ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTES

In our Off the Grid series, we invite you to unravel another mystery in the corn maze at Burger Farm & Garden Center. Just in time for Halloween, Children of the Corn Maze: In Search of the Greenville Ghost takes audiences on a spooky, site-specific adventure. Then, help us ring in the holidays! Favorite characters from A Christmas Carol are hosting an interactive social event you won’t want to miss with Mr. and Mrs. Fezziwig’s Holiday Party.

Opening in October at The Carnegie Theatre in Covington, Frida…A Self Portrait is a one-woman show that pays homage to the iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, who was bold in her brushstrokes and even bolder in life. It’s written and performed by Vanessa Severo whose connections with the artist make for a stunning production. In November at Warsaw Federal Incline Theater in Price Hill, The Lion is a solo musical that’s intimately performed by Max Alexander-Taylor. This show comes to us straight from the London stage for an exclusive Playhouse engagement.

WELCOME TO THE 2022-23 PLAYHOUSE SEASON!

All these exciting events lead up to the grand opening of our mainstage theatre complex, featuring Moe and Jack’s Place – The Rouse Theatre, in March 2023. We’re so close to bringing this once-in-a-generation project to a close, and we’re elated to show you what we and our partners at BHDP have been working on so diligently. The all-new space will officially mark the beginning of a new theatrical era.

It’s such a pleasure to be together again, this time at the Jarson-Kaplan Theater. As construction of the mainstage theatre complex nears completion in our Eden Park home, we’re thrilled to be performing a Playhouse production on this stage. To our friends at the Aronoff Center for the Arts, thank you!

Thank you for being part of our growing, diverse, artistic community. You are Playhouse in the Park.

Who doesn’t love a good mystery? Agatha Christie wrote Murder on the Orient Express in 1934, and the story continues to wow us and surprise us. Anchored by beloved detective Hercule Poirot, the tale has seen several adaptations over the years. Yet here we are in 2022, ready to uncover clues and solve the mystery anew. Under Risa Brainin’s careful direction of Ken Ludwig’s script, this show is ambitious in design, fast-paced in performance and true to its masterful source material.

*The Doctrine of Discovery is a principle of international law dating back to the late 15th century that specifically sanctioned and promoted the conquest, colonization and exploitation of non-Christian territories and peoples. Hundreds of years of decisions and laws continuing right up to our own time can ultimately be traced back to the Doctrine of Discovery — laws that invalidate or ignore the rights, sovereignty and humanity of Indigenous peoples in the United States and around the world.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES

after two and a half years. Five of our original actors came together with five other brilliant performers to create yet another dream cast. The scenic design has been beautifully reimagined by Rob Koharchik to fit the Jarson-Kaplan Theater, and all of the designers have seized the opportunity to have a fresh look at this timeless piece. In short, we are back with renewed vigor!

12 | 2022–2023

And, let’s face it, who doesn’t love a good murder mystery? Published in 1934, Murder on the Orient Express has been adapted into three radio plays (1966, 1992 and 2017), two films 40 years apart (1974 and 2017), three television programs including a Japanese version in 2015, and one lone play which premiered in 2017. I find that 32-year gap between the novel and the first radio play so intriguing. Why didn’t anyone take a crack at it for all of those years? And more intriguing: why has there never been a stage adaptation before now? Well, a story with 13 characters, set in a restaurant in Istanbul, on a train platform, in three different sleeping compartments, an observation deck, a corridor and a dining car on the stunning Orient Express may have been daunting to some…but not Ken Ludwig. Agatha Christie wrote fabulous roles, and Ludwig’s version exploits, expands and delights in those wonderful renderings. He has remained true to the original when it comes to portraying these delightfully complex, dramatic and quirky individuals. Creating a dynamic world for this play was challenging in the very best of ways. We hope you’ll enjoy the ride!

In March 2020, we opened this production of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express at Indiana Repertory Theatre with the full expectation that in about three weeks’ time, we’d be performing at the Playhouse. Creating the production was one of the most joyful experiences of my career. We brought together a magnificent group of actors from around the country and a first-rate design team. We were incredibly proud of the work and couldn’t wait to share it with you. When Covid hit and the world shut down, we never lost hope that we might remount the production. The cast even had Zoom reunions over the pandemic to keep that dream alive! Then the wonderful call came from Blake Robison inviting us to regroup and open the 2022-23 season. Thank you, Blake. It’s difficult to express how deeply happy we are to be coming back to this piece

AGATHA CHRISTIE’S MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS

It is an absolute pleasure to breathe life into Agatha Christie’s dramatic and stylish people on the stage. Murder on the Orient Express is an especially lush story, set in an exotic location and a very stylish bygone world. The costume design presents how each character wishes to be perceived, using a high style appearance as a foil to deceive.

Every piece of music begins as an experiment, as well as an adventure I look forward to with absolutely no idea where the score will land. I enjoy the mystery of creativity, imagining how the author’s text develops in rehearsals into a fully staged production. Clues provided by the playwright merge with wisdom from the creative team to yield the first sketch, a demo to share with the director and her team. Ideas always require refinement, and eventually we hit the sweet spot with music that serves as a key link between the drama and the audience. The map for this particular adventure includes two previous productions that I worked on with director Risa Brainin: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (2012) and Holmes and Watson (2018), murder mysteries infused with the romanticism of the 19th century. I’m excited and grateful for this opportunity at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park with Risa for this production of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express

SET DESIGNER’S NOTE

SCENIC RENDERINGS BY ROBERT KOHARCHIK

As a fan of Agatha Christie, designing the set for Murder on the Orient Express was both thrilling and challenging. Inspired by images of the Orient Express and by the Art Deco style, the set design for this production endeavors to capture the opulence of the period while providing fluid movement from one train car to the next as we watch one of Christie’s most memorable characters solve the

AGATHAcase.

Written and Performed by VANESSA SEVERO

Frida Kahlo, the iconic Mexican painter, captured the difficulties and wonders of her life with incredible vibrancy. Now, she comes to life onstage through playwright and performer Vanessa Severo. With music and movement, this searing new play cracks open a powerful portal between Vanessa and Frida bringing breathtaking physicality and raw honesty to this stunningly creative production.

WARSAW FEDERAL INCLINE THEATER

Sponsored by Roto-Rooter

Straight from the London stage for an exclusive Playhouse engagement, The Lion features a singer-songwriter who shares the turbulent story of his family and his own brush with mortality. He explores love, loss and the redemptive power of music through heartrending monologues and original songs. Hailed by critics as a “wondrous” and “spellbinding” experience, The Lion redefines the genre of musical theatre.
