New Faces Bring in New Members to the Pet Industry Federation

he Pet Industry Federation (PIF), the UK’s trade association for pet businesses, has announced the appointment of Gemma Martin as its new Membership Manager.

Gemma comes from a strong customer service background, gained from roles within the leisure industry and brings with her a degree in zoology. Her role will be to engage with PIF’s 2,000 members, developing new and improved membership benefits, and operating its new membership platform which will allow the organisation to increase social and community collaboration with its members.

Battersea Offers to Find Resident Pet for Number 10

Battersea has a long history of rehoming dogs and cats to Downing Street and were helping political pooches as long ago as 1920 when David Lloyd George adopted a St Bernard named Riffel from Switzerland.

When Riffel came to the UK, he was quarantined at Battersea’s Hackbridge centre. Since then, the focus has been feline, most notably with the arrival of the now world-famous Larry moving into Number 10 in 2011. Fur flew when Larry was joined by fellow former Battersea cat, Palmerston, who took up

a crucial position in the Foreign Office following years of undercover work on the streets of London. Last but not least, was Gladstone, who joined the Treasury in the summer of 2016.

Battersea’s Head of Operations, Rob Young, said: “Battersea has a great relationship with Downing Street when it comes to rehoming animals to Britain’s most famous street and it goes without saying that we would be more than happy to help our new Prime Minister find a pet.

“If we are asked to help Mr Johnson adopt a new companion, our priority will of course be to look for a dog that is comfortable living in a busy environment and could happily live alongside Chief Mouser Larry, who we rehomed to the political corridors of power almost a decade ago.”

Premier Groom – the Ultimate Groomers’ Show The annual Premier Groom competition staged at The Kennel Club Building, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire on Sunday 11th August 2019, attracted an entry of a multitude of dogs and groomers from around the UK.

T

he organisers of the UK’s premier annual grooming event, Summit Groomer Training Group and Red Cape Ltd are to be congratulated for arranging an event which was well organised and professional but with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It achieved the objective of providing the opportunity for groomers to fine tune their competition skills and also encouraging more groomers to enter the competition arena. Along with the competition, demonstrations seminars and trade stands provided something of interest for competitors and spectators, groomers and non-groomers alike.

This year competitors took up the challenge and demonstrated their skills in competing for one of the many fantastic prizes on offer with the ultimate award of Best Groomed Dog carrying a £1500 cash prize.

14 classes were judged with awards for Gold, Silver and Bronze places in each class. Additional prizes were awarded for the Best Transformation, the Robert Halliday Scissor Award and the Spectators Special Award was an opportunity for members of the audience to choose their favourite out of the Open & Champion class winners.

Best Groomed Dog (sponsored by Wahl) was selected from the Gold placed dogs from all Open and Champion classes and there were also prizes for Reserve Best Dog (sponsored

by Double K). The fantastic prizes included cash, trophies and products.

There were seminars running throughout the day covering subjects from Understanding Anatomy by Julie Harris, Animal First Aid by Sophie Bell, Essential Oils for Dogs by Jitka Krizova and EmmiPet Ultrasonic Teeth Cleaning by Joanne Angus. Grooming demonstrations were a hand strip Border Terrier by Zoe Duffy and an Australian Miniature Labradoodle by Louisa Tandy.

Trade stands added to the occasion making available the most up to date equipment and supplies for purchase as well as gift products and stands covering a range of grooming and training information. The raffle with the luxury hamper and a beautiful Standard Poodle figurine (kindly donated by Westgate Giftware) were won by delighted audience

members.

The photographer for the day was Paul Felton who patiently photographed all the competitors in all the classes before, during and after the competition. Along with natural shots and posed pictures of the groomer and dog Paul also photographed the awards ceremony at the end of the day.

Groomfest – A Real Festival of All Things Grooming The second annual Groomfest Extravaganza takes place at The Kennel Club Building, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire on Sunday 1st September 2019, has already attracted record numbers of exhibitors and visitors.

L

ast year’s show recorded over 700 groomers attending with over 50 companies represented, not bad going for the first year!

All the trade stands were set out in a booth style which added a real air of professionalism to the show. This also made the stands much easier to navigate around and allowed the stands to fill their allotted space with as much product as they needed. The companies represented ranged from grooming suppliers to insurance, sharpening, 22 | Total Grooming Magazine

shampoos, scissors, groomers wear, t-shirt printing, dog food to shop fitters.

Louisa Tandy is hosting one of the seminars on the ‘anal gland’ debate this year. She attended last year and this was what she had to say: “When I first heard about the idea behind Groomfest, I knew at once that this is the type of event that the industry is lacking - a place for Groomers to shop at their leisure without being intimidated by the thought of a grooming competition taking place and better still, an event

that was free to attend. Not only does it benefit the groomer but also the trade stands as this gives the groomer more time to shop.

Good clipping techniques developing the right skills Heidi Anderton, principal of Absolutely Animals and London School of Pet Grooming, explains best clipping techniques:

Choosing the right blade length and width Achieving your correct choice of length of blade, is essential to the required finish. To do this you will need to take into consideration the thickness of the coat, the part of the pet you are clipping and the direction that you are clipping in. Some tips: • You can measure the amount which will be left on by holding the blade parallel to the dogs’ body and viewing from the side, where the blades will cut the hair.

• 5f and shorter will leave the look smooth • 4f and longer will leave a more “fluffy” look • Start longer if you are unsure and reduce the length until you reach the desired result Dog grooming blades also come in 26 | Total Grooming Magazine

Holding the clipper and the blade correctly Hold your clipper like a big pencil!

Hold it from behind and keep your arm, wrist and hand relaxed. You can twist the clipper around in your hand to access some difficult points on the dog or slightly move it from side to side to follow the contour of the dog’s body.

Holding your clipper properly is not only important for your own health and safety but this will also have an effect on how you can feel what the clipper is doing. Is it clipping through the hair easily or is there resistance?

For example, if the coat is matted you will need to change to a shorter blade

so it can easily cut under any matting – never force a blade through a matted coat!

Clip using the correct amount of pressure Each length of blade will need to be used at a slightly different angle, and constant mild pressure to leave a uniform length on the body coat.

Remember when clipping legs which are very fragile and sensitive to the clipper, avoid using any pressure or contact with the legs. This is especially important on smaller and fine boned dogs as you will find they will object very quickly to pressure on legs.

Imagine the dog is as fragile as an egg when applying pressure to equipment.

of the coat on all breeds. Clip in long strokes, re-clipping half of each stroke using an even pressure on the blade to get an even finish.

Clipping against the coat direction On some breeds such as poodles’ feet and face it is widely known to “reverse clip” (clip against the lay of the coat).

Usually this is carried out to leave an even and tidy finish when navigating the fine bone structure. Clipping against the coat can have undesired side effects such as clipper rash or irritation to the skin. We know these can be avoided with a better choice of blade length and by keeping the blades cool and clean but………. there are other benefits which occur with reverse clipping. Used on the body, reverse clipping will leave a beautifully even length on those coats which are made up of different textures and will also eradicate clipper tram marks – especially useful on some West Highland White Terriers and some

Other good clipping techniques If you have a good eye for finish, you can use your clipper as a blender (skim blending) and as a sculpturing tool. You can use it to not only set the pattern on the dog but to blend the lengths between the shorter and longer areas of the dog. This can be achieved by clipping away from the dog in the blending area at a constant rate. You can set in the pattern very quickly using this technique, cutting down your grooming time dramatically and setting your balance of the dog. If you are not so confident to skim blend with a shorter blade, then you can change the shorter blade to an attachment comb to blend in the blending lines.

You can also use your clipper for setting in the rear and front angulation, producing the required result quickly and efficiently.

Debby Knight of the Bristles Grooming Salon and Training Centre, visits Carrie Richardson’s salon – Scruffies in Mucklestone, Shropshire.

C

arrie describes herself as Batty about Beagles, Crazy about Cockers and Potty about Pugs and together with the support of her husband John, she runs a successful grooming business which aims to help her customers care for their pets. Whether it’s a nail trim or an all over pampering, she welcomes the dogs into the Scruffies family.

At home, the Scuffies family consists of Carrie’s husband John, who is the administrator at Scruffies and was previously an IT consultant, Max, the seven year-old Springer Spaniel, Eddie, the four year-old Cocker Spaniel and their three boys – Josh, Ben and Oliver.

It salon has become a real family affair with both Carrie’s brother and father helping to put the salon together.

It was 2013 when Carrie and John started putting the idea of the business together. Carrie had previously worked in hospitality in the hotel industry before becoming a full-time mum but had always wanted to work with animals. Also, John had health issues, so whatever they decided on had to work with his health in mind. While Carrie was growing up she had always been around animals.

A German Shepherd called Cassie, that they had acquired from a rescue centre and needed regular grooming was a catalyst for the grooming business. They had always struggled to find a local groomer willing to take on large breeds. The vet had even suggested Cassie be sedated due to her nervous and anxious nature.

Carrie eager to help came armed with a plethora of brushes and combs and spent an afternoon calmly sitting on the floor brushing out Cassie. With no use of restraints or sedatives, instead

just kindness and patience, Cassie was groomed. This spurred Carrie on to look on the internet on how to groom a German Shepherd and a few weeks later repeated the process this time removing knots .

Again, Cassie was calm and Carrie felt a real sense of achievement at the result. The next step was to bath Cassie and after asking for suggestions online on how to do it, there was a suggestion she try a taster day or shadow a professional groomer to learn how to do it. Intrigued by the idea, Carrie contacted me, Debby Knight at The Bristles Dog Grooming and Training Salon and armed with a packed lunch and lots of questions she travelled to Oswestry to learn more.

After the visit Carrie was very excited and inspired about what she had learnt and this was the turning point in Carrie’s life that led her into her grooming career.

Once the decision had been made to follow the grooming path I advised her to train at Debbie Noah’s salon, Dazzles, a City and Guilds Satellite Training Centre in Wrexham.

In Spring of 2014 Carrie signed up for the training course and her City and Guilds Level 3 qualification. Over the next few months Carrie travelled back and forth to Wrexham, working hard, making new friends and discovering she had a real passion for working with animals.

John meanwhile worked on the admin side of the business, looking at logos, developing a business plan etc. After struggling to find premises local to them, they finally found somewhere suitable, in an old hayloft in Mucklestone, near Loggerheads.

In December of 2014 they signed the lease and equipped the unit with all the necessary tools for a professional grooming salon.

Carrie said: “The grooming focuses on 1 to 1 sessions with each dog, helping to reinforce a nice calm atmosphere for even the most nervous

of pets. The customers love this with many now coming back for the fourth year. The customers vary from Persian cats to a family of five Chihuahuas and even shearing pet sheep. I love it.”

Carrie is still continuing with her training and attends as many seminars as she can, including Crufts, PATS and a refresh of her animal first aid. She is aiming to do the OCN Diploma too this year following on to City and Guilds Level 4 (LCGI) at some time in the future and then potentially expanding

the business. In the medium term offering more formal paid placements or potential apprenticeship and training opportunities.

Carrie realises grooming is a real skill and like any other skill require practise, patience and dedication. It is often physically demanding yet can be incredibly rewarding. John says: “I am so proud of what Carrie has achieved over the last five years and can’t wait to see what the next five will bring.”

Reaching the Summit Groomer, Jitka Krizova, shares her summer challenge and the lessons she learned whilst undertaking the Three Peaks Challenge:

T

he Three Peaks Challenge was the hardest physical challenge I have ever done in my life. OMG!

Inspired by my friend Tasha Anderson, I booked the challenge on the 3rd of August 2019. My thoughts were that August is usually nice and warm, and it was. We were very lucky with the weather. It was sunny and warm but not too hot with a few light showers at night while climbing Scafell Pike. To be honest, at that point I didn’t really care what was falling from the

sky.

For those who don’t know, the National Three Peaks Challenge is an event in which participants attempt to climb the highest mountains of England, Scotland and Wales within 24 hours. This event is frequently used to raise money for charitable organisations and in my case, I was raising money for Vita Canis Style to Rescue. I’m happy to report I raised £840.

So during the challenge, the walkers climb each peak in turn and are driven from the foot of one mountain to the

next. According to Wikipedia, the total distance walked is estimated at 42 - 44 kilometres (26 - 27 miles) with a total ascent of 9800 feet (3000m). To be honest it felt more like a zillion km!

I prepared for the challenge by running, training at the gym, exercising at home and I thought I was pretty well prepared as I’m an active person anyway. Well... I needed to train harder.

I actually needed to go out into the mountains and train there as the road run and gym equipment does NOT prepare you for the uneven surface,

slippery rocks, and crumbling gravel. At least I know this for next time.

The first mountain we climbed was Ben Nevis (1345m) in Scotland. I could see the mountain from my B&B window and was thinking to myself… gosh, I’ll be there tomorrow.

We started the morning with a meeting at 8 am at the train station at Fort William. The mountain leaders introduced themselves, the whole process and itinerary was explained and our equipment was checked. When you sign up, you get a list of equipment you must have, like a head torch, hiking shoes, water, hat and gloves and waterproofs – as the weather in mountains can change quickly.

The coaches then took us to the bottom of the Ben Nevis and off we went. I really enjoyed Ben Nevis, the sun was shining, the view was amazing and I didn’t know how but I went up pretty fast and ended up at the top with the first group – the fast guys. I was well chuffed and thought this challenge wouldn’t be as hard as I thought. How wrong I was!!

When we got back to the bus, coffee, tea and cakes were waiting for us and after a quick change and stretching, we were heading to England to climb Scafell Pike in Lake district. The 6-7 hour journey didn’t help my muscles.

My legs became stiff, my feet began to swell and my back was hurting from sitting. I then got so angry with myself because I left my roller and my muscle pain-relieving gel in my suitcase in the trailer .

We got to Scafell Pike just before 10 pm, and it was already dark. My legs weren’t moving as easily as before but I thought I’d be able to shake it off and that with more walking they would loosen up. Another mistake… they didn’t loosen up and the walking didn’t become easier but, in actual fact, harder.

I tried to keep up with the fast guys but I couldn’t, tried to convince myself… you can do it… mind over body… one step at the time…quitters never win… winners never quit… and other mantras and self-talk of which some I can’t publish. Well, I didn’t quit. I was 36 | Total Grooming Magazine

just told to take a break and wait for the 3rd group. I gratefully accepted and I enjoyed the 10 minutes sitting in pitch black dark on the mountain, in complete silence. Tasha told me it would be magical, and it was.

I had thought that Scafell Pike would be the easiest one as it was the smallest.

Another mistake! Already tired after Ben Nevis, with no sleep, except dosing off on the bus and then walking up steep rocks in the middle of the night for 2 hours is NOT what I would call easy.

We had warm porridge and drinks waiting for us at the bottom of Scafell Pike and then and we were driven to the last (YAY!) challenge, Snowden in Wales. We got there at about 7 am.

Did I, at this point, feel like walking anywhere at all never mind climbing another mountain? NO AND NO, but off we set towards Snowden’s summit.

At about 20 minutes from the mountain top, our group was turned around as we were running out of time which was frustrating as the last bit seemed pretty flat. I was disappointed, but on the other hand, was glad it was over. At this point, even walking downhill was a challenge and I was ever so grateful to my two new friends, the faithful walking sticks, who stood by my side the whole time. I will never forget you!

The recovery after the challenge took a few days and I used everything I could to ease the muscle pain: the roller, essential oils, tuning forks, massage… and it did work I must say.

I’m so glad I did it and now, fully recovered, I know I will do it again to improve my time.

If you’d like to join me next year, that would be great!!

Here’s some advice for those who would like to do it: • If you think you’ve trained enough, think again and train harder.

• Do as much hiking as possible and get yourself comfortable on rocky roads and paths.

• Get walking sticks!

• Get a really, REALLY powerful head torch.

• Take salty and sour snacks as well as sweet ones. I was sick of sweets by the end of the challenge!

• Get a good quality camel bag. Mine broke so I was given a 2l plastic water bottle which kept falling down from my rucksack, adding to my frustration.

In conclusion... if you want to do the challenge just do it!! I don’t regret it for a second and it was one of the most incredible, unforgettable experiences!

s groomers you will no doubt get a number of dogs coming into your salon who suffer from pain and stiffness within their joints. What can we advise owners about adding supplements to diets for joint care?

The basics about joint pain and supplements which may aid relief of joint pain:

Signs of Joint Pain It can be difficult to see or discern the level of pain in pets, especially joint pain as this can sometimes flare up and settle down. If your pet or a client’s pet seems slower in the morning or evening, is limping, bunny hopping or showing stiffness in the joint, not wanting to play or go on walks like they used to, are reluctant to jump into the car or stairs, start persistently licking joints or the joint area seems swollen or swellings around the joint area, starts to show muscle loss, yelps or growls when the area is touched, these are all signs they may be suffering from some sort of joint pain.

When to use supplements Supplements can be used generally or purposely as a precaution or aid for joint problems.

You should always speak to your vet before starting supplements for your pets, however generally speaking, you can think about using supplements if your pet is elderly, has an old injury, is a breed prone to joint problems such as poodles or the dog is a working dog who are more prone to injury and sore joints due to work load.

Groomer and behaviourist, Angela Pinder of Paw Naturel shares her Asian Fusion Adventure in Kuala Lumpur:

t the end of June, I had an opportunity of attending the International Pets Icon Academy in Petaling Jing, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. There were six keen dog groomers in total including myself, that flew from different points across the UK and Switzerland. The flight was long haul 17 hours in total, with a connection at Dubai airport. We had booked a private course with our teacher Valerio Khoo, who specialises in Asian Fusion grooming but also show trims. Check out her work, she really is a master of what she does.

Our mission as a group to was to learn and perfect the Asian fusion style trims that are becoming increasingly popular: here in the UK and also a little bit of time was spent understanding the poodle show trims alongside perfecting those unruly poodle top knots.

be achieving and the points you will be trimming from.

Valerie showed us the 2 different Asian fusion muzzles – the muzzle is extremely important as it frames the face and is an extremely important aspect of the groom, to make the dog look more smiley. Those gorgeous photos that we see on forums, pintrest and from Asian groomers showing dogs with beautiful big round eyes.

Valerie explained that in Asia, the dogs

are bred to have big eyes and paired with the smaller nose which creates the perfect asian fusion muzzle, when styled corrects this creates a cute happy dog.

We learned lots of tips and tricks to perfect that smiley happy face.

We worked on model dog heads, which are actually surprisingly easy to work with, it takes away the stress of keeping the dog still, and having the dog on the table for a long period of time. This also allows you to reflect

back and take your time on your model dog head/body and to also see other peoples work.

Once we mastered the Asian fusion muzzle we started to learn the different types of head styles which included: • Princess head • Mushroom head • Unsymmetrical head • Peanut head • Low ear set • Headphone set • High ear set We worked on several different models, one once we mastered the Asian fusion muzzle we then moved onto a full body model, which allowed us to creatively execute Asian fusion style legs.

We also got to have a play around with colour and glitter, although this is something that I haven’t really had an opinion on or tried before. Its not something I had been thinking about doing, but I actually really enjoyed it.

The colour was using a specialist felt tip and blow machine and was easy to apply and manipulate using brushes and combs. I got really creative with the high ear set and decided to trim in butterfly type ears and then applied the 44 | Total Grooming Magazine

colour.

I enjoyed seeing my fellow dog groomers creations and how they trimmed, and the ideas they had for their dog models. Seeing other peoples work inspires my own creative work.

The course overall covered a great mixture of theory, theory is so important and drawings of what you are achieving, knowing the points your working with and understanding the dog and what’s its conformation is and making the dog looks its best.

After we had mastered our demo dogs on the various dog models we then got to work on real dogs. We all had an option between poodle or shih tzu.

I chose a shih tzu, because drop coated breeds are the hardest to trim, you can easily leave scissor marks and I wanted to challenge myself. I was really happy with my results, and my real life dog model was really well behaved.

I finished my grooms with the lovely Fuller Frills neck accessories.

The theory of structures of the trims and the pattern to work in has really helped me to work more effectively and timely during my grooms. The course overall for pet trims has given my work a more structured approach, pattern and allows me to manage my time more

effectively instead of faffing.

no reason. With this comes floor gliding! Older dogs can struggle to grip flooring even at a slow pace.

Excited dogs visiting a new place with other playmates on tap can be a danger to themselves until they settle and calm down.

Our previous Labrador was born with hip dysplasia so we were very aware of how important the right flooring is to their joints and stability so as much as we hated the carpet we decided to wait and make the best choice we could.

A new carpet sadly isn’t an option.

Dogs are prone to scenting, yes indoors, even if they don’t in their own home.

Then there’s puppy accidents or elderly mishaps. When there’s sometimes 6+ dogs daily in your home removing a scent so a dog’s powerful nose can’t smell it is nigh on impossible.

Real wood flooring can be slippery but it also scratches easily. Laminate can be incredibly slippery. It’s also not sealed so a good soapy mop over isn’t possible.

We then looked at luxury vinyl tiles (LVT).

These can be click style or glue down.

They are tough and sealed so you can mop them to your heart’s content.

We first tried the click type in the kitchen and hall and they did what they said on the box. Fairly scratch resistant, washable, textured so not as slippery as laminate but there was a problem.. they are thin and movement led to them splitting at the joints. In under a year we had long strips missing and more going the same way.

So began the search not only for suitable dog flooring but something that would stand up to constant footfall and movement.

A handful of reps from local flooring companies were invited round to give us their suggestions and the resounding answer given was to use the highest quality LVT -Karndean or Amtico.

Thicker, tougher, glued down but still easily removed should the need arise to alter the layout. Paying for a brand name, it was also more expensive, but offered little more to the dogs’ safety than the cheaper versions.

It looked like we were going to be stuck with the dreaded red carpet a while longer. Then fate stepped in and an ad appeared on my timeline.

At this point I should mention that we are in no way being paid to advertise, promote or recommend this flooring. We are simply so impressed by the no pressure advice and service given by the company, not to mention the effectiveness of the flooring now it is down, we want to let owners know there is another option.

A fitter came down from Cambridge to assess our present flooring as understandably we were concerned about splitting again. We were also sent some sample planks which we laid in various places to test for scratching and slipping. Impressed, we went ahead and arranged for the whole of downstairs to be done.

Coincidentally first up testing the laid floor was our youngest boarder, a five month old cockapoo & and our oldest daycare, a 12 year old westie who struggles to walk following a stroke.

Impressively the only skidding the pup has done is when landing on the mat (which didn’t move far). The westie who has weakness in her hind legs walked much the same as on concrete.

It’s early days with regard to it’s wearability so I will do an update at the end of the year but our main goal was finding an easy to clean, safe flooring that is kind not only to our own dogs’ joints but our guests’ too and I can safely say we have achieved that (& the dreaded carpet is no more!)

Brave Pet Wins Award Miniature Dachshund benefits from cutting edge surgery

ndie - a 10 year-old Miniature Dachshund – from Greasby on the Wirral has won a bravery award following her dramatic recovery from life-saving surgery by the orthopaedic team at ChesterGates Veterinary Specialists.

Her owner, Sheila Yates, noticed that Indie was wobbly and was struggling to walk and immediately took her to her local vet who identified that she was paralysed and had no pain sensation in her right back foot. She was then referred to orthopaedic specialists at ChesterGates.

Further investigation revealed that Indie was suffering from a condition known as invertebral disc disease (IVDD), which is common in dachshunds and is estimated to affect one in four of this breed. Paralysis is caused by degenerated discs herniating and compressing and bruising the

The orthopaedic surgeon, Ben Walton, explained everything really clearly to me and said that there was only a 50 per cent chance that surgery would allow her to regain the use of her back leg and there was only a 10 per cent chance of her regaining bowel and bladder control afterwards.

“We have had Indie from a puppy and she is a delightful, playful dog so we thought we would give her every chance and agreed to go-ahead with the operation to decompress the discs.”

ChesterGates’ orthopaedic veterinary surgeon, Ben Walton explains: “Indie had not one but two large disc herniations, both causing significant spinal cord compression. To give her the best chance of recovery, we 52 | Total Grooming Magazine

operated at both sites, carefully drilling away the overlying bone and removing the herniated disc material. It’s a delicate surgery, but is one we have to perform regularly for certain breeds.

Indy was remarkable in her recovery.

She is such a sweet character and was bright and affectionate the whole time she was with us.”

The surgery worked well for Indie but this was just the start as she had to undergo a course of intensive physiotherapy and a great deal of home nursing.

Owner, Sheila, commented: “Indie initially had a catheter in but once that was taken out she had a nappy. I had to do lots of small exercises with her and found lots of ways using treats to distract her while I did cycling movements with her leg. I also put up a temporary bed so I could stay downstairs with her.

“In addition, she had a great deal of physio at ChesterGates in the treadmill and hydrotherapy. Two weeks after returning home, she had her first dry night and she has just continued to improve since then and slowly started to use her back leg. Some weeks later, she is using her leg a lot now and can even run. She’s still wobbly but is back to her independent, happy self.

“The team at ChesterGates have been amazing. The communication was excellent throughout – explaining everything in layman’s terms. I can’t speak highly enough of them.”

An Essential Guide to VAT for Beginners Tax preparation specialist povides beginners guide for salon VAT rookies:

vAT is seen as one of the most confusing taxes for both small businesses and consumers in general. Tax preparation specialist and director of DSR Tax Claims Ltd, David Redfern, has provided a handy beginner’s guide to VAT to bring clarity to business confusion surrounding the business tax charge.

VAT, or Value Added Tax, is a business tax charged on certain goods and services. VAT-registered businesses are obliged to charge VAT on their business sales of good and services, as well as when hiring or loaning goods, selling business assets and when making commission payments.

Redfern stated “These are known as taxable supplies and a business which is registered for VAT is required to charge the relevant rate of VAT on these taxable supplies.

However, you cannot charge VAT on your goods and services if you aren’t registered for VAT with HMRC. While most taxable supplies are to be expected, there are a few which may come as a surprise - for example, VAT is still chargeable on goods which aren’t sold for cash but are bartered or partexchanged instead. Items which are sold to employees are also classed as a taxable supply and must be subject to VAT if your business is registered for VAT”. Businesses which are registered for VAT must charge VAT on their taxable goods and services and are obliged to send a VAT return to HMRC on a quarterly basis.

Most taxable goods and services are taxed at the standard rate of VAT, which is currently 20%. The standard

rate has remained at 20% since April 2011, although historically it used to change each April. Certain goods and services, such as child car seats and domestic fuel, are chargeable at a reduced rate of 5% while certain goods and services are classed as zero-rated.

Redfern explained “Goods and services which are classed as zero-rated must still be reported on in your VAT return but you must charge a zero rate of VAT on them. Examples of zero-rated goods are children’s clothing and shoes as well as motorcycle helmets. Goods exported to non-EU countries are also zero-rated. In addition, there are certain goods and services which are exempt from VAT, such as medical and care services, education and vocational services as well as burial and cremation services. These don’t need to be reported on for VAT purposes although you should still record them in your general business records”. Goods and services provided to charities can benefit from a reduced rate of VAT. Businesses are required to register for VAT if they have a VAT-taxable turnover of £85,000 or more. A

business calculates its VAT-taxable turnover as the total value of all the goods and services it sells which are not VAT exempt. Redfern added “Unlike other taxes, this is a rolling 12-month threshold, not a fixed period such as a tax year or accounting period. This means that if you believe your turnover is close to the threshold, you need to keep a close eye on it and register for VAT when it exceeds the £85,000 threshold. You can register for VAT voluntarily even if your business is below the threshold if you believe it will be advantageous to your business but you won’t be required to do so.

Once registered you must charge VAT on your non-exempt goods and services”. Once registered, a business will be required to submit a VAT return to HMRC every 3 months, reporting on their total sales and purchases, how much VAT the business owes and how much it can reclaim on business purchases. Businesses must submit a return even when there is no VAT to pay or reclaim. A Final VAT return will be due if you cancel your VAT registration.

t is widely acknowledged that pets can positively benefit the well-being of elderly owners. For many elderly people living on their own, their pets are their reason for living.

They are constant companions – on hand 24 hours a day, every day, comforting, loving and protecting their owners – not only from outside threats, but also offering the more subtle form of protection from loneliness and despair.

Pets are warm and intensely loyal.

They do not criticise, they boost morale, they help reduce stress by providing emotional security, and they help to provide a fixed routine. Pets have the ability to bring happiness and laughter and lift depression.

Communication with other people is often easier when a pet is present for reassurance.

The special relationship between owner and pet adds incalculably to the quality of life, but all the pleasures and benefits can be completely neutralised by intense anxiety regarding the fate of their devoted companion should the owner die, fall ill, or have to move to residential accommodation. If an ‘old faithful’ dies, elderly owners are often very reluctant to have another pet for these reasons, and life for them loses much of its warmth, light and purpose.

Cinnamon trust volunteers visited daily to take Billy and Jamie for their walks so they could remain with their mum who loved and needed them so much. We were privileged to be able to give Norah the peace of mind needed by promising to care for Billie and Jamie for life when she passed away.

Inseparable companions, they came to Poldarves Sanctuary when Billy was 13 and Jamie was 7. By the time Billy died two years later, Jamie had new friends to help him through – he’s still very happy and much loved.

Jack Although Jack had a sad start in life – he was found abandoned at the side of a road at around 10 months old - he subsequently enjoyed four wonderful years with his adopter – an elderly gentleman who simply adored him. But then he passed away and Jack moved on to a new family.

They said: “We had been waiting for a little while for the right dog to come along, as with three fairly young

children and a cat in the house already, it was going to take a special dog to fit into the mix. When we heard about Jack we were so excited, but somehow we managed to keep it from everyone until the night before his arrival – noone slept much that night! I explained to the children that Jack might be a bit scared or worried when he first arrived, and may not want us to touch him – ‘let him come to you when he’s ready’, and when the transport car pulled up outside, they all sat on the sofa eagerly waiting for him to be brought in. Next thing, in trots Jack with a tennis ball (his pride and joy) in his mouth, tail wagging, ready to play! He made himself at home straight away, choosing the new bed we had bought him over the one he came with – he seemed to instinctively know that we were his new family, and it was almost as if he was consciously making a new start. I don’t think he could believe that he had so many people all falling over themselves to throw his ball for him, and to snuggle up on the sofa with when he was

tired of playing! This photo of him and the children was taken literally a few minutes after he arrived – he absolutely adores them, and the feeling is definitely mutual!

“Jack has adapted so well to life in a busy family home, and as a member of the Cinnamon Trust staff, I am lucky enough to be able to bring him to work with me in the office - he sleeps all morning in his bed under my desk, but is quick to remind me when 12 o’clock comes and it’s time for walkies! He was very unimpressed when the clocks went back and sat and grumbled at me from 11 o’clock each day for almost a fortnight, until he got used to the ‘new’ routine!

Jack has changed our lives so much – we enjoyed being outdoors before, but in the eight months we have had him, we have found ourselves exploring so many new places, and are all fitter and healthier as a result. We are so thankful for him and couldn’t love him more!”

The Cinnamon Trust also provides long term care for pets whose owners have died or moved to residential accommodation which will not accept pets. Arrangements are made between owners and the Trust well in advance, so owners do have peace of mind

in the knowledge that their beloved companion will have a safe and happy future. Emergency cards are available on request.

When a pet is in the Trust’s care either short term or long term because the owner is in care, the owner is kept in touch with visits, if possible, or regular photos and letters.
