Everything is Pawsome! First dogs arrive at York’s Nestlé House Nestlé, the world’s biggest food and drink producer, and one of York’s largest employers, welcomed the first dogs into its Nestlé House offices in York as part of their Pets at Work (PaW) scheme. Nestlé House York becomes Nestlé’s fifth pet friendly office site in the UK & Ireland, main offices in Gatwick and Dublin have been successfully part of the scheme since 2015. Paul Steadman, Nestlé UK & Ireland HR Director said: “At Nestlé we believe

with a passion that people and pets are better together. Our research and experience tells us that Pets at Work boosts employee morale, encourages more physical activity and helps us create a stimulating environment where our people are happy, have fun and can perform at their best. Having pets in the office is inspirational. “I’m delighted to welcome the first dogs into our York offices today, and I’m looking forward to meeting many more four-legged friends in the comings days and weeks.” Beth Pettinger from Nestlé’s Sales Team was the first person to cross the threshold with her dog Indie, a 4 year old Spaniel. Beth (pictured with Indie) said: “I’m so happy to bring Indie to work, Pets at Work is going to be great for both of us. Before I had to depend on my parents or my dog walker to give me peace of mind while I was at work, now with Indie by my side it will be much easier. When I’ve been in other Nestlé offices with PaW I’ve noticed dogs have a calming effect,

they are great ice-breakers for meeting new people, and they make sure you take a break from your desk! We are already planning group dog walks in Clarence Gardens nearby during our lunch breaks, so bringing Indie to work is going to be good for my mental and physical health.” The PaW scheme in York will only be open to Nestlé people based in Nestlé House, strict decontamination procedures between the factory area and offices already exist.
Bring Your Dog to Work Day is on Friday 21st June Now’s about the time of year that workers start planning for Britain’s best day out for dogs - Bring Your Dog To Work Day (21st June), the charity day when thousands of us take our precious pooches to help us out at work. Here are some tips to make sure your furry friend, and your colleagues all have a puptastic fun and memorable day at work: • Puppies in the office are cute but while they might be house trained it might not be the same at work - take care, make sure they are leashed and safe at all times • If you’re commuting on public transport, make sure your dog is

used to buses and trains - especially during rush hour Take into account your dog’s personality - are they people dogs, friendly or reserved? Make sure you communicate this to your colleagues. If you are going into a lift - check with the people on board before you get in the lift if they are nervous or ok with dogs Even if your dog is not a chewer at home the office cables might be irresistible - bring lots of chew toys to distract them from having a nibble on interesting looking wires. Better yet, tape down wires. Take them out for plenty of breaks but don’t let colleagues take your
precious pooch out without you unless they know each other very well • Keep them occupied, and while filing or data entry might be out of the question some puzzle toys to stimulate their brains will keep them busy at their desks - they could become an invaluable member of staff • It might be a good idea to bring their bed in for the day or a comfortable blanket so there is somewhere that feels familiar and it will encourage them to have a rest after all the initial excitement has died down.
National Pet Day National Pet Day – 10 Reasons Why Rescue is Best when it Comes to Getting a New Pet
T
his National Pet Day, Thursday 11 April, leading animal charity Battersea Dogs & Cats Home set out to encourage would-be pet owners to consider adopting a dog or cat from a rescue centre. There are many benefits to adopting an animal from a rescue, including receiving expert advice and support, reassurance that your new pet has been fully medically and behaviourally assessed before heading home, and best of all, knowing that you are giving an animal a second chance to be loved. Here are ten reasons why Battersea dogs and cats can make the best pets:
1. We help you find your best match Battersea’s rehoming team will always aim to match a potential owner and any existing pets with a suitable new companion. Every dog and cat at Battersea has their own unique personality and needs and staff will make sure these match with new owners.
2. Dogs and cats of every size On average Battersea will take in nine dogs and seven cats every day across

their three centres in London, Windsor and Kent. As a result, there are always a wide range of dogs and cats of all shapes, sizes, ages and breeds, from tiny kittens to retired Greyhounds, gentle giant Maine Coons to bouncy young Spaniels.
3. Happy healthy pets All Battersea animals receive veterinary checks prior to going to their new home including worming, flea treatment and vaccinations. Not only that, but owners can bring their new pet to Battersea’s
on-site Clinic for free treatment for conditions relating to their stay for up to three months after going home.
4. Know Your Pet All Battersea animals receive a detailed behaviour and temperament assessment before they are ready to be adopted. Our behaviourists are highly experienced and knowledgeable about specific breed traits, giving new owners complete peace of mind, Battersea’s experts are only an email or phone call away, offering

support and advice whenever you may need it.
5. Battersea and beyond Former Battersea animals have gone on to live with lovely new owners based all over the UK and beyond. Anyone can register to adopt a Battersea dog or cat regardless of your address. However everyone will need to be able to travel to one of the three rescue centres to meet their potential new pet. The most important thing is making sure each dog and cat is matched with the right owner wherever that home may be.
6. Supporting the work of charities Battersea champions and supports all vulnerable dogs and cats and is determined to create lasting change for animals in our society. Last year alone, Battersea helped almost 7,000 dogs and cats.
7. Making a stand against puppy farms By choosing to adopt a pet from a rescue instead of buying one online, you are not risking inadvertently supporting the cruel puppy farming industry. It can be tempting to opt for the quick fix and buy a puppy from a website or via social media, but it is often impossible to tell what conditions this young animal has really come from and whether you are actually getting what you are being sold.
8. Starter kits and savings To rehome an animal from Battersea,
the fee is £135 for dogs, £165 for puppies (under six months), £75 for cats, £85 for kittens (under six months). The cost includes a full veterinary and behavioural assessment, microchipping, initial vaccinations, a collar, identification tag and lead. Your dog or cat will also have been neutered or have an appointment arranged to do so. These costs represent a significant saving on the fees you could pay should you buy a pet from elsewhere. Each rehomed pet will also be covered with four weeks’ free Petplan insurance so that right from the start your dog or cat will be covered for accidents and new illnesses as they settle into their new surroundings.
9. Part of the family By welcoming a rescue dog or cat in to your life you will bring lots of extra love in to your home. Many people consider their pets to be another

member of the family or their best friend.
10. Second chances All of the wonderful dogs and cats at Battersea are hoping for a second chance at finding a loving home. By adopting a rescue animal, you are helping to restore an animal’s faith in humans and showing them the love and kindness that they truly deserve. Dogs and cats hoping to become part of the family this National Pet Day include Chicken the chatty Sphynx cat; Aidan the sweet-natured Staffordshire Bull Terrier who has been waiting over 500 days for a home; beautiful black cat Gracie; people-pleaser Felix the young cat; German Shepherd Dog cross Buddy who’s on the lookout for a new friend; and livewire pup Chewy. What allergies? Relieve the irritation of itchy skin naturally
I
sn’t early summer an absolute joy, those extra hours of daylight and long summer evening walks, I think we all benefit mentally and physically from those lighter evenings. As we move into summer however, at Dorwest we receive a huge increase in customer calls asking for advice for dogs with skin disorders and allergies. The reason being is as the temperature warms up, we see an increase in pollens and grasses and these can be a huge issue for many dogs. Licensed herbal medicines can really help give your dog some relief, so that you can all enjoy the summer season.
What is a skin disorder? • Itchy Skin • Hot spots and red patches • Pustules and spots • Baldness • Flaky skin • Oily smelly skin The above are all symptoms of a skin problem and a dog may have just one of the symptoms above or perhaps many. A skin disorder is simply when the skin reacts to an internal or external factor, some causes are: • Allergic causes – Internal or external; food intolerances or pollens • Parasitic causes – fleas, mites or mange • Environmental – contact dermatitis, chemical irritants (washing powder), insect bites • Genetic pre-disposition – defective skin barriers, breed specific 18 | Total Grooming Magazine
Whatever the cause, skin issues are very common but equally complex. Many owners have had skin and allergy testing at the vets but without a definitive answer, and as a pet owner this can leave you scratching your head and feeling increasingly frustrated.
Our four-step plan Our advice, go back to basics and follow our four-step plan for at least one month to help relieve the discomfort, and see an improvement in pet’s skin:
1. Bedding It may sound obvious but wash your dogs’ bed! They are a haven for dust and associated dust mites, they also can accumulate with allergens such as pollen as they are transferred from their coat. Don’t use scented fabric conditions and wash at a good hot temperature. Also remember human beds are too hot for our furry companions, so let them sleep in their own bed.
2. Grooming As you know, brushing your dog daily is really important to maintain healthy skin and coat. It helps to boost circulation, remove old skin, dirt and moulted hair which in turn allows circulation of air over the skin and allows new hair and skin to grow. Bathing regularly using a natural shampoo free of chemicals which will help wash away allergens and dirt. Oatmeal Advance is the perfect choice.
3. Feeding Most people have heard the saying ‘you are what you eat’ and this still holds
true for our pets. The skin and coat are very visible indicators of health and with a fresh, natural, balanced diet our pets can avoid the junk food and support healthy skin with simple great nutrition. Avoid giving any ‘treats’ containing colourings, additives or synthetic ingredients.
4. Treatment Herbs in the form of carefully formulated and properly regulated medicines have proved over many years to often be the more permanent answer to many of the non-specific skin conditions that dogs suffer from. By using the whole plant in a medicine, we obtain the benefit of many thousands of chemical compounds in each plant and these work in a synergistic natural way to provide a balanced and effective approach to treatment. Start giving both Green Releaf® and Garlic and Fenugreek Tablets at the treatment dose for one month for maximum benefit and to relieve symptoms, then reduce to the maintenance dose to keep any problems under control. Between them these two licensed medicines have naturally occurring antioxidant activity, antibacterial properties, antiinflammatory compounds, natural painkillers (analgesics) and antihistamine, all of which relieve the irritation of itchy skin. Currently with 25% off rrp when purchased as a skin duo until 9th June 2019. Should you or your customers need further advice email our advisors info@dorwest.com, ring our advice line if you want to chat things through 01308 897272 or connect with us on social media. Have a great summer! Jo Boughton-White MSc Managing Director, Dorwest Herbs Ltd

Tear Staining Groomer, Jenny Farrell, gives her advice on tackling tear staining from the causes to possible resolutions:
I
am going to focus on the dreaded tear staining problem! We all have those clients who ask every time they come in “How can I get rid of this brown around the eyes?” like us stylist are magically going to be able to fix the ongoing problem. Grooming Van of the Year
The Portable Palace Created from our Revolutionary insulated panel, the Palace provides groomers with unrivalled benefits never seen before in the industry! This amazing new concept was born due to our lining's incredible lifespan - they often out live the vans they were placed in - so we created a demountable pod where your business can be moved on to the next chassis easily when needed - or if you no longer wish to be mobile, you can demount the pod and work from your garden!
• • • • • • • •
As the chassis ages, the Palace can be removed and placed onto a brand new chassis - resulting in a much cheaper cost than having to buy a whole new van and conversion with next to no downtime If the chassis is involved in an accident or breaks down you can simply remove the body, place it on the ground and work from your driveway whilst you wait for it to be repaired. The lining will not out live the vehicle like so often seen with used van conversions. You then have to sell the van & conversion and then buy a new van and conversion and wait whilst it is converted. Whereas with the Palace, you can keep the pod forever and change the chassis as you need to. Once you choose to retire from mobile grooming you can remove the Palace, sell the chassis and work from the Palace in your garden instead of having to buy a parlour or convert a room in your house. When you choose to move home, you can take the pod with you and this portability combined with the size means they will not normally require planning permission in your garden. You never need to buy a Brand new chassis that can depreciate - simply buy used a chassis and then swap them out as they get too old. Smaller than its LWB Van equivalent but provides a more workable space inside that is highly customisable as there are no van strutts or vehicle constraints Can be driven on a normal car driving license Say goodbye to having to buy a whole new van and conversion every few years - simply move your Palace from one chassis to another with zero down time and when the time comes and you no longer want to be mobile, simply

I
f you have ever been to a grooming competition and fancy having a go yourselves then keep reading as I hope to give you some pointers to preparing for a grooming competition.
Grooming competitions in 2019 The British Isles Grooming Association has a list of shows for the year in the UK. If your show is not on here, please email http://www.mybiga.org/EventsCalendar-2019
Look and Plan The different grooming competitions follow different rules so it is important to look at these. Is it a general grooming show or a European Grooming Association ruled show? General grooming shows have their own format of classes and their own entry requirements, whereas an EGA show has a distinct class format which applies from one EGA show to another. Go to the shows and look at the class types and the standard of the grooms in those classes. What class will you enter? What breed would you like to use? Do you have the breed available or do you need to source it? Or you may be interested in a mix breed or creative class? How will you get to the show and do you have the means to transport a dog safely (especially if it belongs to someone else)? These are some of the initial 26 | Total Grooming Magazine

Good preparation is key!
questions you will need to ask yourself.
Take part and Learn Taking part is fun and a huge learning process. You will make lots of friends, some who will compete and others who don’t. You can make travelling buddies who are local to you, with the same interest and meet up with those at the show who are from far away. The grooming world is an extensive network of like-minded people, passionate about grooming and all it entails, they are keen to meet and help you fulfil your ambitions. If you haven’t entered a grooming competition before, the standards are very high and no matter what your skill and knowledge level, there is always more to learn. You will need to learn about the breed that you will be using and the technical trimming techniques, styles and balancing of the dog that are required to put it one cut above the rest. You may need to seek breed specialist’s advice or previous winners to get some additional tips on your breed to improve the style and finish. You will be surprised how small changes can make huge differences and be the difference between placements or 28 | Total Grooming Magazine
not placing at all.
Practice, Practice, Practice My advice is do not practice in the competition ring. This is a costly way to take part and can reduce your confidence. Stop and think about what you are doing. It’s a competition and you need to pull out all the stops to place. This means – practicing the trim, practicing in the time scale with the table you will be using, ensure the table is not too big as this stops the dogs moving around too much. Work around the dog in a system using the products and equipment that you will be using on the day. When you have finished practicing, stop, let the dog get down and have a run around, have a break and a shake. Look at the dog on the floor as well as again back on the table and go through it again with a comb. You will see any parts that don’t sit right on the move, or once combed out and back on the table. Look to improve these parts on the day.
Things to remember: 1. Visualize yourself on the winning podium. 2. Be optimistic, look and plan. 3. Stay focused and seek professional
training to improve. 4. Practice, practice, practice. 5. Sleep early. 6. Eat a high-carb breakfast. 7. Prepare what you need the day before the competition. 8. Leave yourself plenty of time 9. Meditate and keep calm. Get your feedback from the judges after competing, wherever you may place. It’s always beneficial to get the feedback and learn to improve for next time. Look after yourselves and the pets and people you serve to make for a happy and long career in grooming. Heidi Anderton LCGI ICMG www.absolutelyanimals.biz

Paws for thought... Debby Knight of the Bristles Grooming Salon and Training Centre, visits Jayne Fitzsimmons’ mobile salon called Dainty Paws
L
iving on the edge of Shropshire, Jayne covers the counties of Powys, Shropshire and Clwyd. Jayne is originally from Manchester and transferred with her company from there to an office in Ludlow several years ago. She was team leader of a stationery marketing company for two years and before that manager in a small call centre. In these roles Jayne managed teams of anywhere from 8 to 17 people, but despite her apparent career success, Jayne had always wanted to work with dogs and groom. However, in 2010 she shattered an ankle and this made her rethink her options. Instead of pursuing her dream of grooming, she decided to move to another office job as she was unable to stand all day she felt dog grooming would not be an option. Three years down the line she was made redundant and with her health now more robust, she decided at that point to reconsider a career in dog grooming. She spent a taster day at The Bristles Dog Grooming and Training Salon with me and absolutely loved it. She knew at this point that this was what she wanted to do for the rest of her career. As a result, Jayne then went on to train at Dazzles Dog Grooming and Training Salon in Wrexham with Debbie Noah. Here, she learned how to prep and style dogs to the customers’ requirements. And so Dainty Paws Dog Grooming was born in 2017. When she opened the business her husband, Pete, was running a campsite on leased land where they also lived and as part of the contract, the owners didn’t allow a second business to be run from 30 | Total Grooming Magazine

there. This meant she had to look for alternatives to working from home and started looking at grooming van conversions. When she finished training she had a few months before the van was ready and was very nervous about going out on her own. “I expect it was just fear of the unknown. You know how it is when you go out of your comfort zone and with it being a new career as well,” Jayne explains. For the first six months Jayne worked part-time and knew she couldn’t grow the business further without going full time. In July 2017 she spread her wings and by the end of the year she was fully booked month on month. By the summer of 2018 she was looking to close her books due to the fantastic clients and the amount of business coming in. Jayne continued her training by attending grooming seminars and aims to attend at least three a year finding them very informative. She has also met some lovely groomers along the way and keeps in touch with them. She says: “The seminars are a great way to keep skills and knowledge up-to-date and a great way to network with other groomers.” After two busy years Jayne says she is still learning, but recommends to everyone starting out to keep up-to-
date with training, as every day brings something new. She says: “I was really lucky, as my trainer was always on hand to answer any questions or queries after my course and I still ask questions now.” Jayne has just completed her City and Guilds Level 3 Intro and has only one dog to do to complete her full Diploma. She is hoping to have it all completed by June this year. She says she hasn’t even had time to think about the future as she has been so busy. She does know that she will continue with her grooming and
is hoping to add teeth cleaning to her business and expanding her skills set. Jayne says going into business was the best decision she ever made. She has met some fantastic and supportive people along the way and would underline to anyone thinking about grooming as a career, the importance of networking with other groomers in your area. Other groomers can recommend each other rather than working against one another, support and swap customers too. Her advice is: “Be friendly and helpful and you will have a fabulous career.”

Competition Grooming Tips Angela Pinder & Alison Rogers provide their top tips for competition grooms:
Keeping calm is vital for the dog’s well-being
T
he Great North Groom Competition is looming and it’s great to see the competition has already pretty much sold out. Groomer and behaviourist, Angela Pinder and top groomer, Alison Rogers offer their top tips to help you and your dog prepare for this competition and other similar events.
Alison’s Top Tips Alison Rogers, owner of Alice in Groomingland, is a multi-award winning and world-renowned groomer. As well as being in groom team England and Artero, she is also the organiser of The Great North Groom. • First things first, stay calm! One of the major things that can affect a dog is the groomer’s behaviour. If you are stressed then they will be too, 34 | Total Grooming Magazine
Angela Pinder takes it all in her stride
especially dogs that aren’t used to being in that environment, so do your best to remain composed. I would recommend using a little Vita Canis Calming Dog Spray if needed. Get to the event early so that you’re not rushing and so that the dog can get used to their surroundings. Take a minute to breath when you feel yourself getting stressed, focus on your breathing, and most importantly enjoy it. • Of course, it’s totally normal to be anxious and stressed at a competition, and what is the best way to stay calm? Be prepared! Pack in plenty of time before the event so that you know you’ll have everything you need and won’t be caught short. Make a list ahead of time and ask yourself if you have packed for any potential
mishaps or accidents. Ensure all your equipment is charged up, and include things like extra towels, spare shampoo and backup equipment just in case. Make sure you pack the obvious things (these are almost always things you forget) such as the dog’s water bowl, food and poo bags. Remember if you are taking dog treats, then don’t use them during the competition as this can distract the other dogs. • Don’t forget to look after yourself. Pack essentials for yourself and make sure you drink plenty of water. A chocolate bar is a great way of getting a boost of energy if you’re flagging and bring headache tablets in case of a tension headache. • When you are walking in from your vehicle, try to keep your dog as

clean as possible. Walk in calmly and focused and don’t allow your dog to run around and play with other dogs, as they will inevitably get dirty. Treat your dog like a show dog and use a crate to avoid people touching them before, after and during. It also gives the dog their own space, and some dogs appreciate a crate cover/ towel. • Prep prep prep! Make sure you are there before the judges and take your time with the prep work as it is absolutely key. The calmer and more prepared you are, the better the dog will behave. Groom the dog out thoroughly and check that the coat is clean and in its best condition. If there is something you are not sure of or need to draw attention to, such as a shaven area from a recent visit to the vets, now is the time to ask. Ask a steward or the judge, they are there to help. Don’t rush, focus and once you’ve prepped get someone to take a second look to check there are no knots. • Keep an eye on the judges so that you can work out the order the dog’s will be selected in. The dog doesn’t need to be stacked the whole time, just for when the judges come over. Stacking is presenting the dog in their perfect stance, where the angulation of the legs and placement of the dog is priority in order to get an accurate and precise groom. If your dog wants to sit down, and it is convenient, then let them. When the competition starts try to chill and just focus on you and the dog. Engage with the dog, do not use your phone, and keep an eye on the judges so that you can work out the order the dog’s will be selected in. Present your dog the same way you present yourself and get your dog and standing up ready in time for the judge. Once you’ve been judged (whether this is right away or later on), refrain from letting your dog play or getting dirty in case there are photo opportunities later.
Angela’s Top Tips Angela Pinder is a dog groomer and dog behaviour tutor, who founded her 36 | Total Grooming Magazine
Angela Pinder is a groomer and behaviourist as well as founder of Paw Naturel
own company creating luxury natural pet grooming products, Paw Naturel. • Find a well-behaved dog with a good coat and good confirmation. Don’t be afraid to ask around and give yourself plenty of time to find the right dog. There are some groups where groomers/owners will loan their dogs out for competitions. When you are choosing a dog make sure you pick one that travels well, doesn’t get travel sick, and is used to being in new environments such as bustling shows and unfamiliar hotel rooms. If they get travel sick allow time to travel and arrive the day before to let them rest. If you’ve found a dog that isn’t ideal behaviour-wise and might not be used to the environment, if you are prepared to put the work in allow for at least 6-12 months for a regular training program. • While prepping and during the event be confident, have a positive mindset, practice meditation to bring your heart rate back down and remember to breathe. Dog’s will pick up on cortisol straight away and they will already be picking up on everyone else’s stress levels in the room. Our bodies are constantly producing chemical reactions and a dog’s heightened sense of smell will pick
up on these. I would recommend bringing a friend for support, someone who has a calming influence on you and who will give you valuable feedback. • Never tell a dog off, because the dogs will be communicating with you, so be sure to look out for warning signs and stress signals. Recognise your dog’s needs. For example, if you were going to pick up a horse’s foot, you would reach out your hand, introduce your hand, scratch it on the chin and work your way down to the foot. For a dog, let them know that you are picking their foot up – put your hand there for a moment or two so that they can adjust their balance. If you are struggling with a particular section of the body and the dog is pulling away, don’t force it, simply move to another area and then try to come back to it later. If they still aren’t having it then move away again until they are calmer. If you find your dog getting stressed, don’t worry just acknowledge them and ask a steward to be excused if the dog needs a break from being on the table. Take a minute to breathe when you feel yourself getting stressed, focus on your breathing, and most importantly enjoy the show.

A dog who survived against the odds wins bravery award Tess Daly recently suffered dreadfully, following her dog’s death after she accidentally ran her over and sadly, these incidents aren’t uncommon:
D
ollar – a 16 year-old Jack Russell Terrier bitch - has won ChesterGates Veterinary Specialist’s highly acclaimed Pet of the Month title in recognition of her incredible bravery in recovering from a horrific road traffic accident which left her with multiple injuries. Local businessman, Andy Hardwick from Tarbock, Merseyside, had Dollar from a puppy and she had proven to be the perfect companion, accompanying him at work for the past 15 years. The accident happened at their farm work base when Dollar shot out of the office and into the path of Andy’s oncoming vehicle. Andy was shocked and horrified and was convinced that his lovely dog would not survive. He immediately rushed Dollar to his local veterinary practice who stabilised her and then referred her to ChesterGates Veterinary Specialists in Chester for a full investigation of her injuries and for surgery. Andy said: “I was in shock, I really believed that Dollar wouldn’t make it as my jeep had run her over and she was in a dreadful state with blood pouring from a throat injury. My vet said I would need to prepare myself for the worst, but I was racked with guilt and just wasn’t ready to give up on her. She is such a lovely easy-going loyal member of our family.” ChesterGates’ soft tissue veterinary surgeon, Lissie Henderson was able to operate on Dollar and although the team was dubious about her chances of surviving, they all gave it their best shot. Andy continued: “Apparently, Dollar stopped breathing during surgery 38 | Total Grooming Magazine
and they had to sort out her jaw and massive damage to her throat. After surgery, she had a feeding tube inserted and was so weak but after almost a week, she rallied round and when we went to see her she climbed out of the box and we realised that she had turned a corner. “The staff were fantastic. They gave her the very best of care and beyond that, so much love and attention. We didn’t dare hope that she would recover and I still can’t believe that she is back home with us. She really is a ‘miracle dog’ and I just feel it was all about the love we and everyone at ChesterGates had for her.” Lissie Henderson commented: “To the ChesterGates’ team Dollar is known as the ‘Miracle Dog’. Even at 16 years old, Dollar never once let us doubt her fighting spirit! Her character and her owners’ dedication are the main reasons why she is still with us today. “Dollar was involved in a road traffic accident which resulted in shock, several skin wounds and breathing difficulties. Dollar was also severely neurologically affected, losing the ability to stand, walk and eat. “After some intensive nursing care, wound management, surgery and of course time, Dollar’s personality is as strong as ever. Her feeding tube is out and she’s happily eating and drinking by herself. She’s at home doing some light exercise and having a lot of tender loving care.” Andy concluded: “Dollar made a remarkable recovery. Words fail me, I never dreamt that she would recover like she has. The team at ChesterGates were all very reassuring and Lissie was

Bespoke Baths and Tables Manufactured in Shropshire, by Mutneys Professional Pet Care
T
he business was started in 1995 by Jamie and Stephanie Roberts, who had both been brought up with dog grooming and wanted to start a company that truly believes in providing groomers with quality products and advice. Today they are still supplying some of the best products available and pride themselves on their high level of customer service and grooming advice, a member of their knowledgeable team is always on hand to answer any questions that may come up along the way. They manufacture many of the products at their premises in Shropshire, attend a range of trade shows throughout the year and also work tirelessly, to source high quality products, which are also made here in the UK, exclusively for you and your pets! Mutneys have also been manufacturing their own range of bespoke grooming equipment for over 19 years, including specialist grooming tables, show trolleys, trolley tables, baths, control posts and drying cabinets. The products in the range are all made to order and handcrafted at their Shropshire based premises by experienced engineers. Mutneys like to support other British companies and manufacturers; with all parts responsibly sourced and recycled within the UK, wherever possible including, frames made from British quality tested box steel and 40 | Total Grooming Magazine
table tops made from recycled rubber matting. Their specialist grooming equipment can also be custom built to your specifications, including their height adjustable tables and bath frames. They can build you something from scratch or even adapt their designs to incorporate your requirements; whether you want to colour match with your salon, or even if you need your equipment to fit in a certain space. If you’d like to discuss an idea with them, you can call or email for a quote. Mutneys are proud members of the British Isles Grooming Association,

Make the Best Splash Debby Knight LCGI of The Bristles Dog Grooming and Training Centre - an Assessment Centre for Summit Training Group – shares her views and experiences of baths and tables and which type is best in her opinion:
I
n my experience the best baths and tables to buy are Hydro Bath. The positive is they run off a cold water feed and have fabulous water pressure. Using a recirculating pump delivers a high volume mix of water and shampoo. This a quick efficient way of bathing a dog. A riser can be put in the bath to save bending. Negatives are they are not cheap to buy; some models are expensive to heat , especially the ones with a large water tank on the side, plus if you have three or more groomers in the salon and only one bath you may have to wait for the water to heat up .
Stainless steel baths Prices vary greatly, depending on the quality of the steel and added extras. Positives: These baths are hard wearing and some have blaster attachments, mesh trays, sliding doors and steps. Negatives: if you don’t like water marks on stainless don’t buy one !!! It still needs both hot and cold water feeds.
Booster Baths Positives: Most are priced under £200 and can come with a ramp, raised up on legs to save bending, lightweight and portable. Negatives: You may be limited to the size of dog you can get in it and due to quite low sides, water can be spread around a large area of the salon. It requires a hot and cold water feed and a shower unit over it at an additional cost . Human / bathroom bath Positives: price obviously either cheap or free. The old cast iron baths are durable and can be mounted on a frame. Negatives: it still needs a shower unit over it, it is large and takes up a lot of room. 42 | Total Grooming Magazine

Top tips Buy the right bath for the correct job. Buy the best you can afford. Buy from a company that provides good customer service, especially if you have a Hydrobath. Keep your bath clean and service regularly if required.
Grooming tables Electric Positives: They are easy to raise up and down smoothly and most go very low to the floor for large dogs to get on and off, saves your back. Negatives: requires electricity so may limit where you place the table as you need a plug.
Portable trolly table
Hydraulic Positives: No wires, but you can still raise and lower the table, cheaper than the electric ones. Negatives: The cheap tables with a central pedestal are very unsteady
Static Positives: Inexpensive and portable, can come fitted with wheels and used as a trolley to carry grooming kit, ideal for mobile groomer. Negative: no height adjustment, so the groomer has to bend over. (you can buy an adjustable,
Portable table no wheels with basket
44 | Total Grooming Magazine
portable table , but they can be quite awkward to raise and lower).
Top tips Buy the best you can afford. Check the rubber surface is scratch resistant and removable so it can be changed if worn or damaged in the future. Don’t buy one that is too big for your salon or too heavy to carry if portable. Check the lifting weight to make sure it will take your largest dog. Clean the top between dogs to help reduce cross contamination and
Hyraulic table
lengthen its life Service regularly if it is electric or hydraulic . If it is hydraulic or electric have a wheel kit on it for ease of moving around the salon . My personal choice would be a Hydrobath. I have owned one for 10 years and wouldn’t be without one. My choice of table is electric. I own both hydraulic and electric and over the last 15 years haven’t had problems with either.

Pets as Therapy In this issue we find out more about the valuable work of Pets as Therapy:
T
herapy pets can help people in schools, hospitals and care homes, and you and your pet or your client and their pet can volunteer. Volunteering your dog as a therapy pet can be an extremely rewarding experience If you’ve got a bit more spare time on your hands following retirement, an empty nest or reduced working hours then volunteering could be a rewarding way to spend some time. If you’re a dog owner or even a cat owner, your fourlegged friend could get involved too. You know how much joy your pet gives you, so why not let them give comfort and companionship to others, as a Pets As Therapy pet.
How Pets As Therapy works Pets As Therapy is a national 50 | Total Grooming Magazine
charity founded in 1983 and relies on its many volunteers who, along with their well-behaved pets to make regular visits to nursing homes, hospitals, hospices and day care centres. The volunteers spend time with patients, residents or visitors, allowing them to stroke the PAT Dog and enjoy some companionship. All Pets As Therapy volunteers need to provide references, and the dogs go through a strict assessment to make sure they are suitable. Dogs must be healthy and happy to be fussed over. But they can’t get too excited and bark, jump up or paw people – hygiene and safety is paramount, and some frail patients may have paper-thin skin which scratches easily.
The benefits of therapy dogs For dog lovers who no longer live in their own home, or elderly people who attend day care centres but are unable 52 | Total Grooming Magazine
to own a pet, interacting with a PAT Dog can bring great comfort and joy. Patting a dog, and seeing it respond, gives people a little extra boost in addition to medical and nursing care. Sick or withdrawn patients can perk up when they have a visit from a fourlegged friend. And even those who say they’re not fond of dogs have been known to raise a smile when they see a happy face and wagging tail. The very special brand of care, companionship and therapy that Pets As Therapy provides is being increasingly recognised by the medical profession. Volunteers are being asked to assist with stroke rehabilitation work and help people with phobias or mental health issues. Many schools are also now inviting Pets As Therapy dogs to spend time in the classroom and help children with reading difficulties. These are known as ‘reading dogs’ and here the dog just lies down while the child
reads to him or her.
What kind of dog can become a Pets As Therapy dog? There are around 4,500 Pets As Therapy dogs (and just over 100 PAT cats) visiting hospitals, residential nursing homes, day care centres, hospices and special needs schools in the UK. And these special dogs come in all shapes and sizes. All that is required is that the dog is at least nine months old, is fit and healthy, enjoys the company of others, and you’ve owned your pet for over six months. Your dog will also need to pass a Pets As Therapy assessment to check that it has the right temperament.
How can dogs help others? Sick and withdrawn patients in hospitals and hospices often open up and let barriers down when a Pets

As Therapy dog is around. And those in nursing homes and day care centres, perhaps pet lovers who are no longer able to have a dog of their own, enjoy fussing over a friendly fourlegged visitor. Pets As Therapy has also launched a READ 2 DOGS programme, helping children who are reluctant readers to enjoy books.
What will the assessment involve? During the assessment, carried out by a Pets As Therapy accredited assessor or vet, you will need to be able to show that your dog is friendly and wellbehaved, responds to your commands, and walks on a relaxed lead. Dogs that continuously bark, get too excited or jump up and paw people may not be suitable. It needs to be 54 | Total Grooming Magazine
comfortable in different environments, respond calmly to sudden noises, and not get anxious if stroked or patted vigorously.
How much time do I need to commit? Pets As Therapy do their best to match up volunteers with an establishment that is close to their home, so it’ll be convenient and easy to travel to. But it’s nice to build up a rapport with patients and visit on a regular basis. An hour’s visit is about right. Don’t underestimate the impact on your dog and how hard your dog is working. They may be wagging their tail and enjoying being fussed over, but don’t let them get too hot or tired. Younger dogs may quickly lose attention, and older dogs may just want to go home to have a lie-down.
What else do I need to consider? If you’re interested in becoming a Pets As Therapy volunteer, along with your dog, you can find out more by calling 01494 569130. Or go online to www.petsastherapy.org and complete the relevant application form. And remember, it’s not just your pet who is being assessed, you are too, so you’ll also need to give the names of two people who can give you a reference. To help with charity costs, volunteers are asked to pay an annual subscription of £19. For those living in Scotland, find out about becoming a Therapet volunteer at www.canineconcernscotland.org.uk.

More information about Pets As Therapy can be found online at www. petsastherapy.org. All you need to do is to get the nursing home or hospital to contact the Placement Officer, who will find out a bit more about the establishment, its needs and will be able to tell them if there is a volunteer in your area who is able to visit. Alternatively, an authoritative member of staff can fill in the online visit request form. If there is not a volunteer in your area, you could always try to find one. Put up posters in local shops or in the vet surgery, or perhaps ask for volunteers and spread the word via a community Facebook page. Pets As Therapy are unable to arrange visits to individuals in their own private houses for reasons of safety, security and insurance. Loyal and regal, the German Shepherd
Breed Profile: The German Shepherd (GSD) Commonly known as one of the most desirable breeds for police, military and guarding work, the GSD is also one of the most popular breeds in the United States. The medium-sized dog is strong and muscular with dark, almondshaped eyes and a bushy tail.
T
he variable coat can be double, plush or long-haired and comes in colours of black and tan, although they may also be sable, black, blue, liver and white. The white German Shepherd is considered a separate breed and commonly referred to as a white shepherd. The panda shepherd refers to a variation in a coat colour consisting of white, black and tan despite none of its ancestors having a white coat.
60 | Total Grooming Magazine
The average height of the breed ranges between 22 and 26 inches with an average weight of 77 to 85 pounds. Life expectancy is around 12 to 14 years, although some GSDs can live longer.
Origin As the name implies, the breed was developed in Germany in the 19th century. Breeds of herding and farm dogs were crossed to create the new
breed with the same work ethic and companionship they possessed. The parent club was formed in 1899 after the breed was exhibited in 1882 in Hanover. The first GSD named Horan was registered in April of 1889. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1908.
Purpose GSDs are known as working dogs companion pets and competitors
WWW.AEOLUSPETUK.CO.UK
in the conformation ring. Their original instincts are in herding and protection, and because of these qualities they are excellent working dogs for the police and military. They are also excellent service dogs and participate in Schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, bomb and drug detection and detect underground mines and gas leaks. The vast flexibility and speed of this breed is amazing. Whether flying around agility courses, taking down and holding suspects or sniffing for drugs and mines, the boundless energy, stamina and dedication of the GSD is hard to match.
Temperament GSDs are known and revered for their ability to learn and retain training, even for specialized purposes. Their even disposition, a combination of loyalty, courage, intelligence, fearlessness and protective nature, are qualities desired in a variety of fields. The GSD has an excellent sense of smell and can be patient, observant and decisive, qualities that make them such excellent service dogs for people with disabilities. The GSD breed is eager to learn, alert and ready for anything. They are energetic and need an outlet for their energy, and firm and consistent positive reinforcement helps to keep them focused. They can be wary and apprehensive of strangers, but once friendship is granted it is given for life. GSDs can experience separation anxiety, and it is important not to leave them alone or crated for extended periods of time. They are good with other pets and children as long as they are properly socialised.
Exercise Needs This active breed is looking for a job to do or a way to expel energy. Daily walks, jogging and/or play are recommended to keep them healthy and happy. The exercise your GSD gets is important if your dog does not work on a regular basis. This intelligent, active breed desires work and tasks, so these needs must be met through either jobs or exercise. They can do well in flats 62 | Total Grooming Magazine
and smaller properties as long as their exercise needs are met, which will be a daily, consistent commitment.
Grooming Requirements In addition to trimming nails, cleaning ears and brushing the teeth, there are other grooming responsibilities for GSDs. Their skin irritates easily, so they should not be bathed too frequently. They are average shedders and can shed more seasonally, so daily brushing is recommended. If your GSD is a long-haired version, additional grooming may be necessary.
Common Health Problems Despite being a popular, active dog breed, the GSD does have a substantial list of potential health problems. Every individual dog is different, so there is no guarantee your GSD will get any of the following conditions (but you should be aware of them): • Bloat • Hip dysplasia • Elbow dysplasia • Blood disorders • Epilepsy • Eczema • Von Willebrand’s disease (bleeding disorder) • Perianal fistulas
• Keratitis (cornea inflammation) • Flea allergies • Tumors (spleen is common) • Degenerative myelopathy • Endocrine disorders • Digestive problems caused by myasthenia gravis (and megaesophagus)
Is the German Shepherd the Right Dog for You? The GSD is an active, energetic, loyal and protective dog that will become integrated into your family. This is not a breed that can be ignored, left alone for long periods of time or crated excessively since they are susceptible to separation anxiety. They need exercise, tasks, consistent training and regular grooming. GSDs do well with children and other pets as long as they are properly socialised. They can be protective and wary of strangers, but once accepted a GSD will be a friend for life. There are many health problems common for this breed, so veterinary care should be maintained on an ongoing basis. GSDs can live in apartments, but daily outings for exercise will be required. If these recommendations sound like ones you can fulfil, a German Shepherd might be the dog for you.

How to combat seasonal allergies Groomer, Jitka Krizova, shares her tips on using natural remedies to combat seasonal allergies in pets:
A
n allergy is an abnormal response to something in the environment. It is very common in people and is the same in dogs. A substance capable of causing an allergy is called an allergen. People, dogs and other animals that are allergic need only come into contact with very small amounts of allergen to cause the reaction, the symptoms. Skin problems in dogs are commonly caused by allergic inhalant dermatitis (hay fever, atopy). While humans have mast cells in the respiratory passages that become inflamed and cause sneezing, dogs inhale the pollen but develop atopy in the skin. Dogs don’t usually sneeze with atopy; most are itchy which causes them to lick, chew and scratch.* When your dog suffers with inhalant allergies it’s impossible to avoid the allergens as the pollen is pretty much everywhere, even though surprisingly, only about 1% of the total weight of a pollen contains the allergic portion! This doesn’t sound too bad, however when you consider that the ragweed plant can produce 1 billion pollen
66 | Total Grooming Magazine
grains and most pollens and moulds can travel 30 miles in the wind … that’s pretty impossible to avoid them.* There are a few ways we can minimize the effects of the inhalant allergies, the natural way. 1. Apply Paw Butter – if your dog gets irritated paws (redness, excessive licking after a walk) and redness or rash on the skin on his belly, you can apply the Paw Butter on these areas before the walkies. Because the Paw Butter is oil-based, not water-based like creams, it stays on the skin longer and makes a film, a protective layer on the skin. The butter will not only protect the skin from the allergens but it will also moisturise the skin, and it’s both antipruritic and anti-inflammatory. 2. Use Apple cider vinegar mixed with water to rinse for your dog’s feet. You can make a 50/50 mixture in a spray bottle and apply directly onto your dog’s paws. Don’t use it on open wounds! 3. If your dog already has an allergic reaction on his skin you can use Skin Relief. It is specially designed for dogs suffering from allergies. The cooling and anti-inflammatory properties of Skin Relief will reduce the redness very quickly, it will also reduce the itchiness, and the peppermint oil in the spray helps with the pain relief. 4. What are you feeding your dog? I am a big advocate of raw feeding, because I can see the benefits in my dogs. Well balanced raw food is easier for the body to digest and the nutrients are absorbed more efficiently. A raw food diet also strengthens your dog’s immune system,
and helps fight the allergens. I even tried this on me. Of course I don’t eat raw meat, bones & offal … but a few years ago I switched to a plant based diet. My summer hay fever is minimal, and I haven’t had an antihistamine for about 4 years. 5. Add coconut oil to your dog’s diet. Coconut oil has many benefits including: Reduces allergic reactions Anti-inflammatory Boosts the immune system Aids the digestion system 6. Honey contains small amounts of bee pollen, beeswax and propolis, and they have the ability to help with pollen allergies. As we already know, an allergy is caused by certain pollen which you will also find in your local raw honey. By consuming your local raw honey, you or your dog, will naturally develop immunity to the pollen and the adverse effects will be reduced. * Ackerman, L., D.V.M. ; Skin and haircoat problems in dogs ; Alpine Publications, 1994
