News and Product Round-up Groomers’ Collaboration Results in Book on Kind Grooming Methods Dog Grooming Without Fear or Force is a new book which aims to guide dog groomers through the benefits of incorporating Tellington TTouch into the daily routine of dog grooming. Written by best friends, professional groomers and certified Tellington TTouch practitioners, Dawn Harkin and Glynis Stewart, ‘Dog Grooming Without Fear or Force: Incorporating Tellington TTouch and Other Positive Techniques’ opens up a new paradigm for groomers everywhere. Having met during their initial dog grooming training and become lifelong friends, Dawn Harkin and Glynis Stewart decided they wanted to go beyond the actual grooming itself, to learn more about canine welfare and improve the experience for their more nervous, anxious or reactive pooch clients. In an unprecedented move, the duo turned to the Tellington TTouch method, initially developed by Linda Tellington-Jones as a new way to heal, train and communicate with horses. Not only did the techniques transfer perfectly to the world of dog grooming, but Glynis and Dawn are now certified practitioners teaching the method to groomers up and down the 4 | www.christiesdirect.com
country! In ‘Dog Grooming Without Fear or Force: Incorporating Tellington TTouch and Other Positive Techniques’, any dog groomer can learn the model, how to implement it
and ensure that even their most nervous and challenging canine clients find bliss in their services. A must-have for any dog groomer wanting to learn a perfect method
for handling nervous or challenging dogs. This book has been created from a desire to make a difference to every groomer and the dogs in their care. The authors Dawn Harkin and Glynis Stewart have revolutionised their grooming processes by incorporating Tellington TTouch and other positive handling techniques to enrich the grooming experience for canine visitors. Thereby making the groomer’s job more enjoyable. Happy dog = Happy owner =Happy groomer. “Dawn and I actually run the only two Grooming Academies in the UK that teach TTouch alongside professional grooming courses,” explains Glynis. “The techniques transpose from horses to dogs with amazing fluency, and we’ve seen a huge difference in the welfare of animals we serve, as well as the owners’ reactions. Many would get upset or distressed watching their animals “suffer” the perils of grooming, but are now excited every time they come to the spa to see their best friend enjoying the process of getting some much-loved attention!” ‘Dog Grooming Without Fear or Force: Incorporating Tellington TTouch and Other Positive Techniques’ is available now: https://amzn.to/2X9MFYa.

Agria Raises £10,000 for Homeless Dogs
T
he Agria Europe-wide Dog Walk took place in May and raised £10,000 for homeless dogs. The walk took place in six countries across Europe, thousands of paws padded their way across countryside and beaches to raise money for dogs without homes. From Hermes to Helsinki, Oslo to Copenhagen, 12 locations across Sweden and even more in the UK, thousands of dogs walked a variety of stunning routes to support their local rescue; helping more dogs find forever homes. In the UK, rehoming organisations from Edinburgh to Devon took part. Every dog that walked generated a donation from Agria, and, including other fundraising activities at the events, throughout the UK an incredible £10,846 was raised for the rescues involved! As well as raising money, the
6 | www.christiesdirect.com
Agria Dog Walk also highlighted the powerful and positive links between dogs and our mental health, with many adopters from rescues across the country sharing their stories of how their adopted dog has transformed their life. From helping with loneliness, bereavement and depression, to becoming the centre of a family and boosting everyone’s mood, to being the reason to get out and socialise; time and time again, dogs – and other pets too – have shown that they can change everything. The aim of the Agria Dog Walk was to give something back, and help pets waiting for their forever homes by supporting the wonderful rescues that care for them. Howard Bridges, CEO at Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, says, “Taking part in the Agria Dog Walk has been fantastic. To see so many local dogs and owners coming to support the
Home was very special, and so greatly appreciated – and we had such a great day! Thank you to the team at Agria Pet Insurance; this really will make a difference to the animals in our care.” Simon Wheeler, Managing Director of Agria Pet Insurance, says, “Through our partnerships with many of the UK’s rescue organisations, we see how crucial it is for them to raise money to continue the incredible work they do turning around the lives of so many animals without homes. We’re so pleased that the Agria Dog Walk has been such a success and generated these much-needed funds. Thank you to everyone who made the event possible – we had a wonderful day!” If you weren’t able to join the Agria Dog Walk you can still donate to one of the rescues that took part! Battersea Receives Prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service
A
group of dedicated volunteers at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home have been named as a recipient of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK. Volunteers from the leading animal welfare charity are to receive the prestigious award in recognition of the outstanding work they do in the local community by regularly visiting the retired servicemen and women at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Volunteers started visiting the Chelsea Pensioners with Battersea dogs back in 2011 and since then a wonderful relationship has developed between the two neighbouring institutions that has had significant impact on all involved. Each month a group of Battersea dogs don their blue Battersea coats and head over the Chelsea Bridge to the Royal Hospital. There they are eagerly awaited by its famous scarlet-coated residents, retired army servicemen who relish the opportunity to interact with the dogs, whether feeding them biscuits, gently stroking them, or enjoying an enthusiastic lick on the face. The Battersea volunteers and dogs visit the pensioners in the infirmary or go into their room to keep them company and build strong relationships with everyone they meet. For many of these veterans, a visit from their four-legged friends is something to look forward to, particularly those who have owned dogs in the past but are now unable to have a pet. The companionship and joy these visits bring is also of great benefit to residents who may be lonely and without close family, and several keep dog biscuits in their rooms ready to give to their favourite Battersea dogs. Charlotte Fielder, Battersea’s Head of Volunteering, Fostering & Communities said: “Battersea is absolutely thrilled that the work of this amazing and dedicated group
10 | www.christiesdirect.com
of volunteers has been recognised with a Queens Award for Voluntary Service. We couldn’t be more proud of our caring, kind and compassionate volunteers who regularly take Battersea dogs to visit the Chelsea Pensioners, offering both human and canine companionship. It’s heart-warming to witness the joy these visits can bring”. Battersea volunteer Katie Morgan, who has been visiting the Royal Hospital Chelsea with Battersea dogs since 2011, added: “It’s a real honour to receive this award for doing something that is so beneficial for all involved. We always receive a very warm welcome
from the Chelsea Pensioners, staff, volunteers and visitors and the dogs absolutely love meeting everyone, especially as there are more than a few treats ready and waiting for them. We’ve made some wonderful friends over the years and hope to make many more.” The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and the winners are announced on 2 June, the anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation.
English Groomers Challenge New Makeover makes for an excellent show
T
he Challenge 2019 had a little bit of a makeover this year we still are at our home at the White Oak Leisure Centre in Swanley, Kent but the ring had a bit of a change around and the classes were categorised by breed group rather than technique, this was to try to make it a bit easier for newer competitors to decide what class they should enter. This year also saw the introduction of a new level with an Intermediate stream being added. This was to give a more accessible pathway for the Newcomers who may have been intimidated by the big jump into Experienced. We also decided that we would try to fit in more tradestands and offer free entry to all spectators. This meant you could come and watch the competition and do all your shopping as well as drop off your sharpening completely free of charge. We also had our new Qualification Clinic where City & Guilds, OCN and ICMG would hold sessions talking about their routes to their qualifications, this was also included in the free entry. Our seminars now run along a theme and this year is was all about Heads and Tails. This is a topic that proved to be very popular with our seminar tickets with, for the first time in the Challenge’s history, them selling out quite a bit in advance. The demonstrators included myself, Julie Harris, Chrisse Warwick, Kerry Thomas, Melanie Winters-Holmes and Sally Hart representing the committe members that were demonstrating and Special Guest demonstrator Denise Westbrook from Groom Team

England. Glen Succamore was busy on the front desk and Nicky Mills was our esteemed Judges Steward and with Tanya as one of our judges that was the entire committee busy. The hall overflowed with companies this year, in fact they spilled into the smaller hall which proved to be quite popular. As always Groomers and Simpsons were in their usual spots and they were our main class sponsors along with Colin Taylor Range and Redcape, We also had the support from Scissor Boutique, For All Dogkind, Sharpology, Emmi Pet, Hownd and Groomers Spotlight. Groomers also sponsored Best In Show and the winner received £500 in Vouchers from Groomers and that winner was Klaudia Szonyi with her beautiful Handstripped Airedale. Our fantastic and distinguished panel of judges comprised of Philip Langdon, Colin Taylor, Lee Cox as well as Nikki Scott (last year’s Challenge winner) who we
were very fortunate to have judge the main classes We were equally honoured to have Tanya Stevens judge the Creative Stylist of the Year. This prestigious title was won by Nikki Smith with her amazing mermaid theme and our Juniors and Special Awards were judged by Sue Nas. All in all the Challenge went smoothly despite the best efforts of the Triathlon organisers who were also using the premises and were a complete irritation all day. Suffice to say we have made sure they won’t be around on next year’s date which just happens to be Sunday 14th June. Our team of helpers worked their socks off all day as always and the Challenge just wouldn’t be the friendly and welcoming show that it is known for with out these lovely guys helping us put the competitors at ease and making sure they were looked after, thank you to you all.

Adding Retail to my Grooming Business By Kristian Maris, author of The Dog Grooming Business Course: How to set up and run your own dog grooming business
H
ave you heard the one about Fred? He walks into his local supermarket for a pint of milk and comes home with a new TV, a pair of trousers, pet insurance and a lottery ticket. He forgets the pint of milk. Fred is already a regular at his supermarket and trusts their products and services. So it’s easy to get him to purchase other things he didn’t know he needed or didn’t know they offered.
In the world of retail, this is called cross-selling. As the owner of a dog grooming salon, you’ve got customers like Fred. They come to you because they trust the service you provide. If you have a retail offering alongside your grooming, it’s easy to cross-sell to Fred. Fred’s dog needs to eat. Maybe he needs a collar and a lead. A bed. Toys. Treats. Shampoo. As somebody in the trade, you can purchase retail stock at wholesale prices and then sell them to Fred at retail prices. You keep the difference in price, the margin, as profit. Kind of a no-brainer, right? You might have 100 customers, maybe 1000. If you now offer them retail products – which is a service they will appreciate because it saves them having to go elsewhere – then you can increase your turnover. That is, you can make more money.
But is it as simple as this? Cross-selling or providing additional services within your dog grooming business is not without a specific risk. 18 | Total Grooming Magazine
If you don’t do it right, you could undermine the ‘core competency’ of your business – your grooming. If you’re a solo groomer working from your own premises, the time and effort required for cross-selling may have a knock-on effect on your ability to groom efficiently. You might be lucky to have somebody help you - perhaps handling the retail sales and managing your bookings. But you might not have any profit left over after their wages have been paid. On top of that, in order to offer retail you have to purchase the stock to sell. This requires an upfront investment from you. Not everything sells, so you’ll end up with products that sit on the shelves for a long time before you finally decide to get rid of them at cost, or less. Moreover, on a regular basis, you’ll need to re-order what you’ve sold. This, again, is time-consuming. It adds to your workload and increases your responsibilities. Most of your re-ordering will be related to food. And your margins on food might not be that great – perhaps a couple of pounds for a 2kg bag. Unless you’re selling big volumes of food, it hardly seems worth the effort. There is, therefore, an ‘opportunity cost’ associated with adding retail to your grooming. The time and effort required to talk and cross-sell to
customers, re-order the stock on a regular basis, put it on display, price it, and keep your retail area clean and presentable. All of this will take time away from your grooming. Adding retail to your grooming, therefore, needs carefully to be thought out before you start contacting suppliers and offering this. If the time that retail requires means you groom one or two fewer dogs per day, or per week, calculate your lost earnings. Compare this number to your net profit from retail sales. The numbers have to make sense before you get too excited about all the lovely new retail products to offer your customers.

Discreet panel heating that doesn’t take up space nor allowing pet hair to become trapped. Perfect lighting was essential. Panel ceiling lights that illuminate the entire space so as not to cast shadows are a feature we feel is a must. Audio Branding for Salons
Daniel Lafferty, Director of Voice and Music at audio branding specialists PHMG outlines how grooming professionals can leverage the power of music in marketing The science of sound From high profile TV advertising and radio ads to mixes for industry events and telephone on hold systems, music has established itself as one of the most powerful assets in brand building and recognition. How a company sounds is now just as important as how it looks. Yet it remains one of the least understood facets of the marketing mix. As the second strongest human sense for emotional response (after smell), sound creates a well-documented emotional trigger on the human psyche. It can be particularly powerful in the animal care sector as precious pets are an already emotive subject, with customers primed to respond to music which resonates with them. In fact, research clearly shows that making better use of audio can help businesses to gain a competitive edge. A recent independent study by PHMG highlighted the subconscious power of sound, confirming that 60% of people now think music is more memorable than visuals when used in marketing.
Creating the purrfect brand soundtrack Despite the ongoing digitisation of modern life, the telephone remains a key appointment scheduling tool for pet handlers. The old adage – that you never get a second chance to make a first impression – continues to ring true. There are three key elements of any successful brand soundtrack: a relevant 22 | Total Grooming Magazine
and punchy script, professional voice artistry and an exclusive music track which sums up the brand in a few notes.
Hitting the right note It’s easy to choose a popular song thinking it will engage the listener. But this isn’t always the case. Not only does everyone have different musical tastes, but songs are triggers for memories – and not all are positive. Creating a bespoke track instead allows pet groomers to offer something which exactly mirrors their unique business personality. In our experience of creating soundtracks for a wide range of pet groomers over the years, businesses will mainly use live instruments to communicate the hands-on nature of their work, with piano and acoustic guitar proving particularly popular. Tracks are performed at a laid back tempo, designed to put owners at ease with fairly sparse arrangements and only a few instruments playing at any one time. Simplicity and transparency are very important facets. Voice of reason When it comes to choosing the most effective voiceover, regional accents are deemed more popular than neutral, countrywide ones – as familiarity is very important. Grooming businesses choose female voices over male as a rule, again citing comfort and reassurance as a key factor.
Word perfect It is important that grooming practices

regularly refresh their audio scripts, using calendar dates to constantly cross-sell and upsell to customers. This can be done to promote seasonal offers, such as a Christmas grooming package or Spring de-shedding services, or to highlight key differentiators like home grooming or dental health expertise. Audio branding that empathetically talks to pet lovers on a personal level can be used to provide that all important reassurance for customers that an establishment is the right choice for their beloved feline and canine friends.

Grooming Van of the Year
The Portable Palace Created from our Revolutionary insulated panel, the Palace provides groomers with unrivalled benefits never seen before in the industry! This amazing new concept was born due to our lining's incredible lifespan - they often out live the vans they were placed in - so we created a demountable pod where your business can be moved on to the next chassis easily when needed - or if you no longer wish to be mobile, you can demount the pod and work from your garden!
• • • • • • • •
As the chassis ages, the Palace can be removed and placed onto a brand new chassis - resulting in a much cheaper cost than having to buy a whole new van and conversion with next to no downtime If the chassis is involved in an accident or breaks down you can simply remove the body, place it on the ground and work from your driveway whilst you wait for it to be repaired. The lining will not out live the vehicle like so often seen with used van conversions. You then have to sell the van & conversion and then buy a new van and conversion and wait whilst it is converted. Whereas with the Palace, you can keep the pod forever and change the chassis as you need to. Once you choose to retire from mobile grooming you can remove the Palace, sell the chassis and work from the Palace in your garden instead of having to buy a parlour or convert a room in your house. When you choose to move home, you can take the pod with you and this portability combined with the size means they will not normally require planning permission in your garden. You never need to buy a Brand new chassis that can depreciate - simply buy used a chassis and then swap them out as they get too old. Smaller than its LWB Van equivalent but provides a more workable space inside that is highly customisable as there are no van strutts or vehicle constraints Can be driven on a normal car driving license Say goodbye to having to buy a whole new van and conversion every few years - simply move your Palace from one chassis to another with zero down time and when the time comes and you no longer want to be mobile, simply

Tried & Tested We asked a number of groomers the following questions on their shampoo selection: 1. What shampoo did you purchase? 2. What are your main considerations when choosing a shampoo? 3. What is it you like about this shampoo? 4. Would you recommend this shampoo and why? Lakhi Thindal Posh Pets Grooming Academy Birmingham 1. I have all but my favourite is sensitive as it suits all coat types and no issues with reactions to the skin with both dogs and humans 2. Something gentle but powerful enough to clean , good with all water types and coats as I don’t want to have endless varieties. Plus economical and tearless. 3. It lathers up amazingly as it’s the suds that bring the dirt and grease away from the body , the smell is subtle as clients these days don’t want anything unatural and it’s tearless 4. It’s an easy to use product and saves money in the long run plus I’ve noticed great coat and skin condition on repeat clients . It’s a very safe product regarding eyes, puppies etc , clients find it great for home use .
Chrissie Warwick - The Brighton Pet Spa 1. Banish conditioner. 2. It’s got to make the coat look and feel in better condition. It also needs to help me get knots out without making the coat look greasy. 3. Banish is great on the woolly coats to help get out knots and tangles. It also cuts static, making the coat easier to fluff and stand out when scissoring. Most of our clients are woollies now so it’s our most used conditioner in the salon. 4. Yes I would recommend it and have done lots of times. It makes my grooming easier and I love the product.
Pamela Campbell - Ayrshire Grooming Salon 1. I use the whole range of Hownd shampoos as every dogs coat condition is different. These are my absolute favourites. 2. After using so many different brands of shampoos over the years. I have finally found a shampoo I can use to tailor to the dogs skin and coat condition. I like using Hownd shampoos as it doesn’t break out our hands. Kind and gentle shampoo with great dilution rate which is cost effective. 3. I like the dilution ratio 25:1 which makes it more affordable to use good quality ingredients. Non drip pumps so we are not losing any shampoo. The results are fabulous and you can tailor the shampoo to suit individual breeds needs. Also I like supporting this brand not only are they based in the uk but they are cautious about it being cruelty free. 4. I highly recommend this shampoo. Fabulous results. Affordable products. Cruelty free. Wide range of shampoos. Also spa range to increase your profits.

Rachel Ince - Hollywood Dogs Professional Dog & Cat We are a busy salon that has been in business for 16 years, have always strived to bring the best products with the best performance to our customers. Above all else we need a shampoo that has a good deep cleanse, helps to dry the coat quickly, leaves the coat shiny and ready for the next stage, the haircut! We have found that Hydra delivers everything we have been looking for with a great long lasting fragrance. After hearing all the great reviews about it on Instagram we just had to try it and contacted Simon at Redcape We are currently using Odour Neutralising, Whitening and Moist Shampoo and Conditioner Ultra De-matting and conditioning spray is brilliant and I use it for fluff drying all dogs. We love the ear cleaner too and all of the fragrances which our customers love!! We love the performance and the amazing fragrance it leaves on the coat. It makes scissoring a breeze and the dogs are squeaky clean and dry quickly. I recommend Hydra , it’s a great line to use in a busy salon where you need to rely on a great product to deliver results every time.
Nichola MacGillivray - Nikki’s Canine Sassoon 1. Superfine baby powder shampoo 2. My main considerations when choosing a shampoo is how effective it is in removing all grease and dirt from the coat. I like the coat to be left squeaky clean. Along with price and value for money. 3. I like how this shampoo leaves the coat smelling clean, and removes all the grease and dirt. 4. I would recommend this shampoo as it is good value for money and leaves the coat squeaky clean and smelling fresh. This is essential when preparing the coat for the grooming and styling procedure. Without a good shampoo, you will not get a good finish/result. Superfine will ensure this.
Fee Brook - Pride 2 Groom 1. I used the Purify Shampoo and the Everyday conditioner, also the everyday conditioning spray. 2. I want a product that will make the most of the dogs coat, keeping it highly moisturised is essential and also keeping it in tip top condition. 3. The product cleaned the coat really well and left it feeling really clean, but also very nourished. I loved how the coat felt after being blow dried and was impressed that the coat held well for a number of days. The products smell amazing too, but with clean scents which last and not over powering or sickly smelling. 4. Yes I would highly recommend. It all dilutes well and goes a long way, works well in a hydrobath too. The shampoo deep cleans without being harsh and feels beautiful to use. The conditioner went through the coat well and evenly, it’s not heavy in any way and washes out again with ease. It gave the coat a superior feel compared to other products I have used while keeping the coat hydrated and feeling gorgeous with lasting finish which is something I struggle to find. The range is so gentle on my skin as well as the dogs too, you can tell it’s not harsh in any way. The spray gives the ultimate edge on finish too. I look forward to trying more products in the range.Fee brook pride 2 groom

Getting In a Lather About Shampoos?
Debby Knight of The Bristles Dog Grooming and Training Salon, a City and Guilds Assessment Centre for Summit, looks at the purpose of shampoos and which do the best job and why:
T
here are hundreds of different dog shampoos on the market and the price is not always reflected in the quality of the product, but much do you know about the shampoo you are using? Is the object just to remove all the dirt and grease in the coat in the cheapest possible way? Or is it to use a quality product that is kind to your dog’s coat? The name shampoo originates in India in around 1762, but it wasn’t until about 1914 that shampoo became commercialised in American Magazine. It was however Hans Schwarzkopf in Berlin that invented the liquid shampoo and whose brand is still sold in Europe today. Soap and shampoo were very similar products until the 1930s, when Drene introduced the first synthetic surfactants instead of soap. The object of shampoo is to remove unwanted build-up of dirt and grease

on the hair, without stripping out the natural oils, sebum. Shampoo usually contains sodium lauryl sulfate , or sodium Laureth sulfate , which is a surfactant along with a co-sufactant cocamidopropyl betaine in water. Some cheaper sodium lauryl sulfate is not cleaned of contaminates and could introduce dangerous by-products into the shampoo and there are no studies that test dog shampoo brands for contaminants. Be careful if the ingredients say, artificial fragrance, phalares, artificial colours, formaldehyde preservatives, isothiazolinone preservatives, paraben preservatives, cocamide-MEA,triethanolamine, mineral oil , polyethylene glycol. , PEG40 lanolin, propylene glycol (PEG). As my knowledge on these ingredients is
limited I suggest you research these to identify them more fully. So is there any legislation covering what goes into animal shampoos? The answer is yes, if it is for medicinal purposes, such as containing an insecticide or an ingredient which has a pharmacological effect or is presented as an insecticidal shampoo .However there is no regulation that hold manufacturers of dogs grooming products for ingredients’ purity. Certified organic grooming products go through a much higher level of scrutiny, as they are reviewed throughout the life cycle. Certified organic dog grooming products also verify that there are no GMO ingredients , pesticides, herbicides, artificial colours or fragrances. Now I have scared you into

Debby Knight’s top choices are Double K
believing you are poisoning every grooming client with the products you are using, at least be sensible and make sure you are thoroughly washing and rinsing the dogs. I have my favourite shampoos, so my top choices are Double K. I started using this when I brought some back from the USA long before it was sold in the UK. I loved it’s cleaning properties, I used this for years, but did get irritated skin at times. There are lots of different shampoos in the range including one for all different colour of dogs, first aid, deep cleaning, Griminator, plus a good range of conditioners too, especially Refurb. The dilution ratios make it very cost-effective to use. I was not aware of the importance of the ingredients in shampoos years ago and as long as it cleaned the dog I was happy. Now I am much better educated and think far more holistically, trying to make sure I don’t damage the coat and skin of the dog . Another shampoo I love is Earthbath , another American shampoo. This is a great shampoo which I think is much 36 | Total Grooming Magazine
kinder to the skin and coat of the dog, than many other. It has fabulous rinse ability and the dogs dry 25% faster, due to it not leaving residue and unwanted product on or in the hair. Again the range is very extensive with a shampoo for every occasion. My current favourite is Natures Groom, a Christies’ own shampoo and made in the UK. This is a lovely range of shampoos, some are citrus based for example Deep Clean with Grapefruit and Orange, others with coconut ( Lush and Plush with coconut). It also has a cream rinse and a conditioner called Intensive Conditioner with Cocoa and Coconut, my very favourite of all conditioners. This shampoo rinses clean, is very economical and has never caused an irritation to any of my dogs. In other words it does what it says on the box. Very reasonably priced and economical . I have been very lucky over the years to be able to blind test many shampoos and conditioners from many manufacturers. As I never know who they are made by I can be honest in my reviews. I have given them to my
students to try and therefore giving a more unbiased, balanced report. Remember that water can give different results with your shampoo , soft water often giving better results. Shampoo can be quite an addiction for groomers, but I didn’t think I was one of them until I moved house and emptied out my salon. I had over 20 different brands and have been very strict working my way through them all before buying any more. Next time you use your shampoo, read the ingredients, request an information sheet from your supplier. It doesn’t mean you stop using your current shampoo but be aware of its ingredients.

Building a Business in Dog Grooming
Heidi Anderton, principal of Absolutely Animals and London School of Pet Grooming, talks about building your business in dog grooming. Heidi has over 30 years experience in the business and is a highly qualified international award-winning groomer and judge as well as a previous member of Groom Team England.
I
started my business in 1995. As a single parent with three very young children. I can assure you it has not been an easy journey! But…… over 20 years later, I have a successful grooming school and salon. I have had many trials and tribulations along the way but have kept motivated and worked towards achieving my goals. I use the word “successful” loosely, as to me my business is successful! It pays my bills and helps build my future in a job; I love to do! Others may dream of achieving much more! Building your business is an individual dream and it is different for each one of us. We all have different hopes, dreams and aspirations – where will yours take you? When I started my business there was no internet! Yes, that’s right no internet! Can you imagine it? Those brought up with the internet in present times, probably cannot imagine how they would even start. It is so much easier now – that’s a fact! No excuses! I had to go to libraries, read books, attend courses and find the professional people to find the information I needed, whereas now the information is at the tip of your fingertips. The internet will help you to build your business much faster and more effectively than ever before.
Where to start I always recommend starting with 38 | Total Grooming Magazine
Set goals
a 5-10-year plan. Where do you see yourself in 10 years time? Think about this very carefully as, this is your life! Your business will be your life! Once you have built this picture you can really start building your business! Building your life to success! The best business is one which you enjoy. It’s the easiest and most rewarding one to build, but sometimes you will need to take a risk and remove yourself from your comfort zone. Making progress requires you to be open to fresh technology, ideas, and, occasionally, out of our comfort zones. If you have an idea that needs the experience of others, you can always reach out to those who are able to help in the dog grooming industry. At the
British Isles Grooming Association we have a mentor programme, you can attend seminars, follow qualification routes, attend grooming competitions and join various face book groups, there is always someone to advise and give you fresh ideas and inspirations.
Ditch the negativity If you possess good ideas, but a phobia of moving ahead has you paralyzed, take it step by step. Many times, we’ll blame lack of knowledge, funds, and support when in fact we’re blocking our own road to success. Do not listen to negativity; have faith. You may be shocked at what you’re able achieve. I have seen many who have.

Planning is key Write on a piece of paper - where you see yourself in 10 years time, then start working back from there. Make a general plan and start working towards it. Be realistic in your plans and do your research on them. Business plans are essential for saving time, money and effort. You can get lots of help on this on the internet on sites such as www.entrepreneur.com. These sites will help you with the tools to build your business in a practical sense. Whether you need help on your present business or to a new add-on you are planning, you will need to work out many strategies. You may not stick to your plan like glue, obstacles and opportunities always come along in life to bend you from the path you may be following, this is going to happen, but you need to be prepared for it.
Positivity and self confidence Have a clear vision of where you want to be and establish measurable objectives, so it is possible to view your progress. For example, in two years I want to have achieved a certain qualification or position. This will make 40 | Total Grooming Magazine
you more confident. Be optimistic - negativity can reduce your motivation and drag you down. As we surround ourselves with good energy, we are automatically more productive. Have a power group of positive influences around you who’ll support your goals.
Tools for Building a business Keep learning - Learning about your business will do wonders for your confidence. Always be aware of seminars and courses that can keep you up-to-date on your industry or make you more in-the-know, regarding business overall. This will help you to build the solid blocks of your business.
Staff If you want to build your business, you will need to take on staff to help you do this. Think about the roles you want the staff to take on and the amount of time you will need them for. It could be more beneficial for you to have two- or three-part timers, than one full timer. Calculate staff wages over a yearly period and not a daily basis as daily work can fluctuate dramatically. This will help you plan wages and roles more
easily. Recognise small things that you have accomplished. Celebrate your accomplishments, whether it be a new qualification or module, the business plan slowly completes to put your dreams into action. It could be, that you diffuse a small problem that might have exploded out of control, give yourself a pat on your back. Those little victories will serve as a reminder of how talented you are and that you have more business successes to go. Others may assist you on your path to self-confidence, but ultimately it is up to you. Make that plan and your dreams and ambitions come true. Heidi Anderton LCGI ICMG www.absolutelyanimals.biz

Itchy dog - Try Natural Shampoos and Rinses Groomer, Jitka Krizova, shares her natural approach to bathing and grooming dogs with allergic reactions:
O
ver the last few decades, we’ve seen more and more dogs with allergic dermatitis, food intolerances and immunemediated diseases. We can try to limit the causes to a certain point and we can give the dog prescribed medication, however, this usually only provides short-term relief or improvement. Inevitably it will rear its ugly head again sooner or later. There is, however, one thing dog owners can do at home to help their itchy dog… bath, bath and bath again. I bet in the past you’ve heard that you shouldn’t bath your dog often, perhaps even at all? This was quite common a few years ago, especially with terrier people who believed terriers were not supposed to be bathed at all. Shampoos, in the past, were largely based on tar and sulphur but they have come a far way since then.

Bathing itchy dogs at home or even in a salon is very effective, cheap and the sensible thing to do in order to remove the allergens from the coat and skin. Bathing provides immediate relief and the guideline is to bath your itchy dog at least once a week. The key is to choose your shampoo wisely. Go for a natural shampoo, containing coconut oil, argan oil, charcoal, jojoba oil, neem oil, calendula oil and essential oils like lavender, peppermint and chamomile. Read the label carefully because some shampoos contain natural and/or organic ingredients but can still contain some toxic chemicals.
Avoid shampoos with: • Added dyes or colourants • Artificial fragrances, as they are linked to allergies, headaches etc. • Parabens • Mineral oils • Sodium laureth sulfate • Stearalkonium chloride
Make Your Own Shampoo
I
f you’d like to do some DIY you can even make your own shampoo from soap nuts! Soap nuts (sometimes called “soap berries”) are probably the most sustainable cleaning product we can get What are they? They’re an allnatural, plant-based product (they grow on a tree) they are easy to grow organically and require very little processing or packaging. Soap nuts are naturally hypoallergenic, odourless, highly effective and gentle at the same time. There are countless ideas on how to use them, making them sustainable and versatile. Soap nut fruits actually contain a natural soap called saponin, which is released when they come into contact with water.
Here’s how you can make 44 | Total Grooming Magazine
your own shampoo which doubles up as a cleaning product as well!
Add a hand full of soap nuts to 3 cups of water and simmer for 30 minutes then let it cool down and strain it. You can then use this liquid to clean your kitchen floors, etc and you can even freeze it! An idea is to make ice cubes and then add them to your bucket of water to wash the floor. If you put the liquid in the blender you get a nice silky, foamy liquid that can be used as a 100% natural shampoo for you and your dog. Just be careful to avoid the eyes as it really stings. As this product is all natural with no preservatives it won’t last long, in fact, only a couple of days in the fridge. I’d recommend making a fresh batch every time you need to bath a dog.
Another way to soothe itchy skin and balance the skin’s pH level, is to make an apple cider vinegar & green tea rinse: ½ cup green tea; cooled down ½ cup apple cider vinegar 1 cup distilled or boiled water cooled down Mix it all up well. Wash the dog as usual and rinse well with plenty of clean water. Apply the pre-made rinse on the dog’s coat and skin, massaging it in well. You can rinse it off or leave it on the coat and it can then work as a bug, fly and flea repellent as well! You can keep the mixture in the fridge, in a closed jar, for about a week or two but if it gets mouldy, don’t use it!

Salon add-ons
Groomer, Jenny Farrell shares her top tips for incorporating add-ons to the salon offer to help build business effectively:
S
omething I do in my salon is give basic grooms with add-ons such as dremel nails, treatments and shampoo options. The key to a successful business is to work smarter not harder, so what can you add to your current salon and grooms to generate a higher income? There are so many ways you can add additional treatments, sessions and add ons in your salon from employing outside companies to do treatments, to adding to your own skills. My space is limited here so I am focusing on things that you as a groomer can do in your salon or to get more money out of the current groom. Think about the grooming process.. Client walks in, Hello client and how are you? Today we have some new treatments to add to your groom, we have a colour enhancing shampoo, de-shed treatment, paw soother, nose balm and we can dremel cookies nails to make them smooth. Is this something you would be
48 | Total Grooming Magazine
interested in? You are already grooming so why not use products that you can charge extra for? Coat enhancers, many suppliers and manufacturers now have colour shampoos, protein conditioners, medicated shampoos and de-shed shampoos which can be used as treatments (additional services) to your groom. Why not buy some shampoos and offer these at a cost to your clients? £3-£5 extra for a favourite of mine is Alfa White by Double K, Furstaid by Double K and Blueberry facial by Tropiclean. They work very well, are easy on the dogs skin and do the job they say they will do. They are the same cost as normal shampoos (blueberry facial is more but it is worth it!). If you have a salon like my current salon in the countryside many of my clients are working dogs, so we use medicated, flea and tick and de-shed a lot. Even on dogs coming in for a bath you can add additional treatments such as these to bulk up the cost of the groom. I do not charge much for my shampoos and treatments but every pound helps! And my grooms look way better with a specialised shampoo. Dremeling or filing nails is a huge attraction in my salon, many people pay extra for dremeling of nails, it is fast easy and better for the dogs nail to dremel. They can be expensive to buy at first but you will see the return fast. Dremeling is an art so practice if you havnt been trained in the art
of dremeling nails. Some dogs prefer the dremel while others won’t like it. It’s a fast and effective way to reduce the quick, shorten the nail as much as possible while leaving the nail smooth and well finished. I charge £5 extra for dremeling in some areas of the UK you could charge much more, however in my location people don’t go for fancy grooms. You could go all out and offer nail varnish, stencilling, blow pen art and even creative grooming. This is something I offer in my salon and gets pricey for the client. However, as I am trained in creative grooming (if you practice, trust me it’s not that hard!) you can be as creative as you like and your clients love it! I offer this with a consultation and charge the client for products, time and some for the novelty of been able to do it. My creative grooming (stencils) start at £15 for a few hearts on the dogs bum or some

nail paint. Nail painting is time consuming, messing but looks brilliant and is a very effective way to get customers talking about your salon! Pick up and drop off services are always a huge way to get a new client base in, elderly, busy people just want people to do work for them. Offering a pick up and drop off service can bring people to your salon who would otherwise struggle. Not all taxi’s except pets, not all owners can drive or pick their dogs up. Offer this to bulk your client list up and you will find people are very willing to pay a little towards this. Some salons have the space to offer day care or even boarding which is a very profitable add on, if you have room to do day care I would strongly encourage this. People like to go shopping take their dogs to the salon and leave them a few hours. Why do it for free? Charge £5-£10 per hour or a ½ day fee. If you have the space to board this would be an excellent income. Your clients trust you to bath, dry and cut their dogs, who better to look after them when they go on holiday. I admit this is a whole new business but they go hand in hand and if I had the space in my salon I would 50 | Total Grooming Magazine
100% offer boarding and day care. Lots of groomers offer free or paid for bandanas, bows or slides as part of their groom, this is ok if you’re starting up or like the look. However, I personally see this as throwing money away. Bandanas are expensive, material is expensive, you have to spend time cutting them out or making bows. This is not a smart way to work. If you are a good groomer you don’t need to give away anything. Sell yourself
and add additional items to the groom cost. Where my salon is in the UK, people laugh and throw them away so I stopped doing free bandanas in 2017. Think: is this making my grooms better? Will this get people talking? Will this help my business to grow? If the answer is yes, do it, if the answer is no, don’t bother. A lot of groomers including myself, sell ourselves short, increase your value and be happy grooming.

Supt Simon Osborne, RSPCA staff officer, with Bridie
The RSPCA In this issue we find out more about the work of one of the country’s best known and longest running charities – The RSPCA.
T
he Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) was founded by a group of revolutionary animal lovers including Reverend Arthur Broome at a London coffee shop in 1824, making it the world’s oldest animal welfare charity. William Wilberforce, instrumental in the abolition of slavery, was also in attendance at that first meeting. A blue plaque can still be seen on the building in London today. The charity emerged to tackle the mistreatment of animals in Victorian England and, in 1835, worked to abolish bear baiting and bull baiting. The charity even had uniformed inspectors on the streets of London before the Metropolitan Police! In 1840, the charity was granted Royal status by
52 | Total Grooming Magazine
Queen Victoria and became the RSPCA. Since then, the RSPCA has transformed the lives of millions of animals, worked to bring in revolutionary new laws and protections for animals in England & Wales, and helped hundreds of thousands of families find the right rescue pet for them. The ultimate aim of the charity is to create a world that’s kinder to animals by preventing cruelty, promoting kindness, alleviating suffering, rescuing and rehoming unwanted pets, and caring and nurturing for sick or injured animals. The charity’s ultimate ambition is to create a world in which all humans respect and live in harmony with the animal kingdom. RSPCA chief executive Chris
Sherwood said: “The RSPCA is the oldest animal welfare charity in the world and has pioneered the vital frontline animal welfare work that now takes place in countries across the globe. “We work tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome tens of thousands of animals every year, stand up for the vulnerable and give a voice to the voiceless, and pledge to continue fighting for better protection for the animal kingdom both here and overseas. “But we couldn’t do this incredible work without the amazing support of the general public - whether it’s those people who make a donation to fund our animal hospitals, members of the public who report cruelty to our inspectors, kindhearted volunteers who give up
their time to help care for the animals in our rehoming centres, or families who choose to rehome one of our rescue pets. “We are here for animals, for life. And we’re lucky to have the support of people like you!” The RSPCA - which operates in England & Wales, and also has an international team who undertake outreach work across the globe has inspired the creation of similar organisations in Ireland, America, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia. RSPCA employees work closely with other agencies and charities both at home and abroad in a bid to improve animal welfare for animals in the UK and further afield. The RSPCA has been working with Chinese officials for more than a decade helping them draft their first animal welfare legislation. Closer to home, the RSPCA has been integral in lobbying the Government to introduce new laws to better protect animals in England & Wales. The charity helped introduce the Protection of Animals Act in 1911, the Hunting Act in 2005, and the Animal Welfare Act in 2006. The campaigns and public affairs teams, who lobby politicians and advise Government bodies, work closely with the organisation’s science teams who draft guidelines and welfare standards based on scientific evidence and research. Our science teams have helped improve farm animal welfare standards, draft guidelines for pet owners, worked to reduce the suffering caused to animals used in medical research, and fought to protect wildlife. The charity has 465 officers and inspectors working on the frontline to investigate complaints of animal cruelty, rescue abused, neglected and abandoned animals, and ensure sick or injured animals receive urgent veterinary treatment. Each officer covers an average area of 172 square miles and drives around 80 miles a day! Last year, the RSPCA’s 24-hour emergency hotline - which is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year received more than 1m calls from members of the public; that’s one call every 30 seconds. And in 2017, the RSPCA’s animal collection

officers, animal welfare officers and inspectors rescued 114,584 animals and investigated 141,760 cruelty complaints. The charity operates four animal hospitals (two in London, one in Birmingham and one in Manchester), four wildlife centres (in Cheshire, East Sussex, Norfolk and Somerset) and 17 animal centres across the country. The national RSPCA also works closely with another 165 branches - independently run and separately registered charities - who operate a further 41 animal centres, veterinary clinics and specialist reptile centres across England & Wales. The RSPCA is the only organisation which helps all species, from cats and dogs, to horses and farm animals, to wildlife and exotics. The charity’s aim is to rescue, rehabilitate and either rehome or release as many animals as possible. In 2017, the charity’s rehoming centres and branches gave 44,611 animals a second chance of a new home including 8,893 dogs, 26,369 cats, 3,165 rabbits and 257 equines. And the four wildlife centres took in 18,659 animals in need of help from tiny rodents to stunning birds of prey, from adorable seal pups to fluffy fox cubs. The charity also has its own separately-run ethical food label RSPCA Assured, which seeks to drive up welfare standards in the British farming industry. As well as rescuing animals, the charity also offers support to lowincome pet owners and provides advice to families with pets. The

charity’s animal hospitals and clinics offer discounted veterinary treatment and carry out free neutering and microchipping. The RSPCA not only relies on its dedicated, passionate staff and the kindhearted, generous donors who support the charity financially, but also its network of committed volunteers who give up their time to walk dogs, collect injured wildlife, transport animals from
hospitals to rehoming centres, and help in any way they can. The RSPCA’s aim is to prevent cruelty and work with owners to improve welfare for animals - and last year our officers issued 76,460 welfare and advice notices. But sometimes the charity will take out a private prosecution against an animal abuser and, in 2017, the charity prosecuted 696 people for cruelty to animals. The
RSPCA is the principal prosecutor of animal welfare offences in England & Wales. RSPCA officers have no statutory powers and cannot enter a property or seize an animal without the permission of the owner, or without police assistance. The charity also has no special powers or legal rights and takes prosecutions to the courts as a private prosecutor - just as any individual or organisation can do. To avoid animals suffering and prosecutions against owners, the charity
believes educating young people is key to creating a kinder generation. Last year, the RSPCA trained 2,300 student teachers in promoting compassion for animals - in the hope of reaching more than 80,000 students a year. The charity also ran 37 courses for youth workers and community support professionals in 2017, and more than 155,000 teachers and youth justice workers used our interactive online resources. If you’d like to offer a rescued animal a new home, please visit the RSPCA’s Find A Pet search function online to
find your paw-fect match: www.rspca. org.uk/findapet. It costs more than £129m a year to run the RSPCA. The charity relies on public donations to continue its vital work. If you’d like to help the RSPCA continue its vital work rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming the most neglected and abused animals, please donate by visiting www.rspca.org.uk/ give and help us create a world that’s kinder to animals.
Ziggy RSPCA staff couldn’t believe it when a Staffordshire bull terrier arrived into their care with a 20in carbon fibre bolt embedded in his skull. Twoyear-old Ziggy was found dumped in remote woods near Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, in October 2014, by walkers who contacted the charity. He was rushed to a veterinary clinic where he underwent a life-saving operation to delicately remove the arrow. Miraculously the bolt had deflected off his skull avoiding his brain, ears and eyes. Staff believe he had been left with the crossbow bolt in his head for several days - but said the friendly pooch was still wagging his tail despite the pain. RSPCA Inspector Justin Stubbs, who led the investigation into the attack on Ziggy, said: “It was a
Ziggy after being rehomed and before, with the crossbow bolt embedded in his skul
pretty nail-biting operation - they had to just slowly, slowly pull the bolt out. And, incredibly, all the vital organs had been missed. We were all flabbergasted at how narrowly he escaped with his life. The public really took Ziggy and his story into their hearts. We had such a lovely reaction from people who inundated us with calls and messages. It shows that despite the fact that someone attacked, and then abandoned, Ziggy in this callous way, there are still so many more people out there who care about animals and are horrified that someone could treat
him in this way. It has restored a lot of my faith. After months of specialist care and rehabilitation, RSPCA staff found Ziggy the paw-fect home with Hertfordshire couple Dominic O’Hare and Anna Burton-Wood. Dominic said: “It’s hard to say what it was exactly in his story which made me know he was the dog for us, but I think what got me the most was the way he just went up to those people in the woods with a wagging tail. Despite what had been done to him he was so open, so trusting.” In 2015, Ziggy was named as the PDSA Pet Survivor of the Year.

Home dog boarders fear new rules will force them out of business
A
PET insurance expert says dog day care and home boarding businesses across England are worried for their livelihoods because of new legislation – leaving both small business and pet owners in the lurch. Andrew Ball, of animal-related business insurance specialist Cliverton, welcomed new government guidelines to streamline and modernise existing licensing controls for businesses that work with animals but said some changes means smaller operations could struggle to survive. Many business owners are still confused about how the regulations
will impact them and worry about not getting their licence renewed. Andrew said: “Whilst an update to the Animal Welfare regulations are something that the industry certainly needs, from a safeguarding point of view, the changes may negatively impact some providers and users of dog day care and home boarding services. A petition was launched by frustrated business owners, and since then, DEFRA have made some changes to the guidance notes, including allowing pets in day care to be walked off the lead ‘with the owner’s consent’. Andrew added: “It is positive that DEFRA are listening to the concerns

of these business owners and hopefully local authority interpretation of the law will be more uniform going forward. “However, uncertainty remains for many business owners, who anxiously await the inspector’s visit who will determine if they meet the new standard. Only time will tell.” The Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018 came into effect on October 1. Keep Dogs Cool With some of the continuous hottest weather this summer, groomers need to make sure that dogs are kept cool in the salon.
R
emember that a dog can easily get heatstroke in the hot weather and having windows open in the salon may not be
enough. A fan will only blow the warm air around so you may want to look at investing in an air conditioning unit or renting one for the summer. There’s also the option of chiller mats which will help keep dogs cool in the salon. Make sure you warn your clients about the dangers of keeping dogs, for even the shortest period, in a hot car. The RSPCA has issued the following warning: Dogs die in hot cars Never leave your dog alone in a car on a warm day. If you see a dog in distress in a hot car, dial 999. Many people still believe that it’s ok to leave a dog in a car on a warm day if the windows are left open or they’re parked in the shade, but the truth is, it’s still a very dangerous situation for the dog. A car can become as hot as an oven very quickly, even when it doesn’t feel that warm. When it’s 22 degrees, in a car it can reach an unbearable 47 degrees within the hour. What to do if you see a dog in a car on a warm day In an emergency, we may not be able to attend quickly enough, and with no powers of entry, we’d need police assistance at such an incident. Don’t be afraid to dial 999, the police will inform the RSPCA if animal welfare assistance is required.
Help a dog in a hot car • Establish the animal’s health and condition. If they’re displaying any signs of heatstroke dial 999 58 | Total Grooming Magazine
immediately. • If the situation becomes critical for the dog and the police are too far away or unable to attend, many people’s instinct will be to break into the car to free the dog. If you decide to do this, please be aware that without proper justification, this could be classed as criminal damage and, potentially, you
may need to defend your actions in court. • Make sure you tell the police what you intend to do and why. Take pictures or videos of the dog and the names and numbers of witnesses to the incident. The law states that you have a lawful excuse to commit damage if you believe that the owner of the

property that you damage would consent to the damage if they knew the circumstances (section 5(2)(a) Criminal Damage Act 1971). Once removed, if the dog is displaying signs of heatstroke get emergency veterinary help. This could mean the difference between life and death for the dog.
dialing 999 should always be the first step. By now, most of us understand the dangers of leaving dogs unattended in cars because of how quickly they heat up, but there are other less obvious risk factors that need to be considered in hot weather.
If the dog isn’t displaying symptoms of heatstroke
Here are some suggestions for a safe summer with your dog:
• Establish how long the dog has been in the car. A ‘pay and display’ ticket could help. • Make a note of the car’s registration. If the owner returns, but you still feel the situation was dangerous for the dog, you may still report the incident to the police. • If you’re at a shop, venue or event ask the staff to make an announcement to alert the owner of the situation. • If possible, get someone to stay with the dog to monitor their condition. If they begin to display signs of distress or heatstroke, be prepared to dial 999. • You can also call the 24-hour cruelty line for advice on 0300 1234 999. However, if the dog’s in danger,
Dogs love to be outside, but sometimes their access to the great outdoors should be restricted, such as when it is particularly hot and sunny. Finding a shady spot in the garden or park isn’t always enough to keep their temperature down, so try to keep your dog inside during the hottest parts of the day. Likewise, limit time spent exercising, particularly as pavements can become scorchingly hot very quickly and burn your dog’s delicate paw pads. Try resting the back of your hand on the pavement and see if you can hold it there for five seconds – if not, the path is too hot for your dog to walk on. Protect pink areas with a sun cream

specially developed for dogs. Noses and ears are areas susceptible to sunburn, so keep them protected as best you can. Ensure water is always available to your dog, as dehydration can quickly lead to heatstroke and other lifethreatening conditions. If you have a paddling pool you can leave out for your dog to splash about in, even better! Make sure this is always supervised though and if you’re not going to be around for some of the day, consider setting up a sprinkler instead. Keep on top of grooming, as excess hair will only act to insulate your dog further. If your dog is long-haired, having them clipped will help hugely. Make some cooling freeze pops you can have ready for when your dog is really struggling in the heat. You can buy these ready made or make your own - there are plenty of delicious recipes online. Finally, refrain from leaving your dog in any confined spaces, including greenhouses, caravans and cars. These all become like ovens in the heat and very uncomfortable and dangerous places for a dog to be.

M
utneys Professional Pet Care have been manufacturing and supplying professional grooming equipment in the UK, for almost 25 years. The family-run business originated from a grooming salon and training school, based in the West Midlands and now offers high quality grooming products to Groomers, Vets, Colleges and Pet shops all over the country. The company was established in 1995 and has grown significantly since then; from their original shampoo range and unique show van service to a much wider range of both grooming products and handbuilt specialist equipment. Their shampoo range has been developed alongside professionals within working salons, to ensure they’re some of the best professional quality products available, for both busy dog groomers and pet owners who want to pamper their pooch. The shampoos and conditioners dilute well (a minimum of 10:1), to make them economical and are pH balanced to protect the natural oils found in a dogs’ skin and coat. ‘’The range originally started with our Dewberry Shampoo for harsh coats, which was designed to be a good cleaner that could also offer beneficial properties to be used on the MD’s own Wire-haired Dachshunds. Since then our range has expanded to over 23 varieties, which offers something for every breed and coat.” - Holly Jones, Marketing Manager for Mutneys. Many of the shampoos in the range also contain natural essential oils, which have been specially selected for their 62 | Total Grooming Magazine
natural healing properties. For example, the ‘Soothe & Calm’ Shampoo for irritated and sensitive skin contains: • Tea Tree oil – a natural antiseptic and fungicide, with soothing properties. • Lavender oil – a natural anti-septic and anti-inflammatory, with calming properties, it also acts as an insect repellent. • Geranium oil – a natural anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory, with soothing and stress relieving properties. This particular shampoo is fantastic for soothing skin disorders, cuts and grazes. It’s particularly effective on Westies and it’s anti-fungal properties, can even help reduce conditions like Dandruff. All made in the UK, at their Shropshire premises; the shampoos and conditioners are Vegan friendly, wheat free and contain no harmful ‘P’ chemicals (parabens, PEGs, phosphates, phthalates, petrochemicals or polysorbates). They’ve been specially
produced, so that they are biodegradable, environmentally friendly and can safely be used with all regulated water courses. Mutneys are proud members of the British Isles Grooming Association and the Pet Suppliers & Manufacturers Association. They’re also supporters of the ‘Buy British Campaign’, with the majority of their products being made in the UK and wherever possible, all ingredients, parts and packaging are produced and sourced here too. Mutneys are now exporting worldwide and have attended various trade shows to promote their products to even more locations. Want to know more, or try it for yourself ? See their website - www.mutneys.com or call Mutneys on 01948 841470 Mutneys shampoo range is also available for wholesale and retail packs of their products can be purchased to sell on in your pet shop or grooming salon.
