Deerfield Township Receives Financial Management Awards

Local governments play an important role by providing essential services to communities including infrastructure maintenance and improvement, parks and recreation programming, public safety initiatives, and community development services. However, they must do all of this work in a manner that generates the greatest possible return for each dollar of taxpayer money invested. Here in Deerfield Township, we take this responsibility seriously. Managing taxpayer resources is one of our top priorities. Fiscal planning and management are essential for ensuring that your investment in our community is used effectively and efficiently to meet the needs of all who live or work in Deerfield Township.

We have always taken a great amount of pride in our commitment to sound and prudent fiscal strategies. Our management team takes great care to manage Township funds, implementing effective fiscal policies that allow us to deliver the highest quality services in cost efficient ways. This approach also helps us improve our community’s long term financial stability, building reserves and creating financial reserves to weather unforeseen events or economic downturns. I am happy to report that the results of audit for the past fiscal year demonstrate the Township remains in good financial shape. Two recent awards confirm the effectiveness of this effort.

Deerfield Township was recently given the State of Ohio Auditors Award with Distinction. Each year, the Ohio Auditor’s Office presents this prestigious award to local governments and school districts upon the completion of a successful financial audit. Entities that receive the award must meet the criteria for a “clean” report. Specifically, the audit cannot contain any findings for recovery, material citations, material

weaknesses, significant deficiencies, or questioned costs. The entity’s management letter cannot include any comments related to ethics referrals, questioned costs, bank reconciliation issues, or issues related to public records or meetings.

Township officials also received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). This program was established in 1945 to assist local governments by suggesting ways for them to go beyond minimum and generally accepted accounting principles. In addition to this much deserved recognition, award recipients also receive recommendations for improvement. We take these suggestions seriously and incorporate them into our annual program of work. Even with our success, the Township remains on a path of continuous improvement with regard to fiscal management.

Preparing detailed comprehensive financial reports on an annual basis demonstrates our commitment to transparency and accountability. These awards represent the highest forms of recognition in government accounting and prove that we are on the right track. Each year, we develop a comprehensive annual budget that aligns with our community’s goals and priorities, all while maintaining sound fiscal policies. Working together, we can guarantee that Deerfield Township continues to be one of the best and well managed communities in Ohio.

Being a resident of Deerfield for over 25 years I am proud of our Township and our employees.  Each one of them truly has a public servant’s heart to serve our community with the highest respect for our tax dollars.  I am confident that we will continue to deliver a high level of effective service at the lowest, open and transparent cost.

Mason Veterans Memorial

This year, the City celebrates the 20th anniversary of the dedication of the Mason Veterans Memorial. To honor this landmark and its significance to the community, the City of Mason is investing in substantial improvements to the Memorial. This work includes new landscaping, lighting, concrete, replacement of memorial bricks, the addition of the Space Force monument stone as well as a new Gold Star Families Memorial and Purple Heart Memorial along with reflection benches. These improvements could not be done without the partnership with local organizations such as American Legion Post 194 and VFW Post 9622. The City of Mason and the Mason Veterans Board of Affairs are excited to showcase these renovations to the public on Veterans Day, November 11, 2023.

The Mason Veterans Memorial includes pillars representing major conflicts in American history. The height of each pillar is proportional to the number of casualties in the war. At the end of the row is a low stone representing the hope for peace and the end to casualties in war. The new Gold Star Family Memorial will serve as a powerful reminder that no one has given more for this nation than the families of the fallen heroes. The new Purple Heart City Memorial offers a continuous reminder and tribute to the 1.7 million Americans who have received a Purple Heart medal and provides a way to commemorate their sacrifice to our nation. The United States Space Force is the newest branch in the Armed Forces. A new Space Force monument will be added to the Mason Veterans Memorial as part of the improvements this year.

The Never Forget Garden will continue to reside adjacent to the Memorial. The Garden is a nationwide invitation to all Americans to plant gardens as a visual way to represent America’s unwavering commitment to remember and honor military and their families.

Each commemorative memorial brick is a dedication to a veteran or active military member. With the installation of new

Powder Keg Harley Davidson

A Great Corporate Citizen and Good Neighbor

Powder Keg Harley-Davidson was established in 2009 and the current general manager has been running the dealership since 2016. In recent years, the dealership has made great strides to establish itself as one of our area’s better corporate citizens. Indeed, Powder Keg H-D has a strong connection with the local community. Food drives, toy collections, and other service events fill their calendar year round.

The highlight of their philanthropy comes in the fall when they team up with “Sleep in Heavenly Peace” and transform the parking lot turns into a huge wood workshop with the goal of building as many builds as possible for underprivileged children. In 2022, a Sunday morning bedbuild attracted over 80 volunteers, and 57 beds were built and donated to the community.

The name “Powder Keg” represents their dedication and loyalty to generations of American workers. Today, the dealership employs more than 60 people. They sell new and pre-owned motorcycles, but that is not all. Along with motorcycle sales, Powder Keg has an award-winning service department that includes several master technicians. Their work ranges from regular maintenance to completely custom Harley-Davidson builds.

Powder Keg H-D also has a robust parts and accessories department allowing customers to fully customize their motorcycles to fit their individual styles. The company’s popular apparel and merchandise depart-

ment includes everything from clothing and riding gear to home decor and drinkware!

During the year, Powder Keg H-D hosts a number of special events that are open to everyone in the community. During “riding season,” their parking lot comes alive with live music, food-trucks and more. Every second Saturday from March to October, Powder Keg H-D turns their focus from two-wheels to four when they invite car enthusiasts in for a cruise-in with free donuts and coffee, and live music.

The current management team has big plans for the dealership. They plan to continue expansion of their community programming, strengthening their presence in the community. A future renovation and expansion of the store are planned, with several improvements designed to create a true “family friendly” experience for customers. Not to mention, more special events are planned for the fall. To learn more about what’s happening at the dealership this month, go to https://powderkeghd. com.

Leaf Pickup Schedule & Requirements

OCTOBER 30 - DECEMBER 1 (

According to the posted schedule, the Deerfield Township Service Department will begin leaf pickup in the Fall.

Crews will only pick up bagged leaves; paper bags are preferred. The bags should be securely tied and placed in the grass berm in front of your residence. Please DO NOT include grass clippings, twigs, rocks, etc., in the bags.

Bags of leaves should be placed out at the street on the same day you typically place your trash out for curbside pickup. Depending on the weather and the volume of bags placed for pick up, exact leaf pickup days may vary. For additional information, please contact Jim Houston, Deerfield Township Service Supervisor, at 513-697-2753 or jhous@deerfieldtwp.com.

Fall is a beautiful time of year but it can also be messy. As the leaves change color and fall from the trees, they can quickly cover your lawn and make it look untidy. There are a few different ways to deal with leaves, and the best method for you will depend on your individual circumstances and preferences.

BAGGING LEAVES

Bagging leaves is the traditional method of leaf removal. It is a relatively simple process that can be done with a rake and a bag. However, bagging leaves can be time-consuming and labor-intensive, especially if you have a large lawn. Additionally, bagged leaves can be unsightly and can attract pests and rodents.

Back To School Reminders

As students begin preparing for their return to school, City of Mason Campus Safety offers safety reminders for traveling to and from school this year.

WALKING OR RIDING A BICYCLE TO SCHOOL

• Plan a safe route to get to and from school.

• Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street and always cross the street at crosswalks or intersections.

• Walk your bike across the street and through crosswalks.

• Always wear a bicycle helmet when on a bike, no matter how short the ride.

• Ride your bicycle on the right side of the street, with the same direction as traffic.

• Wear bright colored clothing to increase visibility.

• Avoid distracted walking/bicycling.

• Please do not wear earbuds while walking across the street.

RIDING A BUS TO SCHOOL

• Teach your child to stand at least six feet (three or four giant steps) away from the curb when waiting at the bus stop.

• Make sure your child and the bus driver are always able to see each other.

MULCHING LEAVES

Mulching leaves is a more environmentally friendly option than bagging. When you mulch leaves, you are essentially composting them on your lawn. Mulched leaves add organic matter to the soil, which can improve drainage, aeration, and water retention. Mulching leaves can also help to suppress weeds and attract beneficial insects.

WHICH METHOD IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

The best method for removing leaves from your lawn depends on your circumstances and preferences. If you want a quick and easy way to remove leaves that benefit your lawn, mulching may be the best option. If you want to remove leaves from your yard entirely, bagging your leaves for pickup by Deerfield Township may be the best option.

Why can’t residents rake or blow leaves to the curb or street in Deerfield Township?

• It can create a hazard for drivers. When leaves are blown into the street, they can create a slippery surface that can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles. This can lead to accidents, injuries, and even deaths.

• It can clog storm drains. When leaves are blown into storm drains, they can clog the drains and prevent water from flowing freely. This can cause flooding, damaging property and making it difficult for emergency vehicles.

• It can create a nuisance for neighbors. When leaves are blown into the street, they can end up on neighboring properties. This can be unsightly and create a mess for neighbors to clean up.

DRIVING TO SCHOOL

• Please do not block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light.

• Please do not pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians.

• Do not pass a school bus when it is stopped to load or unload children. Please stop at least ten feet back to allow children to safely enter and exit the bus.

• Watch for bicyclist and leave three feet between your car and the cyclist when slowly passing in the same direction.

The Ohio Distracted Driving Law was enacted in spring 2023. It is illegal to use or hold an electronic device in your hand, lap or other parts of the body while driving. Please remain alert while driving.

PROTECT: Women’s Self-Defense

The City of Mason’s Campus Safety Team initiative was developed in 2005 to improve safety and advance the partnerships between the City, Mason City Schools, business partners and the community. The Campus Safety Team serves as a resource for your safety training needs. In addition to threat assessments, de-escalation training and active assailant workshops, PROTECT: Women’s Self-Defense classes have become more and more popular at Mason Municipal Aquatic Center. An increased situational awareness of your surroundings is a crucial step to ensuring your personal safety.

The PROTECT: Women’s Self-Defense classes are intended to educate and empower you by improving your situational awareness helping you predict, identify, and avoid situations where harmful intent may be present. The focus of the course is on understanding and adopting personal safety habits that will harden you as a target and prevent a potential predator. This hands-on class will provide you some basic self-defense moves for when/where avoidance isn’t possible.

The Campus Safety Team will cover topics such as online security, home and vehicle security measures, and safe practices when out and about or away at college. These monthly classes are open to all ages and levels of ability.

Increased situational awareness can help you protect yourself and give you the chance to protect another community member. Together we can continue to build a culture of wellness in Mason. Register at imaginemason.org.

City of Mason PACE Program

Council activated a City of Mason Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) energy incentive made available by the State of Ohio and utilized as an economic development tool targeted to commercial and manufacturing businesses for access to aff ordable long-term fi nancing for energy improvements to their buildings. Mason formalized the Mason PACE Program by joining the I-75 Energy Special Improvement District (ESID) that includes Liberty Township and the cities of Monroe and Fairfi eld.

PACE is a program developed by the United Stated Department of Energy and allows property owners to have the ability to make their homes and businesses more effi cient. PACE improvements may include projects such as lighting upgrades, new HVAC systems, building insulation, roof replacement, water conservation, fire resiliency, or installing solar panels.

PACE fi nancing includes cooperation between the property owner, a lender, the municipality, and the ESID. The PACE Program is authorized and governed under the Ohio Revised Code and owners work with local jurisdiction to approve projects, secure approved PACE lenders and to assist with establishing special assessments necessary for the needed fi nancing. Payments from the property owners are made to the county and the county then reimburses and distributes those funds. The local government is not responsible for any

financial default by the third-party business.

The launch of a PACE program is a multi-step process including formalization for additional projects to be considered. Remtec Automation’s parent company, CM Paula was identifi ed as the initial project as part of this effort and fulfilling the current CM Paula/Remtec project puts in place a framework and a team that will make this program available for other qualifying projects in the City. CM Paula’s use of the PACE program helped to facilitate this expansion and is expected to further assist with the evaluation of best practices for use of the PACE program within the City’s business community. The PACE program helps CM Paula facilitate the installation of $2.3 million in investment in the creation of manufacturing jobs in conjunction with the expansion project that City Council supported in September of 2022.

The City of Mason’s participation in the I-75 ESID will help with broader economic development opportunities for companies and commercial organizations. As additional projects are considered within Mason’s PACE program, the City will work closely with legal representatives and the ESID Board to evaluate program operations and development of policy guidelines to best serve objectives. Mason Loves Tennis

Founded in 1899, the Western & Southern Open has called Cincinnati home for over 124 years, with the last 44 years in Mason. The tournament is the oldest tennis event in the U.S. held in its place of origin and is one of the largest summer tennis events in the U.S. after the U.S. Open. It shares its status with the Miami Open, Indian Wells Open, Italian Open and Matura Madrid Open. The men’s event is a Masters 1000 level tournament on the ATP Tour and the women’s event is a WTA 1000 level event on the WTA Tour. Rounding out the super nine top tier tournaments around the globe are the Canadian Open, Monte-Carlo Masters, Paris Masters and the Shanghai Masters.

Volunteerism and philanthropy are at the core of what has grown this tennis event to today’s world-class sporting event. The inspiration began 40 years ago with a group of prominent Cincinnatians who formed Tennis for Charity (TFC), a non-profit organization, who devised a unique way to use the tournament to support their philanthropy including growing tennis in the region by helping inner city youth.

In 1979, a stadium designated specifically for the event found a home and forever changed the landscape along I-71 in Mason. In 2002, Mason’s relationship with Tennis for Charity grew as the City provided a financial commitment to retain and continue to grow the event. And it did. In 2010, the new west building, the Paul Flory Player Center, opened and in 2011 and 2012 the tournament announced significant upgrades to the facility and grounds. In 2011 the men’s and women’s tournaments combined into a 10-day event. Today the facility features a total of 17 courts, including four tennis stadiums - Center Court, Grandstand Court, Stadium 3, and Porsche Court 10 – and is among the few venues other than the Grand Slams

FITNESS

with more than two permanent stadiums. This footprint provides 23 acres of space for players, media and fans, a ticket office, entry plaza, food court and exhibit areas for fans to enjoy a close-up experience with the top men and women tennis greats in the world.

Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week is observed each year the week of October 9 and this year runs from Sunday, October 8 through Saturday, October 14. The Great Chicago Fire started the night of October 8,1871. By the next day, aided by strong winds, the fire was in full force. The fire eventually destroyed approximately one third of the property valuation of the city. While hundreds died in Chicago, a little-known fact is that the Great Chicago Fire was not the biggest or deadliest fire that week. In northern Wisconsin a fire storm, aided by the same strong winds generated by a cold front from the west, burned 12 communities, approximately 1.5 million acres and had a death toll that while undetermined because of the total destruction of population records and survivors, is thought to be as many as 2,500 people.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) utilizes this week to bring awareness to fire safety in the community. In recognition of Fire Prevention Week and to celebrate Mason Fire Department’s 20-year anniversary, the Department will hold an open house at Fire Station 51 on Sunday, October 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year’s open house will include a grill out, demonstrations, touch-a-truck opportunities, and more. In addition to the open house, the annual “Smoke Alarm Blitz” will occur again as firefighters go door-to-door to check or install smoke alarms and replace smoke alarm

Help Keep Deerfield Beautiful!

Our service department does an amazing job keeping all of our roadways and parks beautiful, and this is no small task. To keep our parks in tip top shape, we depend on volunteers and their passion for making a difference in our community. We are looking for more adults to join their efforts.

Cincinnati Nature Center volunteers have donated their service to maintain the pollinator gardens and prairie since they were installed in 2020. “In 2020 and 2021, the Nature Center installed 6 large pollinator beds and a 2 acre prairie along the walking path from the pavilion on Irwin Simpson to the lake area on the other side of innovation way.

Securing a group of dedicated volunteers to help tend these beds would be a tremendous benefit to the township and to the guests visiting the park,” says Christopher Cory, Director of Conservation. Volunteer positions are self-directed, and can work in groups or independently. Basic landscaping/gardening knowledge is helpful, but certainly not necessary. Cincinnati Nature Center will help you learn! Volunteers help with weeding, mulching, planting, and watering. For more information, please contact Cory at cchristopher@cincynature.org or Sarah at skirby@deerfieldtwp.com.

Kings Schools

Congratulations to the Kings Early Childhood Center (previously named Kings Preschool) for receiving the Ohio Department of Education’s Five-Star Step Up to Quality award.

Step Up To Quality (SUTQ) is a five-star quality rating and improvement system in the state of Ohio. It is administered by the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The system recognizes and promotes early care and education programs that meet quality program standards that exceed licensing health and safety regulations. The program standards are based on national research identifying standards that lead to improved outcomes for children.

Our Kings Early Childhood Center had its extensive state audit last week and earned a 5-star rating for the second time.

Krista Taylor, ODE Auditor and Licensor commented on how impressed she is with how great the program is doing for such a large program. She said, “This is the most impressive preschool I have seen.” She specifically complimented how well the teachers run their classrooms. She also said that Columbus always asks the auditors for examples of exemplary programs. She said that she would let them know that Kings Early Childhood Center is a top example of early childhood education.

The program received its first five-star rating in 2016. Principal Mary Beth Fosse said, “We are so proud of the work that our staff does to make this the best early childhood education setting for children.”

Kings Early Childhood Center provides excellent early childhood education and special education services for over 200 of Kings’ youngest learners. For more information on the programs offered contact KECC Principal Mary Beth Fosse at 513398-8050, ext. 10043.

Congratulations to the Kings Treasurer’s Office staff for receiving a clean audit report from the Ohio Auditor of State, awarding them the Auditor of State Award for Excellence in Financial Reporting.

The District also received the Highest Achievement in Open and Transparent Government for the 3rd year in a row! Only 16% of entities audited in the State of Ohio were awarded this achievement.

This is the 7th year in a row that the District has received this honor. The financial audit report is designed to provide citizens,

taxpayers, investors, and creditors with a general overview of the District’s finances and show the District’s accountability for the money it receives. Kings Local Schools’ financial audit report can be found by searching for the District at ohioauditor.gov.

Congratulations to Kings Treasurer, Mike Morrow, and his staff, Jane Boehm, Lori Birch, Dawn Rich, and Jill Nickels who do the work daily in order to make the Treasurer’s Office run smoothly!

The Ohio Department of Education announced that Kings Mills Elementary has received the Purple Star designation and is a member of the Purple Star Class of 2023. This year’s class includes 165 schools from across the state.

The Purple Star Award recognizes schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. Schools that earn the award will receive a special Purple Star recognition to display on site.

A school is honored with a Purple Star if it completes the required activities need for designation. Ohio is home to 511 active Purple Star schools that dedicate time and supports to students in military families. KME joins J.F. Burns and South Lebanon Elementary as Kings Local School District Purple Star Schools.

The Kings Local School District is proud to announce that we have, once again, been named a Best Community for Music Education by the Nationa Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education.

The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Kings music teacher Scott Hayward answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs.

This is our 7th year in a row to be awarded this special designation, and we are grateful and proud of our award-winning music staff: Carolyn Dillon, Scott Hayward, Matt Jenkins, Jennifer Maegly, Mike Maegly, Brian McDonough, Hope Milthaler, Joe Polen, Jennifer Reeder, Melanie Sherby, Rana Southern, and Chris Weber.

Halloween Safety

As the leaves begin to change color and it starts to get dark outside sooner in the Fall children start to get excited for Halloween! On Monday, October 31, little ghouls and goblins nationwide will head out with friends and family to partake in Halloween festivities. The City of Mason utilizes the Trick-orTreat date and time to promote safety in the community and for residents to expect more foot traffic in neighborhoods and on streets. Please keep in mind trick-or-treating is at the discretion of each resident and/or neighborhood. If you choose to participate, please turn your lights on to notify trick-or-treaters they are welcome. Below are a few tips to ensure a safe and happy Halloween.

TRICK OR TREAT WITH AN ADULT

Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups. Carry your cell phone with you in case there is an emergency. Have a plan and a meeting place set up ahead of time if you and any of your children or group get separated. Make sure children know their home address and parent’s phone numbers to assist police if they get lost.

KEEP COSTUMES BOTH CREATIVE AND SAFE

• Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.

• Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of full masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.

• Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.

• When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.

WALK SAFELY

• Always use sidewalks when available.

• Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.

• Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep a careful watch as you cross.

• Make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.

• Watch for cars turning or backing up.

• Put electronic devices down and keep your head up.

• Never try to cross the street between parked cars.

• Parents, practice walking with your child using sidewalks and crosswalks when available.

DRIVE EXTRA SAFELY ON HALLOWEEN

• Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.

• Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.

• Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.

• Eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.

• Drive slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances.

• Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.

Be on the lookout for Mason Police Officers out and about with treats for trick-or-treaters. Have a safe and happy Halloween in the City of Mason.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHTLynx Financial Group, LLC

In 2001, Lynx Financial Group, LLC opened its doors with the intention of helping families reach their home ownership goals. Their experienced team helps new buyers seeking their first home, families hoping to refinance, and empty nesters looking to downsize. Lynx President Andy Cebulskie often refers to his company’s motto, “No Family Left Behind”, as the motivation for their daily work.

As an independent mortgage company, Lynx works with an array of lenders to locate and negotiate the best rate and type of loan for each client. The company can find mortgage plans for many different situations, including families with suboptimal scenarios. Cebulskie explains, “Think of wholesale vs. retail. The wholesale aspect of an independent mortgage company gives us more negotiating power.”

Cebulskie likes that his team provides a local face and name to the business. They also on average can offer lower closing costs. There are

no additional fees beyond the regular costs involved with obtaining a loan. Lynx also provides clients with good communication as well as fast and efficient service. One realtor commented to Cebulskie that she was “blown away” at how well Lynx clients came to closing.

At Lynx, refinancing and finding a better rate are always on the table. Contact Andy Cebulskie at Lynx Financial today to find the best mortgage for your new or current home at contact@lynxfinancial.com or call (513) 777-8383.

Defibrillators Located in Township

Many Township citizens and visitors visit our Township parks and public facilities daily. With that being said, the Fire Department and Township have joined forces to provide our citizens and visitors with the necessary tools needed for someone who may experience a sudden cardiac arrest. The American Heart Association uses the term “Chain of Survival” to describe the sequence needed for a person to survive a sudden cardiac arrest. This chain has four interdependent links: early access, early basic CPR, early defibrillation, and early ACLS. AED use combined with CPR increases the life-saving chances in an SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrest) sufferer by 75% compared to using the latter alone. The survival rate for SCA sufferers declines to 10%, with every minute left unattended. The Township and Fire Department have decided to place suitable AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) units for our Township’s facilities, Parks, Activity Buildings, and Cemetery. After evaluating several AED units, the decision was made to go with the Lifeline AED units. The Lifeline AED is perfect for a layperson to use. This unit will provide step-by-step instructions that are loud and clear to understand, along with visual instructions to place the pre-connected defibrillation pads onto the patient. The AED will be located in an AED-identified mounted cabinet at a designated area at each location listed below.

• Administration Building – Suite 150.

• Trustee Chambers – Suite 180.

• Public Works Service Garage.

• Kingswood Park – Located on the restroom under the Pavilion, accessible by the Farmers Market.

• Schappacher Park – Located on the restroom building and supply signs at the dog park indicating the location.

• Fleckenstein Park - Located on the restroom near the baseball fields.

• Snyder House (Inside)- Located on the wall near the front entrance to the building.

•  Activity Center – Located on the wall inside the building by the restrooms.

•  Carter Park – Located on the Black Barn facing King Avenue.

Warren County Imagination Library

Two of every three Warren County children ages birth to 5 have enrolled in Imagination Library. Over 250,000 quality Dolly Parton Imagination Library books have been sent to homes in every corner of life. But what happens to those books that the post offices cannot forward to changed addresses?

Jennifer Landry, Director’s Assistant of Warren County Foundation, has taken it upon herself to see that undeliverable books get into the hands of children. She made contact with all 12 of the county post offices and 70% of them committed to saving IL books. Tina, a post office floater, checks for undeliverable books in various post offices, and sets them aside for Jennifer to pick up each month or so. As of spring 2023, Jennifer has rescued 547 books! Her goal is to gather 1,000.

Recipients of the retrieved books have been Warren County Health District - who donate them to children they service and expectant mothers, WCCS Early Learning Centers, Countryside YMCA Early Learning Centers, Safe On Main and Family Promise. There is no shortage of nonprofits who can use these books! Thanks to Jennifer and Tina, more children have their own libraries.

As Larry Hollingshead, WCIL advocate states: 5 county libraries, Warren County Foundation, 5 local governments, 8 school systems, 125 volunteers, 3 dozen funding partners are all “working hard and we are working together to promote early childhood reading”… Where Every Child Reads Everyday!

Preparing for City Leaf Collection

The City of Mason provides free curbside leaf collection for property owners in the City. Preparation for leaf collection season begins in September each year. City staff begin converting vehicles that are used for a variety of tasks throughout the summer months with the equipment needed for leaf removal operations. Annual leaf collection occurs mid-October through mid-December.

During leaf collection, City staff posts temporary signs at the entrance to neighborhoods/streets at least two days prior to leaf collection to allow residents the time to rake leaves to the curb. Leaves left in roadways can clog storm drains often causing street flooding during heavy rains. In order to avoid street flooding and to keep neighborhood roads safe, residents are encouraged to assist in the leaf collection process by raking leaves to the curb, but not into the street.

Leaves collected are recycled with the assistance of local mulch companies into useable compost, reducing the demand on our solid waste landfills and reducing residents waste collection fees.

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN HELP THE CITY DURING LEAF COLLECTION SEASON:

• Rake leaves as close to the curb as possible and cover them with some type of tarp.

• Do not rake leaves into the street or storm sewers; leaves clogging the storm sewers can cause flooding during heavy rains.

• Do not rake twigs, branches, sticks, rocks, bottles, garden debris, pumpkins, etc., in with the leaves; these items can clog up the machine and cause considerable delay to the leaf collection.

• Avoid parking near leaf piles. Piles blocked by vehicles will not be picked up as it is difficult for the truck and leaf machine to maneuver around parked cars.

• If possible, please place leaf piles at least 40 feet from obstacles on each side.

Please keep in mind, an early season snow event can disrupt leaf removal operations. Trucks used for leaf removal operations need to be converted for snow/ice removal. While a few vehicles are allocated for both services, staff must monitor weather conditions and evaluate the timing, strength and length of a snow/ice storm and convert additional trucks accordingly. This can become challenging when weather conditions change rather quickly. If the snow/ice storm dissipates or weakens and trucks have been converted, staff must then begin the task of converting vehicles back for leaf removal operations.

Golf Etiquette and Dress Code: Your Guide to Enjoying Golf at The Grizzly Golf and Social Lodge

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the ins and outs of golf etiquette or unsure about what to wear on the green, don’t fret! At The Grizzly, we believe that golf should be accessible and enjoyable for everyone, no matter your background or skill level.

That’s why we’ve put together this friendly guide to help you understand the basics of golf etiquette and dress code, so you can focus on what really matters: having fun and loving the game.

GOLF ETIQUETTE

Here are a few key etiquette rules that help us maintain this friendly atmosphere:

1. Respect for Others: Respect for others is especially crucial in shared spaces like our golf course as it demonstrates that we acknowledge the perspectives of others while fostering a culture of play. In golf, this takes the form of maintaining a quiet demeanor while others are preparing to swing, being mindful of pace of play, and treating all players kindly. Respect creates a positive atmosphere where everyone can enjoy the game and feel welcomed. It’s not just about being polite; it’s about building a community that enhances our shared love for the game.

2. Pace of Play: To keep the game enjoyable for everyone, we ask golfers to following the Golf Ready guidelines which recommend maintaining an average of 15 minutes per hole (or total round of 4.5 hours). If a group falls behind, our Rangers will ask groups to close the gap by speeding up or even skipping a hole. If the gap widens to two or more holes, the group will be asked to adjust their position on the course to get back on track. However, if a group continues to lag, they may be asked to end their game for the day, but rest assured, they’ll receive a rain check for the unfinished part of their round.

3. Play Ready Golf: Ready Golf means all golfers should go to their balls as soon as possible and get ready to play their shot. While waiting to hit, players should survey the shot, select their clubs, and stand ready to make the shot when it’s their turn. Ready Golf applies everywhere – on tees, fairways, and on the greens.

4. Course Care: Part of loving the game is caring for the course. Please replace divots, smooth out bunkers after playing from them, and repair any pitch marks on the green. Your attention to these details helps maintain the quality and beauty of our course, ensuring a great golfing experience for everyone.

DRESS CODE

While we’re all about breaking down barriers to golf, we uphold a dress code that respects the game while ensuring comfort and functionality for our players. When playing on the course or using the practice facilities golfers must wear proper golf attire.

Here are a few guidelines when it comes to dressing for the course:

5. Tops: Shirts must be worn at all times: for men, shirts with sleeves and collars are recommended, while ladies can opt for sleeveless and/or collared shirts. Tank tops, tee shirts, tube tops, halter tops, and mesh shirts are not permitted.

6. Bottoms: Slacks, skirts, skorts, or mid-length shorts are permitted. We kindly ask that our guests avoid wearing swimming attire, jeans, cutoffs, and gym shorts.

7. Footwear: Proper footwear is important for both safety and course preservation. We recommend golf shoes with soft spikes or sneakers with a good grip. Any shoes that are harmful to the course or present a safety concern are not permitted including metal spikes, high heels, flip flops, etc.

8. Weather-Ready: Be prepared for changing weather conditions. Consider wearing layers, bringing sunscreen, and wearing rain gear or a sun hat depending on the forecast.

Remember, golf at The Grizzly is all about accessibility and fun. Don’t let concerns about etiquette or dress code keep you from enjoying the game. And remember, if you’re in need of some great golf apparel we have great brands for men and women available in our Pro Shop. We’re here to support you, cheer you on, and share our love for this incredible sport. See you on the course!

100 WHO CARE

GATHER. VOTE. GIVE. It really is that simple! Are you are looking for a way to give back to your local community? Join 100+ Who Care of Warren County! Together, the members of this giving circle have donated over $40,000 to local nonprofit organizations.

100+ Who Care of Warren County is a giving circle dedicated to making life better for all Warren County residents through a quarterly donation to a Warren County non-profit organization ($100/adult, $25/student), and our online giving platform on Grapevine makes it easy!

Two or three local charities give a five minute presentation each quarter. Members who are present (in-person and online) vote, and one is selected to receive the donation for that quarter. Organizations up for consideration must serve Warren County and are nominated by group members; the idea is to keep it local and provide an impact we can see. Our Second Quarter award was to the Aubrey Rose Foundation – an organization that helps families caring for children with life-threatening illnesses by focusing on the family unit by providing emotional and financial support.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE. IT’S. THAT. SIMPLE.

Adaptive Ballfields at Makino Park

Makino Park includes Common Ground Playground and FCC Field, which are designed for children and adults of all ages and abilities to partake in an opportunity to play and interact together. The park quickly became a regional destination, generating excitement and anticipation for future phases of the inclusive park.

After years of fundraising efforts, the newest all-inclusive addition to Makino Park is becoming a reality. Construction of the two youth all-inclusive ballfields, specifically designed for individuals with developmental and physical challenges, is scheduled to begin this fall. Field attributes include synthetic turf material, an underlayment pad, and turf infill which are engineered to increase wheelchair & walker mobility compared to a traditional field. Additionally, fields will be equipped with widened dugouts, ADA accessible drop-off locations, enclosed fields, and adaptive equipment. Completion of the ballfields is anticipated to be late spring of 2024, just in time for the Mason Challenger League season. The ballfields will host many of the league’s practices and home games and will be available for use on a first come first serve basis for individuals of all ages and abilities.

Featured on the cover are Mason Challenger League Board President Susan Murdock and Mason Challenger League player Sydney Roderer. Sydney is an original Challenger player and has been with the league all 11 years. She now plays in the Senior League for athletes that are 16 years and older and is a fantastic spokesperson for the league.

Thank you to the Mason community, stakeholders, and business partners for your continued support of Makino Park and the impact it has on the quality of life for Mason residents and tri-state visitors.

WILLIAM MASON HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2023

Lots of pomp and circumstance, a resounding “Go Mason Comets” cheer led by Superintendent Dr. Jonathan Cooper, on-stage push ups by class-nominated faculty speaker Steve Prescott, a .5 class officer selfie, and the glorious Cintas Center confetti cannons ensured that the 841 members of the William Mason High School Class of 2023’s commencement ceremony held on a Sunday, May 28 was a memorable Mason Moment.

From California to Germany, see where the class of 2023 is headed this fall.

Ninety-percent of the graduating class is pursuing a secondary education at either a four-year or two-year school. Of the remaining graduates, 0.50%, are pursuing career education or joining the military. Additionally, 4% of the graduates are entering the workforce, and 2% are exploring other paths or took a year off. A remaining 1% of the class remains undecided.
