News Top Veterinary Associations Lobby Government to Save Afghan Vets The Presidents of the RCVS, BVA and BVNA are calling on the UK Government to add Afghan veterinarians and veterinary paraprofessionals who have worked for and with UK-affiliated charities and NGOs to the emergency evacuation list from Afghanistan.

oint statement from RCVS President Kate Richards, BVA President James Russell and BVNA President Jo Oakden on Afghan veterinarians: “Like others we have seen with increasing horror the events unfolding in Afghanistan and our thoughts are with the Afghan people and their safety.

“We have written to the Prime Minister Boris Johnson asking for the UK Government to put Afghan veterinarians and veterinary paraprofessionals (and their families) who have worked with and for UKaffiliated charities and NGOs such as Nowzad and the Mayhew Afghanistan to be added to the emergency evacuation list.

“Under the current conditions, working for and being affiliated with western charities and NGOs may come with risks to the safety of Afghan veterinarians and veterinary paraprofessionals and their families, and so it is imperative that they are given the chance to evacuate and resettle in the UK as refugees as a matter of urgency, should they want to. These Afghan veterinarians and veterinary paraprofessionals have made an invaluable contribution to animal health and welfare, as well as public health, in Afghanistan, and, as fellow veterinary professionals, their safety is an utmost concern.

Pets at Home Leads Recycling Revolution Nationwide pet store first to install special recycling points for flexible pet food packaging • The UK’s leading pet care business paves the way in recycling flexible plastic pet food packaging • 40 Pets at Home stores are trialing the new service • Initiative backed by pet food producers Mars and Nestle In an industry first, nationwide pet care business Pets at Home is leading the way by introducing dedicated recycling points for flexible pet food packaging.

The new initiative, which is being supported by pet food producers Mars and Purina PetCare, aims to combat flexible packaging waste in the sector, tackling the pet food packaging made of these materials.

Pets at Home has partnered with environmental charity Hubbub to run the trial, which has so far been rolled out across 40 stores and three Vets4Pets practices in the UK. Following the trial, the initiative will be rolled out wider across the country with the aim of having recycling points in the majority of Pets at Home stores by the end of next year.

Working with specialist recycler Enval, who have developed a microwave induced pyrolysis process which easily recycles and recovers flexible, rigid and complex plastics, Pets at Home and its partners are establishing the first store take-back and recycling scheme specifically for pet food packaging.

The process, which is a world-first solution to recycling flexible plastics, involves heating the packaging up to 600 degrees to separate the aluminium and plastics layers. The aluminium is recovered, clean and ready to be 8 | www.christiesdirect.com

recycled and the plastic is converted into oils and gases. The oils can then be reused for other products and in fact Enval is now working with several plastic producers who are aiming to use them as feedstock for new plastic, with the ambition of achieving full circularity.

The gases on the other hand are used in a conventional gas generator to produce the electricity to run the microwaves, thereby making the process self-sustaining. By using electricity to heat up the process it means that the Enval plant doesn’t have a stack or chimney making it clean, efficient and economical for both post-

consumer and industrial waste.

Flexible plastics (plastic that can be bent, squeezed or scrunched) represents a quarter of all UK consumer plastic packaging but only 4% is currently recycled.

Keep an Eye on Pets Pet Eye Health Awareness Week – Helping Pet Owners and Professionals Identify Eye Disease

T

his September sees the return of TVM UK’s Pet Eye Health Awareness Week (20-26 September 2021), which is dedicated to help identify common symptoms of eye disease.

Eye problems in pets can be uncomfortable and if left untreated can lead to blindness, so it’s important that pet owners learn what symptoms to look out for.

TVM will be broadcasting seven, short videos where their resident vet will be discussing common symptoms of poor eye health on their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/TVMUK).

These will be broadcast daily from Monday 20th September though to Sunday 26th September.

The opening of the 54 square meter showroom comes as the family-owned company also celebrates 25 years in the grooming business. Directors Jamie and Stephanie Roberts first started the company from their dining room table, and it has since grown to be a UK leader in the industry. ‘We are pleased with what we have achieved in the dog grooming business in the past years and we enjoy hearing about our products performance. The last year hasn’t been the easiest but we all need to look ahead and that’s why we are here today to look ahead,’ said Mr Roberts.

Burns Pet Nutrition Goes Carbon Neutral with State of the Art Facility

B

urns has stepped up its dedication to the environment with a state-of-the art building that minimises greenhouse gas emissions and reinforces their commitment to the community.

Set in 20 acres of farmland, the building is used as a community centre, training facility and conference centre, as well as being home to the John Burns Foundation, a charity founded

by Burns Pet Nutrition to establish and maintain a legacy of good causes in the community.

The building is just a stone’s throw away from the Burns Pet Nutrition head office in Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, and features electric car charging points and state-of-the-art solar panels heated by a biomass boiler; a greener alternative to common energy-guzzling heating systems.

The assessment for the building’s Energy Performance Certificate identified around 55 tonnes of CO2 savings per year compared to a building using fossil fuels. In addition to the

energy saving features of the new building, the facility includes disability access, a hearing loop for those with hearing difficulties and vehicles that can be borrowed or hired out for community events or charitable causes.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, the majority of household CO2 emissions come from heating. In 2017, the average household generated 2,745 kg of CO2 emissions from heating, and this needs to reduce by 95% to achieve the UK target of Net Zero by 2050.

Burns’ new sustainability initiative is just another step towards their mission of doing as much as they can for pets, people and the community. By today, the John Burns Foundation charity employs 9 members of staff, and has a sister charity in Ireland. Their aim is very simple; to make a difference to the lives of people and companion animals across the UK and enhance the lives of disadvantaged people as much as possible. The building offers practical recreational facilities and life skill opportunities, as well as using the

arts, the outdoors and events to bring enjoyment to the whole community.

Clipping Tips Groomer and trainer, Sally Hart, shares her top clip tips: Coat Type & Prep Before we can get on with clipping, it is important to have a well prepped coat, without this, you will not achieve the flawless results we all strive for. Coat type is an important factor in how you prep your dog, affecting your choice of shampoo, conditioner (or not), extra products, drying technique, nozzle, equipment, etc. (This is another topic for another time) Once you start clipping, you want to be sure that the coat is as ready for the style and finish you want.

Removing the dead hair and undercoat means less resistance for the clippers, and having the hair laying smoothly and with the natural lie of the coat, leaves you with a better finish. This is particularly important with silky and drop coats. For wool coats, having the hair fluffed up and full of volume means you can clip and acquire that lovely crisp finish. And wire coats often need extra attention to removing the dead undercoat.

Clippers Without clippers we would not be clipping, so perhaps they need a mention.

Clipper maintenance is paramount.

Clippers that are clogged with hair, excess oil and grease, or have a worn blade drive, can have a detrimental effect on your clipping. Dragging, leaving lines, and running too slowly, are just some of the things we can avoid with good maintenance.

When it comes to clipper brands, we are extremely lucky to have a wide variety. Our choices will be made by a personal considerations and needs.

Way back in the grooming ‘Dark 18 | Total Grooming Magazine

Ages’ and particularly in deepest Africa (ok, South Africa isn’t so off the beaten track, but it was far behind in grooming products), the only option for clippers were the Oster Golden A5.

Now, I still have a couple of pairs, AND they are still working! 28 years later!

But they are heavy, get hot and not as ergonomically designed as modern clippers.

For me, the Pulse ZRll clippers are the fastest running and most comfortable to hold. Being cordless means a heavier clipper, but less drag from the cord pulling the back down, and much more manoeuvrable.

My second choice would be the Oster 3000i. not quite as fast as the Pulse, but slightly lighter.

Wahl and Heiniger vibrate too much and this vibration can cause issues with carpal tunnel syndrome and HAVS (Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome), so this rules them out for me.

Speed is another factor that really influences your clipping, and the more powerful the clipper the better the finish but remember that faster clippers will heat the blades up quicker, so you will need spare blades.

Blades & Comb Attachments As with clippers, maintenance is of utmost importance, not only for that clipping finish, but also for the life of your blades. Well maintained blades do not need sharpening anywhere near as frequently.

Clogged hair, excessive oil and all the other unmentionables that we find in dogs’ coats, (I particularly gag at finding poo or other unnameable gunk between clipper blades’ teeth), can be detrimental to your blades and this is why prep work can help extend the life of your equipment.

Choosing your blade or comb attachment to suit the coat type and ultimate style is the first step to great clipper work. For instance, we can emulate the course look of a handstripped dog by using a comb attachment or skip tooth blade. Also, by using a longer blade it allows for easier blending, so I try to avoid going 20 | Total Grooming Magazine

too short for any coarse coated dogs or styles that require lots of blending work.

I find the Mastercut wide blades and comb attachments are indispensable. Not only do they clip more coat at each pass, but they allow for a better finish.

Technique Once you have chosen your weapon, armed it with the selected blade, and you have your prepped dog ready, it is time to get that coat off.

Routine is important. For me, it prevents me missing bits, and means I won’t be going back over areas, or moving the dog unnecessarily. For most dogs, maintaining routine is better too. If every visit, things are done in the same order, they will find it less stressful and are, usually, more accommodating.

Being right -handed I find it easier to start on the right side.

On most coats back brushing the coat, just before clipping, can help to achieve a better finish, quicker and with less clipping.

Wool coats need to be lifted up as much as you can before clipping to leave a neat crisp finish.

For coarse coated dogs that I want to maintain that coarseness, texture and appearance, as much as possible, I do not back brush.

I start clipping from the withers to the tail and then down the sides and over hips and shoulders, following the direction the coat lies. Using long strokes, rather than lifting and replacing the clippers. This helps leave a better finish and means less times going over the same area. (Thankfully, watching a video of myself showed that I use longer strokes than I thought).

To avoid differences in length, maintain the same angle and pressure when you clip. Keeping the skin taut will avoid divots and it more

comfortable for the dog.

For the neck and chest, I clip down to the breastbone, and then out towards the shoulders. To avoid uncovering the whorls on the chest, I often clip these with a blade length 2 higher to prevent the balding.

Reverse clipping is a technique that often pops up in topics in Facebook grooming groups. This is a technique I rarely use, and most instances are for specific areas, like poodle and Bedlington faces. Reverse clipping, with a short blade, the body coat on a breed whose coat naturally lies flat and close to the skin, can potentially cause damage to hair follicles. The resulting alopecia, commonly known as coat funk, does not always occur after the first reverse clip, with the frequency, age and health of the dog being a contributing factor. For me, I prefer to eliminate the possibility of causing a disrupted regrowth.

Final comments In a nutshell, clipping is like most of our grooming, it is not a case of just turn the clippers on and go. There are many various aspects that need to be considered before we start and for the best results getting the preparation done correctly, makes the outcome we desire easier to achieve.

mistake is people jumping into one of the above without knowing how they operate. This is when errors are made and when you start receiving those dreaded brown envelopes through the door from HMRC. If you’re just starting out and have not run a business before then the most common and recommended route is registering yourself as a Sole Trader. The reason this is the most popular, is because it is very easy to set up (just type into google ‘register for self-assessment’) and it’s the one that comes with fewer rules and regulations.

Once you have registered your business (which you must do within 90 days of trading) and you have your Unique Tax Reference number then you are good to go. Simple right?

With this type of operation, you run your own business as an individual and it is not considered a separate legal entity. You can keep all the profits after you’ve paid tax on them and you are responsible for any losses the business makes. If you have another job, the profit or loss of your sole trader business is combined with this income.

Advantages • Easy to set up • Accountancy fees are less • No legal requirement to have a separate business bank account • Easy to manage • One annual tax return • You don’t need to give yourself a separate wage and record it.

Disadvantages • You are responsible for the losses/ debts • This is not a separate legal entity, if someone was to take legal action against you, it would be against you as the individual not the business.

Now this is where is starts to get more complicated. A limited company as you will see is more complex and more time consuming and will cost you more in accountancy fees.

A limited company is a separate legal entity to you as an individual. It must also file accounts and a tax return and pay tax on the money it receives. This 24 | Total Grooming Magazine

is different from a sole trader. The owners/shareholders are protected from the liabilities of the business.

This is what makes it attractive to people when they are looking at the different options, and the rate of tax is slightly lower than that of a sole trader.

However, this is now set to change as a result of the 2021 Budget.

When choosing a name for a limited company you must get approval from Companies House to use that name.

You must also set up a payroll if you are taking a wage from the business and you must legally have a business bank account.

With a limited company you will have your own self-assessment return to complete in addition to the company’s filing responsibilities.

Advantages • Separate legal entity • More tax efficient when you are making high profits • May find it easier to secure funding • Pension possibilities Disadvantages • A longer and more complicated process due to more administration, on account of more business details and company accounts • Higher accountancy fees • Legal rules and obligations Hopefully you now have a better understanding of what is available to you and how they work. There is no right or wrong answer, so if you’re sitting there thinking you shouldn’t have done something then don’t panic.

Expenses Now onto my favourite topic - expenses.

This is what I get asked the most about in my Facebook group (Accounting for Pet Professionals) and is probably the most confusing for new business owners.

Starting your own dog grooming business is not cheap, so you need to

make the most of your tax return and give as little away as possible. The way to do that is to make sure you are claiming for everything you can. Now this is not easy I know; you type into google ‘can I claim for…?’ and you get hundreds of different answers which is not overly helpful. There is also a lot of conflicting advice on social media when one person states you can claim for specific things then someone else comes along and states you can’t.

This is where someone like me comes in, to help keep you on the right track. So, let’s get down to the nitty gritty of the most common expenses that you CAN claim for…telephone/ internet, protective clothing, stationery, insurance, bank charges, accountancy fees, training courses, books/ magazines, business subscriptions, software, consumables eg shampoos etc, equipment, blade sharpening, advertising, utilities, motor expenses (seek advice). This is just a short list of items that can be included. Make sure you keep a record of everything you purchase for the business and keep the receipts for a minimum of six years.

How are you recording these….Excel spreadsheet? Good old-fashioned pen and paper? Or are you down with the kids and using accounting software?

Having a good record keeping system in place will not only help keep you organised and get a gold star from your accountant, but also help you keep track of how your business is performing.

One final tip from me which will be discussed in more detail in the next article is around Making Tax Digital.

This comes into action in 2023 where an accountancy software will need to be used, so keep this in mind.

reative grooming is a funny one it’s like marmite - some love it some hate it! We know it’s not for everyone but it can look absolutely awesome when it is carried out correctly.

There’s so many techniques to master with creative grooming. In the same way that we are taught to groom dogs it’s a whole new ball game with creative.

The safety of the products, how to use them, what’s in them, the effect on a dogs skin etc... These are paramount.

But this article is a small intro into getting creative in the salon and some of the small things we can do to glam up the dogs.

Firstly, only ever do creative if the dog is happy to stand, is completely comfortable and you have permission from the owner. Make sure the products you use are safe!

If you want to practice without the permanent effect of colour. There are lots of products blo pens, chalks, paint pens, glitters, gems, feathers and so much more. We are lucky enough to have a small business in the UK who supplies all the dog safe creative supplies and is very informative and helpful about the products usage. So, if you are unsure find out. This company is called Riddles Creative Box. Always remember creative is creative so go as wild as your imagination will allow you to, BUT always remember how far the dog can go also. Remember keep away from the eyes, private parts, and if using colour, always do a patch test 48 hours before application - a little blob inside the groin area.

But think of all the amazing little extras you can do. I get asked by my clients to provide a creative makeover for weddings, parties, pride etc... and it can be the simplest of things like a

rainbow tail for pride. Some carving on the dog’s coat for an awesome effect, glitter furjazzles, feather extension on the ears, or even just the odd gem. It all washes out (apart from semi/perm colour) always remember to tell the owner that sometimes the product can transfer onto carpets etc... So, I always say ‘have you got cream carpets?’ If so I’m not chalking the dogs legs... Haha!

Beauty Tips for Groomers

Groomer and beautician, Jenny Farrell, shares some of her beauty secrets:

thought I would switch things around and give out some human beauty tips this month! It’s all good and well making our furry friends beautiful but what about ourselves!

Working in the grooming salon can cause issues with our own beauty regime.

A lot of groomers tie their hair back, this can cause thinning of the hair at the front of the face and also cause damage and breakage to the area where you tie your hair up. Try using silk scrunchies if you want to tie your hair back as these cause less damage to your hair.

in the salon can cause your own hair to dry out, make sure you mask your hair using coconut oil, argan oil and or extra virgin olive oil once a week for 2-10 hours. When you dry your hair, apply oils before to hydrate your hair. Argon, castor and nut oils are really great for your hair and you only need a tiny amount - 1 drop for long hair - after washing and before drying will work wonders on your hair.

I always recommend keratin smoothing treatments. They can be expensive but you can create a similar smooth glow at home using oils before drying!

Use really good grade shampoo,

do not use dog shampoos! Use a salt free,chemical free shampoo that will restore hydration into your hair, especially if you treat your hair (colour / keratin).

Hands are also a major problem area with contact dermatitis, psoriasis, dry skin, hard skin, broken nails the list goes on! So here we go!

Always moisturise your hands throughout the day and after wetting your hands. Use a good quality moisturiser made to hydrate skin.

Use a barrier cream before starting the day, this will prevent hair, dirt and chemicals drying out your hands. It is used by mechanics to prevent oil

build up on their hands.

Do not wear fake nails, acrylic extensions etc I can not tell you how gross this is and really not a great idea. Acrylic nails will lift with bathing and bacteria can breed under the lifted acrylic causing the nail bed to lift or rot.

If you want nice nails a gel polish is the best, replaced every 2 weeks and soaked off properly. If you get a chip, fill in the chip to prevent lifting.

I personally think natural short nails for grooming is best and look nice, natural short nails prevent nails damaging the dog (poking the eyes or scratching them).

Use good quality natural hypoallergenic shampoos in your salon, this will save your hands and if you have to use perfumes and sprays try to avoid rubbing them in with your hands, use a comb instead.

Lastly, if you use flea treatment or have a dog that has medicated shampoo or a skin condition you should be wearing gloves to prevent contact dermatitis or irritation.

good shoes that have support in them, use back and arm supports where and if needed and make sure you use proper equipment that will help you stay in shape such as electric tables that adjust height to suit your needs.

What is exfoliation?

Exfoliation involves the removal of the oldest skin cells on the skin’s outermost surface. Exfoliation can be mechanical or chemical.

Benefits of exfoliation 1. It removes dead skin cells When it comes to us, the accumulation of dirt on the skin may cause damage to our skin and making it look dull.

Exfoliation helps eliminate the dead skin to expose the fresh skin.

2. Improves blood flow Apart from removing the oldest skin cells, exfoliation increases blood flow in the skin.

3.Absorbtion of beneficial minerals Our dog’s bodies absorb the many minerals from the oils and salts with add to the scrubs via dermal absorption – just as we do.

A sea salt scrub is beneficial because of its exfoliating properties and the benefits of the sea salt and coconut oil themselves.

Granulated particles of sea salt in your homemade scrub will slough off dead surface skin cells and smooth the rough patches of skin.

Sea salt helps remove toxins from the skin and contains many skin nourishing minerals such as potassium, magnesium, iodine, and calcium.

Virgin coconut oil is bactericidal as it kills bacteria and is also antiviral.

Coconut oil is high in lauric acid. Lauric acid can damage the lipid cover of some viruses; therefore, it’s antiviral.

Another benefit of lauric acid is its high affinity for hair proteins and, because of its low molecular weight and straight linear chain, can penetrate inside the hair shaft. Therefore coconut oil reduces protein loss for both undamaged and damaged hair.

How to use the scrub: 1. Wash the dog well before the skin and coat are squeaky clean.

2. Apply the scrub with gentle circulatory movements and massage all over the body, avoiding the eyes and nose.

3. Rinse with warm water and wash with your favourite shampoo.

What salts to use?

1/ Dead Sea Salt This salt is different from other sea salts in terms of mineral content.

Dead sea salts are rich in minerals (including magnesium), and they also help release tension and help a dog to relax.

2/ Hawaiian Black Lava Sea Salt.

Made from Sea Salt harvested from the Pacific Ocean, the salt is infused with activated charcoal (derived from

coconut shells) to give it the distinctive black colour. The salt is known to have detoxifying and purifying qualities.

3/ Epsom Salt Epsom salt is a mineral compound called magnesium sulfate. They are used in everything from gardening to stabilizing aquarium water content.

Epsom salt is great for active, working dogs as it helps draw lactic acid from the body, which causes cramping and joint issues. If you have the same problem, try it!

Epsom salts also help skin conditions.

Itchy, sensitive skin and rashes respond well to Epsom salts. They also help to soothe embedded or ripped nails.

How often to exfoliate?

I would suggest using a salt scrub not more often than once a month.

Who gets the pets in a divorce?

Peter Reynolds, head of family law and partner at Rowberry Morris Solicitors based in Richmond, Surrey provides the answer:

uring the last 12 months, the pet industry has boomed.

Statistics show that 3.2 million households in the UK have welcomed a new pet into their homes since the start of lockdown in March 2020.

The mental health benefits of pet ownership are well known, which has been particularly important to many people navigating the social isolation caused by the pandemic. But whilst pets have undoubtedly mitigated the impact of separation from loved ones and colleagues for such a long period, their ownership will have hindered, not helped, the situation for some couples.

Divorce enquiries to legal firms have rocketed by 95% during the pandemic, with many citing spending too much time together or financial pressures as the main reasons for their separation.

Whilst this might not be surprising given the additional strain that Covidenforced alternate living and working circumstances have placed on many families, it does throw up several complex legal considerations for those involved, and it’s not just the division of money or childcare solutions that are causing the main headaches. It’s the tricky matter of what happens to the pets?

With an estimated 17 million households now reportedly caring for at least one animal, this could see an unprecedented amount of pet owners fighting with their other half about custody of their furry family members in the coming months. But what are the facts, and where do you stand legally 42 | Total Grooming Magazine

when it comes to deciding who gets the dog in a divorce?

What does the law say?

Divorce is generally broken down into three specific areas: the divorce itself, which legally brings an end to the marriage or civil partnership; the living arrangements for any dependent children; and the financial arrangements for both parties and the children.

Although many parties assume the living arrangements for their pets will be handled in a similar way to the children during a divorce, legally this is not the case.

English and Welsh Law in fact treats pets as assets or possessions, similar to cars or items of jewellery. As such, As such, any dispute about pets will be managed in the same way as a disagreement about items of property any disputes about pets in the same way it handles disagreements about items

of property. The court is not obliged to consider any of the personal and emotional attachments between pets and their owner, which people often find very confusing and upsetting.

How do you avoid going to court?

A mutually agreeable arrangement between both parties concerning ownership should be the primary objective. However, given that divorces can be highly emotionally charged, emotive matters such as pet ownership might not be so easily negotiated and it may be necessary to embark on mediation, which will enable those involved to negotiate via an impartial third-party.

Key things to consider are, what will cause the least amount of disruption to a pet’s life? Which living situation will best ensure their needs are met (think outdoor space, size of property, or working patterns)? Who can meet

the costs of continual care?

If mediation doesn’t work, arbitration could be another route to resolving matters without going to court. An arbitrator can look at a range of factors to determine who should keep the pet and make a final decision.

In the absence of agreement, some couples may ultimately give up their pet to a family member or friend, or even surrender them for re-homing.

Whatever the circumstances, selling or giving away a pet without the other party’s consent is generally inadvisable, as if the other party is found to be the legal owner, you could be charged with theft.

Prenuptials for pets?

No-one heads into a relationship thinking about how or when they might split up, but planning for all eventualities when things are civil and on good terms is sensible. Around 42% of marriages end in divorce and pets that outlive a marriage will need to be cared for.

The PDSA reports that a dog can cost its owner up to £30,800 throughout its life, whilst a cat could cost around £12,000, which makes engaging legal representation to prepare a prenuptial or cohabitation agreement for pets good financial sense.

It can save a lot of time and stress later too.

Prenups for pets can not only outline who will take primary care of any animals after separation, but can also determine potential contact arrangements, preferred veterinary support, the maximum amount you are each willing to spend on insurance, emergency care and end of life cover.

Significantly, a pet prenup can prevent one spouse from using the pet as a bargaining tool for getting something else they want out of a divorce and protect against one party exacting revenge by either withholding access or selling the pet.

What happens if the dispute reaches Court?

The Family Court will seek to establish legal ownership of the pet. However, 44 | Total Grooming Magazine

this is not usually dealt with until all other matters have been resolved and can take a long time.

A new status quo might be established that prejudices one party over the other and if a pet has been sold in the intervening period, the Court will no longer have any discretion to determine ownership. Moreover, any injunction to prevent such a sale is only likely to succeed if the pet is financially valuable.

The Family Court will determine the legal ownership of the pet by looking at several factors such as who purchased the pet, who is the primary carer, whose name is recorded on any microchip or insurance papers, and who is the animal registered to with the vets.

This can often be difficult to establish, particularly where the purchaser and primary carer are not the same person or where a joint account was used to fund the purchase costs, insurance cover and day to day care.

Where it is difficult to establish ownership, the Court will often focus on who has devoted most time to the care

of the pet during the marriage, and who will be able to continue doing so.

Each party would need to evidence their personal involvement and showcase the post-marriage routine that will allow them to look after the pet. The Court would consider who has the most appropriate accommodation, financial resources and ability to look after the pet.

Once the Court has ruled upon ownership it has the power to order the return of a pet to the legal owner and should it be required, award any damages for wrongful retention of the animal.

From a legal standpoint, it is always preferable to avoid taking these matters to court as they are often more costly from a financial and wellbeing perspective, especially when these issues can be easily managed ahead of time by opting for a prenup.

It takes just a few honest conversations and some legal assistance, and you can be sure your pets’ best interests will remain protected in all eventualities.

How to Have a Dog-friendly Staycation this Summer Leading animal welfare charity, Battersea, has created a guide to how to have a dog-friendly holiday this summer – it may be September but it’s not too late.

• Never leave your dog alone in the car, no matter how quick you think you might be away for. Cars can get extremely warm, very quickly, and can have fatal consequences for your dog.

• If travelling by public transport and your dog is an inexperienced traveller, try out shorter journeys in the lead up to the holiday so that your dog gets used to the sights and sounds.

• Pack well. Make sure you pack all the essentials for all eventualities – and any spares – just in case. A blanket or bed that is familiar to them, enough food to last the whole trip away, their favourite toys, any medication they might have (and enough of it), longlasting chews and treats are also a good idea. Don’t forget to pack a towel if your dog is impartial to a bit of swimming!

• It’s a good idea to make sure flea and worming treatments are all up to date before you set off.

• Once arrived at your destination, remember to follow all the rules of the local area concerning dogs - it is there for everyone’s safety.

• Most importantly, have a good time!

Eevie’s first holiday Eevie is a seven month old Shih Tzu who experienced her first holiday this summer.

Like many dog owners, Kim likes to be able to share her holiday with her dogs. Kim explains: “Seeing our dogs enjoy a change of scenery is part of the fun. Eevie was able to have her first positive encounters with various other animals safely. She found it all very exciting but took it all in her stride very quickly. Her favourite thing was splashing around in the streams and climbing up fallen logs which was great for using up that excess puppy
