INDUSTRY UPDATE

PIF Export Scheme moves to trial phase

F

ollowing several months of due diligence, the Pet Industry Federation’s export scheme is now ready to move to a trial phase. The Pet Industry Federation team has been working tirelessly to devise a scheme which enables manufacturers and suppliers to export pallets to the EU in a cost effective way. The PIF scheme will enable consolidation of pallets at a nominated DHL warehouse in the UK from where they will be exported into

the EU. PIF CEO, Nigel Baker, commented: “Since Brexit, we have consistently heard how difficult export of products containing animal protein has become for pet businesses so the team here at PIF has been determined to find a workable, cost-effective solution. We’re delighted to now be in a position to run a trial phase and I encourage everyone who is interested in taking part to put forward their expression of interest.”

Johnson’s announces passing of Chairman David Johnson

I

t is with great sadness that we announce David Johnson, Chairman of Johnson’s Veterinary Products Ltd, passed away peacefully on 21 July 2022 in Good Hope Hospital, after a short battle with illness. David joined the family business in 1970 after qualifying as a Chartered Accountant and quickly became a highly respected figure within the UK pet trade. He oversaw the development and

4

totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk

success of Johnson’s as it transitioned from local family business to international pet healthcare brand. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him, but especially his family, friends and colleagues. David worked tirelessly to help raise the profile and professional standards across all aspects of the UK pet @totalgroomingmagazineuk

trade. The company and the wider UK pet trade has lost one of the great champions of the industry and his passing reduces considerably the experience and expertise that has helped the business and the sector move forward to the respected positions both find themselves in today.

Student wins Veterinary Award A veterinary medicine student from Australia has won the Veterinary Evidence Student Awards 2022, the first time an international submission has received first place.

S

arah Daphne Foo, a final year veterinary medicine student from the University of Sydney, Australia, wrote the winning Knowledge Summary, which explores the evidence behind supraglottic airway devices versus endotracheal intubation for stable anaesthesia in rabbits. Sarah’s paper found evidence to support the use of both devices in maintaining stable anaesthesia in rabbits, concluding that the final choice of airway maintenance device should be based on the availability of equipment, the training of the practitioner and the procedure to be undertaken. Upon winning, Sarah said: “I was excited by the opportunity to participate in this competition, and I am honoured to receive this award. As someone new to veterinary research, I felt supported throughout the process, and feel much more confident in writing future Knowledge Summaries. I have a special interest in exotics and zoo medicine and hope to specialise in the future once I graduate from the DVM at the end of this year. I hope it is useful to others in the veterinary profession. I look forward to contributing future Knowledge Summaries to Veterinary Evidence.” The prestigious Veterinary Evidence Student Awards enable students to enhance their academic and research skills by writing a Knowledge Summary and submitting it to the Veterinary Evidence journal. The awards recognise the capability of undergraduate students to produce high-quality research, with all submissions subjected to the journal’s usual standards and peer-review process. Dr Kit Sturgess, Editor-in-Chief of Veterinary Evidence, said: “It gives me great pleasure to be involved in the

6

totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk

Veterinary Evidence Student Awards again this year. The enthusiasm of the applicants and the quality of the work they produce is amazing and gives me great confidence in the future of the veterinary professions. Huge congratulations to those students who have won awards and great respect for everyone who has used their time and energy to submit a piece of work for external scrutiny as this takes @totalgroomingmagazineuk

courage, resilience and commitment.” The winning paper is available to read on the Veterinary Evidence website. The 2023 competition is accepting applications until the 13th of January 2023. Any undergraduate student studying for a veterinary-related degree is welcome to apply and can find out more information on RCVS Knowledge’s website.

Benefact Group, the charity-owned financial services group, which is the fourth biggest corporate donor in the UK, has supported the Foundation for a number of years. Benefact’s giving on the charity’s work. Mark Hews, Group Chief Executive of Benefact Group, said: “Our Service of Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey was a wonderful celebration of our achievement of donating £100million to good causes, which has helped to change thousands of lives for the better in the UK and abroad. “For many financial service companies, their purpose is to make as much money as possible. In contrast, the Benefact Group family has a very different culture and values. We are not driven by making as much money as possible. We are @totalgroomingmagazineuk

driven by how much money we can give away.” Peter Knowles, Head of Cliverton, said: “Being part of a group which has a strong, ethical focus and which provides meaningful help to those who most need it, is a source of immense pride.” Benefact Group, formerly Ecclesiastical Insurance Group, distributes donations through a range of programmes – employee giving, business giving and Group-led programmes such as its Movement for Good Awards – as well as giving its profits to its charitable owner, the Benefact Trust.

Reinventing the way we clip animals Clipit- known for their hair resistant protective workwear, has launched a cordless Lithium-ion clipper, the Clipit Quattro.

T

he Quattro is exclusive to Clipit and has been developed from our expertise. Gone are the days where your clipper is heavy and cumbersome, this cordless clipper looks more like a trimmer but the way it looks and behaves it’s as punchy as some of the big names. At a glance: • The cool running titanium #10 clipper blade runs at a constant 8,000 SPM from a brushless motor, • A three-hour charge delivers six hours constant clipping • Can be used cordless or corded • Incredibly lightweight, weighing in at 254 grams • Super slimline ergonomic design hand piece • Power indicator function Delivering 8,000 strokes per minute, this is the fastest machine in the clipping marketplace. It’s shape and weight (254 grams) make it easy to manoeuvre in difficult to reach areas around small animals. The clever power function on the handpiece enables you to get the most out of your clipper thanks to its power indicator. From a three-hour charge, you get six hours of constant clipping time. “You have converted a cordless hater into a cordless lover. What a great piece of equipment you’ve designed. I’ve never liked cordless clippers; I find them heavy to use and with not enough drive to glide through the coat-until now! The Clipit Quattro is just the kind of cordless I’d been waiting for –lightweight, easy changeable blades, fast running speed and plenty of charge time - what’s not to like!?” Says Joanne Angus, Liz Paul Awarded for Lifetime Achievement 2021. With so many benefits, we are

Nutrition and anxiety

Scientists have found that certain healthy bacteria have a role to play in helping reduce signs of anxiety in dogs. This exciting research suggests that owners can help to support their pet’s mental wellbeing by feeding a good diet that encourages a healthy balance of gut bacteria.

T

he link between the brain and the gut is widely understood and accepted in humans, with phrases such as ‘gut feeling’ and ‘butterflies in the tummy’ commonly used when we’re nervous. This link has been less well recognised with our pets, until research by Purina and others shed light on how gut bacteria can affect the brain and behaviour. A survey of 1,000 dog owners carried out by Purina PetCare has found that one in four owners believe their dogs became more anxious across 2021.2 But while most owners know that their canine companions love their food; it seems that the secret to happiness in dogs, could indeed lie in what they eat. With so many more people owning dogs after the boom in the number of pets acquired during the pandemic,

12

totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk

these important benefits of nutrition are not widely known. According to Purina’s recent survey, nearly 40% of dog owners were not aware that the health of their dog’s tummy could affect their behaviour. Purina vet Dr Libby Sheridan said: “We sometimes call the gut the ‘second brain’ because there are so many nerve cells along its length and a great number of biological messengers which constantly communicate between the gut and the brain. This can have an impact not only on the health of the gut but also on a pet’s emotional state.” Purina is raising awareness that giving pets table scraps or other nutritionally low value foods, could lead to more than just tummy upsets. Dr Sheridan explains: “This is not about having to buy premium @totalgroomingmagazineuk

nutrition for your dog’s dinner – pets can experience the benefits of good nutrition at all price points. While it can be tempting to give pets our own human leftovers, not only are some of those foods potentially toxic for them, but they can also upset the balance of the good and bad bugs in their tummy. “If the balance is wrong, this can lead to our pets getting tummy upsets, which also may lead to an increase in stress and anxiety, which can translate to issues with behaviour. Find a nutritionally complete and balanced pet food that suits your pet and your pocket and don’t make sudden or frequent changes.” For more information, visit purinainstitute.com/science-of-nutrition/ promoting-gastrointestinal-health/gutbrain-axis By Naomi Oikonomou

SCISSORS

Snip snip Despite that we’re living in 2022 and technology is no doubt thriving, it’s no secret in the grooming industry that one of the most reliable pieces of equipment you can have at your side is a trusty pair of scissors. We speak with Mandy from Scissor Boutique find out their thoughts.

T

he importance of a good pair of scissors is something that groomers will stand by, vouching for the reliability and precision that no other piece of equipment can provide. Mandy Carr, Co-Owner of The Scissor Boutique, was born into the dog grooming industry and has spent her entire life working with grooming equipment. Considered a scissors specialist, Mandy has a unique way of working with scissors like no other. So, why are scissors such an important part of the day-to-day workings of a professional groomer? Mandy explains her thoughts on why you should be investing in high-quality scissors: “To many, scissors are just scissors. If you believe this, you will end up with a large collection that you only sometimes use. “You can spend thousands if you buy for the wrong reasons, such as colour or shape, pretty furnishings or ‘my friend loves it’ reasoning. Buying scissors with that thought pattern results in you becoming the sharpeners’ best friend, scissors are an investment like any work tool. However, scissors should be purchased for quality and suitability, not a price range. “We think differently. We consider the work you are doing, you as an individual, your experience with scissors, your hands and the way you work. The more I

16

know and understand the groomer and the work they are doing, the better my suggestions will suit their needs. “Working this way results in the groomer having a collection of scissors that all have purpose and works for them. The right scissors will enhance the skills of the groomer, and make the job more enjoyable. The scissors will last longer, and require less service and sharpening, as well as saving time and money. That has to be a plus!” Mandy continues. So, there are plenty of reasons why you shouldn’t be working with cheaper brands, but let’s take a look at why you should be focusing your attention towards working with a good brand. Mandy explains why she is a believer in

18

totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk

working with decent, branded scissor companies: “I have worked with some of my branded suppliers for my entire working life. Those relationships were passed down to me by my dad, Trevor Flatt. “Buying from a good scissor brand, with the right specifications, ensures you have a quality product that works for you. At The Scissor Boutique, 90% of our stock comes from scissor manufacturers that have worked generations in the craft. That experience and history means a lot to me. These companies cannot afford to lose the reputations they have. “When families have spent years in the industry, some over a hundred years, devoted to better scissors, that has to be to be noted. 10% of our stock is own-brand. Those scissors will be more specialist tools that are not available through our core channels. Each and every scissor style will have been thoroughly and rigorously tested before its launch so we are fully informed of its long-term capabilities. We work closely with our suppliers and we do often meet or visit them to maintain a good relationship, just as we love doing with our clients that buy our scissors.” As we can see, it’s true that a wellpracticed craft combined with a wealth of industry knowledge can deeply impact the end user. So, the next step is finding out how this can be beneficial to your clientele as you’re going to want to ensure that they’re getting the best of what you have to offer. @totalgroomingmagazineuk

Mandy explains how clients need to be able to trust a product, the same way that any professional groomer would: “A brand that has been around for a lifetime, or in some cases more than a generation, has been tried, tested and trusted. It has become a trend to buy scissors with a celebrity groomer’s name on them. This tends to be just a trend that passes and messes with the market for a few months. After the rush, it will soon be will forgotten as its doesn’t have the magic that the hype gave it. “Often, a groomer will see a demonstration and believes that brand of scissor is the whole reason for the quality of the groom. They are excited and purchase them, believing it’s a ‘magic pair of scissors’. Days later, they’ll call me and ask ‘why is this not working for me?’ This is behind The Scissor Boutiques reputation and success. We never use demonstrations to sell scissors. If someone kindly demonstrates one of our scissors, they will recommend to talk to us, to see if this is suitable for the groomer.” Much like any line of work, the craftsperson needs good quality tools that are suitable for the work they’re trying to achieve. Making the right decision can entice more footfall. By placing the best equipment in the hands of the groomers, it can really help them to stand out from the crowd. Barras Blades

Paul Allison tells us a little about Barras Blades, how you should always keep an eye on quality and how working with reputable brands is of the utmost importance.

I

t’s not a secret that even highquality tools will need the occasional touch up. Using some good quality scissors won’t require them as often, but one thing that we can say is that the whole process will be leaps and bounds easier with the right scissors. Paul Allison is a sole trader at Barras Blades, a sharpening company with innovation and engineering at its core. Paul explains the benefits and ease of access when working with a higher quality of scissor: “As a sharpener, I prefer to work with quality scissors as they will be easier to sharpen with consistent results. I will be able to get back-up parts, such as pivot bolts. Buying from a reputable brand also means that they understand the grooming requirements of scissors and they won’t be selling poorly made hairdressing scissors with a paw print stuck to them. “A high price is also not always a guarantee of high quality. For those joining the grooming industry, I will always point them at the venerable Roseline brand that, while not fancy, are pretty bombproof!” For more experienced groomers, Paul recommends the Kanpeki Blackbird range, which is designed in conjunction with experienced sharpeners and are all semi-bevel type with micro-serrations. “Always have a backup, be it scissors, clipper blades or clippers. Without a backup, you are one failure away from cancelling appointments for clients with the resultant impact on your reputation.” Paul finishes, and we couldn’t agree more! The proof is in the pudding, working with reputable scissor brands should be of the utmost importance when deciding on which direction to take your grooming business. From return clientele to reducing the risk of breakage, a high-quality pair of scissors should be on every groomers’ tool belt. Visit www.barras-blades.com

RACHEL BEAN MONTHLY

What to do if a dog is choking This month, Rachel Bean took canine first aid to a very exciting location, the Brewdog DogHouse Hotel in Edinburgh!

S

taff and invited guests did a training session, with the help of my loyal fox red Labrador Chilli, who gave some fantastic demonstrations with real aplomb! It also served as a fab launch party for Brewdog’s latest dog-friendly menu, powered by the amazing Brewski’s Biscuits. Chilli loved their treats which are made using the spent grains from the Brewdog brewing process. Eco too! It was wonderful to see the folks at Brewdog taking canine first aid so seriously. In the world of grooming, having a first aid qualification gives your customers confidence in your business, and extra faith to put their fur baby in your hands. People who have done the iPET Network qualification also have said that the training gives them that sense of calm when a crisis comes along, removing the panic from a stressful situation, in its place the skills you need

24

totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk

to act quickly and safely.

TOP TIP:

This month’s top tip is advice on what to do if a dog is choking. If a dog is choking and you can see the item that is lodged in their throat you need to do abdominal thrusts for small dogs. Turn them onto their back, use the palm of your hand, apply pressure right beneath the rib cage and push firmly inwards and upwards five times. If the abdominal thrust fails and the dog falls unconscious you need to do the following: Place your dog on its back on the floor and straddle them. Tilt the dog’s head towards the floor. Locate the trachea/larynx area. Make an open diamond shape with your hands. Then place your thumbs on either side of the larynx area. Use a J pattern with your thumbs to @totalgroomingmagazineuk

dislodge and push the ball up and out of your dog’s airway. You will have to push very hard. For medium and large dogs, put your arms around them so your hands join at the abdomen. Then, make a fist with your hands and firmly, and swiftly, push up and forward five times in a thrusting motion - much like you would perform the manoeuvre on a human. Check if this has dislodged the item, if not rush to your vet. MOBILE GROOMING

On the move In 2022, it’s hard to imagine simply staying in one place. That’s why, in this issue of Total Grooming, we’re taking a deep look at mobile grooming and what makes it a desirable trait to your clients.

O

ver the last five years, the portable grooming industry has seen enormous growth, with customers enjoying the flexibility and freedom that it has to offer. Despite the pandemic, there have been reports of mobile grooming services seeing a huge increase in business. Emma Holmes, Managing Director of Wet Pets Conversions, tells us a little about some of the benefits of running a mobile business: “It offers unrivalled flexibility, allowing you to work when and where you want to. The view from your office changes every few hours, and it fits in and around working parents.” Alongside this, it can also offer some eco-alternatives compared to renting a fixed premises, according to Emma. “The day-to-day running costs of the business are significantly lower than renting a fixed premises - with the main overheads being diesel, water, van ancillaries. Plus, you are often using the customers’ own power to plug in which equates to an average of £1.20 per groom. Customers also love the convenience of having their pets groomed outside their house where the animal is often calmer, and our customers are able to charge a premium

28

totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk

for this service.” Adds Emma. There are so many avenues that you should be considering if you’re looking to make your business mobile. There are things to think about such as insulated linings, which Wet Pets can provide. Their product range and optional extras allow the customers to create the mobile salon of their dreams - with full customisation options to make them as unique as they and their businesses are. If you’re looking to make the switch

@totalgroomingmagazineuk

MOBILE GROOMING into mobile grooming, you should really think about the fact that there are so many benefits that fixed salons can’t compete with, however there are also some downsides, as with anything. The weather conditions, for instance, can provide the loveliest sunny days as well as harsh snowstorms. Mobile groomers often don’t realise that vans are universally restricted to 3,120 watts of power draw, so you really need to consider this when you’re running multiple pieces of equipment inside of your new mobile workspace. When it comes to pricing, Emma encourages mobile groomers to keep their prices high: “It’s easier said than done I know, especially if you are in a highly competitive area. It’s important that you value yourself, your talent and the extra convenience you uniquely provide by travelling to your customer, saving them the time and hassle of bringing their pet to a salon with the added stress to both themselves and the animal. “It’s a one to one service without noise from other groomers, dogs barking in crates waiting for collection and other pitfalls a busy salon might hold. It’s important that your price reflects this.” There are many conveniences to running a mobile business, too. If you’re not currently working with card payments, this is absolutely something to look into! From making your accounts simpler to just ease of access, it’s something highly encouraged by Emma. You should always invest in the best for your business, so the obvious base

30

totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk

layer of your mobile grooming should be taking on as newer a van model as your budget allows. “Make the van the first priority and the conversion extras the second. Try to go for a long wheel base van - you are in there all day and you do not want to feel too confined.” “Mobile grooming provides an exciting opportunity for you to be

@totalgroomingmagazineuk

your own boss in a manageable and affordable way. It can be daunting at first, but you will soon discover a business like no other and a great network of other mobile groomers who all enjoy the unique benefits it has to offer.” Emma finishes. Naturally, you shouldn’t just take our word for it. Wet Pets Conversions has a friendly team that’s there to answer all of your questions and enquiries, being able to provide as much information as required. Tours are available at their Dorset HQ where you can watch the conversions be hand made from scratch and see for yourself the level of detail and expertise that goes into every Wet Pets conversion. It seems as though mobile grooming might just be the future, with the ability to travel to any local venue that your client needs, to saving you bills on renting a space, the mobile mind set is something that we recommend you consider for your grooming business. MOBILE GROOMING

Mobile insurance A top insurance brand offers high pedigree mobile pet grooming insurance.

I

f you have a mobile pet grooming business, apart from your skill and your passion for the job, the vehicle in which you do business is probably your biggest single asset. Whether you operate your dog or cat grooming business from an adapted van or a modified trailer or caravan, it will probably have had a major overhaul and expensive modifications to make it fit for purpose. You may have gone to a specialist van conversion company or rolled up your sleeves and done the work yourself, either way the investment in customised fixtures and fittings will have been considerable. Mobile grooming parlours often boast a generator, electric sockets, lighting, grooming tables, running water and a bath or shower unit to enable you to give the pets on your books the attention they deserve and their owners demand. The cost of all these modifications will very quickly add up. Once the outlay has been made and the conversion work has been done, you will need to be confident that your insurance is also up to scratch and that your permanent fixtures will be covered. Standard commercial van insurance may seem like a good deal for a mobile pet grooming business, but many policies won’t provide adequate cover for the modifications you have made. Adrian Flux has a variety of specialist schemes perfect for mobile pet grooming salons of all descriptions. Their high pedigree plans offer peace of mind protection for your van and the conversions you have made to it. The broker has almost 50 years’

32

experience and can offer mobile dog grooming van insurance to suit your precise needs, no matter how complex they are. Adrian Flux insurance schemes offer many optional extras including: • Cover for permanent specialist fixtures and fittings • Cover for modifications • Free legal cover • Courtesy vehicle available on comprehensive policies • Windscreen cover • Discounts for no claims bonus • Breakdown cover

@totalgroomingmagazineuk

For a mobile dog grooming salon, being on the road at all times is vital. If you break down or are involved in an accident that puts the van out of action, it will have a detrimental impact on the business and, no doubt, it will quickly begin to hit you in the pocket. Adrian Flux has a team of claim call handlers on duty around the clock to help keep you on the move. Call 0800 089 0203 for an instant, no obligation quote for your mobile dog grooming van or converted trailer. Alternatively, visit www.adrianflux.co.uk to request a free call back.

GROOMERS OF THE MONTH

The Boujee Groomer

Nadia Lee, aka The Boujee Groomer, is a salon owner, entrepreneur, business coach, content creator and brand ambassador. Today, we speak with her to talk about her grooming career.

N

adia specialises in pet trims, senior dogs, special handling and rehabilitating hard to handle dogs. When she first started out, Nadia confesses that she wasn’t too familiar with the ins and outs of running a business. After buying her current shop from a retiring pet groomer, Nadia is now fortunate enough to be able to charge over two times more than any of her competitors in the local area with only a three-day working week! Nadia adds: “I have my dream clients and my dogs are all wonderful.” This success didn’t just come overnight, however. Nadia has developed a huge social media following over the years, jumping from 2k followers to over 15k members of “The Boujee Gang” on Instagram, and is showing no signs of slowing! “It [social media] has brought a lot of new interests and enquiries to my business locally, eople have reached out and even driven over an hour to get their dogs groomed by me. It really is an honour to be able to groom their dogs. I also love making both my dogs and clients happy with the end results.” Nadia adds. According to the Boujee Groomer, the best ways to grow a business are to be consistent with your artistry, have clear communication and to always be providing great customer service. Something that has really helped her is that she tries to be authentic and herself at all times. Nadia explains: “I feel like a lot of people feel pressured to look, act, or present themselves in a certain way. When you are genuinely yourself, people can really feel your vibe and connect like ‘hey, that’s so relatable! I’m like that too.’” The next best thing is to constantly be

34

totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk

We should show more support, and encouragement to keep us all going. showing how passionate you are about what you do. When you go to work with those positive vibes, it can really demonstrate to your clientele that your heart is fully in it. As well as running the Sippin’ with my Bitches podcast on Spotify and YouTube, @totalgroomingmagazineuk

Nadia is part of the HBO Max show, Haute Dog. On episode six, titled ‘Who’s a Good Toy?’, she took part in two toythemed challenges, using the creativity and imagination of her childhood toys. “The set was magical! I made fur-ever friendships with other cast groomers, and

@TotalGrooming

GROOMERS OF THE MONTH met some pretty cool dogs on the show, too. I will never forget this experience, it was life changing.” Nadia adds. In regards to what to look out for in the industry, Nadia feels as though there are so many new products coming out by big companies and small businesses. Nadia recommends going to trade shows, keeping up with industry news and following grooming favourites to see what’s trending on a daily basis. It’s important to know that, if you’re starting out in the industry, you have a huge shot at doing great things. Nadia shares some inspirational words to any up-and-coming groomers: “I want new groomers to know you are worthy, please give yourself grace, and be patient! I feel like a lot of groomers struggle with confidence because we are in an industry that’s constantly getting criticised. “Take the time to enjoy the process of your grooming journey and go at your own pace. My good friend Isaac always reminds me that ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’. Take time to soak up as much education as possible with online classes, webinars, trade-shows, and even get a mentor!” Nadia ultimately wants to encourage groomers to be kind to other groomrers. The industry can be tough, and nobody should be mean, unkind or bully any other fellow groomers within the industry. “No one really talks about this enough and it can be very toxic to one’s mental, physical, and spiritual health,” Nadia explains, “Groomers are very sensitive and we should show more support, and encouragement to keep us all going. I hope by raising awareness we can do better going into the future for the next generation of groomers. “I want people to know that I truly love grooming and I hope I make a small impact in part of the dogs’, pet parents’, or groomers’ lives. I want to bring joy and inspiration to this world, and share that we are all worthy and have something special to offer.” Finishes Nadia. The inspiration is there and Nadia’s career just goes to show that, with the right attitude and love for the art, the grooming industry can take you anywhere you want to go in life. FELINE FOCUS

Katie Gwilt: Kat Lady By Sarah Mackay and Fern Gresty, the iPET Network

T

his month we are handing over to Four Paws Groom School trainer, and Kat Lady business owner Katie Gwilt, who tells us about her journey with delivering the iPET Network qualifications, and also what students can expect if they choose to take one of the courses. We specifically sought Katie out to be one of our first cat grooming teachers, due to her welfare-first approach to the skill. Katie believes in giving students as many great experiences as possible during the course, gaining skills and knowledge in a salon environment but also going out on the road visiting customers directly in their homes, meaning that students leave ready to start grooming cats, or expand their existing dog grooming business. In other news, we hope that everyone and their furry friends and clients are staying cool during this hot weather. Not the best environment for our pets, but with a little tender loving care, we can all get through just fine. Katie says... I am passionate about cat grooming and love running my business as a mobile cat groomer and holistic feline therapist. Since March 2022 I have been the principle cat grooming tutor for the iPET Network at their North West salon, Four Paws Grooming in Lymm near Warrington. I have always wanted to teach and was very excited when iPET Network approached me to come on board. They had the curriculum already written and just needed someone to teach the students. The iPET Network qualifications I teach have three different levels to suit all needs and these are regulated by OFQUAL and nationally recognised qualifications (currently the only one in

38

totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk

the UK). It is suitable for anyone, whether you have previous grooming experience or have worked with cats already. One of my recent students, Sarah, said: “You get experience of working on lots of cats of different breeds, sizes with different coats, temperaments and needs – no two days are the same and I have learnt so much along the way. “I’ve enjoyed this course so much (and Katie’s teaching style) that I’m enrolling @totalgroomingmagazineuk

for the Level 3 Diploma in Cat Grooming and Salon Management before I’ve even fully completed the Certificate. “I think I’ve found my new calling thanks to Katie and this course!” The 3 levels are... iPET Network Level 3 Award in an Introduction to Cat Grooming An introduction level course that includes five days practical cat grooming experience plus extra theory work you

complete online at home. As part of this course, you will get to groom a minimum of three cats and is a great place for a beginner to start. This is a great introduction for those who want to be able to confidently groom their cat at home or are a cat sitter or other cat professional wanting to be able to add a little extra to their services. iPET Network Level 3 Certificate in Cat Grooming and Introduction to Styling A ten-day version of the course that also includes two theory days you complete at home in your own time. On this course, you get to groom at least eight cats as a minimum and is a lovely introduction to what working as a cat groomer will be like. You can decide to upgrade to the Level 3 Diploma and gain both certificates if (like me) you find this is your passion. iPET Network Level 3 Diploma in Cat Grooming and Salon Management The full course is 25 days long with additional theory work to be completed at home. It also includes cat first aid training. On this course you will groom a minimum of 20 cats and be able to do everything from a claw clip to a full lion cut. You will also get advice on setting up your business if this is the path you are wanting to go down. Highly recommended if you wish to pursue a career in cat grooming. There is also a fast track course for those who are already groomers looking to gain a nationally recognised qualification to enhance their business, or branch out to add cat grooming to their existing dog grooming offer. Some of what you will learn: • The importance of wellbeing and welfare in cat grooming • How to safely handle cats (a strict no

scruffing policy) • How to prioritise what is best for the cats in your care • How to educate your clients • The best tools and techniques for cat grooming • Introduction to cat behaviour and body language @totalgroomingmagazineuk

GROOMERS AROUND THE WORLD

Asami Terada

Asami Terada is a professional dog groomer with over 20 years’ experience. Based in Osaka, Japan, they a small business owner, working from their at-home grooming salon as well as offering mobile grooming services.

What can you tell me about your grooming career? I finished a two-year course at grooming school before getting a job in a small pet shop, working for 10 years as a groomer. I left the job due to marriage and, after several years, I missed the job and dogs so much that finally, I made up my mind to open my own salon at home. I offered a home-visit service for elderly dogs.

What can you tell me about grooming in Japan? Japanese groomers are enthusiastic learners who are always eager to learn trimming and scissoring techniques. However, in Japan, “just cutting skills” are not enough. We need to learn canine-friendly grooming skills, so as not to burden the dogs. Studying ethology and anatomy are essential for learning

42

totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk

these skills. With that knowledge, and with dog-friendly grooming methods, I think that we help dogs live longer and happily ever after.

What are some key things that you think UK groomers can learn from Japanese groomers?

Speed could be the priority, but many Japanese groomers think there are more important things such as a courteous manner for both dogs and customers, detailed explanations for clients, thorough treatments, politeness to clients and careful cutting.

Are there any general thoughts you’d like to share with our readers? Japan is growing fast, as well as the @totalgroomingmagazineuk

dogs, too. Longevity and aging problems are inseparable from real life. However, there are many sad cases where old dogs cannot be offered grooming services at salons. There are many poor people who want to make their elderly dogs clean and tidy, but their requests are always rejected at shops. My home-visit business is particularly targeting them. I want to make both dog-owners and dogs happy. Follow @kurumiasami_groomer on Instagram.

Going Mobile…

Winner

Grooming Van of the Year

The Portable Palace Created from our Revolutionary insulated panel, the Palace provides groomers with unrivalled benefits never seen before in the industry! This amazing new concept was born due to our lining's incredible lifespan - they often out live the vans they were placed in - so we created a demountable pod where your business can be moved on to the next chassis easily when needed - or if you no longer wish to be mobile, you can demount the pod and work from your garden!

• • • • • • • •

As the chassis ages, the Palace can be removed and placed onto a brand new chassis - resulting in a much cheaper cost than having to buy a whole new van and conversion with next to no downtime If the chassis is involved in an accident or breaks down you can simply remove the body, place it on the ground and work from your driveway whilst you wait for it to be repaired. The lining will not out live the vehicle like so often seen with used van conversions. You then have to sell the van & conversion and then buy a new van and conversion and wait whilst it is converted. Whereas with the Palace, you can keep the pod forever and change the chassis as you need to. Once you choose to retire from mobile grooming you can remove the Palace, sell the chassis and work from the Palace in your garden instead of having to buy a parlour or convert a room in your house.
