinnati home.

Cincy Native Pitches Her Business on 'Shark Tank' & Lands A Deal

Cincinnati entrepreneur Jasmine Hudson along with her partners, Madia Willis and J’Aaron Merchant, founders of the company Black Paper Party, made a striking impression earlier this month on the popular reality business show, Shark Tank. They landed a $250,000 investment deal with renowned businesswoman and investor, Barbara Corcoran.

Their company, Black Paper Party, based out of Philadelphia, was created in 2020 and specializes in Christmas holiday-themed products that include giftwrapping paper, decor, and home goods. The distinguishing feature of their product line is the celebration of the Black experience, depicted in their offerings through characters such as Papa Klaus and Nana Klaus.

In an episode that aired on Friday, the entrepreneurs secured a significant deal with Shark Tank’s Barbara Corcoran, which is now in the process of being finalized.

I We were pleasantly surprised, and we feel blessed, said CEO Madia Willis. We’re looking forward to growing and learning with Barbara.

She added that the company would primarily be using the investment for staffing and building inventory.

While the filming of the episode took place in June, Willis could not divulge details until after it aired. The trio had pitched to the Sharks, asking for a $250,000 investment in exchange for a 5% equity stake in their company.

The show that launched success is an iconic business reality program, where budding entrepreneurs are given a chance to negotiate deals with an elite panel of seasoned business tycoons, referred to as the sharks.

Along with their Shark Tank success, Black Paper Party has also achieved a retail presence across the country.

Their products can be found in well-known stores such as Walmart, Target, Macy's, Dollar Tree, Dollar General, CVS, and also online. The success of these Cincinnati entrepreneurs stands as an inspiring testimony for those striving to realize their business dreams.

On January 2nd, the nine elected members of Cincinnati's city council took their oath of office, initiating a new term for the council at Cincinnati's Music Hall. Councilwoman Anna Albi and Councilman Seth Walsh, newcomers to the group, are joining the council for the first time this term. Both have indicated strong commitment towards addressing the city's challenges, with Albi prioritizing public safety and reducing gun violence.

As the nine-member council embarks on the new term, Mayor Aftab Pureval reminded the team about their responsibilities towards the city. Mayor Pureval, halfway through his four-year term, voiced his expectation that the council members would approach their duties with dignity and respect.

Also during the inauguration, the council elected JanMichele Lemon Kearney as vice mayor and Victoria Parks as president pro tem. Kearney will oversee the

Committees were also appointed during the session.

The five committees, covering a range of functions, have set meeting schedules and were allocated their jurisdictional responsibilities. They range from the Budget and Finance Committee chaired by Reggie Harris to the Equitable Growth and Housing Committee chaired by Jeff Cramerding.

A significant procedure in every new term, each council member selects successor designees. This important role provides a shortlist of fellow members who would choose a replacement should a council member's seat become vacant, as seen when Reggie Harris appointed Seth Walsh to succeed Greg Landsman. Council members have now assigned their designees for this term.

This newly-inaugurated council is eager to tackle Cincinnati's issues head-on, aiming to bring about substantial, positive changes for the city's residents.

On the chilling evening of November 3, 2023, West End Cincinnati witnessed a horrifying mass shooting that claimed the life of 11-yearold Dominic Davis, leaving five others seriously injured. In an instant, Davis, a vibrant boy with his whole life ahead of him, became the city's heartbreaking statistic.

Cincinnati, once nicknamed Queen City, has experienced an unsettling rise in gun violence, a phenomenon gnawing at the tranquility of our city's youth. Tragically, these harrowing episodes aren't random incidents anymore. They paint a broader picture of the gun violence surge that continues to distress families and take young lives.

This narrative seeks to examine the causes behind the sharp rise in gun violence among Cincinnati youth and to explore how we can rebuild a safe, thriving community.

Over the past few years, several factors have catalyzed Cincinnati's increase in youth gun violence. These range from easy access to firearms, community disruption, the drug trade, a pervasive culture of violence, and gang activity. For the young people who engage in such activities, it often represents a twisted initiation into adulthood, symbolizing power, control, and respect.

Yet, it comes with a significant toll: lost lives, imprisonment, or lasting trauma.

Guns find their way into our young people's hands through numerous channels, some as deceptively straightforward as straw purchases, where guns are legally bought by people with clean records, then transferred to those who cannot legally buy or possess firearms themselves. Internet and illegal street sales are also primary avenues.

So how can we begin to address these dire challenges? The first step is providing an alternative narrative to violence, ensuring our youths realize the severe and irrevocable consequences of wielding guns. Family interventions can also make a notable difference.

If you're a parent fearing that your child may be involved in gun-related activities, first establish open lines of communication. Understand their challenges, their daily environment, and their influencers. Here are some further suggestions: 1. Learn about their friends: Know the people your child is hanging out with and what type of activities they're involved in.

Negative influences often spur trouble.

2. School engagement: Ensure regular school attendance and keep track of your child's performance. Active engagement in positive activities can curb potential drift towards crime.

3. Install values: Continually stress the importance of respect, empathy, and nonviolence. A robust moral compass can help them navigate turbulent times.

Community organizations also play an essential role in addressing this scourge.

Initiatives like mentoring programs, traumainformed services, and violence prevention initiatives should be wholeheartedly supported and adequately funded.

Beyond that, legislation could further restrict youth's access to guns, whether by bolstering the processes surrounding sales or enhancing punitive measures for those found guilty of supplying firearms to minors.

Undoubtedly, healing from such an affront will require time. Yet, with a collective and

committed effort from parents, the community, law enforcement, and legislators, we can aim to replace violence with opportunities for our youths.

Cincinnati can certainly rise again, reinforcing its nickname as Queen City - a crown worn with pride, not weighed down by grief and tragedy. A safe haven where young Dominic Davis, and the too-many other children caught up in this brutal crossfire, did not die in vain, but spurred a lasting change. Together, let us strive towards a better and safer city where our future generations can not only survive but also thrive.

A Green Future: Transforming Cincinnati into a Sustainable Utopia

Key to becoming eco-sustainable is for communities to participate in 'green' programs such as recycling drives and clean-up campaigns, encouraging bike-riding or walking for short trips, and engaging in energy-saving practices. Urban gardening and planting more trees also contribute to cleaner air, reduce the urban heat island effect, and boost local biodiversity.

Cutting back on carbon footprints can be quite a challenge, but Cincinnati has several paths available to do so. With considerable strides made in renewable energy technology, green public transport systems, energy-efficient building design, and waste reduction efforts, Cincinnati has the potential to turn this daunting task into a comprehensive and fulfilling reality.

Major corporations in Cincinnati can join in this green crusade by adapting eco-friendly business strategies.

Energy efficiency should be a significant part of this: the implementation of green energy solutions, such as solar panels and wind turbines, can drastically cut carbon emissions. Companies can also adopt a zero-waste

HAMILTON COUNTY PUSHES FOR YOUTH SPORTS COMPLEX In her recent State of the County address, Alicia Reece, President of the Hamilton County Board of Commissioners, announced the establishment of a sports tourism facility committee. This team will assess the viability of creating a large-scale youth sports complex within the Cincinnati region, with the capacity to host major tournaments.

Reece expressed during a commissioners meeting in March 2022, that she believes there is untapped potential within amateur sports. While the specifics about the type, location, and builders of the proposed facility remain uncertain, Reece hopes that the upcoming study

by Victus Advisors will bring some clarity in 2024.

The Utah-based firm started its research in September last year and interviewed local and national sports leagues and various other agencies. According to Reece, Victus is expected to submit a detailed report early this year, recommending potential sites, cost, size, offerings, and other specifics of the potential sports complex. Once presented, the final decision lies with the commissioners, who have set aside an additional $100,000 for this project in 2024.

Reece is hopeful of finding a private developer to build and own the facility while also receiving public funding from the county for the necessary infrastructure. The scale of the funding would largely depend on the results of Victus's study and the interest from the private sector.

We're going into negotiations with the Bengals. I'd like to have some of these things on the table, said Reece, referring to incorporating some youth sports programs as part of a new lease for Paycor Stadium.

While she anticipates contributions from the city's major league franchises, the extent and form of these partnerships are still to be decided.

Expressing her vision for the complex, Reece suggested the inclusion of indoor and outdoor sports arenas, with facilities for popular sports like football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, and the emerging favorite, flag football. Inspired by facilities like Spooky Nook and Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana, she hopes for a sizeable and multifaceted venue, potentially capable of hosting cheerleading competitions as well.

The project finds its support not only from Reece but also among people associated with youth sports leagues who affirm the need for larger facilities. It's packed all the time, said Dennis Dick, Ohio Director of the US Specialty Sports Association, discussing his experiences with Lou Berliner Sports Park in Columbus. Dick suggested Hamilton County take inspiration from such expansive facilities. With the possible development of a local complex, he expects that young athletes will no longer have to travel far-off distances to participate in large tournaments.

So I am originally from the great state, the peach state of Georgia. I moved to Cincinnati in December of 2016 and how I got here is I was recruited by another organization and that brought me here and I’ve been here ever since.

What Inspired Your Business?

I was inspired to start Built To Last Non-profit Solutions because as a former executive director of several non-profits in Georgia, Northern Kentucky, and Cincinnati, Ohio I felt like I started in a place where I didn’t actually know I just kind of started.

I’ve been working in non-profit organizations for 20 years and made a jump from a case manager into an executive leadership position and I was thrown in even though I had you know, support around my organization and I had to learn on the job and sometimes when starting a business, start a nonprofit organization, you are learning on the job but if I had somebody that walked with me to guide me, coach me through the process it would have been a little easier for me in the beginning but I am so appreciative for the journey. I actually work with several other or being able to work with other executive directors and other non-profits in my job, I found that we were all dealing with a lot of the same things so even though we wanted to help or we want to help the individuals and our clients the people we serve there’s also that foundational work of the organization that needs to be done and sometimes you don’t understand or even know so as a new person starting a non-profit, you want to start

something because you want to help but at the same time you don’t understand or may not even know that there’s the foundational work that needs to be completed like your incorporation paperwork, building a board of directors how to build a board of directors, the fund development piece, fundraising, the strategic planning, volunteer recruitment, donor recruitment, maintaining your donors, program management, program development there’s so much involved in starting a non-profit, maintaining that non-profit because you want to sustain it, you want to go on for years and I think of when you start your non-profit you think of you want to eradicate something, you want to help something and once you’ve eradicated that thing you transition and you move on to the next. You know I always think you want to work yourself out of a job and transition to something else but you have to be able to plan and prepare to transition to the next step Built To Last Non-profit Solutions is an organization that can help the executive director, that board, that staff plan for the next step. So I want to be that person who walks hand in hand with that organization as they make those changes.

What Are Looking Forward To For The Best Week In July?

So even though I’ve been here since 2016, this will be my very first music week. I’ve never been to Cincinnati Music Fest and I am just kind of ready to see all the people that come from all over the country to this event. I actually was talking to a potential client in another state and they mentioned that they were going to come here actually it was fun because they’re from Cincinnati so it’s like a homecoming for them and it’s kind of a celebration for those individuals that are interested in music to see the concerts and to see everybody get together and have a good time and then highlighting a lot of the businesses in the area, the food trucks, the people that make t-shirts I mean all is just a great time and just to hear the music and just being excited about such a great event.

What Impact do you wish your Business adds to the community?

My impact it that I will be able to help non-profits sustain and to help them with their foundational work and to help them last we want organizations to last we don’t want them to get to the two-year itch and then it’s like “I don’t want to do this anymore” because it can be hard there are three things that I think that a lot of non-profit directors or individuals that want to start a non-profit or if you run: CINCY BLACK MAGAZINE

You have to give yourself grace, you have to be persistent, and you have to make sure that you are prepared for all these other things that can happen you know it could be good it could be bad but just make sure that you are prepared for it. So grace, persistence, and preparation are important and I want to help them make the impact to grow in the community and past one or two years and to just make sure that they are doing what they say they are going to do and follow their mission.

Where do you see your business in the next 5 years?

In the next five years, I plan to be able to expand my business to bring on to be a training opportunity for those students that are looking to learn grant writing, those individuals or students that are interested in event planning to be able to grow and train other individuals as they grow their organizations and to be like a training hub for you know many other smaller nonprofits as well as creating tools for larger nonprofits.

What do we need to know about your business?

We’re Black Owned I guess you can see it but it was just something that started from the heart and I’m actually in a happy place and doing the thing that

I love and that’s being able to help nonprofit executive directors because I’ve been where they’ve been I’ve gone through those blood sweat and tears and not knowing what to do next and you know “Who do I partner with” “Where is my next donor going to come from”, I’ve been that lone staff member to do all the work and I want to let you know individuals know that you’re not alone, it’s not just happening to you. Q: Your logo has a small red bird sitting on the U in your logo. What does that represent?

Candice: It's Red Cardinal Bird and it was important that we got to fit that into the logo.

Growing up Red Birds were always symbolic of an Ancestral Spirit.

So it was important to me that it was included in the logo especially with the business being built from my grandmother's recipes.

Throughout this journey of opening up our storefront, there would always be a red bird around me.

Q: I love the ancestral connection. How important is it for you to incorporate that with your business?

Candice: We were very intentional in using photographs that are on the walls. They include pictures of my great-grandmother, grandmother, and my mom. This was my way of being able to pay homage to them through the business. I remember growing up in church and my grandmother would be cooking for some gathering for the community. Back then she didn't have the opportunity to start her own restaurant so having her included in this way means a lot to me. I am so grateful that she took the time to share these things with me that I can share with our city.

Q: Why was OTR a prime place for you to open your business?

Candice: We started at Findley Market. Being Downtown with all of the revitalization happening here. My father was very big on 2nd chance hiring, so it was my mission to bring my business here. That way we can create jobs for our community and help give others 2nd chances. 500% of my staff lives within walking distance from our establishment. I also love that we are right next to Nostalgia and OTR Cienma is right across the street its an amazing vibe, and I had to be a part of it.

Q: If someone was new to Cincinnati and it was their first time at Soul Secrets what would you suggest they try first?

Candice: Definitely our catfish. We were also voted best Fried Chicken in the Tri-State so try the fried chicken and our mac & cheese is top tier. We also have desserts some of my favorites are our Banana Pudding and pound cake. Our menu is fantastic you won't go wrong with anything you try on our menu.
