CINCINNATI'S LITTLE KNOWN HISTORY FACT
DID YOU KNOW? OCTOBER 28TH MARKED THE 60TH YEAR OF THE CINCINNATI CIVIL RIGHTS MARCH FROM 1963 On October 28th, we commemorated the 60th anniversary of the monumental Cincinnati Civil Rights March from 1963. This remarkable event was a significant milestone in the history of American Civil Rights Movement where over 16,000 demonstrators courageously marched through the city streets of

Cincinnati. They boldly demanded equality, justice and an end to systemic discrimination for African Americans and other marginalized groups. It was a protest that helped bring the necessity for equal rights for all citizens into sharp focus, etching an indelible mark in the annals of Cincinnati's rich historical tapestry. It's a testament to those brave marchers, and a sobering reminder that the fight for justice and equality is still as relevant today as it was six decades ago.

The Hamilton County 513 Relief Bus marked its 100th stop on Monday in Lincoln Heights, and the community celebrated its success. This bus is more than just a mobile health clinic; it is a onestop-shop for resources such as job readiness, rent assistance, and now, free birth certificates. Commission President Alicia Reece first got the idea for the bus after talking to Joe Mallory, the NAACP President. "During the Coronavirus pandemic, I took the chance and went to Hampton University which had a model similar to what I was thinking. They graciously gave me the blueprint so I could bring it back to Hamilton County," said Reece. The 513 Relief Bus was launched in the summer of 2021 with funding from the county's portion of the American Rescue Plan federal stimulus. It has already reached more than 15,000 residents. "The 513 Relief Bus is a groundbreaking innovation for the United States, and we hope our model can be seen around the country," said Reece. The bus offers a range of services, including health screenings, social services, and economic aid. CINCY BLACK MAGAZINE
The Hamilton County 513 Relief Bus Celebrates 100th Stop
While the initial idea was to make COVID-19 vaccines more accessible, Reece realized that the disparities that existed in the community would not go away after the pandemic. "Our issues don't end when COVID leaves. The disparities — the health disparities, the economic disparities — are still there," Reece said. "And so this became a new way of how we do business in Hamilton County, where we can take the services and put them on wheels and bring them out to Lincoln Heights; to bring them out to other areas throughout our county." Denise Driehaus, Hamilton County Commission Vice President, and Stephanie Summerow Dumas Commissioner were also present at the celebration, and they all shared their remarks about the success of the county's Relief Bus. To further support the 513 Relief Bus, the Duke Energy Foundation presented commissioners with a $10,000 grant. This money will go a long way in continuing to provide critical resources to underserved communities. www.cincyblacktravel.com | 19

City Hosts Community Workshops for Infrastructure Prioritization
Written By: Andrea Hall Cincinnati, OH - The Evanston Recreation Center was bustling with activity this past Saturday as community members gathered for the first of three community forums hosted by the City of Cincinnati. Despite the heated controversy over the potential sale of The Cincinnati Railroad, the workshops are not centered on the railroad but on how to spend the railroad funds, should they become available. More than 100 people were present at the first forum, which offered an opportunity for community members to ask questions and express their priorities for the City's infrastructure. The forums were received with both enthusiasm and reservation.
CINCY BLACK MAGAZINE
Ashley Harp, the Railroad Sale Community Engagement Director, said, "Giving people information will allow them to make the best decision for themselves." Some residents, however, expressed concern about participating in an event that assumes the money from the sale is guaranteed. Cincinnati City Manager Sheryl Long emphasized her administration's commitment to listening directly to citizens. "We look at the big things, but I think there are those small things which I think are tangible," she said. "I'm very excited to give people the opportunity to prioritize what we think is important."
www.cincyblacktravel.com | 22
The workshops allowed participants to meet with department heads from several city departments, including police, fire, and public works. They discussed and voted on spending priorities for any potential windfall from the railroad funds. Despite this collaborative effort, the loudest voice of opposition was heard from Issue 22's "No" campaign, led by Rev. Damon Lynch III of New Prospect Baptist Church. He and many others claim that the process has left many residents out of the decision-making process. The City will hold two more engagement workshops, the first on October 26th from 6-9 pm at Hirsch Rec Center, and the second on November 1 from 6-8 pm at the Winton Hills Rec Center. While the community remains divided over the potential sale of the railroad, city officials are optimistic that this engagement process will provide insight and prioritize necessary infrastructure improvements for the City of Cincinnati.

CITY LEADERS BREAK GROUND ON NEW SENIOR HOUSING PROJECT Cincinnati Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) CEO Gregory Johnson announced the development of a new senior citizen housing project located in the heart of Over-The-Rhine (OTR), called Logan Commons. City leaders, including Hamilton County Commission President Alicia Reece and Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval, joined Johnson and other leaders from the county, state, and federal levels to break ground on the 42 new homes for lowerincome senior residents by Findlay Market. This project is a testament to the region’s collaboration, with local and state governments coming together to create affordable housing for the most vulnerable in our community. The Logan Commons project will help meet the increasing need for senior housing in the area.
CINCY BLACK MAGAZINE
The CMHA has partnered with developers, city officials, and other stakeholders to create an attractive and modern living space that meets the needs of older adults in Cincinnati. In announcing the county’s investment of $1 million in ARPA funds towards the Logan project and $40 million for affordable housing projects in Hamilton County, President Reece emphasized the need for more senior housing options. She also acknowledged that these new investments would be instrumental in helping our city become more equitable and inclusive for all. Mayor Pureval praised the Logan Commons project, calling it an excellent example of publicprivate partnerships coming together to provide affordable housing solutions. www.cincyblacktravel.com | 24
The new Logan Commons homes are designed to provide an optimal living experience for seniors, with comfortable and accessible living spaces and modern amenities. The CMHA's commitment to creating more affordable housing is admirable, and Logan Commons is an excellent addition to the list of successful projects they've undertaken in recent years. It's refreshing to see public and private leaders in Cincinnati coming together to ensure the basic needs of our seniors are met.

My name is Tephra Fields and the name of my organization is Built To Last Non-Profit Solutions. What Does Your Business Do? We help nonprofits maximize their impact through the development of sustainable systems. Are you from Cincinnati? So I am originally from the great state, the peach state of Georgia. I moved to Cincinnati in December of 2016 and how I got here is I was recruited by another organization and that brought me here and I’ve been here ever since.

What Inspired Your Business?
something because you want to help but at the same time you don’t understand or may not even know that there’s the foundational work that needs to be completed like your incorporation paperwork, building a board of directors how to build a board of directors, the fund development piece, fundraising, the strategic planning, volunteer recruitment, donor recruitment, maintaining your donors, program management, program development there’s so much involved in starting a non-profit, maintaining that non-profit because you want to sustain it, you want to go on for years and I think of when you start your non-profit you think of you want to eradicate something, you want to help something and once you’ve eradicated that thing you transition and you move on to the next. You know I always think you want to work yourself out of a job and transition to something else but you have to be able to plan and prepare to transition to the next step Built To Last Non-profit Solutions is an organization that can help the executive director, that board, that staff plan for the next step. So I want to be that person who walks hand in hand with that organization as they make those changes.
I was inspired to start Built To Last Non-profit Solutions because as a former executive director of several non-profits in Georgia, Northern Kentucky, and Cincinnati, Ohio I felt like I started in a place where I didn’t actually know I just kind of started. I’ve been working in non-profit organizations for 20 years and made a jump from a case manager into an executive leadership position and I was thrown in even though I had you know, support around my organization and I had to learn on the job and sometimes when starting a business, start a nonprofit organization, you are learning on the job but if I had somebody that walked with me to guide me, coach me through the process it would have been a little easier for me in the beginning but I am so appreciative for the journey. I actually work with several other or being able to work with other executive directors and other non-profits in my job, I found that we were all dealing with a lot of the same things so even though we wanted to help or we want to help the individuals and our clients the people we serve there’s also that foundational work of the organization that needs to be done and sometimes you don’t understand or even know so What Are Looking Forward To For The Best Week In as a new person starting a non-profit, you want to July? start
CINCY BLACK MAGAZINE

So even though I’ve been here since 2016, this will be my very first music week. I’ve never been to Cincinnati Music Fest and I am just kind of ready to see all the people that come from all over the country to this event. I actually was talking to a potential client in another state and they mentioned that they were going to come here actually it was fun because they’re from Cincinnati so it’s like a homecoming for them and it’s kind of a celebration for those individuals that are interested in music to see the concerts and to see everybody get together and have a good time and then highlighting a lot of the businesses in the area, the food trucks, the people that make t-shirts I mean all is just a great time and just to hear the music and just being excited about such a great event. What Impact do you wish your Business adds to the community? My impact it that I will be able to help non-profits sustain and to help them with their foundational work and to help them last we want organizations to last we don’t want them to get to the two-year itch and then it’s like “I don’t want to do this anymore” because it can be hard there are three things that I think that a lot of non-profit directors or individuals that want to start a non-profit or if you run:
CINCY BLACK MAGAZINE
You have to give yourself grace, you have to be persistent, and you have to make sure that you are prepared for all these other things that can happen you know it could be good it could be bad but just make sure that you are prepared for it. So grace, persistence, and preparation are important and I want to help them make the impact to grow in the community and past one or two years and to just make sure that they are doing what they say they are going to do and follow their mission. Where do you see your business in the next 5 years? In the next five years, I plan to be able to expand my business to bring on to be a training opportunity for those students that are looking to learn grant writing, those individuals or students that are interested in event planning to be able to grow and train other individuals as they grow their organizations and to be like a training hub for you know many other smaller nonprofits as well as creating tools for larger nonprofits. What do we need to know about your business? We’re Black Owned I guess you can see it but it was just something that started from the heart and I’m actually in a happy place and doing the thing that

I love and that’s being able to help nonprofit executive directors because I’ve been where they’ve been I’ve gone through those blood sweat and tears and not knowing what to do next and you know “Who do I partner with” “Where is my next donor going to come from”, I’ve been that lone staff member to do all the work and I want to let you know individuals know that you’re not alone, it’s not just happening to you. There are other nonprofits out there that go through those growing pains it doesn’t matter if you 5 years old as an organization, 10 years old as an organization it is a natural progression you are going to change after you know 2 years, 4 years which is why it has to be important to develop a strategic plan to prep you for those changes that are going to happen because the world is changing around us and I want to be able to grow outside of Cincinnati I want to be able to grow outside of Ohio and to build up those smaller nonprofits so that they can grow as well So if you’re looking for assistance with Built To Last Non-profit Solutions, if you need grant writing, fund development, program development, organizational development, board training, executive director coaching we can be reached by calling us, emailing us, messaging us on our website www.btlns.com Facebook page you can reach by social media at BTLNS Cincy and also you can give us a call at (513)713-0222 and if you would like to send me an email you can reach me directly at tfields@btlns.com

SOUL SECRETS Food For The Soul When it comes to Cincinnati and food there are a number of place you can go for a great mean. But if there was a #1 Go To Soul Food restaurant to visit in Cincy then Soul Secrets is the place. Named #1 for their delicious fried chicken, centered Downtown between Nostalgia and OTR Cinema Soul Secrets has been known to serve some of the best southern-inspired dishes that will leave you wanting more. Cincy Black travel had the opportunity to meet the owner of Soul Secrets and discuss why her restaurant is Cincinnati's newest gem.
Q: Tell us more about yourself and what started your business. Candice: My name is Candice Holloway, owner of Soul Secrets. Soul Secrets started as an opportunity for me to connect with my teenage daughter who was dealing with depression. I began baking recipes that my grandmother shared with me to connect with her, it was an opportunity for me to create a safe space for her to open up, as well as teach her recipes that had been passed down by my great-greatgrandmother. Food brings families closer, it’s a way to connect and share. Q: Your logo has a small red bird sitting on the U in your logo. What does that represent? Candice: It's Red Cardinal Bird and it was important that we got to fit that into the logo. Growing up Red Birds were always symbolic of an Ancestral Spirit.
CINCY BLACK MAGAZINE
www.cincyblacktravel.com | 33
So it was important to me that it was included in the logo especially with the business being built from my grandmother's recipes. Throughout this journey of opening up our storefront, there would always be a red bird around me. Q: I love the ancestral connection. How important is it for you to incorporate that with your business? Candice: We were very intentional in using photographs that are on the walls. They include pictures of my great-grandmother, grandmother, and my mom. This was my way of being able to pay homage to them through the business. I remember growing up in church and my grandmother would be cooking for some gathering for the community. Back then she didn't have the opportunity to start her own restaurant so having her included in this way means a lot to me. I am so grateful that she took the time to share these things with me that I can share with our city. Q: Why was OTR a prime place for you to open your business? Candice: We started at Findley Market. Being Downtown with all of the revitalization happening here. My father was very big on 2nd chance hiring, so it was my mission to bring my business here. That way we can create jobs for our community and help give others 2nd chances. 500% of my staff lives within walking distance from our establishment. I also love that we are right next to Nostalgia and OTR Cienma is right across the street its an amazing vibe, and I had to be a part of it. Q: If someone was new to Cincinnati and it was their first time at Soul Secrets what would you suggest they try first? Candice: Definitely our catfish. We were also voted best Fried Chicken in the Tri-State so try the fried chicken and our mac & cheese is top tier. We also have desserts some of my favorites are our Banana Pudding and pound cake. Our menu is fantastic you won't go wrong with anything you try on our menu.

In a press conference led by former Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory, Cincinnati Vice Mayor JanMichelle Lemon Kearney, Head of the Democratic Party Gwendolyn McFarland, City Council Member Victor Parks, and Meeka Owens, Shawndale Green from AFSCME and Building Cincinnati's Future spokesperson Ashley Harp, the Yes on Issue 22 campaign announced a new trust fund that would secure equity for Cincinnati’s 15 rising black neighborhoods. The new trust fund will be financed by the potential sale of the Cincinnati Southern Railway (CSR) to Norfolk Southern for 1.625 Billion dollars. If approved, the sale would set the City of Cincinnati on a course of development, reconstruction, and economic growth. The sale would give Cincinnati the necessary funds to tackle issues such as deferred maintenance on infrastructure, clean air, roads, safe streets, and adequate health centers. This is crucial for the city’s black communities that have been overlooked for too long when it comes to keeping up with infrastructure. CINCY BLACK MAGAZINE
Opponents of the issue have raised concerns about transparency, the sale price being too little, the projected investment returns, and the buyer being Norfolk Southern Corp. However, the campaign assures that guardrails are in place to ensure that the money is not misspent and is accountable to the people. Former Mayor Mallory provided a brief history of the CSR, dating back to 1835 when the City of Cincinnati built a railroad to gain an economic advantage over its peer cities. The CSR was completed in 1880, and freight service has been in place. Since its inception, Norfolk Southern has leased the CSR, and the company wants to purchase the railroad. Vice Mayor Kearney emphasized that the funds generated from the sale should be used equitably. Cincinnati’s children, seniors, and families deserve safe infrastructure and www.cincyblacktravel.com | 35

economic opportunity. She also highlighted the thousands of homeless children in the Cincinnati public school system who need an economic opportunity that will come from the thousands of jobs the infrastructure project will create. Building Cincinnati's Future spokesperson Ashley Harp encouraged voters to vote yes on Issue 22. She explained that the infrastructure trust fund that would be created would give permanent solutions to the deferred maintenance of streets and other public properties. The legal safeguards by the State of Ohio will protect the CSR Trust Fund principal from ever being spent down, diversifying the city's assets and producing a reliable source of funding for the infrastructure improvements that communities desperately need. In conclusion, the Yes on Issue 22 campaign aims to ensure that Cincinnati's infrastructure and communities thrive, and the proposed trust fund created by the sale of CSR would go a long way in securing equity for the city's 15 rising black neighborhoods.

Exercise Your Right to Vote: The Importance of Being Informed The Black community and voting have a long and intertwined history. From the civil rights movement to the present day, exercising the right to vote has been a crucial tool in the fight for equality and justice. However, simply casting a ballot is not enough. It is equally important to be informed about the candidates and issues at hand. Our ancestors fought and sacrificed for this right, knowing that the future of our community hinges on the leaders we elect. In this blog post, we will discuss the importance of being informed and utilizing our power to vote. The Power of Voting in the Black Community Voting holds immense power within the black community. It is our tool for shaping the leadership that will guide our futures and uplift our community. By casting our votes, we are taking back our community and ensuring that our voices are heard. It is through active participation in the democratic process that we can build strong leadership and work towards a brighter future for all. Understanding and Selecting the Right Candidates When it comes to selecting the right candidates, we have the power to shape our futures. By being informed about their policies, track records, and values, we can choose leaders who will truly represent our interests. Look beyond surface-level promises and dig deep into their plans for building futures for the black community. This way, we can ensure that our votes are making a meaningful impact and creating a better tomorrow for all of us. Why Being Informed Matters Being informed matters because it allows us to make educated decisions that will have a direct impact on our community. It ensures that we are not swayed by empty promises or false information. By staying informed, we can hold our leaders accountable and work towards meaningful change. Knowledge is power, and in this case, it is the power to create a better future for ourselves and future generations. Let's exercise that power by staying informed and making informed choices at the ballot box. How Voting Impacts Access to Healthcare for African Americans When it comes to access to healthcare, voting plays a crucial role in shaping policies that directly impact the African-American community. By electing leaders who prioritize affordable and equitable healthcare, we can work towards eliminating healthcare disparities and ensuring that our community receives the care it deserves. Our votes can make a difference in improving healthcare access and outcomes for African Americans, making it a vital aspect of our political engagement. Let's use our power to vote to create a healthier future for all.
Addressing Limited Resources through Policy Change In order to address limited resources within the black community, we must advocate for policy change. By supporting leaders who prioritize equitable distribution of resources and economic empowerment, we can create a more inclusive and supportive society. It's time to address the systemic barriers that contribute to limited resources and work towards creating a community where every individual has access to the opportunities they need to thrive. Let's use our votes to drive the policy change that our community desperately needs. Honoring Our Ancestors through Active Participation in Democracy Our ancestors fought for our right to vote, and by actively participating in democracy, we honor their sacrifices. They endured oppression and discrimination, believing that one day, we would have a voice. It is our duty to honor their legacy by staying informed, casting our ballots, and advocating for change. Let's stand on the shoulders of those who came before us and use our power to create a better future for our community.
Building Stronger Communities through Political Engagement Building stronger communities starts with political engagement. By actively participating in local politics, attending community meetings, and advocating for policies that benefit our community, we can create positive change. Through collaboration, organizing, and supporting leaders who prioritize our needs, we can build a community that is resilient, thriving, and supportive for everyone. Let's come together and use our voices and votes to build a stronger, more unified community for ourselves and future generations. CINCY BLACK MAGAZINE
