News and Product Round-up Groomer Site Milestone MyPetGroomer.co.uk nears milestone of 5000 business listings The online directory of professional pet groomers in the UK and Ireland is on track to reach a milestone of five thousand business listings within weeks. Comprised of ‘Free Forever’ business listings for professional pet groomers, the niche directory was created in 2016. Increasingly, it is being relied upon by pet owners to find the groomer that is right for them, and right for their pet cat or dog. “Pet grooming businesses can add or claim their listing, entirely for Free, Forever” explains founder Kristian Maris. “Then fill it with images and video, integrate their Facebook feed, show off their experience, credentials, awards or qualifications, plus invite customer reviews.” “Reviews is a biggie,” he adds. “What groomer has not been frustrated by an unfair online review that is impossible to respond to in a meaningful way,” he asks. The difference with MyPetGroomer is that reviews are moderated by real human beings, instead of bots. So, an ill-tempered or ignorant review (for example, an angry owner spouting off because their badly matted dog had to be shaved, or a competitor trying to poison your business) can actually be deleted from the site when a groomer appeals. “The site is run by groomers, for groomers, and this kind of misinformation and hostility won’t be tolerated because it undermines the fundamental purpose of the site, which is to promote pet welfare.” MyPetGroomer.co.uk is more than just a directory, adds Kristian. It is a platform of expertise and knowledgesharing that raises awareness among 4 | www.christiesdirect.com

pet owners about the benefits of regular grooming. Articles include topics like etiquette for pet owners booking and showing up for their pet’s first groom, what happens during grooming, what happens afterwards, re-booking, as well as skin and coat complaints, or new technology like the ultrasound toothbrush for dental health. “As we all know to be true, pet grooming is more than just a haircut. A regular groom is beneficial to a cat or dog’s health and wellbeing. But the public doesn’t fully appreciate this. So MyPetGroomer.co.uk is helping to educate the public.” For the pet owner out there, instead of being flooded by thousands of Google results and not knowing

which link to follow, MyPetGroomer is therefore a centralised and easilycomprehensible niche website, an open and accessible hub of practical information. Via the site, pet owners can then visit the profiles of businesses near them and get a feel for the groomer’s talent, skills, friendliness and professionalism before making an appointment. To add or claim your free business listing, simply visit www. mypetgroomer.co.uk and find your business name to claim it, if already listed. If not already listed, simply click on ‘Add Your Business’ and follow the steps from there. All business listings are Free, Forever.

Mud-Daddy

There’s a portable solution to cleaning dogs while you are out and about – MudDaddy There’s no denying that most dogs love to play in the dirt and mud – it’s natural and the muddier the better for some! However, as lovely as it is to watch our four legged friends have the time of their life jumping in and out of muddy puddles, it also means the dreaded cleaning of paws and fur after the walk. 6 | www.christiesdirect.com

It’s a chore we all dread but something that must be done, especially now the weather becomes wetter. But fear not – there’s a new and innovative way to clean your dog’s dirty paws and rinse the mud out of their fur before they track it all over your house or car! Introducing the Mud-Daddy an incredible portable cleaning accessory that makes washing your dog (or any animal) quick and easy. Whether you’re cleaning them off before loading them

into your car or you’re washing them down at home, the Mud- Daddy is portable and efficient. It could be ideal to sell to clients in the salon or for you or your family and friends. Here’s a video of it in action: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=LzC37AbE1mU https://amzn.to/3mbqSeZ

Going Global Christies Global Virtual Event gives customers an immersive ‘face-to-face’ experience during Covid pandemic Christies Global, based in Northern Ireland, is one of the world’s leading pet grooming distributors with customers in over 40 countries. Key company brands such as Groom Professional and DezynaDog are staples in professional pet grooming salons worldwide and the company has added two pet-owner focused brands to their portfolio this year. Alongside expansion into new territories the company saw 47% growth (YTD) in profit since 2017. In a normal year, Christies Global attends the top pet industry trade shows across Europe, America, and UAE. These shows give the account managers a chance to meet with current customers to strengthen relationships but also a chance to introduce brands to new customers and extend the company’s reach into new markets. This year, however, with the blanket postponement of trade events until at least 2021 and restrictions on travel changing so frequently, the company’s plans have changed significantly. “Through discussions with our partners we were acutely aware of the struggle pet industry buyers were facing during this pandemic, not only to order current product lines, but more so to find new and exciting grooming brands and products to share with their customers” said Amy Donaghey, Event Manager at Christies Global. “With the increased use of video call platforms we knew this would be a great way to reach out to our customers but we wanted to augment the experience and create the feeling of being at a trade show and really connecting - something we’ve all been missing during lockdowns and with social distancing” said Amy. “We invited our customers and top pet industry buyers to book private 8 | www.christiesdirect.com

appointments with the team and had an overwhelming response, so we had to open up a further week of appointments.” After booking, potential new customers received product sample boxes in the post to review which allowed them to feel and smell the products during the calls. “This virtual event gave us the opportunity to have positive discussions with partners about plans for 2021 and beyond. We met with 23 industry buyers, 40% of which were potential new customers, from 19 different countries including France, Singapore, New Zealand, and America. We would never had been able to reach customers from so many different countries at one individual trade show” said Deborah McIntyre, Key Accounts Manager. Amy said “Christies Global have

successful pivoted from physical to virtual contact with customers and going forward we feel a hybrid of these will not only be a practical way to communicate with customers and reach new buyers, but will also be extremely efficient.”

Looking Back on A Year Like No Other

Heidi Anderton, principal of Absolutely Animals and London School of Pet Grooming and former member of Groom Team England looks at the highs and lows of the last 12 months:

Heidi Anderton

Well, 2020 has been Annus Horribilis as the Queen would say. But amongst all the Covid pandemic doom and gloom, there have been a lot of fantastic things going on in the grooming industry and for me personally. I want to highlight some of those things that I know about with some links so you can have a look at the information and hopefully 2021 is going to be a fantastic year for us all. We did manage to attend Crufts in March 2020. It was still a very busy show and the start of the pandemic. As you may know I am one of the directors for the British Dog Grooming Association. A non – profit organisation. We are all volunteers and work within the dog grooming 10 | Total Grooming Magazine

industry. When the first wave of the virus hit and businesses were forced to close the grooming industry was completely overlooked by the government. I think there is no doubt that the main consensus was that we should close as we did not know what this virus was capable of and we were concerned for our staff as well as our customers and of course the wider community. As groomers were not on the list of businesses that could remain open or in one of the businesses that should be closed, we found ourselves in a very grey area, although some groomers felt they could still trade safely and did continue work. We at BIGA worked very hard for the groomers during the first lockdown to ensure that those that wanted to work could work safely. I don’t think the government has any idea the amount

of people trading as dog groomers out there and as we all deliver the service in different ways, a uniform rule was impossible. We do however, need to making pet grooming a registered profession so we can have a much louder voice and be able to feedback to government what groomers want and how they can input into legislations affecting their business. https://www. mybiga.org/join-us During the pandemic, the grooming industry was not idle, as well as dealing with Covid, Whippet Media was launched, and they along with the groomers raised over ÂŁ67,000 for the NHS with online webinars. That is an amazing achievement and a huge amount of money to be raised in such a short amount of time. All kudos to them. They have gone on to take Whippet Media further into other

grooming webinars information and podcasts. The grooming industry really is romping into the 21st century. https://thewhippetmedia.com/ The next massive injection to the grooming industry is going to be Pooch Perfect. A BBC1 television programme on dog grooming. Apparently, filming is all complete and the programme is going to be aired in January 2021. You may see adverts on television over the Christmas period. This is a TV programme I can’t wait to see. It is going to not only highlight some of the great groomers in our industry but also hopefully educating the public about what really does go on in the grooming room. Let’s hope it will inspire a lot of dog owners to take their dogs’ coat care more seriously and provide knowledge of the health implications and longevity of life that that grooming has on their pet. One of the master’s behind pooch perfect is our own Colin Taylor, world renowned groomer and not only one of the judges for this series but also for the previous one which was aired in Australia. He is judging alongside Verity Hardcastle - a grooming business owner in north Yorkshire. Colin Taylor has also been really busy launching his new podcast called “Is that a dog hair in my tea?” The title 12 | Total Grooming Magazine

really did make me laugh as it goes without saying that every dog groomer has said that at some time in their career. The podcasts are easy to find and includes groomers from all over the world talking about various issues that they have had to face and also what their grooming career has been like and the things that they have got up to. A real eye opener and of course lots of giggles along the way. https://www. isthatadoghairinmytea.com/ I also wanted to mention that for the first time in grooming history i Pet Network has been registered as an awarding body alongside City and Guilds and OCN. I do believe that i pet network will be delivering qualifications which are all focused on the animal industry. Again, all kudos to them as this is a fantastic achievement, I wish them every success with this project. https://www.ipetnetwork.co.uk/ As the second wave of the coronavirus hits, it certainly has finally become apparent to the government how many dog groomers are actually practising as they and the councils have been inundated with calls from associations, as well as groomers asking if they can open or not. Success, we have now been added to the list of essential businesses so we

can at this time stay open to care for the welfare of the pets that come to our care. Some businesses have their own personal issues for closing and others have managed to stay open following guidelines with Covid measures in place. As far as I am aware there are not issues regarding the practising of dog grooming or that they pose any kind of threat to the increase in Covid cases. The guidelines are being followed from CFSG and groomers are taking them seriously. But what we must take from this situation is that we are now classed as a professional service and a necessary service and that can only be a great thing for our industry. I know there are many more things great things that have gone on this industry in 2020 but unfortunately I only have 1000 words. So let me end by thanking everybody for the work that they’ve done during this year to ensure that groomers do have a voice at government level and for all the other people in the industry who have entertained us, educated us and inspired us for the future . Stay safe groom well and look forward to 2021

Ruff Times Ahead?

As Joe Biden is announced President Elect of the USA, his latest rescue dog, Major prepares for a new life ahead at the White House.

J

v oe Biden’s election win means the White House will once again be home to a first pet – or in this case two first pets. The Biden family includes two German Shepherds: Major, a young rescue dog, and Champ, who lived at One Observatory Circle in Washington with them during Barack Obama’s administration, when Biden served as vice-president. Champ has been in the Biden family since late 2008, when Biden bought him from a breeder in Pennsylvania as a three-month-old pup. Biden had reportedly promised his granddaughters they could name the new family pet. Jill Biden had promised Joe that they would get a dog after the 2008 election and, according to Politico, “would tape pictures of different dogs on the back of the seat in front of Biden on his campaign plane”. The Bidens adopted Major, a German Shepherd, in November 2018 from the Delaware Humane Association (DHA) after fostering him for about eight months.*

Interesting fact: In 1944 Franklin D. Roosevelt was running for his fourth term when rumours surfaced that his Scottish Terrier, Fala, had accidentally been left behind when visiting the Aleutian Islands. After allegedly sending back ships to rescue his dog, Roosevelt was

ridiculed and accused of spending thousands of taxpayers’ dollars to retrieve his dog. At a speech following this Roosevelt said, “you can criticise me, my wife and my family, but you can’t criticise my little dog. He’s Scotch and all these allegations about spending all this money have just made his little soul furious.” What was later called the “Fala speech” reportedly helped secure reelection for Roosevelt.* Source: * Guardian **Wikipedia

Shampoos For All Types of Coat

It is important to have a selection of different target shampoos to cater for the variety of coat types and coat issues you see day to day. Christies Direct provides an introduction: Shampoo for All Coat Types – It is important to have some general all-purpose shampoos as these will be used every day. They will get the dog’s coat clean without stripping and are super cost effective as they can be used on all coat types. Our NEW Groom Professional Chocolate Shampoo contains organic cocoa and vanilla extract which will not only leave a sweet and luxurious scent, but it will also gently cleanse and leave behind a soft and shiny coat. Shampoo suitable for Puppies and Sensitive Skin – It is important to get puppies in a regular grooming routine as young as possible and a puppy shampoo should be gentle, fragrance free, but still a great cleaner. This can also be used on dogs with sensitive skin as the ingredients will not strip the coat or any essential oils. Shampoo for Itchy Skin - Look for shampoos containing soothing, healing, and hydrating ingredients such as aloe vera, oatmeal, tea tree and evening primrose oil. Tea tree acts as an antiseptic and can help with scalp irritations and aloe vera is fantastically soothing and hydrating perfect for dry flaking scalps. Shampoos that contain colloidal oatmeal act as a mild exfoliant and remove dead skin and help with itching. Oatmeal shampoos are great for dry skin, dandruff, and hot spots. Medicated shampoos – If you are regularly grooming a dog you may be the first to notice a change in their 16 | Total Grooming Magazine

skin or coat such as redness, bumps, sores, dry flaking skin, itching or skin thickening. There are some medicated shampoos available without prescription which can help treat the condition and also prevent reinfection. Flea and Tick Shampoos - Make sure to include some anti-flea and tick products in your salon – it will already be too late to order it when you need it! Groom Professional’s Bye Bye Buzz range is suitable for all coat types, and contains concentrated neem oil, which is not only anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and great for skin irritations, but it is also a natural remedy to repel and remove ticks and fleas. Shampoo for Dry coats that need some added shine – Sometimes a dog’s coat can get dry, dull and lack a bit of lustre. Our NEW Groom Professional Coconut shampoo is a rich conditioning shampoo with organic coconut which will nourish the skin and coat and leave behind a soft and shiny coat, plus it has a delicious tropical coconut scent. Colour Enhancing Shampoos – These shampoos work by enhancing the natural colour of a dog’s coat while removing stains and odours. Whitening shampoos are great for Bichons, Westies, and Poodles. Deodorising and deep cleaning – For those extra mucky customers or working dogs, a deep cleansing shampoo is a good investment. These shampoos will cut through grease,

remove stains, dirt, and odours leaving a rejuvenated and fresh smelling coat. Shedding Shampoos - Designed to reduce shedding by loosening hair and undercoat during grooming. For best results, use in conjunction with a de-shedding tool, such as a Groom Professional Shed Stopper. For more information call 028 2766 6879 or visit Christiesdirect.com

Tried & Tested We asked a number of groomers the following questions on their shampoo selection: 1. Which shampoo did you purchase? 2. What are your main considerations when choosing a shampoo? 3. What is it you like about this shampoo? 4. Would you recommend this shampoo and why? Rachel Ince – Hollywood Dogs 1. My main consideration is quality over price, we are a busy salon and we want the cleanest dogs with the best coat condition, we also look for a shampoo that is kind on the dogs skin. 2. We use Hydra Shampoo exclusively in our salon, we use Moist, Extreme, Ultra Whitening and Odour Neutralising which is our go to every day shampoo for most clients as we are based in the country and see a lot of muddy stinky dogs’ 3. We love everything about the products, we started out using Moist Shampoo on my Standard Poodle and were astounded by the results, it delivered a clean and moisturised coat with a gorgeous scent that lasts! We then converted to the whole range including my favourite product with is the Ultra De-matting and finishing spray which is use to blow dry every dog, it’s effective at tackling knots and leaves the coat beautifully scented, soft and luxurious! 4. I absolutely recommend Hydra, I love that there is a complete range of shampoos for every coat type, the coats dry quickly, the scent lasts and in all the time using Hydra we have never had a client report back to us with with any skin issues which is amazing! As well as shampoos and conditioners the new Soft Touch Spray is superb on dry Cockapoo coats for adding moisture but not weight, its fab! We also do a lot of hand stripping and use the grooming powder to help with this and its excellent!

Michelle Gray – House Pets Spa 1. Our company name is House Pets Spa we are a professional commercial salon established in 2012 and we are based inside Corby Veterinary Surgery. Our ethos is health & happiness with high consideration for the planet and it’s ecosystems. 2. We were looking for a shampoo which could be used through a hydro bath and would be suitable for all dogs’ skin. We ideally wanted a shampoo to be vegan, sourced in the uk and with recyclable packaging. We were looking for a hypoallergenic shampoo that was kind on the eyes and suitable to be used on puppies. Obviously we wanted it to clean well on dirty dogs, help to whiten staining and be good on greasy coats without drying the skin of other dogs. 3. After a long search and many tried we found Aqueos Shampoo. We only use this shampoo exclusively through our salon now and have done for 4 years without a single reaction reported by our customers. 4. It would be easier to list the things I don’t. Mostly I like the actual product for all the reasons I sought it out but the company’s behaviour towards me it’s customer has also been exemplary. I am so pleased I found a shampoo which helps dogs so much I have many customers who buy their shampoo through us to help control their dogs skin issues at a great price too. That I now have mild eczema on my hands and do not have any reaction to this shampoo. It naturally sterilises and cleans without drying which is a huge tick. It has a pleasant but faint smell which just leaves a nice clean smell allowing you to add or not to add scent which is useful to the owner should they not like or have medical reason not to have smells added.

Matthew Spry – Barkingham Park 1. My main considerations when buying a shampoo is ingredients. Having grown up around a hairdresser lecturer mum and having spent the last two years researching shampoos and product ingredients as well as dermatology ingredients are hugely important not only to the dog but for our skin too. 2. The shampoo I bought and tested is the Hownd miracle conditioner. 3. I very much liked the product smell and consistency, it is perfect for using in the hydrobath system as well as mixing bottle without having to use a lot of product. It worked very well on the heavy coated mix breeds we see everyday in the salon 4. I would definitely recommend the miracle conditioner by Hownd because it gives nice condition to thick salon dog coats without leaving a residue or leaving the hair greasy or heavy. It makes the coat easier to brush and comb through and achieves lovely finish on the coat and helps prevent matting between appointments.

Jessica Kent – DSG Dog spa Sheffield 1. Firstly it has to be biodegradeable & eco friendly to the environment as I use quite a lot of dog shampoo on a daily basis, the next would be a good quality shampoo which is also good value for money, lastly the shampoo needs to be Ph balanced being kind & gentle to mine & also the dogs’ skin, some shampoos on the market can cause my skin to dry & become chapped as they include harsh chemicals ( Parabens / sulfates. 2. The shampoo purchased Soothe & Calm 3. This shampoo has such a refreshing scent mixed with teatree , lavender & geranium it has a long lasting scent which eliminates odours this is what you need when dealing with smelly pooches, this product is great for dogs who have aggravated skin symptoms such as dry, itchy skin caused by allergies or fungal infections it also soothes & moisturises inflamed skin, the lavender helps to calm & destress the pooches which is great use on anxious dogs which are not keen on the grooming process to the lavender also helps to repel fleas & ticks which is an added bonus . 4. I absolutely highly recommend this shampoo its by far the best medicated antibacterial shampoo I have ever used , helping to promote healthy skin & coat, I use this on the majority of my salon pooches its my go to shampoo product which is by far the best in its class, as its not just great at degreasing & soothing, the shampoo also promotes a feeling of calm & stress relief for the dog . 24 | Total Grooming Magazine

Louisa Tandy – Louisa Grooming 1. I know there are many factors to think about when deciding on the right shampoo, type, Smell, dilution rate, price, ingredients, colour etc, but for me my main 3 considerations are as follows; 1. Do they do the job they claim to do? Regardless of price, make or smell the shampoo has to be able to deliver a clean, undamaged coat. If it is a conditioning shampoo then i expect it to be able to produce a coat that isn’t overly conditioned but enough so my comb glides through nicely. A volumising shampoo should give the coat a little lift but still allow for easy combing and the coat to not clump or become sticky etc 2. Price. Whilst I don’t mind paying for a good quality shampoo there is no need to pay over the odds for shampoo that works just as well as a more reasonably priced one 3. Dilution rate. Whilst i am not a huge fan of the super concentrated shampoos, a 5 ltr bottle does need to last at least a few weeks. I don’t want to have to be re-ordering the shampoo every 5 minutes, so ideally something that is about the 15:1 or 25:1 range 2. Simpsons Showpride Glossy coat 3. I use this shampoo A LOT in the salon. It is within my budget and a lovely shampoo that gives condition and shine to the coat. The Coco Butter fragrance is also one of my favourite smells 4. Yes, in fact i regularly recommend it to groomers and pet owners alike. It just ticks all the boxes for a thoroughly clean, nicely conditioned coat. The fragrance isn’t overbearing and it leaves the coat pliable and manageable for styling.

Holly Dean – Hair and Hound 1. When buying shampoos I am mainly looking at a brand that I can trust, thats high quality and most importantly thats safe. I love buying from Animology as I feel confident in the brand and product. The ingredients are high quality and never alter so its something I can use on dogs time and time again and I know the dog will always be safe. 2. I hold the whole Animology range in my salon. Each shampoo has specific qualities for different coat types. Some of my most used shampoos and ones that are my best sellers in the salon are; Hair of the Dog - designed to help detangle and soften coats, best used on medium- long haired dogs. White Wash - designed to help brighten white coats. White coats are often prone to staining and showing dirt/ marks a lot more than other coat colours. This really helps brighten the coat. Fox Poo - my salon is based in the countryside so a lot of dogs that enter the salon are taken on good, and often muddy, walks. The Ribble Valley isn’t short of nature and rural walks, and most dogs just love rolling in the smelliest thing possible. Fox Poo is a great product that is designed to remove this smell, and it really does! So many customers come into the salon saying, ‘he’s had a bath the other day because we took him to the woods and he rolled in something foul. We’ve tried to scrub it out but we can still smell it!’ Que Fox Poo Shampoo. Works every time. 3. I like the fact that each shampoo has different qualities. It allows me to provide my customers with a more tailored and trusted service. Each shampoo is enriched with conditioner so the coats are always left feeling very soft and clean. I also love how they’re not made with lots of artificial ingredients and fragrances that can actually irritate a lot of dogs skin and be potentially dangerous. 4. I 100% recommend Animology shampoo. Its the only shampoo I use and sell in the salon. I enjoy using Animology products and dealing with their teams. The shampoos are really easy to use and leave the coats so clean and fresh. Animology are always really fast with deliveries and really helpful. They’re simply the best brand on the market.

Troubles with Bubbles Sally Hart, groomer and trainer, from Tailwaggers shares her views on shampoos and why choosing the right one matters:

A

s groomers, choosing the shampoos we use is not always an easy task. Whilst we are fortunate to have such a vast selection of different varieties of shampoo, this can also add to the difficulties of deciding which brand to buy. And with so many fantastic products within our grasp it does become a dilemma. Our choices are mainly influenced by our personal preferences and requirements, and for this reason, it is just as well we have all these varieties. Perhaps, firstly, it would help to look at what a shampoo is and does. A shampoo is made up of a surfactant, a co-surfactant, water, salt, a preservative and a fragrance. Other ingredients are also included in the shampoo to add certain specific attributes, for example, to repair, minimise irritation, etc. Surfactants are the reason shampoos clean. They are made up of two parts, the hydrophilic (water friendly) heads and hydrophobic (water enemy) tails. The head remains suspended in the water and the tails attach to the greasy/ oily molecules. The co-surfactants are secondary surfactants there to aid and improve the effectiveness of the surfactant. Commonly they are the foam boosters, trapping gas to create bubbles. These chemical reactions are why we use shampoo, they are designed, primarily to remove the build-up of sebum. Sebum is a waxy or oily substance secreted into each hair follicle by the sebaceous gland, its main purpose is for the protection against microorganisms, and it also aids in lubrication and waterproofing.

26 | Total Grooming Magazine

Why then would we want to remove it? You may well ask, and in years gone by it was believed washing dogs frequently was not beneficial. Perhaps for animals (and, some may argue, for groomers too) living in an environment as natural as possible, this would indeed be the correct approach. Let’s face it, none of us would venture out into the Canadian Rockies to bath a grizzly bear or head off into the African Savannah to wash a lion. Sebum is, by nature, waxy or oily, and in this modern world of pollutants and micro contaminants, it has become necessary to remove these topical irritants to help prevent potential health

issues. The aim of a great shampoo is to clean and remove excess sebum that has attracted the dirt, dust, pollen and numerous other unwanted materials, without stripping all the protecting sebum.

Research and development The developers and manufacturers of shampoos spend incalculable hours and considerable sums of money to produce shampoos that offer us the great results we expect, with as little impact environmentally as possible and as economically as we demand. Not an easy ambition, but one I feel the vast majority do with huge success.

Why is our choice of shampoo so much more important than which one smells best? For pet grooming we require more than just getting the mud off and leaving a pleasant scent. The job of our shampoos is as varied as the pets we groom. We definitely do not want that fearless Welsh Terrier going home with a soft and silky flowing coat, any more than we want the grinning Golden Retriever leaving us with hair standing out in all directions. For our purpose, we need to have the opportunity to be able to match the type of shampoo we use to each individual pet we groom.

What are the most important considerations? This is going to be personal to each of us. Do we want a shampoo that costs less, or perhaps we are concerned with the ecological impact. How well a shampoo works in a hydrobath, may be of utmost importance for some groomers, whilst others want one that rinses fast. Then there are the fragrances to take into account. No way will we use a range of shampoos that we can’t stand the smell of. A few of the things we need to consider when choosing a shampoo brand or range for our salon. • How well it cleans. Non-natural shampoos do tend to have faster cleaning power and can be slightly more economical in some cases, but natural shampoos rinse easier, are gentler on the skin and have less impact environmentally • The ability to enhance different aspects. This is vitally important for grooming businesses. Using a shampoo that aids in maintaining the correct texture of a pets’ coat means we are ensuring that the unique abilities of each type of coat are preserved. Wire coats need to keep their texture to protect the skin and maintain weatherproofness. We need wool coats to have volume and to stand up and away from the 28 | Total Grooming Magazine

skin, to help with styling and finish. Short and double coated breeds often need assistance with deshedding, and the correct shampoo choice can significantly help, making the groom easier for both groomer and pet. Silky and drop coated breeds need a shampoo that is silkier and may contain a conditioner to help add weight and smoothness. • Health and wellbeing. Shampoos for sensitive skins, tearless, and aromatherapy shampoos can be hugely beneficial for groomers and their pet clients. • Certified Safe. Pet shampoos are unregulated (sound familiar?) Using a certified shampoo with safety data sheets protects you as a groomer. • Dematting and conditioning shampoos can truly make a huge difference. • Colour enhancing, medicated and antiparasitic shampoos can also have their place in our businesses. There are many considerations and we cannot expect one shampoo to cover all, so having a range allows us to use our shampoos more optimally, for pets wellbeing and easier and enhanced styling.

My selection criteria: • I wanted a natural shampoo. Now I am not fervent about using only ecofriendly products, but I do attempt to lessen my impact where I can.

• Next, I needed to think about how well the shampoos worked and was there a large enough range to cover all the essentials for salon grooming and the diverse results needed. • Certified Safe. I want to be able to confidently use shampoos knowing they are tested and safe. • Local and reliable was my next thought. Too often I had tried shampoos, that then became impossible to order. • Value for money may seem low on my list, but as groomers, we are always saying we want clients to value us more, so we need to hold onto this ideology in how we act as clients to other businesses. • And finally, the retail potential. It made sense to me that if we were going to retail shampoo, it should be the products we use and stand by. One final point, the fragrances. Actually, I was unsure where to put this in the order, for if I hadn’t liked the scents, I would not have used the shampoos at all, but I did not test this before looking at the other aspects.

My Choice: Is for All Dogkind For me, this ticked every box. For you? Well, you are in the lovely position of choosing the one that best suits you and your business. Happy Bathing!

human shampoo on dogs? It’s all about PH levels. Acid and alkaline are measured on a PH scale between 0 and 14. 0 being acidic (battery acid) and 14 the most alkaline (drain cleaner) and 7 been neutral in the middle. Both dogs and humans have an epidermis which is the outer most layer

of the skin. The epidermis has a film over it called the acid mantle. The acid mantle is made of natural oils and amino acids it is responsible for protecting the skin. If scrubbed or chemically broken the acid mantle fails to protect resulting in allergies, excess oils and irritated skin. Often seen as

yeast, bacterial or sensitive area of skin in dogs. To be maintained, the acid mantle needs to be kept at its most functional PH, in humans the PH is 4.4 to 6 which is slightly acidic. In dogs the acid mantle needs to be kept at a PH of 6.2 to 7.4 which is more alkaline / neutral. It is for this reason that shampoo made for humans, especially baby shampoo are not suitable for dogs as the acidity will break down the acid mantle. However, dog shampoo is safe on humans as alkaline is not as damaging. So you need a dog shampoo that is developed specifically for dogs with a PH between 6.2 to 7.4. Now for the right ratio! Another thing to look for when buying shampoo is the ratio. Cheaper shampoo is often diluted with a dilution ratio of 7:1 and professional ranges are usually 32:1 – 50:1. You will find that often the “cheap shampoo” won’t last as long in the salon as you have to use more, they are also more watery and don’t soap up as well and I am yet to find a cheapish range that doesn’t cause skin irritations, dry skin or and clean the dog to a high standard. Your grooms are never going to look 5 star with a dirty dog! Invest in quality. Mix it up a little! There are also shampoos out there that cater for the breed and colour you are working with, I use poodle and doodle shampoos for white coats as I work mostly with white / lemon standard poodles and doodles. I have shampoo for red coats, black coats and also drop coats as the shampoo will put proteins, keratin and create brightness in coats it is catered for. Be kind in your sourcing. It is also ethical to source eco-friendly packaging, vegan and non-animal tested shampoo, this is a huge plus. If you use perfumes and colognes you might want to invest in the same smell as your shampoo to create a longer lasting essence after your client is at home and often salon brands cater for retail so you could also sell a retail version of your salon shampoo for clients to take home! Happy bathing! 32 | Total Grooming Magazine

PAW-DER PAW-DER! Speaker’s Cat – Patrick – Elected Nation’s Purr MInister

Sir Lindsay Hoyle with Patrick

A

fter weeks of campaigning from some of the nation’s greatest pawlitical minds, the search for Battersea’s Purr Minister 2020 is over. The much-loved animal welfare charity has today named Patrick, belonging to Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, as the winner of their public vote. Despite some fierce competition from his fellow ‘catidates’, Patrick’s ‘Manifursto’ pledges of ‘impurrtiality’, ‘a better work/mouse balance’ and ‘purrtection for all’ proved incredibly popular with the electorate. Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons and Patrick’s proud owner, said: “While it is undoubtedly a bit of fun to receive this title for Patrick – and goodness knows we need it in these difficult times – I am so pleased it has been awarded by Battersea, whose

34 | Total Grooming Magazine

work in helping animals in need is well known and deserves our full support. “Patrick was up against a tough field of well-loved cats, but I think his personality and beauty won over members of the public, who I must thank for all their support in electing him. Patrick is a big part of my family, and I love having him with me – be it in my constituency of Chorley, or in Westminster. He has already developed a reputation as ‘Commons mouser in chief ’ - which in itself is a full-time job – but will do his best to continue supporting other animal causes, now he is Westminster’s Purr Minister.” Battersea runs the annual Purr Minister competition to celebrate all of the things that make cats such great pets, as well as an opportunity to highlight vital animal welfare issues. This year saw a 200% increase

in the number of votes since the last competition in 2018, making it one of the most popular Purr Minister elections yet. Battersea’s Head of Catteries and Feline Welfare, Lindsey Quinlan, said: “We have been blown away by the amount of public support this year’s candidates have received. Every cat was clearly very special and had something to offer as the next Purr Minister, but the people have spoken and we are thrilled to name Patrick as the winner. “In what has been a very complicated year for everyone, we hope our fun competition has provided some light relief, while also highlighting important animal welfare issues and the vital work Battersea is doing to help animals in need.”

Paws for thought... Visits Sue Oliver’s Dog Grooming Studio in Derby to discover what inspired a successful college grooming tutor to go it alone:

Sue Oliver

Sue at work

I Sue Oliver at this year’s Crufts

40 | Total Grooming Magazine

started dog grooming part time whilst I worked at Derby College. I completed the 7750 city and guilds training and completed my exams so that I could teach dog grooming. I also completed my Cert Ed which gave me a high level teaching qualification. I later completed my International Certified Master Groomer qualification and became

an examiner for them. I work with ICMG very closely and they are a great support to groomers out there. Funding my own salon and grooming school took years of planning and saving along with a small loan. I had great help from Groomers Online they helped me set up the salon with tools and equipment. Establishing my own salon and

The salon groom room

grooming school had always been a dream of mine and after many years teaching at Derby College I decided to take the plunge and get my own school. There were many reasons for my change of direction, which included being my own boss, not having the added paperwork of being at an FE college, being able to teach smaller groups and offer a greater experience to learners.

What element of grooming do you enjoy the most and why? I love grooming all breeds so answering this question is quite difficult. I love Poodles and I own two, I also love grooming Miniature Schnauzers as I like the sharp style for this breed. Schnauzers are lovely characters, and we have just added one to our family.

The current training on offer within the grooming industry is vast and many students ask me which is the best. My answer is “all training is great and dog grooming qualifications are great.” Make sure if you are going on a course that the school has an experienced and qualified teacher and that you feel comfortable with them. If you are thinking of starting grooming visit a grooming school and see how things work. It’s not for everyone. Get yourself trained and qualified. You will need to study hard and it’s a physical job. You will also need loads of patience for the dogs and their owners. The best advice I was given when I started was to be confident which is often easier said than done when you begin, but your confidence grows with experience.

Sue also retails snoods and the emmi-pet toothbrush. She went to Crufts this year to generate sales of these products and to make contact with potential students.

Pet groomers! Generate more income by stocking one of the finest pet supplement brands, Overby Farm or why not create your own label version.

O

verby Farm is an extension of the NaturVet brand, manufactured & distributed by Garmon Corporation in the USA. As one of the largest pet supplement manufacturers in the USA, Garmon Corporation has extensive experience of employing natural ingredients to formulate solutions for dogs and cats. Garmon Corporation have been manufacturing products in North America for over 30 years, helping provide pets with the quality of life they deserve. Garmon Corp is a fully compliant cGMP Standards facility. They are also an NASC Audited Member carrying the NASC Seal on all labels, providing a symbol of “quality assurance” for consumers. Overby Farm formulations are developed by Garmon Corp staff scientists and veterinarians. Like us, pets have their preferences as to taste and mouth feel. The feedback from Overby Farm’s 4-legged customers strongly suggests that soft chews are the tastiest and best accepted method for taking supplements. Where taste is less of a concern some formulations are available as a powder. Soft Chews are aromatically enticing for finicky eaters and are ideal for Senior Pets and those with missing teeth. They are also suitable for crumbling if required. Most formulations are wheat free. This reduces the potential for setting up grain allergies in pets

and is helpful for pet owners who are themselves are wheat intolerant. Time Release tablets are designed to be advantageous for animals with quicker metabolisms and/or those with shorter digestive tracts. A vegetable oil coating extends the dissolution time. Splitting a tablet does not affect its efficacy. Powders can be mixed in with your pets regular meals. The extensive range of pet supplements and problem solvers cater for the following areas: • CALMING AIDS • DIGESTIVE & BOWEL AIDS • GROOMING AIDS • JOINT HEALTH • LAWN CARE

• REGULAR CARE • SKIN AND COAT CARE • TRAINING AIDS • URINARY AIDS Distributed across the UK and Europe by All About Pet Health, Overby Farm can also be supplied as an own label product range helping grooming businesses establish their own brand of pet supplements. The Covid-19 Effect on Afghan Shelter

went on to establish the first animal shelter in Kabul. Now Nowzad, brings hope in the form of food and veterinary care to the many unwanted dogs and other animals that suffer injury, starvation and fear on a daily basis. But, in the Spring of 2020, a new threat appeared on the horizon – Coronavirus! The virus threatened the lives and livelihoods of the Afghan people and the prospect of rehoming dogs and cats was suddenly pushed further down the list of priorities for local people. The commitment of international donors, primarily from the UK and the USA was also tested as people suddenly found their sources of income put under increased pressure. Nowzad director, Hannah Surinowski, said: “Surprisingly,

Louise Crump with Cookie

Cookie On a dusty street in Kabul in the summer of 2016, high pitched barks alerted a group of teenage Afghan girls to a developing situation involving a group of boys who were tormenting a three month old puppy, intent on hanging it. Luckily for the young Labrador cross Collie bitch, the girls intervened. They took the pup to the Nowzad shelter where she was nursed back to health and later put up for adoption. Back in the UK, in High Wycombe at the time but now in Elgin, Scotland, Louise Crump was battling her own demons at the time, trying to keep depression at bay. Keen to develop something positive in her life, she started looking through the Nowzad website at the dogs looking for new homes and came across Cookie who was by then three months of age. Louise said: “People often ask me why I adopted a dog from Afghanistan when there are so many dogs in the UK that need homes, and the truth is that I don’t actually know the reason why. I was just drawn to the charity. “2016 was a tough year for me. I was struggling badly with depression and

it was really affecting my job and my home life. I worked from home and didn’t want to leave the house, only going out to do the school run twice a day. “I saw Cookie on the adoptions page and felt an instant connection to her. I applied to adopt her and, pending a home check, we were approved. “The process was really easy; Nowzad took care of everything from all the vaccinations and paperwork to arranging the transport. What I didn’t realise was that the approval was the beginning of a journey, not only for Cookie, but for myself. “As Cookie’s fundraising began, more and more people began to comment on her fundraising posts and I learned the true power of Facebook. I began to receive messages and friend requests from complete strangers. Little did I know that these people were about to become extended family. “So many kind people donated to Cookies cause and I will forever be grateful to those that held car boot sales and dog shows to raise even more funds for my precious girl. The

fundraising also propelled me to do something I had never done before - a marathon. Both mentally and physically, I didn’t have the energy to do it, but I knew I’d be letting Cookie down if I didn’t. And I’m proud to say that I completed all 26 miles! “Cookie arrived at London Heathrow on 3rd October. She was understandably, very tired and subdued from her journey. It took her 20 minutes to leave the sanctuary of the car and a further 30 minutes to enter the house “As Cookie settled in, she became close to my two boys and they were soon inseparable. Throughout my pregnancy in 2017, Cookie could be found lying next to me on the sofa with her head resting protectively on my bump. And from the day my daughter was born, wherever she was, Cookie was by her side. “Since Cookie arrived, my depression is less. It hasn’t gone completely, that’s not how depression works. But when I do have a bad day, I have a white Afghan fluff ball to cuddle up with, and a hugely supportive adopted family that are only a phone call away.”

we haven’t experienced much of a drop in adoptions, although at one point we did have a backlog of 34 dogs waiting to go to their forever homes due to travel restrictions brought on by Coronavirus. Thankfully, we are slowly getting the dogs out of Afghanistan and onwards to their prospective forever homes. “Coronavirus has however, had a huge negative impact on us in terms of funding. Understandably, we have had many supporters cancel their standing orders due to financial uncertainty, plus we have not been able to hold our usual fundraising events – no matter how small, and whilst shops etc have been sitting empty, so have our collection tins. “Our funds have been dramatically reduced, which is a big worry for us, especially as we live ‘hand to mouth’ and don’t have much in the way of reserves like many larger charities do.” To date, Nowzad has reunited over 1600 soldiers with the dogs and cats that they’ve rescued from war zones all over the world and approximately a dozen or so dogs and cats have been adopted by people in the UK every year (the same for the USA). and kennel staff working at the shelter, it takes a considerable ongoing resource to maintain their quality levels of care. All animals that are brought in for treatment or rehoming are vaccinated, neutered, wormed and treated for fleas and ticks. Recent years have seen a growing influx of local people not only adopting animals from the shelter but also many bringing in their pets for free preventative veterinary treatment. Afghanistan has one of the largest incidences of human/rabies deaths in the world and education is a vital part of Nowzad’s work and the charity encourages Afghans to keep pets and to keep them in good health. However, most of the shelter’s dogs are still rehomed abroad – around 80 per cent of them. More Afghans are prepared to consider taking on a cat as a pet than a dog; misguidedly believing the dogs are more likely to carry diseases. Hannah said: “We do see awful neglect and some dreadful sights but a lot of it is through ignorance rather than deliberate cruelty. We had a dog brought in with awful mange. He was covered in weeping sores but we treated him and brought him back to health. He left us in good health and went to join the Canadian soldier who rescued him.” “Unfortunately, there are thousands of animals in need and none of them asked to be born into a country of unrest with nobody to care for them. We are planning to be there for the long haul.”

About Nowzad Established by Pen Farthing, who served as a Royal Marine for over 20 years, Nowzad is already well known for its work in rescuing and patriating strays adopted by foreign soldiers serving in Afghanistan. Following his own tour of duty in the country and his subsequent rescue of several stray dogs, Pen formed The Nowzad Charity which was established to do something positive for the cats, dogs and other animals of Afghanistan that have no hope and nobody to care for them.

Pen said: “We realise we cannot transport all of the stray dogs of Afghanistan to loving homes in the West, but we will do our best to promote animal welfare out there and to assist in the vital animal aid work that is so desperately needed in Afghanistan.” The charity went on to establish the first officially recognised shelter in Afghanistan and aims to educate local people on the most effective and humane methods of caring for

these animals along with a neutering programme to combat the large stray dog population problem. Pen Farthing is a best-selling author, writing about his dog rescue missions. Books published: One Dog at a Time, No Place Like Home and Wylie: the brave street dog who never gave up. Pen was also named CNN Hero of the Year for 2014.
