Fines of up to £5,000 for animal offences proposed under new Penalty Notices Bill • Government backs new Bill to crackdown on animal offenders • Enforcement bodies would receive powers to serve penalty notices for animal health and welfare offences • Bill follows the Government’s landmark Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill Individuals who commit offences against animals will face fines of up to £5,000 under new legislation introduced to Parliament today. The fines will be introduced to ensure that offenders face tougher penalties for crimes in addition to the existing maximum 5 year prison sentence for the most serious offences. The Animals (Penalty Notices) Bill, a Private Members’ Bill introduced by Andrew Rosindell MP and which is backed by the Government, will create a system of a financial penalties of up to £5,000 for animal health and welfare offences. The penalties, which could include on-the-spot fines, can be issued to individuals who have cruelly mistreated pets, zoo animals and livestock. These new penalties will provide the authorities with an additional enforcement measure to be used alongside warnings and criminal prosecution. These penalties will introduce a more consistent and targeted approach to protecting all animals from harm. The UK has a long history of tackling animal cruelty. The new fines will act as a key deterrent to would be animal abusers in addition to the new five year maximum prison sentence for animal cruelty, which was introduced by the Government through the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill earlier this year. Rosindell, MP for Romford said: “In my 20 years as an M.P. I have consistently fought for animal welfare. Society should rightly be judged by how it treats the animals in its care but for many years, E.U. regulations limited the improvements that could be made. “Now that we have left the E.U. we have an unrivalled opportunity to make the changes that are so desperately needed. That means stronger sentences for the worst animal abusers under Chris Loder’s historic legislation. “It also means ensuring there are no gaps in legislation that animal abusers can exploit, by committing offences too severe for a warning, but not severe enough for prosecution. My Bill will close that gap, creating fines of up to £5,000 while always being clear that criminal prosecution will always be used for the most serious offences.” Animal Welfare Minister Lord Goldsmith said: “Animal cruelty has no place in our society and this Government is committed to ensuring those who abuse animals are subject to the full force of the law. “These new fines will build on our
actions to improve our already worldleading animal welfare standards, including raising the maximum prison sentence for animal cruelty to five years. “I want to commend Andrew Rosindell MP for introducing this important Bill and I look forward to working with him as it progresses through Parliament.” Chris Sherwood, Chief Executive of the RSPCA, said: “Fixed penalty notices are really useful to quickly combat suffering of farmed animals, horses and animals kept in zoos. “We are pleased that enforcement bodies will be given powers and revenue from these fines in order to safeguard animal welfare should this bill become law. “We hope these enforcement notices will serve as a good deterrent to those causing suffering to animals and also an important education tool to prevent them repeating their mistakes in the future. “These penalties, used in conjunction with tougher sentences which are coming into force soon, will provide better safeguards for all animals.”
Cat Grooming Qualification Launched By groomers for groomers Awarding Organisation, iPET Network, has launched the UK’s first ever dedicated portfolio of cat grooming qualifications. Previously the only industry qualifications available were add-ons to dog grooming courses.

ow, with the upsurge in demand for grooming of all kinds, and key differences in the core skills required to be a cat groomer, the Awarding Organisation decided that cats needed their own qualifications. Leading industry experts have helped develop the qualification to ensure the outcome is appropriate for the Cat Grooming Industry and the continued growth and development of the sector. The qualification is a balance of theoretical and practical learning to ensure that vocational skills lead the qualification with underpinned knowledge developed throughout. The practical training will be delivered at several approved iPET Network Training Providers around the country, offering the iPET Network Level 3 Award in an Introduction to Cat Grooming, iPET Network Level 3 Certificate in Cat Grooming and Introduction to Styling, iPET Network Level 3 Diploma in Cat Grooming and Salon Management and the iPET Network Level 3 Award in Feline Emergency First Aid. These qualifications are perfect for those new learners that want to gain a qualification specific to cat grooming or offers a progression route for those who are already qualified as a Dog Groomer. The qualifications also allow a Fast Track route for those who meet the eligibility of having 1 years’ experience styling cats. These qualifications aim to take Candidates on a journey from complete beginners to competent and confident commercial cat groomers. 12 | Total Grooming Magazine
One of the providers who will offer the qualification is Absolutely Animals Ltd in Lewisham, South East London which currently grooms twenty cats a week, as well as a host of dog clients. Salon owner Heidi Anderton has run the business for 28 years and can’t wait to welcome the first students through the door. She said: “We are so excited to be offering these cat grooming qualifications, and think they are so important. “Cats are very different to dogs, they are very fragile and so is their skin, they must be handled with great care. “The industry has needed this qualification for a long time, because without the proper training things could go wrong. “Unlike a dog, cats really read you from your core, in our salon we have two groomers per cat, All the focus is on the cat where they have the maximum support and attention to bring a lovely grooming experience. “The industry needs more cat groomers, and getting the qualification shows that you are working to the correct standard. Groomers of all animals also need to provide services appropriate for that animal’s coat type and spot any potential health issues. “Because iPET Network is run by groomers the courses move with the times too and you are learning from people who know all about the industry and all about animals.” According to PDSA figures 24% of the UK adult population have a cat, with 10.9 million pet cats being cared

Tried & Tested We asked a number of groomers the following questions on their shampoo selection: 1.What are your main considerations when choosing your shampoo? 2.What shampoo did you purchase? 3.What do you like most about the shampoo? 4.Would you recommend this shampoo to other groomers and if so, why? Kerrie Pegrum - Greenfields Grooming Parlour 1. My main considerations when choosing shampoo is how economical it is (price vs dilution ration). How effective it is for the coat type. What Ingredients are used as it needs to be gentle on the dogs skin and my own hands. Supplier ethos and reputation. 2. Banish Detangling Shampoo from Simpsons Grooming Supplies 3. It is like magic in a bottle! It’s made such a difference with my floofs in particular. It is convenient for daily use as it has the perfect amount of Banish conditioner premixed into the shampoo. It smells lovely, brings the coat up super clean, leaving it soft and shiny but full enough to scissor. Knots and light matts just seem to melt away when being blasted and brush out with ease. It is also fab on de-sheds. My clients have commented at how manageable it leaves the coat for them at home. It is kind to the dogs skin and my own hands. 4. I would absolutely recommend to other groomers as its a game changer! It has reduced the amount of knotty dogs coming through my door as the coat stays manageable for longer and helps the owner with brushing at home. I think I have used my 7fs twice in 6 months! It is now my go to shampoo for every floof coat that comes through my door.

My main consideration for choosing a shampoo is that it needs to be kind to the dogs skin, good quality and it needs to be easy to use (dilution ratio) and my main focus is the quality and welfare for the dogs. 2. I purchased Nano Sanitas 3. I liked the fact that when looking into this shampoo that it was pH balanced for male and female dogs and that it was for all types of fur which is brilliant as you can use this as your main shampoo instead of having lots of different shampoos for different types of fur, it’s also very good that it helps against fleas & ticks. I also like the fact that it has some natural extracts (calendula extract, chamomile, aloe Vera & coconut oil) which I believe is really good. 4. I would definitely recommend this to other groomers (give it a try I really don’t think you will be disappointed) it really does clean the fur it also leaves it feeling silky smooth, smells lovely and it doesn’t dry out your hands like other shampoos do which is an added bonus.

Lorraine - Hair of the dog 1. We have been using the above product for a few years now, after seeing it at a pet product exhibition. Our main consideration when choosing which shampoo we use is dependent upon the skin type and coat condition. If the dog has a particularly dry or sensitive skin, then we would opt for a gentle, mild, or medicated shampoo. If the dog has a greasy coat or requires a very deep cleanse then we would use a certain shampoo to strip the coat from a build up of grease and dirt. 2. We have used this shampoo on many breeds and coat types as it kills bacteria and combats itchiness which we are experiencing more frequently. It is also a very good deodorising shampoo which eliminates fox and badger smells too. 3. We have also found that this anti-bacterial and anti-fungal shampoo is as effective as vetinary prescription shampoos such as Malaseb, which is prescribed for the same skin conditions. It provides instant relief from minor skin irritations from the first application and we have found that continued use has completely alleviated a dogs irritation completely. It is also very effective in helping heal minor skin wounds and preventing possible infections. After bathing and drying, the coat is extremely clean and soft and we actually bathe the majority of our dogs in this shampoo as it is suitable for all skin and coat types, even if there is no evidence of a particular skin problem. 4. As a very busy groomers, I would 100% recommend this product to other groomers, who undoubtedly have fury clients similar to ours who would benefit from being bathed in this particular shampoo. Coupled with this product being very cost effective and great value for money (compared to other medicated or prescription products), the shampoo can be diluted but at our salon we choose not to as it still highly profitable. Finally, Tracy (the founder of this company), runs a very professional organisation and their customer service is first class! The team are always very helpful and nothing is too much trouble.
Sasha Clark - The Pooch Parlour 1. I have been using Wahl shampoos since I started dog grooming 7 years ago. I initially chose Wahl because it was a brand I was familiar with, and the products offer fantastic value for money, while being safe for dogs skin. 2. I use dirty beastie as I find it completely eradicates the “doggy smell”, the diamond white shampoo as it works incredibly well to really boost a white coat and also the aloe vera shampoo as it has a delicate, gentle smell while giving the coat a good clean. 3. I like that these shampoos are very affordable while being from a reputable brand, even though these can be diluted up to 32/1 you still get a good lather, and a lovely sheen on the coat. 4. I would absolutely recommend Wahl, what began for me as a starting out shampoo, it’s the brand I always go back to.

The new Fresh range from Groom Professional is my all-time favourite now. I know Blueberry Bloom is really popular, but my two absolute favs are Peppermint Purify and White Flower & Ginger. 3. I like that it’s natural, but still bubbles up and cleans so well. 4. I recommend it as it’s affordable, has a good dilution rate, and makes the salon smell amazing as well as the dogs! And it cleans really well.

I think it’s important to make sure you are looking for products that are suitable for the health and benefit of the dog, that are cost effective and that are as natural and eco-friendly as possible. Of course, the shampoo you choose needs to be the correct pH balance for dogs and particularly suitable for the dog’s coat and skin type. 2. There are 27 shampoos and conditioners to choose from at Mutneys and although I have tried the majority of them, these are 5 of my favourites which have been thoroughly tried and tested over the years. Avocado and Watercress is a great all round, general purpose shampoo suitable for the majority of coat and skin types and has a fresh and clean scent. It cleans and lathers well as do all the shampoos I have tried from Mutneys. Berry Blue shampoo is for white coated dogs It enhances the natural colour of the coat using natural ingredients and doesn’t contain any harsh colourants. I particularly like being able to used it neat on beards and paws to reduce staining and to help restore their natural colour. Hypoallergenic is brilliant for dogs with sensitive skin and/or known allergies. I use it on many dogs prone to skin irritation and haven’t had any concerns personally or from customers after bathing their dogs using this shampoo. It has no irritants or colourants and is fragrance free. I usually wear gloves whilst bathing due to eczema but I am able to use this shampoo without gloves with no problem. De-shedding shampoo contains aloe vera extract that softens the hair follicle to help to remove dead hair and reduce future shedding too. It leaves the coat really soft and smelling of sweet vanilla. I was probably most impressed with the results of this product. It made double coated de-sheds so much easier and I was really surprised by the amount of hair I was able to get out of the dog after the bath, even before brushing and raking, just using a blaster. The hair flew out and left the coat beautifully clean. 3. Deep Clean shampoo is another favourite. It has excellent dilution rates at 30:1 which you can lower for a better clean on really dirty dogs. It makes dogs squeaky clean, removing any bad odours without stripping out the coat completely and doesn’t leave the skin feeling too dry which can happen when using other clarifying or deep cleaning shampoos. I also condition the coat afterwards, as I do when bathing the majority of dogs, using either the Mutneys Multi-use Conditioner or Satin Conditioning Balm. 4. Yes, definitely! I am always delighted with the results of these shampoos. They are biodegradable and eco-friendly with no harsh chemical, dyes or bleaching agents. They are also really cost effective with great dilution rates and there is often a discount for buying in bulk. The current promotion is 25% off when you buy 4 x 5ltrs. t is with deep regret that The Kennel Club decided to cancel Crufts 2021, which was due to take place from 15 – 18 July. This was owing to ongoing uncertainty due to the Covid-19 pandemic and in consideration for the health and safety of all its volunteers, judges, exhibitors, sponsors, trade stand holders, visitors and staff. For many months, ongoing

discussions have been taking place with the NEC and other parties in trying to find a way forward in making it possible to run this year’s show in a Covidsecure way. The opening up of events in general, especially those that take place inside is still unclear and The Kennel Club’s priority must be the health and safety of all those mentioned above. The Kennel Club also recognised that
clarity was required now to mitigate any commitments that all our potential participants may undertake. Over the past few weeks, The Kennel Club commissioned a survey asking for opinions from those in the canine world on returning to events and although it has been very reassuring to see that 60% would like to get back to their dog activities as soon as it is safe to do so, it was noted that 63% did not feel

comfortable or were unsure about attending an inside event in the near future. Tom Mather, Crufts Chairman, said: “We are very disappointed that we have had to cancel Crufts for the first time since 1954, in what would have been its 130th anniversary year, and it is a decision we have not taken lightly. “We have tried desperately hard to make this year’s show happen, including the decision we took last November to postpone the event to July. However, of course this was before we were hit by the devastating second wave of the pandemic. “When this decision was taken, we were optimistic that the situation would be such that the show could be held. However we appreciated that there was a possibility that holding the show in the summer under certain restrictions could also, in some respects, do the show a disservice. We were disappointed that, even though we carried over the qualification from 2020, we would still be limited on our entry numbers and wouldn’t be able to welcome as many dogs back as we would have liked. “It would also be regrettable that there was a strong possibility that many of the popular events and features of the show, such as obedience, the Good Citizen Dog Scheme, Young Kennel Club ring and Discover Dogs, would not have been able to be included under the restrictions which could be imposed. “Finally, in light of recent announcements and the emergence of a third wave of coronavirus in Europe, it was looking extremely unlikely that both our overseas judges and exhibitors would be able to attend.” Further discussions will be taking place regarding the impact of the cancellation of Crufts over the next couple of months, such as the qualification criteria for Crufts 2022 for all disciplines, including the Young Kennel Club. The Kennel Club appreciates that judges from this year’s show will be very disappointed and the committee will be looking at the options to invite them to judge at a future Crufts and 24 | Total Grooming Magazine

Itchy dog: Shampoos and Rinses
Groomer and herbalist, Jitka Krizova, shares her natural approach to bathing and grooming dogs with allergic reactions:
O
ver the last few decades, we’ve seen more and more dogs with allergic dermatitis, food intolerances and immunemediated diseases. We can try to limit the causes to a certain point and we can give the dog prescribed medication, however, this usually only provides short-term relief or improvement. Inevitably it will rear its ugly head again sooner or later. There is, however, one thing dog owners can do at home to help their itchy dog… bath, bath and bath again. I bet in the past you’ve heard that you shouldn’t bath your dog often, perhaps even at all? This was quite common a few years ago, especially with terrier people who believed terriers were not supposed to be bathed at all. Shampoos, in the past, were largely based on tar and sulphur but they have come a far way since then. Bathing itchy dogs at home or even in a salon is very effective, cheap and the sensible thing to do in order to remove the allergens from the coat and skin. Bathing provides immediate relief and the guideline is to bath your itchy dog at least once a week. The key is to choose your shampoo wisely. Go for a natural shampoo, containing coconut oil, argan oil, charcoal, jojoba oil, neem oil, calendula oil and essential oils like lavender, peppermint and chamomile. Read the label carefully because some shampoos contain natural and/or organic ingredients but can still contain some toxic chemicals.

Make Your Own Shampoo If you’d like to do some DIY you can even make your own shampoo from soap nuts! Soap nuts (sometimes called “soap berries”) are probably the most sustainable cleaning product we can get. What are they? They’re an allnatural, plant-based product (they grow on a tree) they are easy to grow organically and require very little processing or packaging. Soap nuts are naturally hypoallergenic, odourless, highly effective and gentle at the same time. There are countless ideas on how to use them, making them sustainable and versatile. Soap nut fruits actually contain a natural soap called saponin, which is released when they come into contact with water. Here’s how you can make your own shampoo which doubles up as a
cleaning product as well! Add a hand full of soap nuts to 3 cups of water and simmer for 30 minutes then let it cool down and strain it. You can then use this liquid to clean your kitchen floors, etc and you can even freeze it! An idea is to make ice cubes and then add them to your bucket of water to wash the floor. If you put the liquid in the blender you get a nice silky, foamy liquid that can be used as a 100% natural shampoo for you and your dog. Just be careful to avoid the eyes as it really stings. As this product is all natural with no preservatives it won’t last long, in fact, only a couple of days in the fridge. I’d recommend making a fresh batch every time you need to bath a dog.

Or Make Your Own Another way to soothe itchy skin and balance the skin’s pH level, is to make an apple cider vinegar & green tea rinse: ½ cup green tea; cooled down ½ cup apple cider vinegar 1 cup distilled or boiled water cooled down
Mix it all up well. Wash the dog as usual and rinse well with plenty of clean water. Apply the pre-made rinse on the dog’s coat and skin, massaging it in well. You can rinse it off or leave it on the coat and it can then work as a bug, fly and flea repellent as well! You can keep the mixture in the fridge, in a closed jar, for about a week or two but if it gets mouldy, don’t use it!
No Time to Make Your Own … Don’t worry there are lots of kind, natural shampoos out there. Tina Twist of Happy Dogs in Shropshire tried Anicura’s shampoo and conditioner. She used it on a dog that suffers with allergic skin issues and his owner was delighted with the result. Tina said: “It lathered up really well and had a faint, fresh lavender scent. Best of all it rinsed away really easily without leaving any residue.”

Wearing a Mask – to do or die! Personal responsibility: where do you stand legally if you don’t wear a mask? By Amanda Hamilton, NALP 30 | Total Grooming Magazine
W
ith numbers of vaccinations exceeding 70 million, some people believe that we are close to back-to-normal and a life without masks. But that is not the case as the Government guidelines still recommend both mask wearing and social distancing. So, if you take the decision not to continue with mask wearing, and you contract Covid—or worse, you are a carrier and pass it on to someone else— whose fault is it, and can you be held legally liable? The law will naturally be vague over this issue as we have yet to experience such a case. It would be expected that there would be difficulties in pinpointing who has passed on the virus or from which location the virus was contracted, however, having taken the step to refrain from mask wearing, you may be the only person to do so, and the finger may easily point at you. So, the question is whether you can be held liable in law? The simple answer is probably in the negative. The reason for this is that there is no law making it mandatory to wear masks, it is simply a guideline suggested by the Government in order to keep people as safe as possible. But, could it be a civil wrong? The answer to that is, maybe. The fact that there is no crime committed, as there is no statute stating that mask wearing is mandatory, does not prevent someone who believes they have a claim against another individual from suing that individual through the civil courts, perhaps claiming negligence (not wearing a mask) that has caused personal injury (contracting Covid). Winning such an action, gives rise to the automatic remedy of damages (compensation). Furthermore, the burden of proof is a lower burden than that of a criminal action. The burden in a civil action is that the claimant must prove their case on ‘a balance of probabilities’, whereas the burden of proof in a criminal action is that the prosecution must prove their case ‘beyond any reasonable doubt’. If it is clear, therefore, that an individual is not wearing a mask

amongst hundreds of others who are, then it is likely that the finger will be pointed at that person. So, is it worth risking not wearing a mask? Despite the large numbers of people that have been vaccinated, it is vital to remember that the vaccination does NOT prevent you from contracting the virus. We should therefore be sensible, and responsible to those around us and wait until the figures are zero, both for
infections and fatalities, for a number of weeks, or perhaps even months, before we take the decision to refrain from wearing a mask or social distancing. However, if you do run into legal difficulties, then a paralegal can help and will be considerably more cost effective than a solicitor. Paralegals are legally trained, can do many (but not all) of the same jobs as a solicitor and can assist you at a reasonable cost.

Top Tips for Keeping Your Pets Cool This Summer Summer has finally arrived. However, now we are tasked with keeping dogs cool. Animed Direct have provided some helpful hints for keeping our barking friends cool and breezy: 1. Take your walks early or late in the day At midday, the sun is at its peak and while that might be pleasant for you in your hat, shorts, and sun cream the tarmac you’re both walking on will be at its hottest, so it’s much less fun for your furry friend. Before you leave for your walk put the back of your hand or barefoot on the pavement for 7 seconds. There’s a good saying to remember here: if it’s too hot for your hands, it’s too hot for their paws.
2. Give them plenty to drink – and more Just like humans, pets need much more access to water in hot conditions in order to stay hydrated. Sometimes they’ll need a little nudge to encourage them to drink more, so a second water bowl away from their food bowl might be the solution. It’s worth mentioning that some pets prefer running water, especially when it’s warmer as stagnant hot water can’t be too thirst-quenching! Luckily, there are plenty of water fountains for dogs available on the market.
3. NEVER leave your pet in a parked car We’ve all seen the videos of windows getting smashed because neglectful owners have left their pets in a stationary car, that’s because this is a dangerous thing to do. How Will Your SEISS Grant be Taxed? Tax Preparation Specialist Offers Guidance for Those Receiving Self Employment Grant
W
ith the closure date for the fourth round of the government’s SEISS scheme now past, many of the UK’s self-employed have been ensuring that they take advantage of this vital lifeline for businesses adversely impacted by the Covid19 pandemic. However, with much confusion surrounding how the grants should be accounted for and how they will be taxed, David Redfern, tax preparation expert and director of DSR Tax Refunds Ltd, offers his specialist

guidance for those in receipt of the grants. Self-employed workers who have experienced an adverse effect on their ability to trade due to the Covid19 pandemic have until Tuesday 1st June 2021 to claim the fourth grant in the SEISS (Self Employment Income Support Scheme). SEISS 1 to 3 have already closed to new claims and eligibility for the latest scheme remains similar to previous grants. Redfern explains, “If you are self-employed and your business has been ‘adversely
affected’ by the pandemic you may be eligible to claim the grant, providing that you have already submitted your tax returns for tax years including 2019/20 on or before 2nd March 2021 and that you traded in tax years 2019/20 and 2020/21 and you intend to continue to trade into tax year 2021/22. You must meet HMRC’s profit conditions and have experienced a period of adversity between 1st February 2021 and 30th April 2021”. HMRC’s profit conditions require that any SEISS claimant must have
trading profits between nil and £50,000 in previous tax years between 2016/17 and 2019/20 and that trading profits are equal to at least 50% of income in those years. Providing a claimant is eligible, they will be able to claim SEISS grant 4 until Tuesday, with the fifth round of the scheme due to open in late July 2021. In order to claim the grant, they will need to use HMRC’s online process. They will need their UTR (unique taxpayer reference), National Insurance number as well as details of their Government Gateway ID and bank account. Redfern states “Self employed individuals are required by HMRC to apply for the grants themselves and tax agents can’t claim on behalf of their clients. However, HMRC does recognise that for some self-employed people, extra help is needed from their tax agent to make a successful claim and as a result, tax agents can support the client in preparing the claim but the client will need to make the actual claim themselves via their Government Gateway login”. Once claimed, HMRC will then inform the taxpayer whether their claim has been successful. 44 | Total Grooming Magazine
SEISS grants are subject to income tax and Class 4 National Insurance contributions but as they are grants, not loans, they are not intended to be repaid unless the claimant is ineligible to receive a grant that has already been paid. SEISS grants 1 to 3 are taxable within the 2020/21 tax year with subsequent SEISS grants to be taxable within the tax year in which they are received, regardless of the financial year-end of the business. Redfern explains “The amount that a self-employed worker receives via the SEISS scheme should be treated as income and accounted for on their Self Assessment tax return, just as any other income would be but those claiming should note that if they are also claiming Universal Credit, the amount of SEISS income they receive may impact on the amount of Universal Credit they receive”. Where a taxpayer has received a grant they believe they are not entitled to, they must notify HMRC within 90 days of receipt and make arrangements to repay it. However, eligibility decisions are based on the facts available at the time of the claim and if those circumstances

o, can dogs eat vegan and vegetarian meals? It’s important to research what is best to give our pets considering they can’t tell us how their food is making them feel…unless you’re Dr Dolittle. Dogs evolved from wolves — spoiler alert if you didn’t already know. From this, it’s reasonable to assume that our beloved furry friends have the same digestion system as their wolf ancestors, known across the world for

their carnivorous diet. However, bear in mind that thousands of years of selective breeding has not only adapted dogs’ personalities, but their bodily processes too, including their digestive capacity. Genetic sequencing of dogs, which is essentially their DNA which makes them who they are from the colour of their fur to their personality, is significantly different to wolves in fat metabolism and starch digestion. Changes in their genes and how they’ve
accrued from the gene pool has been incredibly important in domesticating our dogs and adapting to starch-rich diets, the main carbohydrate in plants. When the agricultural revolution took place between the 16th and 19th centuries thanks to technology, there was a lot more plant-based foods available for us to consume, increasing dietary starch in both us and our dogs. And like animals do, they adapted! Humans have saliva to help break down starch, and while dogs don’t,

their stomachs are more acidic, which helps the stomach to digest protein and kill bacteria in meat. Consider a dog’s appearance too, with their defined canine teeth that make them physically carnivorous. However, unlike cats, dogs aren’t obligate carnivores. By this, we mean that dogs have adapted more to eating plant-based foods than cats have, although they still eat meat. It’s important to note that carbohydrates aren’t essential for cats or dogs because they can derive enough energy from amino acids in proteins. However, both animals can gain energy from carbohydrates, particularly dogs.
So, can we remove meat? There isn’t an awful lot of research exploring how well dogs can cope with vegan and vegetarian diets. What research does exist suggests that dogs can survive with vegetarian diets, but will they thrive? The main issue however is that they will have lower or absent levels of essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals found in meat. You want to make sure your dog is getting all the nutrients possible from a diet that is healthy for their digestive system and requirements, not yours. In terms of vegetarian dog food and how plants’ nutrients vary, they should be supplemented with synthetic amino acids, vitamins, and minerals to be nutritional for our dogs — as with any pet food.
Vitamins Dogs cannot produce vitamin D3 in their bodies and dogs can’t get this vitamin from plant-based foods or sunlight. But animal sources like meat, fish, and eggs provide our canine friends with the much-needed vitamin. Vitamin D2 is taken from plants, however, it has less of a biological effect than D3. It’s important that dogs have a healthy intake of vitamin D for their bones as it is essential for calcium and phosphorus. Likewise, vitamin B12 isn’t present in plant nutrients but dairy and eggs, and must be supplemented in vegan diets due to its positive effects on the health 48 | Total Grooming Magazine
of bodily functions, including the canine nervous system.
Minerals A dog on a meatfree diet can become deficient in calcium, iron, phosphorus, and zinc. It’s important to note that in plant phosphorus is a compound called phytate, which is an anti-nutrient that can reduce the biological effect of calcium, iron, and zinc from other foods. So, make sure that plant sources contain easily absorbed minerals and nutrients for your dog.
Amino acids The building blocks of proteins — essential and non-essential amino acids vary between species. In simple terms, non-essential amino acids can be produced by the animal if ingesting the correct amount and mix of other amino acids. Essential amino acids can’t be synthesised by the dog and must be obtained through food. Most amino acids can be obtained from plants however some plants can be poor sources of amino acids such as methionine, a crucial amino acid to dogs. This again is evidence for why supplementation is necessary for meatfree dogs.
Fatty acids A vegetarian dog diet can be low in n-3 fatty acids including DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which are extremely important in supporting a healthy brain and nervous system development in puppies. Typically, puppies get DHA from their mother’s milk and good supplementation of fish oils. Domesticating dogs has resulted in us weaning puppies off milk earlier than they would in the wild, it’s important to consider post-weaning nutritional deficiencies that can occur
from vegan and vegetarian diets in puppies, so it’s recommended to never feed them a vegetarian or vegan diet. So, to conclude a lengthy yet important message — dogs have been adapted to eat both meat and plants. Just because a dog can live on a vegetarian or vegan diet, it doesn’t necessarily mean they should. If you decide to feed your dog a vegan or vegetarian diet, supplementing carefully and accurately can balance these diets. Vegetarian diets are easier to manage because dogs will benefit from animal products like eggs and it is harder to make sure a vegan diet is meeting the nutrients essential to your dog. There isn’t any research to support the claim that dogs can cope on meatfree diets in the long-term — although they might survive, will they thrive? If you’re considering making the shift for your furry friend, do so with caution and make sure you’re up-to-date on all knowledge and research.
