WELCOME TO THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE OF TODAY’S BOAT!
U
nless you have been living under a rock for the last six months, you will be well aware that TheYachtMarket. com Southampton Boat Show takes place this month. There is a real buzz within the industry, and the 50th running of the show looks set to exceed the already high expectations. There’s so much going on at the event that it is impossible to cover it all, but in this issue, we have showcased a selection of highlights. Elsewhere in this issue we take a look at hybrid engine technology. This in-depth feature looks not only at some of the emerging technologies but also at how they are currently being utilised in different parts of the sector – and how they will in the future. What’s around the corner is also the topic of our design trends feature.

We caught up with several leading industry representatives to find out which trends we will see more of in the leisure boating arena. We have expert comment from ICOMIA and the YDBSA and two examples of innovators trying to rock the boat (sorry) with disruptive offers looking to change two very different but established parts of the industry. Finally, a request. Our aim for Today’s Boat is to develop the title to connect the leisure marine industry and encourage discussion and debate by getting behind the news. We want to share opinion, insights and thought-leadership that explores the opportunities and challenges facing the sector. To help us do that we’d love your feedback. If there are areas you’d like to see us cover, important topics you think should get greater coverage, or if you think you could contribute, please get in touch via email. My address is below. ARE YOU READY FOR METSTRADE?
T
he World’s largest trade exhibition for marine equipment, materials and systems, METSTRADE is once again creeping over the horizon. Taking place in Amsterdam from 13 to 15 November, the marine equipment trade show offers a great opportunity for the leisure marine equipment industry to come together to network and to find out more about the latest market innovations. This year the event will be opened by Hervé Gastinel, CEO at Groupe Beneteau at a breakfast briefing on 13 November, where he is expected to share his thoughts and experiences about innovation. The Breakfast Briefing will also feature the award ceremony for the worldfamous DAME – Design Award.
The event will also feature a dedicated I-nnovationLAB Stage. A stage on the exhibition floor hosts panel debates during the first two days of the event. This year the first discussion will focus on the health of oceans, rivers and lakes. Moderated by Albert Willemsen, an environmental consultant from ICOMIA. Another session will ask how genuine many of the green initiatives in the leisure marine industry really are, how much of a problem that is, and
whether there are ways to improve the situation. It will look at the real long-term benefits of sustainable measures in the industry and ways to quantifiably measure their lifecycle effect and total environmental impact. This will focus notably on the issue of ‘greenwashing’ – the risk that lip service is paid to environmental matters or that a minimum of reforms are carried out as a fig leaf for operations that continue to be unsustainable. www.metstrade.com
BIRTH OF A SUPERYACHT DECK EQUIPMENT COMPANY
I
ncreased demand for quality superyacht deck equipment has led the founders of Superyacht Tenders and Toys (SYTT), Josh and Claire Richardson, to launch a specialist deck hardware company Shipyard Supply Co (SSCo). Commenting on the launch, Josh said: “By launching Shipyard Supply Co we are meeting the rapid growth in the demand for deck hardware. The new business will operate as a separate entity, handling the manufacture and supply of everything from tender whips and fenders to custom stainless steel and carbon projects. This allows SSCo to go beyond the scope of SYTT products and form new relationships and distributorships within the industry.”
WWW.TODAYS-BOAT.COM | 01795 509111|
Day-to-day operations at SSCo will be overseen by Luke Porter, a former project manager at Oyster Yachts. Commenting on this new challenge, Luke said: “It’s an exciting time in the superyacht sector with increasing demand for bigger, better and more customised projects. As a former bosun on a superyacht I know how frustrating it can be spending time searching for quality products or

finding local suppliers to work on custom projects, so it makes perfect sense to have a one stop shop for all deck equipment. Our aim is to offer market leading products with unrivalled customer service so that the sourcing and buying process is as easy as possible for purchasing departments and yacht crew.” www.shipyardsupply.co

VHF RADIO CHECKS – DON’T CALL HMCG
T
he Cruising Association’s Regulations and Technical Services (RATS) Committee has been in discussion with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) about the use of VHF radio
check calls to HMCG on Channel 16 requesting radio checks. Robin Baron, a RATS spokesperson, said: “This is not best use of resources at a time when we know that they are hard pressed with more important issues, including search and rescue. The MCA has confirmed that radio checks should primarily be conducted with local marinas and nearby vessels. Radio checks with HMCG should not be a first resort as it ties up the air and increases operator workload.” Research undertaken by RATS
confirms that radio checks with other vessels or shore stations at 1W power and at a distance of around 8 miles provide a much better test of antenna and radio set performance. The recommendation is, therefore that radio checks should be carried out primarily with marinas and other shore stations or with other vessels. National Coastwatch Institute shore stations are usually well placed for such calls which should be made on Channel 65. www.theca.org.uk

HAYES PARSONS INSURANCE BROKERS ACQUIRES ADMIRAL YACHT INSURANCE
H
ayes Parsons Insurance Brokers has recently completed the acquisition of Admiral Marine Ltd which is the company behind the Admiral Yacht Insurance brand. Admiral Marine was created by Robert Holbrook in 1991 to offer a flexible insurance solution to meet the needs of both sailing yacht and motor yacht owners across the globe. Commenting on the announcement, James Woollam, managing
director of Hayes Parsons, said: “Following five years of sustained growth and our recent achievement of Chartered status, making an acquisition feels like the natural next step on our journey. We have been very fortunate in finding Robert Holbrook and his team at Admiral Yacht Insurance as the two companies complement each other fantastically well.” It will be business as usual at Admiral Yacht Insurance in Salisbury and Robert will continue to lead the existing team. Robert said: “I have been considering
options for Admiral Yacht Insurance for some time and my priority was to find a partner who shared the same values and to ensure that our clients would be in safe hands. Having worked with Hayes Parsons and James Woollam over the last few months I am excited for the future of the combined businesses”. www.hayesparsons.co.uk

aguar Vector Racing has broken the outright world and national electric speed records with its batterypowered boat the Jaguar Vector V20E. The powerboat was piloted by Peter Dredge, co-founder and technical director at Jaguar Vector and he achieved an average speed of 88.61mph across the two legs of the famous 1km course on Coniston Water. This breaks the previous electric world record of 76.8mph, which was set in 2008. The 295php electric powerboat was designed and constructed by Jaguar Vector in partnership with Jaguar Racing’s technical partner Williams Advanced Engineering, utilising Formula E electric car technology.
The team will be attempting further world and national records over the next 18 months as part of a initiative to push the boundaries of performance for electric motors and to showcase British engineering. Commenting after the successful record attempt, Malcolm Crease, CEO at Jaguar Vector Racing said: “After 12 months of hard work, this

THE SHARING ECONOMY: MAKING BOATING MORE ACCESSIBLE
I
n a bid to encourage more wannabe boaters to take to the water, Yacht Haven Quay, a Plymstock boatyard, has launched a Boat Club which offers shared access to a motorboat. Will Rahder, manager at the boatyard, says the idea came from the shared economy concept, led by AirBnB and Uber. “Trends show that ownership of boats is decreasing so we decided to create a Boat Club where members can use a high quality and versatile boat as they wish, without the worry of all the other elements that come with ownership such as maintenance, depreciation and storage”. The boatyard needed to add extra
safety features to a new 7m Beneteau Barracuda motorboat to satisfy MCA approval. As a result, club members only require a standard RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification to take the boat out and any necessary training can be arranged as part of their membership.
It is hoped that the scheme will encourage more people to get involved in boating as a hobby and to inspire the next generation of possible boat owners. yachthavens.com/boatclub
RECORD YEAR FOR VOLUNTEERING REPORTED BY CANAL & RIVER TRUST
T
he Canal & River Trust has published its 2017/18 Annual Report & Accounts charting a further year of progress for the charity which cares for around 2,000 miles of historic inland waterways across England and Wales. The report highlights that volunteering on the waterways has been a particular success, with active volunteers now exceeding the number of employees as they help the Trust to deliver its charitable objectives. Volunteers clocked-up over 600,000 hours, with a 96% satisfaction rate. The success in volunteering is in addition to community ‘adoptions’, and this year the Trust reports 225 community groups working

alongside the charity with local people participating in the care of their local stretches. Commenting on the report details, Richard Parry, chief executive, said: “Our continued growth in volunteering complements and enhances the vital work that our experienced and skilled colleagues deliver. “Our work across the network has been underpinned by an increase in the number of boats together with strong investment and income performance which now sees the Trust generate more than £150 million each year in addition to our £50m Government grant. This means we can continue the underlying increase in spend on the care and repair of our waterways.”

IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF REFITS ICOMIA (THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF MARINE INDUSTRY ASSOCIATIONS) IS THE INTERNATIONAL TRADE ASSOCIATION REPRESENTING THE GLOBAL MARINE INDUSTRY. THEIR COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER, HAZEL LEWIS, TALKS TO TODAY’S BOAT ABOUT THE WORK UNDERTAKEN BY THEIR SUPERYACHT REFIT GROUP.
F
ormed in Barcelona in 2009, the purpose of the ICOMIA Superyacht Refit Group is to provide an international platform to discuss refits. The primary goals of the group have been to formulate best industry practice, and to produce and refine a code of practice, and what the group refers to as the Refit Contract. Only those able to demonstrate distinct quality in management are considered for inclusion into the group and all members of the refit group are shipyards that follow the group’s code of practice, ensuring a high standard of work is achieved. The Refit Group Code of Practice covers aspects such as organisational transparency; use of fit-for-purpose, tested and certified materials and equipment; insurance and warranty; customer satisfaction and environmental compliance. ICOMIA Refit Group members also utilise the Refit Contract, which is now the industry standard and used by a large majority of management companies and refit shipyards across the world. Refits can be costly, complex and take a significant length of time, so it is important that any agreement provides security for both the client and the

shipyard. Before a refit has even begun suitable financial, insurance, quality and redelivery processes are some of key elements that can be guaranteed using this contract. An internationally recognised standard contract also speeds up the process of contractual settlement and brings certainty to refit agreements. Over the past eight years, the contract has been inspected and developed by insurers, management companies, prominent international marine lawyers and by the industry itself. The Refit Group has also worked on the technical research behind the creation of the contract, and continues to be at the forefront of technical and environmental developments in the industry. The contract is constantly being reviewed and improved and is now widely used across the industry. It has covered hundreds of projects totalling 100s of millions of euros and the feedback from users has been predominantly positive. Large yards see the contract being used again and again, and it is now accepted as the industry standard. Its use is also supported by MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association, which guides its members on the highest ethical and technical standards.

Yacht owners, captains and managers can be assured that by working with yards that are members of the ICOMIA Superyacht Refit Group, they will receive the highest quality of refit. Going forward the group will continue to set the standard for refits internationally and will work on educating captains, managers and owners on how to get the highest quality refits on superyachts. www.icomia.com

HAVE YOUR SAY
JANE GENTRY, CEO OF YBDSA, CALLS FOR THE BOATING COMMUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN A CONSULTATION INTO A NEW CODE DESIGNED TO HELP ENSURE PLEASURE VESSELS SAIL WITHIN THE LAW.
A
ccording to the letter of the law, private vessels being used commercially on a one-off basis – such as manufacturers and brokers taking boats to exhibitions or on sea trials, whether for sale or testing, and whether undertaken by a broker, surveyor, repairer – should be coded. If the vessel is intended for use as a private vessel after that, this is simply not workable. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) recognise this and are working on the development of a new Intended Pleasure Vessel (IPV) code, with support from YBDSA, RYA and British Marine. The new code is due for publication on January 1st 2019, but before then the MCA are calling for feedback through a public consultation which runs until September 26th. Split into two parts, Part 1 of The IPV Code allows for intended pleasure vessels (boats which usually are pleasure vessels) to be in temporary commercial use at sea on a singlevoyage basis. This is for business purposes relating to repair, postproduction, post-repair or mid-survey sea trials, customer sea trials, or vessel delivery outside the definition of a pleasure vessel. It applies to all UK intended pleasure vessels of any size, wherever they may be. Part 2 of the code allows for intended pleasure vessels to be in temporary commercial use at sea on a singlevoyage basis as a race support boat. This is for boats used for race support
WWW.TODAYS-BOAT.COM | 01795 509111|
activities affiliated to the national governing body of the sport. All owners of pleasure vessels (irrespective of whether it is owned by an individual or a company) are responsible for making sure that all use is in accordance with the pleasure vessel definition or, if not, appropriate commercial standards are met. Anyone taking a vessel to sea for business purposes as an owner, manufacturer, broker, repairer or surveyor becomes an operator in accordance with this code of practice. So it is essential that all owners and users of pleasure vessels which may be affected study the draft new code and look at the draft new Marine Guidance Notes (MGN). This is why we are encouraging our members and the broader boating community to examine the draft code and MGN; consider the particular times you would or could need the code to test how it works. If there is anything which is unclear
@TODAYS-BOAT |
TODAYSBOATMAGAZINE
or which you think is not covered, please respond to the consultation. Ultimately, your input is key to ensuring we go forward with an MGN that works for you. The MCA will be at the TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show to answer any specific questions as will YBDSA and RYA. Meanwhile the consultation documents can be viewed at: www.gov.uk/government/ consultations/intended-pleasurevessel-ipv-code-pleasure-vesselexemptions
18 : CHARTER
MAKING WAVES IN THE CHARTERING WORLD TODAY’S BOAT FINDS OUT MORE ABOUT A NEW APP-BASED SUPERYACHT CHARTER SERVICE WHICH LOOKS SET TO SHAKE UP THE TRADITIONAL CHARTER INDUSTRY.
T
echnology is disrupting all areas of our lives today, so it should come as no surprise that the boat industry is being affected to. In the same way that Uber has disrupted the traditional taxi industry and Airbnb has changed the way that many of us book accommodation for our holidays and business trips, the boat charter industry is seeing huge upheavals from insiders and boat owners who believe there is a better way to run a charter service, using digital technology. One of these ‘upstarts’ is Ian Malouf, who has over 20 years of experience in the boat industry, and who is also the owner of the superyacht Mischief. He believes that with Ahoy WWW.TODAYS-BOAT.COM | 01795 509111|
Club he has found a better way. Today’s Boat caught up with him to find out more. TB: How does the Ahoy Club service differ from traditional charter services? IM: The traditional chartering process is much harder and more expensive than it needs to be. The aim of Ahoy Club has been to make the experience quicker, more informative and more fun using digital technology to replace the outdated manual process. The service is based around a simple three-step process. Once a yacht has been selected and requested by the charter guest via the Ahoy Club app, an owner’s acceptance will then automatically generate a transparent

TODAYSBOATMAGAZINE
and independently recognised digital contract – and a 25% deposit is immediately accepted via credit card instead of the current 50% deposit required when the transaction is done via a bank transfer. The time saved in the chartering process alone can amount to weeks, revolutionising the industry for guests and owners alike. The platform also includes features such as YOTSWAP which allows owners to exchange their yachts – so, for example an owner with a yacht in the Caribbean could swap with an owner whose yacht is in the Mediterranean, saving fuel and relocation costs. Then the Empty Voyage feature allows an owner to offer a more affordable charter between the port where one guest has disembarked and a second port where the next guest is due
CHARTER : 19 to embark – for a trip which would otherwise have been empty. TB: Do you see such a service disrupting any other sectors of the leisure marine industry? IM: Ahoy Club provides a wider choice to charterers as they can access over 2,200 yachts on the platform. Currently, the charter season is focused on the peak three summer months. Our automated platform allows yacht owners to set prices for specific periods. I believe that this have the effect of lengthening the charter season which has been limited to peak periods in July and August, principally because the traditional chartering process is so slow and inefficient. TB: What reaction to the service have you had from superyacht owners and from the industry? IM: Customers and owners love the new service and the transparency it provides. Ahoy Club can lower the cost of chartering by up to 30%
which makes it accessible to a wider market. Of course this has the effect of generating more revenue for superyacht owners. We have received a mixed reception from retail charter brokers in the industry. Central agents and some retail brokers do see the benefit of expanding the market to a significantly wider clientele around the globe. They also see the benefits of managing the charter process through a fully automated platform which gives customers more control and greater choice. On our platform customers have full access to itinerary recommendations and information on charter regions that would provide them with the knowledge and information to make better-informed decisions for their yacht charter adventures. Ahoy Club’s commission is as low as 4% on the charter fee and 3% software fee. I believe that brokers understand that the improvement that Ahoy Club has
WWW.TODAYS-BOAT.COM | 01795 509111|
bought to the market was inevitable and that such a change is long overdue. Whether they like us or loath us they know that something like this really did have to happen. I believe the fees being charged by traditional brokers are out of touch with the expectations of the market today. TB: What is the next step for Ahoy Club? IM: Ahoy Club will continue to expand globally. Our headquarters are in London, and we have office in Sydney. We are currently also planning to establish further offices in the south of France, New York and Hong Kong. ahoyclub.com

With a survey carried out by the show’s organisers revealing that almost two-thirds of Brits would buy a boat if they won the lottery, and the prolonged period of (mostly) great weather much of the UK has been experiencing, it couldn’t come at a better time. Much has changed in 50 years, but our love for the ocean remains unwavering. As the marine environment becomes an increasing global concern, the show will be host to leading and well-known scientific and wildlife experts highlighting the environmental challenges facing the boating world in 2018. This will include on and off the water attractions from the National Oceanography Centre, the UK’s leading centre of excellence for oceanographic studies. Alongside

CLEANING UP MARINE PAINTS AND ANTI-FOUL PRODUCTS ALI BOTTOM, DIRECTOR OF GROUP MARKETING AT WITHAM OIL & PAINT EXPLAINS THE ISSUES BEING FACED IN THE MANUFACTURE OF ANTI-FOULING PRODUCTS AS THE INDUSTRY TRIES TO FIND A BALANCE BETWEEN DELIVERING EFFECTIVE PRODUCTS AND MINIMISING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT.
T
he last few years have seen some real crackdowns on additives and ingredients that go into providing effective anti-fouling and below the water line paint products. As the swell builds more than ever before to clean up our waterways and oceans, what are the facts and what can you do to help? Applying an antifouling paint prevents the attachment of fouling organisms such as barnacles, weeds and slime to the hull of a boat. Without this protection, a fouled hull can cause serious problems. A fouled hull is an economic and environmental disaster for a boat owner. It can cause a boat to burn 40% more fuel emitting 40% more waste gasses (CO2, SOx), with a significant financial cost and impact on air pollution. A vessel which is not antifouled can also transport unwanted invasive species into sensitive ecosystems. So it is vital for owners to protect their boat, as once fouling takes hold on a hull, it will rapidly colonise the surface, making it difficult to remove. Anti-fouling treatment of boats has been carried out for hundreds of years, progressing from original copper plated and copper-based

products to the more sophisticated chemical products of the modern day. These products work when the toxins in anti-fouling products poison the living organisms that attach themselves to boats and jetties and other structures below the water line. Because of the way they work, anti-fouling products are classed as biocidal products/pesticides (nonbiocidal bottom paints do not fall under this classification), and in 2014 the EU Biocidal Regulations required that all antifouling products were thoroughly reviewed and assessed before they could be registered for use. As a result of this review, certain additives are no longer permitted in these products in these products for environmental reasons. To meet these requirements, manufacturers including Witham

Oil and Paint have adjusted the formulation of their anti-fouling range to eliminate the harmful suspects. These regulations are under constant review, and it is likely that there will be another round of biocide removal in the future. FINDING A BALANCE Science is playing a big part in resolving this global challenge to keep boat hulls protected in an environmentally friendly way. Work is going on to develop coating layers that will fix to a boat but also allow the organisms to attach without causing damage. In addition, other ideas in development include toxin free anti-fouling products, but by the nature of the coating, this will take some time to come to market. www.withamgroup.co.uk

vessels such as ferries, pilot and supply boats, as well as yachts. It uses hybrid technology developed elsewhere within the Volvo Group, which is being adapted and certified for marine applications.
The IPS hybrid system is planned initially for the 8-13l engine range – which is suitable for powering
“A hybrid provides a flexible solution, that maintains the high efficiency offered by our IPS system and adds the ability to run in zero-emission environments,” said Niklas Thulin, Director of Electromobility at Volvo Penta.
olvo Penta’s hybrid concept is an extension of its existing Integrated Propulsion System (IPS) which will allow boats to operate in low and zero emission zones, in addition to offering the benefits of lower noise, less vibration and reduced running costs.

The Volvo Penta solution, which is expected to enter sea trials in 2020, adds a clutch and electric motor between the engine and the IPS pod. The electric motor is supported by scalable Li-ion battery packs that can be charged externally using AC or DC chargers, or recharged using the primary diesel engine. Opening the clutch allows the boat to run in electric-only mode, while with the clutch closed both diesel and electric power can be used in parallel. Concerning operation, the system is

expected to retain the familiar IPS control interface, with the addition of new drive mode options. Niklas from Volvo Penta has already mentioned the potential legislation and regulation that looks set to affect the marine sector, and this was one of the driving forces behind the company’s latest development. In the years to come, we must expect more low and zero emission zones to be introduced around the World. The Norwegian Parliament has already acted to halt emissions from cruise ships and ferries in the Norwegian world heritage fjords – they will become zero-emission zones by 2026, where only electric ships will be able to go. Many Swiss and Italian lakes also have imposed restrictions on the use of internal combustion engines on water. In the UK Rutland Water and the Lake District already impose restrictions on the use of combustion engines on the water, while United Nations and other global agreements relating to climate change legislation also demand that the marine industry starts to give greater consideration to its impact on the environment. A CLEAN AIR STRATEGY While the Port of London Authority (PLA) is the first UK port authority to issue a clean air strategy, as part of the Transport for London strategy, it is unlikely to be the last. “Legislative requirements are driving the commercial industry to clean up ports as many are close to cities. In the future this will no doubt result in changes becoming necessary within the leisure marine sector too,” predicts Tony Birr, Business Development Manager at Goodchild Marine Services. Tony does not believe that there is
currently a strong enough drive for the private marine leisure industry to move to hybrid or all-electric propulsion because it is too costly. “The superyacht sector is lIkely to be the first to follow commercial boats, as the cost is not such a consideration here.” Goodchild Marine Services is building a hybrid Pilot boat for the PLA. The ORC 136.HY is a parallel hybrid pilot boat which will combine both diesel and electric power and will be emission-free when operating in electric mode. For this project, Goodchild Marine Services is partnering with EP Barrus and its Yanmar engines, and transmission specialists, Marine and Industrial Transmissions for the Transfluid Hybrid system, to deliver the plug-in diesel hybrid pilot boat. The vessel is due for delivery in Spring 2019. So, according to Tony, it looks like the push to hybrid solutions will be driven by the commercial sector where legislation is making this a pressing requirement. “The business case for
WWW.TODAYS-BOAT.COM | 01795 509111|
hybrid technology in this sector is also much stronger over the life of the boat,” he reasons. “The return on investment on hybrid boats used dayin-day-out will be much quicker than on occasionally used leisure craft.” The tipping point for change in the leisure marine industry will only come when the cost of hybrid solutions comes down and when battery technology improves further. “Today’s hybrid solutions still demand too many compromises,” said Tony. “Although this will slowly change in the same way that hybrid cars have now started to overcome the limitations originally imposed on them.” ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES Commenting on the issues driving the move to hybrid propulsion systems in the leisure marine industry Phil James, Senior R&D Engineer at EP Barrus, said:

30 : HYBRID PROPULSION “An increased awareness of environmental issues and increasing use of hybrid technologies in motor vehicles is giving boat owners greater confidence in the technology.” EP Barrus is currently building hybrid engines for use in narrow boats, in collaboration with Hybrid Marine, which has been developing advanced hybrid systems for over ten years. The Hybrid Marine Parallel hybrid concept allows narrow boats to be driven by the propeller with the engine in the usual way or, alternatively, by an electric motor. When moving under engine power, the system automatically reconfigures itself as an 8kW generator. At standard canal speeds, for every hour of engine propulsion enough energy is generated to travel for a further two hours under clean/quiet electric drive. In general, these hybrid canal boats can expect to see a 50% reduction in engine hours. “A Parallel hybrid system can be fitted to a vessel during initial construction
or retrofitted to an existing diesel installation. It will not disturb the normal shaft/propeller connection to the diesel, as it connects to the shaft in parallel with the standard engine,” said Graeme Hawksley of Hybrid Marine. “Hybrid systems have the most to offer in efficiency improvements during low to mid power cruising, and our systems make the best use of this basic principle. The standard diesel engine is sized to provide the maximum lower requirement for the vessel, while the electric drive is designed to match the boats mid-range power needs. This allows the electric drive components to be smaller and offers a cost-effective hybrid solution,” said Graeme. “In recent years we have seen a great deal of interest in hybrid technology. Our integrated hybrid systems have been designed from the ground up to provide an off the shelf solution, with all the complexity being hidden
away behind a user-friendly panel to ensure it is simple to operate.” Peter Thomas, director and hybrid drive specialist at Inspiration Marine, has also identified growing interest hybrids and all-electric boats. Why? “Hybrids can offer the best of both worlds allowing slow travel for long distances using electricity or faster travel by switching to diesel,” he said. GREENLINE HYBRIDS Inspiration Marine represents Greenline Yachts in the UK, and this boat builder offers a hybrid propulsion range. “There are already a great variety of different hybrid propulsion solutions available,” continued Peter. “Greenline uses a tandem system where the electric motor works alongside the diesel engine and both drive through one direct train. Other hybrids use a generator which provides electricity for electric pods or propellers. “Whether the additional cost of

offering hybrid is considered to be worthwhile will depend on the size of the boat. For example, the Greenline 39 could cost close to £400,000 – so the cost of adding a hybrid solution, at £25,000 extra, is not such a big issue. However, when you look at smaller boats then the cost will become more relevant – usually adding around 10% to the original cost,” continued Peter. Greenline has designed its hybrid boats from the ground up to benefit from the technology, with a hybrid hull design that is an evolution of its signature Superdisplacement hull to enable cruising at higher speeds while maintaining optimal consumption and stability at lower cruising speeds. A solar roof array ensures the batteries are fully charged and provides additional energy for the electric drive system and also supplies constant power to on-board power consumers. The Greenline Hybrid Drive System can collect, store and use electrical energy from the sun as well as
from the shore connection or the main engine-driven generator. With a solar array and a Hybrid drive electric unit, the yacht is effectively a mobile power station. ADLER SUPREMA Looking at other hybrid leisure marine boats, we found the Adler Suprema Hybrid which is the first 76ft flybridge yacht to incorporate Hybrid Marine Solutions (HMS) hybrid propulsion system, a turnkey solution that will fit almost any requirement ready for installation and which can be operated via a touchscreen on the helm station. The system combines two Caterpillar diesel engines, each with 1,150 hp and two ATE high efficiency 100 kW e-units – for emission and vibration free propulsion of up to 11 knots and a maximum speed of up to 30 knots. Users can choose between three different drive modes – electric, hybrid, or twin diesel. The propulsion system can change

modes in milliseconds to enable seamless shifting and constant power flow. The crew can control the system via an integrated touch screen command giving them full control at any time. The solution is said to offer savings of between 20% and 70% on fuel costs, as well as increasing maintenance intervals by up to 50%. We have offered a mere taste of what is happening in the hybrid propulsion industry. It makes sense, in a world where we are all having to make more environmentally sound choices, that more sustainable propulsion options are available for all water going vessels too. We have not even touched on developments in the all-electric propulsion industry and hope to bring you news about this technology in a future issue. In the meantime, we leave you to consider the idea that hybrid solutions can offer a future-proofing option to ensure that boats are still able to access all areas in a more tightly regulated future.

oonwave is a carbon sailing yacht owned by Stephan Schamback, who was an investor in Torqueedo before it was sold to Deutz in September 2017. Integrating the Torqueedo Deep Blue Hybrid system, that Stephan originally helped to develop, has resulted in a lighter, faster and more environmentally-friendly yacht. Deep Blue Hybrid is believed to be the first fully integrated system that combines a hybrid drive system with the entire on-board energy management and the solution makes it possible to use available power in a multitude of ways – for the highvoltage drive system, for the 24 V on-board power supply or to operate equipment with 230 V AC current. The combination of energy generated from renewable sources and by the generator means that there is always sufficient power available, but the generator does not need to run for so long. Clean and safe electricity can be used for all onboard equipment so it is no longer necessary to have propane or petrol on board. A tender can also be run electrically being charged from the Deep Blue Hybrid on-board power system. MINIMISING DRAG Moonwave now employs twin Deep Blue 25 kW electric saildrives and lithium batteries with technology from BMW i, as well as the latest version of the renewable energy generation and management system that is unique to Torqeedo’s Deep Blue Hybrid system. The lightweight saildrives, with folding propellers, help minimise drag under sail and have replaced a heavier retractable shaft system.

In hydrogeneration mode the propellers are activated to add energy to the system. The hydrogenerated energy can be used later for propulsion or to supply the vessel’s hotel loads. Additionally, a 20 m2 solar photovoltaic array designed and installed by Gochermann Solar Technology and Osprey Technical Consulting, delivers 4 kWp of solar power to both the high-voltage and low-voltage onboard systems. This has allowed Moonwave to move from two onboard gensets down to just one. Electricity is stored in a single high-capacity battery which delivers power for the large onboard power consumers. The automotivegrade lithium batteries have helped to reduce weight and increase the yacht’s performance. “With the Deep Blue Hybrid system, we have gained reliability, autonomy and performance, said Sébastien Lafitte, captain of SY Moonwave. “Moonwave is now over three tonnes lighter and a big part of this is thanks to the Deep Blue Hybrid system and components. THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME WHAT ARE THE KEY DESIGN TRENDS SHAPING THE GLOBAL YACHT MARKET, AND WILL WHAT WE SEE IN TODAY’S TOP-END DESIGNS AND CONCEPTS FILTER DOWN TO THE REST OF THE INDUSTRY TOMORROW? TODAY’S BOAT INVESTIGATES.
I
t is typical for design trends, whether functional or aesthetic, to start out life at the very pinnacle of a sector. Only this month, Ferrari has announced the development of a new lowtemperature system for baking paint which is expected to be developed across the broader automotive industry. The boating sector is no different. Many of the trends we see in recent high-end concepts and launches will find themselves becoming the norm and as costs and capabilities allow be seen in a more substantial proportion of the sector. So what are these trends? Well, much like the drivers behind Ferrari’s new paint technology, one of the factors driving many trends is environmental awareness. Polluting is not fashionable thanks WWW.TODAYS-BOAT.COM | 01795 509111|
to high profile campaigns such as the BBC’s Blue Planet series, while sustainability and energy efficiency are making business sense as well as environmental sense. Drive systems are a key focus of this environmental drive as a spokesperson from waterbased electromobility specialists, Torqueedo, told Today’s Boat: “The current trend towards electromobility is driven by fundamental developments that won‘t change over the next few years. There is an ever-growing world population, rising affluence in heavily populated countries, and, in parallel, increasing demands on energy consumption and mobility. At the same time, limits need to be placed on pollution of the atmosphere and the human influence on global warming. In line with this, consumer acceptance of sustainable lifestyles is continually rising, which
@TODAYS-BOAT |
TODAYSBOATMAGAZINE
can be felt in the increasing demand for electromobility – a trend which is the same on water as it is on land.” Both cost and the capability of the technology involved are currently placing limits on how far across the boating sector electric power can reach. But we think it is fair to say its scope will continually grow. And while it does, hybrid technology is bridging the gap in an increasing number of applications. Combining efficient propulsion with other innovations designed to improve efficiency is another growing trend. For example, Heesen Yachts’, Home, combined hybrid technology with the innovative Full Displacement Hull Form and lightweight materials to further enhance efficiency. Another aspect of boat and yacht design where efficiency has a role
DESIGN TRENDS : 35 is on-board technology, as Daniel Kerkhof, Sales Manager Netherlands at Crestron, explained: “Crestron technology plays an important role where yacht builders are making sustainability a central objective. For example, we can make sure the systems on board are only in use, and consuming power, when needed. The technology is also available to enable system monitoring on-board a yacht, ensuring renewable energy systems are functioning correctly. Is sustainability being driven by client demands or shipyards’ desire to take an environmental focus? Or indeed is there an element of ‘greenwashing’ at play – spin designed to create a perception that a business has green credentials purely for marketing benefits? We suspect it is a mixture, but an increasing number of shipyards are very clearly putting sustainability at the core of their offer. Heesen Yachts are an excellent example as Sara Gioanola from the company explained: “We are the change we want to see. That’s why we promote the use of smart technology and
implement it even on the boats we build on speculation. Hopefully, in the next few years more shipyards and more clients will become more aware of the environmental issue and will take actions.” On-board technology plays a significant role in another superyacht trend we already see filter further down into the motorboat market – on-board luxury. Daniel from Creston believes cost plays a role: “There is a vast amount of technology available for onboard integration and this has followed the same general trend across homes and meeting rooms. “Customers are more comfortable with modern technology and now expect the same level of sophistication on board their yachts as is found in residential properties. As technology has become more pervasive in everyday life, solutions have become more affordable which allows the price point to fit into smaller projects.” With a large portion of technology refits nowadays being focused
WWW.TODAYS-BOAT.COM | 01795 509111|
on enlarging the entertainment possibilities on-board we can see this trend continuing across the market. Alongside luxury comes customisation, another trend that is already moving beyond the superyacht market and which looks set to become available to a wider audience. Fairline has fully embraced this trend as a spokesperson from the company explained: “Our boats can now be configured in a wide variety of ways to ensure every customer gets their perfect boat. For example, with the Targa 63 GTO there is the choice of either an extended cockpit or extended saloon variants; the former offers large outdoor space, while the latter is for those where airconditioned interior space is more important.” It is safe to say that these trends will extend further into the industry. However, when aspects such as costs and technological capabilities allow them to do so remains to be seen. But the businesses that are ready to react when they do will make the most of the opportunities.

Paired with Icon Connect’s unique Priority Sharing system, the yacht’s Electronic Technical Officer (ETO) can self-manage how sources are made available to the various rooms, shared in order of priority or as a global source available to all rooms. This includes the Yacht Eye infotainment system, which provides a live visual display of location, speed, water temperature, weather and even the day’s lunch menu. As the owner and his family spend a lot of time on board, they required the ease and comfort of a full-time residence, rather than a seasonal holiday vessel, which was perfectly achieved by Icon Connect using the Crestron technology. www.crestron.com

REMOTE CONTROL NAVIGATION ROSETTI SUPERYACHTS ARE WORKING TO ADAPT REMOTE CONTROL TECHNOLOGY USED IN THE COMMERCIAL SECTOR FOR USE IN YACHTING.
U
sing a remote console that can be located in a land-based office, a yacht can now be manoeuvred using the same controls found on the vessel’s bridge. The remote control system is based on an M2M (machine-to-machine) connection system installed aboard a Lloyds Register-certified tugboat. Security is handled by the use of two Internet encrypted tunnels that provide a direct connection between the ship and the remote bridge, without needing to go through third party servers. Using the connection, it is possible to remotely manage the tug wherever it is, controlling its video system, the navigation, propulsion and engine room equipment. Using the same system, a yacht can be manoeuvred without by a senior officer located in a land-based office. The commands are relayed to dry land by the captain on board the vessel. A route can then be entered and the yacht ‘delivered’ to its final destination with progress monitored via a video system and night-vision cameras – assuring double control during navigation to avoid collisions. It is anticipated that in the autonomous revolution that is underway, nearly every
transportation vehicle will eventually be self-driving. For cars, it is likely to take years before we see them operating freely on our roads – outside of test conditions. But some commercial unmanned vessels may be at sea before the end of the decade and a logical conclusion is that superyachts will follow. While much of the technology for autonomous vessels is already in place, regulation needs to be properly updated. Autonomous ships are an area of special interest to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), which sets the standards for national and international waters and last year, the organisation launched a regulatory scoping exercise to analyse the impact of self-driving vessels.
depend on the level of autonomy permitted, and Lloyd’s Register, for example, has already published classification guidance for six autonomy levels. Maritime law is one of the oldest legal systems in the world that has successfully adapted from sail to steam and beyond – Rosetti Superyachts hope the same will hold true for autonomous remote-controlled vessels in the near future.
The extent of regulatory change will

he 2021 edition of the America’s Cup will see the radical AC75 Fly Monohull racing for the first time. The new rules were announced at the end of March, and Emirates Team New Zealand has already unveiled its design in a class that promises to be even faster than the AC50 catamarans. Of course, it is not only the America’s Cup that can benefit from the thrilling performance of these flying monohulls. As the new technology continues to develop and handling is fine-tuned, Philippe Briand and his team have recognised its potential over a range of sizes and budgets.

SAILING INTO THE FUTURE TODAY’S BOAT FINDS OUT HOW NAVIGATION IS REACHING OUT TO GENERATION Z.
A
t the age of eight, Jelte Liebrand, founder of savvy navvy, could often be found on the water, either playing around in an optimist or sailing bigger boats with his father and brother on some of the Netherlands many lakes. Little did he know that 35 years later, he’d be launching a brand new nautical navigation service designed to meet the needs of a modern generation of sailors. Fueled by a passion for sailing and technology, and inspired by his experiences sailing the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, back in 2013 and 14, Jelte began developing a new, user-friendly, navigation service aiming to build confidence among newly qualified skippers, boat owners and leisure sailors. Jelte and the team he assembled were driven by a desire to counter growing concerns that sailing is both inaccessible and unaffordable: that navigation can be intimidating when even the best of the best make mistakes. The leisure sailor - whether a boat owner or a charterer - are often, understandably, challenged. Reaching out to Generation Z According to data released by the RYA, participation in sailing is buoyant, with 3.96m adults taking to the water in 2017 despite recent wobbles in consumer confidence. In the same timeframe, UK sport has committed to increased funding to just shy of £26m in the run up to the Tokyo Olympics 2020. So yachting remains high profile, but

the challenge now is maintaining levels of growth, particularly amongst millennials and Generation. In a world where constant updates, multitasking, reduced levels of ownership and all-round entrepreneurial spirit are the new

normal it is clear that the leisure sailing industry needs to respond to continue to connect. Jelte believes the way to respond is through the development of new tools, technologies and services.
TODAY’S NEWS : 41 Enhancing the sailing experience Confidence is key. All charter companies want their vessels to return on-time and scrape-free, while charterers are keen to ensure they have the best sail possible, arrive and depart in daylight and avoid bad sea-states. If sailors and skippers are getting out on the water only a handful of times every year, they’re looking for a great sailing experience that delivers a perfect balance of good wind, limited time running on an engine and the chance to enjoy their destination, seek out the best eateries and soak up the atmosphere harbourside. With this in mind, and as a former Google software engineer, Jelte draw inspiration for savvy navvy from Google Maps – the go-to, global navigation tool for many of us hoping to beat the traffic, journey to our destination smoothly and get an accurate estimate of our likely time of arrival. After all, why shouldn’t we have the same experience at sea? With its clear interface, savvy navvy aims to be fresher and easier to read than some of the current tools on the market. Not unlike its land-based inspiration, the savvy navvy tool allows users to drop pins at desired departure and destination points before the software calculates potential routes and journey times, using automatically sourced data. Weather data is factored in as are a growing number of hydrographic charts – with new data being added on a continual basis. The nautical chart licences are incorporated into the savvy navvy app, so the sailor isn’t bothered with finding, downloading, importing and updating charts. The current version of savvy navvy also factors in charted shallows/hazards to its calculations, with plans to add departure planning and tidal calculations over the next year. Once fully featured, the savvy navvy
app aims to offer a complete feature set not available in any other single tool. “My vision is to help the sailor produce safe routes they simply might not have been able to work out themselves, allowing them more time to enjoy the actual sailing. To plot the best course, you need to look at wind, waves, tides, ocean currents, the boats polar, charted shallows and dangers, shipping lanes and many other variables, a lot of which change over time,” explained Jelte. The engineer in my head was screaming at the various algorithms that could optimise this process. So I spent a long time designing the best, scalable solution which would leave the hard computations to the computer, and the sailing (and being up on deck) to the sailor.” The future of chartering? The company is targeting the amateur cruiser and leisure boat owner at launch, however, the team are eager to develop commercial partnerships too, integrating savvy navvy into charter hire packages and offering subscriptions with boat sales, allowing all skippers to sail confidently in new territories. Similarly, the service aims to attract interest – and embraces feedback – from delivery skippers. Early sea-trials of savvy navvy in September 2017, started with the transport and delivery of a yacht from Palma to Sardinia and proved invaluable in avoiding challenging conditions at sea and

calculating smart alternatives to tried and tested routes. Marinas, boat shares and charter companies also feature in broader commercial aspirations as the service enters its second year of development. Then, longer term, the team aim to transpose the product to the motorboat market, plus develop an ‘elite’ savvy box, integrating with boat telemetry to literally ‘learn how you sail’. Navigation services have always been crucial for sailors, but the savvy navvy team look to have taken the bull by the horns to deliver increased clarity, functionality, and all-round usability, to a very traditional technology. ww.savvy-navvy.com

REPOSITIONING FUNCTION ENABLES BOATERS TO STAY IN FULL CONTROL

olvo Penta has added repositioning functionality to its Dynamic Positioning System (DPS). The new addition is designed to enable boaters to refine their movement and maintain position in choppy waters ¬– making minor alterations to their vessel’s position with a simple tap of a joystick. The feature automatically maintains the boat’s heading and position, and safely keeps it within a very limited area, even during strong currents or windy conditions which provides refined movement for activities such as fishing, exploring reefs, or allowing another boat to pass by when in a narrow waterway. All features of the DPS are automatic, meaning boaters
do not need to worry about wind or current interfering when changing position. The new repositioning feature enables the boat to move three meters with each tap of the joystick. It also allows for heading adjustments on the spot.
which make minor adjustments of movement. Available now on new boats installed with the company’s IPS, the functionality can also be retrofitted to most DPS-equipped boats. www.volvopenta.com
It operates thanks to specially developed software in the boat’s Electronic Vessel Control system which transfers GPS data into commands for steering angles, gear shifts and throttle positions
