Dear partner colleague, It’s a very great pleasure to introduce this CIMSPA partnership newsletter – looking back over recent months of a hugely important year for the sector and all those who work within it. Since the last partner newsletter CIMSPA has: nn Secured Sport England investment that will accelerate CIMSPA’s work to improve the careers of those working in sport and physical activity nn Launched the CIMSPA Professional Standards Matrix that will facilitate the creation of these career pathways. nn Appointed a new chair with the experience and wealth of skills to connect CIMSPA with those who can help our work, at the highest level.

We have a hard-working staff team here at CIMSPA, a passionate board of trustees and many members who contribute their time and expertise. But, our significant progress in 2017 has, in reality, been driven by YOU – our partners.

Sport England’s investment decision was eased by the massive buy-in of sector employers and education specialists to our vision, and the DNA of every CIMSPA professional standard has employer expertise encoded within it.

Marc Woods appointed as CIMSPA chair

FUNDED PARTNER Sport England invests in CIMSPA to drive workforce improvement CIMSPA has received Sport England investment to transform delivery of sport and activity services across the sector.

C

IMSPA has appointed Marc Woods as its new chair. Marc Woods is a multiple Paralympic gold medallist, BBC commentator, author and conference speaker.

As CIMSPA chair, Marc will advocate for CIMSPA at the highest policy levels in the UK, to communicate the importance of a strong chartered professional body for the UK sport and physical activity sector.

Commenting on his appointment, Marc said: “I am delighted to be appointed as CIMSPA chair at an exciting time for the chartered institute, following the recent investment by Sport England.

“I'd like to thank the outgoing chair Andy Reed for all his hard work at CIMSPA, and look forward to building on the success achieved under the leadership of both CEO Tara Dillon and Andy Reed. This includes creating

a sustainable financial future for the organisation, strengthening its capabilities, delivering on the professional standards the sector has asked us for, and growing membership.”

Tara Dillon, CIMSPA CEO, added: “On behalf of CIMSPA, I would like to welcome Marc onboard as CIMSPA chair. As a chartered professional body it is vital that we have an experienced chair in place to help drive forward our agenda. He brings a wealth of experience and skills to the chartered institute and will help connect CIMSPA to policy makers at the highest level.

“It is an exciting time to be part of CIMSPA as we work to deliver the objectives set by both government and Sport England. I very much look forward to working with Marc in his new role.”

The Sport England investment and commitment of £1.2 million will enable CIMSPA to contribute to the workforce development goals of Sport England’s 2016 Towards an Active Nation strategy.

Over this period, the institute will also work closely with government to ensure apprenticeships are embedded into the workforce, develop professional membership pathways for new and emerging job roles, and represent the views of those working in a growing sport sector.

CIMSPA will also complete the sector’s professional standards matrix, create career pathways for individuals to enter and progress within the sector, and provide the industry with quality assured training.

CIMSPA working with the European Register of Exercise Professionals (EREPS)

ASA Awarding Body Teaching Swimming qualification first to be endorsed

T

he ASA Awarding Body has launched their new level 2 Swimming Teaching qualification which has received endorsement from CIMSPA. This is the first qualification to be endorsed against CIMSPA’s Swimming Teacher professional standard.

ASA Awarding Body Responsible Officer Simon Stevens added: “The creation of this qualification is a significant landmark in our sector.

The standard has been developed by awarding organisations, employers and training providers in partnership with CIMSPA.

Swim England CEO Jane Nickerson said: “We are excited about the launch of our new qualification which has been endorsed by CIMSPA against their new Swimming Teacher professional standard.

“We are pleased to have been able to respond quickly to the new standard, our existing qualifications have aligned themselves well and required minimal change to meet the industry standard.

“The ASA Awarding Body has played a key role alongside other key stakeholders including employers, in the creation of a professional standard which outlines the essential knowledge and skills to be a swimming teacher.”

“The accreditation shows that our qualification meets the needs of the employers and as such means holders of our new qualification will have the desired skills and knowledge needed to be a successful and competent swimming teacher”.

CIMSPA COMMENT

U

nder the agreement, European fitness professionals based in the UK will be able to use their EREPS accreditation to join the CIMSPA Exercise and Fitness Directory, which lists fitness professionals whose qualifications have been recognised by CIMSPA. EREPs will, in turn, recognise and accept the registration onto EREPS of any applicant registered on the CIMSPA Exercise and Fitness Directory, giving UK exercise and fitness professionals the freedom to work across the continent’s sport and physical activity marketplace.

Julian Berriman, the EuropeActive Director of the Professional Standards Committee, said: “We are delighted to have signed this agreement with CIMSPA and to benefit from the mutual recognition and support that this will provide. It is our central aim to professionalise the fitness sector across Europe, and the creation of this alliance is an important stepping stone in this process.”

CIMSPA will also act as the UK representative on pan-European fitness consultations convened by EREPS.

New CIMSPA Swimming Teacher professional standard cements GLL and STA partnership

GLL and STA have joined together in a new 3-year partnership that will see the charitable social enterprise – and now the UK’s largest operator of swimming pools – transform the way it delivers swimming teaching qualifications nationally.

he programme has been designed to enhance training opportunities and provide a progressive new aquatics career pathway for GLL’s 1,450 swimming teachers.

he leading lights in workforce development in the physical activity sector were toasted at the end of November as the winners of the coveted ukactive and CIMSPA Active Training Awards 2017 were unveiled.

Life Leisure came away with the most awards on the night, taking home Medium-Sized Employer of the Year as well as an individual gong as Danny Drayson from Life Leisure Grand Central scooped Outstanding Individual of the Year.

We have to celebrate those employers and training providers who are dedicated to developing it.

“The Active Training Awards offers an opportunity to celebrate those going above and beyond to develop world class workplaces.

“The onus is now on us to use the Active Training Conference and Awards as a springboard for rapid progress on the skills agenda in the next 12 months.”

ara Dillon, CIMSPA CEO, has been appointed to the Institute for Apprenticeships’ Health and Science Route Panel.

The Route Panels play a pivotal role in recommending whether an apprenticeship standard in development is ready for use – ensuring apprenticeships are fit for purpose for employers and learners alike.

Speaking about the announcement, Tara Dillon said: “I’m honoured to be taking up this appointment on behalf of the sector. This Route Panel sits at the most important decision point in approving apprenticeship standards and CIMSPA’s involvement here will ensure that apprenticeship standards continue to be employer-led and learner-focused – echoing the work of our wider skills improvement agenda.

CIMSPA 2017 Labour Market Intelligence Survey CIMSPA has launched its 2017/18 labour market intelligence project with two new surveys.

The first survey is targeted at all those working in UK sport, leisure, fitness and physical activity services. It includes questions covering age, gender, diversity and job role, as well as queries on training and career development. A separate survey is canvassing the views of sector employers on both the recruitment, training and retention challenges they face, and on the suitability of current training and qualifications available to meet these challenges.

The survey results will be analysed and published as the 2018 CIMSPA Labour Market Intelligence Report, and made available to the whole sector.

Speaking about the project launch, Tara Dillon, CIMSPA CEO said: “The insight we generate from these two surveys is hugely important for CIMSPA’s ambition to create better careers for those working in sport and physical activity.

“We’re asking everyone in sport and physical activity to share what they think about their training and their working life, and we’re reaching out to every employer in the sector for their input as well.

Sports & Leisure Forum confirms CIMSPA as official media partner

IMSPA is pleased to confirm a new partnership with Forum Events, which specialises in creating high-calibre events across a number of business sectors.

Under the agreement, CIMSPA is now an official Media Partner of the Sports & Leisure Forum, which takes place at the Radisson Blu Hotel, London Stansted, 18-19 June 2018.

Their focus is acute injury rehabilitation and performance optimisation.

BUCS join CIMSPA as employer partner CIMSPA and British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) have embarked upon a new partnership to ensure that UK students get the best sport and physical activity opportunities during their studies.

BUCS, whose members deliver more than 50 sports to almost 170 member institutions, at both FE and HE level, are now CIMSPA employer partners.

To open the partnership, the BUCS senior management team, as well as other key staff at their London HQ, will transfer into CIMSPA membership.

BUCS have also committed to encouraging their member institutions – who provide sports facilities to the majority of UK universities – to themselves join CIMSPA, to ensure their staff receive the best training and CPD on offer. By joining CIMSPA, BUCS member institutions will have a simple pathway to ensuring their staff teams’ professionalism and skills can be recognised by their sector’s chartered professional body.

Awarding organisation partners CIMSPA-recognised awarding bodies can now both adapt their qualifications to meet the new standards, and very soon will be able to create new qualifications from combinations of standards and population and environment specialisms.

Skills development partners Training provider partners will be able to offer endorsed training products based on these qualifications. They will also be able to create their own CIMSPA-endorsed CPD products from the standards.

Employer partners CIMSPA professional standards are all employer-led, from concept through to creation. This gives employers confidence that the standards meety our sector’s needs.

This is why employers are already trainsitioning to a landscape of only recognising CIMSPA-approved qualifications, and only buying training and CPD from CIMSPA skills development partners. Find out what’s on offer for your organisation at:

Sector apprenticeship standards update The process of developing and approving apprenticeships hasn’t moved forwards as quickly as sector employers and CIMSPA first hoped.

CIMSPA is continuing to lobby the Department for Education to ensure sport and physical activity is properly represented with reference to apprenticeship standards – Insitute for Apprenticeships representatives attended the recent CIMSPA professional development board meeting to look at how the sector can best be represented and work with government and its delivery bodies to ensure apprenticeships are a success within sport and physical activity.

HIGHER EDUCATION PARTNER UPDATE CIMSPA has continued to make progress in developing partnerships with higher education and the first cohort of HE institutions are now engaging with CIMSPA through a pilot programme.

The pilot will create a mechanism for degree programmes to be endorsed against CIMSPA professional standards, giving the sector and students the ability to understand what occupations and roles they will

be employable in upon completion of their degree.

In addition to developing the employability-focused endorsement and recognition pathways for sport and physical activity related degree programmes, the pilot will also develop relationships between employers, students and HE institutions and aims to enhance work placement, internship and graduate employment opportunities.
