THE STORY

ACT I While at a party at his palace, the Duke of Mantua expresses his desire for an assignation with a young woman he has recently seen at church, but soon afterward he sets his romantic sights on seducing Countess Ceprano. As the Duke and the Countess leave together, her husband is mocked and humiliated by Rigoletto, the Duke’s jester. Pondering revenge on Rigoletto, Count Ceprano is interested to learn from the nobleman Marullo that Rigoletto keeps a woman in his home. The elderly nobleman Count Monterone interrupts the party to defend the honor of his daughter, who has been ravished by the Duke. Rigoletto mocks Monterone’s anger, and the enraged father responds by cursing the Duke and his jester. Outside the palace later that night, the assassin Sparafucile confronts Rigoletto. Rigoletto sends him away but compares his own biting tongue to an assassin’s sword. When he arrives home, he is greeted by his daughter Gilda, whom he has kept secluded since the death of her mother. Rigoletto leaves Gilda in the care of her maid, Giovanna. Soon afterward, the Duke, disguised as a student, sneaks into the house and tells Gilda that he loves her. Gilda, who has noticed the disguised Duke following her home from church, returns his affections, and they bid each other farewell. Outside, Ceprano and a group of the Duke’s courtiers are gathering to abduct Gilda—whom they believe to be Rigoletto’s mistress—in order to gain revenge on the jester. The courtiers blindfold Rigoletto and fool him into letting them into his house. They depart with Gilda. Rigoletto hears her cries and removes the blindfold, but he is too late to save her, and he is left alone to remember Monterone’s curse.

ACT II Having discovered that Gilda is missing, the Duke laments losing her. However, he soon learns that she was abducted his own courtiers, and he excitedly leaves to see her. Rigoletto enters, searching for Gilda, but he is turned away by the unconcerned courtiers. Gilda enters and tearfully tells her father about her flirtation with the Duke and her abduction. As Rigoletto consoles his daughter, he watches as Monterone is led toward his prison cell. Rigoletto swears to Monterone that the Duke’s crimes against both of their daughters will be avenged. ACT III Rigoletto brings Gilda to the home of the assassin Sparafucile, whom he has hired to kill the Duke. Gilda is forced to watch from outside as the Duke, no longer disguised as her lover, seduces Maddalena, the assassin’s sister. After sending Gilda away, Rigoletto finalizes his arrangements with Sparafucile; he will return at midnight to accept the body and dispose of it. Against her father’s wishes, Gilda returns and listens as Maddalena begs her brother not to kill the Duke. Sparafucile initially refuses, but he relents and tells his sister that he will kill whoever arrives at the inn before Rigoletto returns. Gilda decides to allow herself be killed in place of her lover, knocks on the door, and is stabbed by Sparafucile. Rigoletto returns at midnight and is presented with a body in a sack. As he leaves, he hears the voice of the Duke singing in the distance. He opens the bag to find the dying body of his daughter. She dies in the arms of her father, who cries that Monterone’s curse has been fulfilled.

Rigoletto is a study of contrasts. The source material, Victor Hugo’s 1832 play Le roi s’amuse (The King Amuses Himself), is, in true Hugo fashion, a subtly pointed critique of the abuse of power. The original play was so pointed it was banned for several decades after opening night. Verdi and his librettist, Francesco Maria Piave, had to deal with Austrian censors who saw their plot as inappropriate for the operatic stage. Verdi and Piave changed the character of the King of France to the nondescript Duke of Mantua and the jester Triboulet to Rigoletto. But they kept the moral tension and tragic consequences of revenge at the heart of the work, which was rapturously received at its premiere in 1851. Rigoletto is also deceptively entertaining, bringing the tension of the source material into the very

essence of the work and how audiences respond to it. Two of the most memorable opera arias ever, “La donna è mobile” and “Questa o quella,” are light and melodically catchy—sung by a character who routinely seduces and rapes women. Our protagonist, Rigoletto, is the Duke’s jester—and becomes the victim of the cruelest joke. As the Duke’s personal cheerleader, he mocks and teases the husbands, fathers, and relatives of the Duke’s victims. Yet he does whatever he can to keep his daughter, Gilda, from the Duke’s reach. Such an act shows that perhaps his cruelty is more act than essence; how to speak against the person who helps you maintain your quality of life? And yet in his desire to protect, he leaves Gilda unguarded. She is not allowed outside the home except to attend church, always chaperoned by a nurse. At no point, does he sit her down and prepare her— to spot liars, to defend herself against predators, or to be wary of strangers. It is at church that she meets who she thinks is a poor student—actually the Duke in disguise. She has no knowledge of her father’s profession, not even his name; and so when she learns her father is the court jester and her father learns she has slept with the Duke, it is one of several cruel jokes that occurs and hints to the ultimate tragedy to come. The Duke, used to moving through the world with no consequences and getting what he wants, gets no comeuppance: there is no descent into hell like Don Giovanni or Faust, nor a triumphant mob of disgruntled courtiers carrying him off stage. He is completely unaware of Rigoletto’s plot to assassinate him. The disconnect between awareness and consequences heightens the disparity between the Duke and Rigoletto: one gets off scot-free, the other fails in his plan of righteous revenge, in part because his daughter chooses to sacrifice her life for a man that she sees as her true love. And so, amidst the cheery, earwormy tunes of this popular opera lies a series of moral conundrums and frustrations. Is this a commentary on the limits of revenge? That one’s moral compass should never be compromised or that it can never be without stain? That this world is not suited for those pure and good? That is for you to decide.

THE STORY

ACT I Rome, 1800. Angelotti, a political prisoner, has escaped from Castel Sant’Angelo and takes cover in the Church of Sant’Andrea della Valle where his sister, the Marchesa d’Attavanti, has left him the key to the family chapel. He is discovered by the painter Mario Cavaradossi, a liberal sympathizer, who is painting an altarpiece. His portrait of Mary Magdalene is inspired by the Marchesa, whom he has observed in prayer. When the singer Floria Tosca, Cavaradossi’s lover, arrives, she recognizes the blue-eyed Magdalena as none other than the Marchesa herself. Tosca jealously insists that the figure be made to look more like her dark-eyed self and leaves the church. Soon after, a cannon shot from the prison announces Angelotti’s escape, and Cavaradossi hurries him away to hide in his country villa. The Sacristan tells the choir of the reported defeat of Napoleon at Marengo, to be celebrated with a High Mass. Their jubilation is interrupted by Scarpia, the feared chief of police, who arrives with his men to search for Angelotti. Scarpia finds a fan with the Attavanti crest, part of a disguise left for Angelotti, as Tosca returns to tell Cavaradossi that she will sing for the Queen that night at the Palazzo Farnese. Scarpia uses her jealousy to sow seeds of doubt about her lover and the Marchesa; as Iago used a handkerchief to manipulate Othello, he will trap Tosca with the Marchesa’s fan. ACT II Scarpia desires Tosca and hopes to use the arrest of her lover to force her to his will. As he dines in his room, he hears Tosca’s voice rising from the

celebrations below. Spoletta arrives from Cavaradossi’s villa, having failed to find the escaped Angelotti. He has, however, arrested Cavaradossi and brings him before Scarpia. Tosca, having been to the villa as well, knows that Scarpia was lying about Cavaradossi’s infidelity. She also knows the hiding place of Angelotti, which she reveals when Cavaradossi screams under torture. Scarpia proposes a bargain to Tosca: If she will yield to him, he will spare Cavaradossi and give them both safe conduct out of Rome. But, for political reasons, he first must hold a mock execution. Tosca agrees, and as Scarpia prepares to collect his reward, she offers him a deadly surprise. ACT III At the battlements of Castel Sant’Angelo overlooking the Tiber, Cavaradossi, awaiting execution, recalls his first night with Tosca—when the stars shone just as they do now. Tosca arrives with the safe-conduct and describes how she obtained it. A carriage is waiting, and she has brought money and her jewels. She explains that Cavaradossi will have to feign death at the hands of a mock firing squad and coaches his acting. The firing squad, however, is real; Scarpia has worked his evil from beyond the grave. Pursued by Scarpia’s minions, who have discovered her deed, Tosca calls on her tormentor to meet her before the Throne of God and leaps to her death.

Villain loves Woman. Woman loves Good Guy instead. Villain makes drastic attempts to win Woman. Most characters die by the end. We know this story. So why does Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca keep us in a stranglehold 125 years after its premiere—and what can we still learn from it? Often, the art that moves us most manages to balance this familiarity (classic stories, archetypal characters, timeless concerns) with a singular uniqueness (Puccini’s music, a talented cast bringing it to life on stage). We return again and again to witness as the story plays out, and ideally to discover something new each time. In an authoritarian Rome, our villain Baron Scarpia polices the streets from the shadows. He has long been obsessed with our heroine, Floria Tosca, and when her love—the artist Cavaradossi—gets caught attempting to free a political prisoner, Scarpia uses Cavaradossi’s arrest as a bargaining chip to get what he really wants: Tosca. However, while simple descriptions such as these tend to reduce Tosca to the role of victim or even pawn, there is much more to discover. When the opera opens, we meet Tosca in a state of jealousy—in fact, it is only because she is pursuing this jealousy that she discovers Cavaradossi’s secret agenda and becomes embroiled in the political chess match in the first place. Act II puts Tosca under enough pressure to break most people: Scarpia tortures Cavaradossi until she gives up her information, then threatens to execute him unless she gives herself over. She agrees—what else can she do, in the moment?—but after securing Cavaradossi’s freedom along with her own, she wrenches back her agency

in the form of a knife and kills Scarpia. The final act finds Tosca betrayed yet again: Scarpia has tricked her by secretly ordering Cavaradossi to be executed, and she is to be arrested. Rather than lose her freedom once more, Tosca leaps from the castle walls to end her life. A coward’s way out, or a final act of agency? Once arrested, Tosca would have been put to death—not only for her role in freeing a political prisoner, but now also for the murder of her blackmailer and rapist. Tosca is left with one final way to take control of her own life, one ultimate choice that is hers and hers alone. She makes that choice. To return to our original question, why do we continue to revist familiar stories, even when we know how they end? Perhaps partly to explore the ways that stories fail to change—in 2025, themes of political machinations, sexual assault, and violence against women are as relevant as ever. But perhaps we also return to these predictable stories to understand how we are changing, such as the subtle ways we discover strength and agency in a character who is given few choices and yet refuses to completely forfeit her power. Sopranos have sung the sumptuous role of Floria Tosca for 125 years, but what we hear, and what we believe Tosca is telling us, continues to evolve.

THE STORY

ACT I Tevye insists that without tradition and devotion to God in the village of Anatevka, life would be “as shaky as a fiddler on the roof.” Three of Tevye’s daughters—Tzeitel, Hodel, and Chava—wonder if the matchmaker will find them the men of their dreams. The matchmaker, Yente, tells Golde she has selected the butcher, Lazar Wolf, as a match for Tzeitel. Tevye, a milkman, reflects on how much he wishes he had a small fortune. A group of villagers, including a revolutionary student named Perchik, approaches him with news of a violent pogrom in a nearby village. Tevye invites Perchik to Sabbath dinner and arranges for him to instruct his daughters. Motel, the timid tailor, tries to ask Tevye for Tzeitel’s hand but gets tongue-tied. The family welcomes the Sabbath. The next evening, Tevye meets with Lazar Wolf and agrees to the match. A boisterous celebration follows. On his way home, Tevye meets the Constable, who warns of a planned demonstration against the Jews of Anatevka. Tevye, inebriated, conjures The Fiddler, who plays as Tevye dances home. Tevye tells Tzeitel she is to marry Lazar Wolf. Golde rejoices, but Motel soon tells Tevye that he and Tzeitel gave each other a pledge to marry. After internal struggle, Tevye agrees and manufactures a wild nightmare to convince Golde that the match with Lazar will lead to Tzeitel’s death at the hands of Lazar’s first wife, Fruma-Sarah. Villagers gossip about the change in Tzeitel’s wedding plans. On the street, Russians taunt Chava. Fyedka, a young Russian, insists they stop. Afterward, he follows Chava into Motel’s shop to try to speak with her, and he manages to share a book with her before Motel enters. The villagers attend Tzeitel and Motel’s wedding. Perchik asks Hodel to dance, and she accepts—a forbidden act. Everyone joins in. The Constable and his men suddenly enter and destroy everything in sight.

Perchik is struck with a club. The Constable apologizes to Tevye. The family begins to clean up. ACT II Tevye chats with God about recent events. Perchik tells Hodel he’s leaving to work for justice in Kiev. He proposes, she accepts, and he promises to send for her. Tevye reluctantly approves. Yente tells Tzeitel she’s seen Chava with Fyedka. News from Perchik’s letter becomes gossip among the villagers. Tevye brings Hodel to the railroad station. She is going to Siberia, where Perchik is being held after his arrest. Villagers gossip about Motel and Tzeitel’s new sewing machine. Chava promises Fyedka she’ll speak to Tevye about their love. Tevye refuses to listen and forbids her to speak of Fyedka again. Golde tells Tevye that Chava and Fyedka are married. Tevye declares that Chava is dead to them. When she appears to ask his acceptance, he cannot answer. Yente tries to arrange matches for Tevye’s remaining daughters. The Constable arrives and announces that everyone must leave Anatevka in three days. Heartbroken, the villagers sing fondly of their home. The family prepares to leave. Tzeitel and Motel are going to Warsaw. Hodel and Perchik are still in Siberia. Chava and Fyedka are leaving for Krakow. Tevye refuses to acknowledge them, but when Tzeitel says goodbye, he prompts her to add, “God be with you!” The villagers share their final goodbyes. As they leave, Tevye beckons to The Fiddler to follow.

ove, grief, jealousy, hope. Opera is the ideal art form to communicate all sides of the human experience. That belief is at the heart of Cincinnati Opera’s Black Opera Project. This sweeping new initiative brings together visionary artists to create three powerful new operas celebrating the resilience, richness, and joy of the Black American experience. The first of these works, Lalovavi, will take center stage at Music Hall in summer 2026. It will be followed by two more world premieres, one each year through 2028. But this initiative is about more than new productions—it’s a bold statement of representation and a celebration of voice, tradition, and imagination. Lalovavi (LAH-low-VAH-vee) is an Afrofuturist opera set in the year 2425 in which love plays a central role—love of self, love of family, and love of community. In fact, the word “lalovavi” translates to “love.” The opera’s story takes place centuries after environmental collapse. Society is governed by those who carry a rare genetic trait known as the Syndica gene. Persephone, daughter of a powerful leader, discovers she carries a unique version of the gene—one believed to grant immortality. When her father threatens her freedom, she flees the city and embarks on a journey of self-discovery, encountering warrior-healers, talking beasts, and ancient spiritual traditions rooted in Black culture. The creation of Lalovavi has been a multi-year, layered journey—one that began with the original story created by librettist and poet Tifara Brown that draws on classic motifs and archetypes and el-

evates them in a way that is both fresh and profound. Brown, composer Kevin Day, stage director and dramaturg Kimille Howard, and Cincinnati Opera staff have worked together to refine this vision into an inspiring narrative that embraces themes of transformation, identity, and liberation. Completing the creative team are conductor Kevin Miller, scenic designer Lawrence E. Moten III, costume designer Kara Harmon, and lighting designer Thomas C. Hase, who are collaborating with Brown, Day, and Howard to bring the opera to vibrant life for the Music Hall stage. Following two successful developmental workshops, the team’s creative momentum continues with exciting energy and promises to shape Lalovavi into a bold new entry into the opera world. Through Lalovavi and The Black Opera Project, Cincinnati Opera is filling a long-standing gap in the repertoire as it sets an example for how powerful, inclusive, and profoundly human opera can be. In lifting up new voices and new stories, Lalovavi and The Black Opera Project will inspire upcoming generations, reach national stages, and help redefine the future of American opera, while honoring a legacy of culture, courage, and creativity. incinnati Opera is proud to share that Opera Fusion: New Works (OF:NW)—one of the nation’s leading incubators for new operas—will continue for three more years, thanks to a generous anonymous gift. This donation ensures the continuation of the company’s groundbreaking collaboration with the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), extending the life of an initiative that has become a vital force in the development of American opera. Since its launch in 2011, OF:NW has offered composers and librettists the opportunity to workshop operas-in-progress using the talents and resources of both Cincinnati Opera and CCM. Most recently led by co-Artistic Directors Robin Guarino, professor of opera at CCM, and Evans Mirageas, Cincinnati Opera’s Harry T. Wilks Artistic Director, OF:NW has hosted 35 workshops and orchestral readings for 29 operas—many of which have gone on to be produced on major stages across the country. Acclaimed works such as Fellow Travelers by Gregory Spears and Greg Pierce, Eurydice by Matthew Aucoin and Sarah Ruhl, and Champion by Terence Blanchard and Michael Cristofer all passed through OF:NW on their way to Lyric Opera of Chicago, Los Angeles Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera. More recently, two pieces workshopped by OF:NW—Blind Injustice by Scott Davenport Richards and David Cote, and Morgiane, a rediscovered 1887 work by Edmund Dédé believed be the oldest existing opera by a Black American—received their New York City premieres to enthusiastic audience and critical acclaim. Originally supported by the Mellon Foundation, whose funding concludes in 2025, OF:NW enters a new chapter thanks to the generous new gift. Following Guarino’s recent retirement, OF:NW will host six additional workshops over the next three

years under the leadership of Mirageas and Cincinnati Opera artistic team members Jane Hulburt and Audrey Chait, in partnership with CCM—providing valuable time and space for new stories to be developed and new voices to be heard. “Opera Fusion: New Works has been transformative for Cincinnati Opera, CCM, and opera in America,” said Mirageas. “This generous gift will allow this unique creative collaboration to continue to thrive, giving composers and librettists valuable resources to shape their stories and ensuring the vibrancy of the art form for decades to come.” To learn more, visit ofnw.org.
