New Veterinary Training Centre

hesterGates Veterinary Specialists in Chester has established a new Veterinary Training Centre to educate student veterinary nurses and veterinary care assistants. This follows the awarding of funding from The Education and Skills Funding Agency to run Level 3 Diploma in

Veterinary Nursing and Level 2 diploma for Veterinary Care Assistants. This will be of one of just a few private education facilities in the UK and is the first within CVS group. ChesterGates Veterinary Training centre has an experienced team of tutors and support staff to personally support each individual student. Students will also benefit from being part of ChesterGates Veterinary Specialists, a large multi-specialist led hospital based in Chester.
The school has been successfully running the City and guilds Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing as a day release course since 2009. In the last year, the facility successfully ran Level 2 Veterinary Care Assistant diploma for the first time as a blended learning course. et entrepreneurs launch ‘gamechanging’ dog safety gate. Having established successful pet related businesses, pet entrepreneur couple, Peter and Julie Maxted, are now set for their third pet related business. Animal safety in their businesses has always been at the forefront of their thinking and in particular, dog safety and they have now set up The Dog-G8 Company. The couple felt it was becoming apparent there was a massive safety issue for both the dogs and the callers to the home or places of work. The flash point being every time the front was door opened. He therefore decided to develop his own safety gate. After many months of in-depth development, and also working with a Peterborough-based engineering company, The Dog-G8 was born. Battersea is encouraging people to look beyond a pet’s pedigree and embrace its personality

eading animal charity Battersea is warning that rescue dogs and cats are being overlooked due to the public’s preoccupation with fashionable breeds. Launching a ground-breaking new campaign, ‘Rescue is Our Favourite Breed’, to celebrate the inimitable characters and quirks of rescue dogs and cats, the charity is encouraging animal lovers to always think rescue first when it comes to finding their new pet, even if it may mean waiting a little longer to find the perfect match. Every year, 250,000 animals are brought to rescue centres around the UK for all kinds of reasons. Most are much loved pets that through no fault of their own find themselves without a home. They may be an odd mix of breeds, they may not look perfect, but they have so much to give. Battersea’s research shows that whilst 92% of people say they believe rescue is the right thing to do , when the time comes to get a new pet, many choose to go online and search for a specific breed instead. In the last 12 months there have been on average 165,000 monthly searches online for ‘French Bulldogs’ . A fifth of people who say they wouldn’t consider rescue say they can’t get the

type of breed they want from a rescue centre and over half (52%) say the animals in rescue centres often have health or behavioural problems, and you don’t know their full history . Claire Horton, Battersea’s Chief Executive, says; “Even though one in four dogs and cats are rescues , you’re still more likely to hear about French Bulldogs, or Labradors being the nation’s favourite pets. Our preoccupation with breed is fuelling a ruthless pet trade based on looks alone – one that can sadly put profit before animal welfare.” “Battersea is setting out to increase the visibility of rescue animals, to show they’re more common than you think, and are in homes across the nation. They’re the most rewarding, responsible choice for a pet, and we’re hoping to bring them front of mind – to get all generations of animal lovers to think rescue first.” To encourage potential pet owners to be more open to rescue pets and look beyond certain breeds, Battersea has removed breed filters from its own online animal galleries. Initial tests have shown that when visitors to the site were not given the option to filter by
breed, they viewed more animal profiles, and a higher percentage of them went on to apply to rehome a dog or cat. Last year Battersea rehomed 2,301 dogs and 2,140 cats. The charity has seen a notable reduction in rehoming over recent years as more people search online for fashionable breeds and are influenced by what they see on social media. They believe ‘Rescue Is Our Favourite Breed’ will help break down some of the misconceptions people have about rescue animals, encouraging them to see rescue as desirable and a badge of honour. Is it part of a groomer’s job to get bitten?
Heidi Anderton, principal of Absolutely Animals and London School of Pet Grooming, is an experienced industry expert as well as a previous member of Groom Team England and a founder member of the British Isles Grooming Association (BIGA). In this issue she is looking at the issue of pet groomers’ well-being.

O
ver the past few years, there’s been a worrying and obvious increase in groomers being bitten by customers’ dogs. There are some horrendous bite injuries appearing on social media from across the UK in the grooming industry. The most concerning bites to me are the injuries I see on groomers’ faces; bites on noses, lips and cheeks are very shocking and totally avoidable. I have seen injuries on groomers’ faces requiring micro-surgery with injuries that will scar for life. There will also be emotional scars that will likely even put the groomer off the job in the future. I have often heard…. It’s your job too be bitten - isn’t it? It’s a hazard of the job isn’t it? You must expect to be bitten if you are a dog groomer? ABSOLUTELY NOT! It is NOT part of the job; it is totally avoidable!

Correct use of handling aids can help keep groomers safe
You must make your health and safety a priority. You can start by following these easy steps. 1. Ask about the behaviour of the dog when the client makes the booking. This is your first chance
to change the introduction of the dog into your care and put safety precautions in place. You can use this opportunity to ask for the dog to come muzzled, you could ask the owner to stay for reassurance and you could make an appointment

at a quiet time. The introduction to your care can change everything, until you have got to know the dog and won its trust. 2. On introduction of the dog, keep checking the facial signs and the body signals. Ask the owner to bring the dog into the salon and then leave the dog in your care. This is much better, than dragging the dog away. When dogs become frightened, they are more likely to bite. 3. Don’t take a small dog from the arms of the client, especially if the dog is nervous and use a slip lead on a large dog for much more communication and control. 4. Use all handling aids available to you, including the owner and another groomer friend. 5. Use a groomers’ helper with every dog and ensure the scope of the dog’s mouth is at least a foot from your face, at all times. Never chance a bite. 6. Do not ever put your face near a customers’ dog’s face. You don’t know this dog and you are in its personal space; some dogs don’t like this and may bite. 7. Always reassure dogs, stop if they are objecting and use an alternative method. Use your handling aids appropriately, this will reduce any risk of a bite.
Restraint free Grooming There is often talk on restraint free grooming which would be great in an ideal world, but this can have a detrimental effect to the long-term physical wellbeing of the groomer when they are consistently having to keep the dog in place for safe grooming to occur. Continually using your hands for moving a dog can also put you at risk of a bite. Handling Aids are essential to give safe boundaries and guidance for dogs being groomed, much like a lead and collar, they can also be used in conjunction with one another, however care should always be taken for them never to be overused or over tight. Handling aids can improve the groomers’ physical and emotional wellbeing in various ways. Leads and collars – The handler can move the dogs safely and securely, restricting the boundary of the dog and helping to avoid unnecessary bending or weight lifting for the groomer, therefore less worry of the dog being in danger as they have a boundary. Neck straps and extensions – These are essential handling aids to keep the dog safely on the table and avoid the groomer having to keep lowering and raising the groomers’ arm or h/bar to the required position. With a groomer’s helper attached, the neck strap will never rest on the oesophagus, which often scares the dog. Groomer’s helpers - The starter kit is worth every penny and comes with a video showing you how to use it correctly and safely. Holding chin hairs on dogs is common in the industry, it is a dubious practice to use every day and is never needed when using a groomer’s helper. Essential Clipper Maintenance Advice
It’s really important to make sure your clippers are in good working order. These are the tools of your trade, and not maintaining them properly could lose you money in the long run, from losing speed and making your grooming slower to having to replace whole parts, including the motor, which can be costly!
M
ake sure your clipper is properly cleaned every day. Remove all the hair from the blades and the blade drive. You can either do this with the supplied brush or a toothbrush. If hair continues to build up, it will travel down inside the clipper and begin to stop the mechanism from working properly, making it slower or jamming it entirely. Clean your blade after use and oil frequently. The less friction on the blade, the more easily the clipper can cut. To oil your blade, point the clipper downward with the blade horizontal. Then put a drop of oil on either side of the blade, where the top and bottom blades meet. You can also put one drop in the middle of where the blades meet for extra lubrication if you wish. To clean your blade, remove as much hair as you can with a brush. Use a blade wash and submerge your blades. Then wipe off well to ensure the blade does not rust. Make sure your blade is oiled before storage. Check for nicks, cuts and other cable issues before you work. Any issues could lead to an electric shock, so it’s better to be safe! Check the blade drive, hinge and lock weekly. You’ll need to take off the blade and the drive cap, in some cases this will include the casing. Make sure 26 | Total Grooming Magazine

no parts are rusty, missing or worn and that the blade is snapping on correctly, if the clipper has a snap-on mechanism. Check your blades! Make sure they aren’t rusty, have free movement of the blade without sticking and don’t have any broken teeth. If in doubt, ask. If you notice any change in the sound, speed or
performance of the clipper and you have checked the blade, the blade drive, hinge and lock for any issues, it’s time to call in the professionals. Have your clipper serviced yearly by a professional. Remember to always have a spare clipper you can use while it’s being serviced, and just in case anything goes wrong.

atie Rourke Dowding’s career in dogs started back in 1988 when she attended her first dog training classes at Cranbourne Dog Training School and became seriously bitten by the training bug. She attended training camps with Jack and Wendy Volhard (Top Dog Training) at various venues all over the USA and swiftly rose through the ranks to become a Senior Instructor at the school. She knew she’d reached the point where she could ‘ditch the day-job’ and become a full-time dog trainer when she was able to train her (human) boss to make a cup of tea just on the verbal cue of “Filing”. Katie continued to take classes and train with Cranbourne until 1998, but after a successful year of clicker training with her private clients Katie opened an entirely new dog training school and The Canine Film Academy was born. “We trained dogs to do the same tricks as you saw on the TV and in films, back in 1998 this was radical and brand new and the clients loved

it”. Amongst other jobs, Katie trained the dog that played the part of Sirius Black in Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban – who was transformed though film wizardry into the dog that pulls Ron Weasley under the Whomping Willow. “Grooming never really entered my mind,” says Katie, “until I got my first Standard Poodle in 2003.” As a puppy, Flossy was trimmed by Anita 28 | Total Grooming Magazine

She was charged £150 for the last visit (from Puppy Pants into full continental) and was horrified that evening when giant sores and welts appeared all over the closely clipped areas of Flossy’s body. grooming swiftly became an all consuming obsession! A visit to the Richmond Dog Show, in the days when it was still held at Ascot Racecourse, furnished her with all the items she thought she was going to need to set up a small grooming parlour at Smoothfield Farm where she was operating from and at the same time she purchased every video she could find on the art of Dog Grooming. At that time there was no YouTube Videos or DVDs so having paid a small fortune for the video, you literally had to wind the tape back and play it over and over again. The result is that whenever she baths a dog today she still hears Anita Bax’s voice ringing in her ears, “It’s probably the only bath its going to get in the next six weeks – so make it count!” At the end of 2003 Katie came to an unexpected crossroads in her career. She became pregnant, a huge surprise having been told by several doctors she’d not be able to have a child and at about the same time, her right-handwoman suddenly got recalled to the USA as her husband’s nine-year stint came to a close. “At the time, I felt like my life was ending” says Katie. “After signing a five year contract, Smoothfield was sold from under our feet by an outrageous landlord, I suddenly had 96 private lessons to deliver, no staff who

could help and nowhere to continue the training courses already sold and paid for… and I was totally exhausted all the time, I didn’t realise I was pregnant until Christmas that year, by which time I was nearly 4 months gone!” Without her sidekick or a venue, Katie had no option but to return home to her 3 bed semi in Ascot. She set up a grooming table in the living room and Centre Stage Dog Grooming was born. She groomed and taught private dog training lessons until the day before her son was born in August 2004 and was back at work two days later. “Looking back, those times were tough” she says. Katie continued to learn as much as she could about her new craft. She has always been totally driven if the subject interests her. Her husband, Steve, converted the garage into a grooming parlour and the grooming client list started growing. “It was easier to cope with the baby and grooming clients than it was with the baby and training clients,” Katie says, “so it was natural that eventually I found myself solely grooming for a living.” However, having come from the commercial IT world and then into the Dog Training world where £50 per hour was the expected MINIMUM rate for one-toone training, Katie was HORRIFIED
at how much groomers were expected to put up with for such little financial return. In 2014 she met Angela and Ian Cayley at Mastergroom where she instantly signed up for the ICMG programme. “I didn’t know what I didn’t know,” says Katie, “and terrifying as it was, I wanted to find out where my skills were lacking so I could continue to grow as a groomer.” She was delighted to pass the SDC (the early exams) later that year and continued studying towards the ICMG qualification. However, in 2015, she was bitten by a bug of a different sort and, now carrying a large burden of Borrelia Bacteria (which causes Lyme Disease) in her system disaster struck. “There were days when even getting out of bed seemed too much to bear. I had to radically rethink how I was going to continue working full time and being able to be a fulltime mother to my two children. I sat down and looked at the books and worked out where the profit was in the business. . Every dog over 15Kgs went immediately as I was struggling to lift them safely, I then ruthlessly sacked every other client that wasn’t turning a decent profit. The OAY’s were ditched as were the TAY’s (twice a years). Handstripping
became a thing of the past. Cheap shampoos went out the window – I could only tolerate 100% pure nonsynthetic ingredients and my pricing was radically overhauled to reflect the new changes. I spent many evenings working out how much it cost me to stand in front of my grooming table for 1 hour after all the costs and overheads were taken into consideration, starting with Jackie Grimmetts formula, which I tweaked, built into a workable spreadsheet, put in some of the tax stuff applicable to me as a single groomer and wahoo, the first Hourly Rate Calculator was born. NOW I am able to throw all sorts of financial ideas at it and it will tell me how much my hourly rate needs to be.” With all these new ideas in place, her work load significantly reduced and her income appreciably higher Katie found had the energy and resources to resume her studies and she passed the Masters paper for her ICMG qualification in 2017. “Angela and Ian are just awesome. They quietly encouraged me to keep going and backed off when they knew I was struggling. They really are the best educators in the business.”

The seminar therefore covers all the tips and methods that capture these clients and make your grooming business truly successful. “Tracey Clarke and Philippa Chadwick
invited me to do my first seminar in Aldershot and its really gone from strength to strength! Getting a nomination for Speaker of the Year in 2019 was a phenomenal boost and one of the highlights of my career.” “The internet has really changed things,” Katie continues, “I saw post after post about groomers with bad backs and knowing that my invention could prevent so much of that was killing me! I really wanted to bring my Backdrop idea to the marketplace but had no time to work out how to do it. The one I use at home is Built In (thanks to my wizz of a husband) so it took nearly 5 years to come up with something that does the job just as well BUT is portable, postable and reasonably priced”. Backdrops have been available since October last year. “Steve is as much a whizz on the sewing machine as he is with a drill, saw and nails” says Katie, “but now we live wading through material and thread off cuts which is highly preferable to sawdust and screws!! The design has been upgraded several times since the original conception and we’ll continue to improve it until we reach perfection!” “This industry is addictive and I’m utterly passionate about it.”

ith the holiday season approaching many of us will be cleaning our salons and homes in preparation for family and visitors as well as a busy trading season at the salon. So it is really important to know what is safe to use around dogs in terms of both dietary and household dangers. What is a poison? A poison is a substance, which when introduced to an organism, is capable of producing an unwanted effect. It is not something that is deadly all the time, however dogs are individuals and react to different things differently just like us. One substance may not affect one but msybe deadly to the other or cause an upset tummy in one or a skin complaint in the other. As we gather gifts and food for the busy season you may be surprised at what is harmful for dogs, some foods which we humans love and think of as healthy even are highly toxic to dogs as well as simple cleaning products and household plants!
Let’s start with food The list is very long but here are a few common food stuffs that may be toxic to your dogs; Avocado: Avocados are poisonous to dogs as they contain persin, persin is highly toxic and can act as a dog poison, causing vomiting and diarrhoea. Grapes and raisins are toxic to dogs, scientist are still unsure of the reason behind their toxicity. These fruits can induce kidney failure in dogs. Even a small number may cause problems in 42 | Total Grooming Magazine
some dogs and high volumes can be fatal. Xylitol is a sweetener found in many human and dog products, including sugar-free gum and candy. It causes a rapid drop in blood sugar in dogs which can result in seizures and liver failure in some dogs. Onions are toxic to dogs for those of you who give your dog gravy granules this often is made from onion and garlic powder so read the labels. Onions kill canine blood cells and resulting in Heinz Body Anaemia which can be lifethreatening. Onion powder in food is enough to do this, so again attention to ingredients is crucial. Garlic isn’t as dangerous as onions, and small amounts may even appear in some dog foods, but in a larger quantity, it’s just as damaging for the same reasons. Alcohol can cause the same liver and kidney damage as it does to humans. It
can also cause acidosis in dogs which may cause cardiac arrest. Chocolate and coco products contain substances called methylxanthines that can cause vomiting in small doses, and death if ingested in larger quantities. Darker chocolate contains more methylxanthines than milk chocolate. Just half an ounce of baking chocolate can be fatal to a smaller dog. Coffee and caffeine have similarly dangerous chemicals to methylxanthines and result in vomiting and can be fatal in dogs. Rawhide dog chews can host bacteria like Salmonella, which isn’t good for either of you. Other foods you should keep away from your pet include tomatoes, mushrooms and most seeds and nuts as they tend to be hard to digest causing tummy upsets and nausea however not all are toxic. and salon with plants and foliage. This may seem like an “animal friendly” type of thing to do, however be aware that many plants are highly toxic and dogs do like to chew plants!
Plants Azaleas and rhododendrons are pretty flowering plants but contain toxins that may cause vomiting, diarrhoea, coma, and potentially even death. Tulips and daffodils bulbs may cause serious stomach problems, difficulty breathing, and increased heart rate, they can even cause seizures in dogs. Eating just a few seeds of Sago palms may be enough to cause vomiting, seizures, and liver failure. Also with plants is Potpourri, as this contains many plants, bulbs, seeds and also essential oils. Some may contain chemicals which may trigger an environmental allergy resulting in skin conditions, itchy skin and swollen areas.
Cleaning and Air fresheners Air Fresheners, heavy scented candles and vac fresh products may cause harm to your pets due to chemicals used causing environmental allergies or irritation to pets’ skin and or respiratory tract. If you have a dog which suffers from allergies, sensitive skin or unknown reasons behind paw licking, biting skin, you may want to check your household smellies and give them a miss for a while! A big part of having an animal related business is cleaning, so using products that are non-toxic but also clean is vital. So again, keep an eye on the ingredients, many products do not list active ingredients and pet products are not legally made to list what they contain (including foods). I would avoid anything that doesn’t list the ingredients. Some of these may seem obvious but keep all cleaning products away from pets, store in plastic of air tight containers and if you use bleach to clean your salon, make sure to rinse very well after. You can buy kennel safe cleaners which kill germs and are less toxic for dog’s skin, they will still be harmful if 44 | Total Grooming Magazine
digested. This also goes for window cleaning products, filter cleaners and even detergent used to wash towels and laundry.
So what can you use in the salon Essential oils can be used (diluted) in shampoos, conditioners and as an air freshener, however please make sure the essence you use is pet friendly, many hold beneficial properties and act as natural flea deterents. Windows can be cleaned using vinegar and newspaper, this is an old fashioned way of cleaning windows and is actually very affective and cuts through grease! A good floor cleaner is something such as F10 or Parvo-Virucide which kill most canine bacteria such as parvo and kennel cough, most vet grade sterilizers can be used to clean utensils and bowls as well.
Other common toxins Insecticides - yes this includes flea and tick killers (spot on and flea collars included!) They are a poison and toxic to all animals. Rodenticides use attractants that might also intrigue your canine companion, and the anticoagulants or phosphorus side effects meant to kill rats can have devastating consequences for your dog. They usually work by thinning the blood causing rapid internal bleeding which is hard to detect / treat in time. Fertilizer contain a cocktail of phosphorus and nitrogen insect and
weed problems, many mulch fertilizers contain cocoa mulch which combines the dangers of fertilizer and chocolate. Antifreeze is commonly digested. Antifreeze smells so sweet dogs tend to try and lick it, however it is highly toxic and often leads to death. Keep your first aid / medical box well out of the way of dogs, even Psoriasis creams can be toxic to them. Human Psoriasis creams often contain vitamin D derivatives which are extremely toxic to dogs, these drugs enhance the resorption of calcium from the bone and increase the absorption of calcium from the gut. This causes hypercalcaemia; an excess of calcium in the blood. This causes muscle spasms, fits, heart problems, kidney failure and can cause the gut and lungs to become calcified.
What do you do if you think your dog has been poisoned? You must consult your local veterinary practice immediately, do not wait and see. Do not make your dog sick yourself. Consult your vet and they will advise you on what to do. You should have to hand (if possible); What poison you think your dog has been exposed, How much they may have been exposed to and When your dog was exposed to the poison. If your dog has been unwell, and if so, what clinical effects have been seen. Make sure that you take any relevant packaging, or a sample of the poison or plant to help the vets treat your dog fast.

We hear about it and talk about it, but how do we define mental health? Good mental health is psychological well-being, and the absence of a mental disorder. Simply put, it’s the ability to enjoy life and create a balance between activities and efforts in order to achieve mental resilience. It also means the ability to express emotions and adapt to a range of demands. These days we have more knowledge than ever before when it comes to the mental health of our four legged friends.
Questions we can consider... • Are they enjoying life? • Are they able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult situations? • Can they adapt to different situations? One of the causes for mental health issues is not receiving enough interaction. The issues can manifest themselves in destructive behaviour, obsessive compulsive behaviour, anxiety, aggression, fear and depression. If you observe this behaviour in your dog or your clients’ dogs, I would recommend talking to a dog behaviourist. Let’s look at... Stress and Anxiety To choose the right approach, we need to understand the difference between stress and anxiety. Stress is a response to a specific stressor, like fireworks, a car journey or a visit to the vet. Anxiety, on the other hand, has no identifiable root and sometimes we have to dig deep to find the cause (which is not always successful). Stress typically goes away when the stressor disappears whereas anxiety tends to stick around for longer and is more difficult to treat. In the case of anxiety, Comfort Blend works very well in many cases. This synergetic blend of essential oils can be used for dogs suffering from separation anxiety as well as distress, sadness, homesickness or having difficulty adjusting to unfamiliar circumstances. This is an anxiety-related disorder in which dogs engage in repetitive and often selfdestructive behaviour, for example, excessive licking. To calm themselves down, dogs often resort to repetitive behaviour and licking (being sensory stimulation) can distract them from their internal stress. These dogs may have recently experienced a great deal of stress or may even have a history of abuse.

Scans for Dachshunds to Guard Against IVDD The charitable group Dachshund IVDD UK is dedicated to reducing the number of Dachshunds being bred who may be susceptible to intervertebral disk disease and is offering a subsidised screening programme for bitches of breeding age.

ixie - a five year-old Miniature Dachshund – from Gwespyr, Holywell has just undergone life-saving surgery for IVDD and her owners, Jane and Will Mellor are urging other Dachshund owners to secure a scan. Jane and Will were desperately concerned when their little dog went ‘off her legs’ in the spring. They visited their local veterinary practice who later referred her to ChesterGates Veterinary Specialists. Further investigation revealed that Dixie was suffering from IVDD – intervertebral disk disease which is sadly common in Dachshunds, affecting 1 in 4. This involved major surgery to remove disc material, followed by extensive physiotherapy. Jane said: “Poor Dixie was in a great deal of pain, but once we were referred to ChesterGates the team sprang into action. Dixie had surgery the next day and spent two nights in hospital. The neurosurgeon, Lorena Martinez, explained everything really clearly to me and the nursing team kept us updated on her progress 24/7. “Dixie has always been a very feisty and playful dog and incredibly active, so I was devastated when she collapsed.” When Dixie returned home, Jane stepped up and took over a lot of the physio herself, she even learned how to express Dixie’s bladder. Thankfully, Dixie is on the road to 50 | Total Grooming Magazine

recovery now and is up and about. Jane also joined the IVDD UK group and got in touch with Charlotte Baldwin from Dedicated To Dachshunds With IVDD UK, who have kindly loaned her a special stroller and supportive lead and gave lots of help and support. Jane and Will would like to help raise awareness of this terrible disease, especially as the breed is more popular than ever and a lot more are being bred purely for monetary purposes by unscrupulous breeders. The surgery worked well for Dixie but this was just the start as she had to undergo a course of intensive physiotherapy and a great deal of home nursing. Jane said: “The team at ChesterGates have been amazing. The communication was excellent throughout – explaining everything in layman’s terms. I can’t

speak highly enough of them.” In recognition of her bravery in coping with such adversity, the ChesterGates’ team awarded Dixie their Pet of the Month title. In addition, the show will have a strongly education focused theme, with dozens of short, bite-sized seminars across four seminar rooms being planned, aimed at boosting business and providing technical insight. The Pet Industry Awards will take place on Sunday 26 April at a lavish black-tie dinner next door to the exhibition hall, complete with entertainment and live music. Open to all types of pet business, the Pet Industry Awards provide fantastic recognition for businesses and their staff and are a great showcase for the best the pet industry has to offer. The British Dog Grooming Championship takes place on Sunday 26 April to determine the 2020 Groomer of the Year, with classes aimed dog groomers of all abilities. Tips for keeping pets safe in the salon and at home:

s the fireworks season seems to start earlier and may often continue until after the new year, now is the time to start thinking about how to help noise phobic and anxious dogs get through. Fireworks may look very pretty, but many dogs find the flashing lights and loud noises very frightening. There are tips that you can use on the night itself to help keep your dog calm. If you are aware of your dog or a dog in your care having negative reactions towards fireworks, ensure you speak to your vet for further advice. Young dogs that have yet to experience fireworks may really benefit from some preparation to help them to gradually become desensitised to loud noises and associate the noises with something positive rather than something scary.
Ali Taylor, Head of Canine Behaviour and Training at Battersea advises: “Making changes to your dog’s routine in advance may help your dog be more prepared for when fireworks are being let off. Small changes could mean that 54 | Total Grooming Magazine
your dog doesn’t associate loud noises or flashing lights with the fireworks directly, and to help them stay calmer on the night.” “Of course, there are things that you can do on the evening of fireworks night to help a nervous dog. Timing your dog’s walks for when fireworks aren’t being let off, ensuring your curtains are drawn, leaving lights on in the evenings and playing music or tv will all help to buffer the noise and sight of fireworks.” “If you have a young dog who hasn’t experienced fireworks previously get them used to the sounds gradually by playing audio recordings of fireworks at a very low volume whilst engaging in fun activities with your dog such as a bit of training, or toy play. You can gradually increase the volume over time so that they become accustomed to it, if they show any signs of anxiety stop immediately and either go back a few steps of speak to your vet or a behaviourist.” “If you already know that your dog is scared of fireworks it’s best to try and desensitise them to the noises and sounds as far in advance as possible
as this can take months of regular training. It’s also best to ensure you are prepared by speaking to your vet or a behaviourist and ensuring that you have the right support in advance of the night.” “Dogs may choose to hide if they are worried by the fireworks, so set up a cosy den area and start to encourage your dog to choose to settle in there use it by hiding some tasty treats.”
Ali’s top tips • Try and introduce changes as far in advance as possible to make the dog more prepared. • No matter how good your dog is with fireworks, it’s never advisable to take them to a display.
How you can keep your dog or cat calm this Bonfire Night: • Make sure your pet is microchipped and their details are up to date Animals can flee when they get scared. If your pet does manage to run away from home while fireworks are going off, you can easily be reunited if

they’re microchipped and their chip details are up to date. It’s also a legal requirement for all dogs to be microchipped. • Avoid letting your pet outdoors when fireworks are likely to go off. By keeping your pet indoors when fireworks are going off, it prevents them being caught out and from getting scared if they’re outside. Make sure you take your dog for a nice long walk before dark and provide litter trays for your cat. • Create a ‘safe space’ inside your home or salon. If your pet is scared, they may take comfort in hiding away. If your dog is used to being in a crate, cover it and leave it open with blankets inside, or
alternatively a table draped with a blanket can make a great retreat. • For cats, if they normally hide in a specific place, make sure they have access and encourage them to use it with treats and toys. A box lined with blankets and with the opening slightly covered is ideal. • Don’t confine your pet to just one room. If your dog or cat becomes stressed, they may hurt themselves trying to get out, so allow them easy access to all safe areas of the house. • Some animals may also be most comfortable curled up in their usual spot with you; let them do whatever suits them the best. • Keep the TV or radio on. To reduce the sudden impact of the sound of fireworks, keep the TV or radio on. Playing certain types of music that don’t have a repetitive beat or any sudden loud noises, like classical music or reggae, can be very calming for pets. • Keep your pet distracted with a treat. A new toy or treat can be a great way to distract your dog or cat from the noise. For cats, try something with catnip to keep them occupied, and for dogs try a long-lasting chew toy or a Kong packed with tasty treats. • Act normally. Animals are very perceptive creatures,

and if they notice you behaving strangely (like following them around and fussing over them) they’ll sense that something is wrong. If you behave normally, it will show them that the fireworks are nothing to worry about and it may help decrease their anxiety. • Avoid picking up cats If your cat is distressed, avoid picking them up to comfort them, as this could make them more stressed and provoke aggression. Cats also take a long time to calm down, so leave them until morning to settle before interacting with them again. • Keep your curtains closed. It may not just be the sound of fireworks that stresses your pet -the flashes can worry them too. It’s important to make sure curtains are closed and windows are covered to block out any sudden bursts of light. • If the pet is still stressed by fireworks following this advice, consider talking to your vet. A vet may be able to provide some medication to help reduce your pet’s anxiety. Bear in mind that any medicinal treatment should always be accompanied by a behaviour management plan and should only be used as a last resort.
