INTRODUCTION TO INDONESIA
Indonesia, officially known as Republic of Indonesia, is a country located in Southeast Asia. Situated between the Indian and Pacific Ocean, it is the largest island country, with more than 17,000 islands. It has an estimated population of over 260 million people and it's the world's most populous Muslim majority country. The world's most populous island of Java contains more than half of the country's population.
According to the data from the Ministry of Health of Indonesia, there are 3217 hospitals around the country where most hospitals are in urban areas. Among these, 1225 of these hospitals are government owned and 1992 are private hospitals. According to the world bank data in 2012, there were 0.2 Physicians per 1000 people in Indonesia.
UNIVERSAL HEALTH COVERAGE IN INDONESIA
Healthcare provision in Indonesia has traditionally been fragmented, with private insurance provision for those able to pay for it alongside basic public coverage for the poorest in specialized areas providing services to those not covered by public or private schemes. In January 2014, the Indonesian government launched Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional (JKN), a scheme to implement universal health care in Indonesia. Under JKN, all Indonesians will receive coverage for a range of treatments via health services from public providers as well as those private organization that has opted to join the scheme. By 2025, JKN had already covered more than 279 million people in Indonesia, approximately 98.13% of the total population, ensuring access to free hospitalization services in basic (class-3) hospital beds across the country.
