A DRAMATIC REBIRTH HAS TRANSFORMED CINCINNATI USA’S DOWNTOWN CORE, AND THE CITY IS MORE DESIRABLE THAN EVER.

T

he ongoing renaissance in downtown Cincinnati USA has been widely reported, receiving dozens of national accolades over nearly 15 years. What is perhaps less understood is the breadth and cultural diversity of that downtown rebirth. It creatively mixes the charms of a historic city legacy with the feel of a trendy and progressive urban core that is vibrant, entrepreneur-friendly and delightfully playful. What has added up to $1.4 billion in downtown redevelopment and infrastructure investments began in 2003 with new stadiums for the Bengals and Reds, lining the river at the city’s “front door,” along with the refurbishing of the Duke Energy Convention Center and the redesign of Fountain Square. The impetus continued in 2010 with the development of two entertainment districts: The Banks, a mixed-use development along the riverfront, and the makeover of historic Over-the-Rhine, on downtown’s northern edge, as a destination for microbreweries,

bars, boutique shops and cuttingedge eateries (while preserving the neighborhood’s essential character as a cultural, historic and architectural treasure). The exciting growth has also included an explosion in hotel rooms, redesigned urban parks, affordable housing and condos, and now a new streetcar loop running from historic Over-theRhine to the revamped riverfront that connects these cultural and development dots. 800.543.2613 and CincyUSA.com

YOU CAN WALK IT ALL The central downtown is compact, making for one of the most accessible and friendly walks in any Midwestern city. In a 10-minute stroll from the Duke Energy Convention Center and center city, you will find a diversity of entertainment, cultural and meeting choices rarely found in similar cities. That includes more than 3,200 hotel rooms in a three-block walk from the conven-

tion center, along with more than 80 eateries and 200 shops. Heading north from the central downtown leads to Gateway Quarter in Over-the-Rhine, one of the region’s historically rich neighborhoods, now loaded with intriguing shops, restaurants and microbreweries. Heading south, one can soak up The Banks, the riverfront development, along with Smale Riverfront Park, which features bike 2017 Destination Planning Guide | 5

GUEST ROOMS IN ABUNDANCE Six new hotels have opened since 2011 in the downtown core, bringing the total to nearly 3,500 rooms, and more projects are on the way. MEETING PLANNER TOOLBOX 2017

GET A GLIMPSE OF

CINCINNATI USA

THE CINCINNATI USA CVB HAS LAUNCHED A VIRTUAL REALITY PLATFORM FOR MEETING PLANNERS WHO WANT TO GET UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH THE BEST THE CITY HAS TO OFFER.

H

ave you ever wanted to see what Cincinnati USA is all about? The CVB has developed a 360-degree virtual reality experience to give you a first-hand look at the city. At CincyUSA.com/VR, meeting planners can navigate through the city on a typical day at some of the most iconic landmarks and venues to help them plan an event. The platform includes spots like Fountain Square, the Contemporary Arts Center, a streetcar stop, Vine Street in Overthe-Rhine, Smale Riverfront Park, National Underground Railroad 800.543.2613 and CincyUSA.com

Freedom Center, Washington Park and plenty of other sites that make Cincinnati unique. “The goal is to place a meeting planner all around the city,” says Tyler Minton, Digital Marketing Communications Coordinator, “and to tap into some of the emotions that we want their attendees to feel while they are here.” From the food and craft beer scene at Taft’s Ale House to a stop on the streetcar route, seeing the culture in Cincinnati USA remotely has never been so clear. The voiceover acts as a guide while users scope out the popular

destinations, imagining their event at various venues and learning how Cincinnati stands apart from other similar cities. When using the platform, Minton encourages users to view the experience on a mobile device rather than a desktop or laptop because you can move around, spin, and look up and down. The CVB currently shows the experience with a headset at trade shows, however in the future Minton expects to make it accessible by providing Google Cardboard headsets for an even clearer experience. 2017 Destination Planning Guide | 27
