winery did. I did everything: crushing grapes, shoveling tanks, driving forkli s, loading trucks, ﬁ xing equipment. It was a well-rounded education.

Did you know much about wine before taking the job? No, not at all. Andre Tchelistcheﬀ [known as the Dean of American winemakers] was brought onboard at Simi as a consultant. He started me tasting and shared trade secrets. He also got me out into the vineyard, and I learned that it wasn’t all about what happened in the winery, but started with growing superior grapes.

How do you know when to harvest grapes? Taste is key, but it’s a lot of things. The biggest thing is ﬁnding the sweet spots in the vineyard. Each vineyard has certain areas that are just blessed because of location, soil, moisture content, and orientation to the sun.

How do you ﬁnd the sweet spot in a vineyard?

For threeand-a-half decades under his guidance, RS consistently has produced world-class wines. His secret: a passion for winemaking that blends innovation with Old World techniques.

What drew you to winemaking in the first place? I’m not your typical winemaker in that I didn’t go to college for it. I studied chemistry, minored in forestry and life science. I got a seasonal job as a firefighter with the California Division of Forestry. When the rains came, I was let go. There was a lumber mill north of town with Simi winery next to it. The lumber mill didn’t hire me but the

It starts with aerial maps of the vineyards with imaging that tells us our high vigor [vine density] and low vigor areas. That doesn’t tell us which are the best areas, but it does tell us which areas are different from others. We keep grapes separate from different areas so we can trace the wine right back to the specific areas where grapes were grown when we start tasting.

How important are the barrels to the winemaking process? A lot of people are trying to make wine today without barrels, but it’s just not the same. If you want to make good wine, you have to do it the slow, oldfashioned way and use oak barrels. Our best collectible, high-end wines are made with French oak barrels.

Any advice for a first-timer to the Grand Tasting? It’s a great place to taste the big, famous wines you can’t normally afford. Of course, you should find wines you can afford and try them, too. Don’t forget, you’re there to have fun, so taste a lot of wines but try not to swallow too much.

very year, all participating wineries are offered the chance to submit their wines to be judged. This is the Olympics of the wine industry—enter your best wines in hopes of achieving recognition for outstanding effort in the form of Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals. Prior to the Grand Tastings, more than 400 wines are swirled, sniffed, sipped, and evaluated by trained judges. They include wine educators, culinary professionals, restaurateurs, wine retailers, certified sommeliers, wine salespeople, and industry advocates. Our judges are commi ed to the integrity of the wine industry and competition, and a end a training program prior to the competition. Each wine is tasted using a modified blind format, which means that the type of grape and where it’s grown is revealed, but not the winery, wine name, or vintage. The judges use a 20-point grading scale to rate each wine on five major categories: Appearance, Aroma & Bouquet, Taste & Texture, Finish & A ertaste, and Overall Impression. The behind-the-scenes staff works diligently to ensure the wines are presented to the judges in the most professional manner. The Riedel glassware is washed and hand-polished a er each use. If any judge deems that a wine has “off ” aromas, another bo le is opened without question. The scoring sheets are collected, tabulated, and double-checked by an independent third party. The results are returned to the Wine Festival, and the medals are awarded. The Wine Festival competition is recognized nationally and is considered one of the premier wine events in the country. These rules are established to ensure absolute credible results, and the Wine Festival board and staff are commi ed to enforcing the rules to maintain the highest professional standards for the competition.
