News and Product Round-up See Change Launches Plastic-free Shampoo

T

he new Original Dog Shampoo Bar meets the needs of eco-savvy dog owners and grooming salons and makes a great addition to the thriving natural category, particularly post COVID when the effects of reduced travel and industry on the environment have been a real focus of attention. This premium product is ideal for professional use by groomers. With 82% of Brits aiming to reduce their plastic waste and around half of us prepared to pay more for eco-friendly packaging*, there is a clear demand for eco products. Catherine Milne, Founder at See Change Now says, ‘There are plenty of drivers for people wanting to make more sustainable choices, but knowing where to start can be overwhelming. Our plasticfree shampoo bars make one of those decisions really simple and it’s an easy change to make.’ The Original Dog Shampoo bars are made in the UK from all-natural ingredients that match the highest standards for human cosmetics, so they are a great option for pooches with sensitive skin. Catherine explains, ‘The product is enriched with Argan oil and is super gentle, while still being effective – even on a pet who loves a good roll around in the mud! Shampoo bars are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to liquid shampoo because of the reduction in packaging.’ The Original Dog Shampoo Bar contains 100% pure essential oils – Cedar Wood, Ginger, Vetiver and Sweet Marjoram to combat pet odours with a scent that dog owners will love. The 230g bar lasts three times longer than traditional shampoo and comes in a handy and very attractive sisal bag, retailing at a recommended price of £15.99.

Digging deep to help animals in need

P

et food manufacturers and suppliers of animal care products have donated £110,000 worth of food and products to help animal welfare charities who are struggling due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. In April the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes (ADCH), the umbrella body for companion animal rescue organisations, set up an Emergency Fund to provide support to animal rescues to help get them through the crisis. In response, pet food manufacturers have contributed emergency food supplies with Mars Petcare, Purina, Naturediet, IAMS, Forthglade and AJM Pet Products supplying over 65 pallets of dog and cat food. In addition, Pet Remedy have provided over £17,000 worth of products to help animals who are staying longer than usual in animal welfare shelters, Protectapet have contributed security fencing, Animal Courses Direct are

offering dog first aid webinars for Continuing Professional Development and Royal Canin are offering donations of food direct to ADCH members. The donations are being distributed to charities across the country who are members of the ADCH with larger organisations such as RSPCA, Dogs Trust, Cats Protection and the National Animal Welfare Trust providing regional collection points for local charities. Claire Horton, Chairman of the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes said: “There are around 1200 dog and cat rescue organisations across the UK and the Republic of Ireland, a significant number of whose very survival is threatened by the impact of coronavirus. The ADCH Emergency Fund has been set up to help these rescues get through this crisis and avert potentially catastrophic consequences for animals in urgent need in the UK.” In an emergency survey* carried out

by the ADCH amongst its membership, every single organisation had seen a downturn in income and over half said fundraising income had already reduced by over 50%. In addition, just 52% of members said they had three months of income and reserves remaining, whilst 32% had less than three months, and some significantly less than this. Claire added: “We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated these vital supplies to help out smaller animal welfare organisations who are struggling at this difficult time. “Our absolute priority is to do everything we can to make sure animal welfare charities can continue to provide the animals in their care with everything they need until it is time for them to find their forever homes. Thanks to industry partners we have been able to help rescues across the country continue their vital work.”

New Visor Developed for Pet Groomers

R

iverside Medical has spent the past few months working with the University of Derby to develop a face shield in response to the national shortage of PPE within the healthcare sectors. This has been tested and approved by the British Standards Institution (BSI) and the CE mark has been awarded. The company is now able to offer this outside of the healthcare arena. The Shield is produced at the factory in Derby. Over 85% of materials used are sourced from the UK. Matt Roe, Managing Director, said: “We see this as one solution to assist with social distancing as Britain returns to work - ‘The Shield’ can be the solution. “We have received a great amount of interest from dog groomers who have also found this useful in protecting the eyes, nose and mouth from pet hair whilst maintaining excellent vision.” For more information visit www.theshield.co.uk where you can request a free sample, find out more information and order on-line.

Boris’ popularity up 350% – when it comes to dogs’ names

N

ow that Boris Johnson has relaxed the rules giving us more time out and about, it’s likely that while we’re enjoying more exercise, we’ll hear his name more, too. Agria Pet Insurance has seen a significant rise in puppies named Boris since the news broke that Boris Johnson was diagnosed with COVID-19. And, as our Prime Minister became progressively ill, and the numbers of cases in the UK continued to rise, so has 8 | www.christiesdirect.com

the popularity of the name among the nation’s puppies. In fact, compared with the same period last year, there has been a 350% increase in dogs being insured with Agria Pet Insurance named Boris. Fittingly, to tie in with Boris Johnson’s ‘bulldog spirit’, the top dogs to be named in his honour were Bulldogs. The specialist pet insurer has also reported Boxers, Labradors and Jack Russells were some of the other top breeds being insured with them

following the trend. A kitten called ‘Corona’ and several dogs named ‘Covi’ have also appeared for the first time. Tom Vaughan, Head of Marketing at Agria Pet Insurance, says, “Changes in the popularity of the names of the nation’s dogs is always fascinating. Seeing so many little Boris’ registered with us recently, as well as the breeds that are most likely to be named after the Prime Minister, is a great marker of the impact of this time.”

Rescues to the Rescue

Battersea Celebrates the Dogs and Cats Who Helped their Owners Through Lockdown

R

escue pet owners nationwide have revealed that their dogs and cats are the ones that rescued them during lockdown. New research by much-loved animal charity Battersea shows that 75% of Brits say their rescue pet helped them cope during the nationwide quarantine - whether it was providing temporary relief from the news cycle, making an unscheduled cameo in their 10th video conference call of the day, or just being there for cuddles on the sofa when it all got a bit too much. More than 1,000 people submitted video clips and pictures of their rescue dogs and cats brightening up their lockdown lives for use in for Battersea’s new Rescues to the Rescue advert backed by Battersea Ambassadors Paul O’Grady and Amanda Holden. In it the charity celebrates the laughter, joy and comfort rescue pets are bringing their owners and asks people for their support to enable Battersea to continue to care for dogs and cats still looking for their second chance. Battersea’s Rehoming and Welfare Manager, Becky MacIver, said: “The devotion and companionship our rescue pets provided is more important than ever. Every day we heard stories from owners saying how much of a difference their rescue pet has made to their lives. There are so many rescue dogs and cats helping their owners right now – and many more who are still waiting for their chance in rescue centres across the UK. Now more than ever, Battersea needs support to help us be here for every dog and cat that needs

us”. • Naomi Hannah, 43, of south-west London, adopted mongrel Potato from Battersea in 2017. She said: “Potato loved having us all around. He’s a great distraction from the news cycle and it’s amazing for the kids. My stepson has special needs and Potato is like his therapy dog. It’s been hard for him to adjust to what’s been going on, but Potato has provided some consistency for him.” Speaking about his own lockdown companions, Battersea Ambassador Paul O’Grady said: “I would never have predicted I’d find myself locked down with four dogs but I couldn’t choose better company. I can always rely on them to put a smile on my face, no matter how bleak the news is. They’ve made my life a bit brighter while I’ve been in isolation and I’m thankful for

that.” Last year Battersea helped over 5,000 animals across its three centres, as well as using its expertise, influence and voice to help thousands more all over the country and across the world. However, like all charities, Battersea is facing a significant drop in income as a direct impact of coronavirus and is reliant on the generosity of the public to continue to fund its vital work helping dogs and cats and the people who care for them. More than ever before, the charity needs support to enable it to continue to be here for wonderful, imperfect, worthit rescue dogs and cats. Grooming Van of the Year

The Portable Palace Created from our Revolutionary insulated panel, the Palace provides groomers with unrivalled benefits never seen before in the industry! This amazing new concept was born due to our lining's incredible lifespan - they often out live the vans they were placed in - so we created a demountable pod where your business can be moved on to the next chassis easily when needed - or if you no longer wish to be mobile, you can demount the pod and work from your garden!

• • • • • • • •

As the chassis ages, the Palace can be removed and placed onto a brand new chassis - resulting in a much cheaper cost than having to buy a whole new van and conversion with next to no downtime If the chassis is involved in an accident or breaks down you can simply remove the body, place it on the ground and work from your driveway whilst you wait for it to be repaired. The lining will not out live the vehicle like so often seen with used van conversions. You then have to sell the van & conversion and then buy a new van and conversion and wait whilst it is converted. Whereas with the Palace, you can keep the pod forever and change the chassis as you need to. Once you choose to retire from mobile grooming you can remove the Palace, sell the chassis and work from the Palace in your garden instead of having to buy a parlour or convert a room in your house. When you choose to move home, you can take the pod with you and this portability combined with the size means they will not normally require planning permission in your garden. You never need to buy a Brand new chassis that can depreciate - simply buy used a chassis and then swap them out as they get too old. Smaller than its LWB Van equivalent but provides a more workable space inside that is highly customisable as there are no van strutts or vehicle constraints Can be driven on a normal car driving license Say goodbye to having to buy a whole new van and conversion every few years - simply move your Palace from one chassis to another with zero down time and when the time comes and you no longer want to be mobile, simply

A Post-Pandemic Grooming World

Top groomer and competitor, Joanne Angus of Look North, shares her thoughts on Covid 19 and resuming grooming:

A

s the clock struck midnight on 31st December 2019 no one could have predicted the extraordinary twists and turns 2020 was going to bring us! Starting off in its usual sedentary way plodding along through the cold, dark winter months of January and February then, Bang! With preparations for the world’s greatest dog show, Crufts, in full swing we were introduced to coronavirus. This virus reared its ugly head and began to threaten our everyday lives let alone with our gatherings and shows. There were questions as to whether Crufts would go ahead but to the delight of many it did. It was a quieter show with a lot of people not wanting to risk any chance of contracting the virus and staying away. For those who attended it was the start of the now familiar hand washing routine. The following two weeks were full of news on the spread and problem of this new and lethal virus, the anticipation of how the government would deal with the safety of the country and our NHS was the focus of everyone’s conversations. Then the evening of Monday 23rd March arrived, and the Prime Minister declared that the country had to go into lockdown! For much of the country this meant businesses and schools were to close for an indefinite period. As we now find ourselves emerging from the 12 weeks of lockdown, how do we as groomers cope? The backlog of clients and overgrown dogs is the hardest to get through but with

16 | Total Grooming Magazine

dedication the grooming world is back up and running. Along with everyone else in society we have had to make changes to the way we work and install new and safe working procedures. The old guiding motto of ‘be prepared’ is the best way to deal with these changes. Wearing face masks, gloves and aprons and using litres of disinfectant and hand sanitiser is now the norm, always have your PPE ready to bring dogs into the salon. Bathing the dog first is now the suggested routine (although it has always been that way for me) and a lot of groomers may be concerned about removing knots and tangles first. With the array of amazing products available on the market and a high-quality blaster and dryer there really is no need to worry. Use your conditioners and blaster to work the coat open, clip out the worse of the knots in delicate areas such as armpits and behind the ears and dry as normal. Respecting social distancing rules whilst dealing with customers must be done and as such electronic payments are the easiest option, contactless cards now accept up to £45 and bank transfer is easy for most. The impact on everyone in these difficult times has made communication with friends and peers an absolute must. Zoom meetings have become the regular ‘let’s meet ‘place and webinars have become the new learning style. I think we have all learnt that technology is a vital part of our lives and love it or loathe it is here to stay! I actually quite enjoyed the break

Bathing the dog first is recommended

and have found since returning to work I appreciate being a groomer and relish the challenge of restyling the hairy dogs! The whole world has been affected by this pandemic and we must remember we are not alone in our transition to a different working world.

Why dog obesity is a growing issue

F

or many pets lockdown has been a wonderful time spent doing many more walks with owners who are keen to get outdoors. However, for others it has meant more treats and, in some cases, more meals and box set bingeing with owners. This has added to pet obesity. We’re a nation of dog lovers, dedicating a lot of time and effort to make sure our pets live the best lives they can. Ultimately, we’re responsible for them, including their diet and exercise. And unfortunately, we seem to be letting our pets down a little. Overweight dogs are becoming more common. In fact, the latest research from Direct Line shows that between 2018-19, 1.7 million dog owners were told by a vet their pets are overweight. According to the vets questioned, part of the problem is that owners are often unaware about the health issues associated with the weight of their pets. In fact, some of the most common weight-related misconceptions owners have are: • Overfeeding or giving treats is a way of showing love (54%) • Vets are being overly cautious when it comes to pets’ weights (50%) • You can feed your pet more as long as it’s high quality food (47%)

What you can do if your dog is overweight To make sure you know whether your dog is in good shape or not, average weights for breeds are often used. But these can be misleading. Instead, you can look at your dog’s body shape at home, as recommended by The Blue Cross: 18 | Total Grooming Magazine

• Can you see a potbelly? • Can you see your dog’s waist when you look at them from above? • Can you feel their ribs at all? If you think they’ve got a large belly, you can’t see a waist (where they go in after the ribcage), or their ribs are difficult to feel, it’s time to act. You might also notice changes in their behaviour. They could get out of breath easily, sleep a lot, or be uninterested in going for a walk. If you think your dog is overweight, it’s your responsibility as their owner to make changes to their lifestyle. It’s most likely that too much food and too little exercise are the reasons your dog has put on weight. Getting them to lose that weight will involve more exercise and taking a look at their diet, but you can always consult with a vet to make sure you’re making the right choices for the right reasons.

Tips for their diet Dog owners and experts often have varying opinions about the choice of dog food, which can make it confusing

20 | Total Grooming Magazine

when you’re trying to assess and pick the right diet. But generally it’s more important to choose quality ingredients than whether it’s wet, dry or raw food. Ideally, you want to avoid foods which have ingredients that are heavy in grain, preservatives and artificial flavourings. Instead, look for higher percentages of premium meat and vegetables. A small amount of good fats and oils are recommended for dogs too. As well as potentially changing their food, it’s also about quantity – so make sure you: • Weigh or measure their food. Don’t rely on your eye to judge how much to give them. Follow the feeding guidelines and give your dog the correct portion. • Watch how many treats you’re giving them. It’s one of the main reasons for overfeeding, so don’t give out too many. And choose your treats wisely, as many can be full of additives. • Get the whole household involved. It’s no good one person making all the

effort if someone else’s actions undo it. Make sure you don’t fall for those puppy dog eyes and assume they’ve not been fed without checking. • Change their bowl. Some dogs are generally greedy and will eat really quickly. But you can buy bowls designed to make it harder for them to pick up huge bites. This should slow them down when they eat. You might also want to look at your dog’s exercise routine. Of course, it may vary between breeds and ages, but most dogs enjoy a daily walk and many will run around and exercise themselves when they’re taken out. But if you’re looking to increase their exercise in an effort to help them lose weight, consider taking a toy with you to keep them active throughout the walk. This can be helpful in smaller spaces and at home in the garden. Walking with another dog could also encourage your dog to use up more energy as they run around together. How do you keep your dog at a healthy weight? Share your tips and recommendations with us.

Fleas – a groomer’s worst nightmare?

Flea infestations are something groomers try to avoid at all costs. Beware the new client that books their dog in for a long session because their coat is ‘tangled.’ All too often groomers discover they have taken on more than they bargained for but why are fleas so feared? About fleas: Fleas are parasites that feed on blood. Fleas can live on any warm-blooded animal, but seem to prefer to live on humans, cats, dogs and rodents. They can also infest pet bedding, carpets, blankets.

So why are fleas so feared? Fleas are best known for spreading the Bubonic Plague. They also transmit the bacterial disease murine typhus to humans through infected rats. Their saliva is an allergen that can cause allergic reactions in pets and humans. Fleas can also transfer tapeworms and cause anemia in pets. Flea bites cause painful, itchy red bumps.

Case study: Last year, a salon on the Welsh border accepted a booking from a new client whose dog was in a ‘tangled state.’ The reality was that the dog was literally crawling with fleas. Salon owner Tina was faced with a dilemma: should she return the dog without treating it or treat it and sort out the issue and risk salon infestation? She decided to treat the poor pet who was suffering from flea allergies as a result of his problem. Luckily, she is situated adjacent to a local veterinary practice, so she took every precaution to limit any damage to her salon – moving dogs into other premises and enlisted the help of a veterinary nurse in treating the dog in question. The owners claimed no knowledge of the problem. Tina spent hours resolving the poor dog’s issues, knowing that she wouldn’t be able to recoup all of her costs and lost time but convinced that this was the only way the dog would have any chance of becoming free of fleas and healthy once more. She gave the owners strict instructions on how to keep him free of fleas in future.

22 | Total Grooming Magazine

Flea fact file: Fleas transport themselves on rodents and other mammals, and usually remain on their hosts at all times. The most common species is the cat flea, which often feasts on cats, dogs and humans. Fleas do not fly. Instead, they jump from one place to another. In fact, fleas can jump as high as 8” vertically, which is 150 times their own height. If we could do this, we would be able to leap over skyscrapers! • Size: 1/12” to 1/6” • Shape: Flat • Color: Dark, reddish brown • Legs: 6 • Wings: No • Antenna: Yes • Clean and vacuum frequently to keep areas flea-free. Give dogs lots of baths, regular flea and tick treatments. There are natural products now available that can also help to keep these pests at bay.

Scotland Leads the Way

Scotland Clamps Down on Animal Abusers as Maximum Sentence for Animal Cruelty is Raised to Five Years

L

eading animal welfare charity Battersea has praised the Scottish Government and MSPs from across Parliament for delivering on their promise to increase maximum sentences for the worst animal cruelty offences. The Animals and Wildlife (Penalties, Protections and Powers) (Scotland) Bill first introduced in October last year, passed its third and final reading yesterday evening (17 June). For Battersea, this saw the culmination of many years of campaigning to raise Scotland’s maximum sentences to five years, in line with many other countries in Europe. The charity first launched its campaign to increase maximum sentencing in Scotland in 2017 and have been encouraged by the Scottish Government’s commitment to this change in law. This Bill will raise the maximum sentence for animal cruelty in Scotland from 12 months to five years, and will become the law after it receives Royal Assent. Research published by Battersea in 2017 showed that the maximum sentence of 12 months for animal cruelty was among the lowest across the whole of Europe – with only five other countries having lower sentences (including England and Wales). Both fly tipping and theft carried higher sentences. Battersea’s Chief Executive, Claire Horton CBE, said: “We’re thrilled to see this Bill make such quick progress. The Scottish Government has sent out a clear message that Scotland 24 | Total Grooming Magazine

Neglect

will not tolerate the most heinous animal cruelty crimes and will respond accordingly. This change in law will protect innocent animals and act as a proper deterrent to those who abuse and mistreat animals. “We have been campaigning for this change for a very long time alongside Scottish SPCA, other rescue organisations and many thousands of Scots who have written to their MSPs and called for this on social media. This change would not have happened without everyone’s support. Now we desperately need England and Wales to follow in the Scots’ footsteps.” In England and Wales, where the maximum punishment is the lowest in Europe at just six months, the Westminster Bill has been postponed yet again; despite the Government first

pledging its support almost three years ago. Battersea has been calling on the Government in England and Wales to follow Scotland’s example and progress this much-needed legislation. The Bill has been published twice before but fell during the prorogation of Parliament in October 2019, and a second time when a general election was called in December. A Private Member’s Bill brought in by Chris Loder MP is currently seeking to introduce these measures, but earlier this week it was delayed until 23 October, five months after its original date for discussion in Westminster. Pets providing emotional support First-of-its-kind international study explores impact of confinement on pets and owners

C

ats and dogs are providing essential emotional support for isolated owners during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a first-of-its-kind, indepth study exploring the impact the confinement is having on pets and people. The study revealed the confinement had had an emotional impact on around 60% of UK households, with a similar percentage (58%) of pet owners saying they had received more comfort and support from their pets now than before the pandemic. Almost half (45%) of dog owners and over half (53%) of cat owners cuddle or hug and talk to their pets more often, and 15% more regularly share secrets with their pet that they wouldn’t tell anyone else. The research, which has so far surveyed more than 8000 households in the UK, Spain and Italy, was led by veterinary behaviourists Dr Jon Bowen from the Royal Veterinary College (London) and Dr Jaume Fatjó from the Affinity Foundation for Animals and Health, Autonomous University of Barcelona, in collaboration with pet tech company Sure Petcare. Dr Jon Bowen from the RVC, said: “In this study we found that pets are counteracting quite a lot of the pressure people are currently facing, helping them to get through the confinement. “The level of positive support people are getting from their pets is helping to mitigate the effects of the lifestyle changes and emotional stresses that are harming people’s quality of life.” “Our study has shown just how quickly 26 | Total Grooming Magazine

people have turned to their animals as a major source of comfort and security when they are away from family and friends.” The study also found that while owners were getting much-needed support from their pets during the confinement, more than a third (37%) of dogs were coping less well showing increased signs of stress, nervousness, irritability, frustration or attentionseeking. Dr Bowen said: “Dogs with existing behaviour problems or with a worse ownerevaluated quality of life are less likely to cope with the confinement. “There are many reasons why a pet might be struggling during this time. Some may find it difficult to adjust to the lack of routine or walks, others maybe simply getting too much attention and therefore finding it hard to deal with the increased

“Fast forward a month or two and there is a real risk that the stress and anxiety signs we are seeing now will lead to more serious problem behaviour in the future. The key is to put in some preventative measures now to help them adjust as much as possible when life gets back to ‘normal’.” Another cause for concern is the increase in the number of food treats owners were giving their pets. Almost a quarter (23%) said they were giving their pets more treats since the confinement, sparking concerns over obesity issues in the weeks and months ahead. This is despite the fact that 24% of owners were worried about the levels of exercise they were able to give their pet. “These new habits may be hard to break,” said Dr Bowen. “Pets will come to expect more food treats, and it will be hard for owners to stop giving them after the confinement.” Pet owners are already looking ahead to the problems they may face after the lockdown, with 30% of dog owners being concerned about how their pets would adapt to ‘normal’ life after the confinement. Other key findings from the UK research: • 54% are playing with their dogs more now than before the confinement. • 41% said their dog and 46% said their cat helped them get through tough times more now than before the confinement. • 42% of dog owners and 49% of cat owners were worried about having access to veterinary medicines and treatment. • Dogs were going on 22% fewer walks, and walks were about 25% shorter. • 63% of households reported a worsening of their quality of life. • 56% felt the impact of the confinement had had a strongly negative emotional impact on their household. Dr Bowen concluded: “We wanted to bring our findings to the attention of those with dogs and cats so they can be aware and prepared for some of the issues they may face with their pets during and post lockdown. 28 | Total Grooming Magazine

“Pets don’t understand what is happening. It’s important to remain calm around them and stick to your preconfinement routine as much as you can or adapt in ways that will work for you and your pet. This will help alleviate further anxiety and negative behaviour.”

Research methodology The research, which looks at the impact of the confinement on pets, people and the relationship between them, was carried out online in April and May 2020 by veterinary behaviourists Dr Jon Bowen from the Royal Veterinary College and Jaume Fatjó, Affinity Foundation for Animals and Health, Autonomous University of Barcelona in collaboration with Sure Petcare. More than 4500 dog and cat owners in the UK, 1500 in Spain and 2000 in Italy have taken part so far, making it one of the largest pieces of academic research of its kind. The study will be ongoing throughout the confinement period, with data and insights regularly updated. Research will also be carried out in France and the USA in the coming weeks. Resuming Grooming in the Coronavirus World Tina Cummings runs a grooming salon called Happy Dogs in Craven Arms, Shropshire. She was in lockdown for around eight weeks and has recently emerged and resumed grooming after clients’ dogs began to suffer from a lack of grooming attention.

W

ith a town centre premises, Tina was lucky to benefit from a government grant offered to those people with premises who paid business rates. She admits this helped enormously but she was keen to resume her salon activities, especially after calls from desperate clients saying that their dogs’ coats were becoming matted. She said: “I followed the Defra advice from the beginning and initially, felt it was going to be quite complicated to resume my grooming work. During lockdown it was great to spend more time with my own dogs and with such lovely weather, they were really spoiled. “During this time, I advised my clients is to regularly brush, comb and bath their dogs but to avoid cutting the hair.” Tina resumed grooming in June, collecting dogs, taking them to her salon and then returning them afterwards. To minimise risks, she always kept a safe 2m distance from clients and used disposable aprons, gloves, mask and goggles. She used washable masks in order to prevent her from spreading any germs. She said: “I use aerial sanitiser on all surfaces after every client and every surface, floor, table, dryers, crates and vehicles are sanitised. I also wipe scissors, blades combs, brushes and clippers with rubbing medical alcohol. “I’ve also asked my clients to hand

their dog over on a slip lead, no harnesses etc and to ensure it has an id tag on.” The fewer items a dog is wearing the better and the lead can go in the bath with the dog. Popping a dog straight into the bath is a priority, do not get distracted or put the dog in a crate or allow to roam, they should be asked in and not carried. We have to remember that once the dog is clean then the risk is virtually eliminated, so used PPE equipment can be removed after the dog is lathered up then pop the items in a bucket of

disinfectant and dry the dog as you would normally. Once it is dry you can pop it in a sanitised crate and then disinfect bath, floor and the entrance you used. I also spray the car interior, crate then leave it to dry whilst continuing to groom the dog. Keep safe and well. Remember to check the DEFRA website regularly for updates. https://www.gov.uk/government/ organisations/department-forenvironment-food-rural-affairs

How Spending Several Minutes A Day Reduces Your Tool Repair Cost! The most important assets that every groomer has are his or her tools. It is impossible to groom without clippers, clipper blades and scissors, yet these essential tools are neglected on a daily basis. After weeks away from the salon during lockdown, it is vital to carefully check over these tools before re-opening.

T

oday, there are few grooming schools that include in their curriculum detailed instruction on the maintenance of these vital tools. Not only are your tools indispensable to providing your services, they also represent a major cost in the operation of your business. Let’s face the fact that every groomer is an independent business whether you own your salon or groom in one owned by someone else. Every groomer knows that the gross revenue coming from the customer for services provided is not income. We all know that there are many costs that have to be subtracted including the cost of maintaining tools. Unfortunately, many are not aware of how much that cost is nor are they aware of how greatly this cost can be reduced by proper maintenance. We speak from years of experience, as sharpeners, and can advise all groomers that simple regular maintenance on clippers can extend the life not only of the clipper but the blades as well. These maintenance steps require only a few minutes to perform while providing substantial savings in cost of clipper repairs and extended blade life. Did you know, that by following the proper procedure, it takes only five minutes each day to maintain these tools? We are pleased to announce a new membership website that provides the necessary course study pertaining to the tools that groomers use in their trade. Switch Blade Academy has currently developed nine learning

Good clipper maintenance will increase longevity and reduce costs

modules that include the basic concepts of clippers and clipper blades as well as providing instruction of how to properly maintain these vital tools. By following these guidelines, the groomer will significantly reduce his or hers tool maintenance cost and increase their productivity. The courses cover all of the topics listed below: • Module 1-Understanding Clipper Blade Parts • Module 2-Methods For Cleaning Clipper Blades • Module 3-What Destroys Blade Life • Module 4-Safety Issues Relating To

Preparing for Virtual Competitions Despite the strange situation we are currently living through, grooming shows are still going ahead, albeit virtual shows. Joanne Angus of Look North gives her tips on preparing for shows.

T

he same amount of preparation is required for a virtual show as it would if it was a ‘live’ show. How do you enter virtual grooming competitions? Check online for any forthcoming virtual grooming shows. Many of our students over the years have entered the competition circuit to go on to achieve great things. The one that immediately springs to mind of course is Lesley Harpham. Lesley has achieved the ultimate accolade of becoming a member of Groom Team England representing the Terrier class at the World Championships.

My top tips to prepare for competitions, yes, even virtual competitions are: 1. The quality of the dog you select is important. As a beginner the quality of the dog would be different to the quality you would need for champion level. Ideally you need to select a good breed type to enable you to get the most from your styling. As a beginner – a dog that you enjoy grooming in the salon, which behaves well on the table and looks good when you have finished, is the one to start with. As you climb the ladder then so the quality of the dog should too. 2. Research the breed so you know exactly what the standard trim should look like; even if you are clipping instead of hand stripping 34 | Total Grooming Magazine

the overall picture should be the same. Obviously in the case of cross breeds or breeds that are not trimmed for show but trimmed as pets, it’s a blank canvas and up to you how you style. 3. The key point to competing is preparation; you will never get a good finish on an ill prepared dog. This includes bathing, drying, nail and ear care, under pads and hygiene areas. Make sure the correct drying technique is used for the coat type. 4. Tools and equipment must be correct for the technique you are hoping to demonstrate. Double check that everything is sharp and always carry spares. Ensure you have the extra items you may need like anti static sprays, scissoring sprays etc and that you have tried and tested them on your selected dog’s coat . 5. Whilst trimming stick to your routine and methods and time yourself. Always have a test run at your salon before the competition to ensure you have your timings right and always allow yourself extra time for nerves! Try to get the dog finished with 10 minutes to spare which will allow you to double check your work for any tatty ends. 6. Present yourself as well as the dog. In other words ensure the dog can be seen easily and does not blend into the colour of your clothes and use a colour co-ordinated table cover to show him off.

Prepare as you would for a ‘live’ show

Good preparation is key to success

7. Above all enjoy yourself. It’s not often you get two hours to trim the dog so enjoy the experience.

Keep Caring – The Cinnamon Trust

or many elderly and vulnerable people, the lockdown resulted in being trapped in their homes for weeks with some unable to even walk their dogs. Thankfully, The Cinnamon Trust - a unique British charity that specialises in caring for pets of elderly and terminally ill - was there to help. The Cinnamon Trust is the only specialist national charity which seeks to relieve the anxieties, problems, and sometimes injustices, faced by elderly, vulnerable and terminally ill people and their pets. With a network of over 18,000 volunteers, one of the main elements of The Trust is to provide support and 36 | Total Grooming Magazine

practical help with the daily aspects of pet care, such as dog walking and veterinary visits. The charity really came into its own during the recent pandemic which saw a massive increase in demand for its services. Isabel Cude, Volunteer Co-ordinator of The Cinnamon Trust said: “Currently we have a total of 18,321 volunteers across the country and have been lucky enough to recruit an additional 1,358 volunteers during the pandemic. We have experienced a greater demand for our services during the coronavirus and, as some volunteers have stopped walking because they are high risk or they work on the front line

(for example), we needed additional volunteers to come forward. “The new volunteers we recruited helped us to maintain a high level of service during the virus. They were quickly registered with us and out walking across the country straight away. We are always looking for more volunteers nationwide for dog walking and those who might be able to foster pets for us. We do not have a specific criteria to become a volunteer, only that they are keen to help!” When the lockdown was introduced in March, thousands of elderly and vulnerable people found they were unable to leave their homes.

Linda Haddock (65) from Hayle in Cornwall, is stricken with chronic arthritis and has limited mobility, relying on crutches and a walker to move around. She was shielding through the pandemic and was assisted by volunteers from The Cinnamon Trust who walk her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, 10 year-old Bracken and help her with anything else she struggles with. She said: “A volunteer visits me every day and walks Bracken for me. He loves going off on his expeditions. highly enough. They have also helped me with my shopping and take Bracken to the vet if he needs to and to the groomers.” Linda has undergone two spinal surgery procedures in the past and Trust volunteers stepped up and fostered Bracken for her while she was in hospital. Kara Emin (26) joined the ranks of The Trust’s volunteers when she was furloughed during lockdown. She explains: “I really wanted to help out in my local community. I have always loved dogs but don’t have one myself so

this is the ideal scenario for me. “I joined as an emergency volunteer and everything was explained to me. The induction process was straight-

About Cinnamon Trust The Trust was founded in 1985 by Mrs Averil Jarvis MBE and called her charity The Cinnamon Trust in memory of her beloved Corgi named Cinnamon.

What does the Cinnamon Trust do? The Trust’s primary objective is to respect and preserve the treasured relationship between owners and their pets. To this end it works in partnership with owners to overcome any difficulties that might arise. A national network of over 18,000 community service volunteers has been established to provide practical help when any aspect of day to day care poses a problem – for example, walking the dog for a housebound owner. In addition, a national fostering service is provided for pets whose owners face a spell in hospital – volunteers take pets into their own homes and supply love and care in abundance until owner and pet can be reunited. The Cinnamon Trust also provides long term care for pets whose owners have died or moved to residential accommodation which will not accept pets. Arrangements are made between owners and The Trust well in advance, so owners do have peace of mind in the knowledge that their beloved companion will have a safe and happy future. Emergency cards are available on request. When a pet is in The Trust’s care either short term or long term because the owner is in care, the owner is kept in touch with visits, if possible, or regular photos and letters.
